A new series of oligothiophenes bearing electron deficient fluorene units have been prepared and characterised. The materials are functionalised by C8/C11 alkyl chains or triethylene glycol side groups, yet the higher oligomers remain poorly soluble. The absorption characteristics of a sexithiophene analogue (compound 3) have been studied by UV-vis and photoinduced absorption spectroscopy. Photovoltaic cells have been fabricated from blends of 3 and fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). The photocurrent spectrum of the device matches the absorption spectrum of the sexithiophene system which incorporates an intramolecular charge transfer band arising from the 1,3-dithiole-fluorene units. The first synthesis of the selenium analogue of EDOT, together with its electrochemical polymerization and redox and electronic properties of the resulting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenediselena)thiophene (PEDST), is reported. The HOMO and LUMO values for the polymer (calculated from cyclic voltammetry experiments) are −4.8 and −3.3 eV, respectively, whereas the experimental band gap is 1.55 eV. Within the related series of polymersPEDOT, PEDTT, and PEDSTthe selenium analogue has a significantly lower LUMO value than the oxygen or sulfur derivatives (by ca.0.55 eV). Quantum chemical calculations on trimers ((EDXT)3, where X O, S, or Se) show that the most planar conformation within the conjugated chain is achieved by EDOT systems. However, the calculated energy of a fixed planar conformation for PEDST is 13.9 kJ mol-1lower than the corresponding unconstrained conformer, indicating that a planar structure is preferred; this data corroborates the lower experimental band gap observed for PEDST (1.55 eV) compared to PEDTT (2.19 eV). The synthesis and electropolymerisation of a new terthiophene, 1,3-di-2-thienylthieno[3′,4′:5,6][1,4]dithiino[2,3-b]quinoxaline, is reported. The compound bears a quinoxaline unit fused to the central thiophene ring via a 1,4-dithiin ring; the latter unit ensures a non-planar structure for the molecule. The corresponding polymer, prepared electrochemically, has been characterized by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry. The material is oxidised within the conjugated chain, but the reduction processes are complex and arise from both the polythiophene and the independent quinoxaline units. The polymer has two distinct colour states—orange in the neutral form and green–blue in the oxidised state. Electrochromic studies on poly(1,3-di-2-thienylthieno[3′,4′:5,6][1,4]dithiino[2,3-b]quinoxaline) reveal fast switching speeds that are superior to those of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and a colouration efficiency of 381 cm2 C−1 at 650 nm. A novel polythienylenevinylene (PTV) and two new polythiophenes (PTs), featuring fused tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units, have been prepared and characterized by ultraviolet−visible (UV−vis) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroelectrochemistry. All polymers undergo two sequential, reversible oxidation processes in solution. Structures in which the TTF species is directly linked to the polymer backbone (2 and 4) display redox behavior which is dictated by the fulvalene system. Once the TTF is spatially removed from the polymer chain by a nonconjugated link (polymer 3), the electroactivity of both TTF and polythiophene moieties can be detected. Computational studies confirm the delocalization of charge over both electroactive centers (TTF and PT) and the existence of a triplet dication intermediate. PTV 4 has a low band gap (1.44 eV), is soluble in common organic solvents, and is stable under ambient conditions. Organic solar cells of polymer 4:[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) have been fabricated. Under illumination, a photovoltaic effect is observed with a power conversion efficiency of 0.13% under AM1.5 solar simulated light. The onset of photocurrent at 850 nm is consistent with the onset of the π−π absorption band of the polymer. Remarkably, UV−vis spectroelectrochemistry of polymer 4 reveals that the conjugated polymer chain remains unchanged during the oxidation of the polymer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

White hybrid inorganic/organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated by combining a novel organic colour converter with a blue inorganic LED. An organic small molecule was specifically synthesised to act as down-converter. The characteristics of the white colour were controlled by changing the concentration of the organic molecule based on the BODIPY unit, which was embedded in a transparent matrix, and volume of the molecule and encapsulant mixture. The concentration has a critical effect on the conversion efficiency, i.e. how much of the absorbed blue light is converted into yellow light. With increasing concentration the conversion efficiency decreases. This quenching effect is due to aggregation of the organic molecule at higher concentrations. Increasing the deposited amount of the converter does not increase the yellow emission despite more blue light being absorbed. Degradation of the organic converter was also observed during a period of 15 months from LED fabrication. Angular-dependent measurements revealed slight deviation from a Lambertian profile for the blue and yellow emission peaks leading to a small change in ‘whiteness’ with emission angle. Warm white and cool white light with correlated colour temperatures of 2770 K and 7680 K, respectively, were achieved using different concentrations of the converter molecule. Although further work is needed to improve the lifetime and poor colour rendering, these hybrid LEDs show promising results as an alternative approach for generating white LEDs compared with phosphor-based white LEDs. Photovoltaics (PVs) are a critical technology for curbing growing levels of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and meeting increases in future demand for low-carbon electricity. In order to fulfill ambitions for net-zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO _2 eq) emissions worldwide, the global cumulative capacity of solar PVs must increase by an order of magnitude from 0.9 TW _p in 2021 to 8.5 TW _p by 2050 according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, which is considered to be a highly conservative estimate. In 2020, the Henry Royce Institute brought together the UK PV community to discuss the critical technological and infrastructure challenges that need to be overcome to address the vast challenges in accelerating PV deployment. Herein, we examine the key developments in the global community, especially the progress made in the field since this earlier roadmap, bringing together experts primarily from the UK across the breadth of the PVs community. The focus is both on the challenges in improving the efficiency, stability and levelized cost of electricity of current technologies for utility-scale PVs, as well as the fundamental questions in novel technologies that can have a significant impact on emerging markets, such as indoor PVs, space PVs, and agrivoltaics. We discuss challenges in advanced metrology and computational tools, as well as the growing synergies between PVs and solar fuels, and offer a perspective on the environmental sustainability of the PV industry. Through this roadmap, we emphasize promising pathways forward in both the short- and long-term, and for communities working on technologies across a range of maturity levels to learn from each other.
