In this paper we present the current status of a XMM-Newton program to observe an optically-defined, complete and unbiased sample of Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxies. The main goal of this project is the measurement of the occurrence rate of transition between transmission- (i.e.: Compton-thin), and reflection-dominated spectral states. These transitions potentially provide information on the distribution of the obscuring matter surrounding the nucleus, and on the duty-cycle of the AGN activity. With about 2/3 of the whole sample being observed, we detected 1 further transition out of 8 observed objects, confirming previous suggestions that these transitions occur on time-scales ~50-100 years., Comment: 4 Latex pages, 5 figures, To appear in the proceedings of the Conference "Multiwavelength AGN Surveys", Mujica R. and Maiolino R. We report on a long (100 ks) XMM-Newton observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Arakelian 120. The source previously showed no signs of intrinsic reddening in its infrared-ultraviolet continuum and previous observations had shown no evidence for ionized absorption in either the ultraviolet or X-ray bands. The new XMM-Newton RGS data place tight limits on the presence of an ionized X-ray absorber and confirm that the X-ray spectrum of Ark 120 is essentially unmodified by intervening matter. Thus Ark 120 can be considered a `bare' Seyfert 1 nucleus. This observation therefore offers a clean view of the X-ray spectrum of a `normal' Seyfert galaxy free from absorption effects. The spectrum shows a Doppler broadened iron emission line (FWHM ~ 3*10^4 km/s) and a smooth, continuous soft excess which appears to peak at an energy ~0.5 keV. This adds weight to the claim that genuine soft excesses (i.e. those due to a real steepening of the underlying continuum below ~2 keV) are ubiquitous in Seyfert 1 spectra. However, the detailed shape of the excess could not be reproduced by any of the simple models tested (power-laws, blackbodies, Comptonised blackbodies, accretion disc reflection). This observation therefore demonstrates both the need to understand the soft excess (as a significant contributor to the luminosity of most Seyfert 1s) and the inability of the existing, simple models to explain it., Comment: 14 pages. 13 figures. Narrow spectral features in the 5--6 keV range were recently discovered in the X-ray spectra of a few active galactic nuclei. We discuss the possibility that these features are due to localized spots which occur on the surface of an accretion disc following its illumination by flares. We present detailed line profiles as a function of orbital phase of the spot and its radial distance from a central black hole. Comparison of these computed profiles with observed features can help to estimate parameters of the system. In principle this method can provide a powerful tool to measure the mass of super-massive black holes in active galactic nuclei. By comparing our simulations with the Chandra and XMM-Newton results, we show, however, that spectra from present generation X-ray satellites are not of good enough quality to fully exploit the method and determine the black hole mass with sufficient accuracy. This task has to be deferred to future missions with high throughput and high energy resolution, such as Constellation-X and Xeus., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of deep near-infrared observations of 11 hard X-ray selected sources in the Hellas2XMM survey, with faint optical magnitude (R>24) and high X-ray-to-optical flux ratio. All but one of the sources have been detected in the Ks band, with bright counterparts (Ks<19) and red colors (R-K>5), and therefore belong to the ERO population. A detailed analysis of the surface brightness profiles allows us to classify all of the NIR counterparts. There are 2 point-like objects, 7 elliptical galaxies and one source with a disky profile. None of the extended sources shows any evidence for the presence of a central unresolved object tracing the putative X-ray emitting AGN. Using both the R-K colors and the morphological information, we have estimated for all the sources a ``minimum photometric redshift'', ranging between 0.8 and 2.4; the elliptical hosts have zmin=0.9-1.4. We computed the X-ray properties using these redshifts: most of the sources have NH>10^{22}, with unabsorbed X-ray luminosities up to 10^{45}erg s^{-1}. These objects therefore belong to the population of obscured (Type II) quasars and, from a statistical point of view, they turn out to be a non-negligible fraction (~10%) of the most luminous AGN. Selecting the high X/O sources for a follow-up study in the NIR is therefore a powerful technique aimed at studying at high redshift the hosts of Type II AGN. Overall, our results seem to indicate that the hosts are mostly elliptical galaxies at z~1, and that these near-IR bright objects would be among the most massive spheroids at these epochs., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. We present broad-band (0.1--90keV) spectral and temporal properties of the three Intermediate Polars, RE0751+144 (PQ Gem), RXJ0558.0+5353 (V405Aur) and RXJ1712.6-2414 (V2400 Oph) based on simultaneous soft and hard X-ray observations with the BeppoSAX satellite. The analysis of their spectra over the wide energy range of BeppoSAX instruments allows us to identify the soft and hard X-ray components and to determine simultaneously their temperatures. The black--body temperatures of the irradiated poles of the white dwarf atmosphere are found to be 60--100eV, much higher than those found in their synchronous analogues, the Polars. The temperature of the optically thin post--shock plasma is well constrained in RXJ1712.6-2414 and in RE0751+144 (13 and 17keV) and less precisely determined in RXJ0558.0+5353. In the first two systems evidence of subsolar abundances is found, similarly to what estimated in other magnetic Cataclysmic Variables. A Compton reflection component is present in RXJ0558.0+5353 and in RE0751+144 and it is favoured in RXJ1712.6-2414. Its origin is likely at the irradiated white dwarf surface. Although these systems share common properties (soft X-ray component and optical polarized radiation), their X-ray power spectra and light curves at different energies suggest accretion geometries which cannot be reconciled with a single and simple configuration., Comment: 12 pages, 15 postscript figures, LateX, uses aa.cls. We present results from the spectral analysis of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-5-23-16, based on ASCA, BeppoSAX, Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. The spectrum of this object shows a complex iron Kalpha emission line, which is best modeled by a superposition of a narrow and a broad (possibly relativistic) iron line, together with a Compton reflection component. Comparing results from all (six) available observations, we do not find any significant variation in the flux of both line components. The moderate flux continuum variability (about 25% difference between the brightest and faintest states), however, does not permit us to infer much about the location of the line-emitting material. The amount of Compton reflection is lower than expected from the total iron line EW, implying either an iron overabundance or that one of the two line components (most likely the narrow one) originates in Compton-thin matter., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

In this paper I present evidence suggesting that the absence or presence of Hidden Broad Line Regions (HBLRs) in Seyfert 2 galaxies is regulated by the rate at which matter accretes onto a central supermassive black hole, in units of Eddington. I discuss the above findings in the context of a model proposed by Nicastro (2000), in which the existence of the BLRs is regulated by the disk accretion rate. We present results from the photometric and spectroscopic identification of 122 X-ray sources discovered by XMM-Newton in the 2-10 keV band (the HELLAS2XMM 1dF sample). One of the most interesting results (which is found also in deeper sourveys) is that ~20% of the sources have an X-ray to optical flux ratio (X/O) ten times or more higher than that of optically selected AGN. Unlike the faint sources found in the ultra-deep Chandra and XMM-Newton surveys, which reach X-ray (and optical) fluxes >~10 times lower than in the HELLAS2XMM sample, many of the extreme X/O sources in our sample have R~25 and are therefore accessible to optical spectroscopy. We report the identification of 13 sources with extreme X/O values. We propose that radio-quiet quasars and Seyfert galaxies have central black holes powering outflows and jets which propagate only for a short distance, because the velocity of the ejected material is smaller than the escape velocity. We call them "aborted" jets. If the central engine works intermittently, blobs of material may be produced, which can reach a maximum radial distance and then fall back, colliding with the blobs produced later and still moving outwards. These collisions dissipate the bulk kinetic energy of the blobs by heating the plasma, and can be responsible (entirely or at least in part) for the generation of the high energy emission in radio-quiet objects. This is alternative to the more conventional scenario in which the X-ray spectrum of radio-quiet sources originates in a hot (and possibly patchy) corona above the accretion disk. In the latter case the ultimate source of energy of the emission of both the disk and the corona is accretion. Here we instead propose that the high energy emission is powered also by the extraction of the rotational energy of the black hole (and possibly of the disk). By means of Montecarlo simulations we calculate the time dependent spectra and light curves, and discuss their relevance to the X-ray spectra in radio-quiet AGNs and galactic black hole sources. We present the broad band analysis of two BeppoSAX observations of the Sy 1 Mkn509. In 2000 the source was in a typical flux state, F{2-10keV}=2.7x10^{-11}erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, while in 1998 it was found in a high flux state, F{2-10keV}=5.7x10^{-11} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}. A comparison between the two states shows a energy-dependent flux variation. A soft excess, a narrow iron line and a Compton reflection hump above 10 keV, are clearly apparent in the residuals after fitting the spectra with a simple power law. We tested two alternative models. In the first the iron line and the high energy bump are well reproduced by reprocessing in a cold and Compton thick material. The intensity of the iron line (also consistent with a Chandra measurement) as well as the normalization of the reflection hump are consistent with a constant in the two epochs: this, combined with the fact that the line is narrow as observed by Chandra, suggests a common origin from distant and optically thick matter. This model further requires a component to model the soft excess: the empirical choice of two black bodies accounts well for the excess in both observations, their combined strength was a factor about three higher in the high than in the low flux state defined above. However the relative contribution of the soft excess is higher in the low flux state. In the second model we attempted to reproduce all spectral features, except for the narrow cold line, with reflection from an ionized disc. This model is successful only in the high flux state,but it fails in the low flux state, when the soft excess is only partially accounted for. In either models, the slope of the power law is larger in the high than in the low flux state, in agreement with a behaviour known to be shared by several objects of the same type., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Mkn 841 has been observed simultaneously by XMM and BeppoSAX in January 2001. Due to operational contingency, the 30ks XMM observation was split into two parts, separated by about 15 hours. We first report the presence of a narrow iron line which appears to be rapidly variable between the two pointings, requiring a non-standard interpretation. We then focus on the analysis of the broad band (0.3-200 keV) continuum using the XMM/EPIC, RGS and SAX/PDS data. The Mkn 841 spectrum is well fitted by a comptonization model in a geometry more photon-fed than a simple slab geometry above a passive disk. It presents a relatively large reflection (R>2) which does not agree with an apparently weak iron line. It also show the presence of a strong soft excess wellfitted by a comptonized spectrum in a cool plasma, suggesting the presence of a multi-temperature corona., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. We present results from a BeppoSAX (July 2001) observation of the FRI radio galaxy NGC6251, together with a re-analysis of archival ASCA (October 1994) and Chandra (September 2000) data. The weak detection above 10 keV and the lack of iron fluorescent K-alpha emission lines in the BeppoSAX spectrum rule out that the bulk of the X-ray emission is due to an obscured Seyfert nucleus. The study of the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution suggests instead that X-rays probably originate as inverse-Compton of synchrotron seed photons in a relativistic jet, indicating that NGC6251 hosts a low radio luminosity [L(5 GHz) ~10^40 erg/s] blazar. The BeppoSAX spectrum is flatter than in the earlier ASCA observation. This might be due to the emergence of a different spectral component during phases of lower X-ray flux. A fraction of active galactic nuclei do not show the classical Seyfert-type signatures in their optical spectra, i.e. they are optically "elusive". X-ray observations are an optimal tool to identify this class of objects. We combine new Chandra observations with archival X-ray data in order to obtain a first estimate of the fraction of elusive AGN in local galaxies and to constrain their nature. Our results suggest that elusive AGN have a local density comparable to or even higher than optically classified Seyfert nuclei. Most elusive AGN are heavily absorbed in the X-rays, with gas column densities exceeding 10^24 cm^-2, suggesting that their peculiar nature is associated with obscuration. It is likely that in elusive AGN, the nuclear UV source is completely embedded and the ionizing photons cannot escape, which prevents the formation of a classical Narrow Line Region. We present extensive optical, radio and infrared follow-up observations of a sample of 35 hard X-ray (2-10 keV) selected sources discovered serendipitously in the PV XMM-Newton observation of the radio-loud quasar PKS 0312-77 field, for which also an archival Chandra observation is available. The observations have been carried out as part of the HELLAS2XMM survey, a program aimed to understand the nature of the sources responsible for the bulk of the hard X-ray Background (XRB). The identification of the optical counterparts greatly benefits from the positional accuracy obtained from Chandra and radio observations. As a consequence, the spectroscopic completeness of the present sample (80%) is limited only by the faintness of the optical counterparts. The multiwavelength coverage of our survey allows us to unveil a large spread in the overall properties of hard X-ray selected sources. At low redshift (z<1), the source breakdown includes Broad Line AGN, Narrow Emission-Line Galaxies, and optically ``normal'' galaxies. All the ten sources at z>1 are spectroscopically classified as Broad Line AGNs. A few of them show significant intrinsic X-ray absorption (N(H)>10^22 cm^-2), further supporting previous evidence of a decoupling between optical and X-ray properties at high luminosities and redshifts. Finally, a non negligible fraction (15%) of the hard X-ray sources are not detected down to the limiting magnitude of the optical images. The corresponding high X-ray to optical flux ratio, X-ray and optical-infrared colors strongly suggest that they are high redshift, obscured AGN., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (aa.cls included)

The analysis of a simultaneous XMM-Newton/BeppoSAX plus three previous BeppoSAX observations revealed that NGC 7213 is a rather peculiar Seyfert 1. No significant Compton reflection component was observed, while an iron line complex, best explained in terms of three narrow lines, is clearly apparent in the data. Due to the absence of the reflection component, the neutral iron line is likely not produced in a Compton-thick material, but current data do not allow to choose between a Compton-thin torus and the BLR. The two ionized iron lines from \ion{Fe}{xxv} and \ion{Fe}{xxvi} may be produced in a photoionized gas with a column density of a few 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, in analogy with the case of NGC 5506., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We present results from the photometric and spectroscopic identification of 122 X-ray sources recently discovered by XMM-Newton in the 2-10 keV band (the HELLAS2XMM 1dF sample). Their flux cover the range 8E-15-4E-13 cgs and the total area surveyed is 0.9 deg2. About 20% of the hard X-ray selected sources have an X-ray to optical flux ratio (X/O) ten times or more higher than that of optically selected AGN. Unlike the faint sources found in the ultra-deep Chandra and XMM-Newton surveys, which reach X-ray (and optical) fluxes more than one order of magnitude lower than the HELLAS2XMM survey sources, many of the extreme X/O sources in our sample have R<=25 and are therefore accessible to optical spectroscopy. We report the identification of 13 sources with X/O>10: 8 are narrow line QSO (i.e. QSO2), four are broad line QSO. We use a combined sample of 317 hard X-ray selected sources (HELLAS2XMM 1dF, CDFN 1Msec, SSA13 and Lockman Hole flux limited samples), 221 with measured z, to evaluate the cosmological evolution of the hard X-ray source's number and luminosity densities. Looking backward in time, the low luminosity sources (logL(2-10keV) = 43-44 erg/s) increase in number at a rate different than the high luminosity sources (logL(2-10keV)>44.5 erg/s), reaching a maximum around z=1 and then levelling off beyond z=2. This translates into an accretion driven luminosity density which is dominated by sources with logL(2-10keV) < 44.5 erg/s up to at least z=1, while the contribution of the same sources and of those with logL(2-10keV)>44.5 erg/s appear to be comparable between z=2 and 4., Comment: v2, minor changes, A&A in press

The radio galaxy Centaurus A was observed by the BeppoSAX satellite five times from 1997 to 2000. From July 6 1999 to August 17 1999, the source was also simultaneously pointed by COMPTEL on-board of the satellite CGRO. Centaurus A has a complex spectrum with multiple extended components and a strongly absorbed (N_H\sim 10^{23}$ cm${-2}) nucleus well fitted by a power law (\Gamma \sim 1.8) which bends at high energies. When the BeppoSAX and COMPTEL observations are combined together, an exponential cutoff with e-folding energy \sim 1000 keV gives an adequate description of the spectral steepening. A complex feature in emission at 6-7 keV is resolved into two Fe components, one narrow cold line and an ionized line centred at 6.8 keV. Significant variations have been observed in the iron feature, with the less prominent ionized line seemingly being the only one responsible for them: its variations do not appear to correlate with the strength of the continuum. The high energy cutoff and the Fe feature suggest the presence of an accretion flow in the Centaurus A nucleus. However the absence of a significant reflection, the narrowness of the cold line as well as the lack of correlation between the continuum and 6.8 keV line variations disfavour a standard cold/ionized thin disk (at least in the inner regions). A more plausible configuration might be a hot thick optically thin accretion flow surrounded by material with different opacities. Finally, we note that high energy break observed by BeppoSAX and COMPTEL could be also reasonably explained by Inverse Compton radiation from a jet. If this is the case, a structured jet with outer slow layers surrounding a beamed inner region is necessary to explain the strong Fe feature observed by BeppoSAX., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In this paper we present evidence suggesting that the absence or presence of Hidden Broad Line Regions (HBLRs) in Seyfert 2 galaxies is regulated by the rate at which matter accretes onto a central supermassive black hole, in units of Eddington rate. We use the intrinsic (i.e. unabsorbed) X-ray luminosities of these sources and their black hole masses (estimated by using the well known relationship between nuclear mass and bulge luminosity in galaxies) to derive the nuclear accretion rate in units of Eddington. We find that virtually all HBLR sources have accretion rate larger than a threshold value of $\dot{m}_{thres} \simeq 10^{-3}$ (in Eddington units), while non-HBLR sources lie at $\dot{m} \ls \dot{m}_{thres}$. These data nicely fit predictions from a model proposed by Nicastro (2000), in which the Broad Line Regions (BLRs) are formed by accretion disk instabilities occurring in proximity of the critical radius at which the disk changes from gas pressure dominated to radiation pressure dominated. This radius diminishes with decreasing accretion rates; for low enough accretion rates (and therefore luminosities), the critical radius becomes smaller than the innermost stable orbit, and BLRs cannot form., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure. We present and discuss Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy and Compton-thick absorbed source, Tololo~0109-383. The hard X-ray emission (i.e. above $\sim$2 keV), is dominated by a spatially unresolved reflection component, as already discovered by previous ASCA and BeppoSAX observ ations. The soft X-ray emission is partly ($\sim$15%) extended over about 1 kpc. Below 2 keV, the spectrum is very steep and two emission lines, probably due to recombination to He-like ions of oxygen and neon, are clearly present. Combining X-rays and optical information taken from the literature, we propose an overall scenario for the nuclear regions of this source., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, A&A 399, 519

We present a detailed discussion of the spectral and spatial components of NGC 5506, based on XMM-Newton, Chandra and BeppoSAX observations. The overall picture consists of a nucleus absorbed by cold gas with column density of $\approx10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and surrounded by a Compton-thick torus, whose existence is inferred by a cold reflection component and an iron K$\alpha$ line. On a much larger scale, a photoionized gas extended on $\approx350$ pc reprocesses the nuclear radiation, producing a soft excess and ionized iron lines. We discuss the properties of a small sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies whose X-ray spectrum changed appearance on time scales of years, becoming reflection-dominated from Compton-thin, or viceversa. A reflection--dominated spectrum is usually taken as evidence of Compton-thick absorption, but we instead argue that such a spectrum is due to a temporary switching--off of the nuclear radiation. The observations discussed here may help explaining mismatches between optical and X-ray classifications, and provide new strong and direct evidence of the presence of more than one cold circumnuclear region in Seyfert 2 galaxies., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the spectral analysis of a long XMM-Newton observation of the well-studied, moderate luminosity Broad Line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The source was at an historically average brightness and we find the hard (3-10 keV) spectrum can be well fitted by a power law of photon index gamma ~ 1.75, together with reflection. The only feature in the hard X-ray spectrum is a narrow emission line near 6.4 keV, with an equivalent width of ~ 60 eV. The energy and strength of this line is consistent with fluorescence from `neutral' iron distant from the central continuum source. We find no evidence for a broad Fe K line, with an upper limit well below previous reports, suggesting the inner accretion disc is now absent or highly ionised. The addition of simultaneous BeppoSAX data allows the analysis to be extended to 200 keV, yielding important constraints on the total reflection. Extrapolation of the hard X-ray power law down to 0.3 keV shows a clear `soft excess' below ~ 0.7 keV. After due allowance for the effects of a complex warm absorber, measured with the XMM-Newton RGS, we find the soft excess is better described as a smooth upward curvature in the continuum flux below ~ 2 keV. The soft excess can be modelled either by Comptonised thermal emission or by enhanced reflection from the surface of a highly ionised disc., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRAS; minor changes to text and figures

We report on a dramatic flux (50 % increase in the LECS and MECS band) and spectral variation between two BeppoSAX observations of the Circinus Galaxy performed almost three years apart. Through the analysis of all Chandra observations available in the archive, including a new DDT observation on May 2001, we show that a high flux state of an extremely variable Ultra Luminous X-ray source (CG X-1: Bauer et al. 2001}, which is within the adopted BeppoSAX source extraction region of 2", is the most likely explanation for most of the observed variation. However, the presence of a high flux 6.7 keV line and the spectral variation of the PDS in the new BeppoSAX data could be partly due to intrinsic variation of the nucleus. Comparing the longest Chandra observation and the BeppoSAX one, we find that the long-term flux variability of CG X-1 is not accompanied by a significant spectral variability. We also re-analysed the Chandra HEG nuclear spectra and report on the presence of a Compton shoulder with a flux of about 20% the line core, in agreement with theoretical expectations for Compton-thick matter., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

We present the last pointed observation of AM Her carried out during the life of the BeppoSAX satellite. It was bright at the beginning of the observation, but dropped to the lowest X-ray level ever observed so far. The X-ray emission during the bright period is consistent with accretion occurring onto the main pole of the magnetized white dwarf. The rapid change from the active state to the low deep state indicates a drop by a factor of 17 in the accretion rate and hence that accretion switched-off. The short timescale (less than one hour) of this variation still remains a puzzle. Optical photometry acquired simultaneousy during the low state shows that the white dwarf remains heated, although a weak emission from the accretion stream could be still present. Cyclotron radiation, usually dominating the V and R bands, is negligible thus corroborating the possibility that AM Her was in an off-accretion state. We calculate the Equivalent Widht of the Core and the centroid energy and relative flux of the 1st order Compton Shoulder of the iron Kalpha emission line from neutral matter. The calculations are performed with Monte Carlo simulations. We explore a large range of column densities for both transmitted and reflected spectra, and study the dependence on the iron abundance. The Compton Shoulder is now becoming observable in many objects thanks to the improved sensitivity and/or energy resolution of XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites, and the present work aims to provide a tool to derive informations on the geometry and element abundances of the line emitting matter from Compton Shoulder measurements., Comment: 4 pages; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Most Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are `obscured', i.e. the nucleus is hiding behind a screen of absorbing material. The advantage of having the nucleus obscured is to make easier the observations of those emission components which originate in circumnuclear matter outside the absorbing regions, because in this case they are not outshined by the nuclear emission. This is particularly important in X-rays, where spatial resolution is (with the notable exception of Chandra) poorer than in the optical, and the study of circumnuclear regions is often based on spectral analysis only. The properties of circumnuclear matter, in the light of recent high spectral and/or angular resolution $Chandra$ and XMM--Newton observations, will be reviewed in Sec.2. In Sec.3 we will discuss obscured AGN in the framework of the Unification Model. Recent discoveries of X-ray obscured Seyfert 1, and of X-ray loud but optically normal galaxies, are calling for a revision of the Unification Model. Obscured AGN have also a cosmological relevance. Not only are they a fundamental ingredient of synthesis models of the Cosmic X-ray Background (XRB), but provide a link between the XRB and the Cosmic Infrared Background, as briefly discussed in Sec.4., Comment: 12 pages; to appear in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society (Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences)

A sample of nine bright Seyfert 1 and NELG type galaxies, observed with BeppoSAX, is analyzed to assess on a truly broad band basis (0.1-200 keV) the issue of the spectral contributions of Compton reflection and iron line fluorescence from circumnuclear gas. The empirical description adopted for the direct continuum is the commonly used power law with an exponential cut-off. The most direct test of the theoretical predictions, namely that the equivalent width of the line, Walpha, and the strength R of the reflection relative to the direct continuum are closely related to each other, gives a substantially positive result, that is their mean ratio is very close to expectation, and only a modest spread in the iron abundance seems implied. The existence of a steep correlation between R and the slope Gamma of the power law is not confirmed. A weak evidence is found that the existence of a very shallow trend to increase on average with Gamma cannot be altogether excluded in both R and Walpha, but needs to be tested with a larger sample. The energy Ef in the exponential cut-off spans a range from about 80 to more than 300 keV. A possible correlation is found, with Ef increasing on average with Gamma: if ignored, for instance by keeping Ef at a fixed value in a sample study, it could be cause of artificial steepening in a correlation between R and Gamma., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the detection of a rapidly variable narrow Fe K$\alpha$ line in Mkn 841. The source has been observed two times by XMM-Newton and simultaneously with BeppoSAX. The two observations, of about 10ks long each, were separated by $\sim$ 15 hours. The line flux reaches a maximum during the first observation and is significantly reduced in the second one. The continuum shape and flux, instead, keep roughly constant between the two pointings. Such rapid variability of a narrow (unresolved by the XMM-pn instrument) line has never been reported in the past. These results are not easily explained in the standard cold reflection model where the narrow line component is supposed to be produced far from the primary X-ray source (e.g. from the torus) and is thus not expected to vary rapidly. We report on a dramatic transition between a Compton-thick, reflection-dominated state and a Compton-thin state in the Seyfert 2 galaxy UGC4203, discovered by comparing a recent (May 2001) XMM-Newton observation with ASCA observations performed about six years earlier. This transition can be explained either as a change in the column density of the absorber, maybe due to moving clouds in a clumpy torus, or as the revival of a transient active nucleus, which was in a phase of very low activity when observed by ASCA. If the latter explanation is correct, spectral transitions of this kind provide observational support to the idea that Compton-thick and Compton-thin regions coexist in the same source, the former likely to be identified with the "torus", the latter with dust lanes on much larger scales., Comment: 6 Latex pages, 5 figures, To appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics

BeppoSAX observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 for ~ 5 days from 1998 June 6 to 1998 June 10. The average flux during the observation was F(2-10 keV) ~ 6 X 10^{-11} erg cm^-2 s^-1. The long exposure provided a very high quality spectrum that exhibits all the typical features of Seyfert 1s. The high energy cut-off of the intrinsic continuum, at E_c=340+560/-107 keV, was detected for the first time in this object. During the observation the source showed modest flux variations (~ 20% in 2-10 keV) and spectral variability that can be completely explained by a change of the intrinsic slope \Delta\Gamma ~ 0.1. NGC 3783 is one of the few Seyfert 1s that exhibits a soft emission component in the BeppoSAX spectrum. This soft excess is well reproduced by a black body component with temperature kT ~ 0.2 keV. A warm absorber is also required to fit the soft X-ray spectrum. Both reprocessing features, the Compton reflection hump and the Fe emission line, were detected in our observation. In addition to a narrow iron line (as observed by Chandra) a broad component with sigma=0.72 +1.28/-0.27 keV and EW=115+/-76 eV, is required to fit the line. The observed Compton hump and the Fe line are well reproduced with the ionized (lg(xi)=2.73+0.04/-0.05) disc reflection model of Ross & Fabian. In this case the soft excess observed below 2 keV can be accounted for by the disc emissivity and no additional soft X-rays component is required to fit the spectrum., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the discovery of a relativistic iron K\alpha fluorescent emission line in the BeppoSAX spectrum of the microquasar GRS 1915+105, taken on April 19, 1998, when the line was unusually intense. The feature is broad and skewed, clearly indicating emission from the innermost regions of the accretion disc. The inner emitting orbit is larger than the innermost stable orbit, even in Schwarzschild metric: thus, a non-zero BH spin is not required by these data., Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication on A&A

Recent X-ray surveys have clearly demonstrated that a population of optically dull, X-ray bright galaxies is emerging at 2-10 keV fluxes of the order of 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}. Although they might constitute an important fraction of the sources responsible for the hard X-ray background, their nature is still unknown. With the aim to better understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed properties, we have started an extensive program of multiwavelength follow-up observations of hard X-ray, optically quiet galaxies discovered with XMM-Newton. Here we report the results of what can be considered the first example of this class of objects: CXOUJ031238.9-765134, originally discovered by Chandra, and optically identified by Fiore et al. (2000) with an apparently normal early-type galaxy at z=0.159, usually known as "FIORE P3". We present the first results from an XMM-Newton serendipitous medium-deep survey, which covers nearly three square degrees. We show the log(N)-log(S) distributions for the 0.5-2, 2-10 and 5-10 keV bands, which are found to be in good agreement with previous determinations and with the predictions of XRB models. In the soft band we detect a break at fluxes around 5x10^-15 cgs. In the harder bands, we fill in the gap at intermediate fluxes between deeper Chandra and XMM-Newton observations and shallower BeppoSAX and ASCA surveys. We present optical spectroscopic identifications of hard X-ray (5-10 keV) selected sources belonging to the HELLAS sample obtained with BeppoSAX down to a 5-10 keV flux limit of f_{5-10 keV}~3x10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1. The sample consists of 118 sources. 25 sources have been identified trough correlations with catalogues of known sources. 49 have been searched for spectroscopic identification at the telescope. 13 fields resulted empty down to R=21. 37 sources have been identified with type 1 AGN and 9 with type 2 AGN. The remaining are: 5 narrow emission line galaxies, 6 Clusters, 2 BL Lac, 1 Radio Galaxy and 1 Star. Combining these objects with other hard X-ray selected AGNs from ASCA and HEAO1, we find that the local luminosity function of type 1 AGN in the 2-10 keV band is fairly well represented by a double-power-law-function. There is evidence for significant cosmological evolution according to a pure luminosity evolution (PLE) model L_X(z)~(1+z)^k, with k=2.12 and k=2.22 in a (Omega_m,Omega_lambda)=(1.0,0.0) and in a (Omega_m,Omega_lambda)=(0.3,0.7) cosmology, respectively. The data show an excess of faint high redshift type 1 AGN which is well modeled by a luminosity dependent density evolution (LDDE), similarly to what observed in the soft X-rays. However, in both cosmologies, the statistic is not significant enough to distinguish between the PLE and LDDE models. We report the first detailed spectroscopic observations of the recently identified intermediate polar RXJ0028.8+5917/V709 Cas. We discovered that the system shows significant EW ~ (2-4)A broad absorptions, affecting the Balmer lines from Hdelta to Hbeta. These broad absorptions are interpreted as the contribution of an underlying DA logg=8 white dwarf at a temperature of ~ 23 000 K, contributing ~ 17 % (at 4500 A) to the overall flux. This is the first direct detection of a white dwarf in an intermediate polar system. We present preliminary results on the optical identifications of sources from the High Energy Large Area Survey performed with XMM-Newton (HELLAS2XMM). This survey covers about 3 square degrees of sky down to a 2-10 keV flux of 7 x 10^-15 erg cm-2 s-1 (Baldi & Molendi these proceedings, Baldi et al. 2001). The survey good sensitivity over a large area allows us to confirm and extend previous Chandra results about a population of X-ray luminous but optically dull galaxies emerging at 2-10 keV fluxes of about 10-14 erg cm-2 s-1. The bright Narrow Emission Line Galaxy, NGC 5506, has been observed simultaneously by XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX. The iron line is complex, with at least two components: one narrow and corresponding to neutral iron, the second one broad and corresponding to ionized iron. The latter line is equally well fitted by a truly broad line or by a blend of He- and H-like narrow lines. The bulk of the Compton reflection continuum originates in neutral matter, and is therefore associated with the narrow line: they are most likely emitted in distant matter. The origin of the ionized line(s) is less certain, but the solution in terms of a blend of narrow lines from photoionized matter seems to be preferable to emission from an ionized, relativistic accretion disc., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We present the first results from an XMM-Newton serendipitous medium-deep survey, which covers nearly three square degrees. We detect a total of 1022, 495 and 100 sources, down to minimum fluxes of about 5.9 x 10^-16, 2.8 x 10^-15 and 6.2 x 10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1, in the 0.5-2, 2-10 and 4.5-10 keV band, respectively. In the soft band this is one of the largest samples available to date and surely the largest in the 2-10 keV band at our limiting X-ray flux. The measured Log(N)-Log(S) are found to be in good agreement with previous determinations. In the 0.5-2 keV band we detect a break at fluxes around 5 x 10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1. We present RXTE and BeppoSAX observations of the Intermediate Polar V709 Cas acquired in 1997 and 1998 respectively. The X-ray emission from 0.1 to 30keV is dominated by the strong pulsation at the rotational period of the white dwarf (312.8s) with no sign of orbital or sideband periodicity, thus confirming previous ROSAT results. However, we detect changes in the power spectra between the two epochs. While the second harmonic of the spin period is present during both observations, the first harmonic is absent in 1997. An increase in the amplitude of the spin pulsation is found between 1997 and 1998 together with a decrease in the X-ray flux. The average X-ray spectrum from 0.1 to 100keV is well described by an isothermal plasma at ~27keV plus complex absorption and an iron K(alpha) fluorescent line, due to reflection from the white dwarf surface. The rotational pulsation is compatible with complex absorption dominating the low energy range, while the high energy spin modulation can be attributed to tall shocks above the accreting poles. The RXTE spectrum in 1997 also shows the presence of an absorption edge from ionized iron likely located in the pre-shock accretion flow. The variations along the spin period of the partial covering absorber and of reflection are compatible with the classical accretion curtain scenario. The variations in the spin pulse characteristics and X-ray flux indicate that V709 Cas experiences changes in the mass accretion rate on timescales from months to years., Comment: 12 pages, A&A Latex, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present and discuss BeppoSAX observations of Mrk841 and Mrk335, two Seyfert 1 galaxies in which previous observations have established the presence of soft excesses. We confirm the soft excess in both sources, even if for Mrk~841 a warm absorber provides a fit almost as good as the one with a true excess. As far as the hard X-ray continuum is concerned, a Comptonization model provides a fit as good as a power law and a physically sound solution for Mrk841. For Mrk335, the Comptonization model gives a result which is somewhat better on statistical ground, but rather problematic on physical ground. The most interesting results regard the reprocessing components. For Mrk841 we find a very large reflection continuum but an almost normal iron line equivalent width even if, within the errors, a solution in which both components are a factor ~2 larger than expected for an accretion disc is still marginally acceptable. If this is the case, an anisotropy of the primary emission seems the best explanation. On the contrary, in Mrk335 we find a very large iron line EW but a reflection component not accordingly large. In this case, the best solution seems to be in terms of reflection from an ionized disc., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We have studied the correlation among X-ray absorption, optical reddening and nuclear dust morphology in Seyfert 2 galaxies. Two main conclusions emerge: a) the Balmer decrement and the amount of X-ray absorption are anticorrelated on a wide range of column density: 10^{21} < N_H < 10^{24} atoms/cm/cm. The correlation does no longer apply to Compton-thick objects (N_H < 10^{24} atoms/cm/cm), although they span a comparable range in Balmer decrement; b) Compton-thin Seyfert 2s seem to prefer nuclear environments, which are rich of dust on scales of the hundreds parsecs. On the other hand, Compton-thick Seyferts exhibit indifferently ``dust-poor'' and ``dust-rich'' environments. These results support an extension of the Seyfert unification scenario (as recently proposed by Matt, 2000), where Compton-thick Seyfert 2s are observed through compact ``torii'', whereas Compton-thin ones are obscured by dust on much larger scales, Comment: 7 Latex pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astonomical Society
