This study was conducted to investigate the effects of harvest time on the protein, oil, fatty acids and bioactive compounds in hazelnut cultivars (Corylus avellana L. cvs. 'Tombul', 'Palaz', 'Çakıldak', 'Okay 28' and 'Allahverdi'). The harvest was carried out at 7 different periods with weekly intervals from 20 July to 31 August. As the harvest time progressed, increases and decreases were detected in protein, oil, fatty acids and bioactive compounds. The highest oil content was measured in the H5 and H6 harvest periods. The highest content was determined in H3 for oleic acid. Higher total phenolics, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity were obtained in the first 3 harvest periods than in the other periods. The present findings revealed that the protein, fatty acids and bioactive compounds in hazelnut cultivars may differ according to the harvest time. The results obtained will provide clearer ideas to both the industry and the producers about the optimum harvest time for the intended use of these cultivars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio frequency (RF) signals are frequently used in emerging quantum applications due to their spin state manipulation capability. Efficient coupling of RF signals into a particular quantum system requires the utilization of carefully designed and fabricated antennas. Nitrogen vacancy (NV) defects in diamond are commonly utilized platforms in quantum sensing experiments with the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) method, where an RF antenna is an essential element. We report on the design and fabrication of high efficiency coplanar RF antennas for quantum sensing applications. Single and double ring coplanar RF antennas were designed with −37 dB experimental return loss at 2.87 GHz, the zero-field splitting frequency of the negatively charged NV defect in diamond. The efficiency of both antennas was demonstrated in magnetic field sensing experiments with NV color centers in diamond. An RF amplifier was not needed, and the 0 dB output of a standard RF signal generator was adequate to run the ODMR experiments due to the high efficiency of the RF antennas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion and Vickers surface hardness of resin cement under a simulated ceramic restoration with 3 different curing units: a conventional halogen unit, a high-intensity halogen unit, and a light-emitting diode system. Methods and Materials: A conventional halogen curing unit (Hilux 550) (40 s), a high-intensity halogen curing unit used in conventional and ramp mode (Optilux 501) (10 s and 20 s, respectively), and a light-emitting diode system (Elipar FreeLight) (20 s, 40 s) were used in this study. The dual-curing resin cement (Variolink II) was cured under a simulated ceramic restoration (diameter 5 mm, height 2 mm), and the degree of conversion and Vickers surface hardness were measured. For degree of conversion measurement, 10 specimens were prepared for each group. The absorbance peaks were recorded using the diffuse-reflection mode of Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. For Vickers surface hardness measurement, 10 specimens were prepared for each group. A load of 200 N was applied for 15 seconds, and 3 evaluations of each of the samples were performed. Results: Degree of conversion achieved with Optilux 501 (20 s) was significantly higher than those of Hilux, Optilux 501 (10 s), Elipar FreeLight (20 s), and Elipar FreeLight (40 s). For Vickers surface hardness measurement, Optilux 501 (20 s) produced the highest surface hardness value. No significant differences were found among the Hilux, Optilux 501 (10 s), Elipar FreeLight (20 s), and Elipar FreeLight (40 s). Conclusion: The high-intensity halogen curing unit used in ramp mode (20 s) produced harder resin cement surfaces than did the conventional halogen curing unit, high-intensity halogen curing unit used in conventional mode (10 s) and light-emitting diode system (20 s, 40 s), when cured through a simulated ceramic restoration.—Reprinted with permission of Quintessence Publishing. The highly toxic coplanar PCBs and other isomers were determined in harbour porpoises and fish (porpoise diet) collected from the Turkishcoastal water of the Black Sea, during 1993. The concentrations of total PCBs were found in the range of 5.0-34 g g-1 wet wt in the blubber of porpoises. Highly chlorinated members such as IUPAC Nos 138, 153 and 180 were the dominant congeners, consisting of 41% of the total PCB concentrations. The mean total 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalents (TEQs) of 13 coplanar PCBs including non-, mono- and di-ortho congeners were 1400 pg g-1 wet wt in the blubber of males and 300 pg g-1 wet wt in females. The IUPAC No. 118 was the most contributing congener occupying about 60% of the total TEQs.The most toxic non-ortho chlorine substituted coplanar PCBs such as IUPAC No. 77, 126 and 169 were minor contributors and accounted for 7.8, 4.2 and 0.7%, respectively, of the total TEQs. The activities of PB and MC-type enzymes were found to be low in Black Sea harbour porpoises, suggesting long term accumulation and possible toxic effects of PCBs in this species. Long-term use of prosthesis is the most important risk factor for the colonization of Candida species on the mucosal surfaces, which can lead to the development of denture-related stomatitis (DRS). Some individuals wearing prosthesis develop DRS and others do not. C. albicans strains isolated from both groups were genotypically compared. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the strain causing prosthesis stomatitis was different from the other strains genotypically. The study included 90 individuals wearing different prostheses and 20 control individuals with natural teeth. In the study 109 C. albicans strains were used which were isolated from the saliva samples and the mucosal surfaces of the tongues and palates of 51 individuals and then defined phenotypically. Phenotypic diagnosis of the isolates was genotypically verified by using species-specific PCR. For molecular typing, repetitive extragenic palindromic sequence polymerase chain reaction (REP-PCR) was employed. The results of the study revealed that REP-PCR had the capability to separate 109 C. albicans strains and six reference strains into 44 genotypes. Whereas C. albicans strains showed heterogenic distribution, C. albicans strains isolated from the individuals suffering from prosthesis stomatitis showed no specific genotypes. Abstract: Free-form machining is one of the commonly used manufacturing processes for several industries such as automobile, aerospace, die and mold industries. In 3D complicated free-form surfaces, it is critical, but often difficult, to select applicable cutting conditions to achieve high productivity while maintaining high quality of parts. It is essential to optimize the feedrate in order to improve the machining efficiency of the ball-end milling. Conservative constant feedrate values have been mostly used up to now since there was a lock of physical models and optimization tools for the machining processes. The common approach used in feedrate scheduling is material removal rate (MRR) model. In the MRR based approach, feedrate is inversely proportional to either average or instantaneous volumetric removal rate. Commonly used CAM programs and NC code generators based on only the geometric and volumetric analysis, but they do not concern the physics of the free-form machining process yet. The new approach that is also introduced in this paper is based on the mechanics of the process. In other words, the force-based models in which feedrate is set to values which keep either average or instantaneous machining forces to prescribed values. In this study, both feedrate scheduling strategies are compared theoretically and experimentally for 3D ball-end milling of free-form surfaces. It is shown that MRR based feedrate strategy outputs higher feedrate values compared to force based feedrate strategy. High feedrate values of the MRR strategy increase the cutting forces extensively which can be damaging to the part quality and to the CNC Machine. When the new force based feedrate-scheduling strategy introduced in this paper is used, it is shown that the machining time can be decreased significantly along the tool path. It has been found that non-fasting plasma glucose is a better marker of diabetic control than fasting plasma glucose in type 2 diabetes. The main aim of treatment of type 2 diabetic patients is to control plasma glucose and HbA1c levels. In this study, we aimed to assess the effects of three different insulin regimens (group I: lispro insulin + NPH insulin, group II: lispro insulin + metformin and group III: regular insulin + NPH insulin) on overall glycaemic control and metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetic patients with secondary oral anti-diabetic drug failure. Sixty type 2 diabetic patients with secondary OAD failure were randomly allocated into three different treatment groups equally. There were no significant differences between groups concerning age, body mass index, diabetes duration, HbA1c and serum lipid levels at the beginning of the study. During the 6-month treatment period, blood glucose levels were determined 10 times during 24 h at pre-meal, post-prandial 1 and 2 h and at bedtime. Group I was found to be the most effective treatment regimen in controlling HbA1c levels (group I vs. group II, p = 0.013; group I vs. group III, p = 0.001; group II vs. group III, p > 0.05). When the comparison was made in each group, change in HbA1c was statistically significant for all groups (−3.18%, p = 0.001; −2.02%, p = 0.043 and −2.66%, p = 0.008 respectively). Group I was found to be more effective in controlling fasting and post-prandial plasma glucose levels measured at all times during the day when compared with group II and group III. In group II triglyceride levels were found to be significantly reduced, whereas other groups had no effect on lipids. No serious hypoglycaemic episodes were observed in any of the cases, whereas in group I hypoglycaemic episode rates were increased (χ2 = 8.843, p = 0.012). Lispro insulin plus NPH insulin regimen is more effective in controlling both pre- and post-prandial glucose levels and HbA1c when compared to regular insulin plus NPH insulin combination. Mealtime lispro insulin plus metformin combination therapy should also be seriously considered as an effective and alternative treatment regimen. Objective:To investigate whether thymoquinone has any eliminative effects against inner-ear damage caused by acoustic trauma.Methods:Thirty-two male rats were divided into four groups. Group 1 was only exposed to acoustic trauma. Group 2 was given thymoquinone 24 hours before acoustic trauma and continued to receive it for 10 days after the trauma. Group 3 was only treated with thymoquinone, for 10 days. Group 4, the control group, suffered no trauma and received saline instead of thymoquinone. Groups 1 and 2 were exposed to acoustic trauma using 105 dB SPL white noise for 4 hours.Results:There was a significant decrease in distortion product otoacoustic emission values and an increase in auditory brainstem response thresholds in group 1 on days 1, 5 and 10, compared with baseline measurements. In group 2, a decrease in distortion product otoacoustic emission values and an increase in auditory brainstem response threshold were observed on day 1 after acoustic trauma, but measurements were comparable to baseline values on days 5 and 10. In group 3, thymoquinone had no detrimental effects on hearing. Similarly, the control group showed stable results.Conclusion:Thymoquinone was demonstrated to be a reparative rather than preventive treatment that could be used to relieve acoustic trauma. We aimed to evaluate the effect of acetylsalicylic acid ( ASA) treatment on diabetes-induced erectile dysfunction. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups as follows: (i) control (C), (ii) diabetic (D), (iii) ASA-treated control (C+ ASA) and (iv) ASA-treated diabetic (D+ ASA) groups. In groups 2 and 4, diabetes was induced by injection of 35 mg kg−1 streptozotocin. ASA (100 mg kg−1 day−1, orally) was administrated to rats in groups 3 and 4 for 8 weeks. Both intracavernosal pressure ( ICP) and mean arterial blood pressure ( MAP) were measured in in vivo studies. In organ bath, the relaxation responses to acetylcholine ( ACh), electrical field stimulation ( EFS) and sodium nitroprusside were tested in corpus cavernosum ( CC) strips. The mRNA expression for neuronal nitric oxide synthase ( nNOS) was calculated using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction technique. In in vivo experiments, diabetic rats displayed reduced ICP/ MAP values, which were normalised with ASA treatment. The relaxant response to high-dose ACh and EFS at low frequencies (1-8 Hz) in CC strips from the D+ ASA group were significantly higher when compared to the D group. Treatment with ASA normalised the raised mRNA expressions of nNOS in diabetic penile tissues. ASA may be involved in mRNA of protein synthesis of NO released from nonadrenergic and noncholinergic cavernosal nerve in diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Objective: This study evaluated the effect that different techniques for removing dental caries had on the strength of the microtensile bond to caries-affected human dentine created by three bonding agents. Materials and methods: Forty-five human molar teeth containing carious lesions were randomly divided into three groups according to the technique that would be used to remove the caries: a conventional bur, an Er:YAG laser or a chemo-mechanical Carisolv® gel (n =15). Next, each of the three removal-technique groups was divided into three subgroups according to the bonding agents that would be used: Clearfil® SE Bond, G-Bond®, or Adper® Single Bond 2 (n =5). Three 1mm2 stick-shaped microtensile specimens from each tooth were prepared with a slow-speed diamond saw sectioning machine fitted with a diamond-rim blade (n =15 specimens). For each removal technique one dentine sample was analysed using scanning electron microscopy. Results: There were statistically significant differences in the resulting tensile strength of the bond among the techniques used to remove the caries and there were also statistically significant differences in the strength of the bond among the adhesive systems used. The etch-and-rinse adhesive system was the most affected by the technique used to remove the caries; of the three techniques tested, the chemo-mechanical removal technique worked best with the two-step self etch adhesive system. Conclusion: The bond strength values of the etch-and-rinse adhesive system were affected by the caries removal techniques used in the present study. However, in the one- and two-step self etch adhesive systems, bond strength values were not affected by the caries removal techniques applied. While a chemo-mechanical caries removal technique, similar to Carisolv®, may be suggested with self etch adhesive systems, in caries removal techniques with laser, etch-and-rinse systems might be preferred. Clinical significance: Caries removal methods may lead to differences in the characteristics of dentine surface. Dentine ultra structure generally affects the bonding of adhesive materials commonly used in restorative dentistry. Whereas etch-and-rinse system, like the ones used in the present study, are affected by these changes, the self etch systems are not affected. The Turkish Association of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Diabetic Foot Infections Working Group conducted a prospective study to determine the factors affecting the outcomes of diabetic foot infections. A total of 96 patients were enrolled in the study. Microbiological assessment was performed in 86 patients. A total of 115 causative bacteria were isolated from 71 patients. The most frequently isolated bacterial species was Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( n = 21, 18.3%). Among cases with bacterial growth, 37 patients (43%) were infected with 38 (33%) antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The mean (±SD) antibiotics cost was 2,220.42 (±994.59) USD in cases infected with resistant bacteria, while it was 1,206.60 (±1,160.6) USD in patients infected with susceptible bacteria ( p < 0.001). According to the logistic regression analysis, the risk factors related to the growth of resistant bacteria were previous amputation ( p = 0.018, OR = 7.229) and antibiotics administration within the last 30 days ( p = 0.032, OR = 3.796); that related to the development of osteomyelitis was wound size >4.5 cm ( p = 0.041, OR = 2.8); and that related to the failure of the treatment was the growth of resistant bacteria ( p = 0.016, OR = 5.333). Diabetic foot osteomyelitis is usually a chronic infection and requires surgical therapy. Amputation is the accepted form of treatment for osteomyelitis. Limited limb-saving surgery and prolonged antibiotic therapy directed toward the definitive causative bacteria are most appropriate. This may decrease limb loss through amputations. As a result the infections caused by resistant bacteria may lead to a high cost of antibiotherapy, prolonged hospitalization duration, and failure of the treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
