Sikeres volt a 2018. szeptember 6. és 8. között Debrecenben megrendezett Magyar Közgazdasági Társaság 56. Közgazdász-vándorgyűlése. A konferencia három napja alatt, két plenáris és 19 szekcióülés keretében csaknem 190 előadó osztotta meg gondolatait a hazai és határainkon túli magyar közgazdászokból álló 900 fős hallgatósággal. A plenáris ülések és a 19 tematikus szekció előadói idén a hagyományos témák (a pénzügyek, a gazdaságpolitika vagy éppen az EU-források tervezése és felhasználása) mellett elsősorban olyan speciális kérdésekkel foglalkoztak, mint az innováció és az oktatás, szakképzés fontossága a foglalkoztatás és a nemzetgazdaság versenyképessége, illetve fenntartható fejlődése szempontjából. Emellett a konferencián szóba kerültek például a fintechszektor szabályozási kérdései, a sportfinanszírozás, a felelős vállalatirányítás, az öngondoskodás, a logisztikai ipar, az agrárium vagy éppen a startupok világa. Az 56. Közgazdász-vándorgyűlés meghatározó „horizontális” témái a versenyképesség, az innováció és az oktatás voltak: a konferencia előadói szinte kivétel nélkül egyetértettek abban, hogy a magyar gazdaság versenyképességének elsődleges meghatározó tényezői az innováció, a termelékenység javítása és az oktatási rendszer ehhez nélkülözhetetlen erősítése. A Magyar Közgazdasági Társaság Elnökségének nevében, az 56. Közgazdász-vándorgyűlés plenáris és szekcióülésein elhangzott néhány megállapítást, javaslatot terjesztünk elő megfontolásra a magyar gazdaság- és monetáris politika irányítóinak, meghatározó szereplőinek. Innovation and education are essential factors of competitivenes – Major findings of the 56th Economist’s Congress The Hungarian Economic Association succesfully held the 56th Itinerant Meeting of Economists between 6 and 8 September 2018 in Debrecen. The conference featured two plenary and 19 section meetings where almost 190 presenters shared their ideas with the audience of 900 Hungarian economists. Beyond the contemporary issues (finance, economic policy and budgeting EU funds), the presenters placed great emphasis on special issues as innovation and education, the importance of vocational education regarding competetiveness of national economy and sustainable development. On behalf of the Secretary of the Hungarian Economic Association, we will submit several proposals and recommendations into consideration to the key figures of decision-making of Hungarian economy and monetary policy.

Background and Objectives: Optimization of chemotherapy is crucial for cancer patients. Timely and costly efficient treatments are emerging due to the increasing incidence of cancer worldwide. Here, we present a methodology of nano-motion analysis that could be developed to serve as a screening tool able to determine the best chemotherapy option for a particular patient within hours. Materials and Methods: Three different human cancer cell lines and their multidrug resistant (MDR) counterparts were analyzed with an atomic force microscope (AFM) using tipless cantilevers to adhere the cells and monitor their nano-motions. Results: The cells exposed to doxorubicin (DOX) differentially responded due to their sensitivity to this chemotherapeutic. The death of sensitive cells corresponding to the drop in signal variance occurred in less than 2 h after DOX application, while MDR cells continued to move, even showing an increase in signal variance. Conclusions: Nano-motion sensing can be developed as a screening tool that will allow simple, inexpensive and quick testing of different chemotherapeutics for each cancer patient. Further investigations on patient-derived tumor cells should confirm the method’s applicability.

The contrast sensitivity of normal and anomalous trichromats were examined with Landolt-C figures by eye-tracking system. For the measurements, two series of test images (achromatic and colored) were designed. The difficulty levels of the tests were gradually increased after each right answer. In the case of the observation of the ring of the Landolt-C figures, the variables related to fixation duration, fixation count, visit duration and count significantly affected this subject, success or image parameters, and their interactions. The main questions of this study were as follows: Which statistical method is suitable to model the differences between anomalous and normal trichromats? Which eye-movement variables have a significant effect on the investigated parameters and on their interactions? Is there any significant difference between eye-movement variables of normal and anomalous trichromats? How does the survival time of anomalous and normal trichromats change in the case of achromatic and colored figures? The results showed that the right answers of anomalous and normal trichromats can be described with multiple or cross-classified contingency tables evaluated effectively by loglinear regression. The survival analysis showed that normal trichromats are more successful in interpreting colored images, while anomalous trichromats seemed to be more efficient in perceiving achromatic images.

In this paper, the kinetics of the reaction of phenyl isocyanate with crosslinking agents such as sucrose, sorbitol, and glycerol are reported. Crosslinking agents were used in high molar excess to isocyanate to obtain pseudo-first-order rate dependencies, and the reaction products were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and detected by UV spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. It was found that the glycerol’s primary hydroxyl groups were approximately four times reactive than the secondary ones. However, in the case of sorbitol, the two primary OH groups were found to be the most reactive, and the reactivity of hydroxyl groups decreased in the order of kOH(6)(8.43) > kOH(1)(6.91) > kOH(5)(1.19) > kOH(2)(0.98) > kOH(3)(0.93) > kOH(4)(0.64), where the numbers in the subscript and in the brackets denote the position of OH groups and the pseudo-first-order rate constants, respectively. The Atomic Polar Tenzor (APT) charges of OH groups and dipole moments of monosubstituted sorbitol derivatives calculated by density functional theory (DFT) also confirmed the experimental results. On the other hand, the reactions of phenyl isocyanate with crosslinking agents were also performed using high excess isocyanate in order to determine the number of OH-groups participating effectively in the crosslinking process. However, due to the huge number of derivatives likely formed in these latter reactions, a simplified reaction scheme was introduced to describe the resulting product versus reaction time distributions detected by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Based on the results, the kinetically equivalent functionality (fk) of each crosslinking agent was determined and found to be 2.26, 2.6, and 2.96 for glycerol, sorbitol, and sucrose, respectively.

A current trend in the quest for new therapies for complex, multifactorial diseases, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), is to find dual or even multi-target inhibitors. In DM, the sodium dependent glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys and the glycogen phosphorylase (GP) in the liver are validated targets. Several (β-D-glucopyranosylaryl)methyl (het)arene type compounds, called gliflozins, are marketed drugs that target SGLT2. For GP, low nanomolar glucose analogue inhibitors exist. The purpose of this study was to identify dual acting compounds which inhibit both SGLTs and GP. To this end, we have extended the structure-activity relationships of SGLT2 and GP inhibitors to scarcely known (C-β-D-glucopyranosylhetaryl)methyl arene type compounds and studied several (C-β-D-glucopyranosylhetaryl)arene type GP inhibitors against SGLT. New compounds, such as 5-arylmethyl-3-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazoles, 5-arylmethyl-2-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoles, 4-arylmethyl-2-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)pyrimidines and 4(5)-benzyl-2-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)imidazole were prepared by adapting our previous synthetic methods. None of the studied compounds exhibited cytotoxicity and all of them were assayed for their SGLT1 and 2 inhibitory potentials in a SGLT-overexpressing TSA201 cell system. GP inhibition was also determined by known methods. Several newly synthesized (C-β-D-glucopyranosylhetaryl)methyl arene derivatives had low micromolar SGLT2 inhibitory activity; however, none of these compounds inhibited GP. On the other hand, several (C-β-D-glucopyranosylhetaryl)arene type GP inhibitor compounds with low micromolar efficacy against SGLT2 were identified. The best dual inhibitor, 2-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-4(5)-(2-naphthyl)-imidazole, had a Ki of 31 nM for GP and IC50 of 3.5 μM for SGLT2. This first example of an SGLT-GP dual inhibitor can prospectively be developed into even more efficient dual-target compounds with potential applications in future antidiabetic therapy.

This study assessed the distribution of heavy metals in the gills, kidney, and liver, correlated with the severity of histopathological changes, of three fish species with different feeding habitats (Barbus barbus, Squalius cephalus, and Chondrostoma nasus) from the Crișul Negru river, Romania. The levels of copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in fish tissues were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Histopathology and the expressions of TNF-α and proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were investigated by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Our data suggest a significant correlation between the bioconcentration level of metals and structural changes. The carnivorous species was the most affected compared to the omnivorous and herbivorous ones, and the most affected organ was the kidney. Moreover, the correlation of tissue damage with the PCNA and TNF-α expression levels revealed that the herbivorous species presented less extended lesions, likely due to higher activated repair mechanisms and lower levels of inflammation. In conclusion, our data and the subsequent statistical analysis suggest that feeding behavior could be correlated with the histopathological alterations and might be used for a more profound evaluation of aquatic environment safety and analysis of aquatic ecosystems.

Rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) could play a major role in fighting multidrug-resistant bacteria. Recently, it was discovered that all living organisms oscillate in the range of nanometers and that these oscillations, referred to as nanomotion, stop as soon the organism dies. This finding led to the development of rapid AST techniques based on the monitoring of these oscillations upon exposure to antibiotics. In this review, we explain the working principle of this novel technique, compare the method with current ASTs, explore its application and give some advice about its implementation. As an illustrative example, we present the application of the technique to the slowly growing and pathogenic Bordetella pertussis bacteria.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) display surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as a result of their irradiation at a targeted light frequency. SPR also results in heat production that increases the temperature of the surrounding environment, affecting polymerization. The aim was to investigate the SPR effect of AuNPs on a dimethacrylate-based photopolymer system. The tested composites were designed to overlap the illumination required for the polymerization and the plasmon effect. The 5 nm-sized dodecanethiol capped AuNPs were applied in different concentrations in the matrix that were irradiated with green light (λ = 532 nm), where the Irgacure 784 photoinitiator also absorbs the light. The plasmonic effect was investigated for the refractive index change by surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) supplemented by ellipsometry. Moreover, optical transmission and transmission electron micrographs (TEM), diametral tensile stress (DTS), and confocal Raman spectroscopy was performed to determine the degree of conversion (DC) at 1.0, 1.4, and 2.0 mW/cm2 light intensities. It was found that the optimal conditions were at 0.0208 wt% AuNPs concentration and 1.4 mW/cm2 light intensity at which the refractive index change, DTS, and DC data were all maximal. The study confirmed that AuNPs are applicable to improve the polymerization efficiency of dental composite resin.

The use of peptide-drug conjugates has generated wide interest as targeted antitumor therapeutics. The anthracycline antibiotic, daunomycin, is a widely used anticancer agent and it is often conjugated to different tumor homing peptides. However, comprehensive analytical characterization of these conjugates via tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is challenging due to the lability of the O-glycosidic bond and the appearance of MS/MS fragment ions with little structural information. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the optimal fragmentation conditions that suppress the prevalent dissociation of the anthracycline drug and provide good sequence coverage. In this study, we comprehensively compared the performance of common fragmentation techniques, such as higher energy collisional dissociation (HCD), electron transfer dissociation (ETD), electron-transfer higher energy collisional dissociation (EThcD) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization–tandem time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF/TOF) activation methods for the structural identification of synthetic daunomycin-peptide conjugates by high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. Our results showed that peptide backbone fragmentation was inhibited by applying electron-based dissociation methods to conjugates, most possibly due to the “electron predator” effect of the daunomycin. We found that efficient HCD fragmentation was largely influenced by several factors, such as amino acid sequences, charge states and HCD energy. High energy HCD and MALDI-TOF/TOF combined with collision induced dissociation (CID) mode are the methods of choice to unambiguously assign the sequence, localize different conjugation sites and differentiate conjugate isomers.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, high-grade, aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine malignancy most commonly associated with sun-exposed areas of older individuals. A relatively newly identified human virus, the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of MCC. Our study aimed to examine nine MCC cases and randomly selected 60 melanoma cases to identify MCPyV status and to elucidate genetic differences between virus-positive and -negative cases. Altogether, seven MCPyV-positive MCC samples and four melanoma samples were analyzed. In MCPyV-positive MCC RB1, TP53, FBXW7, CTNNB1, and HNF1A pathogenic variants were identified, while in virus-negative cases only benign variants were found. In MCPyV-positive melanoma cases, besides BRAF mutations the following genes were also affected: PIK3CA, STK11, CDKN2A, SMAD4, and APC. In contrast to studies found in the literature, a higher tumor burden was detected in virus-associated MCC compared to MCPyV-negative cases. No association was identified between virus infection and tumor burden in melanoma samples. We concluded that analyzing the key morphologic and immunohistological features of MCC is critical to avoid confusion with other cutaneous malignancies. Molecular genetic investigations such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) enable molecular stratification, which may have future clinical impact.

Flavonoids represent an important class of secondary metabolites because of their potential health benefits and functions in plants. We propose a novel method for the comprehensive flavonoid filtering and screening based on direct infusion mass spectrometry (DIMS) analysis. The recently invented data mining procedure, the multi-step mass-remainder analysis (M-MARA) technique is applied for the effective mass spectral filtering of the peak rich spectra of natural herb extracts. In addition, our flavonoid-filtering algorithm facilitates the determination of the elemental composition. M-MARA flavonoid-filtering uses simple mathematical and logical operations and thus, it can easily be implemented in a regular spreadsheet software. A huge benefit of our method is the high speed and the low demand for computing power and memory that enables the real time application even for tandem mass spectrometric analysis. Our novel method was applied for the electrospray ionization (ESI) DIMS spectra of various herb extract, and the filtered mass spectral data were subjected to chemometrics analysis using principal component analysis (PCA).

Sitophilus granarius (L.) is an important pest of stored grain worldwide. In recent years, sustainable methods against it have received attention as grain stock protective means. Our aim was to obtain information about the efficacy of infrared irradiation (IR) against S. granarius in laboratory conditions. The change in adult-activity and median lethal dose (LD50) triggered by IR in S. granarius was examined. The insecticidal efficacy in the infested grains was also analyzed at 12, 24, 48, and 72h following exposure to IR (250W), and the progeny-production was assessed 45 days upon the treatment. Based on our findings, total mortality ensued in a grain stock of 50 g at 412 s and a for 100 g grain at 256 s. A significant increase in S. granarius mortality could be observed in the higher grain weight regime, which can be accounted for by the higher heat-absorbance of objects with higher weight. The activity of pests immediately after the beginning of IR increased and subsequently became moderated. The observation of activity-peak brought about by irradiation contribute to the optimization of chemical intervention. This treatment could provide an effective and sustainable technique in integrated pest management.

Three historical works written in the 4th century have so far been examined from the point of view of style and narration: the “breviaria” of Aurelius Victor, Eutropius, and Festus. The topics chosen for my analysis are the use of tenses, word order in the sentence, problems of textual cohesion, and narrator’s attitude. The three texts mainly follow the classical tradition, but in some features, they are close to the register of the spoken language. Features expressing the narrator’s subjectivity are shown here through a comparison of paragraphs presenting parallel themes.

The paper discusses the question of media reflexivity and allegorical figuration in Lucian Pintilie’s 1992 film, The Oak. Through a fictional narrative, the film reflects on the communist period from the historical context of the post-1989 transition strongly marked by the after-effects of dictatorship and by political, social and economic instability. By incorporating a diegetic Polaroid camera and a home movie, The Oak displays a reflexive preoccupation with the mediality and the socio-cultural constructedness of the image. The figurative, allegorizing tendency of the film – manifest in the subversive recontextualization of grand narratives, iconographic codes or images of art history – also foregrounds the question of cultural mediation. I argue that by displaying the non-transparency of the cinematic image and the cultural mediatedness of the “real,” the media-reflexive and allegorical-figurative discourse of the film can be regarded as a critical historical response to the social and representational crises linked to the communist era, but at the same time it may be symptomatic of the social, cultural, political anxieties of post-1989 transition.1

Rare-earth-doped optical materials are important for light sources in optoelectronics, as well as for efficient optical amplification elements and other elements of photonics. On the basis of the previously developed method of anhydrous, low-temperature synthesis of Er/Yb oxides from their chlorides we fabricated proper nanoparticles with defined parameters and used them for the development of optically transparent, luminescent polymer nanocomposite with low optical scattering, suitable for direct, light-induced formation of photonic elements. Introduction of preformed gold nanoparticles in such a nanocomposite was also performed and an enhancement of luminescence due to the influence of plasmon effects was detected.

PAF, a small antifungal protein from Penicillium chrysogenum, inhibits the growth of several pathogenic filamentous fungi, including members of the Aspergillus genus. PAF has been proven to have no toxic effects in vivo in mice by intranasal application. To test its efficacy against invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), experiments were carried out in mice suffering from IPA. Adult mice were immunosuppressed and then infected with Aspergillus fumigatus. After stable infection, the animals were inoculated with PAF intranasally at a concentration of 2.7 mg/kg twice per day. At this concentration—which is highly toxic in vitro to A. fumigatus—the mortality of the animals was slightly delayed but finally all animals died. Histological examinations revealed massive fungal infections in the lungs of both PAF-treated and untreated animal groups. Because intranasally administered PAF was unable to overcome IPA, modified and combined therapies were introduced. The intraperitoneal application of PAF in animals with IPA prolonged the survival of the animals only 1 day. Similar results were obtained with amphotericin B (AMB), with PAF and AMB being equally effective. Combined therapy with AMB and PAF—which are synergistic in vitro—was found to be more effective than either AMB or PAF treatment alone. As no toxic effects of PAF in mammals have been described thus far, and, moreover, there are so far no A. fumigatus strains with reported inherent or acquired PAF resistance, it is worth carrying out further studies to introduce PAF as a potential antifungal drug in human therapy.Emerging Microbes & Infections (2016) 5, e114; doi:10.1038/emi.2016.116; published online 9 November 2016

Citrinin (CIT) is a mycotoxin produced by several Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Monascus species. CIT occurs worldwide in different foods and drinks and causes health problems for humans and animals. Human serum albumin (HSA) is the most abundant plasma protein in human circulation. Albumin forms stable complexes with many drugs and xenobiotics; therefore, HSA commonly plays important role in the pharmacokinetics or toxicokinetics of numerous compounds. However, the interaction of CIT with HSA is poorly characterized yet. In this study, the complex formation of CIT with HSA was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy and ultrafiltration techniques. For the deeper understanding of the interaction, thermodynamic, and molecular modeling studies were performed as well. Our results suggest that CIT forms stable complex with HSA (logK ~ 5.3) and its primary binding site is located in subdomain IIA (Sudlow’s Site I). In vitro cell experiments also recommend that CIT-HSA interaction may have biological relevance. Finally, the complex formations of CIT with bovine, porcine, and rat serum albumin were investigated, in order to test the potential species differences of CIT-albumin interactions.

Mycotoxin-producing Aspergilli (Circumdati, Flavi, and Nigri), usually associated with contaminated food, may also cause respiratory disorders and are insufficiently studied in water-damaged indoor environments. Airborne (N = 71) and dust borne (N = 76) Aspergilli collected at post-flood and control locations in Croatia resulted in eleven different species based on their calmodulin marker: A. ochraceus, A. ostianus, A. pallidofulvus, A. sclerotiorum, and A. westerdijkiae (Circumdati); A. flavus (Flavi); and A. tubingensis, A. welwitschiae, A. niger, A. piperis, and A. uvarum (Nigri). Most of the airborne (73%) and dust borne (54%) isolates were found at post-flood locations, and the highest concentrations measured in indoor air (5720 colony-forming units (CFU)/m3) and dust (2.5 × 105 CFU/g) were up to twenty times higher than in the control locations. A. flavus dominated among airborne isolates (25%) at the unrepaired locations, while 56% of the dust borne Aspergilli were identified as A. tubingensis and A. welwitschiae. The ability of identified isolates to produce mycotoxins aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), fumonisin B2 (FB2), and ochratoxin A were assessed by LC-MS analysis. All ochratoxin A (OTA)-producing Circumdati belonged to A. westerdijkiae (13.7 ± 15.81 µg/mL); in the section, FlaviA. flavus produced AFB1 (2.51 ± 5.31 µg/mL), while A. welwitschiae and A. niger (section Nigri) produced FB2 (6.76 ± 13.51 µg/mL and 11.24 ± 18.30 µg/mL, respectively). Water damage dominantly supported the occurrence of aflatoxigenic A. flavus in indoor environments. Yet unresolved, the causal relationship of exposure to indoor Aspergilli and adverse health effects may support the significance of this research.

Telemonitoring systems equipped with photoplethysmography-based contour analysis of the digital arterial volume pulse (DVP) can be optimal tools for remote monitoring of cardiovascular patients; however, the method is known to be sensitive to errors. We aimed to show that DVP analysis is a reliable method to track cardiovascular status. We used our proprietary SCN4ALL telemedicine system and analyzed nine parameters derived from the DVP and its second derivative (SDDVP). First, we assessed the repeatability of system measurements by detecting artificial signals. Then test–retest reliability of human measurements was evaluated in healthy individuals under standardized conditions. The SCN4ALL system analyzed each parameter with high accuracy (coefficients of variation (CVs) < 1%). Test–retest reliability of most parameters (stiffness index, reflection index, left ventricular ejection time index, b/a, heart rate) was satisfactory (CVs < 10%) in healthy individuals. However, aging index and d/a ratio derived from the SDDVP were more variable. Photoplethysmography-based pulse contour analysis is a reliable method to monitor cardiovascular status if measurements are performed with a system of high accuracy. Our results highlighted that SDDVP parameters can be interpreted with limitations due to (patho)physiological variations of the DVP. We recommend the evaluation of these parameters only in measurements where all inflections of SDDVP are detected reliably.

Numerous fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs exist in the metamorphic basement of the Pannonian Basin in Hungary. Many decades of experience in production have proven that these reservoirs are highly compartmentalised, resulting in a complex mosaic of permeable and impermeable domains situated next to each other. Consequently, in most fields, only a small amount of the total hydrocarbon reserve can be extracted. This paper aims to locate the potential migration pathways inside the most productive basement reservoir of the Pannonian Basin, using a multiscale approach. To achieve this, evaluation well-log data, DFN modelling and a composition analysis of fluid trapped in a vein-filling zeolite phase are combined. Data on a single well are presented as an example. The results of the three approaches indicate the presence of two highly fractured intervals separated by a barely fractured amphibolite. The two zones are probably part of the communicating fracture system inside the single metamorphic mass. The gas analysis further specifies the migrated fluids and indicates hydrocarbons of a composition similar to that of the recently produced oil. Consequently, we conclude that the two zones do not only form an ancient migration pathway but are also members of a more recent hydrocarbon system.

Though the antibacterial effect is advantageous, silver and silver nanoparticles can negatively affect the viability of human tissues. This study aims to check the viability of cells on surfaces with different particle size and to find the biologically optimal configuration. We investigated the effect of modified thickness of vaporized silver and applied heat and time on the physical characteristics of silver nanoparticle covered titanium surfaces. Samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, and drop shape analyzer. To investigate how different physical surface characteristics influence cell viability, Alamar Blue assay for dental pulp stem cells was carried out. We found that different surface characteristics can be achieved by modifying procedures when creating silver nanoparticle covered titanium. The size of the nanoparticles varied between 60 to 368 nm, and hydrophilicity varied between 63 and 105 degrees of contact angle. Investigations also demonstrated that different physical characteristics are related to a different level of viability. Surfaces covered with 60 nm particle sizes proved to be the most hydrophilic, and the viability of the cells was comparable to the viability measured on the untreated control surface. Physical and biological characteristics of silver nanoparticle covered titanium, including cell viability, have an acceptable level to be used for antibacterial effects to prevent periimplantitis around implants.

Pursuing various sustainable development goals is posing new challenges for societies, policymakers, and researchers alike. This study implements an exploratory approach to address the complexity of food security and nuance its relationship with other grand challenges, such as energy use and climate change, in Central European countries. A multiple factor analysis (MFA) suggests that the three pillars of food security relate differently to climate change: food affordability and food accessibility positively correlate with climate change, while food quality has a negative association with temperature rise. However, if countries switched to renewable energy resources, all three pillars of food security could be achieved simultaneously. The study also underlines regional inequalities regarding grand challenges and emphasizes the need for innovative local solutions, i.e., advances in agriculture systems, educational programs, and the development of environmental technologies that consider social and economic issues.

Aromatic isocyanides including isocyanonaphthalene derivatives have been proven to be very effective fluorescent sensors for the quantification of Hg(II) ions in water. Thus, the reaction of 1,5-isocyanoaminonaphthalene (1,5-ICAN), which is one of the most important members of this family, with water and HgCl2 as the oxidation agents, was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry in order to get deeper insight into the kinetics and mechanistic details of this complex reaction. The reactions of 1,5-ICAN with water and HgCl2 were performed in various water/co-solvent mixtures of different compositions. The co-solvents used in this study were both aprotic solvents including tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile and N,N-dimethylformamide and protic solvents, such as ethanol and 2-propanol. It was found that in aprotic solvents the conversion of the isocyano group to amino moiety takes place, while in protic solvents the corresponding carbamate (urethane) group is formed in addition to the amino moiety. The variation of the resulting fluorescence intensities versus time curves were described using an irreversible, consecutive reaction model, in which the formation of isocyanate and carbamic acid intermediates, as well as diamino and carbamate (in the case of protic solvents) products were assumed. The formation of these intermediates and products was unambiguously confirmed by mass spectrometric measurements. Furthermore, by fitting the model to the experimental fluorescence versus time curves, the corresponding rate coefficients were determined. It was observed that the overall rate of transformation of the isocyano group to amino moiety increased with the water concentration and the polarity of the co-solvent. It was also supported that formation of diamino and carbamate derivatives in protic solvents takes place simultaneously and that the ratio of the amino to the carbamate function increased with the increasing water concentration. In addition, with an extension, the model presented herein proved to be capable of describing the kinetics of the transformation of 1,5-diisocyanonaphthalene (1,5-DIN) into 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (1,5-DAN) in the mixtures of water/aprotic solvents.

In this report, the synthesis of poly(ω-pentadecalactone) (PPDL) (co)polymers and their incorporation into polyurethanes (PUs) are reported. Optimal conditions for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ω-pentadecalactone (PDL) using dibutyltin dilaurate catalyst were established. For the synthesis of linear and crosslinked PUs, 50 kDa poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and 1,6-hexamethylenediisocyanate (HDI) were used. The obtained polyurethanes were characterized by Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (AT-FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA). The DMA of the selected sample showed a rubbery plateau on the storage modulus versus temperature curve predicting shape memory behavior. Indeed, good shape memory performances were obtained with shape fixity (Rf) and shape recovery (Rr) ratios.

Formation of inclusion complexes involving a cavitand derivative (as host) and an antimetabolite drug, methotrexate (as guest) was investigated by photoluminescence measurements in dimethyl sulfoxide solvent. Molecular modeling performed in gas phase reflects that, due to the structural reasons, the cavitand can include the methotrexate in two forms: either by its opened structure with free androsta-4-en-3-one-17α-ethinyl arms or by the closed form when all the androsta-4-en-3-one-17α-ethinyl arms play role in the complex formation. Experiments reflect enthalpy driven complex formation in higher temperature range while at lower temperature the complexes are stabilized by the entropy gain.

Ochratoxins, patulin, deoxynivalenol, and T-2 toxin are mycotoxins, and common contaminants in food and drinks. Human serum albumin (HSA) forms complexes with certain mycotoxins. Since HSA can affect the toxicokinetics of bound ligand molecules, the potential interactions of ochratoxin B (OTB), ochratoxin C (OTC), patulin, deoxynivalenol, and T-2 toxin with HSA were examined, employing spectroscopic (fluorescence, UV, and circular dichroism) and ultrafiltration techniques. Furthermore, the influence of albumin on the cytotoxicity of these xenobiotics was also evaluated in cell experiments. Fluorescence studies showed the formation of highly stable OTB–HSA and OTC–HSA complexes. Furthermore, fluorescence quenching and circular dichroism measurements suggest weak or no interaction of patulin, deoxynivalenol, and T-2 toxin with HSA. In ultrafiltration studies, OTB and OTC strongly displaced the Sudlow’s site I ligand warfarin, while other mycotoxins tested did not affect either the albumin binding of warfarin or naproxen. The presence of HSA significantly decreased or even abolished the OTB- and OTC-induced cytotoxicity in cell experiments; however, the toxic impacts of patulin, deoxynivalenol, and T-2 toxin were not affected by HSA. In summary, the complex formation of OTB and OTC with albumin is relevant, whereas the interactions of patulin, deoxynivalenol, and T-2 toxin with HSA may have low toxicological importance.

The sulfamethazine drug interaction with carbon nanotubes was investigated with the aim of improving the adsorption capacity of the adsorptive materials. Experiments were performed to clarify how the molecular environment affects the adsorption process. Single-walled carbon nanotubes have a higher removal efficiency of sulfamethazine than pristine or functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Although the presence of cyclodextrin molecules improves the solubility of sulfamethazine, it reduces the adsorption capacity of the carbon nanotube towards the sulfamethazine drug and, therefore, inhibits the removal of these antibiotic pollutants from waters by carbon nanotubes.

Endophytic fungi in symbiotic association with their host plant are well known to improve plant growth and reduce the adverse effects of both biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, fungal endophytes are beginning to receive increased attention in an effort to find growth-promoting strains that could be applied to enhance crop yield and quality. In our study, the plant growth-promoting activities of endophytic fungi isolated from various parts of Sophora flavescens (a medicinally important plant in Mongolia and China) have been revealed and investigated. Fungal isolates were identified using molecular taxonomical methods, while their plant growth-promoting abilities were evaluated in plate assays. Altogether, 15 strains were isolated, representing the genera Alternaria, Didymella, Fusarium and Xylogone. Five of the isolates possessed phosphate solubilization activities and twelve secreted siderophores, while all of them were able to produce indoleacetic acid (IAA) in the presence or absence of tryptophan. The endogenous and exogenous accumulation of IAA were also monitored in liquid cultures using the HPLC-MS/MS technique to refine the plate assay results. Furthermore, for the highest IAA producer fungi, the effects of their extracts were also examined in plant bioassays. In these tests, the primary root lengths of the model Arabidopsis thaliana were increased in several cases, while the biomasses were significantly lower than the control IAA treatment. Significant alterations have also been detected in the photosynthetic pigment (chlorophyll-a, -b and carotenoids) content due to the fungal extract treatments, but these changes did not show any specific trends.

Traditional strategies (such as education, economic incentives or prohibitions) targeted at altering dietary habits only influence health-conscious consumers. Less health-conscious consumers are less capable of self-regulatory behavior, therefore they are more likely to be influenced through perception. The present study aimed to examine how external cues such as labeling affect the consumer’s perception of foods. The paper includes a case study based on an experiment. In the experiment the same cheese was tested with four different types of labeling (labeled “conventional”, “low salt”, “low fat” and “low salt and low fat”). It was found that the health halo effect worked in the case of cheese testing. In spite of all the samples being identical, the healthy samples were associated with considerably less sensory pleasure. The use of labels by the producers resulted in exactly the opposite effect to that intended. The experiment confirmed the efficiency of the application of this type of behavior-oriented nudge.

Interaction of 4-quinazolinone with tetrakis (3,5-dicarboxylatophenoxy)-cavitand derivative has been studied in methanol and dimethylformamide media using fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular modeling methods. Results show temperature dependent complex formation: either the entropy gain or the high enthalpy changes are responsible for the formation of stable complexes in two separated temperature regions. However, different thermodynamic parameters are associated to different conformations of the complexes: while the high entropy gain associated to the formation of deeply included guest in methanol, the high entropy gain is associated with the formation of weakly included guest in dimethylformamide solvent. This finding highlights the importance of dynamic properties of the species interacted in different solvents.

Yeast resistance to antifungal drugs is a major public health issue. Fungal adhesion onto the host mucosal surface is still a partially unknown phenomenon that is modulated by several actors among which fibronectin plays an important role. Targeting the yeast adhesion onto the mucosal surface could lead to potentially highly efficient treatments. In this work, we explored the effect of fibronectin on the nanomotion pattern of different Candida albicans strains by atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based nanomotion detection and correlated the cellular oscillations to the yeast adhesion onto epithelial cells. Preliminary results demonstrate that strongly adhering strains reduce their nanomotion activity upon fibronectin exposure whereas low adhering Candida remain unaffected. These results open novel avenues to explore cellular reactions upon exposure to stimulating agents and possibly to monitor in a rapid and simple manner adhesive properties of C. albicans.

Multiple drug resistant fungi pose a serious threat to human health, therefore the development of completely new antimycotics is of paramount importance. The in vitro antifungal activity of the original, 1-amino-5-isocyanonaphthalenes (ICANs) was evaluated against reference strains of clinically important Candida species. Structure-activity studies revealed that the naphthalene core and the isocyano- together with the amino moieties are all necessary to exert antifungal activity. 1,1-N-dimethylamino-5-isocyanonaphthalene (DIMICAN), the most promising candidate, was tested further in vitro against clinical isolates of Candida species, yielding a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.04−1.25 µg/mL. DIMICAN was found to be effective against intrinsically fluconazole resistant Candida krusei isolates, too. In vivo experiments were performed in a severly neutropenic murine model inoculated with a clinical strain of Candida albicans. Daily administration of 5 mg/kg DIMICAN intraperitoneally resulted in 80% survival even at day 13, whereas 100% of the control group died within six days. Based on these results, ICANs may become an effective clinical lead compound family against fungal pathogens.

The immunological synapse (IS) is a specialized contact area formed between a T cell and an antigen presenting cell (APC). Besides molecules directly involved in antigen recognition such as the TCR/CD3 complex, ion channels important in the membrane potential and intracellular free Ca2+ concentration control of T cells are also recruited into the IS. These are the voltage-gated Kv1.3 and Ca2+-activated KCa3.1 K+ channels and the calcium release-activated Ca2+ channel (CRAC). However, the consequence of this recruitment on membrane potential and Ca2+ level control is not known. Here we demonstrate that the membrane potential (MP) of murine T cells conjugated with APCs in an IS shows characteristic oscillations. We found that depolarization of the membrane by current injection or by increased extracellular K+ concentration produced membrane potential oscillations (MPO) significantly more frequently in conjugated T cells than in lone T cells. Furthermore, oscillation of the free intracellular Ca2+ concentration could also be observed more frequently in cells forming an IS than in lone cells. We suggest that in the IS the special arrangement of channels and the constrained space between the interacting cells creates a favorable environment for these oscillations, which may enhance the signaling process leading to T cell activation.

In this article, the capability of encoding information using a homologous series of monodisperse monomethoxypolyethylene glycols (mPEG), with a number of ethylene oxide units ranging from nEO = 5 to 8, and monodisperse linear aliphatic isocyanates containing a number of CH2 units from 3 to 7, is demonstrated. The “click” reaction of the two corresponding homologous series yielded 20 different isocyanate end-capped polyethylene glycol derivatives (mPEG-OCONHR) whose sodiated adduct ion’s nominal m/z values spanned from 360 to 548, providing an average ca. 8 m/z unit for the storage of one-bit information. These mPEG-OCONHR oligomers were then used to encode information in binary sequences using a 384-well MALDI sample plate and employing the common dried-droplet sample preparation method capable of encoding 20 bit, i.e., 2.5 byte information in one spot, was employed. The information stored in the spots was read by MALDI-TOF MS using the m/z value of the corresponding mPEG-OCONHR oligomers. The capability of the method to store data was demonstrated by writing and reading a text file, visualizing a small picture and capturing a short audio file written in Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) sequence. Due to the very large similarities in the chemical structures of the encoding oligomers and their “easy to be ionized” property, as well as their very similar ionization efficiencies, the MALDI-TOF MS signal intensities from each compound was so strong and unambiguous that complete decoding could be performed in each case. In addition, the set of the proposed encoding oligomers can be further extended to attain higher bit “densities”.

The complexity of developing and applying increasingly sophisticated new medicinal products has led to the participation of many non-medically qualified scientists in multi-disciplinary non-clinical and clinical drug development teams world-wide. In this introductory paper to the “IFAPP International Ethics Framework for Pharmaceutical Physicians and Medicines Development Scientists” it is argued that all members of such multidisciplinary teams must share the scientific and ethical responsibilities since they all influence directly or indirectly both the outcome of the various phases of the medicines development projects and the safety of the research subjects involved. The participating medical practitioner retains the overriding responsibility and the final decision to stop a trial if the well-being of the research subjects is seriously endangered. All the team members should follow the main ethical principles governing human research, the respect for autonomy, justice, beneficence and non-maleficence. Nevertheless, the weighing of these principles might be different under various conditions according to the specialty of the members.

The Appearance of the Politicization of the University Life in Debrecen in 1939. A student’s Accusation against Béla Tankó and Bálint Hóman’s response. A very special source of the history of the Hungarian higher education and of the history of the University of Debrecen that accusation which was made in the autumn of 1939 by a student. This short and nameless letter was an accusation against professor Béla Tankó who had taken a note about the German origin of Bálint Hóman who was the Secretary of Religion and Public Education at that time. One of the students who was the member of the Árpád Comradeship Association wrote a short and modest letter to Hóman about it. This was a clear sign of the radicalization and the politicization of the whole society and of the life in the Hungarian universities. Also had been found the response of Bálint Hóman who sent back this accusation to Béla Tankó with a short letter in which he interpreted this as a wrong deliver. This unpleasant case had been solved by Hóman this way, but the radicalization of the students of the universities and the devaluation of the Hungarian political culture continued.

The Formation and Development of Physical Education at the University of Debrecen Between the Two World Wars. This study offers an overview of the beginnings, formation, as well as the production of the institutional and human resources of university-level physical education. The reader is provided with information pertaining to the difficulties relating to the introduction of mandatory university-level physical education and the role Debrecen—and Debrecen’s Gymnastics Association: DTE—played in securing accommodation for the gymnastics lessons. Thus, we can learn about the changes and shifts, from optional to obligatory, of the university physical education of female students. We can also receive information as to who the first physical education instructors at the university were and additional information concerning those university educators who were the chief supporters of the systematic exercise of students and of university-level sports. It was due to the dedication of these people that it was in Debrecen that a position for sports physician was first created. The duties of the sports physician included the health check-up of students who participated in the gymnastics exercises. In addition, the study also includes information pertaining to how the university sports centre was created and extended as well as how the interest of the student body in exercise was enhanced by the University Athletic Club of Debrecen (DEAC)

Small, cysteine-rich and cationic antimicrobial proteins (AMPs) from filamentous ascomycetes represent ideal bio-molecules for the development of next-generation antifungal therapeutics. They are promising candidates to counteract resistance development and may complement or even replace current small molecule-based antibiotics in the future. In this study, we show that a 14 amino acid (aa) long peptide (Pγ) spanning the highly conserved γ-core motif of the Penicillium chrysogenum antifungal protein (PAF) has antifungal activity against the opportunistic human pathogenic yeast Candida albicans. By substituting specific aa we elevated the positive net charge and the hydrophilicity of Pγ and created the peptide variants Pγvar and Pγopt with 10-fold higher antifungal activity than Pγ. Similarly, the antifungal efficacy of the PAF protein could be significantly improved by exchanging the respective aa in the γ-core of the protein by creating the protein variants PAFγvar and PAFγopt. The designed peptides and proteins were investigated in detail for their physicochemical features and mode of action, and were tested for cytotoxicity on mammalian cells. This study proves for the first time the important role of the γ-core motif in the biological function of an AMP from ascomycetes. Furthermore, we provide a detailed phylogenetic analysis that proves the presence and conservation of the γ-core motif in all AMP classes from Eurotiomycetes. We emphasize the potential of this common protein motif for the design of short antifungal peptides and as a protein motif in which targeted aa substitutions enhance antimicrobial activity.

Based on the allocations and distributions of subsidies in the sheep sector in the previous years (2004-2009), the authors examined the sum of aids claimed and paid from 2010 to 2016 and their farm-size related changes. The following data were collected from the Agricultural and Rural Development Institute on payments under specific subsidy titles, classified by sheep and goat farm sizes: 0-50; 51-100, 101-200, 201-300 and also 0-100, 101-300, 301-500, 501-1000, 1001-5000 and above 5000. Data procession was carried out by the SPSS for Windows 22 program. The size and population of the examined sheep sector underwent visible changes during the studied years leading to a reduction rather than growth. Their analysis highlights that size distribution of sheep farms has changed significantly in recent years, combined with simultaneous modifications of their sheep stock sizes in production. Their conclusions suggest that effects of years and farm sizes in the sheep and goat sector have considerably modified the aid sums paid under different titles. JEL Classification: H5, Q14

Articles of the Student Relief Fund (Bursa Academica) of the University of Debrecen. Bursa Academica, the student welfare fund of the University of Debrecen was one of those student welfare institutions between the two world wars whose existence and operation were unknown even to those members of the general public who show interest in the history of the university. In publishing the full text of the articles of association and by prefixing an introductory essay before it, the author’s objective is to adequately clarify the essence and importance of the institution’s operation. Both in terms of its noble objectives and its activities maintained, the Bursa Academica deserves to be remembered, for it played, together with other similar institutions, an outstanding role in student life.

the Centenary of the Birth of János Arany and the War. The Message of the Memorial Society from Nagyszalonta to the University of Debrecen about the Cancellation of the Ceremony. One hundred years ago and one hundred years after the birth of Arany the memorial society prepared for a nationwide celebration in Nagyszalonta. They sent their official invitation to every literary and scholarly society, with the University of Debrecen among them. Nándor Láng, who was the Rector of the university in the 1916/17. academic year gave the mandate to Károly Pap to attend the ceremony and represent the university. Károly Pap, who was the dean of the faculty of arts, accepted this with pleasure because he was a researcher of the poetry of Arany. But the ceremony was postponed because the train service became unreliable due to the war. The nationwide ceremony had to be cancelled because of the bad traffic conditions and it was never held in Nagyszalonta in 1917. This printed media sources inform us about this and the effect of the Great War on the centenary of the birth of János Arany.

Low intensity green light emitting diodes (LED) were shown to be an effective light source to induce the photopolymerization of an acrylate-based photocurable dental restorative resin mixture of bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (BisGMA), triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), and diurethane dimethacrylate (UDMA), in combination with fluorinated diaryl titanocene (Irgacure 784). Dental matrices were prepared by the LED light source at different intensities. The mechanical properties, such as Vickers microhardness, compressive strength, diametric tensile strength, flexural strength, and E-modulus of the created samples, were investigated. The kinetics of the photopolymerization was followed by Raman spectroscopy and conversion values were determined. It was found that, despite its narrow-emission range centered at a wavelength of 531 nm, the green LED light source is suitable for the preparation of dental matrices with good mechanical properties and high conversion values.

Bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) successfully grow in polyculture with carp, feeding on plankton. It has good quality of meat for both consumption and industrial processing. Th e quantity of by-products obtained during primary processing of bighead carp and chemical characteristics of internal organs were investigated in this paper. Th e total average weight of by-products was 760.45 g (42.31%) in relation to live body weight, which was cca 1797.5 g. Th e by-product contributing to the largest quantity to total live body weight was the head with 529.39 g (29.45% of live body weight), followed by complete internal organs and tail and fi ns, which weighed 137.67 g (7.66%) and 68.82 g (3.83%), respectively Chemical composition of internal organs of bighead carp was mostly water (60.99%), following by crude fats and crude proteins (21.20% and 10.61%, respectively). The low collagen content (15.25% of total crude protein) indicates the high nutritional quality of protein content from internal organs. Nitrogenous complexes from the internal organs were predominantly proteins. Digestible nitrogen was approximately equal to total nitrogen (92.04%), indicating that all proteins of the internal organs had high biological value. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that bighead carp internal organs could be important sources of proteins and fats, and thus, could be used in Serbia as a raw material for feed and technical fat production.

Cet article se penche sur l’écrivain Ferenc Herczeg (1863-1954), l’un des premiers représentants de la culture midllebrow hongroise, tombé dans un oubli presque total, pour la raison, notamment, qu’il figure justement dans la vaste zone grise qui sépare la culture d’élite de la culture de masse durant la première moitié du 20e siècle. Après avoir donné un bref aperçu de sa carrière, nous analyserons les thèmes et les procédés caractéristiques de son oeuvre, et présenterons les supports qui l’ont diffusée (livres, séries, presse) et, dans un dernier temps, nous analyserons sa dimension transmédiatique à travers les adaptations cinématographiques que cet auteur a suscitées pour éclairer la tendance des logiques culturelles vers le « moyen » et les facteurs politiques, économiques et culturels contribuant à la formation d’un public moyen hongrois.

Facies character, diagenesis, geochemical signature, porosity, permeability, and geometry of the upper Pleistocene Tivoli travertines were investigated integrating information from six borehole cores, drilled along a 3 km N-S transect, and quarry faces, in order to propose a revised depositional model. Travertines overlie lacustrine and alluvial plain marls, siltstones, sandstones and pyroclastic deposits from the Roman volcanic districts. In the northern proximal area, with respect to the inferred hydrothermal vents, travertines accumulated in gently-dipping, decametre-scale shallow pools of low-angle terraced slopes. The intermediate depositional zone, 2 km southward, consisted of smooth and terraced slopes dipping S and E. In the southernmost distal zone, travertine marshes dominated by coated vegetation and Charophytes interfingered with lacustrine siltstones and fluvial sandstones and conglomerates. Travertine carbon and oxygen stable isotope data confirm the geothermal origin of the precipitating spring water. The travertine succession is marked by numerous intraclastic/extraclastic wackestone to rudstone beds indicative of non-deposition and erosion during subaerial exposure, due to temporary interruption of the vent activity or deviation of the thermal water flow. These unconformities identify nine superimposed travertine units characterized by aggradation in the proximal zone and southward progradation in the intermediate to distal zones. The wedge geometry of the travertine system reflects the vertical and lateral superimposition of individual fan-shaped units in response to changes in the vent location, shifting through time to lower elevations southward. The complexity of the travertine architecture results from the intermittent activity of the vents, their locations, the topographic gradient, thermal water flow paths and the rates and modes of carbonate precipitation.

Stratigraphically important conodonts occurring in the Anisian/Ladinian boundary interval are preliminarily described and their evolutionary lineages discussed. Among them some new taxa are proposed. Gondolella constricta postcornuta ssp. n., G. fueloepi, sp. n. with two new subspecies, G. liebermani Kovacs & Krystyn sp. n. and G.? praehungarica sp. n. Two of the new ones, G. constricta postcornuta and G. ?praehungarica are recognized as zonal index forms in the Balaton Highland Middle Triassic.

Bemutatok néhány olyan médiafelületet és fórumot, ahol ezek a tartalmak megjelentek a kampány folyamán, a csoportok korábbi akcióinak anatómiáját, és ezekből következően megpróbálom igazolni azt a feltételezést, hogy tevékenységük koordinált, és módszereik fokozatosan váltak egyre kifinomultabbá.

The paper examines the figures of ‘sensable’ intermediality in Péter Nádas’s book, Own Death (2006), an autobiographical account of the author’s heart failure and clinical death and in the screen adaptation of the book by Péter Forgács with the same title (Own Death, 2007). The book and the film problematize the cultural, discursive, and medial (un)representability of a liminal corporeal experience (illness, death) in which the very conditions of self-perception, bodily sensation, and conceptual thinking appear as “other.” In the film corporeal liminality and its medial translatability are not only thematized (e.g. through the untranslated German word umkippen ‘tip over,’ ‘fall over’), but shape the embodied experience of viewing through the use of photo-filmic imagery, still frames, fragmented close-ups, slow motion, or medially textured images. These do not only foreground the foreign, undomesticable experience of the body and “own death” as other, but also expose the medium, the membrane of the film, and confer the moving image a “haptic visuality” (Marks).
