In switching and coupling devices, both co-propagating and counter-propagating solitons will be exploited to create waveguide structures. The dynamic behaviour of counter-propagating solitons depends on the length of the nonlinear medium and varies from non-oscillating to regular and irregular oscillations. In this paper, we present an in-depth investigation of the irregular regime showing the chaotic nature of the dynamics. To this end, we model the propagation of the two beams in paraxial approximation.
