Abstract

KM3NeT will be a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector, to be installed at the Capo Passero site (Italy), is optimised for the detection of high-energy neutrinos of cosmic origin. Thanks to its geographical location on the Northern hemisphere, KM3NeT/ARCA can observe upgoing neutrinos from most of the Galactic Plane, including the Galactic Centre. Given its effective area and excellent pointing resolution, KM3NeT/ARCA will measure or significantly constrain the neutrino flux from potential astrophysical neutrino sources. At the same time, it will test flux predictions based on gamma-ray measurements and the assumption that the gamma-ray flux is of hadronic origin. Assuming this scenario, discovery potentials and sensitivities for a selected list of Galactic sources and to generic point sources with an E −2 spectrum are presented. These spectra are assumed to be time independent. The results indicate that an observation with 3σ significance is possible in about six years of operation for the most intense sources, such as Supernovae Remnants RX J1713.7-3946 and Vela Jr. If no signal will be found during this time, the fraction of the gamma-ray flux coming from hadronic processes can be constrained to be below 50% for these two objects. © 2019 The Authors

Abstract

Research shows that the monoclonal antibody 15B3 recognizes disease-specific forms of the ubiquitous cellular prion protein PrP(super C). Scientists believe that 15B3 will be useful in establishing a technique to diagnose transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). TSEs including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are hard to diagnose using current techniques. The PrP(super Sc)-specific epitope molecule is described.

Abstract

Researchers have assessed whether the amplitude and frequency characteristics of microvibration (MV) and postural tremor (PT) sensitively depend on muscle stiffness and viscoelastic coupling in their multilimb systems. Microgravity was used to assess MV and PT in a cosmonaut before, during and after an eight-day space flight. It was found that muscle tone and elastic skeletal coupling have a significant impact on amplitude and frequency of both MV and PT.

Abstract

The circadian rhythms and sleep patterns are altered in mice lacking the prion protein (PrP), indicating that the loss of PrP results in neurological malfunction. The inherited prion disease fatal familial insomnia is related to the loss of the normal function of PrP. The period of activity of the circadian activity in transgenic mice is longer than that in wild-type mice and shorter than that in null PrP mutant mice.

Abstract

A versatile and simple to use biomedical instrumentation for noninvasive examinations of cosmonauts at the Russian MIR space station was developed. It consists of a comfortable sensor jacket to assess signals from the body surface, a precision hand dynamometer to produce muscular and cardiovascular loads, and a small interactive microprocessor unit that controls the examination and stores measurement data. The sensor jacket includes highly sensitive piezo-resistive accelerometers, pulse sensors, an ECG system, and a skin-mountable mechanical vibrator. The functionality of this instrumentation was evaluated during long-term space flights and also proved very useful in laboratory and clinical studies.

Abstract

The serine protease high-temperature-required protein A2 (HtrA2) has been identified as a key intracellular molecule promoting apoptosis in cells during ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury. IR injury in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) contributes to overall myocardial damage. HtrA2 has further been shown to be significantly increased in the serum of patients with STEMI. In the present pilot study, we use human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to investigate whether extracellular HtrA2 induces apoptosis using Annexin V staining. Furthermore, we examine whether HtrA2 is released extracellularly after staurosporine-induced apoptosis using ELISA. We find that HtrA2 is released upon induction of apoptosis by staurosporine into the cell culture medium. Furthermore, treatment of HUVECs with extracellular HtrA2-induces apoptosis, while the addition of anti-HtrA2 antibodies reduces both HtrA2- and staurosporine-induced endothelial cell apoptosis. In conclusion, we show here that extracellular HtrA2 induces apoptosis in human endothelial cells, although the exact molecular mechanisms have to be investigated in future.

Abstract

Zusammenfassung: Hintergrund: Frauen im Klimakterium beschreiben die Zunahme ihres Körpergewichts als eine der belastendsten Veränderungen während des menopausalen Übergangs. Studienlage: Diverse Studien bestätigen, dass während der hormonellen Umstellung das Gesamtkörpergewicht durchschnittlich ansteigt. Studienergebnisse, die sich auf moderne Verfahren der Bildgebung stützen, deuten darauf hin, dass diese Gewichtszunahme insbesondere auf eine Akkumulation von viszeralem Fettgewebe zurückzuführen ist. Des Weiteren gibt es Hinweise darauf, dass eine Hormonersatztherapie dieser Entwicklung entgegenwirkt.
