Background: Studying the outcomes in patients presenting with cardiogenic shock with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (CS-STEMI) and undergoing primary or rescue percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) may give an insight to the unmet needs in STEMI-care in our region and may help in future recommendations in improving survival. Materials and methodolgy: During the period from January 2001- June 2017, there were 114 patients included in the study. The demographic, clinical and angiographic characteristics were compared between the survivors and non-survivors. All these variables were also compared between two-time frames (Phase 1- January 2001 to June 2007; Phase 2- July 2007 to June 2017). Results: Among patients undergoing PCI for STEMI, 7.5% were in cardiogenic shock. In-hospital mortality for the patients included in the study was 53.5%. Total ischemic time (OR = 0.99, 0.99–1; p = 0.02), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (OR = 0.90, 0.82–0.98; p = 0.02), need for cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (OR = 0.12, 0.24–0.66; p = 0.01), and post PCI TIMI flows (OR = 0.08, 0.02–0.29; p

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) and Cypermethrin (CPM) are toxic and subject to long-term in vivo accumulation in different aquatic species throughout the world. The purpose of the present study was to examine the combined CPF/CPM (Nurocombi) exposure on histology in various tissues of Paratelphusa jacquemontii. The crabs were exposed to combined CPF/CPM concentrations of 0.0187 ppm and 0.0374 ppm (sub lethal) for 28 days with parallel untreated control. The experimental gill tissue exhibited epithelial lifting, edema, necrosis, fusion of secondary lamellae and hemorrhage. The deceased hepatopancreas revealed infiltration, formation of large lumen and disappearance of haemocytes. The pathologic symptoms like atrophy, necrosis, wavy appearance, accumulation of granular material in between muscle fibers, fragmentation, loss of muscle structure, appearance of basophilic deposits were displayed in the muscle tissue. The vas deferens showed remarkable epithelial vacuolar degeneration, irregular appearance of spermatophore matrix associated with reduction in the number of spermatophores and dehiscence of most of the spermatophores. It is concluded that histological biomarkers provide reliable and discriminatory data to augment pesticide pollution and therefore, long-term monitoring is necessary to assess the eco-health of the mangrove system.

Background and Objective: The Newborn Survival Case study in Rwanda provides an analysis of the newborn health and survival situation in the country. It reviews evidence-based interventions and coverage levels already implemented in the country; identifies key issues and bottlenecks in service delivery and uptake of services by community/beneficiaries, and provides key recommendations aimed at faster reduction in newborn mortality rate. Methods: This study utilized mixed method research including qualitative and quantitative analyses of various maternal and newborn health programs implemented in the country. This included interviewing key stakeholders at each level, field visits and also interviewing beneficiaries for assessment of uptake of services. Monitoring systems such as Health Management Information Systems (HMIS), maternal and newborn death audits were reviewed and data analyzed to aid these analyses. Results: Policies, protocols, various guidelines and tools for monitoring are already in place however, implementation of these remains a challenge e.g. infection control practices to reduce deaths due to sepsis. Although existing staff are quite knowledgeable and are highly motivated, however, shortage of health personnel especially doctors in an issue. New facilities are being operationalized e.g. at Gisenyi, however, the existing facilities needs expansion. Conclusion and Global Health Implications: It is essential to implement high impact evidence based interventions but coverage levels need to be significantly high in order to achieve higher reduction in newborn mortality rate. Equity approach should be considered in planning so that the services are better implemented and the poor and needy can get the benefits of public health programs. Copper is most toxic metal in marine organisms. Characterization of protein occurring in the metabolically active tissues of muscle (MU), hepatopancreas (HP) and gills (GL) of the spiny lobster, Panulirus homarus homarus on exposure to two sub-lethal doses (9.55 and 19.1 µg/l) of copper were studied for 28 days of exposure (DoE). The electrophoretic pattern of muscle, hepatopancreas and gill proteins revealed 12, 8 and 8 slow moving bands (control). The number of bands decreased to 8 and 7, 6 and 5, 6 and 4 after 7 days of exposure to 9.55 µg/l and 19.1 µg/l concentrations of copper, respectively. After 28 days, the protein bands decreased to 7 and 6, 5 and 4, 4 and 4 at 9.55 µg/l and 19.1 µg/l concentrations of copper, respectively. Present study to indicate that to avoid the Cupro-Nickel coil in lobster holding centers in chiller plants used for cooling of water was found to be responsible for the mortality of lobsters during live transportation.

Idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningtis is a rare inflammatory disorder affecting the dura mater. A 39-year-old diabetic male presented with left sixth nerve paresis along with ophthalmic and hypoglossal nerve involvement. Neuroimaging is an important tool for the neuroophthalmologist in such cases where it can point to a diagnosis as well as exclude common conditions like ischemic neuropathy in the absence of more invasive diagnostic tests. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in our case revealed features suggestive of hypertrophic pachymeningitis. Secondary causes were ruled out with extensive investigations and the patient improved completely with systemic corticosteroids.

Background. Interprofessional education provides students of healthcare programme an opportunity to collaborate with students from other disciplines and help them to get a training prior to entering the healthcare workforce. This study may help to select a suitable tool to discriminate attitude differences of healthcare professional students towards interprofessional education. Methods. A study, which was cross-sectional, was conducted at a private university in Malaysia to explore the two scales (RIPLS and IEPS) and their psychometric properties. Study participants comprised students from four different professions with at least one exposure or no previous exposure to IPE. Results. Both the scales (RIPLS and IEPS) have their own ability to detect differences in students’ attitude towards IPE in their own way. However, the IEPS scale was able to detect differences within the gender, professions (both junior and senior students), and prior exposure to IPE. Conclusions. This study revealed that though both scales can be used to follow the impact of IPE in curricula, IEPS scale is more suitable than RIPLS to discriminate attitude differences among healthcare students. Educators may develop various strategies to observe students’ behaviours and perceptions qualitatively and conduct longitudinal study to assess the outcomes of including IPE in curricula.

The antifouling activity of bioactive compounds from marine sponge Acanthella elongata (Dendy) and five species of bacterial biofilm were studied. Larvae of Balanus amphitrite (Cyprids and nauplii) were used to monitor the settlement inhibition and the extent to which inhibition was due to toxicity. The crude extract and partially purified fractions of A.elongata showed significant inhibition over the settlement individually, and with the interaction of bacterial species. No bacterial film stimulated the barnacle settlement. The high but variable levels of antifouling activity in combination with less amount of toxicity showed the potential of these metabolites in environmentally-friendly antifouling preparations.

Li-ion batteries are used in many applications in everyday life: cell phones, laser pointers, laptops, cordless drillers or saws, bikes and even cars. Yet, there is room for improvement in order to make the batteries smaller and last longer. The Fromm group contributes to this research focusing mainly on nanoscale lithium ion cathode materials. This contribution gives an overview over our current activities in the field of batteries. After an introduction on the nano-materials of LiCoO2 and LiMnPO4, the studies of our cathode composition and preparation will be presented.

Cancer detection in its early stages is imperative for effective cancer treatment and patient survival. In recent years, biomedical imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography and ultrasound have been greatly developed and have served pivotal roles in clinical cancer management. Molecular imaging (MI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that monitors biological processes at the cellular and sub-cellular levels. To achieve these goals, MI uses targeted imaging agents that can bind targets of interest with high specificity and report on associated abnormalities, a task that cannot be performed by conventional imaging techniques. In this respect, MI holds great promise as a potential therapeutic tool for the early diagnosis of cancer. Nevertheless, the clinical applications of targeted imaging agents are limited due to their inability to overcome biological barriers inside the body. The use of nanoparticles has made it possible to overcome these limitations. Hence, nanoparticles have been the subject of a great deal of recent studies. Therefore, developing nanoparticle-based imaging agents that can target tumors via active or passive targeting mechanisms is desirable. This review focuses on the applications of various functionalized nanoparticle-based imaging agents used in MI for the early detection of cancer.

Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study was to report clinical features, neuroimaging, and visual outcome in pediatric optic neuritis (ON) in Indian population., Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study of children up to the age of 16 years, diagnosed with ON, that presented at pediatric and neuroophthalmology clinic of a tertiary eye care center, in South India, within the period of 2010-2015., Results: We identified 62 eyes of 40 children diagnosed as ON within the study period. The mean age was 11.15 ± 3.24 years (1-15 years) with mean follow-up of 13 months. In this series, there was female preponderance (67%). Mean logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution visual acuity at presentation was 1.14 ± 0.93, which after treatment recovered to 0.10 ± 0.26 at final visit (P < 0.001). Involvement was bilateral in 22 children (55%) and recurrent in 3 eyes of 3 children. Preceding febrile illness was reported in seven cases (18%). Four (10%) cases were diagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS), one with neuromyelitis optica , and one with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. One case was associated with tuberculous meningitis, 1 with septicemia, and 1 with bilateral maxillary sinusitis. Neuroimaging studies of optic nerve in 14 children demonstrated isolated optic nerve enhancement. Magnetic resonance imaging brain revealed white matter T2 hyperintense lesions separate from optic nerve in ten cases, of which four cases were diagnosed as MS., Conclusions: Bilateral presentation was common, association with MS was low. Papillitis was more frequent than retrobulbar neuritis and prognosis was good in pediatric ON in Indian population.

Purpose: To discuss the role of choroidal drainage in the management of positive vitreous pressure during therapeutic keratoplasty for patients with perforated corneal ulcers., Methods: Over a 2-year period, 8 of 36 (22%) consecutive patients with therapeutic grafts presented with a shallow anterior chamber during or immediately after surgery. These patients underwent choroidal drainage for formation of the anterior chamber. In 5 of them choroidal drainage was done intraoperatively when there was significant positive vitreous pressure and the anterior chamber could not be formed. Three patients had drainage within a week postoperatively for persistent shallow anterior chamber when ultrasonogram showed choroidal detachment., Results: Of the eight cases, seven drained fluid and the chamber could be reformed well. One was a dry tap and the chamber did not reform completely., Conclusion: Choroidal detachment (CD) is a previously unpublished cause for positive vitreous pressure in therapeutic keratoplasty for perforated corneal ulcers. In these situations suprachoroidal drainage can be considered as an option for the reformation of the anterior chamber. We recommend that a preoperative B-scan ultrasound be included in the workup of all corneal perforations and that intraoperative drainage of the fluid is considered in cases with significant positive vitreous pressure and confirmed CD.

This study describes the spatio-temporal expression of basic Fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) during odontogenesis of mouse as revealed by immunohistology. Parasagittal sections of mouse embryo head (13-18 day of gestation) containing various stages of developing tooth were incubated with a polyclonal anti-FGF-2 antibody and positive binding was evidentiated by using Streptavidin-Biotin complex-HRP system and AEC staining. We observed no FGF-2 staining at the dental lamina stage. At the bud stage slight staining is seen, limited to some epithelial cells. The intensity of the staining increases at the cap stage. In the bell stage, the stellate reticulum cells stain intensely. Later, odontoblasts and the dentin matrix stain deeply; but the epithelial cells stain faint. The extra cellular matrix of the dentin and dental papilla stain very intense but the enamel matrix is found negative. These results indicate the participation of FGF-2 in differentiation rather than in proliferation of tooth-forming cells. In particular, it appears that FGF-2 participates in odontoblast differentiation and in dentin matrix deposition. The spatio-temporally specific distribution pattern of FGF-2 in developing mouse tooth reported here emphasizes the importance of FGF-2 in mammalian odontogenesis.

Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical gas, has recently been recognized as an important messenger molecule having a neurotransmitter-like function. Studies on the localization of the enzyme synthesizing NO (NO synthase-NOS) have indicated its presence in almost all parts of the brain with a prevalence in the cerebellum. From recent experimental investigations it is apparent that NO might meet the essential criteria to function as a retrograde messenger for Long-term potentiation in hippocampal cells, a process known to be involved in mammalian learning and memory. However, within the hippocampus NO is present in a few cell types which probably form the local neuronal circuit. Thus NO might function as a paracrine factor rather than a retrograde messenger in the hippocampal neurons.

Morphogenesis of vertebrate limb, specifically that of the chick wing, has been recognized as a suitable model to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of pattern formation. The importance of cellular inductive phenomena and the relevance of the processes such as cell division and cell death in the above model are discussed. These studies have revealed the retinoic acid (RA) and retinols as convincing candidates for vertebrate morphogens. The recent discovery that the RA receptors belong to the steroid hormone receptor superfamily might indicate the universality of the RA morphogen and might enlighten the possible mode of its action. Identification and characterization of the 1d locus genes associated with the mouse limb morphogenesis and the possible involvement of the homeobox proteins in chick wing development have opened new prospects in understanding the molecular mechanisms of vertebrate morphogenesis.

Earlier studies have shown that pregnant and nonpregnant mammalian uteri respond differently to tumor cell invasion, colonization and metastasis, but the biological basis of such differential uterine response has not been clarified. In the present study we have investigated the role of the metastatic potential of the tumor in the differential response of different stages of mouse uteri, using a highly metastatic tumor. The results obtained were compared with earlier data obtained using low metastatic or nonmetastatic tumors. Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cells were infused nonsurgically into nonpregnant uteri of various estrus stages and into pregnant uteri on day 3 postcoitum. Response of the uteri and embryos was studied histologically on days 2, 5 and 18 posttreatment (p.t.). The embryonic development was severely inhibited resulting in extensive resorption. In the tumor cell-treated animals, despite an early and uniform invasion the patterns of tumor cell colonization and metastasis differed remarkably from the pregnant to nonpregnant uteri. On day 5 p.t. 66% of nonpregnant animals showed tumor cells in the endometrium and 40% had tumor metastasis in other organs. Though 40% of the pregnant animals had tumor cells in the uteri, none had metastasis in other organs. By day 18 p.t., despite the absence of tumor cells in the uteri, 75% of nonpregnant animals showed metastasis in lung and liver. In pregnant animals, tumor cells were seen neither in uteri nor in other organs studied. These results indicate the refractory nature of both the pregnant and nonpregnant mouse uteri to the survival and colonization of LLC cells, but the mechanisms by which the tumor cells are eliminated differ between these two types of uteri.

5-azacytidine (5-azaCR), an analogue of cytidine, inhibits nuclear DNA methylation in early sea urchin embryos. This inhibition is specific and dose-dependent. Exposure of sea urchin embryos at any stage between one-cell and blastula, to micromolar quantities of 5-azaCR invariably inhibits development beyond the blastula stage. In a substantial number of embryos arrested at the blastula stage, spicule formation proceeds although other morphological differentiation is lacking. No significant effect on development is seen if sea urchin embryos are exposed to 5-azaCR at post-blastula stages. 5-azaCR also inhibits the development of a mosaic egg such as the ascidian Phallusia mammilata at the blastula stage, indicating that both regulative (sea urchin) and mosaic (ascidian) embryos respond more or less similarly to 5-azaCR treatment.
