The Breadwinner film is one of the films that have elements related to gender in it. The approach of this research is a qualitative descriptive research type, with data analysis using the method of Miles and Huberman. The semiotic analysis used the Roland Barthes analysis model which divides the stages into three, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of this study are that gender in this film has a denotative meaning where women have demands to behave and act according to their environment, a connotative meaning where people put a lot of emphasis on how women should behave through verbal utterances, and myths about culture taken from one interpretation of the verses of the Al-Quran regarding women. After the collapse of the USSR, the worldview guidelines of a person in the post-Soviet era lost their values. Man was forced to rethink his ideological guidelines and spiritual values. What a person believed in has become worthless. Man again faced the question of establishing new ideological guidelines and spiritual values. Thus, the questions became actual - what is sacred and sacred in human existence, where are their sources. Where is the guarantee that after a certain time they will not depreciate? Consequently, issues of myth making are still relevant today. In this article, the authors have set themselves the following goal - to analyze the influence of mythological and religious worldview universals on the existence of modern man. Depending on this, a person determines his role and place in the world. The influence of these universals not only determine a person's place in the world, but also give a visual picture of the world, that is, its time and space of existence. The scientific and practical significance of this study is due to the fact that post-Soviet people, having "freed themselves" from some ideals blindly, did not believe other false ideals. Without spiritual guidelines and worldviews, a person wanders in the labyrinths of freedom. An example of this is such negative phenomena of our time as terrorism and religious extremism. Freud’s very brief 1922 paper on the beheading of Medusa by Perseus wisely concludes with a call for a further examination of the sources of the legend. A now widespread interpretation of this legend is based (often without acknowledgement) on an addition to traditions concerning Medusa made in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. It is argued here that this Ovidian innovation has often been misinterpreted, and that a more careful reading of Metamorphoses supports neither a widely alleged exclusively vengeful portrayal of Medusa, nor Freud’s portrayal of Medusa’s decapitation as solely a pitiable and terrible symbol of castration. Instead, Ovid’s complex treatments of myths involving Medusa, Minerva and Perseus present parallels with Kleinian insights into phantasy attacks on fecundity, and into imagined revivals of dead or damaged inside babies. Thus the “displacement upwards” of the fearful castrated maternal genital envisioned in Freud’s “Medusa’s Head” must stand beside a quite different “displacement upwards” of the life-giving maternal genital. Indeed, tradition holds that Medusa’s beheading gives rise to the birth of vigorous twins. Together with allied details, this aligns Ovid’s masterwork with theories that modify or displace the so called “sexual phallic monism” that some believe taints Freud’s theories of gender development. "First Among Men: George Washington and the Myth of American Masculinity" by Maurizio Valsania is a thematic reappraisal of George Washington's character that focuses on his physical ailments, tailors, and London clothiers rather than his military campaigns and presidency. The book explores embodied masculinity and the stylization of the body, highlighting Washington's physical challenges, illnesses, and attention to fashion. While the book offers a refreshing perspective on Washington and his eighteenth-century milieu, it has shortcomings in its treatment of slavery and lacks sustained analysis on the topic. Paul's letters depict gentiles and Jews with different characteristics of sin. This article focuses on Paul's rhetoric about Jewish shortcomings and argues that he has an eschatological myth of Jewish sin: it is the period in the Jewish deity's plan when he has hardened his people into disobedience and disloyalty. While scholars have traditionally tried to connect Paul's ideas about Jewish sin to deficiencies of historical Jews, Paul's claims are primarily animated by his Jewish eschatological scheme and competitive rhetorical needs. The mean flow index—usually referred to as Mx—has been used for assessing dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) for almost 30 years. However, concerns have arisen regarding methodological consistency, construct and criterion validity, and test–retest reliability. Methodological nuances, such as choice of input (cerebral perfusion pressure, invasive or non‐invasive arterial pressure), pre‐processing approach and artefact handling, significantly influence mean flow index values, and previous studies correlating mean flow index with other established dCA metrics are confounded by inherent methodological flaws like heteroscedasticity, while the mean flow index also fails to discriminate individuals with presumed intact versus impaired dCA (discriminatory validity), and its prognostic performance (predictive validity) across various conditions remains inconsistent. The test–retest reliability, both within and between days, is generally poor. At present, no single approach for data collection or pre‐processing has proven superior for obtaining the mean flow index, and caution is advised in the further use of mean flow index‐based measures for assessing dCA, as current evidence does not support their clinical application. This article argues that in Armed with Madness Mary Butts proposes new options for successful living in the disaffected interwar years of the twentieth century, by adopting a counterintuitive modernist position of looking back to ancient myth and spiritual magic practice in order to look forward. In doing so, she questions establishment notions of female agency, personal relationships, and the role and constitution of families through the lens of feminist occult modernism; each of these themes is underpinned by magic and the supernatural as an elemental power within women and the landscape. At the centre of the narrative is a rediscovered jade cup, a purported Holy Grail; in her use of a traditional Matter of Britain theme and an ancient object freighted with magical and mystical power, Butts's occult modernist vision is characterised by a gesture towards transformation, resolution and acceptance of difference, through the influence of the Grail. This article is part of a continuing discourse in the Caribbean about the exercise of sovereignty and the need to hold steadfast to the concept as a bulwark against imperial erasure of cultural identity. The essay argues against such conventional wisdom. It is intended to move beyond popular notions of sovereignty to unmask the reality of conflict, subordination and violence embedded in the idea of sovereignty. The article also looks at the way sovereignty is deployed in the Caribbean as part of popular, political discourses, and provides examples of how the concept is made unsustainable in its practice. It is an approach which allows for a materialist reading of the political development of the role the state plays in shaping the consciousness of the nation into an understanding of the idea of sovereignty. In conclusion, the paper returns to the specifically cultural logic of sovereignty, engaging the notion of "the sovereignty of the imagination," articulated by the eminent Caribbean novelist, George Lamming, as a way of reconceptualizing this political concept. The paper ends with the notion that sovereignty in the Caribbean is a myth and should be abandoned for a more realistic understanding of the actual power of the postcolonial state in the global political economy. The concept of Slightly Out of Focus, attributed to the photographer Robert Capa, is a line of research that invites us to delve into icons, such as the photographs “The Falling Soldier” and “Crawling through the Water”. Regarding the version presented by proponents of Robert Capa’s work and the results of recent investigations, there are some discrepancies regarding the classification of The Mexican Suitcase II and his photographic style. The conflicts concerning cameras lost negatives, and the effect of blurriness in both icons are coincidences that may form a pattern in the discourse about Robert Capa. This research also analyzes two theses on the biases of press photography and documentary photography. The first thesis considers that in press photography, staging is fraudulent information, but not in documentary photography. The second thesis posits that staging is an unacceptable fraud in both photographic biases. The methodology applied in both theses compares two icons of Robert Capa, considered typical of press photography, with two other icons by photographer Arthur Rothstein, namely, “Cattle Skull” and “Dust Storm”. Rothstein is a reference figure in documentary photography and the 1936 Resettlement Administration program, later known as Farm Security Administration. The press’s reaction to the staging of the photograph Cattle Skull left no doubt about the incompatibility of staging in the context of documentary photography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay considers the myths surrounding the historical figure of Hetman Mazepa and their artistic expressions. More specifically, it compares and contrasts two recent stage versions of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Mazepa opera by theaters in Kharkiv in 2017 and Moscow in 2021, at the time of the Russian military operations on the territory of Ukraine. The desire of Ukrainian directors to return honors to the national hero is opposed by the Russian interpretation of the image of Mazepa as an archetype of a traitor. The essay shows how the Ukrainian version updated the plot and liberated the Mazepa myth from Russian and Soviet imperial distortions, thereby connecting the opera’s events with the contemporary struggle for a sovereign state. Objective/context: The decade of the 1920s witnessed a significant transformation in Peruvian political culture with the widespread recognition of the indigenous problem as a socioeconomic phenomenon, which paved the way for new political languages. This article aims to recover the role of myth in the Peruvian indigenista debate during this period. Specifically, it delves into the literary polemic of indigenismo in 1927, focusing on how intellectuals from Lima, Cusco, and Puno bestowed their arguments with legitimacy, effectively intertwining literature and history through the incorporation of mythical elements. Methodology: The study proposes an examination of the arguments put forth by indigenista intellectuals using the tools of conceptual history, drawing heavily from Hans Blumenberg's work on myth. This theoretical framework helps uncover the semantic foundations of Peruvian indigenist's language and sheds light on the historical temporalities of their political projects. Originality: This article advances a novel analysis of the intellectual field by reinterpreting primary sources related to the 1927 indigenismo polemic, reconstructing synchronic languages on national identity, and highlighting the role of myth as a significant rhetorical device. By exploring how supporters of indigenismo creatively employed myth to imagine the past and mobilize politically, this study uncovers previously overlooked conceptual shifts and their mythical underpinnings. Conclusions: The study argues that myth played a crucial role in shaping the political language of a new generation of Peruvian intellectuals. Indigenismo facilitated the emergence of novel conceptual frameworks that interrogated national identity, accelerated expectations of change, and incorporated mythical elements from indigenous experiences, including rebellions in the south and the activities of the Comité Pro-Derecho Indígena Tahuantinsuyo. In today's consumer society, the promotion and marketing of products is no longer just for necessity. With the development of information and communication technologies, images have surrounded people. In line with these images, invisible messages are imposed on people's subconscious in advertising messages. At this point, the semiotic analysis method makes these hidden messages visible. In this study, two different advertisement designs featuring militancy and male representation have been analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic method, determining which myths are reproduced by these advertisements. It examines how selected Tabasco hot sauce and Zwilling knife advertisements use visual media to convey complex messages that influence societal norms and consumer behavior through the purposive sampling method. It identifies cultural narratives and ideologies within these ads that not only market their products but also influence societal values. In conclusion, the analyzed advertisement designs have been found to reproduce myths of a patriarchal society, heroism, as well as nationalism and racism. This article explores the becoming-church of fake news against the background of the rise of the mediatization of faith and religious beliefs through classic media supports, such as newspapers, magazines, and journals, between 1840 and 1863 in the United States. The analysis focuses on the expression of Seventh-day Adventist Church beliefs in the Adventist press before 1863. The observation of this corpus follows the construction of the "narrative" of fake news from the story propagated by William Miller. The aim is to understand how the Seventh-day Adventist Church was created in the media from the fake news of William Miller. The article shows that the mediatization of William Miller's fake news made the Seventh-day Adventist Church appear as the embodiment of an agnostic movement, as the material trace of a cultural expression of romanticism, but also as a spiritual organization, with a social and auxiliary political vocation. The present study focuses on the semiotic profile of a literary character acting as a villain/antagonist (Propp) as one of the central factors of the existential problem situation (the de facto "originator" of problems), which represents a general theme in the folk fairy tales and/or culture-forming stories. The aim of this paper is neither to cover all the principles and manifestations of antagonists exhaustively, nor to present a complete typological description of antagonistic characters, but to cover those basic forms and most frequent or otherwise essential attributes that canonically standardize and significantly universalize the archetype of an antagonist in the selected range of narratives. The issue is approached from the perspective of literary theory (with an emphasis on the morphological, structural, and thematic analysis of the literary characters), and it is materially and argumentatively based on the representative sets of folklore and culture-forming narratives (Aarne-Thompson-Uther's international catalog of fairy tale types, world myths, canonical texts, etc.), as well as on their national (Slovak) variants. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism sector was sometimes completely shut down. However, the strict measures were relaxed in periods characterized by lower infection rates. In this context, “revenge travelling”, an assumption that people would travel excessively to relieve their pandemic fatigue and compensate for missed holiday trips, was discussed amongst the tourism industry and media. This paper aims to unravel whether “revenge travelling” concerning COVID-19 is a reality or myth. It examines six indicators that constitute the phenomenon amongst students at a German university. Four out of the six indicators did not provide any proof of “revenge travelling” behavior. Tertiary students did not travel more frequently in 2021 than in 2020; they did not spend more on vacations, and COVID-19-related considerations did not change their travel planning. Additionally, only a minority of the students who travelled more often linked this to compensating for missed vacations. Nonetheless, the indicators “travel durations” and “travel destinations” revealed some evidence of travel behavior associated with the phenomenon. Ernest Koliqi (1901-1975) was a dramatist, novelist, journalist, poet, translator, and one of the pioneers of contemporary Albanian storytelling. In this genre, he is known for three well-known works in Albanian literature, in which elements such as narration, theme, and discourse are distinguished, which, in addition to the authorial figure of Koliq, also represent the purpose of this study. Ernest Koliq's creativity in prose is an interweaving of tradition and modernity. The object of the study will be his three most representative works in Albanian literature, with the titles "Shadow of the Mountains," "Flag Merchant," and " Mirrors of Narşiz." The prose of Ernest Koliqi points out the social and cultural situation of the Albanians at the beginning of the 20th century, in the 20s-30s, where the themes that dominate these stories are: mountain, blood, canon, friend, the given word, faith, myths, legends, the fantastic, the cult of the ancestors, including also the elaboration of social, psychological, and psychoanalytical character topics as well. The methodology of this paper includes a combination of comparative, semiotic, anthropological, and social methods. The expected results of this study are related to the author's viewpoint and his perception on the concept of tradition and its application in front of the open world, the civilized world, and the Western world. It has to be emphasized the fact that Koliqi grew up in the Northern Highlands, where customs prevailed strongly, but he was educated in the Western world, in Italy. Therefore, his style represents a compound of modern and traditional aesthetics. This intercultural clash has influenced his artistic world and this was also reflected in the following study. The article analyses the Japanese fairy tales "Kaguya-hime, the Maiden of the Moonlight", "The Crane" and "The Snow Maiden", whose main characters are close in their semantics to Japanese goddesses. The characteristic features of the poetics of these fairy tales are the absence of a happy ending, tragedy, and the connection of the heroines with the elements, astral images, and the world of birds and animals. Through the motif of metamorphosis, these three tales reveal the theme of unhappy love. The image of Kaguya-hime can be interpreted in two ways: 1) the visible signs of an adult beauty are only a mask under which a child is hiding, and 2) the protagonist is a stranger who realizes that her life among people is temporary, here she must gain certain experience, go through a series of trials, and then return to her real home (the Moon) as a different person. The second model associates Kaguya-hime with the heroines of fairy tales from different nations because she also needs to go through the ritual of rebirth (life-death-life) and metaphorical initiation into adulthood. But while the heroes of European fairy tales leave their home (the "human world"), enter the forest or the thirty-ninth realm (a foreign space), and go through trials there, for Kaguya-hime, the foreign space is the human world (the Earth), and the Moon is her native space to which she later returns. Therefore, the role of the spatial planes through which the protagonist passes is mirrored in this Japanese fairy tale. Accordingly, Kaguya-hime herself is associated with a goddess who briefly appears in the life of an old couple and makes them happy. She enters the world of people with the help of a bamboo stalk, which acquires the semantics of a "door" between time and space planes, magically connected to the Moon and the other world. Kaguya-hime gives her foster parents her love and material values: the old man begins to find silver coins in the bamboo stalks every day. Silver is associated with the moonlight. Thus, at the very beginning of the tale, the connection between Kaguya-hime and the Moon is outlined. The motif of the magical endowment of the parents of the miracle girl with silver and gold by the Grandfather-knows-everything (the Sun, not the Moon) is found in the Ukrainian fairy tale "How a Herder's Daughter Became a Queen". The amazing heroine of the fairy tale "The Crane" is similar to the enchanted beauty from the Ukrainian fairy tale "The Bird Girl". In both texts, an amazing girl appears as an assistant to the protagonist, helping him to become rich by using the magic of weaving. However, whereas in the Japanese tale, the man loses his wife by breaking his promise (he spies on the woman's work and sees her as a bird), the Ukrainian tale has a happy ending. The difference between the two texts also lies in the prerequisites for establishing a marriage relationship between a female bird and a man. In the tale "The Crane", a young man helps a wounded bird to heal and at the same time, he does not expect to meet her again, as a human. In the Ukrainian fairy tale, the bird seeks rebirth through death: she asks the young man to behead her so that she can become his wife. The characters of the Ukrainian fairy tale "The Cane Girl" are partly similar to the characters of the fairy tales "Kaguya-hime, the Maiden of the Moonlight", and "The Crane". Yuki-Onna, the wonderful woman from the tale "The Snow Maiden", has vivid ethno-psycho- logical specificity, tends to be the goddess of death, and is associated with rituals of transition. The heroine first initiates the young man Minokita into the mystery of life-death-life (killing his old master in front of him) and thus contributes to the hero's age-related initiation, later becomes his faithful wife and reveals her demonic nature after her husband breaks his vow. An important place in the poetics of the analyzed tales is occupied by images-symbols of the moon, bamboo, silver, bird, feathers, night, winter, snow, river, boundary, and Death. What are the implications of a bejeweled dancer in fine silk on the proscenium stage performing a piece that undeniably centers caste? As the Bharatanatyam field reflects on the art form's appropriation from the hereditary dance community, analyzing choreography reveals different bodily representations of caste. Many Bharatanatyam dancers globally perform excerpts of the Nandanar Charitram, by Tamil composer Gopalakrishna Bharathi. The plot traces Nandanar, a Dalit saint who is not allowed in many temples and ends with his immolation, allowing his "purified" self to unite with the Hindu god Shiva. I study performances of the Nandanar Charitram comparing two Bharatanatyam showings and the 1942 film "Nandanar". To recognize how caste is both articulated and understood, I analyze choreography, interviews conducted with dancers, and forums where audience members share their responses to the works. I use Judith Butler and Dwight Conquergood's theorization of performativity, acknowledging that while Bharatanatyam choreography is often "iterative", it has the potential to "disrupt" dominant norms on caste and politics. Nandanar remains the most prominent Dalit figure seen in the Bharatanatyam repertoire. By studying representations of his story, I highlight the relevance of bodily caste politics in the South Asian diaspora today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aims to demonstrate what myths of and about science are reproduced in this popular cultural work (movie – "Oppenheimer"). This is done by examining the unconscious hegemonic positions supported by the reproduction of stereotypical and mythical images of science. Design/methodology/approach: Content/Text Analysis: The conceptual analysis of a cultural text – a film ("Oppenheimer") – through a theoretical apparatus (B. Latour's theory). Findings: The film demonstrates its reproduction of three distinct elements. Firstly, it exhibits classic scientistic clichés pertaining to technoscience. Secondly, it highlights the replication of the individualized monomyth about the (super) hero, leading to the exclusion of the intricate conditions of technoscience's existence. Lastly, the film aligns with the Californian ideology, as proposed by Barbrook. Originality/value: The value of the text is twofold: (1) To show that the classical approaches of Bruno Latour are still relevant. (2) To show what hidden premises and myths about technoscience are being propagated through a work of pop culture (the film "Oppenheimer") and, in effect, to show what kind of influence of cultural hegemony is at work here. This paper focuses on Horia Lovinescu (1917-1983), a member of one of the most important dynasties of modern Romanian culture. Six of Horia Lovinescu's dramas are interpreted in a close reading system, by psychoanalytical tools and by focusing on the family constellations the author imagines. These plays are related to the historical context ("the terror of history"), in order to understand how works of art are the reverberation of biographicalcreative data of the greatest importance and how they echo in a paradoxical way social-political transformations. This double reading, psychological and historical, is justified by the playwright himself, through the construction of his plays and through his many allusions to psychoanalysis in his writings. This Research paper examines how Tolkien's novels, "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings," incorporate labyrinthine elements into their fictional worlds. In these literary works, events primarily unfold in open landscapes, but there are elements that evoke complex and dangerous mazes, where certain heroes assume roles similar to that of Theseus. Thus, this analysis explores the representations of the Labyrinth myth through Tolkien's writing, highlighting both the similarities and differences between these structures in the two contexts, while emphasizing the symbolism of the subterranean world, akin to a cave, as a site of transformation where heroes emerge metamorphosed, invoking both death and rebirth. The paper suggests the use of mythocriticism to analyze the reiterations and variations of Labyrinth mythemes in these novels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The labyrinth motif appears regularly in Christian Grenier's novels. In diegesis, it is always linked to myth and the fates of Daedalus, Theseus and Ariadne. It is also a diegetic motif that structures the setting, organizes the characters' quest and generates suspense. But this motif is above all a metadiscursive metaphor that theorizes the author's writing. In particular, he evokes the meandering construction of police intrigues. Introduction: Breast cancer was the world’s most prevalent cancer by the end of 2020. This study aims to find out the knowledge and myths regarding breast cancer among women in Ernakulam district. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Ernakulam district in the year 2022.Adult females aged more than 20 years were the study participants. Awareness about breast cancer, associated risk factors, and screening methods was assessed using a questionnaire in the local language. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20. Results: The mean age of the study participants was 49.1 ± 12.2 years. 38 participants [27.14% (95% CI– 19.8, 35.3)] had adequate knowledge levels of symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment options for breast cancer. 132 (94.3 %) women believed in at least one of the mentioned myths. Most common were theuse of deodorants or perfumes (71.4%) and tight bras (64.3%), increased the risk of breast cancer. Participants who had a family history of breast cancer (p=0.03) and those from urban areas (p = 0.024) had significantly fewer myths regarding breast cancer. Conclusion: The knowledge among women regarding breast cancer was inadequate. It’s high time that health professionals take active steps to improve knowledge regarding breast cancer through campaigns and awareness classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The adaptation of elements of Greek and Roman myth and folklore is a recurrent aspect of late-twentieth- and early-twenty-first-century fiction on page and screen. These elements are usually presented alongside other mythologies and serve to add depth and veracity to the world-building. This is no different in Teen Wolf , an MTV show that focused on Scott McCall's journey through lycanthropy. However, in most modern fiction the classical element is one of many sources used in in-story world-building. This paper will present the many examples of the use of classical elements in Teen Wolf , including: the way the werewolves are presented as Lycaon's descendants and with elements common to Roman versipelles , the way the classical past (historic, folkloric, mythic) is included as part of the intradiegetic lore, and how the show itself is built following ancient epic patterns with classical paradigms as points of reference. Context: Working with women to best meet their needs has always been central to midwifery in Quebec, Canada. The creation of birthing centres at the end of the 1990s consolidated this desire to prioritize women's involvement in perinatal care and was intended to encourage the establishment of a care and services partnership between care providers and users. The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the perceptions of clients, midwives and birth assistants of the way in which women are involved in partnership working in Quebec birthing centres. Methods: A single qualitative case and pilot study was conducted with midwives (n = 5), birth assistants (n = 4), a manager (n = 1), clients (n = 5) and members of the users' committee (n = 2) at a birthing centre in Quebec, Canada in July and August 2023. The partnership was evaluated using the dimensions of a validated CADICEE questionnaire. Results: The women and professionals stressed that the relationship was established in a climate of trust. The caregivers also attached importance to autonomy, information sharing and decision-making, adaptation to context, empathy and recognition of the couple's expertise. The women confirmed that they establish a relationship of trust with the professionals when the latter show empathy and that they adapt the follow-up to their knowledge and life context. Key factors in establishing this kind of care relationship are the time given, a de-medicalized environment, the comprehensive care received, and professionals who are well-informed about the partnership. In addition, the birthing centre has a users' committee that can put forward ideas but has no decision-making powers. Conclusions: Both the women and the professionals at the birthing centre appear to be working in partnership. However, at the organizational level, the women are not involved in decision-making. A study of all birthing centres in Quebec would provide a more comprehensive picture of the situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevalence of health myths is increasing with the rise of Internet use. Left unaddressed, online falsehoods can lead to harmful behaviours. In times of crisis, such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the circulation of many myths is exacerbated, often to varying degrees among different cultures. Singapore is a multicultural hub in Asia with Western and Asian influences. Although several studies have examined health myths from a Western or Eastern perspective, little research has investigated online health falsehoods in a population that is culturally exposed to both. Furthermore, most studies examined myths cross-sectionally instead of capturing trends in myth prevalence over time, particularly during crisis situations. Given these literature gaps, we investigated popular myths surrounding the recent COVID-19 pandemic within the multicultural setting of Singapore, by examining its general population. We further examined changes in myth beliefs over the two-year period during the pandemic, and population demographic differences in myth beliefs. Using randomised sampling, two online surveys of nationally representative samples of adults (aged 21–70 years) residing in Singapore were conducted, the first between October 2020 and February 2021 (N = 949), and the second between March and April 2022 (N = 1084). Results showed that 12.7% to 57.5% of the population were unable to identify various myths, such as COVID-19 was manmade, and that three of these myths persisted significantly over time (increases ranging from 3.9% to 9.8%). However, belief in myths varied across population demographics, with ethnic minorities (Indians and Malays), females, young adults and those with lower education levels being more susceptible to myths than their counterparts (p < 0.05). Our findings suggest that current debunking efforts are insufficient to effectively counter misinformation beliefs during health crises. Instead, a post-COVID-19 landscape will require targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable population sub-groups, that also focus on the erroneous beliefs with long staying power. The mean absolute relative difference (MARD) is a numerical metric that has been adopted by the diabetes technology community as the main indicator that describes the accuracy of a glucose sensor at a single point in time. The appropriateness of this adoption is questionable because there is limited evidence that MARD has meaningful clinical relevance in the current era of sensor technology. The calculation may be simple, but evaluation of MARD can be very complex because it is substantially impacted by the design of the data collection in an accuracy study. Factors that can influence the overall MARD include participant demographics such as type of diabetes and age, site of sensor wear, and the percentage of collected values in each glycemic range during the study that is, in turn, a function of the study design. MARD is only one of several important statistical metrics such as bias and precision that are relevant to assessing accuracy of a sensor. Furthermore, these analytic metrics convey little information about the safety and effectiveness of sensor use with an automated insulin delivery system or a standalone device. There are no clinical studies in people with diabetes (PWD) proving that MARD can accurately differentiate between a safe and unsafe sensor or between a more and less clinically effective sensor. Moreover, there are alternatives to MARD that can do this in a clinically meaningful way, which include error grid analyses and clinical studies in PWD. Seventeenth-century Spanish poems on Apollo and Daphne foreground rape so as to mock the god and by metonymy what he represents within each poem for not being "man" enough to violate the nymph. Modeled after Garcilaso de la Vega's sonnet 13 the poems operated two key changes in the myth with respect to the Ovidian source: to omit either or both Cupid and Peneus; and turn what started out as a tragedy into a comedy. Archaeology in 2022 features more calls than ever for a socially and politically engaged, progressive discipline. Archaeologists increasingly respect and integrate decolonizing and Indigenous knowledge in theory and practice. They acknowledge and embrace the fluidity and diversity of sexes and genders, past and present. They document patterns of migration, ancient as well as contemporary, to combat retrograde and racist narratives that remain pervasive in the public sphere. At the same time, the field has a deep‐seated conservative bastion toward which many scholars retreat, arguing for an "objective" past that is free of political implications or interpretive ambiguity. As anarchist archaeologists, we see the myth of the objective past as one of many interconnected myths that have provided the basis for an archaeology that reifies and proliferates the current social order. We deconstruct myths relating to capitalist and colonialist ideologies of "human nature," the assumed inevitability of the current order, and fatalistic commitment to dystopian or utopian futures. As alternatives, we present counter‐myths that emphasize the contingent and political nature of archaeological praxis, the creative and collaborative foundation of communities, the alternative orders that archaeology uncovers, and the role of a hopeful past for constructing the possibilities of different futures. Alternative news media (ANM) have become an important information source for certain audiences. Research shows that ANM usage is linked to a preference for populist parties and the use of digital media. However, ANM existed before the rise of populism and digital media over the last two decades. Thus, we must assume that additional factors are related to ANM usage. To investigate such factors, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey (N  = 1,212) of the Swiss population. We analyze how affinity toward conspiracy myths, preference for populist parties, the usage of social media, and the Telegram messenger app are related to ANM usage. The results indicate that people with a high affinity toward conspiracy myths are more likely to use ANM. Different than in previous studies, preference for populist politics is not related to higher ANM usage in Switzerland. Our results suggest that the political context matters when studying ANM usage and that the strong focus on right-wing populism might lead to scholars missing part of the bigger picture. Furthermore, our findings indicate that the use of social media and Telegram, which recently gained relevance as a channel for mobilizing protests during the COVID-19 pandemic, positively connect with ANM consumption. The United Kingdom's strategy for negotiating Brexit involved a misapprehension: that the EU-27 would divide and concede to UK demands. In this article, we provide one explanation for this misapprehension: a pervasive 'Merkel myth' widely accepted within the British political class. That myth skewed British understanding of the European Union's power balance and priorities. It privileged an interpretation of Merkel as a decisive influence in Europe, well-disposed to the UK. Alongside this was the belief that Merkel would come under pressure from Germany's manufacturing giants to grant the UK a relatively generous deal. The Merkel myth reinforced a political strategy that, by all accounts, never came close to success. Yet these beliefs affected the approach of three prime ministers. Employing the distinctive analytical lens of 'political myth' to explain the judgements of actors, the article contributes to a growing literature on the role of ideas in political strategies. A society is significantly shaped by the myths it perpetuates. These myths serve as lenses for how its people see and make sense of the world around them. Myths, particularly origin myths like Enuma Elish, offer a perspective on the world that legitimates the way a society structures itself and responds to crisis, as opposing forces threaten to undermine its conception of order. This essay proposes to read Psalm 46 against the backdrop of Israel's own origin myths which undergird and shape their own conceptions of order and in Psalm 46 are called to mind to bolster hope in the midst of crisis. This is argued on the basis of numerous literary parallels with the so-called 'Song of the Sea' in Exodus and the creation accounts in Genesis. In addition, parallels with First Isaiah suggest the likelihood of Sennacherib's siege of Jerusalem as the crisis to which the psalmist responds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rae Langton and Caroline West argue that pornography silences women by presupposing misogynistic attitudes, such as that women enjoy being raped. More precisely, they claim that a somewhat infamous pictorial, 'Dirty Pool', makes such presuppositions, and that it is typical in this respect. I argue for four claims. (1) There are empirical reasons to doubt that women are silenced in the way that Langton and West claim they are. (2) There is no evidence that very much pornography makes the sorts of presuppositions that Langton and West's explanation of silencing requires it to make. (3) Even 'Dirty Pool', for all its other problems, does not make such presuppositions. (4) Langton and West misread 'Dirty Pool' because they do not take proper account of the fact that pornography often traffics in sexual fantasy. The broader lesson is that we need to read pornography more sensitively if we are to understand its capacity to shape socio‐sexual norms (for good or for ill). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myth is the poetic expression of great landscapes of nature and mysterious directors of natural and supernatural phenomena, which justifies the origin of human emotions with poetic vision and has rhetorical value with imaginative action. For this reason, myth, with its intertextual nature, has always been reproduced in literary works and has played a prominent role in the semantic, rhetorical, and aesthetic development of literary works. From the distant past until now, Persian language poets have paid attention to all kinds of myths, including Greco-Roman mythology, and have benefited from the diverse functions of these myths in the application of various concepts. Afghanistan's contemporary poets have reflected different concepts and benefited from the capacity of these myths, considering the reproduction of Greco-Roman mythology. Therefore, the current research, using a descriptive-analytical method, based on the intertextuality theory of Gérard Genette, examines the rhetorical effect of Greco-Roman mythology reflection in Afghanistan's contemporary poetry. The results of this research show that Afghanistan's poets have often reflected Greco-Roman mythology in the form of implied intertextuality. These poets have re-created myths to reflect social, romantic, mystical, didactical, resistance, and ideological concepts, as model, idealistic, and charismatic characters, in declarative and imperative sentences. Child sexual abuse within institutional settings has been a major concern for governments around the world for many years. Consequently, prevention policies have been developed, and institutional child abuse laws have been strengthened in many jurisdictions. Legislation is important to prevent reoffending, however, the majority of childhood sexual abuse remains unreported and undetected. While awareness of the failings of institutions to properly identify and respond to child abuse has grown in recent years, barriers to reporting institutional abuse remain understudied, impacting the ability to prevent abuse. One possible reason that prevents workers from identifying and reporting child sexual abuse is that their judgements are vulnerable to stereotypes and unconscious biases about who perpetrates and is victimised by sexual crimes and what constitutes warning signs of sexually abusive behaviours. Research in psychology provides key insights into human reasoning processes that can lead to bias, so workers fail to identify, respond and prevent grooming and child abuse in an organisational context. This paper reviews what is known about the development and maintenance of stereotypes and unconscious bias, their role in institutional sexual abuse, and concludes with a discussion of measures that can be taken to mitigate unconscious bias to prevent child abuse. This article examines the 'The Pictures Girl' star search competition, run by the film fan magazine Pictures and Picturegoer from late 1918 to early 1919. It charts the stages of the competition, demonstrates the gap between the promised prize and the actual outcome for the winner, one Alice 'Lavender' Lee, and shows what motives underpinned talent competitions and continue to underpin them now.
