252. Asteroseismic Study of KIC 11145123: Its Structure and Rotation

Abstract

KIC 11145123 is one of the Kepler targets that has been actively studied asteroseismically. Its well-resolved frequency splittings for p, g, and mixed modes have enabled us to infer the 1-dimensional surface-to-core rotation of the star (Kurtz et al., Mon Not R Astron Soc 444:102, 2014) and to measure the asphericity of the star sensed by the modes (Gizon et al., Sci Adv 2:e1601777, 2016). These have been the first such attempts for main-sequence stars other than the Sun. In this paper, we report further detailed asteroseismic analyses of KIC 11145123, focusing on inferring 2-dimensional rotation profile and on fine-tuning the equilibrium model of the star. Our main results are: (1) the convective core might be rotating six times faster than the other parts of the star, and (2) adopting diffusion “weaker” than the usual settings used in the standard 1-d stellar evolution calculations leads to a better agreement with the observed g-mode period spacing pattern. These two results suggest that the rotational velocity shear might be causing some extra mixing around the boundary between convective core and radiative region above, and the extra mixing weakens, in effect, the diffusion process there. This resembles a mechanism thought to be at work around the solar tachocline.

253. Oblique Pulsation: New, Challenging Observations with TESS Data

Abstract

A major result from the first cycle of the TESS mission shows that the well-studied roAp star HD 6532 has a completely different mode geometry when compared to the published extensive ground-based B observations taken in 1984, 1985 and 1994. This is a major challenge to the widely used and theoretically explored oblique pulsator model. There are three prime hypotheses: (1) The oblique pulsator model is wrong. If that is shown, 40 years of work on these stars will need reinterpretation. (2) The star has dramatically changed pulsation axes. No pulsating star has previously even been suspected of doing this. We do not know if a pulsating star can do this. (3) Theory and extensive spectroscopic observations show that the pulsation mode geometry in roAp stars is sensitive to atmospheric depth. Subsequently, in these stars, we can see pulsation amplitude, phase and geometry in 3D. It is possible that the ground-based B observations and the TESS red bandpass observations are seeing a very different pulsation structure at different depths. If this can be shown, it will be novel and unexpected with implications for stellar pulsation in general. The test of these hypotheses requires simultaneous ground-based observations in UBV at the time of new observations of HD 6532 by TESS. This problem is novel, has wider implications for asteroseismology, and is testable by our method

254. Deciphering Solar Magnetic Activity: 140 Years Of The 'Extended Solar Cycle' -- Mapping the Hale Cycle

Abstract

We investigate the occurrence of the "extended solar cycle" (ESC) as it occurs in a host observational data spanning 140 years. Investigating coronal, chromospheric, photospheric and interior diagnostics we develop a consistent picture of solar activity migration linked to the 22-year Hale (magnetic) cycle using superposed epoch analysis (SEA) using previously identified Hale cycle termination events as the key time for the SEA. Our analysis shows that the ESC and Hale cycle, as highlighted by the terminator-keyed SEA, is strongly recurrent throughout the entire observational record studied, some 140 years. Applying the same SEA method to the sunspot record confirms that Maunder's butterfly pattern is a subset of the underlying Hale cycle, strongly suggesting that the production of sunspots is not the fundamental feature of the Hale cycle, but the ESC is. The ESC (and Hale cycle) pattern highlights the importance of 55\degree\ latitude in the evolution, and possible production, of solar magnetism., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures. 269. Patient voice and health education for familial hypercholesterolaemia.

Abstract

Objective: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), an autosomal dominant disorder causing elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from birth resulting in premature cardiovascular disease, is only diagnosed in 10% of affected patients. This study involved partnering with patients with FH and with primary care providers (PCPs) to understand health priorities and translate them into hypotheses for future research and enhancement of health practices via electronic health records (EHRs). The goal was to strengthen genetic health education for clinicians and for patients and their families, including improved diagnosis, knowledge and treatment. Perceptions regarding genetic health education and healthcare related to FH facilitated by the use of an EHR for diagnosis and treatment have not been studied. Design: Mixed-methods exploratory qualitative research and surveys. Setting: Qualitative research included five focus groups, 34 semi-structured key informant interviews and open-ended survey items with patients and PCPs at a large medical centre in Western New York. Method: Data were thematically coded to identify themes as formative work for the improvement of relevant EHR features, diagnosis, treatment and genetic health education via information sharing between clinicians and patients. Results: Themes included genetic health knowledge; the importance of being diagnosed; communication between patients, family members and medical professionals; outreach via patients' own advocacy; and treatment, technology, motivation, trust, outside resources (for further genetic health education and support) and awareness of effective treatments. Conclusion: Patients and clinicians can contribute to the development of EHR support for the genetic health education of patients and their families, and for improved diagnosis and treatment of FH. Using their ideas in the development of effective strategies could improve the currently low rate of FH diagnosis and cascade screening (for family members), as well as enhance physician and patient genetic health knowledge and self-empowerment.
