This work addresses the intrinsic relationship between trees and networks (i.e. graphs). A complete (invertible) mapping is presented which allows trees to be mapped into weighted graphs and then backmapped into the original tree without loss of information. The extension of this methodology to more general networks, including unweighted structures, is also discussed and illustrated. It is shown that the identified duality between trees and graphs underlies several key concepts and issues of current interest in complex networks, including comprehensive characterization of trees and community detection. For instance, additional information about tree structures (e.g. phylogenetic trees) can be immediately obtained by taking into account several off-the-shelf network measurements -- such as the clustering coefficient, degree correlations and betweenness centrality. At the same time, the hierarchical structure of networks, including the respective communities, becomes clear when the network is represented in terms of the respective tree. The success of new scientific areas can be assessed by their potential for contributing to new theoretical approaches and in applications to real-world problems. Complex networks have fared extremely well in both of these aspects, with their sound theoretical basis developed over the years and with a variety of applications. In this survey, we analyze the applications of complex networks to real-world problems and data, with emphasis in representation, analysis and modeling, after an introduction to the main concepts and models. The comprehensive characterization of the structure of complex networks is essential to understand the dynamical processes which guide their evolution. The discovery of the scale-free distribution and the small world property of real networks were fundamental to stimulate more realistic models and to understand some dynamical processes such as network growth. However, properties related to the network borders (nodes with degree equal to one), one of its most fragile parts, remain little investigated and understood. The border nodes may be involved in the evolution of structures such as geographical networks. Here we analyze complex networks by looking for border trees, which are defined as the subgraphs without cycles connected to the remainder of the network (containing cycles) and terminating into border nodes. In addition to describing an algorithm for identification of such tree subgraphs, we also consider a series of their measurements, including their number of vertices, number of leaves, and depth. Great part of the interest in complex networks has been motivated by the presence of structured, frequently non-uniform, connectivity. Because diverse connectivity patterns tend to result in distinct network dynamics, and also because they provide the means to identify and classify several types of complex networks, it becomes important to obtain meaningful measurements of the local network topology. In addition to traditional features such as the node degree, clustering coefficient and shortest path, motifs have been introduced in the literature in order to provide complementary description of the networks connectivity. The current work proposes a new type of motifs, namely chains of nodes, namely sequences of connected nodes with degree two. These chains have been subdivided into cords, tails, rings and handles, depending on the type of their extremities (e.g. open or connected). A theoretical analysis of the density of such motifs in random and scale free networks is described, and an algorithm for identifying those motifs in general networks is presented. The potential of considering chains for network characterization has been illustrated with respect to five categories of real-world networks including 16 cases. Several interesting findings were obtained, including the fact that several chains were observed in the real-world networks, especially the WWW, books, and power-grid. Complex networks can be understood as graphs whose connectivity deviates from those of regular or near-regular graphs, which are understood as being `simple'. While a great deal of the attention so far dedicated to complex networks has been duly driven by the `complex' nature of these structures, in this work we address the identification of simplicity, in the sense of regularity, in complex networks. The basic idea is to seek for subgraphs exhibiting small dispersion (e.g. standard deviation or entropy) of local measurements such as the node degree and clustering coefficient. This approach paves the way for the identification of subgraphs (patches) with nearly uniform connectivity, therefore complementing the characterization of the complexity of networks. We also performed analysis of cascade failures, revealing that the removal of vertices in `simple' regions results in smaller damage to the network structure than the removal of vertices in the heterogeneous regions. We illustrate the potential of the proposed methodology with respect to four theoretical models as well as protein-protein interaction networks of three different species. Our results suggest that the simplicity of protein interaction grows as the result of natural selection. Even more interesting than the intricate organization of complex networks are the dynamical behavior of systems which such structures underly. Among the many types of dynamics, one particularly interesting category involves the evolution of trails left by moving agents progressing through random walks and dilating processes in a complex network. The emergence of trails is present in many dynamical process, such as pedestrian traffic, information flow and metabolic pathways. Important problems related with trails include the reconstruction of the trail and the identification of its source, when complete knowledge of the trail is missing. In addition, the following of trails in multi-agent systems represent a particularly interesting situation related to pedestrian dynamics and swarming intelligence. The present work addresses these three issues while taking into account permanent and transient marks left in the visited nodes. Different topologies are considered for trail reconstruction and trail source identification, including four complex networks models and four real networks, namely the Internet, the US airlines network, an email network and the scientific collaboration network of complex network researchers. Protein-protein interactions can be properly modeled as scale-free complex networks, while the lethality of proteins has been correlated with the node degrees, therefore defining a lethality-centrality rule. In this work we revisit this relevant problem by focusing attention not on proteins as a whole, but on their functional domains, which are ultimately responsible for their binding potential. Four networks are considered: the original protein-protein interaction network, its randomized version, and two domain networks assuming different lethality hypotheses. By using formal statistical analysis, we show that the correlation between connectivity and essentiality is higher for domains than for proteins., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. A new method for community identification is proposed which is founded on the analysis of successive neighborhoods, reached through hierarchical growth from a starting vertex, and on the definition of communities as a subgraph whose number of inner connections is larger than outer connections. In order to determine the precision and speed of the method, it is compared with one of the most popular community identification approaches, namely Girvan and Newman's algorithm. Although the hierarchical growth method is not as precise as Girvan and Newman's method, it is potentially faster than most community finding algorithms., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The Sznajd model has been largely applied to simulate many sociophysical phenomena. In this paper we applied the Sznajd model with more than two opinions on three different network topologies and observed the evolution of surviving opinions after many interactions among the nodes. As result, we obtained a scaling law which depends of the network size and the number of possible opinions. We also observed that this scaling law is not the same for all network topologies, being quite similar between scale-free networks and Sznajd networks but different for random networks., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Each complex network (or class of networks) presents specific topological features which characterize its connectivity and highly influence the dynamics of processes executed on the network. The analysis, discrimination, and synthesis of complex networks therefore rely on the use of measurements capable of expressing the most relevant topological features. This article presents a survey of such measurements. It includes general considerations about complex network characterization, a brief review of the principal models, and the presentation of the main existing measurements. Important related issues covered in this work comprise the representation of the evolution of complex networks in terms of trajectories in several measurement spaces, the analysis of the correlations between some of the most traditional measurements, perturbation analysis, as well as the use of multivariate statistics for feature selection and network classification. Depending on the network and the analysis task one has in mind, a specific set of features may be chosen.
