Abstract

Introduction : la pandémie de COVID-19, profonde crise de connaissance, a été à l’origine en France d’une controverse inédite autour de l’utilisation d’hydroxychloroquine initialement promue par l’IHU Méditerranée Infection à Marseille. Les débats qui s’en sont suivi ont profondément divisés la communauté médicale ainsi que l’opinion publique et ont mis en lumière des interrogations sur l’épistémologie médicale et la méthodologie scientifique fondatrice de la médecine basée sur les preuves. Dans ce contexte de crise et de controverse déstabilisant la communauté médicale, nous avons voulu questionner le lien entre les pratiques médicales et les opinions personnelles des médecins. Notre objectif fut d’étudier les pratiques, les difficultés et les expériences de médecins généralistes à Marseille pendant le premier confinement et l’influence qu’a pu exercer localement la controverse autour de l’utilisation d’hydroxychloroquine.Matériel et méthodes : nous avons conduit une étude descriptive transversale à l’aide d’un questionnaire soumis auprès de médecins généralistes installés à Marseille entre le 20 avril 2020 et le 18 mai 2020.Résultats : nous avons pu mettre en évidence une adhésion majeure aux protocoles de l’IHU chez les médecins interrogés avec 91.5% d’opinions positives sur le dépistage de masse et 74.6% d’opinions positives sur l’utilisation d’hydroxychloroquine. Une majorité de 60.6% des médecins a déclaré avoir adressé des patients potentiellement atteints de COVID-19 à l’IHU dont 63.9% pour qu’ils bénéficient d’un diagnostic par PCR et 70.4% pour qu’ils bénéficient d’un traitement par hydroxychloroquine. Nous avons aussi pu mettre en évidence une relation significative entre un âge supérieur à 50 ans et une adhésion aux positions de l’IHU.Discussion : l’influence de l’IHU sur les généralistes marseillais au début de la crise semble être particulièrement bien mise en évidence dans cette étude. Cependant, elle suggère également par ses résultats l’existence d’un « fossé générationnel et méthodologique » en lien avec l’introduction tardive des concepts scientifiques de médecine factuelle dans la formation médicale et souligne aussi l’importance de facteurs socio-culturels loco-régionaux, tout particulièrement dans une ville à l’identité culturelle forte comme Marseille.

Abstract

Des origines de la ville jusqu’aux Trente Glorieuses, la banlieue agricole de Marseille (le terradou) se fonde, par-delà les limites de la cité, sur une polyculture dynamique. D’abord cultivée au sec puis irriguée grâce au canal de Marseille, elle est d’abord structurée par les domaines bastidaires des notables et de la bourgeoisie, puis par des usages plus populaires de la nature. C’est ainsi que se développent, durant les deux guerres mondiales, les jardins ouvriers et familiaux dont témoignent, aujourd’hui encore, les Jardins ouvriers et familiaux de Provence. A partir des années 1970, certains des reliquats agricoles de la périphérie sont mobilisés pour servir de fondement à la politique de création d’espaces verts entreprise par la Ville de Marseille dont est, par exemple, issu le parc de l’Oasis. Que doivent alors les jardins d’aujourd’hui à la banlieue agricole d’hier ? A cette question, le présent article conclut à un héritage bien plus symbolique que matériel dépendant de l’évolution des logiques d’irrigation. From the origins of the city until the Thirty Glorious Years, the agricultural suburbs of Marseille (the terradou) were based, beyond the city limits, on a dynamic polyculture. First cultivated in the dry, then irrigated thanks to the Marseille canal, it was first structured by the bastides of the notables and the bourgeoisie, then by more popular uses of nature. During the two world wars, allotments gardens were developed, and the Jardins ouvriers et familiaux de Provence still exist today. In the 1970s, some of the agricultural remnants of the periphery were mobilised to serve as the basis for the policy of creating green spaces undertaken by the City of Marseille, from which the Oasis Park was created. What do today's gardens owe to yesterday's agricultural suburbs? This article concludes that the heritage of today's gardens is much more symbolic than material and depends on the evolution of irrigation logics.

Abstract

Jòrgi Reboul is one of the great poets of twentieth century Marseille. Known for his innovative literary work which upset the codes of Occitan poetry in the early 1930s, he was also and above all a man of action, engaged in the defence of the Oc language and culture. A member of the Félibrige that he has viewed rather critically from the outset, he founded in 1925 Lou Calen de Marsiho which shone for nearly 60 years over the Phocaean city. He became involved in politics with the Parti Prouvençau for the elections of 1936, promoted teaching Provencal at school, founded and ran a youth hostel, assisted both in strengthening ties with the Catalans and in supporting them during the Spanish war. After World War II, he broke with the Félibrige to rally the Occitan wave and the IEO whilst continuing his actions in favour of teaching the Oc language, Catalans and the great fights of the 1960s- 1970. Under his leadership, the Calen soon became the cradle of the current CREO Provence.

La recherche présentée ici vise à compléter les connaissances actuelles sur la migration syrienne entre le Liban et les Etats-Unis à la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle. En particulier, elle propose de porter l’accent sur les phases de transit entre deux étapes du voyage dans des villes françaises (Marseille, Le Havre) et Américaines (New York). Dans une perspective comparatiste, l’accent est porté sur le développement d’une économie du transit, sur les diverses formes d’accueil dans ces villes et bien sûr sur les risques encourus par les migrants lors de ces séjours. Mais le questionnement s’élargit plus généralement à l’idée de la construction de savoir-faire individuels, familiaux ou collectifs face à ces risques. The research presented here is intended to complement current knowledge about "Syrian" migration between Lebanon and the United States in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. In particular, it focuses on transit cities in the journey to the US: two are French (Marseille and Le Havre) and one is American (New York). Using a comparative approach, the research examines the development of an economy of passage, the various ways immigrants were received in these cities, and the risks incurred by migrants during these transitory stays. Abstract

Introduction : l’état de santé des personnes détenus est un sujet peu étudié de nos jours. Une meilleure connaissance des caractéristiques sociales, somatiques, psychiatriques ou addictives de cette population à risque permettrait une meilleure prise en charge. Objectif : l’objectif principal de ce travail est de caractériser l’état sanitaire et sociodémographique des femmes et des hommes arrivant en détention au centre pénitentiaire des Baumettes à Marseille. Matériel et Méthode : cette étude épidémiologique descriptive a permis de recueillir des données sur 334 personnes arrivant en détention entre le 12 février 2022 et le 12 mai de 2022 grâce à un questionnaire uniformisé. Résultats : parmi les détenus de notre étude, 68% étaient de nationalité française avec une moyenne d’âge de 29.9 ans. Moins de 10% ont obtenu le baccalauréat et plus de 50% étaient sans emploi. Sur le plan sanitaire, les détenus présentent peu de pathologie aiguë grave à leur arrivée mais il existe une surreprésentation des troubles psychiatriques (>50%), des troubles addictifs (>80%) et des traumatismes (>30%). 258. Analyse de la filière post-urgence 'thrombose veineuse profonde' au sein des urgences de l'Hôpital Nord

Abstract

Introduction : depuis 2019, une filière de consultation post-urgence (CPU) a été mise en place au sein des urgences de l’Hôpital Nord permettant une réorientation des patients suspects de thrombose veineuse profonde (TVP) vers une consultation dédiée pour réaliser une échographie Doppler afin d’établir une confirmation diagnostic rapide et sécurisée tout en diminuant la durée moyenne de séjour dans le contexte actuel de tension des services d’urgences. Objectif : évaluer l’efficacité de la filière CPU TVP des urgences de l’Hôpital Nord via l’application des recommandations HAS avec le dosage des D-dimères adaptés selon le score de Wells, l’anti-coagulation à la sortie des urgences et la confirmation diagnostic en CPU. Les objectifs secondaires étant de déterminer si la filière actuelle permet une prise en charge sécurisée des patients, et d’en déterminer les axes d’améliorations. Méthodes : il s’agit d’une étude rétrospective, épidémiologique, observationnelle, mono-centrique à propos de 194 patients admis dans la filière CPU TVP entre le 10 Mai 2019 et le 8 Décembre 2021. Résultats : dans notre étude, le taux de sous-prescription des D-dimères était de 26,4% pour le sous-groupe probabilité faible ou intermédiaire selon le score de Wells et le taux de sur-prescription était de 65,2% pour le sous-groupe probabilité élevée. En attendant la confirmation échographique, 80% des patients de notre étude ont eu une anti-coagulation efficace à la sortie des urgences majoritairement par Fondaparinux (55%). 157 patients se sont rendus à leur rendez-vous d’échographie Doppler, prévu dans les 48h en moyenne, soit une observance à la consultation post-urgence de 80,9%. Au total, 89 patients soit 46% des patients inclus ont eu une prise en charge optimale selon les recommandations HAS. Aucun n’a présenté d’événements hémorragiques majeurs et seul un patient a présenté un effet indésirable bénin. 1,5 % des patients ont présentés des complications à type d’embolie pulmonaire, syndrome post-TVP et récidive de TVP. Pour améliorer nos pratiques, il est objectivé la nécessité d’harmoniser les prescriptions biologiques des D-dimères selon le score de Wells et la prescription d’anticoagulants. Conclusion : l’organisation actuelle de la filière de CPU TVP à l’Hôpital Nord permet une prise en charge efficace avec un taux d'anti-coagulation curative important, un taux de re-convocation élevé et dans un délai précoce pour la réalisation d’une échographie Doppler, avec aucun incident hémorragique majeur et peu de complications secondaires aux TVP. Il semble intéressant d’étudier l’intégration de l’échographie 4 points, sous utilisée dans notre étude, dans les algorithmes de prise en charge des TVP.

Abstract

This paper builds on a research we carried out in Marseille at the time of the first lockdown among a group of sex workers and aims to understand how they reacted to the reduction or of work imposed by the lockdown. Among the most vulnerable populations, sex workers were particularly affected by the pandemic; however, the lockdown did not engender the same distress for all the people we interviewed. It acted more as a revealing factor: it revealed and deepened the inequalities specific to the sex workers’ population, which are linked to nationality, migratory status, type of activity and social origin, without being the cause of them. Sex workers’ coping strategies drew on complementary "resource pools": they mixed recourse to informal solidarity, that of peer networks, with recourse to formal solidarity, that of associations. The lack of a joint militant response, which we observed, does not imply the absence of a collective dimension in the response to the crisis. On the contrary, at the time of the first lockdown, the collective dimension was central, but it was mobilized in the form of community networks, always in an informal way and invisible to outsiders., Cette enquête a été réalisée au temps du premier confinement auprès d’un groupe de travailleuses et travailleurs du sexe (TDS) de Marseille et vise à comprendre comment iels se sont réorganisé.e.s face à la diminution ou à l’arrêt du travail imposés par le confinement. Parmi les populations les plus vulnérable, les TDS ont été particulièrement affecté.e.s par la pandémie, cependant le confinement n’a pas entrainé la même situation de détresse pour toutes les personnes que nous avons interviewé.e.s. Le confinement a fonctionné plutôt comme un révélateur : il a dévoilé et creusé les inégalités propres à la population des TDS, qui sont liées à la nationalité, au statut de migrant.e, au type d’activité exercée et à l’origine sociale, sans pour autant en être la cause. Les stratégies de réponse des TDS, face à cette crise, sont des stratégies de maximisation qui puisent dans des « bassins de ressources » complémentaires : elles mélangent le recours à la solidarité informelle, celle des réseaux d’entraide entre pairs, au recours à la solidarité formelle, celle des associations. Le manque d’engagement militant collectif, que nous avons observé auprès de la population d’enquête, n’implique pas l’absence d’une dimension collective dans la réponse à la crise. A l’époque du premier confinement, au contraire, la dimension collective a été centrale, mais elle a été mobilisée sous la forme de réseaux communautaires, toujours de manière informelle et invisible à un regard extérieur.

Abstract

This thesis examines the history and the current practices (popularity, service styles, and recipes) of the Provencal dish bouillabaisse. It aims to establish the evolution and the traditional characteristics of the dish. It also explores the historical and contemporary popularity as well as the everyday role that bouillabaisse plays in the regional identity of Provencal cooking. Finally, the research questions if bouillabaisse would benefit from a European Union quality schemes protection or official recognition by UNESCO. This research uses an exploratory sequential mixed methods model combining qualitative and quantitative data collection which are analysed in a sequence of phases. The primary data was collected through a combination of questionnaires and interviews, and combined with the analysis of manuscripts and printed cookbooks using Wheaton’s methodology. The results show that bouillabaisse’s main transformation occurred at the turn of the nineteenth century when the dish’s status was elevated in order to appeal to the upper-classes. The results also show that the codification of the dish created two predominant styles of bouillabaisse; one anchored in its place of origin, Provence, and another that permitted the dish to travel beyond France. Towards the end of the twentieth century, bouillabaisse became unpopular as a household meal, resulting in the development in Marseille of a new invented tradition where it is now local custom to eat bouillabaisse in restaurants on Sundays and special occasions. Additional findings note that bouillabaisse could benefit from a European Union quality schemes protection or being inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Although these processes might prove to be difficult, the notable characteristics of the dish combined with the new tradition, would suggest an eventual possibility.

Abstract

Waste picking is an old practice, whereby profit is gained by recovering recyclable materials from discarded objects and reintroducing them into the formal and informal economic circuits. Recycling and recovery of waste in urban centres in the Global South has been the subject of a number of studies. However, this activity also exists in more affluent cities. Based on research carried out in Turin (Italy) and Marseille (France), in this paper we analyse waste picking by Roma communities, showing that this activity not only provides them with an income from the sale of recycled objects and materials but also allows them to assemble their access to the city and its multiple resources –people, objects, spaces. Only the recognition of the Roma as workers and citizens beyond any imposed normalisation can bring about a change in the way their being-in-the-city is considered both at a social, economic and political level. Abstract

During the Second World War Germany established its southern front or Südwall, running from the Spanish to the Italian borders and following the Marseille coastline, as a defensive line against an Allied invasion. The defenses served the Wehrmacht, who occupied the area from 1943, and to this day remnants of the military bunkers and forts can be seen in Marseille, on the white rocky coast of the Calanques and on surrounding islands, such as the Îles du Frioul. Unlike the Atlantic bunkers in Brittany and Normandy, the history of the Südwall is not well known. My series of photographs seeks to unearth these fortifications, which, because they are built of concrete, are virtually integrated into the rocky landscape of the coast. Were it not for the colourful graffiti and images that adorn them, they would vanish into the landscape, like camouflaged soldiers. I am not interested in a study of anthropomorphic forms, but in the form of the landscape itself as an environment for the bunkers, which through their stonelike character have become the landscape. The Südwall has changed over the decades from a fortress to ruins and architectural relics. Nature and man-made construction have become woven together into a unified matrix. Some bunkers were later transformed into homes in which people now live. In one of my images there is a stone memorial that reminds us of the victims of war - three resistance fighters who died young and are now present only by name: Jean Odelin, seventreen years old, Serge Loiseau, nineteen years old and Jaques Baby, twenty-three years old. The Südwall is a memorial to the conflicted history of Germany and France and the catastrophe of two world wars. This former line of defence - part of Hitler's Fortress Europe - reminds us that the Europe of today, a peaceful union of different countries, can not be taken for granted. It is fragile. 264. Quantifying daily contributions of source regions to PM concentrations in Marseille based on the trails of incoming air masses.

Abstract

The hourly trails (trajectory points) of incoming air masses have been used in this study in order to compose independent variables for the quantification of regional PM10 and PM2.5 contributions in Marseille (Southern France), and also for the estimation of the atmospheric dispersion effect. These prediction variables were used as input for a Multiple Linear Regression Model (MLRM) in order to estimate daily PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in Marseille. For a more exact localization of fine and coarse particle sources, during cold and warm period, our analysis was supplemented by the findings of Concentration Weighted Trajectory (CWT) algorithm on a 0.5°·0.5° resolution grid. A strong coherence was revealed among measured and estimated daily levels of PM10 and PM2.5; thus, the proposed MLRM can be a useful tool for assessing air quality in terms of atmospheric circulation. Increased PM contributions in Marseille from local and all-around emission sources were indicated by MLRM primarily within cold seasons. In addition, Northeast (NE) atmospheric circulation was associated by MLRM and CWT with extreme intrusions of exogenous particulate air pollution from Central Europe, during winter and early spring. Throughout warm period, the scarceness of NE airflows prevented the transportation of aerosols from continental Europe. Episodes of desert dust transportation from Northwest Africa (Algeria and Tunisia) had a clear footprint in the PMCOARSE (=PM10-PM2.5) fraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A sailing replica based on the archaeological remains and structural analysis of the 6th‐century archaic Greek sewn boat Jules‐Verne 9 was built in Marseille as part of the city's European Capital of Culture 2013 programme. Full‐scale reconstruction allowed investigation of specific aspects of the methods used to build a shell‐first, sewn‐plank, and lashed‐frame vessel, as well as learning the gestures and know‐how of the original shipbuilders. The first two seasons of sailing trials, including short journeys in the Bay of Marseille and longer, coast‐hopping expeditions, reflecting the uses of the original vessel have taken place and are reported here. International audience; The informal domination of Marseille’s economic circles in Africa (1815-1880): actors, issues, limitsDuring the nineteenth century, the port of Marseille opened up fully to Africa. To Algeria, of course, but also to Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Western and Eastern coasts of Africa, and Madagascar. The interest of Marseille economic circles for Africa was both gradual and multi-directional. It responded to two successive economic strategies that were closely linked but still differed significantly in some notable respects: the quest for commercial expansion by agreement with the incumbent African rulers (1815-1880), excepting the somewhat exceptional case of Algeria; and, from the 1880s onwards, the desire to frame their economic activities within colonial rule. This article focus on the first historical sequence and intend to question the degree of relevance of a number of concepts – “informai empire”, “libéral imperialism” or “imperialism of free trade” – in characterizing the relations between Marseille economic circles and Africa from 1815 to 1880.; Au cours du xixe siècle le port de Marseille s’ouvre pleinement à l’Afrique. À l’Algérie, bien évidemment, mais aussi à la Tunisie, au Maroc, à l’Égypte, à la Libye, aux rivages de l’Ouest et de l’Est africain et à Madagascar. L’intérêt des milieux économiques marseillais pour l’Afrique est à la fois progressif et tous azimuts. Il correspond à deux positionnements politiques successifs qui entretiennent entre eux des liens étroits, tout en offrant des discontinuités notables : la recherche, hormis le cas un peu particulier de l’Algérie, d’une expansion commerciale dans le cadre d’une entente avec les autorités africaines en place (1815-1880) ; le souhait d’inscrire leur activité économique dans un cadre colonial à partir des années 1880-1890. Cet article vise à étudier la première séquence de cette histoire et à analyser le niveau d’opérabilité d’un certain nombre de notions – « empire informel », « impérialisme libéral » ou « impérialisme du libre-échange » – pour caractériser les relations entre les milieux économiques marseillais et l’Afrique au cours des années 1815-1880.

Abstract

The archaeological excavations of Place Jules-Verne in Marseille, France, at the beginning of the 1990s revealed three ancient sister­ships (JV3, JV4 and JV5) abandoned near the shoreline around AD 100. These shipwrecks feature a central cavity, which made them difficult to identify. Medieval sources have now helped us to identify them as hopper barges designed to pickup sludge from the bottom of the harbour and to carry and dump it in another place by means of a ‘door’ we can now reconstruct in the bottom of the barge hull. Les fouilles archéologiques de la place Jules-Verne à Marseille, en 1993, ont révélé les vestiges de trois bateaux antiques tout à fait similaires (JV 3, 4 et 5) abandonnés près du rivage vers l’an 100 apr. J.-C. Ces épaves présentent une cavité rectangulaire au centre de la carène au niveau du fond. Cette caractéristique a rendu leur interprétation difficile. Néanmoins, les sources médiévales ont permis de les rapprocher des gabarres à vase conçues pour évacuer les vases du port et les déverser au large en ouvrant la trappe de fond.

Abstract

This paper aims to contribute to knowledge on the level of metropolitan governance through the analysis of a specific case: the Marseille metropolis in southern France. Marseille is broadly considered a postindustrial city in crisis, which has failed to achieve a functional transformation and a change of narrative in the age of globalisation. Over the last two decades, however, processes of regionalised and integrated metropolisation have had an impact on the city's urban renaissance prospects. The paper identifies three central projects, which symbolically represent and concretely articulate different axes of Marseille's metropolisation processes: Euroméditerranée (1995-*), The European Capital of Culture Marseille-Provence 2013 and the institutional creation of the Métropole d'Aix-Marseille-Provence . This paper proposes to approach metropolisation as a multi-dimensional phenomenon. Drawing on the three aforementioned cases, we analyse the different territorial-spatial scales affected, as well as the various geographic scales of governance stakeholders involved. Reflecting on their scopes of impact, the aim of the study is to investigate the challenges and opportunities of multi-scalar metropolisation for Aix-Marseille-Provence, and to discuss to what extent this conflictual plurality might be promising (or not) for better consensual metropolitan integration in the future. In conclusion, we show that the study on metropolisation in the Marseille region, including the region's unique features, successes and failures, sheds light on and contributes to a better understanding of the evolution of other metropolises of a similar size in France and Europe. Dieser Beitrag liefert Erkenntnisse auf der Ebene der metropolitanen Governance und analysiert zu diesem Zweck ein konkretes Beispiel: die südfranzösische Metropole Marseille. Marseille wird weithin als Großstadt erachtet, die sich in einer postindustriellen Krise befindet: Sie hat es verpasst, einen funktionalen Wandel zu vollziehen und sich an die veränderten Rahmenbedingungen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung anzupassen. Regionalisierte und integrierte Metropolisierungsprozesse haben in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten jedoch die Aussichten auf eine urbane Renaissance der Großstadt verbessert. Der Beitrag stellt drei zentrale Projekte vor, die die einzelnen Teile der Metropolisierungsprozesse von Marseille sowohl symbolisch darstellen als auch konkretisieren: Euroméditerranée (seit 1995), die Europäische Kulturhauptstadt "Marseille-Provence" 2013 und die institutionelle Gründung der Métropole d'Aix-Marseille-Provence . Dieser Beitrag schlägt einen Ansatz vor, der die Metropolisierung als multidimensionales Phänomen erachtet. Aufbauend auf den drei genannten Beispielprojekten werden die einzelnen relevanten territorial-räumlichen Ebenen und die verschiedenen räumlichen Dimensionen der beteiligten Governance-Akteure analysiert. Mit dem Ziel, die Herausforderungen und Chancen der mehrdimensionalen Metropolisierung von Aix-Marseille-Provence zu untersuchen, analysiert der Beitrag den Wirkungsbereich der Projekte und diskutiert, inwiefern diese konfliktreiche Pluralität zukünftig zu einer besseren und konsensorientierten metropolitanen Integration beitragen kann. Abschließend soll unter Berücksichtigung der Besonderheiten, Erfolge und Fehlschläge dieser Region gezeigt werden, dass die Studie über die Metropolisierung von Marseille für die Entwicklung von ähnlich großen Metropolen Frankreichs und Europas neue Erkenntnisse liefert und zu einem tiefgreifenderen Verständnis beiträgt.

271. Des corsaires castillans à Marseille: mercenaires de la mer ou acteurs du commerce méditerranéen (XIVe et XVe siècles)?

À partir de la fin du XIVe siècle, la présence à Marseille de corsaires venus de la Couronne de Castille apparaît de plus en plus importante dans les archives provençal es. Ceux que les documents notariés appellent «yspani» profitent des guerres menées par les souverains angevins ainsi que du conflit qui oppose après 1423 la Provence à la Couronne d’Aragon pour venir prêter leurs services aux rois de la seconde maison d’Anjou et au gouvernement urbain de Marseille. En s’appuyant sur un corpus documentaire inédit provenant des archives municipales de Marseille et des archives départementales des Bouches-du-Rhône, cet article s'interroge sur la place et le rôle de ces hommes dans le contexte marseillais des années 1380-1430. À travers quatre trajectoires singulières, il est possible d’identifier deux «modèles» de corsaires: d’une part les grands mercenaires castillans qui s’engagent auprès des souverains et auprès du pape et qui peuvent être considérés comme des experts de la guerre maritime et, de l’autre, des patrons de navires qui exercent également comme marchands et qui profitent après 1423 des opportunités commerciales fournies par une ville en guerre pour venir s’installer à Marseille. Par leurs mobilités et par les liens profonds qu’ils entretiennent avec les cités, ces corsaires peuvent être considérés comme des acteurs de la connectivité méditerranéenne., From the end of the 14th century, the presence in Marseille of privateers coming from the Crown of Castile appears increasingly important in the Provençal archives. Those whom notarial documents called «yspani» took advantage of the wars led by the Angevin sovereigns as well as the conflict that opposed Provence to the Crown of Aragon after 1423 to come and lend their services to the kings of the second house of Anjou and to the urban government of Marseille. Based on an unpublished corpus of documents from the municipal archives of Marseille and the departmental archives of the Bouches-du-Rhône, this paper examines the position and role of these men in the Marseille context of the years 1380-1430. Through four singular trajectories, it is possible to distinguish two «models» of privateers: on the one hand, the great Castilian mercenaries who were committed to the sovereigns and the Pope and who could be considered experts in maritime warfare, and on the other, the ship's captains who also worked as merchants and who, after 1423, took advantage of the commercial opportunities provided by a city at war to come and settle in Marseille. These privateers, because of their mobility and because of the links they maintain with the cities, can be considered as actors of the Mediterranean connectivity.

272. Urban Improvisation: Research and design about resedents' spontaneous architectural and urban practice in Marseille

Abstract

Starting from a port, Marseille was born as the result of improvisation and spontaneous architectures rather than urban planning. Same things happened in the architecture scale. architects are not the only doers of architecture. Long after the building has been made the non-architects continuously do architecture. When non-architects occupy space, they start to ‘do-it-themselves’. In most cases, they do this in an already occupied territory, where the activity of doing architecture has been classified and claimed by architects - the rules have already been established. But there are also some space occupations that are out of the rules, such as squatting, vendors, graffiti, protest. They, like “pet architecture”, do not necessarily create appealing spaces, and some are even illegal, but they can highlight people’s demands and show people’s bottom-up determination to shape the city. When people do the practice, they mainly based on their own current needs and what material they have instead of considering the building or city as a whole. These practices are spontaneous, unplanned makeshift and ad hoc. They can be seen as improvisational practice. Seen architecture as paintings, in these cases, their improvisational activities are more like a collage rather than fully considered composition. But as Jencks explains, it involves using an available system in a new way to solve a problem quickly and efficiently. By doing so, it offers a way for everyone to shape and discuss the city they live in. And for the public, there should be nothing preventing them, in an agonistic and participatory manner, from devising and debating forms of their shelter and space for daily life. The improvisational practice has itself taken inspiration: Another world is possible.

273. Reclaiming the landscape: an alternative understanding of the waste cycle in Marseille

As a major transit city on the Mediterranean, Marseille’s urban history and landscape are largely defined by the continuous flows of matter and energy over time. Amongst these interwoven flows, the waste flow is one of the striking focal points. This is not only because the city of Marseille has historically struggled to escape its "dirty" reputation, but also because of its urban landscape today, which has been constantly reshaped by waste as a result of various natural and social events. In this project, the site of research is further targeted at the area near the estuary of the Huveaune River where waste and water flows densely intersect in the city. Abstract

In this article, we will compare Marseille and Milan, as well as the social (and digital) practices of young people living in two neighbourhoods: LaFab in the third district—one of the poorest areas of the French city—and San Siro—one of the largest social housing areas of the Italian one. These young people were born in France and Italy, but their parents are mostly of African origins. This comparative analysis is carried out at three interdependent levels: the youth policies, the ethnographic study of young people practices, and the imaginaries they (re)create. In conclusion, we will show how social exclusion intersects with spatial marginalisation and how, in the two cities, groups of young people (through music production, ngo projects, or illicit drug-trafficking networks) have developed glocally-oriented strategies to create self-determination and creativity spaces as an alternative to such structural obstacles.

A study conducted by Aix-Marseille University in France aimed to evaluate the incidence of bladder cancer (BCa) in patients with neurological diseases that cause neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injury (SCI), and spina bifida (SB).
