In Europe, epiphytic lichens are incorporated in forest diversity monitoring projects in which sampling at the tree level is carried out on 4 grids on the 4 cardinal points (N, S, E, W) of the trunk. Our results, based on the analysis of a dataset referring to six forest sites in NE-Italy and including 264 trees, indicate that a lichen assessment based on sampling at the tree level less than four cardinal points might be effective in estimating species richness across different forest types, showing very high rates of species capture. Similar results were achieved if the reduction of sampling effort is applied to the number of trees sampled within each area. This effect can be explained taking into account the redundant information collected on the same tree. In the framework of forest monitoring programs, the main perspective of our results is related to the possibility of investing saved resources for improving lichen inventories by including in the surveys currently neglected microhabitats. Further studies would be welcome to identify an optimal balance between sampling effort and information gathered, as economic resources are often a constraint to activate and maintain large-scale and long-term monitoring projects.

The architecture of the “biowikifarm” publishing platform and some technical and social advantages of a document- and author-centric approach based on the MediaWiki open source software over custom-developed, database driven software are presented.

This study evaluated the effectiveness and life-strategies of freshwater lichens in colonizing newly constructed stone structures in low-elevation streams in a small nature reserve in northern Italy. Species richness, size of thalli, morphological and ontogenetic traits of the species were related to the age of restored habitats. Lichen colonization was surprisingly rapid, indicating the high potential of these organisms in colonizing restored habitats. However, the species pool found in the restored habitats was different than that found in natural sites in the same study area. The age of newly constructed habitats influenced both species richness and thallus size of the two most frequent Verrucaria species. Verrucaria aquatilis was a rapid colonizer invading the substrate by several small-sized and thin thalli which soon supported a large number of small perithecia whose development began in the earlier phase of thallus formation. V. elaeomelaena, on the contrary, developed according to a different strategy, establishing a thick thallus on which relatively large perithecia were formed much later than in V. aquatilis. As these taxa are important photoautotrophic components of freshwater ecosystems more ecological knowledge is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of different measures of river restoration on lichen communities. The main practical implication of our study is related to the value of small stone structures, such as riffles and ramps, for enhancing the establishment of pioneer freshwater lichens to rapidly colonize newly available substrata. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Tree species is a key factor in shaping epiphytic lichen communities. In managed forests, tree species composition is mainly controlled by forest management, with important consequences on lichen diversity. The main aim of this work was to evaluate the differences at tree level in macrolichen richness and composition between Abies alba Mill. and Fagus sylvatica L. in a temperate mixed forest in northern Italy, in addition to evaluating two different proportions of the two species at the stand level. Abies alba and F. sylvatica host lichen communities including several rare and sensitive species. Our findings indicate that both tree species were important for lichen diversity, since they hosted different communities. However, F. sylvatica proved to be a more favourable hosting tree for several rare and sensitive species. Species associated with A. alba were mainly acidophytic lichens, while those associated with F. sylvatica were foliose hygrophytic lichens, mainly establishing over bryophytes. The frequency of the flagship species Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. was a valuable predictor of cyanolichen richness and was useful in identifying sites hosting lichen communities that are potentially more sensitive to thinning and human disturbance. The results support the relevance of mixed A. alba – F. sylvatica formations among European habitats worthy of conservation.

Monitoring lichens on monuments can have different purposes, one of which is monitoring the effectiveness of restoration. In the present work, lichen recolonization on a calcareous statue was monitored for evaluating the long-term effectiveness of restoration in preventing new biological growth. Species richness and composition of lichen communities from three surveys (one pre-restoration and two post-restoration) covering a twelve years period, are compared. The long-term effectiveness of the restoration of the statue was low, and even the use of water repellents failed in avoiding lichen recolonization. The short durability of the treatment applied to the statue was also confirmed by the recolonization pattern which seemed more related to the geometry of the statue than to the hydrorepellence of its surface. Recolonization involved lichen communities which differed from those covering the statue before restoration. Some species were significantly associated with each step of the succession, as well as to pre-restoration conditions. The pre-restoration lichen community was more differentiated across the statue, indicating a complex "Statue Ecosystem" that is perhaps more typical of a later successional stage. On the contrary, only a few communities dominated by a few species were involved in the recolonization. The management of stoneworks exposed in the parks of villas could be more effective focusing on maintenance than on repeated cleaning or restoration, whose effects are hindered by practical difficulties in preventing the causes of biological growth. If restorations are not going to be maintained, it would be better to retain a more historic, diverse, and complex lichen community than a simplified community of "weedy" lichens that quickly cover almost the same area as the pre-restoration community did. With this perspective, in the environmental and artistic context of these parks, biodiversity should be included in the concept of the historic and artistic value of the artworks. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Hundred experiments of Hg bioaccumulation with the aquatic moss Rhynchostegium riparioides (Hedw.) C.E.O. Jensen transplanted under laboratory conditions were carried out with the aim of (1) measuring the metal uptake at increasing water concentrations (0.25–128 μg Hg 2+ L −1 ) and increasing exposure time (24–189 h), (2) studying the influence of pH (6.3–8.5) and water concentration of Na (3–114 mg L −1 ), Ca (62–125 mg L −1 ) and Mg (13–54 mg L −1 ) on the metal uptake, (3) achieving a database for mathematical and statistical elaborations, and, (4) producing an equation modelling the uptake. A linear uptake was observed for water concentrations ⩽4 μg Hg 2+ L −1 , while a saturation curve was observed at higher concentrations. Uptake followed a 3-stage trend for increasing exposure times: a phase of rapid accumulation (4–5 d), followed by an equilibrium plateau (2–3 d) and then by a second accumulation phase. The factor influence study revealed that variations in pH or water concentration of alkaline metals, within the range of typical values in freshwaters of NE Italy, did not produce significant differences ( p > 0.05) in the Hg uptake ratio (0.496 × 10 5 ⩽ Bio Accumulation Factor ⩽ 1.73 × 10 5 ). From a database of 28 Hg concentrations in mosses exposed to 0.25–4 μg Hg 2+ L −1 for 24–114 h, a mathematical equation was produced, to assess Hg micro-contamination in water. The difference between predicted and real concentration was generally included in the range ± 50%.

2006/2007 In the Italian Alps subalpine forests are still intensively managed for timber production. The increasing interest on near-to-nature silvicolture has favoured a scientific-based and multi-purpose management approach whose models are often developed on the basis of ecological studies in the remnant near-natural sites. This could apply also to lichens, whose role in biodiversity conservation in subalpine coniferous forests of the Italian Alps is still largely unknown. Thus, testing the relations between tree parameters, the availability of different types of Coarse Woody Debris (CWD) in different decay stages and the richness and composition of lichen communities in near-natural stands could be a first step to gather information for forest managers interested in conservation and in biodiversity assessment and monitoring. This thesis summarize the results of four case studies, carried out in near-natural sites in the Paneveggio Forest (NE Italy). They were focused on the evaluation of the influence of tree age and age-related parameters and CWD in shaping species richness and composition of lichen communities. In two complemetary sections the influence of forest management on epiphytic lichens and the suitability of a standard assessment of lichen diversity to predict total species richness are also evaluated. Tree-level lichen diversity and composition proved to be related to the main features of the trees such as age and size. Several lichens, including nationally rare species, are related to old trees (more than 200 years old), which are normally absent in managed forests. The macrolichen Letharia vulpina, which is a relatively dispersal limited species related to old-trees is suggested as a potential indicator of tree growth continuity. Its use as an indicator species is strongly enhanced since it is easily identifiable by non-specialists. Also CWD has an important role for lichen diversity in subalpine forests. Stumps, which are the main type of available CWD in managed stands, host several nationally rare species, which are related to different stages of wood decay. However, the presence of different types of CWD in different decay stages proved to enhance several nationally rare species, indicating that the retention of logs, snags and stumps should be included in management plans aiming at improving naturalistic silvicolture in the Alps. The relations between lichen communities and some structural features of mature forests such as over-mature trees and different types of CWD in different decay stages suggest their suitability for evaluating tree growth- and forest continuity, and conservation importance of subalpine forests of the Alps. Lichens should be therefore included in the framework of indicators which are used to evaluate the effectiveness of forest management for biodiversity conservation in the Alps. Nelle Alpi italiane le foreste subalpine di conifere sono ancora intensamente utilizzate per la produzione di legname. Il crescente interesse verso la selvicoltura naturalistica ha tuttavia favorito un approccio gestionale polifunzionale i cui modelli sono spesso sviluppati sulla base di studi ecologici condotti nei pochi siti prossimo-naturali ancora rimasti. Questo approccio ben si adatta ai licheni, il cui ruolo nella conservazione della biodiversità nelle foreste subalpine a conifere delle Alpi italiane è ancora poco conosciuto. Pertanto, testare le relazioni tra le caratteristiche degli alberi, la disponibilità di diversi tipi di legno morto in diversi stadi di decomposizione e la ricchezza e composizione delle comunità licheniche in siti prossimo-naturali rappresenta un primo contributo all’acquisizione di informazioni applicabili nel contesto di una gestione forestale attenta alla conservazione della biodiversità. Questa tesi risssume i risultati di quattro casi di studio condotti in siti prossimo-naturali all’interno della Foresta di Paneveggio (NE-Italia) e focalizzati sulla valutazione dell’influenza dell’età degli alberi (e di parametri ad essa collegati) e del legno morto sulla ricchezza specifica e la composizione delle comunità licheniche. In due studi complementari viene inoltre valutato l’effetto della gestione forestale sui popolamenti di licheni epifiti e viene testata l’efficacia di un metodo standardizzato per misurare la diversità lichenica epifita nel predire la ricchezza specifica totale a livello di albero. La diversità e la composizione dei popolamenti lichenici a livello di albero è risultata essere correlata alle principali caratteristiche degli alberi come l’età e le dimensioni. In particolare, molti licheni rari a livello nazionale risultano correlato agli alberi ultra-maturi con più di 200 anni, che normalmente sono assenti nelle foreste gestite a scopo produttivo. Il macrolichene Letharia vulpina, specie a dispersione relativamente limitata e correlata agli alberi vetusti, è un potenziale indicatore di continuità ecologica a livello di albero. Il suo impiego come specie indicatrice è inoltre favorito dal fatto che si tratta di un lichene facilmente riconoscibile da parte di personale non specializzato. Anche il legno morto ha un ruolo importante per la biodiversità lichenica nelle foreste subalpine. Le ceppaie, che rappresentano il principale tipo di legno morto nei boschi produttivi, ospitano molti licheni rari a livello nazionale che sono correlati a diversi stadi di decomposizione del legno. Tuttavia anche la presenza di diversi tipi di legno morto in diversi stadi di decomposizione è importante per molte specie rare e pertanto nei piani di gestione naturalistica delle foreste alpine si dovrebbe considerare il parziale mantenimento, oltre alle ceppaie, di tronchi morti in piedi e al suolo. Le relazioni tra le comunità licheniche e alcuni aspetti strutturali delle foreste prossimo-naturali come la presenza di alberi vetusti e di diversi tipi di legno morto in diversi stadi di decomposizione, suggeriscono la possibilità di utilizzare i licheni per valutare la continuità ecologica e l’importanza conservazionistica delle foreste subalpine delle Alpi. I licheni dovrebbero pertanto essere inclusi nel set di indicatori che vengono utilizzati per valutare l’efficacia della gestione forestale nella conservazione della biodiversità. XX Ciclo 1966

2006/2007 Il Progetto Vicenza Moss Bags è nato allo scopo di approfondire le conoscenze sui processi di bioaccumulo di elementi in traccia nei trapianti di muschi acquatici e di calibrare questa metodologia di biomonitoraggio per i principali fiumi vicentini. Gli aspetti metodologici del lavoro consistono nella revisione di alcune linee guida per l’utilizzo, il trattamento e l’analisi dei muschi, proposte dai maggiori esperti della disciplina e vagliate dal nostro gruppo di ricerca. Gli aspetti applicativi riguardano innanzitutto alcune esperienze di bioaccumulo in ambiente controllato, mediante un sistema ad acqua fluente realizzato nel laboratorio ARPAV di Bassano del Grappa, che hanno portato alla scoperta di interazioni fra i diversi elementi in traccia durante la fase di assorbimento, al confronto della risposta d’accumulo in muschi vivi e muschi morti ed all’elaborazione di una funzione matematica predittiva delle concentrazioni di mercurio in acqua attraverso i moss bags. La fase applicativa si è completata con lo svolgimento di due piani di biomonitoraggio: il primo nel bacino del fiume Bacchiglione (118 stazioni in 7 corsi d’acqua), che ha portato alla definizione di un background specifico dell’area di studio per 13 elementi in traccia, alla formulazione di altrettanti indici di alterazione ambientale con relative scale d’interpretazione ed all’elaborazione di numerose mappe tematiche in forma cartacea e digitale. Il secondo piano di monitoraggio si è svolto lungo il tratto vicentino del fiume Brenta, dove è stata predisposta una piccola rete di osservazione composta da 6 stazioni fisse, visitate periodicamente (33 interventi), che ha consentito di registrare l’andamento spaziotemporale delle concentrazioni in riferimento alle fonti di pressione ed alle condizioni idrologiche del corso d’acqua. La tecnica dei moss bags si è sempre dimostrata utile nella caratterizzazione delle acque superficiali in svariate condizioni chimiche e fisiche, è un potente strumento complementare al prelievo d’acqua estemporaneo per il monitoraggio di contaminazioni croniche od intermittenti ed è matura per un processo istituzionale di codifica anche in Italia. La tesi si articola in 5 capitoli. L’INTRODUZIONE GENERALE presenta il problema della contaminazione da elementi in traccia nei corsi d’acqua ed alcune metodologie di monitoraggio impiegate per il suo controllo. Seguono una trattazione di alcuni aspetti biologici, fisiologici ed ecologici delle briofite acquatiche e la storia del loro utilizzo come bioaccumulatori. Molte delle nozioni riportate sono tratte dalle sintesi metodologiche francesi, che da oltre vent’anni rappresentano il principale punto di riferimento nel settore. Si dichiarano infine gli obiettivi del lavoro. Negli ASPETTI METODOLOGICI si riportano le modalità di utilizzo, trattamento ed analisi delle briofite messe appunto dai ricercatori più autorevoli del settore e vagliate o modificate dal nostro gruppo di lavoro nel corso delle sperimentazioni. I RISULTATI della SPERIMENTAZIONE IN LABORATORIO e della SPERIMENTAZIONE IN CAMPO costituiscono invece gli aspetti applicativi, affrontati in fase preliminare e successivamente in via definitiva. Vengono trattate le esperienze in condizioni controllate per lo studio dei processi bioaccumulo e le operazioni di biomonitoraggio nell’area di studio. Le CONCLUSIONI GENERALI presentano una valutazione globale dei risultati in risposta agli obiettivi prefissati ed in prospettiva degli sviluppi futuri. XX Ciclo 1979

In Italy several natural reserves include riparian habitats, whose role in lichen conservation is still poorly known. This work aims at evaluating the importance for lichen conservation of a riparian natural reserve in NE Italy surrounded by a highly disturbed landscape, and at exploring the relations between lichen composition and different forest types. Epiphytic lichens were surveyed by a standard assessment protocol in: (1) alluvial Salix alba forests, (2) Alnus sp.pl. and Populus sp.pl. riparian forests, and (3) lowland Carpinus betulus and Quercus sp.pl. forests. One-way ANOVA was used to test differences between forest types. Species composition was explored by means of Redundancy Analysis. The overall lichen flora is relatively poor and rather homogeneous due to a group of disturbance-tolerant lichens, which are frequent in all forest types. This suggests a strong influence of the landscape context on species richness and composition, independently of the local habitat quality. However, the three forest types have rather different lichen floras, the least interesting for conservation being the riparian Alnus stands, while the alluvial Salix stands host a more sensitive flora and are worthy of lichen conservation. In spite of the disturbance and of its small extension, the reserve is still able to host several rare lichens. © 2008 Società Botanica Italiana.

Moss bags of Rhynchostegium riparioides were exposed to different water concentrations of 11 trace elements under laboratory conditions, according to a saturated fractional factorial design (67 treated combinations), with the aim of measuring (1) element uptake and (2) the main effects and first-order interactions of influent factors. Bioaccumulation was directly proportional to water concentration, but the uptake ratio (ranging from 10(2) to 10(5)) also depended on the concentration of other metals. The highest uptake ratios were observed for Al, Cu, Cr, Hg, and Pb. The multiple regression model showed that interactions among elements exist and induce both antagonism (Fe is the most frequent competitor) and synergism (Cr exerts a great influence on Pb and Zn uptake). Interactions might be relatively strong (as for As, Cr, and Pb) or weak (Cd and Hg). This evidence should be taken into consideration in biomonitoring surveys of industrial sites, where effluents release more than one contaminant.

Tree age and tree structure are important determinants for epiphytic lichen communities, affecting substrate stability, light availability, and propagule dispersal. However, little is known about the relative importance of these 2 factors on many species. This work aims to evaluate the importance of tree age and tree structure in explaining the within-stand frequency of the macrolicheh Letharia vulpina. The study was carried out in 2 larch-stone pine forests in the Eastern Italian Alps. The frequency of Letharia was evaluated using a standard sampling method. To explain the within-stand frequency of Letharia, tree age and severil variables related to tree structure were considered. Multiple ordinary least square regression was applied to clarify the influence of the set of variables. Several partial regressions were then computed to evaluate the relative importance of each significant predictor. The frequency of Letharia increases with increasing tree age, tree diameter, and first branch height. Tree age is the most important variable, accounting for one third of the total explained variation, although tree structure also his a significant effect on lichen frequency. Due to its dispersal limitations and old-tree dependence Letharia is proposed as a suitable indicator of forest continuity. The results may be of interest for conservation purposes, since the frequency of Letharia may be enhanced by protecting old trees.

The present monitoring study was undertaken to analyze the impact of atmospheric pollution on the lichens found near a power station in northern Spain. Data from 565 releves gathered on 113 sites were analyzed. In areas near the power station the lichen species belong to the Xanthorion community. In areas away from the power station and that are not under the influence of dominant winds, the lichenic diversity increases and the species present belong to the Parmelion community. In intermediate areas between the two, there is a great increase in lichen diversity, in these areas there is a replacement of the species that typically belong to the Xanthorion community, by species typical of the Parmelion community. Because of this we propose the analysis of the number of lichen species together with the distribution of bioindicator taxa as a complement to lichen diversity analysis in biomonitoring studies.

135 infrageneric taxa of epiphytic lichen were found in 20 stands of tree-line forests of the Central-Eastern Italian Alps. Three forest types were considered: (1) late successional stands with several large trees, (2) pioneer stands on abandoned pastures without large trees, and (3) open and grazed stands. They were compared on the basis of four main criteria: (1) species richness, (2) number of rare species, (3) number of species that are exclusive to the subalpine belt in Italy, and (4) number of species that are exclusive to the Alps in Italy. Species richness is higher in the late successional stands, which also host a higher share of rare and exclusive species. The total number of rare species per site is correlated with the total number of species, as well as with the number of common species, and with the total number of macrolichens. Rare macrolichens are correlated with common macrolichens. Two main groups of target species with decreasing conservation priority are identified. Letharia vulpina is suggested as signal species for sites worthy of conservation. The guild of macrolichens may be used as an indicator of both species richness and of the occurrence of rare species.

The lichen flora of freshwater habitats in the Italian Alps is reviewed: 20 genera and 43 species are known, of which crustose lichens with sexual reproduction prevail. Freshwater lichen richness is highest near the treeline on siliceous substrata in exposed and well-lit sites. The importance of several ecological factors on freshwater lichen distribution and ecology is discussed.

This paper aims to provide a biogeographical analysis of the epiphytic lichen flora of S Calabria by means of chorograms (i.e. distributional maps showing the joint distribution of multiple taxa). Two datasets on both local and Italian distribution were used. Local distribution is described by records of 135 epiphytic species in 14 sampling sites (5 trees per site, boles sampled from the ground to 2 m) representing the main vegetation belts of the survey area. A cluster analysis of the species, based on their commonness-rarity in the 9 main bioclimatic areas and in the 20 administrative regions of Italy, was applied. For each of the 7 clusters of species (chorotypes), a chorogram was produced. The matrix of species and sites was also submitted to numerical classification, and 5 clusters of sites were obtained, corresponding to the main altitudinal belts and tree species. For each group of sites, the frequencies of chorotypes were calculated. The results show a clear relationship between local distribution, mainly related to ecological conditions, and the Italian one. The truly Mediterranean forests of the survey area have the highest incidence of the Tyrrhenian element. Beech forests of the montane belt, dominated by broad-ranging lichens, are the most diverse biogeographically. The pine forests lying above the temperate belt do not host a peculiar lichen flora, being dominated by broad-ranging circumboreal species.

Part of the Lichenological Herbarium of the University of Trieste (TSB) was infested by Lasioderma serricorne, a polyphagus coleopteran. 1440 samples of 50 lichen species with different chemistry (Parmelia s.lat., Physcia s.lat.) were analyzed in order to assess whether the lichen diet of the insect was species- and especially lichen-chemistry-selective. Multivariate analysis indicates a significant negative correlation between the presence of some lichen substances and grazing phenomena. Atranorin, calcium oxalate, fumarprotocetraric acid, gyrophoric acid, lecanoric acid, skyrin, usnic acid and zeorin play an antiherbivorous role.

Moss bags of the aquatic bryophyte Rhynchostegium riparioides (Hedw.) C. Jens. were transplanted into an irrigation ditch in the Province of Vicenza (NE Italy), affected by intermittent trace element contamination due to galvanics. The study aimed at: (a) testing the ability of mosses to detect different patterns of pollution, (b) providing information about intensity and temporal extension of pollution events, and (c) localising the main sources. Moss bags were collected after 20, 34, 48 and 62 days of exposure. The concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in the desiccated apical shoots of mosses were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mean concentrations measured in non-contaminated stations of a previous work were adopted as background values, to calculate the contamination factor (CF). Transplants were able to: (a) detect spatial patterns of bioaccumulation, (b) reveal chronic contamination by Pb and Cu, intermittent contamination by Cr, Zn, and Ni, and a release of Cd by moss bags, and (c) localise the main emission sources.

2002/2003 Questo studio si propone di dimostrare come un modello schematizzato della diversità lichenica epifita sia in grado di fornire risposte diversificate su vari aspetti dello stato dell'ambiente e sugli effetti della gestione antropica delle risorse naturali, discernendo la variabilità del dato dovuta a fattori ambientali da quella effettivamente rapportabile agli effetti dell'inquinamento o comunque delle attività umane. Il rilevamento di 165 stazioni di campionamento m diversi habitat in tutto il territorio regionale ligure, ha permesso di segnalare complessivamente 196 specie licheniche, di cui 18 specie nuove per la Liguria. È probabile che l'indagine accurata di habitat particolarmente favorevoli, come ad esempio oliveti e castagneti da frutto, e di aree ancora relativamente poco esplorate (es. Alpi Liguri) permetta di migliorare ulteriormente le conoscenze floristiche. Il modello statistico ricavato dai dati rilevati evidenzia che i principali fattori che influenzano la diversità lichenica epifita in Liguria sono climatici (in particolare precipitazioni e temperatura). La stima del contributo di queste variabili, permette di valutare con più precisione l'effetto degli altri fattori indagati (quali gestione forestale, inquinamento atmosferico, incendi boschivi e trattamenti fitosanitari) che influiscono sulla diversità in misura diversa nella regione e sulle specie licheniche. La distribuzione delle specie licheniche epifite è disomogenea. Esistono habitat a bassa diversità che occupano la maggior parte del territorio e habitat ad alta diversità (hotspot) dove è concentrata la maggior parte delle specie rare. L'analisi della flora licheni ca e delle condizioni ambientali ha permesso di stabilire le principali cause di variabilità (sia naturali, sia antropiche) per ciascun habitat. Oliveti, boschi maturi di castagno e aree non forestate rurali sono gli habitat più idonei per i licheni epifiti in Liguria, mentre aree antropizzate di fondovalle, faggete e boschi di conifere sono ambienti con una flora lichenica meno ricca. La stretta relazione dei licheni epifiti con i parametri climatici fa di questi organismi degli ottimi indicatori, utilizzabili nel monitoraggio dei cambiamenti a lungo termine, come la tropicalizzazione delle aree submediterranee e la desertificazione delle aree mediterranee secche. Uno dei principali problemi nel biomonitoraggio mediante licheni è distinguere l'effetto dei fattori antropici di alterazione, come l 'inquinamento, la gestione forestale, gli incendi boschivi, da quello dei parametri climatici. Lo studio dei pattem di distribuzione di specie legate a minime variazioni di precipitazioni e temperatura, come quelle suboceaniche, ha permesso di delimitare regioni nelle quali gli effetti del clima sono relativamente costanti e in cui è possibile imputare la maggior parte della variabilità a fattori di disturbo. In particolare, i risultati ottenuti confermano una principale divisione tra una regione Submediterranea più secca, (nella parte savonese della Riviera di Ponente) e una regione Tirrenica più umida, (in Provincia di Imperia e nella Riviera di Levante), per la quale viene proposta, in questo lavoro, una nuova scala interpretativa dei valori IBL, basata sull'approccio delle deviazioni percentuali dalla massima diversità potenziale (Loppi et al. 2002a, b). Nell'area studio, molte specie hanno un elevato grado di vulnerabilità potenziale. Attualmente l'inquinamento rappresenta un basso rischio effettivo per la diversità lichenica in Liguria: infatti, le aree in cui l'impatto dei gas fitotossici è maggiore hanno una flora lichenica già estremamente impoverita, mentre le aree più ricche non sono sottoposte a carichi inquinanti significativi. Altri fattori di disturbo costituiscono, invece, un preoccupante elemento di rischio. Per esempio, per quanto riguarda gli oliveti, i trattamenti fitosanitari e i nuovi metodi di gestione della coltura rappresentano un rischio effettivo e non stimabile per molte popolazioni di specie rare. Gli incendi sono un fattore di disturbo che provoca l 'istantanea distruzione dell'habitat. Grazie al recente Piano Regionale di previsione, prevenzione e lotta attiva contro gli incendi boschivi (Regione Liguria 2003), il livello di rischio per la diversità lichenica è tuttavia stimabile ed è particolarmente alto nell'entroterra imperiese. Anche la ceduazione è un fattore di disturbo con forte impatto sulla diversità lichenica in Liguria, in quanto la maggior parte delle aree forestate è attualmente governata a ceduo. Tuttavia, il livello di rischio è difficilmente stimabile, mancando piani organici di programmazione dei tagli forestali a livello regionale. La definizione quantitativa del livello di rarità ha permesso di individuare le specie e le aree liguri a priorità di conservazione. In molti casi, gli hotspot di rarità e diversità lichenica non coincidono con le zone già sottoposte a vincoli di protezione, come Parchi Nazionali e Regionali, Siti di Interesse Comunitario (SIC) e Zone a Protezione Speciale (ZPS). Per questo motivo e visto l'elevato livello di rischio per i si ti, dovrebbero essere adottate alcune misure di conservazione, quali la realizzazione di monitoraggi periodici della diversità; la protezione di habitat ad elevata diversità licheni ca (es. castagneti da frutto); la conservazione della continuità ecologica spaziale e temporale degli habitat; la realizzazione di studi di popolazione tra cui indagini sui genotipi e valutazioni della probabilità di sopravvivenza. Infine, dal punto di vista applicativo, i dati raccolti nel corso di questo lavoro sono stati utilizzati per valutare l 'applicabilità delle linee guida APAT per il biomonitoraggio degli effetti dell'inquinamento atmosferico (Brunialti & Giordani 2004; Ferretti & Fomasier 2004) e nell'elaborazione di un protocollo per la valutazione della qualità degli ecosistemi forestali (Stofer et al. 2003), utilizzato nel progetto europeo ICP-Forests. 2001/2002 La presente tesi di ricerca si basa sull'utilizzo applicativo e sull'analisi critica di una nuova metodologia per l 'uso di licheni come bioindicatori di gas fitotossici. La metodica si basa essenzialmente sul rilevamento della biodiversità di licheni epifiti e sulla sua interpretazione in termini di alterazione dello stato dell'aria. Nell'anno 2000, durante un workshop internazionale tra ricercatori ed operatori del settore, è stato promosso un nuovo protocollo di rilevamento il cui scopo è superare gli elementi di soggettività insiti in quelli precedentemente adottati. Il protocollo è stato recentemente recepito dal' ANP A (Agenzia Nazionale per la Protezione dell'Ambiente) ed è stato saggiato nel presente studio. Esso si divide in una parte metodologica ed una applicativa.Si riportano i risultati del lavoro di ricerca inteso a verificare l'applicabilità del nuovo protocollo di rilevamento della biodiversità lichenica per scopi di biomonitoraggio ambientale. Il protocollo, sviluppato da operatori e ricercatori del settore nel corso di un workshop internazionale n eli' estate 2000, è stato adottato recentemente dali' ANP A (Agenzia Nazionale per la Protezione dell'Ambiente). La metodica di rilevamento riportata nel protocollo è stata confrontata con quella precedentemente adottata in Italia. Le due metodiche (di seguito citate come metodica "Nuova" per la più recente, metodica "Vecchia" per la precedente) differiscono profondamente per le caratteristiche del reticolo di rilevamento della diversità lichenica e per il suo posizionamento sul tronco d'albero. Il reticolo "Nuovo" è costituito da quattro subunità, ognuna delle quali costituita da 5 celle di dimensioni l Ox l O cm, da posizionare in corrispondenza dei punti cardinali dell'albero. Questo permetterebbe di superare la soggettività insita nella metodica "Vecchia" dal momento che il reticolo di rilevamento, costituito da l O celle di l Ox 15 cm, veniva posizionato arbitrariamente dali' operatore nel punto di massima densità lichenica. Le due metodiche sono state testate in 61 stazioni di campionamento in due diverse aree del Friuli - Venezia Giulia e della Slovenia, caratterizzate da condizioni climatiche simili ed ampio range di pressione antropica. I due set di dati sono stati sottoposti a test di regresswne lineare. Essi sono significativamente correlati, tuttavia i dati ottenuti dalle due metodiche non sono direttamente comparabili (e quindi convertibili) dal momento che esse analizzano aspetti diversi delle comunità licheniche presenti nei reticoli di rilevamento. I rilievi fioristi ci eseguiti in aree ritenute "naturali" (ovvero pnve di evidenti fenomeni di inquinamento), ottenuti con entrambe le metodiche in 11 stazioni, sono stati sottoposti ad analisi multivariata al fine di individuare eventuali gradienti florisitici, nonché per verificare la dispersione dei valori di diversità lichenica in aree ritenute naturali. I risultati indicano una buona coerenza interpretativa dei dati fitosociologici ottenuti dalle due metodiche. I risultati indicano anche che le situazioni ritenute altamente naturali non sono necessariamente correlate ai massimi valori di diversità lichenica. Dall'analisi è emersa una certa variabilità dei valori dovuta principalmente ai tipi vegetazionali. Le comunità di Parmelion presentano valori di diversità inferiori rispetto a quelle di Xanthorion, se calcolati con la metodica "Nuova". La metodica "Vecchia" non rivela particolari differenze tra i due tipi vegetazionali, seppur si noti maggiori valori di diversità lichenica per comunità di transizione. Tale variabilità, distinta tra le due metodiche, può essere imputabile anche alle diverse caratteristiche dei reticoli di rilevamento. I dati ottenuti sono stati utilizzati per costruire una nuova scala di interpretazione della biodiversità lichenica, in termini di alterazione dello stato dell'aria, per la regione bioclimatica submediterranea nord-adriatica. La scala si basa essenzialmente sull'interpretazione dei valori di diversità licheni ca in condizioni naturali ed in condizioni di "alterazione" (deviazione dalla naturalità). La scala, come quella precedentemente utilizzata in Italia, è divisa in sette classi delimitate da specifici valori di biodiversità lichenica, che esprimono il grado di deviazione da condizioni naturali identificando eventuali stati di alterazione ambientale. Durante la fase di campionamento e nelle successive elaborazioni dei dati, sono state individuate le seguente differenze tra le due metodiche. l) Il tempo richiesto da due operatori per rilevare una stazione di campionamento con la metodica "Nuova" sino a due volte superiore rispetto alla metodica "Vecchia". Questo è dovuta a due principali fattori: • la nuova metodica di rilevamento è basata su quattro rilievi floristici per albero invece di uno solo, pari ad un incremento di superficie di rilevamento del 35 % • il posizionamento del reticolo "Vecchio" nel punto di masstma copertura riduceva la possibilità di trovare talli lichenici poco sviluppati o deteriorati, la cui determinazione è difficile e richiede molto più tempo. La metodica "Nuova" costringe più spesso a rilevare zone del tronco con una flora deteriorata e talli poco sviluppati. 2) La metodica "Nuova" richiede maggiori conoscenze floristiche delle specie. Come già accennato, essa costringe più frequentemente a rilevare talli malamente o poco sviluppati, di difficile riconoscimento tassonomico. La metodica "Vecchia" invece consentiva di rilevare nei punti di massima copertura, che spesso coincidono con un migliore sviluppo dei talli licheni ci. 3) Le due metodiche forniscono informazioni floristiche comparabili. Tuttavia l'elevato numero di dati prodotti dalla metodica "Nuova", quattro volte superiori a quella "Vecchia", rende le elaborazioni statistiche e multivariate eccessivamente laboriosi per scopi di biomonitoraggio ambientale. Concludendo, il nuovo protocollo di campionamento si dimostra un valido metodo per valutare la diversità lichenica. Il suo maggior punto di forza è indubbiamente la oggettività di esecuzione. Il margine d'errore dell'operatore viene ridimensionato e "ridotto" esclusivamente alla capacità di riconoscimento delle specie licheniche. Il metodo è quindi appropriato per studi routinari di biomonitoraggio ambientale.Si presentano i risultati dello studio di biomonitoraggio ambientale tramite licheni come bioindicatori di inquinamento da gas fitotossici, commissionato nell'agosto del 2001 dalla Provincia di Gorizia al Dipartimento di Biologia dell'Università degli Studi di Trieste. La ricerca è stata eseguita nel comprensorio transfrontaliero costituito dai comuni di Gorizia (I), Nova Gorica (Slo) e Sempeter-Vrtojba (Slo ), per un totale di 31 stazioni di campionamento. Il presente lavoro è uno dei primi in Italia in cui si adotta il nuovo protocollo promosso dali' ANP A per studi di biomonitoraggio tramite licheni. Esso rappresenta inoltre un primo esempio italiano di collaborazione transfrontaliera nell'ambito di studi di biomonitoraggio ambientale. I risultati sono riassunti come segue: • La flora dell'area di studio, moderatamente ricca, e la presenza di specie sensibili all'inquinamento indicano uno stato di buona naturalità, dovuta ad una moderata pressione antropica che si identifica con attività agricole non intensive, attività industriali non consistenti e un tessuto urbano lasso, escludendo l'agglomerato urbano di Gorizia-Nova Gorica. • La bassa frequenza di specie comuni nella fascia fitoclimatica considerata, indica la presenza di fattori di disturbo di probabile origine antropica. • I valori di Biodiversità Lichenica sono medio alti in tutta l'area di studio, con un progressivo deterioramento avvicinandosi alla sua porzione centrale dove si fondono i tre maggiori centri urbani: Gorizia, Nova Gorica e Sempeter. Come da risultati del presente studio, si suggerisce di non sottovalutare nell'interpretazione della diversità lichenica in termini di alterazione ambientale, il fattore di disturbo rappresentato dallo stress igrico cui le specie possono essere sottoposte in ambiente urbano. • Le fasce di maggiore alterazione dello stato dell'aria seguono i regimi prevalenti dei venti e la morfologia del territorio, suggerendo fenomeni di deriva di gas fitotossici da fonti esterne al territorio considerato. Le ristrette dimensioni dell'area indagata non consentono di fornire informazioni più dettagliate su natura ed ubicazione di queste fonti inquinanti. In the last decades, several methods were proposed for assessing environmental quality — mainly air pollution — on the basis of lichen data (see chapter 4, this volume). At the end of the 80s the predictivity of 20 different methods with respect to instrumental pollution data was tested in Switzerland using multiple regression [1, 5]. The highest correlation was found with the sum of frequencies of lichen species within a sampling grid of 10 units positioned on the trunks of free-standing trees. This method was immediately and widely adopted in several other countries, esp. Italy and Germany, with some modifications, chiefly concerning the size of the sampling grid. Since 1987, hundreds of studies were carried out with this approach, which led to its standardization in the form of guidelines both in Germany [13], and in Italy [7].

The concentrations of 16 metals were measured in peripheral and central parts of the foliose epiphytic lichens Parmelia caperata and Xanthoria parietina collected in north-east Italy. Relevant intra- and interspecific variability was shown by multivariate analysis (classification and ordination) of the matrix of metals and samples. The central, older parts of the thalli contained significantly higher amounts of most metals in both species. Significative differences were also found between peripheral parts of the two species, with higher concentrations of Fe and Al in Xanthoria, and Cd and Zn in Parmelia. An inter-species comparison of several hundred Italian measurements confirmed the higher affinity of Parmelia for Cd and Zn, but not that of Xanthoria for Fe and Al. In order to enhance data quality in biomonitoring studies, it is suggested to analyse only peripheral parts of the lichens, and to avoid the joint use of Parmelia and Xanthoria when monitoring Cd and Zn.

05 infrageneric taxa, 777 of lichenized fungi, 23 of lichenicolous fungi, and 5 of non-lichenized fungi belonging to genera including also lichenized forms are reported from the eastern part of the Italian Peninsula. Six regions were surveyed, with a total of 130 collecting sites: Marche (35 sites, 420 taxa), Umbria (2 sites, 106 taxa), Abruzzo (23 sites, 460 taxa), Molise (11 sites, 304 taxa), Puglia (38 sites, 424 taxa) and Basilicata (21 sites, 337 taxa). These regions were among the lichenologically least known in Italy; their floras, compared with data provided six years ago in the first checklists of Italian lichens, have increased as follows: Marche, 159% (presently known flora: 484 taxa); Umbria, 455% (261 taxa); Abruzzo, 76% (589 taxa); Molise (305 taxa); Puglia, 48% (566 taxa); Basilicata, 115% (464 taxa). Fourteen taxa (Anema moedligense, Arthonia anombrophila, Aspicilia desertorum, Caloplaca veneris, Cresporhaphis wienkampii, Dirina cretacea, lmmersaria uzbekica, Lecanora congesta, L. graeca, Lecidea albohyalina, Peccania salevensis, P. riruncula, Thelidium dionantense, and T. impressum) are new to the Italian lichen flora. Earlier hypotheses about a basic difference in the lichen floras of Western (Tyrrhenian) and Eastern (Adriatic) peninsular Italy, the former with a higher incidence of subtropical-suboceanic species, are confirmed by the new data.

Seventy-five infrageneric taxa of lichens are reported from the Dolomites (NE Italy, Tre Cime di Lavaredo). The samples were collected in two stations, one in the Alpine belt (2300-2400 rn), the other in the subalpine belt (1800m). Seventeen taxa are new to the Region of Veneto; eight of these are also new lo the lichen flora of ltaly: these are: Caloplaca isidiigera Vezda, Candelariella unilocularis (Elenk.) comb. nov., Candelariella plumbea Poelt & Vezda. Eiglera homalomorpha (Nyl.) Clauz. & Roux, Farnoldia jurana ssp. bicincta (Hertel) Clauz. & Roux, Lecanora meolansii B. de Lesd., Verrucaria zamenhofiana Clauz. & Roux., Xanthoria elegans v. orbicularis (Schaerer) Clauz. & Roux.

This study is based on measurements of radiocesium and potassium-40 in leaves, stems and roots of 48 vascular plants in a natural beech forest in the Carnic Alps (NE Italy). The data have been submitted to numerical classification, and the main results are: (a) radiocontamination patterns and ecology of the species are well related, (b) three main groups of species with different radiocontamination can be distinguished: plants in clearings, forest plants rooting in the organic soil layer, forest plants rooting in the mineral layer; (c) radiocesium tends to be retained in the roots, especially in plants in the clearings; (d) Pteridophytes, contrary to all other plants, are able to discriminate between cesium and potassium at leaf level; (e) for all other species, cesium and potassium, once taken up by the plant, exhibit a similar behaviour; (f) total contamination by radiocesium is related to the depth of the root systems, and to the unequal distribution of radiocesium in the soil profile. Species-specific mechanisms of differential absorption are not evident in the investigated forest; the radiocontamination of plants can be easily explained in ecological terms. Radiocontamination on a water basis (Bq/l) is suggested as being much more appropriate for solving certain radioecological problems.

This paper presents a numerical analysis of the distribution patterns in Europe and adjoining regions of 242 vascular plant species occurring in the Italian beech forests. The classification of a matrix of species and of 531 Operational Geographic Units (OGUs) led to recognition of 15 different phytogeographic elements (chorotypes). The joint distribution of the species belonging to each chorotype is shown by a chorogram, which is a geographic map obtained by computer processing of the distributional data. Some of the chorograms show the main distributional centers for the beechwood flora in southern Europe: northwestern Balkan Peninsula and eastern Alps, southern Balkan Peninsula, Maritime Alps, northern Apennines, southern Apennines. Only 20% of the species are limited to narrow areas in southern Europe, and were not able to expand considerably their ranges in postglacial times. Migration from the refugia and colonization of vast areas in central and northern Europe led to intensive speciation phenomena, occurring chiefly through the formation of neopolyploid species. Several south European, narrow-ranging species, can be considered as palaeopolyploids with relict character. There is a good relationship between distribution and ecology of the chorotypes.

The phytogeography of the genus Allium in Siberia and Mongolia is described, based on the numerical classification of a matrix of 56 species and 769 Operational Geographic Uniis (OGUs). Two main diversity centers can be detected, the Altai-Tuva region and southeastern Siberia, which can be further subdivided into 4 subcenters: Altai Mts., Tuva Mts., southern Baikal and Dahuria. The first three subcenters. located in southern Siberia, are rich in endemic species, which are mostly bound to semi-arid environments such as montane steppes and alpine vegetation. These old, isolated mountain ranges constitute the main refugial centers for the Allium flora of Siberia and Mongolia. The Tuva subcenter, rich in endemics and poor in polyploid species, seems to be the most conservative area; the south Baikal region, much richer in polyploid species, appears as an important center af speciation.

In biology, proper identification is fundamental to retrieve information linked to the name of an organism. Digital identification keys can be easier than the traditional paper-printed keys. However, like the latter, they often cannot be modified by users. A research group of the European Project KeyToNature has developed a new open source software, the KeyToNature Open Key Editor, which permits to easily add digital user-generated content to almost any digital dichotomous or polytomous key with the use of any common web browser. The most interesting features of the Key Editor are discussed together with some of the possible scenarios in which it can be used.

After a brief historical survey of the developments of vegetation science in general, and of lichen community studies in particular, this paper presents critical comments on some of the main methodological problems in the study of lichen vegetation, with particular regard to the phytosociological approach. It is suggested that in the description and classification of lichen communities lichenologists should avoid the inflation of community names that characterize the present state of the phytosociology of phanerogamic vegetation. This can be accomplished on the basis of a sound methodological approach, where the use of numerical methods can play a major role.

Lichens epiphytic on olive trees were used as biomonitors of sulphur dioxide pollution in La Spezia (Northern Italy). The method adopted was designed to avoid subjectivity at all stages, from the sampling strategy to data analysis. Thus, lichen data are expressed by an index that does not depend on any sensitivity scale; data analysis relies on multivariate methods of classification and ordination, and the pollution maps have been produced by automatic mapping programmes. The index, based on the frequency of species within a sampling grid, showed a very high statistical correlation with pollution data measured by recording gauges. The results of classification and ordination indicate that Parmelia caperata is the species with a distribution best related to the lichen index. The quality of air pollution data obtained from biomonitors is discussed.

Summary 252 samples of lichens of the Cladonia chlorophaea—pyxidata complex collected in Italy were analyzed by thin layer chromatography. Six chemospecies occur in Italy; they are: Cladonia chlorophaea s.str. (80.9% of the samples), throughout the Peninsula, Cladonia grayi (4.0%) restricted to mountain areas on acid substrate in the North, Cladonia merochlorophaea (5.5%) and Cladonia cryptochlorophaea (2.4%), most frequent in Central Italy, at the western side of the peninsula, Cladonia conoidea (5.5%) most frequent in Central and Southern Italy, in lowlands and within mediterranean vegetation, Cladonia perlomera (1.6%), very rare throughout the country. Five of the six chemospecies are new to Italy; one (C. perlomera) is new to Europe. The higher frequency of C. chlorophaea s.str. is probably due to the fact that this is the only chemospecies within the complex that grows on limestone soils.

This study is based on a phytosociological table and a matrix of species and morphological characters. The releves were taken along a transect in a Myrica faya-Erica arborea formation on Tenerife (Canary Islands). The analysis of the phytosociological table reveals a vegetational succession and a corresponding ecological gradient. The study of correlations between morphological and ecological data leads to the creation of groups of species with different combinations of characters, and to a discussion of the adaptive values of each character combination. The species of each group occupy similar niches.

Data source: Centrai Databank of the ltalian flora and vegetation. Database: phanerogamic flora of Sicily; percents of species with similar distribution patterns, subdivided into 49 phytogeographical categories, in 23 elevation intervals of 100m each. Methods: Complete Linkage Clustering with Correlation Coefficient far the classification of categories and of elevation intervals; Concentration Analysis far the ordination. Results: species with similar distribution tend to be most frequent along given sections of the elevation gradient. The degree of correlation between phytogeographical categories and elevation has been quantified.

On the basis of a numerical classification of 85 phytosociological releves, 11 unions of epiphytic lichen vegetation are described for the Province of Trieste. Their ecology and dynamics are discussed. The results confirm the transitional character of the study area from the phytogeographical and phytosociological points of wiew.

A project-independent data model for the entire range of karyological information provides a comprehensive picture of all data items presently used in karyological research and characterizes their logical inter-relation. It is presented in the form of a hierarchical decomposition of the subject matter down to attribute-level data items. The applied analytical methods are relevant for the structuring of information in other branches of biology. Only sporadic and inconsistent efforts have previously been made to make the huge amount of available karyological information accessible in electronic form. In the view of growing demand for the availability of scientific data on computer networks, fnrther attempts are to be expected presently. The present data model provides a framework for the design of individual databases and ensures compatibility of the resulting datasets.
