Backgroundcardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome is a rare genetic disorder affecting less than 900 people in the world. It is mainly characterized by craniofacial, dermatologic and cardiac defects, but also gastroenterological symptoms may be present, ranging from feeding difficulties to gastroesophageal reflux and constipation.In this report we describe a case of this syndrome characterized by severe feeding and growth difficulties, with a particular focus on the management of gastroenterological complications.Case presentationthe patient was a caucasian male affected by Cardio-Facio-Cutaneous syndrome who presented feeding difficulties already a few hours after birth. These symptoms worsened in the following months and lead to a complete growth arrest and malnutrition. He was first treated with a nasogastric tube placement. Subsequently, a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication and a laparoscopic Stamm gastrostomy were performed. The child was fed with nocturnal enteral nutrition and diurnal oral and enteral nutrition. Eventually the patient resumed feeding validly and regained adequate growth.Conclusionthis paper aims to bring to light a complex rare syndrome that infrequently comes to the attention of the pediatricians and whose diagnosis is not always straightforward. We also highlight the possible complications under a gastroenterologic point of view. Our contribution can be helpful to the pediatrician in the first diagnostic suspect of this syndrome. In particular, it is worth highlighting that -in an infant with Noonan-like features- symptoms like suction or swallowing problems, vomiting and feeding difficulties should orient towards the diagnosis of a Cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome. It is also important to stress that its related gastroenterological issues may lead to severe growth failure and therefore the role of the gastroenterologist is key to manage supplemental feeding and to establish whether a nasogastric or gastrostomic tube placement is necessary.

Introduction Major Depressive Disorder is a frequent and disabling condition. More than 20% of patients do not respond to pharmacotherapy alone, so there is the need to find alternative strategies in order to potentiate the drugs. Therapeutic alternatives include repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), which has shown an antidepressant effect in the last decades. Objectives Comparison of the efficacy of accelerated repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (aTMS) treatment (4 sessions/day for 5 days) with the standard rTMS protocol treatment (1 session/day for 4 weeks), using the FDA-approved parameters. Methods 33 patients affected by Major Depressive Episodes treated with either Fluvoxamine or Venlafaxine were enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned to the two protocol groups: standard rTMS protocol (15 patients) and aTMS protocol (18 patients). In the standard protocol, patients received 1 rTMS session/day for 4 weeks, while in the aTMS protocol they received 4 rTMS sessions/day for 5 days. Symptomatological improvement was evaluated through MADRS, BDI-II and SSI rating scales administered on day: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 14, 21, 28, 56. The study is single-blind, since the clinical rater was unaware of the treatment protocol group. Response and remission rates were calculated, defined respectively as a reduction ≥50% in the MADRS score and a MADRS score

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare and severe neurological disorder mainly affecting females, usually linked to methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene mutations. Manifestations of RTT typically include loss of purposeful hand skills, gait and motor abnormalities, loss of spoken language, stereotypic hand movements, epilepsy, and autonomic dysfunction. Patients with RTT have a higher incidence of sudden death than the general population. Literature data indicate an uncoupling between measures of breathing and heart rate control that could offer insight into the mechanisms that lead to greater vulnerability to sudden death. Understanding the neural mechanisms of autonomic dysfunction and its correlation with sudden death is essential for patient care. Experimental evidence for increased sympathetic or reduced vagal modulation to the heart has spurred efforts to develop quantitative markers of cardiac autonomic profile. Heart rate variability (HRV) has emerged as a valuable non-invasive test to estimate the modulation of sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to the heart. This review aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge on autonomic dysfunction and, in particular, to assess whether HRV parameters can help unravel patterns of cardiac autonomic dysregulation in patients with RTT. Literature data show reduced global HRV (total spectral power and R-R mean) and a shifted sympatho-vagal balance toward sympathetic predominance and vagal withdrawal in patients with RTT compared to controls. In addition, correlations between HRV and genotype and phenotype features or neurochemical changes were investigated. The data reported in this review suggest an important impairment in sympatho-vagal balance, supporting possible future research scenarios, targeting ANS.

IntroductionLongline fishing gear has a higher by-catch rate than any other type of commercial fishing gear. Nowadays, there is an urgent need to find efficient management strategies to mitigate by-catch and the use of new hook types could be one of them. This study investigates the effects of a longline fishery (which targets swordfish, Xiphias gladius, in the South Adriatic Sea) replacing the traditional J-type hook with a circle hook (C-type hook) on target and by-catch species.MethodsFor this purpose, a fishing trip of nine days – with seven fishing sets – was monitored. For both targeted swordfish and by-catch specimens caught (i.e., blue shark, Prionace glauca; pelagic stingray, Pteroplatytrygon violacea; and loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta), data about the hook type used (J-type vs. C-type), the specimen size, and their capture condition were collected.Results and discussionWith all species, we observed no significant difference in catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) or specimen lengths between the two hook types. In addition, the hook type did not significantly affect the capture condition of swordfish, pelagic stingray, or loggerhead turtle specimens; however, it significantly affected the capture condition of blue sharks. The percentage of blue shark specimens found in healthy condition was higher when using a C-type hook (71.5%) than when using a J-type hook (22.6%). Overall, these preliminary results suggest that the use of a C-type hook improves the condition of by-caught blue sharks without affecting the CPUE or size of the target species. In conclusion, the use of a C-type hook could reduce the detrimental effects of by-catch on some species in the Adriatic Sea; however, this finding needs to be confirmed by a study with a larger sample size.

Há um grande interesse por parte das organizações pela adoção de práticas sustentáveis, visando melhorar o desempenho de suas cadeias de suprimentos. Regulamentos ambientais, consumo de recursos e descarte de resíduos são alguns dos fatores que podem influenciar na tomada de decisão quanto a contratação de fornecedores verdes. Este estudo ilustra o caso de um fabricante de implementos agrícolas do setor metal mecânico que busca implementar o gerenciamento da cadeia de suprimentos verdes (GSCM) e selecionar um fornecedor que atenda aos requisitos ambientais determinados. Portanto, o objetivo desta pesquisa consiste em avaliar o desempenho ambiental de três potenciais fornecedores por meio do método de tomada de decisão multicritério fuzzy TOPSIS e selecionar a melhor alternativa. Além disso, é realizada uma análise de sensibilidade para comprovar a robustez do método utilizado. O resultado mostra que o fornecedor A3 ocupa o primeiro lugar entre os três fornecedores avaliados, demonstrando um forte desempenho ambiental, sobretudo, em quatro critérios: parceiros ambientais, imagem verde, reciclagem e descarte de resíduos.

Ergology was originated in the 1980 ́s as an approach focused on understanding human activity and work based on the worker ́s knowledge and experience. The overall objective was to conduct bibliographic research in scientific databases on the ergonomic approach in Brazil from 1980 to 2018. The specific objectives were: to describe the profile of scientific productions of empirical studies within the Brazilian context based on Ergology; to identify and organize the main results of research in Brazil that used the ergologic approach. The methodology consists of a literature review study ofempirical articles published between 1980 to 2018 in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) databases. Forty-five articles were selected, most of which based on qualitative methods and share efforts showing promising results for the understanding of the relationship between subjectivity and work, revealing how workers from different professional categories related singularly to their work activities. The diversity of experiences presented shows that the ergologicalapproach is consolidated amongBrazilian researchers as a method widely used by research centers and groups from different institutions.

In vitro oxygen release from cOLNDs was measured through an oximeter. ND biocompatibility and ability to promote wound healing in human normoxic/hypoxic skin cells were challenged by LDH and MTT assays using keratinocytes. ND antimicrobial activity was investigated by monitoring upon incubation with/without MW or LW cOLNDs/cOFNDs either bacteria or yeast growth over time. The mechanical interaction between NDs and microorganisms was also assessed by confocal microscopy.Results: LW cNDs appeared less toxic to keratinocytes than MW cNDs. Based on cell counts, either MW or LW cOLNDs and cOFNDs displayed long-term antimicrobial efficacy against S. pyogenes, C. albicans, and C. glabrata (up to 24 h), whereas a short-term cytostatic effects against MRSA (up to 6 h) was revealed. The internalization of all ND formulations by all four microorganisms, already after 3 h of incubation, was showed, with the only exception to MW cOLNDs/cOFNDs that adhered to MRSA walls without being internalized even after 24 h.Conclusion: cNDs exerted bacteriostatic and fungistatic effects, due to the presence of chitosan in the outer shell and independently of oxygen addition in the inner core. The duration of such effects strictly depends on the characteristics of each microbial species, and not on the molecular weight of chitosan in ND shells. However, LW chitosan was better tolerated by human keratinocytes than MW. Minimally invasive injectable dermal fillers are one of the most commonly used aesthetic treatments for facial soft tissue restoration. Different formulations may be used simultaneously to target multiple areas of concern. Due to differences in their rheological properties that directly impact the recommended injection technique and overall result, the formulations in the Aliaxin® line are each designed to target different soft facial tissues. This case series addresses two potential treatment approaches and a combination approach specifically developed to achieve harmony and promote a full but soft facial appearance. To reach this goal, we used two different formulations: Aliaxin® Shape and Restore (ASR) and Aliaxin® Global Performance (AGP). Four patients, 35-55 years received treatments with ASR, AGP, or both products. Utilizing the two protocols simultaneously achieved targeted support, lift, and volume, along with effective full facial softening and an authentic aesthetic outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Continence issues due to organic causes including previous colorectal surgery or neurological issues might benefit from Transanal irrigation (TAI) that proved to be highly effective but with a number of limitations including a relatively high discontinuation rates. Our study was aimed at evaluating the efficacy of an advanced protocol tailored to each patient to prevent dropout and increase satisfaction, independence, and quality of life. This was a prospective, interventional, multicenter, nonrandomized study involving children aged 4–18 years with bowel dysfunction unresponsive to conventional treatments who required TAI. TAI was performed in accordance to the best standards of care with a total irrigation volume that was determined based on low emission X-Ray barium enemas performed at the very beginning of the study. All patients underwent training and assessments of continence, patients' perspectives and quality of life were performed at different timepoints from enrollment (T0) up to 6 months since TAI was introduced (T3). A total of 78 patients were enrolled. Male to female ratio was 1.4:1. Mean age at enrollment was 106.1 ± 42.8 months. Discontinuation was reported by 3 patients (3.8 %). Continence, satisfaction and a number of other outcome measures increased from baseline (T0) to the last visit (T3). In particular, mean Rintala total score increased linearly from 7.8 to 14.8 during the study period (T0 to T3 timepoints). On a multivariate analysis, the only parameter that proved to be inversely associated with continence as well as with other outcome measures was the use of laxatives at enrollment and during the study. This study has demonstrated the high efficacy of this innovative patient-tailored TAI protocol across all assessed scores. Of note, given the negative impact of laxatives, our findings suggest limiting their use in this patient population to further increase the efficacy of the procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) is a specialized spectroscopic technique based on the enhancement of the Raman scattering signals of molecules adsorbed or in close proximity to certain rough or nanostructured metal surfaces. It’s an extremely sensitive and powerful analytical tool for the investigation of biological molecules, revolutionizing the field of bioanalytical chemistry. The enhancement of Raman signal is due to various effects, the most important is thought to be the interaction between the electromagnetic wave associated with the laser used and the rough metal substrate (i.e., silver/copper/gold surfaces) on which the molecule is placed. When substrates are used, their characteristics are crucial for the reliability and sensitivity of experiments, as well as the ease of reproducibility of measurements. In the present work, we report on preliminary measurements to investigate the characteristics of two commercial SERS substrates, which have different nanostructures and patterns, properly designed to operate at an excitation wavelength of 785 nm. Aspirin C was used as a representative molecule to evaluate their application for SERS study of biological molecules, thanks to its characteristic fingerprint. Aspirin C is commercially available in the form of effervescent tablets, with acetylsalicylic acid and ascorbic acid as active principles with mainly analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The results are discussed also considering future applications for the detection of analytes of environmental interest.

With the recent advancements in the field of diffusion generative models, it has been shown that defining the generative process in the latent space of a powerful pretrained autoencoder can offer substantial advantages. This approach, by abstracting away imperceptible image details and introducing substantial spatial compression, renders the learning of the generative process more manageable while significantly reducing computational and memory demands. In this work, we propose to replace autoencoder coding with a model-based coding scheme based on traditional lossy image compression techniques; this choice not only further diminishes computational expenses but also allows us to probe the boundaries of latent-space image generation. Our objectives culminate in the proposal of a valuable approximation for training continuous diffusion models within a discrete space, accompanied by enhancements to the generative model for categorical values. Beyond the good results obtained for the problem at hand, we believe that the proposed work holds promise for enhancing the adaptability of generative diffusion models across diverse data types beyond the realm of imagery.

Urban industrial areas are often a matter of concern due to the emission of air pollutants that may affect the air quality of adjacent cities. Aerosol pollutants are monitored by governmental agencies that employ regulatory monitoring stations which are very accurate, but also very expensive, bulky, and demanding in terms of maintenance. For this reason, it often happens that the monitoring of the air quality in large areas is covered by few stations. This situation can lead to the building of air pollutant maps with low spatio-temporal resolution. An appealing way to address this issue is represented by low-cost miniaturized gas sensors (LCSs) employed in low-cost air quality monitors (LCMs). Despite the various and unquestionable points of strength characterizing these devices, the scientific community has raised several warnings about the accuracy of their measurements and issued many caveats regarding their use. In this study, a new LCM model designed and implemented in our laboratories was used to measure the NO2 and PM concentrations in the industrial area of Brindisi (Italy). Data gathered by the LCM were compared with reference instrumentations for a rigorous analysis of the performance achievable through these low-cost technologies in this particular case.

Air pollution is a current problem for the environment and public health. Its impact needs to be monitored in urban agglomerates and critical hot spots such as airports. Green aviation with low air emissions is a sustainable goal for the future. The air pollutants are monitored by governmental agencies that employ regulatory monitoring stations, which are very accurate but also very expensive, bulky, and maintenance demands. On the contrary, low-cost sensor systems can offer a proper solution to cover large areas at high spatial-temporal resolution. However, the low-cost air quality sensors are less accurate than reference analyzers operating in the regulatory stations. To enhance the sensor accuracy, field calibration, and data correction with reference instrumentation is a valid strategy to improve sensor data quality. In this study, a sensor system with a selected set of air quality gas sensors (NO2, O3) and particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) has been developed and deployed in a near-city space-airport at Grottaglie (Southern Italy) to perform measurements in a period of 4 months, from October 2021 to February 2022. The sensor units installed in the Airbox system used for this measurements campaign are the GS+4NO2 (DD Scientific) for NO2 measurements, the O3-3E1F (City Technology, Sensoric) for O3 measurements, and the NextPM (Tera Sensor) for PM10 and PM2.5 measurements. Data gathered by the low-cost air quality sensors have been compared to reference instrumentations both co-located (ca. 1 m distance) together with low-cost sensors (PM10, R2 > 0.87; PM2.5, R2 > 0.50) and a distributed regulatory network of 14 environmental stations operating in the local area around space-airport at a distance ranging from 3 to 26 km.

The air quality in modern cities and urban areas is strongly affected by chemical pollutants such as toxic gases, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter. They are monitored by governmental agencies using regulatory monitoring stations, which are highly accurate, but also very expensive, bulky, and maintenance demanding. There is a compulsory need to monitor air quality at high spatial–temporal resolution in smart cities for public health protection and environmental sustainability. Properly calibrated low-cost and low-accuracy sensors are usually deployed in stationary and mobile nodes for urban air quality monitoring. A simple indicator of the current status of urban air pollution is the Air Quality Index (AQI) used to communicate the pollution level under the time-changing trend of a specific pollutant. In this study, continuous measurements have been performed in the city of Bari (southern Italy) by electrochemical gas sensors (NO2, O3, CO), optical particle counters (OPC) for particulate matter (PM10), and NDIR infrared sensors (CO2), including microsensors for temperature and relative humidity. The sensors have been installed in stationary nodes located in urban sites and in a mobile node mounted on a public bus moving on urban routes. AQI data gathered by the low-cost sensors have been compared with reference instrumentations as a case study of citizen science.

In this new study the Authors demonstrated that the IGFBP3/TMEM219 pathway is a physiological regulator of pancreatic beta cell homeostasis and it is dysregulated in diabetes. IGFBP3/TMEM219 targeting may therefore serve as a therapeutic option in diabetes.

Abstract Background From the initial stages of the pandemic in early 2020, COVID-19-related olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions have been widely reported and are emerging as one of the most frequent long-term sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, data regarding the long-term recovery of the sense of smell and taste are lacking. This study aimed to characterize the evolution up to one year after the diagnosis of self-reported olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions in COVID-19 cases. Methods Based on the data of the active surveillance platform of the Apulia region, Italy, we selected the residents of Foggia district who were confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 from March 1st to June 16th, 2020, and home-quarantined with paucisymptomatic-to-mild clinical presentation. Self-reported olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions were recorded at baseline through a survey of dichotomous questions. The evolution of these symptoms at approximately one year was prospectively assessed via telephone by the validated sino-nasal outcome test 22 (SNOT-22, Italian version). Results Among the 1,175 COVID-19 cases notified in the Foggia district during the first epidemic wave, 488 had paucisymptomatic-to-mild clinical presentation. Of these, 41.2% (n = 201, 95% confidence interval [CI] 36.8–45.7%) reported at least one sensory dysfunction. A total of 178 to 201 (88.5%) patients agreed to participate in the follow-up survey. According to the SNOT-22 results, the persistence of a sensory dysfunction was observed in the 29.8% (n = 53, 95% CI 23.2–37.1%) of them. Particularly, loss of smell persisted in 25.8% (n = 46, 95% CI 19.6–32.9%), loss of taste in 21.3% (n = 38, 95% CI 15.6–28.1%), loss of both in 17.4% (n = 31, 95% CI 12.2–23.8%) of participants in the follow-up. The rates of full recovery increased over time: from 59% at 30 days to 71.9% at 90 days for the sense of smell; from 61.3% at 30 days to 74.7% at 90 days for the sense of taste. Conclusions The persistence of COVID-19-related olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions up to 12 months after the disease onset in a noteworthy proportion (approximately 3 out of 10) of patients with paucisymptomatic-to-mild clinical presentation deserves further investigations due to its possible pathophysiological implications and impact on the quality of life.

Surface states, and the combination of suitable materials, induce spatial gradients in the carrier density of doped metal oxide nanocrystals, affecting their electronic structure and plasmonic behavior. Here the authors demonstrate depletion layer engineering and control in ITO/In2O3 core–shell nanocrystals by tuning the shell thickness or by photodoping.

Chronic wounds (CWs) are typically characterized by persistent hypoxia, exacerbated inflammation, and impaired skin tissue remodeling. Additionally, CWs are often worsened by microbial infections. Oxygen-loaded nanobubbles (OLNBs), displaying a peculiar structure based on oxygen-solving perfluorocarbons such as perfluoropentane in the inner core and polysaccharydes including chitosan in the outer shell, have proven effective in delivering oxygen to hypoxic tissues. Antimicrobial properties have been largely reported for chitosan. In the present work chitosan/perfluoropentane OLNBs were challenged for biocompatibility with human skin cells and ability to promote wound healing processes, as well as for their antimicrobial properties against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Candida albicans. After cellular internalization, OLNBs were not toxic to human keratinocytes (HaCaT), whereas oxygen-free NBs (OFNBs) slightly affected their viability. Hypoxia-dependent inhibition of keratinocyte migratory ability after scratch was fully reversed by OLNBs, but not OFNBs. Both OLNBs and OFNBs exerted chitosan-induced short-term bacteriostatic activity against MRSA (up to 6 h) and long-term fungistatic activity against C. albicans (up to 24 h). Short-term antibacterial activity associated with NB prolonged adhesion to MRSA cell wall (up to 24 h) while long-term antifungal activity followed NB early internalization by C. albicans (already after 3 h of incubation). Taken altogether, these data support chitosan-shelled and perfluoropentane-cored OLNB potential as innovative, promising, non-toxic, and cost-effective antimicrobial devices promoting repair processes to be used for treatment of MRSA- and C. albicans-infected CWs.

BackgroundLeft-sided breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant radiotherapy are at risk for coronary artery disease, and/or radiation mediated effects on the microvasculature. Previously our laboratory demonstrated in canines with hybrid 18FDG/PET a progressive global inflammatory response during the initial one year following treatment. In this study, the objective is to evaluate corresponding changes in perfusion, in the same cohort, where resting myocardial blood flow (MBF) was quantitatively measured.MethodIn five canines, Ammonia PET (13NH3) derived MBF was measured at baseline, 1-week, 1, 3, 6 and 12-months after cardiac external beam irradiation. MBF measurements were correlated with concurrent 18FDG uptake. Simultaneously MBF was measured using the dual bolus MRI method.ResultsMBF was significantly increased at all time points, in comparison to baseline, except at 3-months. This was seen globally throughout the entire myocardium independent of the coronary artery territories. MBF showed a modest significant correlation with 18FDG activity for the entire myocardium (r = 0.51, p = 0.005) including the LAD (r = 0.49, p = 0.008) and LCX (r = 0.47, p = 0.013) coronary artery territories.ConclusionIn this canine model of radiotherapy for left-sided breast cancer, resting MBF increases as early as 1-week and persists for up to one year except at 3-months. This pattern is similar to that of 18FDG uptake. A possible interpretation is that the increase in resting MBF is a response to myocardial inflammation.

During COVID-19 vaccination campaign, possible ChAdOx1-S-associated risks of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome led to implement ChAdOx1-S/BNT162b2 heterologous vaccination, despite the limited information on its reactogenicity and safety. We conducted a prospective observational post-marketing surveillance study to assess the safety of this heterologous schedule. Abstract 2D metal monochalcogenides have recently attracted interest for photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications in aqueous electrolytes. Their optical bandgap in the visible and near‐infrared spectral region is adequate for energy conversion and photodetection/sensing. Their large surface‐to‐volume ratio guarantees that the charge carriers are photogenerated at the material/electrolyte interface, where redox reactions occur, minimizing recombination processes. However, solution‐processed photoelectrodes based on these materials exhibit energy conversion efficiencies that are far from the current state of the art expressed by established technologies. This work reports a systematic morphological, spectroscopic, and PEC characterization of solution‐processed films of photoactive InSe flakes for PEC‐type photodetectors. By optimizing the thickness and hybridizing InSe flakes with electrically conductive Sn:In2O3 (ITO) nanocrystals, photoanodes with a significant photoanodic response in both acidic and alkaline media are designed, reaching responsivity up to 60.0 mA W−1 (external quantum efficiency = 16.4%) at +0.4 V versus RHE under visible illumination. In addition, a strategy based on the use of sacrificial agents (i.e., 2‐propanol and Na2SO3) is proposed to improve the stability of the InSe and ITO/InSe photodetectors. Our data confirm the potential of 2D InSe for PEC energy conversion and sensing applications, remarking the challenges related to InSe stability during anodic operation.

BackgroundFunctional tics are included in the wide spectrum of functional movement disorders (FMDs). Their distinction from organic tics is challenging because they both phenomenologically present common features. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in functional tic-like behaviours in vulnerable children and adolescents after social media exposure. This study explores the phenomenology and course of a cohort of newly diagnosed functional tic-like behaviors.MethodsWe analysed clinical data of 243 patients affected by tic disorders collected at outpatient Tourette Clinic, Child and Adolescent Neurology and Psychiatry Unit, Catania University. Among the clinical cohort with functional tic-like behaviors, we evaluated the clinical course of symptoms at follow-up visits after 6 and 12 months.ResultsAmong the cohort of 243 patients referred for evaluation at our centre, 11 were diagnosed with functional tic–like behaviours. The majority of participants with functional tic–like behaviours were female with a mean age of 15 years old and presented an explosive symptom's onset. At follow-up visit after 12 months, patients with functional tic-like behaviors showed a significant variation in the severity of tics and anxiety symptoms. Conversely, depressive, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms did not significantly differ during the follow-up.ConclusionOur data suggest that several characteristics in clinical course and their phenomenology can help clinicians to distinguish functional tic–like behaviours from organic tics. Our results also suggest a better outcome for tics and anxiety symptoms respect on other comorbidities. A prompt diagnosis and management not only of tics but also comorbidities are recommended, as generally conventional pharmacotherapy for tics does not have positive effects on these patients.

Oxytocin (OT) is a neurohormone involved early in neurodevelopment and is implicated in multiple functions, including sensory modulation. Evidence of such modulation has been observed for different sensory modalities in both healthy and pathological conditions. This review summarizes the pleiotropic modulation that OT can exercise on an often overlooked sensory system: thermosensation. This system allows us to sense temperature variations and compensate for the variation to maintain a stable core body temperature. Oxytocin modulates autonomic and behavioral mechanisms underlying thermoregulation at both central and peripheral levels. Hyposensitivity or hypersensitivity for different sensory modalities, including thermosensitivity, is a common feature in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), recapitulated in several ASD mouse models. These sensory dysregulations occur early in post-natal development and are correlated with dysregulation of the oxytocinergic system. In this study, we discussed the potential link between thermosensory atypia and the dysregulation of the oxytocinergic system in ASD.

Priming has been a powerful tool for the study of human memory and especially the memory representations relevant for language. However, although it is well established that lexical access can be primed, we do not know exactly what types of computations can be primed above the word level. This work took a neurobiological approach and assessed the ways in which the complex representation of a minimal combinatory phrase, such as red boat, can be primed, as evidenced by the spatiotemporal profiles of magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals. Specifically, we built upon recent progress on the neural signatures of phrasal composition and tested whether the brain activities implicated for the basic combination of two words could be primed. In two experiments, MEG was recorded during a picture naming task where the prime trials were designed to replicate previously reported combinatory effects and the target trials to test whether those combinatory effects could be primed. The manipulation of the primes was successful in eliciting larger activity for adjective-noun combinations than single nouns in left anterior temporal and ventromedial prefrontal cortices, replicating prior MEG studies on parallel contrasts. Priming of similarly timed activity was observed during target trials in anterior temporal cortex, but only when the prime and target shared an adjective. No priming in temporal cortex was observed for single word repetition and two control tasks showed that the priming effect was not elicited if the prime pictures were simply viewed but not named. In sum, this work provides evidence that very basic combinatory operations can be primed, with the necessity for some lexical overlap between prime and target suggesting combinatory conceptual, as opposed to syntactic processing. Both our combinatory and priming effects were early, onsetting between 100 and 150ms after picture onset and thus are likely to reflect the very earliest planning stages of a combinatory message. Thus our findings suggest that at the earliest stages of combinatory planning in production, a combinatory memory representation is formed that affects the planning of a relevantly similar combination on a subsequent trial.

En la presente investigación se evaluó un sistema de filtración lenta en medio granular utilizando sustratos adsorbentes preparados a partir de materiales litológicos oxídicos de dos localidades andinas identificadas como G y V, que fueron caracterizados químicamente. Se prepararon filtros monocapa y bicapa con lechos tubulares de 5 y 8 mm de longitud como sistema de tratamiento de agua residual con turbidez de 76 UNT, DBO 230 mg/L y DQO 445 mg/L. Se analizó la turbidez, el pH y la conductividad eléctrica en alícuotas de 100 mL del percolado hasta la saturación del lecho filtrante. Los resultados muestran que los materiales estudiados depuran el agua residual a través de un proceso de filtración y adsorción, al emplear un filtro bicapa estructurado con el material G se obtuvo una remoción de la turbidez residual en 61 %. Adicionalmente, se logró la reducción del 97.4 de la DBO y 94 % de la DQO, en contraste con el 86 % obtenido con el filtro de arena convencional de tres capas. Los resultados demuestran la potencialidad del uso de estos medios granulares para la depuración de aguas residuales y efluentes como sistemas filtrantes alternativos, ecológicos y de bajo costo.
