Since the first confirmation of quantum monodromy in NCNCS (B. P. Winnewisser et al., Report No. TH07 in 60th International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy, Columbus, OH, (2005) and B. P. Winnewisser et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2005, 95, 243002) we have continued to explore its implications for the quantum structure of molecules. To confirm quantum monodromy bending-vibrational + axial-rotational quantum energy level information is needed. This was not directly available from the pure a-type rotational transitions available in 2005. The confirmation of quantum monodromy therefore had to be based on the fitting of the Generalised SemiRigid Bender (GSRB) model to the experimental rotational data. The GSRB is a physically motivated model and was able to extract the required information based on the changes of the rotational energy level structure upon excitation of the bending vibration and of the axial rotation. These results were, in some sense, predictions. Our goal here was to obtain a fully experimental and unambigous confirmation of quantum monodromy in NCNCS. This involved a series of experimental campaigns at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron. To coax the required information out of the masses of spectral data that had been obtained a variety of techniques had to be used. The result is that we can now confirm, without recourse to a theoretical model, the existence of quantum monodromy in the ν7 bending mode of NCNCS. As a side benefit we also confirm the power of the GSRB model to extract the required information from the previously available data. The predictions previously provided by the GSRB were surprisingly accurate. Only a slight augmentation of the model was required to allow us to refit it including the new data, while maintaining the quality of the fitting for that data previously available. We examine the effect of attending stand-alone technical high schools in Connecticut using regression discontinuity. Male students are 10 percentage points more likely to graduate from high school and have half a semester less time enrolled in college. Male students have 32% higher average quarterly earnings. Earnings effects may in part reflect general skills: male students have higher attendance rates and test scores, industry fixed effects explain less than one-third of earnings gains, and large earnings gains persist past traditional college going years. Miniaturization and scaling of semiconductor devices require development of innovative techniques to sustain advancements. A promising trend is the migration from 2D to 3D device architectures that necessitate fabrication of high-aspect-ratio narrow features through layers of different materials. Reactive ion etching can achieve this but poses unique challenges due to the requirement of etch chemistries capable of etching dissimilar materials with varying etch rates while maintaining high productivity. The choice of hardmask is also crucial, as it plays a critical role in determining efficacy of the etch process and the final shape of the feature being etched. To address these challenges, we introduce a new concept of hardmask engineering that involves a bilayer hardmask scheme consisting of a patterned conventional hardmask encapsulated with a thin layer of etch-resistant ruthenium (Ru) layer. Experimental results for etching multilayer stacks consisting of alternating pairs of SiO2 and Mo show that this engineered hardmask results in improved hardmask remaining and etch profile with smaller critical dimensions (CDs). Technology computer-aided design simulations with the Ru encapsulation layer on conventional carbon hardmask demonstrate increased poly-Si etch depth with reduced bow CD. This concept can be extended to any semiconductor nanofabrication step involving high-aspect-ratio etching where precise control of CDs is essential in the vertical direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using student-level data from Durham, North Carolina, we examine the potential impact of school choice programs on the peer environments of students who remain in their geographically assigned schools. We examine whether the likelihood of opting out of one's geographically assigned school differs across groups and compare the actual peer composition in neighborhood schools to what the peer composition in those schools would be under a counterfactual scenario in which all students attend their geographically assigned schools. We find that many advantaged students have used school choice programs in Durham to opt out of assigned schools with concentrations of disadvantaged students and to attend schools with higher achieving students. Comparisons of actual peer compositions with the counterfactual scenario indicate only small differences in peer composition for nonchoosers on average. More substantial differences in peer environment emerge, however, for students in schools with concentrations of disadvantaged students and schools located near choice schools attractive to high achievers. The results suggest that expansions of parental choice may have significant adverse effects on the peer environments of a particularly vulnerable group of students. Comparative studies of social responsiveness, a core impairment in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), will enhance our understanding of typical and atypical social behavior. We previously reported a quantitative, cross-species (human-chimpanzee) social responsiveness measure, which included the development of the Chimpanzee Social Responsiveness Scale (CSRS). Here, we augment our prior CSRS sample with 25 zoo chimpanzees at three sites: combined N = 54. The CSRS demonstrated strong interrater reliability, and low-ranked chimpanzees, on average, displayed higher CSRS scores. The CSRS continues to discriminate variation in chimpanzee social responsiveness, and the association of higher scores with lower chimpanzee social standing has implications for the relationship between autistic traits and human social status. Examined the Success for All Program's effects on elementary students' reading achievement. A comparison between two SFA schools and two matched-control schools showed that African-American students in SFA schools performed comparably to their White counterparts in all four schools and significantly outperformed noncontrol minority students.
