Abstract

Clinical history: An outbreak of intense pruritus and weight loss in a herd of 40 alpacas (Vicugna pacos) in the south-west of France was investigated after the death of 14 adults. One alpaca was referred to a veterinary teaching hospital for diagnosis and treatment but died soon after and one of the dead alpacas was submitted for necropsy. Clinical findings: The remaining alpacas were intensely pruritic with variably severe and extensive alopecia, erythema, lichenification and crusting on the face, ventral abdomen and distal limbs. Superficial skin scrapes from five animals revealed large numbers of Sarcoptes scabiei mites, and less frequent and numerous Chorioptes bovis mites. Coproscopic examinations revealed a median of 1,350 (min 500, max 8800) strongyle epg. The alpaca admitted for treatment was anaemic and hypoalbuminaemic. Skin scrapes revealed copious S. scabiei and C. bovis mites. The two alpacas examined post-mortem had similar skin lesions to those examined on-farm and were cachexic. One had lung lesions attributed to protostrongylid infestation and its liver contained numerous Dicrocoelium spp. adults. Diagnosis: Sarcoptic and chorioptic mange with secondary superficial bacterial skin infection, associated with severe internal parasitism and underfeeding. Treatment and outcome: All 25 alpacas were treated topically with a 3% chlorhexidine shampoo followed by a 0.025% amitraz wash at the initial visit and then 1, 2, 3, 7 and 9 weeks later. A systemic treatment with S/C 500 µg/kg ivermectin was administered at the initial visit and then 2, 7 and 9 weeks later. The alpacas were treated orally with 50 mg/kg praziquantel to control dicrocoeliosis. Nutritional measures, including increased pasture area and supplemental feeding were simultaneously implemented. Pruritus was reduced 1 week after the start of treatment and had resolved after 2 weeks. After 9 weeks, skin lesions were markedly improved. Six months after the initial visit, skin lesions entirely resolved and superficial skin scrapes, taken from half of the animals, were negative for mites. Clinical relevance: This is the first report of the use of two acaricides combined with a chlorhexidine shampoo to successfully treat simultaneous sarcoptic and chorioptic mange in alpacas. Abstract

Direct inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) kinase (MEK) is a promising strategy in the development of cancer therapeutics to control tumor growth which depends upon aberrant MAPK signaling pathway, such as RAS and BRAF mutant cancer models. Most of the MEK inhibitors that are currently in early clinical development are selective for MEK1 and/or MEK2. Pimasertib (MSC-1936369B, AS-703026) is a highly selective, small-molecule inhibitor of the protein kinase MEK1/2. Several clinical trials are investigating its role, as single agent or in combination, in solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. This review will describe the preclinical and clinical activity of pimasertib.

Abstract

Systems designed by humans have no "intelligence" and only execute algorithms; however, they may, somehow, mimic an intelligent behaviour (smart systems). Since, at present, information management in the electrical energy domain is extremely advantageous, smart systems require, all together, sensors, actuators, and electronic interfaces. In literature there is some confusion, and even some contradiction, between the parameters used for characterizing the properties of sensors and of electronic interfaces. In the first part of the paper we provide a unified, coherent set of definitions which may be applied to both sensors and electronic interfaces. Afterwards we show how non-electrical systems may be conveniently analysed in the electrical domain by means of equivalent circuits, and we review some techniques for the design of high performance electronic interfaces; finally, we show a few examples, which illustrate the use of those techniques in practical applications

Abstract

This paper explores the most recent contributions to interpreting customer-driven supply chains (CDSCs) under the IMP lens, focusing on the main characteristics that emerged from a review of the relevant literature. The purpose of this paper is to offer a holistic interpretative framework of major topics covered by the CDSC literature, highlighting both some shared issues and emerging elements using the IMP conceptual framework’s ARA (actor bonds, activity links and resource ties) model.The findings suggest that the ARA model could be a useful method through which to structure an interpretation of the most recent contributions, in both IMP and the general literature, on the discipline. In particular, three streams of research were identified: the customer closeness strategy, relational strategy, and intra-organizational strategy.

Purpose: The new global context characterized by dynamism, turbulence, volatility and more demanding customers is reshaping many industries. The “New Industrial Revolution”, will require supply chains that are based around digital manufacturing, customer-centricity, value co-creation in a highly networked environment. Three-dimensional printing (3DP), the best known additive manufacturing technology, is gaining the attention of both researchers and practitioners for its enormous potential to face actual world’s changes. This work explores how 3DP has enabled the reconfiguration of a supply chain toward a customer-centric approach, providing new sources of value co-creation across the whole supply chain. Research Approach: This paper explores through qualitative research the ways in which 3DP enables the reconfiguration of a supply chain towards a customer-centric approach to value co-creation. Using a case study from the aerospace sector, one of the leading fields for 3DP applications, the paper describes the realization of the world’s largest-ever printed component for the Trent XWB-97 engine built by Rolls Royce for Airbus. This is the highest performing engine currently that uses additive manufacturing techniques. The inductive analysis is conducted through extensive desk analysis, meetings with industry experts and semi-structured interviews. Findings and Originality: This work underlines that the successful utilization of 3DP in aerospace is made possible by collaboration and coordination between different entities in the supply chain. In particular, the case study highlights how 3DP enables the adoption of an external customer-centric supply chain orientation. This allows the development of the technology and the enabling of four sources of value co-creation that bring benefits for all the supply chain actors. Abstract

This study explores the use of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to monitor the effectiveness of plasma-generated atomic oxygen (AO) treatment for non-invasive cleaning of cultural heritage object. Silk samples dyed with indigo blue, including those soiled with soot to mimic historical artifacts, were treated with plasma-generated atomic oxygen for varying durations. Using HSI with a TWINS [1,2] birefringent interferometer, diffuse reflectance and light-induced fluorescence are observed. That allowed a precise evaluation of sample degradation avoiding any invasive sample extraction. This research not only contributes to the field of cultural heritage conservation but also enhances understanding of indigo colour degradation processes and the evaluation of non-invasive cleaning techniques on sensitive materials.

Abstract

This paper investigates the behaviour of FRP strips glued to concrete subjected to the cyclic loads often induced on structures by dynamic actions, such as the ones induced by traffic loads or earthquake events. The model formulation, shortly summarised in this paper, is consistent with the general assumptions of fracture mechanics and closed-form expressions are obtained for determining the key fracture-related quantities. Then, a parametric analysis is carried out for investigating the influence of both the cyclic load protocol and the bond length on the resulting cyclic response of the system under consideration. The obtained results unveil that debonding failure under cyclic actions can be described by means of general conceptual tools derived by the theory of fatigue.

Abstract

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is one of the leading societies of oncology professionals in the world. Approximately 30% of the 13 000 ESMO members are below the age of 40 and thus meet the society's definition of young oncologists (YOs). ESMO has identified the training and development of YOs as a priority and has therefore established a comprehensive career development programme. This includes a leadership development programme to help identify and develop the future leaders in oncology. Well-trained and highly motivated future generations of multidisciplinary oncologists are essential to ensure the optimal evolution of the field of oncology with the ultimate goal of providing the best possible care to patients with cancer. ESMO's career development portfolio is managed and continuously optimised by several dedicated committees composed of ESMO officers and is directly supervised by the ESMO Executive Board and the ESMO President. It offers unique resources for YOs at all stages of training and includes a broad variety of fellowship opportunities, educational courses, scientific meetings, publications and resources. In this article, we provide an overview of the activities and career development opportunities provided by ESMO to the next generation of oncologists.
