251. [Evaluation of prevalent status of kala-azar in endemic area of Hubei Province]

Abstract

To identify the diagnosis of 14 cases with "kala-azar" previously reported in Hubei Province since 1989 and to evaluate the present status of the disease.Bone marrow smear, immunological test (LDTand IFAT), mouse inoculation, fungi culture, vector (Phlebotomus) and reservoir host (dog) survey.Among the 14 cases, 12 cases were progressive disseminated histoplasmois, one was an imported case and another one was a remnant skin type "kala-azar" case. An immunological survey was conducted during 1997-1999 in 25 townships located in 23 counties of 9 prefectures and cities. A total of 13,890 persons had been examined by LDT, the positive rate was 0.07%, no positive case was found among the persons under 40 years of age. During the survey, 1,756 persons had been examined by IFAT, the results were negative. No Phlebotomus chinensis had been found in the surveyed area. A total of 302 dogs were examined, no sick dog had been found.Kala-azar has been eradicated in Hubei Province.

252. [The enlarged translabyrinthine removal of large acoustic neuromas: 18 cases report]

Abstract

To investigate the surgical methods and results of enlarged translabyrinthine approach in the removal of large acoustic neuromas.A large mastoidectomy involved complete exposure of sigmoid sinus, the dura behind the sinus for at least 1 cm, the superior petrosal sinus and the middle fossa dura. The jugular bulb was exposed and pressed downwards if necessary. The internal auditory meatus was skeletonized and uncovered for at least 270 degrees. The debulking of the tumor began inside the anterior and inferior poles in order to find the brainstem and the facial nerve root as early as possible, then the dissection of the nerve was performed medially to laterally. Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring and postoperative CT and MRI were performed in all cases.Total removal was achieved in all 18 patients with tumors larger than 3 cm (mean size: 4.2 cm). There were no death as well as other complications such as intracranial infection and persistent cerebrospinal fluid leakage. There were no obvious cerebral sequela. The facial nerve was preserved both anatomically and functionally in 14 cases, with Grade I or II in 8 cases, Grade III or IV in 6 cases. Nerve interruption occurred in 4 cases who all had severe facial paralysis or nerve interruption before operation. 16 patients returned to work within 1-3 months.Total removal of large acoustic neuroma could be accomplished via the translabyrinthine approach, with good result of facial nerve function and minimum incidence of morbidity.

Abstract

This paper reports the venom from Agkistrodon halys Pallas have inhibitory activity against fungi and E. coli by tested in a disc diffusion assay. An antibacterial component--LAO from the venom were purified to homogeneous. It had not only antibacterial effect, but L-amino acid oxidase activity. And its enzymatic specific activity was 808 U/mg. The venom had at least 3 antibacterial components (I, II, III) as determined by acid polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis, LAO is the antibaterial components II.

Abstract

The effect of antibacterial peptide CM4 of Bombyx mori against E. coli K12 was investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ultrastructural changes of E. coli K12 were observed by the challenge of the purified antibacterial peptide CM4. The results showed that the antibacterial peptide caused a series of pathological changes on E. coli. SEM and TEM revealed aggregates of bacteria and SEM revealed wrinkled bacterial surfaces in the early stage. Thereafter, plasmolysis was observed with irregular holes appearing in the two ends of bacteria and the cytoplasmic contents of the cells leaking out. Finally, bacteria became empty vesicles and disintegrated into small fragments subsequently. Comparatively, the bacterial membrane was normal and the bacterial structure remained intact in the control group.

Abstract

We report measurements of branching fractions for psi(2S) decays into omega pi pi, b1 pi,omega f2(1270),omega KK, omega p pbar, phi pi pi, phi f0(980),phi KK, and an upper limit for phi p pbar final states based on a data sample of 4 X 10^6 psi(2S) events collected with the BESI detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The branching fractions for b1 pi and omega f2(1270) update previous BES results, while those for other decay modes are first measurements. The ratios of psi(2S)and J/psi branching fractions are smaller than what is expected from the 12% rule by a factor of five for omega f2(1270),by a factor of two for omega pi pi, omega p pbar, and phi KK, while for other studied channels the ratios are consistent with expectation within errors., 9 pages,12 figures and 1 table

Abstract

To probe the possibility of direct transfer of exogenous gene into peripheral nerve and its following expression in vivo.The PCMV beta plasmid containing cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter and Escherichia Coli (E. Coli), beta-Galactosidease (beta-Gal) structural gene (lacZ gene) was constructed and injected into the rabbit sciatic nerve. The control group was injected PBS solution. The injected nerves were sampled and tested by beta-Gal enzyme activity assay of the 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-beta-D-galactoside and beta-Gal histochemical stain.In the control group, no beta-Gal enzyme activity was detected in the different stages after operation, and beta-Gal histochemical stains showed positive. In the experimental group, enzyme activity could be detected from 2 days to 30 days after operation, and the histochemical stains showed negative.The exogenous gene can be transferred into peripheral nerve and expressed with bioactivity, thus the gene therapy to accelerate the recovery of nerve is practical.

Abstract

We report values of $R\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{hadrons})/\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ for 85 center-of-mass energies between 2 and $5\mathrm{GeV}$ measured with the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.

Abstract

The branching fraction of the psi(2S) decay into tau(+) tau(-) has been measured for the first time using the BES detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The result is B-tautau =(2.71+/-0.43+/-0.55) x 10(-3), where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This value, along with those for the branching fractions into e(+)c(-) and mu(+)mu(-) of this resonance, satisfy well the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining all these values with the leptonic width of the resonance, the total width of the psi(2S) is determined to be (252+/-37) keV.

Abstract

To investigate whether coadministration of the antimalarials artesunate and artemisinin alters the clearance of either drug.Ten healthy Vietnamese males (Group AS) were randomized to receive a single dose of 100 mg oral artesunate (pro-drug of dihydroartemisinin) on day -5 and then once daily for 5 consecutive days (days 1-5). Oral artemisinin (500 mg) was coadministered on days 1 and 5. Another 10 subjects (Group AM) were given 500 mg oral artemisinin on day -5 and then further doses on days 1-5. Artesunate 100 mg was given on days 1 and 5. Artemisinin and dihydroartemisinin plasma concentrations on days -5, 1 and 5 were quantified by h.p.l.c. with on-line postcolumn derivatization and u.v. detection.In Group AS, dihydroartemisinin oral clearance values (mean (95% CI)) were similar on day 1 (32 (22, 47)) l h(-1) and day 5 (38 (28, 51)) l h(-1) of daily artesunate administration but these mean values were approximately three fold higher compared with day -5 after a single dose (95 (56, 159)). In this group, artemisinin oral clearance increased from 196 (165, 232) l h(-1) on day 1-315 (241, 410) l h(-1) on day 5. In Group AM, dihydroartemisinin oral clearance on day 1 was 39 (34, 46) l h(-1) and increased 1.6 fold to 64 (48, 85) l h(-1) on day 5. In this group, artemisinin oral clearance increased sequentially (1.5 and 4.7 fold, respectively) from 207 (151, 285) l h(-1) on day -5-308 (257, 368) l h(-1) on day 1 and to 981 (678, 1420) l h(-1) on day 5. The increase in artemisinin oral clearance between days -5 and 1 (in the absence of artesunate) was similar to that between days 1 and 5 in Group AS subjects who took daily artesunate. Dihydroartemisinin was not a significant metabolite of artemisinin.Artesunate (dihydroartemisinin) did not alter the elimination of artemisinin. However, dihydroartemisinin elimination was inhibited by artemisinin. Artemisinin induced its own elimination even 5 days after a single oral dose. There was no evidence for the formation of dihydroartemisinin from artemisinin.

China has developed one of the most comprehensive environmental regulatory and policy framework in the world. This paper provides a description of the main institutions for environmental management in China, and overviews the regulatory and policy framework in place.

Abstract

Radiative decays of the radially excited charmonium resonance, \psi(2S), into \pi\pi, K Kbar and \eta\eta final states have been measured in a sample of 3.96 * 10^6 \psi(2S) events collected by the BES collaboration. The branching ratios B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma f_{2}(1270)) = (2.27 +- 0.26 +- 0.39) * 10^{-4} and B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma f_0(1710)) * B(f_0(1710) -> K^+ K^-) = (5.59 +- 1.12 +- 0.93) * 10^{-5} are obtained. When compared to the corresponding radiative J/\psi decays, the observed \psi(2S) radiative decay rates into \gamma f_2(1270) and \gamma f_0(1710) are consistent with the 15% rule., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The relationships of guard cell ABA content to eight stress-related physiological parameters were determined on intact Vicia faba L. plants that were grown hydroponically with split-root systems. Continuous stress was imposed by the addition of PEG to part of the root system. The water potentials of roots sampled after the addition of PEG were 0.25 MPa lower than the water potentials of other roots of the same plant, which were similar to the roots of untreated plants. The leaflet water potentials of plants sampled within 2 h of stress imposition were similar to those of control plants. However, leaf conductance was lower in plants sampled after only 20 min of stress imposition, and the root- and leaflet apoplastic ABA concentrations of these plants were higher than those of untreated plants. As the essence of this report, there was a linear relationship between guard cell ABA content and leaf conductance. Leaflet apoplastic ABA concentrations150 nM were also linearly related to leaf conductance, but higher leaflet apoplastic ABA concentration did not cause equally large further declines in leaf conductance. It is suggested that evaporation from guard cell walls caused ABA to accumulate in the guard cell apoplast and this pool was saturated at high leaflet apoplastic ABA concentrations.

Abstract

To investigate the inhibitory effect of down-regulating mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) on c-myc gene expression and further on cardiac fibroblast proliferation.Cultured neonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts was pretreated with a phosphorothioate-protected 17-mer antisense MAPK oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) directed against the initiation of translation sites of the p42 and p44 MAPK isoforms by liposomal transfection. A 17-mer sense and mismatch sequence MAPK ODN were used as controls. After liposomal transfecting, cells were exposed to angiotensin II (Ang II) 10 nmol.L-1 for 5 min and then harvested in lysis buffer. MAPK activity was measured by Western blot and P-81 phosphocellulose filter paper method by using [gamma-32P]ATP and myelin basic protein as substrates. c-myc mRNA expression stimulated by Ang II for 30 min was measured by Northern blot. DNA synthesis and collagen protein synthesis induced by Ang II for 24 h were measured by [3H]thymidine incorporation and [3H]Proline incorporation, respectively.Antisense ODN 0.2 mumol.L-1 reduced Ang II-induced MAPK activities by 72%, MAPK protein expression by 80%, and suppressed c-myc mRNA expression by 97%, respectively. [3H]thymidine incorporation and [3H]proline incorporation in Ang II-induced cardiac fibroblast were inhibited by 59% and 58%, respectively.A 17-mer MAPK antisense oligonucleotide directed againsts the initiation of translation sites of MAPK could specifically inhibit Ang II-stimulated cultured neonatal rat cardiac fibroblast proliferation through down-regulating MAPK activity and further depleting c-myc mRNA expression.

To investigate whether the effect of angiotensin (Ang) II or epidermal growth factor (EGF) on cardiac fibroblast proliferation involved in activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 or Ca(2+)-calmodulin dependent protein kinase(CCDPK) mediated by protein kinase C (PKC)-zeta.Relative activity of CCDPK was measured by Western blotting. DNA synthesis was assayed by [3H]thymidine incorporation.PDBU caused no decrease in Ang II- and 10% FCS-stimulated CCDPK activity and DNA synthesis. In contrary, 65% or 75% EGF- or tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TDPA, formally called PMA)--stimulated CCDPK activity and 38% or 42% [3H]thymidine incorporation treated by PDBU were inhibited, respectively. Meanwhile 70% and 72% CCDPK activities induced by Ang II and EGF were inhibited by PD 98059, respectively.PKC-zeta mediated Ang II-induced activation of CCDPK and cardiac fibroblast proliferation.

Abstract

The adapter protein RIP plays a crucial role in NF-kappaB activation by TNF. Here we show that triggering of the p55 TNF receptor induces binding of RIP to NEMO (IKKgamma), a component of the I-kappa-B-kinase (IKK) "signalosome" complex, as well as recruitment of RIP to the receptor together with the three major signalosome components, NEMO, IKK1 and IKK2, and some kind of covalent modification of the recruited RIP molecules. It also induces binding of NEMO to the signaling inhibitor A20, and recruitment of A20 to the receptor. Enforced expression of NEMO in cells revealed that NEMO can both promote and block NF-kappaB activation and dramatically augments the phosphorylation of c-Jun. The findings suggest that the signaling activities of the IKK signalosome are regulated through binding of NEMO to RIP and A20 within the p55 TNF receptor complex.

269. First Report of Burkholderia andropogonis Causing Bacterial Leaf Spot of Betel Palm in Hainan Province, China

Abstract

In May 2009, a severe bacterial disease of arecanut (Areca catechu L.) with an incidence of 100% was observed in a plantation of about 8,400 plants in Wenchang City, Hainan Province, China (19°47.171′ N, 110°54.335′ E). Symptoms consisted of small circular to elongated brown lesions, ranging from 1 to 105 mm in length and 1 to 21 mm in width, surrounded by yellow halos. White colonies, without fluorescent or diffusible pigments, were consistently recovered on King's B Medium plates from lesions surface-sterilized in 70% ethyl alcohol for 1 min. All isolates were gram-negative and each had a single, polar, sheathed flagellum. Isolates were identified as a Burkholderia sp. based on physiological and biochemical tests: oxidase and catalase positive, negative for arginine dihydrolase, gelatin hydrolysis and starch hydrolysis, and negative for acid production from levan (1,3). Sequences (approx. 1,400 bp each) of the 16S rRNA gene amplified from four isolates using primer pair 27F/1492R (2) (GenBank Accession Nos. JX415481, JX415479, JX415482, and JX415483) shared 99% sequence identity with that of Burkholderia andropogonis strain 6369 (DQ786951). Representative isolates Y11 (China General Microbiological Culture Collection Center No. CGMCC 1.12337), Y30 (CGMCC 1.12338), W15, and W20 were compared with B. andropogonis strain NCPPB No. 1012 and all caused a hypersensitive reaction on leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana. Isolate pathogenicity was tested twice with a total of three replications per isolate. Two young leaves each of 2-year-old arecanut plants were infiltrated with a bacterial suspension of 108 CFU/ml, then covered individually with plastic bags for 48 h, and incubated at 100% relative humidity with 16 h of daylight at 25°C by day and 8 h of darkness at 20°C by night. After 7 days, small water-soaked spots with yellow halos were observed and 60 days after inoculation, lesions developed similar to those caused by B. andropogonis in the field. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by reisolating bacteria from typical lesions on inoculated plants. These bacteria were identical to inoculated strains in colony morphology and sequences of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. To our knowledge, this is the first report of B. andropogonis infection on betel in Hainan Province, mainland China. This disease was first reported in Taiwan, a province of China. Conditions of high humidity and high temperature support disease outbreaks and infection can result in severe economic losses. In 2012, this disease also appeared on a number of plantations located in other counties. Abstract

PCR method was used to introduce the code sequence of Factor Xa cleavage site to the 5' end of cecropin CMIV mutant gene X, then the gene was cloned into the expression vector pGEX-KG, and was highly expressed in E. coli BL21 by IPTG induction. The fusion protein was purified by affinity-chromatography and was cleaved by Factor Xa. Cecropin X with antibacterial activity was obtained after purified by ion-exchange chromatography.

Abstract

In a sample of 7.8 million J/{psi} decays collected in the Beijing Spectrometer, the process J/{psi}{yields}{gamma}{eta}{sub c} is observed for five different {eta}{sub c} decay channels: K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, K{sup {+-}}K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup {+-}} (with K{sub S}{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}), {phi}{phi} (with {phi}{yields}K{sup +}K{sup -}) and K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}. From these signals, we determine the mass of {eta}{sub c} to be 2976.6{+-}2.9{+-}1.3 MeV. Combining this result with a previously reported result from a similar study using {psi}(2S){yields}{gamma}{eta}{sub c} detected in the same spectrometer gives m{sub {eta}{sub c}}=2976.3{+-}2.3{+-}1.2 MeV. For the combined samples, we obtain {gamma}{sub {eta}{sub c}}=11.0{+-}8.1{+-}4.1 MeV. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

A sample of 3.95M $\psi(2S)$ decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for $\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}$, $\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$, $\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0$, $\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+$, $\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}$, $\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385)$, $\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530)$, and $\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+$. These results are compared to expectations based on the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, factorization, and perturbative QCD., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables

The data were recorded by the Beijing Spectrometer (BES) at BEPC. A recoil charge method is applied to charm threshold data to determine the charge of the D meson in the recoil from (Formula presented) reconstructed (Formula presented) (Formula presented) mesons. The branching fractions (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) are determined from 10 events with a reconstructed D and a recoiling (Formula presented) In addition, a 90% C.L. upper limit of (Formula presented) is determined from a search for semileptonic decays of the (Formula presented) © 2000 The American Physical Society.

The angular distributions are compared with the general decay amplitude analysis of Cahn. We find that the dipion system requires some D wave amplitude, as well as S wave. On the other hand, the (Formula presented) relative angular momentum is consistent with being pure S wave. The decay distributions have been fit to heavy quarkonium models, including the Novikov-Shifman model. This model, which is written in terms of the parameter (Formula presented) predicts that D wave pions should be present. We determine (Formula presented) based on the joint (Formula presented) distribution. The fraction of D wave amplitude as a function of (Formula presented) is found to decrease with increasing (Formula presented) in agreement with the model. We have also fit the Mannel-Yan model, which is another model that allows D wave pions. © 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The cross section for charmed meson production at $\sqrt{s} = 4.03 $ and 4.14 GeV has been measured with the Beijing Spectrometer. The measurement was made using 22.3 $pb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ data collected at 4.03 GeV and 1.5 $pb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ data collected at 4.14 GeV. Inclusive observed cross sections for the production of charged and neutral D mesons and momentum spectra are presented. Observed cross sections were radiatively corrected to obtain tree level cross sections. Measurements of the total hadronic cross section are obtained from the charmed meson cross section and an extrapolation of results from below the charm threshold., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

Hadronic decays of the P-wave spin-triplet charmonium states \chi_cJ (J=0,1,2) are studied using a sample of \psi(2S) decays collected by the BES detector operating at the BEPC storage ring. Branching fractions for the decays \chi_c1 going to K_s^0 K^+ \pi^- + c.c., \chi_c0 going to K_s^0 K_s^0, \chi_c2 going to K_s^0 K_s^0, \chi_c0 going to \phi \phi, \chi_c2 going to \phi \phi and \chi_cJ going to K^+ K^- K^+ K^- are measured for the first time, and those for \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^-, $ \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- K^+ K^-, \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- p \bar{p} and \chi_cJ going to 3(\pi^+ \pi^-) are measured with improved precision. In addition, we determine the masses of the \chi_c0 and \eta_c to be M_{\chi_{c0}}=3414.1 \pm 0.6(stat) \pm 0.8 (sys) MeV and M_{\eta_c}=2975.8 \pm 3.9(stat) \pm 1.2 (sys) MeV., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, use revtex, submitted to Phys. Abstract

A comparison of the rates for {psi}(2S){r_arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}J/{psi}, J/{psi}{r_arrow}l{sup +}l{sup {minus}} and J/{psi}{r_arrow} anything is used to determine the J/{psi} leptonic branching fractions. The results are B(J/{psi}{r_arrow}e{sup +}e{sup {minus}})=(5.90{plus_minus}0.05{plus_minus}0.10){percent} and B(J/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}})=(5.84{plus_minus}0.06{plus_minus}0.10){percent}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Assuming lepton universality, the leptonic branching fraction of the J/{psi} is B(J/{psi}{r_arrow}l{sup +}l{sup {minus}})=(5.87{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.09){percent} per species. Abstract

We report the first measurements of the branching fractions: $B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma \eta') = (1.54 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.23) x 10^{-4}$ and $B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma \eta) = (0.53 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.08) x 10^{-4}$. The $\psi(2S)$ to $\gamma \eta'$ result is consistent with expectations of a model that considers the possibility of $\eta' - \eta$ mixing. The ratio of the $\psi(2S)$ to $\gamma \eta'$ and $\psi(2S)$ to $\gamma \eta$ rates is used to determine the pseudoscalar octet-singlet mixing angle.

Abstract

Triptonide, isolated from Tripterygium wilfordii Hook., was found to show significant antiinflammatory, immunosuppression and antitumor activities. A RP-HPLC method was applied to determine the plasma concentration of triptonide at different times in rats. Concentration-time curves after i.v., 0.7, 1.4 and 2.8 mg.kg-1 of triptonide were fitted to a two-compartment open model with T1/2 alpha of 0.167-0.195 h and T1/2 beta of 4.95-6.49 h. The area under curves (AUCs) were linearly related to the dosages (gamma = 0.9894). Systematic clearances (CLs) were independent of dosages. Mean residence time (MRT) of the three doses was 3.26-5.14 h by noncompartmental (the statistical moment method) analyses. The tissue distribution of triptonide in rats appeared to be wide throughout the body. The triptonide levels were high in the lung and liver, moderate in the heart, kidney, spleen and muscle and low in the testis, intestine and brain. Data of the urine and bile excretion indicated that only a small percent of unchanged triptonide was excreted. Plasma protein binding of triptonide rate was about 75%.

Abstract

The mass of the \ensuremath{\tau} lepton has been measured at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider using the Beijing Spectrometer. A search near threshold for ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ was performed. Candidate events were identified by requiring that one \ensuremath{\tau} decay via \ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\nu}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}, and the other via \ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\nu}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}. The mass value, obtained from a fit to the energy dependence of the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ cross section, is ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}$=1776.${9}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.5}^{+0.4}$\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 MeV.

Abstract

The Beijing Spectrometer (BES) experiment has observed purely leptonic decays of the D_s meson in the reaction e^+e^-→D_s^+D_s^- at a c.m. energy of 4.03 GeV. Three events are observed in which one D_s decays hadronically to φπ, K̅ ^(*0)K, or K̅^0K, and the other decays leptonically to μν_μ or τν_τ. Abstract

Nucleoside diphosphate kinase (E.C. 2.7.4.6.) is a broad substrate-specific enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of nucleoside diphosphates to the corresponding triphosphates in nucleic acid biosynthesis. In this report, we investigate its spatial and temporal distributions in yeast to understand how the enzyme exerts its gene function(s). Our results show that the enzyme is predominantly cytoplasmic. A substantial amount of enzyme activity (40-50%) may be associated with the cell membrane. Less than 1% of total activity was detected in the nuclear fraction. Approximately 3% was found in the mitochondrial fraction. When yeast cultures were synchronized, we found that Saccharomyces cerevisiae nucleoside diphosphate kinase did not show cell cycle periodicity, as Schizosaccharomyces pombe enzyme did. To explore its link with DNA synthesis, we investigated its relationship with the Cdc8p (dTMP kinase). We demonstrated a physical interaction between these proteins in vitro, as evidenced that the GST:Cdc8p protein affinity column could retain a subpopulation of nucleoside diphosphate kinase activity from yeast crude extract. Furthermore, when GST:Cdc8p protein was expressed in yeast, the protein could bind to the glutathione-agarose, along with nucleoside diphosphate kinase, suggesting that there is an interaction between GST:Cdc8p and nucleoside diphosphate kinase in vivo. Our results provide evidence for at least a two-enzyme complex that may well facilitate nucleotide channeling in the cell.

Abstract

The pumped storage plant undertakes the task for peak regulation, frequency modulation, phase modulation and accident standby in the electric grid system. Since the design consideration of a pumped storage plant is different from the conventional hydropower plant, the "S" shaped characteristic of pump-turbine will appear in four quadrants characteristic curves, and this characteristic will lead to a series of instabilities while the pump-turbine start at low water head. This paper presents the CFD simulation results of a pump-turbine model with the full flow passage which are compared with model test results. Based on the comparison, the hydraulic reason of the "S" shaped characteristic is discussed and a new concept of partial reverse pump is put forward, i.e. the reverse flow at inlet of runner is the real hydraulic cause of "S" shaped characteristic of a pump-turbine when the unit discharge descends to a certain degree. With the decrease of unit discharge, the effect of partial reverse pump becomes more and more obvious, which leads to an increase of head and finally results the "S" shaped characteristic of a pump-turbine.

Abstract

Immunohistochemical studies on 12 cases of clear cell variant of thyroid carcinoma demonstrated immunoreactivity for thyroglobulin in the clear cells of 11 tumors and for calcitonin in those of 1 tumor. This method can be helpful in differentiating primary clear cell carcinomas of the thyroid from those originating from other tissues. The clear cell variant of thyroid carcinoma exhibits a more aggressive local behavior, but satisfactory curative results can be obtained by sufficient surgical excision of the primary thyroid tumor and metastatic carcinoma of the cervical lymph nodes. The clear appearance of the tumor cells is mainly due to intracellular accumulation of large amounts of glycogen.

288. Threshold of transmission of Brugia malayi by Anopheles sinensis

Abstract

In an area of central China where Brugia malayi is transmitted by Anopheles sinensis, three villages were followed for 4 years without any control measures. Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) had been used in a control programme reducing the parasite rate in Shuiwa from 12.72 to 0.59%, in Gubomen from 3.18 to 1.55% and in Moshi from 5.62 to 2.81% (although this fell the following year to 2.23%) up until the start of the trial. The village populations, the human biting rate, the parous and the gonotrophic cycle were comparable for all the areas, yet the microfilariae rate dropped to 0.18% in Shuiwa, 0.31% in Gubomen, but not in Moshi where it increased from 2.23 to 2.43%. This indicated that Shuiwa and Gubomen were below the threshold of transmission. Due to the small number of positive cases remaining, the density measurements showed less change, but a separate study on 44 individuals followed for 6 years revealed that those above 13 microfilariae per 60 mm3 remained unchanged or increased, while those below progressively decreased their densities. The threshold of transmission of B. malayi by An. sinensis was considered to be between 1.55 and 2.23% of the population, providing no individual had a higher density than 12 microfilariae per 60 mm3.

An ovarian gynandroblastoma was found in a 59-year-old woman. The tumor consisting of mixed Sertoli-Leydig cells and granulosa-theca cells demonstrated no malignant features. Bisexual cells in gynandroblastoma derived from a common gonadal mesenchyme precursor or indifferent cell. The excision of appendages with tumor or hysterectomy was sufficient.

Abstract

The normal tongue originated from medical workers in our hospital and the Yin deficiency tongue originated from patients who possessed typical phenomena of Yin deficiency including smothery fever, dry mouth and so on. Determination of different area's temperature on tongue surface showed that the immediate temperature on areas of the tip, edge and medium of tongues and the delay temperature on areas of the tip, edge of tongues in patients with Yin deficiency was higher than that in healthy persons and possessed statistical significance. The tongue color in patients with Yin deficiency, the higher the tongue temperature obtained. This suggested that the degree of Yin deficiency relates to the tongue temperature. Lingual diagnosis is an essential component of treatment according to differential diagnosis in TCM. The authors consider that the determination of the tongue temperature by using thermal video will be helpful to raise the accuracy of TCM diagnosis and to appraise the real effect of Chinese herbs on patients with Yin deficiency.

Abstract

Carbon aerogels are prepared by a sol-gel process. By controlling the mass ratio of reactants and the molar ratio of resorcinol to catalyst (R/C), carbon aerogels with different microstructures can be developed. The electrical conductivity is measured by the van der Pauw method. The results show that the electrical conductivity increases with increase of both temperature and density of carbon aerogel. Cyclic voltammetry is a useful technique to investigate the electrochemical properties of carbon aerogel electrodes. The maximum specific capacitance of carbon aerogel electrode in H 2 SO 4 electrolyte is ∼86 F/g.

Abstract

The mantle sources of Tethyan basalts and gabbros from Iran, Tibet, the eastern Himalayas, the seafloor off Australia, and possibly Albania were isotopically similar to those of present-day Indian Ocean ridges and hotspots. Alteration-resistant incompatible element compositions of many samples resemble those of ocean-ridge basalts, although ocean-island-like compositions are also present. Indian-Ocean-type mantle was widespread beneath the Neotethys in the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, and present beneath at least parts of the Paleotethys as long ago as the Early Carboniferous. The mantle beneath the Indian Ocean today thus may be largely inherited Tethyan mantle. Although some of the Tethyan rocks may have formed in intra-oceanic back-arcs or fore-arcs, contamination of the asthenosphere by material subducted shortly before magmatism cannot be a general explanation for their Indian-Ocean-ridge-like low-206Pb/204Pb signatures. Supply of low-206Pb/204Pb material to the asthenosphere via plumes is not supported by either present-day Indian Ocean hotspots or the ocean-island-like Tethyan rocks. Old continental lower crust or lithospheric mantle, including accreted, little-dehydrated marine sedimentary material, provides a potential low-206Pb/204Pb reservoir only if sufficient amounts of such material can be introduced into the asthenosphere over time. Anciently subducted marine sediment is a possible low-206Pb/204Pb source only if the large increase of U/Pb that occurs during subduction-related dewatering is somehow avoided. Fluxing of low-U/Pb fluids directly into the asthenosphere during ancient dewatering and introduction of ancient pyroxenitic lower-crustal restite or basaltic lower-arc crust into the asthenosphere provide two other means of creating TethyanIndian Ocean mantle, but these mechanisms, too, have potentially significant problems. Abstract

In a sample of 58 million $J/\psi$ events collected with the BES II detector, the process J/$\psi\to\gamma\eta_c$ is observed in five decay channels: $\eta_c \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-$, $\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$, $K^\pm K^0_S \pi^\mp$ (with $K^0_S\to\pi^+\pi^-$), $\phi\phi$ (with $\phi\to K^+K^-$) and $p\bar{p}$.
