We employ the scenario approach to compute probably approximately correct (PAC) bounds on the average inter-sample time (AIST) generated by an unknown PETC system, based on a finite number of samples. We extend the scenario approach to multiclass SVM algorithms in order to construct a PAC map between the concrete, unknown state-space and the inter-sample times. We then build a traffic model applying an $\ell$-complete relation and find, in the underlying graph, the cycles of minimum and maximum average weight: these provide lower and upper bounds on the AIST. Numerical benchmarks show the practical applicability of our method, which is compared against model-based state-of-the-art tools., Comment: 6 pages

In this study we performed a neurochemical characterization of the hypothalamus in the developing alpaca (Vicugna pacos) with the aim of revealing the distributions of immunoreactive (-ir) cells containing parvalbumin (PV), calbindin (CB), calretinin (CR), the somatostatin (SOM), the enzyme aromatase P450 (P450Arom), the estrogen receptor α (ER-α), and estrogen receptor β (ER-β) in embryonal stages, early fetal age, and in the newborn. This analysis has been carried out on embryos at 20, 30, 45 days, fetuses at 90 days, and newborn alpaca. Our immunohistochemical results revealed no cells-ir throughout the embryonic hypothalami of 20, 30, and 45 days. On the fetal stage of 90 days, SOM-ir cells were observed in the lateral hypothalamus and the ventromedial nuclei of the tuberal region. We checked for the presence of P450Arom-ir cells in the periventricular area and dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus of the tuberal region. In these fetal stages, no PV-ir, CB-ir, CR-ir or ERs-ir cells were identified. In the newborn, the PV-ir, CB-ir, CR-ir, and SOM-ir cells were detected in both the anterior and tuberal hypothalamic area. The P450Arom-ir cells the ER-α-ir and ER-β-ir cells were found in the anterior hypothalamus. Our results offer a contribution in the future purpose to obtain a time-expression pattern of the considered markers in alpaca during gestation and represents a foundation for future investigations on the alpaca brain to define the cross talk between PV, CB, CR, P450Arom, SOM, and ERs in the hypothalamus, the strategic region for the control of the reproductive behavior.

- Abstract

Collaboration is a key to success. Nonetheless, collaboration dynamics are affected by partner compatibility, which, in turn, is strongly affected by team member diversity. Studies on team diversity have shown significant variation in the magnitude, significance, and causal direction of the correlations. We examine how international R&D teams collaborate, investigating the impact of team diversity on innovation. We focus on institutional diversity to analyze how, together with the duration of the collaboration, it affects innovation outcomes. We argue that institutional diversity hampers effective knowledge sharing and negatively affects innovation outcomes. However, this negative effect is mitigated by the duration of the R&D collaboration. The longer the diverse actors collaborate, the more likely they are to overcome the barriers of institutional diversity and find effective modes of collaboration for knowledge transfer and innovation. We test our hypotheses in the context of 3658 clinical trial projects conducted between 2001 and 2015.

Purpose This paper aims to analyse the idea that experience acts as an antecedent in divestiture and triggers an organisational learning process that enables the divesting firm to convert experience into knowledge, increasing the probability that a firm will undertake subsequent divestitures. Design/methodology/approach The approach is quantitative. The research project used a case–control design, with a sample consisting of 274 divesting and non-divesting firms. Given the dichotomous nature of the dependent variable, the relations of the research model are tested using logistic regression. Findings The likelihood of a divestiture increases when firms have already had past experience of divestitures. Firm performance and firm size act as moderating variables, that is, the learning effects are weaker in firms with better past performance and also in larger firms. Research limitations/implications The study contributes to the literature on organisational learning and divestiture. In particular, the knowledge obtained from previous divestitures is positively related to subsequent ones. The results on firm size and performance as contingency factors make it possible to distinguish between the different learning mechanisms in proactive and reactive divestitures, as well as in larger and smaller firms. Accordingly, a two-level framework of experience and knowledge is proposed. Practical implications The results are of interest for practitioners who need a better understanding of the antecedents of their strategic actions in terms of past experience and knowledge. The study also offers insights into the knowledge management practices that fit into the proposed two-level framework of knowledge accumulation. Originality/value The originality of the study consists in the strong evidence of learning effects in divestitures that it finds. This study augments a promising line of research on the effect of experience in rare strategic decisions, enriching our understanding of the learning mechanisms associated with complex experiences.

International Monetary System ,Economic policy ,Brazil - Abstract
This dissertation is born out of the premise that the 2008 global financial crisis marked a watershed in the history of the international monetary system (IMS), where emerging market and developing countries (EMDs) would become permanently influential actors. In particular, it looks at the experience of Brazil in this context to evaluate this premise. Drawing on in-depth semi-structured interviews with current and former Brazilian policy-makers, this dissertation aims to explain the impact of external constraints on Brazilian economic policymaking from 1994 to 2014 and their role in determining Brazil’s position in the IMS. The puzzle is that Brazil has remained an unprivileged player in the power structures of the IMS while its economic power and position with regard to debt and trade varied over the period of analysis. For Brazil there was a particular hope that the aftermath of the 2008 crisis had fundamentally changed Brazil’s position in the IMS given the ease with which Brazil traversed the crisis. However, subsequent events have proven this view to be inaccurate, and that while the crisis generated circumstances in which Brazil appeared to have greater influence in the IMS, it did not precipitate any decisive structural change. Whilst Brazil did not change, it was nonetheless able to retain some of the political influence it acquired during the context of the crisis even when its domestic economic performance began to deteriorate substantially and some of the old external constraints re-emerged. The experience of Brazil thus serves to shed light on the understudied role of EMDs in the IMS and helps to better understand which factors can influence a country’s monetary power in a hierarchical system.

Capital market investors have limited information about the motives, exchange terms, and expected outcomes of corporate divestitures. Thus, when a firm announces a divestiture, capital markets may have difficulty distinguishing divestitures that are likely to be beneficial and investment worthy from those that signify hidden problems. Drawing on screening theory, we argue that one way investors might overcome their information disadvantages is to use screens to identify investment-worthy divesting firms. We test this logic using one such screen: change in blockholding equity stakes prior to a divestiture announcement. Data from 858 European Union divestitures occurring in 13 Western European Countries show that investors’ reaction to a divestiture announcement is positively associated with pre-divestiture changes in blockholdings in the divesting firm. Furthermore, investors’ valuations were more positive in higher performing divesting firms that had increases in blockholding equity stakes before the divestiture than those that had reductions in these owners’ equity stakes. The findings extend our understanding of how outsiders, such as investors, navigate incomplete information about divestitures. We describe how our study offers a range of implications for divestiture research.

Management. Industrial management ,HD28-70 - Abstract
Parent companies usually undertake corporate spin-offs to cope with higher competitive environments or when, in high technology industries, the differences between R&D investments and intangible assets are larger. Consistent with the recent “positive view“, spin-offs can be considered as a “proactive strategic choice” to foster innovation, develop new activities, being different from past strategic initiatives and, more generally, not being strictly connected to the corporate strategy of the firm. In order to investigate the relation between divestiture decisions and innovation, we conduct an explorative case study in the pharmaceutical industry to show how spin-offs can help firms to explore new opportunities for innovation, search for new funding and push to create the basis for future development.

This paper focuses on innovation performance and investigates the impact of clusters, or localized networks involving industrial, academic and institutional players, in the pharmaceutical setting; we aim to enrich the line of inquiry into cluster-based innovation by applying a social network analysis (SNA) approach. The cluster concept has been defined in ambiguous ways, corresponding to a large variety of spatial and organizational concrete configurations. By analysing the U.S. pharmaceutical context, we show the structural and nodal network characteristics of the clusters and we shed some light on the “small-world” effects of the structural holes.

This paper accompanies FOSSIL: a software tool for the synthesis of Lyapunov functions and of barrier certificates (or functions) for dynamical systems modelled as differential equations. Lyapunov functions are formal certificates for stability analysis, whereas barrier functions are formal certificates for the safety of dynamical models. FOSSIL is sound and automatic thanks to a counterexample-guided inductive synthesis loop. This method exploits the flexibility of candidate functions generated by training neural network templates, the formal assertions provided by a verifier (namely, an SMT solver), and finally new procedures to ease the exchange of information between the two mentioned components. We endow the tool with features of usability, scalability, and robustness---all of which are showcased on benchmarks.

Background Cornea is a composite tissue exhibiting nonlinear and time-dependent mechanical properties. Corneal ulcers are one of the main pathologies that affect this tissue, disrupting its structural integrity and leading to impaired functions. In this study, uniaxial tensile and stress-relaxation tests are developed to evaluate stress-strain and time-dependent mechanical behaviour of porcine corneas. Results The samples are split in two groups: some corneas are analysed in an unaltered state (healthy samples), while others are injured with alkaline solution to create an experimental ulcer (lesioned samples). Furthermore, within each group, corneas are examined in two conditions: few hours after the enucleation (fresh samples) or after 7 days in a specific culture medium for the tissue (cultured samples). Finally, another condition is added: corneas from all the groups undergo or not a cross-linking treatment. In both stress-strain and stress-relaxation tests, a weakening of the tissue is observed due to the imposed conditions (lesion, culture and treatment), represented by a lower stiffness and increased stress-relaxation. Conclusions Alkali-induced corneal stromal melting determines changes in the mechanical response that can be related to a damage at microstructural level. The results of the present study represent the basis for the investigation of traditional and innovative corneal therapies.

Background/Aims Prompt diagnosis of septic arthritis in acute native hot joint presentations is essential to guide management. Patients are frequently admitted and treated with antibiotics whilst awaiting synovial fluid (SF) culture results, which may take 48hours. A rapid test to exclude septic arthritis would reduce unnecessary antibiotics and hospital admissions. Aim: To evaluate the utility of SF and serum tests in differentiating septic from non-septic causes of acute hot joints. Methods We performed a systematic literature review of diagnostic testing for diagnosis/exclusion of septic arthritis in acute hot joints. Medline, Scopus and Cochrane Library were searched by two researchers. Search strategy included MeSH terms for: causes of a hot or swollen joint or effusion; diagnostic marker or test; SF or serum. Inclusion criteria were: ≥1 serum or SF test(s) to differentiate septic from non-septic causes of acute hot native joints, compared with clinical assessment and SF microscopy and culture. English-language articles only were included, without date restriction. In addition to patient demographics, diagnoses and comparator diagnoses, the following was recorded for each test and threshold (where applicable): sensitivity, specificity, positive/negative predictive values and likelihood ratios, of septic arthritis. For directly comparable tests (i.e. identical fluid, test and threshold), bivariate random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool sensitivity, specificity and areas under curve (AUC). Results 8,443 articles were identified, with 54 eligible for inclusion. Information on 28 distinct markers in SF and serum, differentiating septic from non-septic joints, was extracted. Most markers had been tested at multiple potential diagnostic thresholds, yielding a total of 27 serum markers and 156 SF markers. Due to heterogeneity of study design, outcomes and diagnostic thresholds, meta-analysis was possible for only eight tests differentiating septic from non-septic joints (Table 1). Studies testing markers at other thresholds and/or in serum were not eligible for meta-analysis if not replicated in a second study. Conclusion Our review demonstrates many single tests with some evidence for diagnostic utility but individually with suboptimal accuracy, for exclusion of native joint infection. A far greater number of SF than serum tests were identified. A combination of several tests +/- stratification score is potentially required to optimise diagnostic accuracy. Further work is therefore indicated on the use of rapid and cost-effective biomarkers for the acute hot joint. Disclosure M. Dey: None. M. Al-Attar: None. L. Peruffo: None. S.S. Zhao: None. S. Formal methods (Computer science) ,Renewable energy sources - Abstract
The ever-growing presence of renewable energy sources has started a radical transformation of power grids worldwide. Their dynamical characteristics, the connections via power electronics, and their geographically distributed locations render their connection to the power grid substantially different from the traditional synchronous machines. Household solar panels are a striking example of this transition: their distribution is extremely sparse, and individual devices have a negligible contribution to the global electricity network; however, the presence of a large population of such devices influences the power grid in ways yet to be fully understood. In the first part of this thesis we test the behaviour of a variety of solar devices, in order to develop models representing the aggregated, heterogeneous population that is connected to the power network. We then present a model of the power grid whose parameters depend on the amount of solar devices connected to the grid. In particular we focus on the network frequency, and we study how features of the PV population affect the overall frequency signal. We investigate the frequency response after a generation loss contingency at varying levels of renewable penetration. We aim at identifying scenarios that lead to significant frequency deviations which activate a load shedding procedure. Simulations of critical circumstances are useful to highlight potential issues, yet are often not sufficient to guarantee the reliability of a complex, stochastic system as the power grid. In the second part of this dissertation we introduce formal methods, a suite of techniques to model complex systems as mathematical entities and to outline tight requirements about such systems. In particular we rely on the formal abstraction technique, which translates a stochastic system into a Markov model. By means of model checking, we assess the satisfaction of given requirements and we provide a formal guarantee of correctness. Our formal tests must specify a significant number of parameters as we consider various populations of solar devices. The perfect tuning of such parameters is a cumbersome, handmade responsibility. Finally, we automate this task proposing a parameter synthesis framework which automatically returns the values of parameters that satisfy the predefined requirements.

This thesis analyses how history teachers handle their inventory when choosing movies for their classes. Teachers were observed in order to discover their criteria of selection when using movies for their classes, what place these movies have in their class plans. The choice of movies was made by their potential of presenting to the subject of History other versions and interpretations about facts. We analyze the connections between Cinema and Education to enhance the questions about curriculum of History within the national referential for the Basic Education with the theoretical support of Foucault by focusing on the idea of problematizing but considering that there is no absolute truth. The concept of repertoire was developed from Thierry de Duve and his idea of collection, understanding the notion of canon as a privileged part within the repertoire. With this, it was possible to address the concept of repertoire of approach of Bourdieu with the notions of distinction, cultural capital, cultural arbitrary, in order to think of it as an individual and collective construction within the school. The handling of a repertoire is considered the exercise of composition of classes to meet specific demand of subjects, this notion is supported in the idea of curation as considered by Miriam Celeste Martins and Gisa Picosque, and in the form of organization according to the Atlas Mnmosyne elaborated by Aby Warburg to plan classes. The empirical method involved interviews with five teachers ? the subjects of the research are in different moments of their teaching trajectories and they teach in different schools of the public and private network of Porto Alegre. A script of interviews was written with open questions to allow the teachers to narrate their experiences and speak about strategies, criteria, and ways of creating in class. The empirical material was analyzed to dialogue with the repertoire and its handling, and three referential markers were created in three moments and they appear in the elaboration of the classes. There are three stages that, articulated, explain different ways in which the teachers handle their repertoire. The strategies of handling the choice of movies from their repertoire with the notion of curation; the different ways of thinking the exhibition of the movies inside the class and the post-movie moment, the strategy created by the teachers to validate the exhibition of the movies to their students. By looking at the markers separately, it was possible to understand how they always showing the handle of repertoire as an ability developed by teachers from their accumulation of experience and constant decision-taking to compose their classes. By analyzing with the teachers how they handle their repertoire of movies, it was perceived the diversity of ways of creating from the multiple possibilities of composition of classes. Since then, the No Dal Molin Permanent Presidium has become the common home of various anti-militarist realities and the space for the movement's creativity. Art has a founding role in this political activism, in various forms attributable to the sphere of public art. While the Vicenza military bases imitate the art of Andrea Palladio, in fact, the No Dal Molin Movement crosses the city with participatory artistic performances and productions. The article intends to deepen some of the artistic forms proposed from 2006 to 2014 and investigate their current legacy. Among these: the actions of invisible theater and street theater that the women of the movement used to initially stimulate the public debate on the basis; the contributions of local artists, such as the action addressed to Unesco The Burning Cemetery, by Alberto Peruffo; Silent Play, an audio-guided tour coordinated by Carlo Presotto and written collectively which, during the construction phase of the base, retraced the places and events that symbolize the movement.

This article studies the short -and long-term effects of Universal Basic Income programs - a uniform transfer to every individual in society - in the context of a developing economy and compares this policy with other schemes that condition the transfer on household characteristics such as income and education. We construct a dynastic heterogeneous-agent model, featuring uninsurable idiosyncratic risk, investment in physical and human capital, and choice of labor effort. We calibrate the model to Brazilian data and introduce a UBI transfer equivalent to roughly 4.5% of average household income. We find that, over the short run, this policy alleviates poverty and increases welfare, especially for the poor. Over time, however, income falls and poverty and inequality increase as fewer people stay in school, labor supply decreases, and savings fall. We then explore the consequences of an equivalent transfer that is both subject to means testing and requires recipients to enroll their children in school. This policy outperforms the UBI in several dimensions, increasing overall income, reducing poverty and inequality, and improving welfare. This result is robust to varying the magnitude of the cash transfer. We then investigate which aspects of the CCT make it so effective, and find that the schooling conditionality is crucial in ensuring its long- and even short- run success.

How does bankruptcy affect the dynamics of aggregate consumption? We quantify the trade-off between the insurance and creditworthiness effects of bankruptcy in response to tighter credit. We show that bankruptcy dampens the effect of tighter credit on aggregate consumption on impact because it allows borrowers to sustain consumption, but statutory exclusion from the credit market reduces consumption smoothing over time and slows the recovery. Default costs play a crucial role in bankruptcy decisions and also shape consumption dynamics. We find that the 2005 BAPCPA reform, by making bankruptcy more costly, worsened the negative welfare effects of the subsequent credit tightening.

We introduce an automated, formal, counterexample-based approach to synthesise Barrier Certificates (BC) for the safety verification of continuous and hybrid dynamical models. The approach is underpinned by an inductive framework: this is structured as a sequential loop between a learner, which manipulates a candidate BC structured as a neural network, and a sound verifier, which either certifies the candidate’s validity or generates counter-examples to further guide the learner. We compare the approach against state-of-the-art techniques, over polynomial and non-polynomial dynamical models: the outcomes show that we can synthesise sound BCs up to two orders of magnitude faster, with in particular a stark speedup on the verification engine (up to three orders less), whilst needing a far smaller data set (up to three orders less) for the learning part. Beyond improvements over the state of the art, we further challenge the new approach on a hybrid dynamical model and on larger-dimensional models, and showcase the numerical robustness of our algorithms and codebase.

The influence of hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) in the structure, dynamics, and functionality of biological and artificial complex systems is the subject of intense investigation. In this broad context, particular attention has recently been focused on the ultrafast H-bond dependent dynamical properties in the electronic excited state because of their potentially dramatic consequences on the mechanism, dynamics, and efficiency of photochemical reactions and photophysical processes of crucial importance for life and technology. Excited-state H-bond dynamics generally occur on ultrafast time scales of hundreds of femtoseconds or less, making the characterization of associated mechanisms particularly challenging with conventional time-resolved techniques. Here, 2D electronic spectroscopy is exploited to shed light on this still largely unexplored dynamic mechanism. An H-bonded molecular dimer prepared by self-assembly of two boron-dipyrromethene dyes has been specifically designed and synthesized for this aim. The obtained results confirm that upon formation of H-bonds and the dimer, a new ultrafast relaxation channel is activated in the ultrafast dynamics, mediated by the vibrational motions of the hydrogen donor and acceptor groups. This relaxation channel also involves, beyond intra-molecular relaxations, an inter-molecular transfer process. This is particularly significant considering the long distance between the centers of mass of the two molecules. These findings suggest that the design of H-bonded structures is a particularly powerful tool to drive the ultrafast dynamics in complex materials.

The lungs of cetaceans undergo anatomical and physiological adaptations that facilitate extended breath-holding during dives. Here, we present new insights on the ontogeny of the microscopic anatomy of the terminal portion of the airways of the lungs in five cetacean species: the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus); the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), the Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris); the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus); and the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba). We (a) studied the histology of the terminal portion of the airways; (b) used immunohistochemistry (IHC) to characterize the muscle fibers with antibodies against smooth muscle (sm-) actin, sm-myosin, and desmin; (c) the innervation of myoelastic sphincters (MESs) with an antibody against neurofilament protein; and (d) defined the diameter of the terminal bronchioles, the diameter and length of the alveoli, the thickness of the septa, the major and minor axis, perimeter and section area of the cartilaginous rings by quantitative morphometric analyses in partially inflated lung tissue. As already reported in the literature, in bottlenose and striped dolphins, a system of MESs was observed in the terminal bronchioles. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of smooth muscle in the terminal bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveolar septa in all the examined species. Some neurofilaments were observed close to the MESs in both bottlenose and striped dolphins. In fin, sperm, and Cuvier's beaked whales, we noted a layer of longitudinal smooth muscle going from the terminal bronchioles to the alveolar sacs. The morphometric analysis allowed to quantify the structural differences among cetacean species by ranking them into groups according to the adjusted mean values of the morphometric parameters measured. Our results contribute to the current understanding of the anatomy of the terminal airways of the cetacean lung and the role of the smooth muscle in the alveolar collapse reflex, crucial for prolonged breath-holding diving.

Coupling of molecular emitters to plasmon resonances in metal nanostructures has long been investigated to control the light– matter interaction at the nanoscale. The emergence of different coupling behaviors can be governed by the various combinations of emitters and plasmonic substrates, as well as the spatial arrangement of the individual components. Here colloidal assembly methods are exploited to prepare a responsive nanosystem where two sets of plexcitonic resonances in different coupling regimes can be selectively switched on and off, acting on external conditions such as concentration and presence of anions. The two sets of plexciton resonances are built exploiting the strong coupling between cationic gold nanoparticles and the same molecular moiety, an anionic porphyrin, in different aggregation states. When both plexciton resonances are simultaneously activated in the system, evidence for a plexciton relaxation cascade has been found in photoluminescence experiments. These findings have fundamental implications for achieving control over energy flow at the nanoscale.
