Five and four males paratypes with the same locality data as the below paratypes specimens are deposited in the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) and Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP), respectively. Malacophagomyia filamenta (Dodge, 1963) (Figs 1, 4, 7, 10– 16) Sarcophaga filamenta Dodge, 1963: 240. Holotype male (AMNH; not examined). Type locality: Surinam (as “ Dutch Guiana ”), Paramaribo. Male (Fig. 7). Body length = 6.2 –7.0 mm (n = 82). Head. Head length at antennal base 1.13 head length at vibrissal level. Parafacial and fronto-orbital plate with silvery microtomentum (Fig. 1); parafacial plate with setae (somewhat larger on lower part) and row of setulae on upper half; fronto-orbital plate with sparse setulae; postcranium with silvery-gray microtomentum, with row of black occipital setae parallel to postorbitals and whitish setulae; eye bare; frontal vitta blackish; front at its narrowest point 0.21 head width; 6–10 frontal setae, the row of frontals not diverging strongly anteriorly at the level of pedicel; reclinate orbital setae present; inner vertical setae strong and reclinate, outer vertical setae 0.25– 0.3 X the inner verticals and divergent; ocellar triangle black with silvery microtomentum, with one pair of divergent and proclinate ocellar setae and supplementary setulae; postocellar and paravertical setae present; postocular area with silvery microtomentum; genal groove and genal dilation with silvery microtomentum; postgena with silvery-gray microtomentum and pale setae, gena with a few black setae anteriorly and pale setae on posterior part; face with silvery microtomentum; facial ridge with silvery microtomentum, with setae and stronger setulae close to vibrissa and fine setulae reaching the lower half; 9–11 subvibrissal setae; antenna brown, postpedicel with grayish microtomentum, length 0.29 head height, arista largely plumose; palpus brown with black setae on apical half. Black, with silvery-gray microtomentum; prescutum and scutum with dorsal and lateral stripes with silvery-gray microtomentum and three black bands; scutellum with intermediate stripes with silvery-gray; postpronotal lobe, notopleuron and anepisternum, katepisternum and anepimeron with spots of silvery-gray microtomentum; proepisternum silvery, bare; one strong proepisternal seta plus one weaker and shorter supplementary inferior seta, three katepisternal setae, postalar wall with setulae. Chaetotaxy: acrostichals 0+0, dorsocentrals 4 (not well differentiated, usually the presutural more developed in length) + 4 (spaced to four, the two anterior setae smaller than the posteriors and usually not differentiated), intra-alars 2 + 2, supra-alars 1–2 + 3 (the middle pair stronger), anterior postpronotal 1, basal postpronotal 2, postalars 2, notopleurals 4 (two larger and two smaller). Scutellum with two pairs of lateral scutellar setae, apical scutellar setae absent, and a pair of discal setae. Wing hyaline, tegula dark brown, whitish basicosta and brown veins, vein R 1 basally setulose on 1 / 2 of its length, R 4 + 5 setulose in proximal 0.6 of distance to crossvein r-m, costal spine not differentiated, third costal sector with ventral setae, cell r 4 + 5 open at wing apex, lower calypter whitish. Legs with coxae, trochanters and femora with silvery microtomentum; middle femur without posteroventral ctenidium on its apical portion, 2–4 anterior and 2–4 anteroventral setae; middle tibia with 1 anterodorsal seta; hind femur with rows of anterodorsal and anteroventral setae; hind tibia with 2 anterodorsal setae well differentiated, 1 anteroventral, and 2 posterodorsal setae; hind femur somewhat villous basally; tarsi blackish. Abdomen. Reddish-brown; sternites exposed with silvery microtomentum; T 1 + 2 –T 5 with latero-ventral and dorsal spots with silvery microtomentum; T 1 + 2 –T 4 each with one pair of lateral marginal setae, T 4 with one pair of median marginal setae; T 5 with a complete row of marginal setae; ST 2 –ST 3 (and adjacent areas of tergites) with lateral villous setae; ST 4 with tufts of black spine-like setae on posterior corners, bare medially; median margin of ST 5 V-shaped, reddish-brown; arm of ST 5 with several fine setae on its inner surface, and a darkened short posterior lobe (Fig. 4). Genitalia. Syntergosternite 7 + 8 blackish, with a median spot of gray microtomentum, having a marginal row of weak setae and some smaller black hair-like setae basally; epandrium reddish-orange with thin gray microtomentum, with black hair-like setae; cerci short, covered with setae, without cercal prong (Fig. 12); cerci slightly curved in profile (Fig. 13); surstylus long with apical setae (Fig. 13); pregonite curved backward, bent at a right angle and pointed (Fig. 10); postgonite with one strong seta (Fig. 11); phallus without vesica; juxta well developed and sclerotized, curved upward at the anterior margin (lateral view), juxta bifid in ventral (or apical) view; lateral stylus well developed and complex with a pair of arms or processes, a lateral (outer) membranous arm, and a well-sclerotized curved inner arm (Fig. 14); median stylus very elongated, strongly curved at the base and in apical third (lateral view); each harpes as a flat and membranous lobe (Fig. 14). Female. Body length = 5.5–7.2 mm (n = 57). Head. Differs from male in being wider, front at its narrowest point 0.35 head width; two well differentiated proclinate orbital setae; postpedicel larger, length 0.34 head height. Thorax. Similar to male. Hind femur with 2–3 posteroventral setae. Abdomen. Similar to male, somewhat broader. Genitalia. Tergite 6 (VI + VII of Lopes) reduced to a narrow sclerotized band with anterior margin adjacent to spiracle 7 (located in a large membranous area); epiproct (or anal tergite) membranous and represented by a few setae, cerci with setae (Fig. 16). ST 5 long and narrow; ST 6 and ST 7 united but with a distinct streak between them, with rows of marginal setae especially laterally, and with a concave longitudinal median area; ST 8 composed of two lateral plates, rounded on posterior margin, covered with microtrichiae and a membranous median area with setae on posterior part; vaginal plate conspicuous and well sclerotized, broad and exposed on posterior margin; hypoproct membranous, broad with longer setulae on posterior margin (Fig. 15). Material examined. Bolivia: 69 males, 47 females, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, XII 56 M. Alvarenga leg. (MNRJ). Brazil: 5 males, Belem, Pará, 25.VIII. 65 H.S. Lopes leg. Bolivia, Brazil (Pará, Rio de Janeiro), Surinam. Remarks. Lopes (1966: 319) described for the first time the female of M. filamenta and defined the genital tergites as “Tergito 6 + 7 inteiramente ausente, representado pelos dois estigmas que se implantam na membrana, havendo um único tergito genital constituído por estreita faixa quitinosa que corresponde ao 9 ° esternito [sic]…”. Lopes (1966: 318, figs 9–10) illustrated this species, although without specifying any structures. We observed that the unique and narrow sclerotization is located in a posterior position but adjacent to spiracle 7, and hence we assume that this structure constitutes the posterior remains of tergite 6 (VI + VII according to Lopes’s usual nomenclature). Following the description of the female, Lopes (1966) provided interpretations of the functional morphology of male and female structures of the genitalia based on a fixed mating couple.

Malacophagomyia kesselringi Kano & Lopes, 1968 (Figs 2, 5, 8 –9, 17– 21) Malacophagomyia kesselringi Kano & Lopes, 1968: 303 (male, distribution, figs 1–5; Brazil, Paraiba, João Pessoa, Chaves Farm); Pape, 1996: 249 (catalog). Male (Fig. 8). Body length = 6.3–6.5 mm (n = 3). Character states are the same as in the previous description except as follows. Head. Head length at antennal base 1.08 head length at vibrissal level. Parafacial and fronto-orbital plate with silvery microtomentum (Fig. 2); parafacial plate with row of setulae on upper half; frontal vitta dark brown; front at its narrowest point 0.22 head width; 6–7 frontal setae, outer vertical setae 0.3 X the inner verticals and divergent; genal groove and genal dilation with silvery microtomentum; 8–9 subvibrissal setae; antenna brown, postpedicel with grayish microtomentum, length 0.28 head height; palpus brown with black setae on apical half. Thorax. Scutellum with intermediate stripes with silvery-gray microtomentum; postpronotal lobe, notopleuron and anepisternum, katepisternum and anepimeron with spots of silvery-gray microtomentum. Chaetotaxy: dorsocentrals 3–4 (not well differentiated) + 4 (spaced to four, the two anterior setae smaller than the posteriors), intra-alars 2 + 2, supra-alars 1 + 3 (the middle pair stronger). Wing hyaline, tegula dark brown, whitish basicosta and brown veins, R 1 basally setulose on 1 / 2 of its length, R 4 + 5 setulose in proximal 0.6 of distance to crossvein r-m. Legs with middle femur with 2–3 anterior and 2–4 anteroventral setae; middle tibia with 1–2 anterdorsal setae; hind femur with rows of anterodorsal, anterior and anteroventral setae; hind tibia with 2 anterodorsal setae well differentiated, 1 anteroventral, and 2 posterodorsal setae; middle and hind femora somewhat villous basally; tarsi brown. Abdomen. Reddish-brown; sternites exposed with silvery microtomentum; T 1 + 2 –T 5 with latero-ventral and dorsal spots with silvery microtomentum; ST 2 –ST 3 (and adjacent areas of tergites) with lateral villous setae; ST 4 with a pair or tuft of black spine-like setae on posterior corners, bare medially; ST 5 V-shaped, reddish-brown, arms of ST 5 with tufts of strong black spine-like setae on its inner surface, and two long posterior lobes (Fig. 5). Genitalia. Syntergosternite 7 + 8 red, with a median spot of silver-yellowish microtomentum, having a marginal row of weak setae and some smaller black hair-like setae basally; epandrium reddish-orange with black hair-like setae; cerci long and narrowed in dorsal view, villous only on upper half margins, fused along its entire length with vestigial cercal prong (Fig. 19); cerci straight in profile (Fig. 20); surstyli small with rounded tip and villous setae (Fig. 20); pregonite strongly curved backward and pointed (Fig. 17); postgonite with one strong seta (Fig. 18); phallus without vesica; juxta (or apical plate) well developed and sclerotized, curved upward at the anterior margin (lateral view), juxta bifid in ventral (or apical) view (Fig. 21); lateral styli well developed and complex, composed of two arms or processes, a lateral (outer) membranous arm, and a well-sclerotized short inner arm (Fig. 21); median stylus greatly elongated and curved (lateral view), emerging dorsally to harpes; harpes well differentiated, sclerotized and pointed (Fig. 21). The holotype is in good condition, genitalia spread and totally exposed. Male paratype (MNRJ),“João Pessoa / Paraiba Br. Oswaldo Cruz [printed on white paper]” The paratype has its abdomen partly extracted, structures of genitalia are dissected and cleared on a slide, otherwise in good condition. One slide, with abdominal ST 3–5, pieces of abdominal tergites, cerci, and surstyli, phallus, pregonite, and postgonite belonging to the paratype, “N. [printed] 11.430 cx 192 [handwritten] / Diptera / Inst. Oswaldo Cruz [printed]” // “nr. 11.430 / cx. 192 ”. Other material examined. Brazil: 1 male, from Pommacea sp., Pacatuba, Ceará, 350 m, 23 -VII- 1983, C.D. Freitas & H.C. Hime (MNRJ). Distribution. Brazil (Ceará, Paraiba). Remarks. This species is externally similar to M. filamenta but differs in male genital morphology. Particularly, the shape of cerci, pregonite, and ST 5 provide good diagnostic characters to separate these species. The rearing record of M. kesselringi obtained from Pomacea sp. is the first biological data obtained for this species.

The small Neotropical genus Malacophagomyia Lopes is revised. Two previously recorded species from tropical South America are redescribed: M. filamenta (Dodge) and M. kesselringi Kano & Lopes. One new species is described, M. rivadavia sp. nov., from temperate southern South America. The structures of the male genitalia of the species of this genus are compared, and some female genitalic structures of M. filamenta are reinterpreted. Stylogaster hugoi sp. nov. (Figs 6–17) Diagnosis — body color mainly yellow; facial carina forming a right angle with the fronto-orbital plate; thick postpronotal lobes; white setae covering the foreleg to second tarsomere; male sternite 5 with central projection and cerci wider than posterior surstyli; female terminalia with lateral lobes as wide as the hypoproct, and small semicircular indentation in sternite 8. Male Description. Head —Frons mainly brown, with yellow apex; facial carina reaching the fronto-orbital plate in a right angle (Fig. 6); facial carina and gena yellow with golden microtomentum; fronto-orbital plate narrow; prementum black with base and apex yellow; basal sheath of prementum well developed and visible and spiral labella (Fig. 6, bs; lb); ocellar triangle brown; apex of ocellar triangle pointed, reaching the middle of the frons; ocellar tubercle prominent; the head setae are: 1 vertical, 1 ocellar, 1 occipital, 1 frontal and 3 orbital; some setulae near the facial carina (Fig. 7); occipital and genal setae white; scape and pedicel yellow; postpedicel light brown; scape with apical setulae on dorsal face; pedicel with setulae on all dorsal surface; pedicel and postpedicel of subequal size; arista enlarged at the base. Thorax —Postpronotal lobe thick; proepisternum invaginated; notopleuron as large as the postpronotal lobe, with the suture strongly demarcated; postalar callus narrower than the scutellum (Fig. 8); scutum light brown, yellowish on the margins; scutellum narrow and upwards pointing; postscutellum large, reaching half depth of the thorax; pleural sclerites yellow; proepisternal setae white; all other setae are black: 2 notopleural, 1 supra-alar, 2 postalar, 1 dorsocentral, 2 anepimeral and 1 scutellar seta (Fig. 8). Terminalia —Terminalia mainly yellow; sternite 5 with central projection and black setulae on the posterior margin (Fig. 10); syntergosternite 7 + 8 with half the width of the epandrium (Fig. 11); cercus wider than posterior surstylus, with a hooked apex and black setae on the posterior margin and basal half of the external side (Fig. 11, ce); posterior surstylus with the anterior lobe smaller than posterior, with black spines on the internal side, and posterior lobe in a right angle with the posterior surstylus, white setae on the posterior margin and on the posterior lobe (Fig. 11, su); pregonite reaching the apex of basiphallus, with dense setae on the internal side (Fig. 11, pgt); phallus pale with brown regions; basiphallus membranous; distiphallus with internal sclerotized channels, chordiform concave opening, and membranous apical projection (Fig. 11, ph); ejaculatory apodeme smaller than the sperm duct, with sperm pump nearly of the same size of the apodeme (Fig. 12). Female Description. Differs from the male by having: Compound eye with ommatidia of the central inner margin more than twice the size of the others; 1 notopleural seta; 2 supra-alars; fore and mid legs with white straight-pointed setae on the coxae; two fore and one mid white tibial spurs; hind tibial spur black; no long setulae on hind leg; abdominal tergite 1 with white setae on inferior half; tergite 2 with other differentiated setae than those of the transversal line; “ovipositor” of similar size to the abdomen; tergites 6 and 7 with dorsal setulae (Fig. 13); sternite 8 with setae over all length, and reclinate setae on the apical third (Figs. 14–16); cercus nearly of the same width but with half the length of the lateral lobes of sternite 8 (Fig. 15, ce); lateral lobes of sternite 8 with almost the same size of the hypoproct, without horizontal curvature (Fig. 16, eg); apex of syntergosternite 8 + 9 with a small semicircular indentation (Fig. 16). Egg Description. Elongated chorion; two pairs of sclerotized and united recurrent spines; posterior spine conical (Fig. 17). Etymology. This species is named in honor of the Brazilian dipterist Dr. Hugo de Souza Lopes, who worked with Neotropical Stylogaster and published several works of great quality. Distribution. Stylogaster macrura Lopes Stylogaster macrura Lopes, 1938: 403. Type locality: Brazil, São Paulo, Campos do Jordão, Eng. Lefèvre, 1200m. This species is known only by females, which can easily be distinguished by the long “ovipositor” which is at least three times as long as the abdomen. It was previously known from only three specimens from municipalities of the São Paulo and Santa Catarina states in the Southeast and South regions of Brazil, respectively (Camras & Parrillo, 1985). In contrast, the new records are from the Caatinga, a much warmer and dryer biome than the previously known records at high altitude subtropical forests with lower average temperature, indicating that the species has a broader distribution and a greater ecological plasticity. Stylogaster souzai Monteiro (Figs 1–5) Stylogaster souzai Monteiro, 1960: 111. Type locality: Brazil, Amapá, Mazagão, “do Jari ao Vila Nova”. This species was previously known only from Amazonian Forest in the states of Amapá and Pará (Monteiro, 1960; Camras & Parrillo, 1985; Camras & Parrillo, 1996). This provides the first record for northeastern Brazil. The female and egg are herein described for the first time. Males with the same collecting data were identified by comparison with the holotype. Male. Diagnosis —Pedicel longer than the postpedicel; mid tibia with one white spur; two basal setae on wings; tergite 1 with a series of white and black setae; sternite 5 with sparse setulae and a slight indentation on the posterior margin; phallus with two narrow apical membranous projections. Female Description. Ocellar triangle pointed, reaching middle of the frons, frons entirely brown; scutum brown with paler longitudinal strips, anepisternum brown; segments VI and VII yellow with dorsal brown spot; sternite 8 brown with yellow lateral spot; fore tibia with one white spur; no spur on mid tibia; no long setae on inferior face of the hind leg; hind tibial spur black; tergite 1 only with white setae on the inferior half; “ovipositor” nearly as long as abdomen; tergites 6 and 7 with setae only on the superior half (Fig. 1); sternite 8 with setulae covering almost all extension (Figs. 2–4), ventral face with one pair of apical reclinate and some differentiated proclinate setae, and a median elevation on its basal half (Fig. 4); cercus narrowed on the base and length not reaching the hypoproct (Fig. 3, ce); lateral lobes of sternite 8 in internal position relative to the lateral sides of syntergostergite, thinner than cerci and reaching half of the hypoproct (Fig. 3, eg); apex of lateral lobes of sternite 8 rounded; apex of “ovipositor” with a characteristic indentation (Fig. 4). (Figs 18–32) Diagnosis— Facial keel subtriangular; ocellar tubercle prominent; mid trochanter with a set of long black setae; mid tarsomeres 2 to 4 flattened and covered with dense black setae; male with sternite 5 with sclerotized posterior margin and laterally grouped setae, bilobate pregonite, and sperm duct longer than the whole abdomen; female with lateral lobes of sternite 8 curved and crossing at the apex. Male Description Head —Frons brown; facial keel with subtriangular shape (Fig. 18); facial keel, orbit and gena with silver microtomentum; ocellar triangle yellowish; apex of ocellar triangle rounded, reaching the lunule; ocellar tubercle brown and prominent; head setae are: 1 vertical; 1 ocellar; 2 differentiated occipital; 2 frontal; 4 orbital (Fig. 19); occipital and genal setae white; prementum black with yellow filiform labella; scape and pedicel yellow; postpedicel light brown; scape with tiny setulae on the superior apical margin; pedicel with setulae on the apical two thirds; pedicel and postpedicel of subequal size; arista with enlarged base (Fig. 18). Two new Neotropical species of the genus Oxysarcodexia Townsend (Diptera, Sarcophagidae). Oxysarcodexia nitida sp. nov. and O. notata sp. nov. from Peru are described and illustrated based on male specimens. These new taxa are morphologically more similar to O. vittata (Walker) and O. xon (Dodge) respectively. Oxysarcodexia nitida sp. nov. e O. notata sp. nov. do Peru são descritas e ilustradas com base em espécimes machos. Esses novos táxons são morfologicamente mais similares a O. vittata (Walker) e O. xon (Dodge), respectivamente.

As espécies brasileiras de Stylogaster Macquart, 1835 do grupo stylata são detalhadamente estudadas e redescritas: Stylogaster brasilia Camras & Parrillo, 1985, S. dispar Camras & Parrillo, 1985, S. longispina Camras & Parrillo, 1985, S. rafaeli Camras & Parrillo, 1996, S. souzai Monteiro, 1960, and S. stylata (Fabricius, 1805). Uma nova espécie do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro - S. fluminensis sp. nov., é descrita e comparada com S. stylosa Townsend, 1897, redescrita com base no material-tipo. Diagnoses, chaves de identificação, distribuição geográfica e ilustrações são também fornecidas. The snake was kept in captivity in a snake farm in Morungaba, São Paulo state, Brazil. Engelimyia qibos Pape & Mello­Patiu, sp. nov. Figs 31–38, 42 Etymology The species epithet qibos is an anagram of bosqi, thereby stressing the similarity and possible sister­group relationship between the present species and Engelimyia bosqi. The name should be treated as a noun in aposition. Type material Holotype 1 ♂, COSTA RICA: Prov. Limón, Valle La Estrella, 100 m, 19–29.iv. 1992, E. Lopez, INBIO 716300 (INBio). Description of adult male Like E. bosqi but differing by the following: Head: Frontal row of 9–11 bristles; outer vertical bristle not differentiated from postocular setae and about 0.25 x as long as inner vertical bristle; arista long plumose in basal 0.65. Thorax: Meropleurals 8–10; mid femur with a row of 3–4 median anterior bristles and 1–2 median anteroventral. Abdomen: ST 5 with median part not or very slightly raised, outline of posterior half almost triangular but rounded posteriorly (Fig. 35). Anterior margin almost straight, postero­lateral lobes rounded and not particularly broad (Fig. 36). Terminalia: Cercus with distinct subapical dorsal hump and the tip bent at about 45 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis; with long setae on mid lateral margin (Fig. 33). Dorsal margin gently sinuous. Cerci in posterior view symmetrical and with a median common projection. Surstylus with strongly sinuous anterior (or ventral) margin so as to appear restricted in the middle (Fig. 34). Pregonite broad at base, with a strongly sinuous basal margin, about as long as postgonite, and distal half perpendicular to basal half. Postgonite with gently curved tip, a strong median bristle on anterior margin and a smaller one just distal to this (Fig. 37). Phallic tube with a median, tapering projection of the anterior (or ventral) margin; juxta shaped as a pair of long, curving posterior apophyses reaching almost to the tip of the membranous apical structure, which is restricted at base and with entire surface spinose; vesica with spinose surface, almost quadrate in lateral view but with anterior surface sinuous; lateral styli with base only slightly expanded (Figs 38, 42). Key to species of Engelimyia (males only) 1. Sternite 5 with median part at most slightly raised, in lateral view with a blunt angle between anterior and posterior halves and posterior half with a more or less triangular appearance (Figs 5, 35). Surstylus simple apically (Figs 4, 34). Pregonite with strongly curved, uninterrupted dorsal margin and simple tip (Figs 7, 37).................................. 2 ­ Sternite 5 with median part abruptly raised, in lateral view with a right angle between anterior and posterior halves and posterior half more rectangular or quadratic than triangular (Figs 13, 27). Surstylus apically bifid, either very clearly (Fig. 12) or more concealed when the division is in the sagittal plane (Fig. 26). Sarcophaga cassidifera: Lopes (1969, in part: catalogue, first appearance of synonymy). Description of adult male Body length: 12–19 mm. Head: Fronto­orbital and parafacial plates and postocular strip with golden microtrichosity. Parafacial plate with very short, fine setae all along eye margin. Frontal vitta black or dark brown; frons at vertex 0.20 x head width; frontal row of 8–11 bristles; one reclinate and no proclinate orbital bristles; outer vertical bristle not differentiated from postocular setae and about 0.25 x as long as inner vertical bristle. Gena and postgena with light golden microtrichosity. Antenna black to dark brown; first flagellomere about 2.5 x as long as pedicel; arista long plumose in basal 0.7. Palpus and proboscis black to dark brown. Thorax: Chaetotaxy: acrostichals 0+ 1, intra­alars 1 + 2 (posterior ca. 2 x the anterior), supra­alars 2 + 3, postpronotals 2, postalars 2, notopleurals 4 (2 strong primary setae and 2 short subprimaries intercalated), scutellum with marginal bristles 2, apicals 1 (crossed in distal half or 1 / 3), discals 1 (shorter than apical), meropleurals 9–10, katepisternals 3 (in a line, middle one very weak), prosternum setose on posterior 3 / 4, metasternum setose, proepimeron setose, postalar wall setose. Wing hyaline, vein R 1 bare, R 4 + 5 setulose dorsally halfway to crossvein r­m, costal spine not differentiated, third costal sector without ventral setae. Legs black; mid tibia with 1 median anterodorsal and 1 median posterodorsal bristles, numerous bristles along all ventral surface; mid femur with a row of 2–4 median anterior bristles, 2–3 median anteroventral, 2 preapical posterior bristles, without ctenidium; hind tibia with 1 sub­basal, 1 median and 1 preapical bristles on both anterodorsal and posterodorsal margins, 1 median anteroventral bristle, numerous bristles on ventral surface, denser and longer than on mid tibia; hind femur with rows of bristles along anterior, anterodorsal and anteroventral surface/margins, 2–3 posterodorsal bristles in the apical half and 1 subapical on posterior surface; hind coxa with dense bristles on anterior surface and few setulae on posterior surface. Abdomen: T 4 with 1 pair of median marginals and 3 strong lateral marginal bristles; T 5 with 12–14 marginal bristles; ST 5 with median part not raised, outline of posterior half triangular in lateral view (Fig. 5). Anterior margin deeply U­shaped, postero­lateral lobes rounded and not particularly broad (Fig. 6). Terminalia: Cercus straight in profile, with scattered setae on mid lateral margin and with an abruptly rounded or truncated apex (Figs 2, 3), dorsal surface gently concave or almost straight. Cerci in posterior view symmetrical and with rounded or slightly triangular apices. Surstylus almost triangular but with slightly convex anterior (or ventral) margin (Fig. 4). Pregonite shorter than postgonite, deeply sinuous on basal margin, distal half perpendicular to basal half; postgonite with slightly curved apex, a median well developed bristle on anterior margin and a much smaller seta near apex (Fig. 7). Phallic tube with a median pointed projection of the ventral margin; a pair of conspicuous posterior apophyses (juxta) run along the posterior surface of a large, membranous apical structure with spines only on the anterior surface; vesica small, triangular in lateral view, and with spinose surface; lateral styli with base expanded into a large, curved, plate­like structure (Fig. 8). Engelimyia psino Pape & Mello­Patiu, sp. nov. Figs 23–30, 41 Sarcophaga cassidifera: Hall (1933), Dodge (1968); misidentification. Etymology The species epithet psino is an anagram of inops, thereby stressing the similarity and possible sister­group relationship between the present species and Engelimyia inops. Description of adult male Like E. bosqi but differing by the following: Head: Frons at vertex 0.22 x head width; frontal row of 11–12 bristles; arista long plumose in basal 0.75. Thorax: Meropleurals 8–9; mid femur with a row of 3–4 median anterior bristles and 1–2 median anteroventral. Abdomen: ST 5 with a conspicuous median projection, which in lateral view has an almost vertical anterior margin; outline of posterior half almost quadrate in lateral view, but with the ventral margin sinuous (Fig. 27). Anterior margin broadly U­shaped, postero­lateral lobes slender and almost parallel­sided at base (Fig. 28). Terminalia: Cercus with strong setae on mid lateral margin and small setulae apically, in profile with almost straight dorsal margin, without subapical dorsal hump, and with abruptly rounded or truncated apex (Fig. 25). Cerci in posterior view symmetrical and with the tip of each cercus slightly recurving laterally (Fig. 24). Surstylus with apex strongly modified into a large, saddle­like, bifurcated structure narrowly attached to the remaining surstylus; the two prongs of the tip distinctly visible in lateral view (Fig. 26). Surstylar base proximal to the bifurcated tip almost quadrate. Pregonite about as long as postgonite, straight, with very shallow concavity on basal margin and an apical notch; postgonite very slightly curved and with a strong bristle medially on anterior margin (Fig. 29). Phallic tube with ventro­lateral margin projecting into a rectangular structure with small spines distally (Figs 30, 41); juxta shaped as a pair of short, straight posterior apophyses almost hidden under the large, membranous apical structure, which is extensively spinose; vesica triangular in lateral view and with spinose proximal surface; lateral styli with base expanded into a large, gently curved, plate­like structure with its greatest width subapically (Figs 30, 41). Distribution Neotropical—Costa Rica, Panama. Remarks Hall (1933) mentioned two males of Sarcophaga cassidifera caught 5.vi. 1929 on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, by C.H. Curran, and Dodge (1968) referred to a single male of S. cassidifera also from Barro Colorado Island, “ 1.VII. 1956, no. 2254, sweeping in forest (KU)”. None of these specimens were located during the present study, but the material certainly belongs to E. psino as judged from the evidently bifid surstylus in the illustration made by Hall (1933, fig. 12).

Description of adult male Like E. bosqi but differing by the following: Head: Frons at vertex 0.24 x head width; frontal row of 9–14 bristles; outer vertical bristle not differentiated from postocular setae and about 0.20 x as long as inner vertical bristle; first flagellomere about 2.0 x as long as pedicel; arista long plumose in basal 0.65. Thorax: Meropleurals 9–11; mid femur with a row of 4–5 median anterior bristles and 1–3 median anteroventral. Abdomen: ST 5 with a conspicuous median projection, which in lateral view is distinctly recurving; outline of posterior half rectangular in lateral view, but with the ventral margin shallowly concave and the anterior margin recurving (Fig. 13). Anterior margin broadly U­shaped, posterolateral lobes broad and almost triangular (Fig. 14). Terminalia: Cercus bearing a set of strong setae on mid lateral margin and small spines and setulae apically, in profile with sinuous dorsal margin and with ovally rounded tip and distal part set at a blunt angle to the longitudinal axis (Fig. 11). Cerci in posterior view asymmetrical, with apico­median part of right cercus slightly overlapping its counterpart, tips slightly diverging (Fig. 10). Surstylus slightly concave on anterior (or ventral) margin (Fig. 12), with the tip bifid in the transverse plane, and lateral prong slightly shorter than median prong. Pregonite slightly longer than postgonite, shallowly sinuous on basal margin and with a notch or bifurcation along the posterior (or dorsal) margin, distal half set at about 45 degrees to the basal half; postgonite gently curved and with 2 well­developed bristles on anterior margin (Fig. 15). Phallic tube with anterior (ventral) margin sinuous but not particularly projecting; a pair of gently curved posterior apophyses (juxta), and a very large, membranous apical structure, which has spines that are particularly developed on the anterior surface; small vesica with the spinose proximal edges folded outwards; lateral styli with base expanded into a large, tongue­like structure (Figs 16, 17, 40). Remarks As listed above, the nominal taxon Sarcophaga inops has a female holotype. This raises a problem, as we cannot at this moment distinguish between females of Engelimyia. The nomenclatural implication of this is that we cannot reliably associate the namebearing type with any of the male­based species concepts. We have decided to accept the synonymy between inops and cassidifera because it has already been accepted and applied in the current world catalogue (Pape 1996) as well as in the online nomenclator of the Biosystematic Database of World Diptera (Thompson 2005), and the synonymy has not been questioned since its proposal by Lopes (1976). Walker (1849) gave no locality for his S. inops, and with no specific geographical provenance for the holotype, distributional information provides no clue as to which of the four species of Engelimyia should rightfully carry the name inops. Considering the wider distribution and the much more frequent appearance of the present species in scientific collections, and perhaps even the fact that very few nominal species were described by Walker from non­Mexican Central America, we consider the odds to be highest that the synonymy between the nominal taxa S. inops and S. cassidifera is correct. Lectotype designation: Engel (1931) described Sarcophaga cassidifera from a male and a female considered conspecific, but he obviously based his species concept mainly on the male, as this specimen was extensively described and illustrated, and even labelled (but not published) as “ Type ”. Subsequent authors (e.g., Pape 1996) have used the locality of this male as type locality, even if Engel did not designate the male as holotype, and no lectotype had subsequently been designated. We hereby designate the male as lectotype in order to fix unambiguously the identity of the nominal species Sarcophaga cassidifera E ngel, 1931 and to restrict the type locality. The specimen selected as lectotype is in good condition, with terminalia extended in situ, and it carries two labels: “El Cairo Boliv. VIII. 26. Lind. O. Chaco­Exped.” and a red label giving “ Type von S. cassidifera Engel ”. We have equipped the specimen with an additional, red label with “ LECTOTYPE ♂ Sarcophaga cassidifera Engel, Pape & Mello­Patiu det.”. The female syntype, which is in good condition, is labelled “Fortia Esteros Bolivia. III. 25. O. Chaco­Exped.” and a red label giving “ ParaType von Ψ S. cassidifera Engel. ”. It is herewith automatically designated as paralectotype and has been given a corresponding label. Identity: Peckia sp.

Terminalia – Syntergosternite 7 + 8, epandrium and cercus black with sparse yellowish gray microtomentum; epandrium with some differentiated dorsal bristles and syntergosternite 7 + 8 with 3 pairs of marginal bristles (according to Lopes 1974 c: 518); cercus curved forwards with pointed apex (Fig. 52); surstylus clavate with elongated base and apical setae (according to Lopes 1974 c: 518, fig. 34); gonopod curved, with enlarged base and pointed apex (Figs. 53, 54); paramere slightly curved, with narrow apex, and a strong median bristle on anterior margin (Figs. 53, 55); phallus with a small but distinct basiphallus, distiphallus membranous distally; juxta membranous, reduced, not completely protecting the stylar apices (Figs. 53, 56); lateral stylus long, with dentate and free apex, base bent outwards (Figs. 56, 57); median stylus long and sclerotized with free apex (Figs. 56, 57); vesica small and simple and with proximal region membranous (Figs. 56, 58). Female – unknown. Material examined – Panama. Barro Colorado Is., 1 male (holotype), 12.II. 1955, No 834, C. W. Rettenmeyer (SEM). Distribution – NEOTROPICAL – Panama. Remarks – The phallic structure of D. currani closely resembles that of D. avispaensis Mello, 1986, specifically by the reduced and membranous juxta, the long median stylus and the long lateral styli with bent base. The species is distinguished mainly by the smaller and more simple vesica.

Dexosarcophaga itaqua Dodge, 1966 (Figs. 1­8) Dexosarcophaga itaqua Dodge, 1966: 681. Type locality: Brazil, São Paulo, Itaquaquecetuba; male holotype, USNM. Male – Total length = 6 mm. Head – Fronto­orbital and parafacial plates gray with golden microtomentum, with a row of black setulae along eye margin; frontal vitta dark brown; frons 0.22 X head width; frontal row of 9 bristles; 1 reclinate fronto­orbital bristle, proclinate absent; outer vertical bristle not differentiated from the postocular setae; gena and postgena gray with black setae; antenna dark brown [first flagellomere lost in the holotype], palpus dark brown with black apex. Thorax – Gray, postpronotal lobe with golden microtomentum. Proepimeron bare; prosternum with sparse setae. Chaetotaxy: acrostichals 3 (weakly differentiated) + 1, dorsocentrals 3 + 4 (two posterior longer), intra­alars 1 + 2, supra­alars 2 + 3, postpronotals 3, postalars 2, notopleurals 4, scutellum with 2 marginals bristles intercalated by 2 weak ones, apical absent, discals 1, meropleurals 6, katepisternals 3 (in a line). Wing hyaline, R 1 bare, R 4 + 5 setulose in basal 2 / 3 to crossvein r­m, costal spine not differentiated, third costal sector without ventral setulae. Legs black, mid femur apically with posteroventral ctenidium (6­7 spines), mid tibia with 1 median postero­dorsal bristle, without ventral setae, hind tibia with 1 antero­ventral median setae. Abdomen – Black with the usual pattern of silvery gray microtomentum; T 1 + 2–3 without median marginal bristle, T 4 with a row of marginal bristles; ST 1­2 with long black hair­like setae. Terminalia – Syntergosternite 7 + 8, epandrium and cercus black with sparse gray microtomentum; epandrium with some differentiated dorsal bristles and syntergosternite 7 + 8 with 3 pairs of bristles in the row of marginals (Fig. 1); cercus moderately curved forwards in profile (Figs. 1­2); surstylus clavate with elongated apical setae (Fig. 1); gonopod with slightly enlarged base (Figs. 3, 4) and paramere gently curved and with a strong median bristle on anterior margin (Figs. 3, 5); phallus with a distinct basiphallus and a deep concavity between the apex of distiphallus and juxta (Figs. 3, 6); juxta narrow, protecting the apices of lateral styli (Figs. 3, 6, 7); lateral stylus long with simple base and dentate apex (Figs. 6, 7); median stylus represented by a small, double, rugose lobe between the apices of the lateral styli (Figs. 6, 7); vesica well sclerotized, bearing a pair of median apophyses laterally, bifurcated at apical portion with divergent arms (Figs. 6, 8). Female – unknown. Material examined – Brazil. São Paulo: Itaquaquecetuba, 1 male (holotype), V. 1929, Townsend (USNM). Distribution – NEOTROPICAL – Brazil (São Paulo). Remarks – This species is very similar to D. transita and D. lopesi, but can be distinguished specifically by the presence of median apophyses and divergent broad apical arms in the vesica (Fig. 8). The ST 5 was not dissected due to the fragility of the holotype.

Dexosarcophaga lopesi Dodge, 1968 (Figs. 28­35) Dexosarcophaga lopesi Dodge, 1968: 430. Type­locality: Panama, Barro Colorado Is.; male holotype, SEM. Ref.­ Lopes, 1974 c: 520 (holotype examined). Male – Total length = 8 mm. Head – Fronto­orbital and parafacial plates gray with intense golden microtomentum, with a row of black setulae along eye margin; frontal vitta dark brown, anteriorly reddish; frons 0.22 X head width; frontal row of 11 bristles; 1 reclinate fronto­orbital bristle, proclinate absent; outer vertical bristle not differentiated from the postocular setae; gena gray with golden microtomentum and black setae; postgena gray with black setae; antenna dark brown, first flagellomere with gray microtomentum, pedicel 0.42 X as long as first flagellomere, arista long plumose on basal 1 / 2; palpus dark brown. Thorax – Gray with golden microtomentum, more intensely in postpronotal area. Prosternum bare. Chaetotaxy: acrostichals 3 (weakly differentiated) + 1, dorsocentrals 3 + 4 (two posteriormost longer), intra­alars 2 + 2, supra­alars 2 + 3, postpronotals 3, postalars 2, notopleurals 4, scutellum with 2 strong marginals intercalated by 2 weaker ones, 1 small apical, discals 1, meropleurals 8­9, katepisternals 3 (in a line). Wing hyaline, R 1 bare, R 4 + 5 setulose in basal 1 / 2 to crossvein r­m, costal spine not differentiated, third costal sector without ventral setulae. Legs black, mid femur apically with posteroventral ctenidium (6 spines), mid tibia ventrally with 1 median setae [hind legs lost in the holotype]. Abdomen – Gray with the usual silver tesselation and slightly golden microtomentum laterally; T 1 + 2–3 without median marginal bristles, T 4 with a pair of median marginals; ST 1­2 with long black hair­like setae. Terminalia – Syntergosternite 7 + 8, epandrium and cercus dark brown with sparse gray microtomentum; epandrium with some differentiated dorsal bristles and syntergosternite 7 + 8 with 3 pairs of marginal bristles (Fig. 28); cercus moderately curved forwards in lateral view (Figs. 28, 29); surstylus clavate with elongated setae in apical half (Fig. 28); gonopod with enlarged base and fine setae along ventral margin (Figs. 30, 31); paramere narrow and slightly curved, with a strong bristle on anterior margin (Figs. 30, 32); phallus and juxta similar to those of D. itaqua (Figs. 30, 33, 34); lateral stylus long with simple base and dentate apex (Figs. 33, 34); median stylus represented by a small, double, rugose lobe between the apices of the lateral styli (Figs. 33, 34); vesica well sclerotized, laterally bearing a pair of small median apophyses, bifurcated at apical portion with convergent and pointed extremities seen in ventral view (Figs. 33, 35). Female – unknown. Material examined – Panama. Barro Colorado Is., 1 male (holotype), 20.XI. 1956, Rettenmeyers (SEM). Distribution – NEOTROPICAL – Panama. Remarks – The phallus of this species closely resembles that of D. transita and D. itaqua, the most noteworthy difference among them is the shape of the vesica, which has small lateral apophyses and convergent apical arms in D. lopesi (Fig. 35). The ST 5 of the holotype was not dissected to avoid damaging the type.

Dexosarcophaga varenna (Dodge, 1968) (Figs. 36­50) Varcophaga varenna Dodge, 1968: 448. Type locality: Panama, Barro Colorado Is.; male holotype, SEM. Male – Total length = 5­6 mm. Head – Fronto­orbital and parafacial plates gray with slightly yellowish microtomentum, with a row of black setulae along eye margin; frontal vitta black; frons 0.20 X head width; frontal row of 9­11 bristles; 1 reclinate fronto­orbital bristle, proclinate absent; outer vertical bristle not differentiated from the postocular setae; gena and postgena gray with black setae; antenna dark brown, first flagellomere with gray microtomentum, pedicel 0.3 X first flagellomere length, arista long plumose on basal 1 / 2; palpus black.. Thorax – Gray with slightly golden microtomentum in postpronotal and mesopleural areas. Prosternum with scattered setulae in posterior 1 / 2. Chaetotaxy: acrostichals 3­4 (weakly differentiated) + 1, dorsocentrals 3­4 + 4 (two posteriormost longer), intra­alars 2 + 2, supra­alars 2 + 3, postpronotals 3, postalars 2, notopleurals 4, scutellum with 2 marginals strong setae intercalated by 2 weak ones, 1 small apical, discals 1, meropleurals 7­ 9, katepisternals 3 (in a line). Wing hyaline, R 1 bare, R 4 + 5 setulose in basal 1 / 2 to crossvein r­m, costal spine not differentiated, third costal sector without ventral setulae. Legs black, mid femur with posteroventral apical ctenidium (3 spines), mid tibia with 1 setae in the apical half and 1 strong one ventrally in anterior face, hind tibia with 1 anteroventral setae. Abdomen – Gray with the usual silver tesselation and slightly golden microtomentum in lateral; T 1 + 2–3 without median marginal seta, T 4 with a pair of median marginal setae; ST 2 with long and dense black setae. ST 5 with scattered black thin setae, posterior margin with a shallow concavity (Fig. 44). Terminalia – Syntergosternite 7 + 8, epandrium and cercus dark brown; epandrium with some differentiate dorsal setae and syntergosternite 7 + 8 with 3 pairs of marginal setae (Fig. 36); cercus moderately curved forwards in profile (Figs. 36, 37); clavate surstylus with setae in anterior margin (Fig. 36); gonopod with enlarged base (Figs. 38, 39) and paramere narrow and slightly curved, with a strong setae on anterior margin (Figs. 38, 40); phallus with a distinct basiphallus, distiphallus with a pair of ventral tongue­like process and a pair of membranous and spinous small lobes in the dorsal surface (Figs. 38, 41, 45); juxta narrow and elongated, protecting the apices of lateral styli (Figs. 38, 41, 45); long lateral stylus with simple base and dentate apex (Figs. 41, 42, 45, 46); median stylus represented by a small double rugose lobe between the apices of the lateral styli (Figs. 41, 42, 45, 46); vesica well sclerotized, bearing a pair of median projections with serrate margin, bifurcated at apical portion with each arm ending pointed and serrate with a membranous inner prolongation, see in ventral view (Figs. 41, 43, 47). Female – Total length = 6­8 mm. Like the male in most characters, except for: frons broader, 0.24 X head width; 2 well developed proclinate fronto­orbital bristle; entire T 6 with narrow hind region and series of marginal bristles; spiracle 6 situated in membrane and 7 within the sclerite; T 8 divided in two broad and exposed plates, without setae; epiproct divided into two small plates, each one with 1 setae; ST 6 broader than ST 5; ST 7 with longer bristles in posterior region; ST 8 joined to ST 7, with a sclerotized and setose posterior area with a little median anterior projection; membranous vaginal plate (Figs. 48, 49); spermathecae pyriform, finely striated (Fig. 50). Remarks – A detailed analysis of the type of D. dominicensis gave reasons to consider the nominal species as a junior synonym of D. varenna (Figs. 44­47). The shape and structural arrangement of the distiphallus of D. varenna and D. pusilla Lopes, 1975 suggest that these species may form a distinct species­group. Both species have a pair of small sclerotized tongue­like processes, connected to the internal part of the distal area and projecting from near the base of the lateral styli (Figs. 41, 45).
