Abstract

We propose a multivariate generalization of the multiplicative volatility model of Engle and Rangel (2008), which has a nonparametric long run component and a unit multivariate GARCH short run dynamic component. We suggest various kernel-based estimation procedures for the parametric and nonparametric components, and derive the asymptotic properties thereof. For the parametric part of the model, we obtain the semiparametric efficiency bound. Our method is applied to a bivariate stock index series. We find that the univariate model of Engle and Rangel (2008) appears to be violated in the data whereas our multivariate model is more consistent with the data.

Abstract

We present a general principle for estimating a regression function nonparametrically allowing for a wide variety of data Öltering, e.g., repeated left truncation and right censoring. Both the mean and the median regression case are considered. The method works by Örst estimating the conditional hazard function or conditional survivor function and then integrating. We also investigate improved methods that take account of model structure such as independent errors, and show that such methods can improve performance when the model structure is true. We establish the pointwise asymptotic normality of our estimators.

Abstract

Within sociology and economy, the 'Information society' has become an important category characterising current trends in modern society. Although a huge amount of quantitative data has been gathered in order to assess the ongoing changes, one of the key features of information society, 'information work' (by which "information workers" are defmed) still needs clarification. Especially the question of how the quality of information work can be determined is still considered to be open. On the background of this discussion, it is argued that a clarification of the notion of 'information work' can be gained by looking 'Workplace Studies'. Focusing on the 'centres of co-ordination', they study work activities in what may be said the paradigmatic form of organisation in the 'information society'. However, instead of work being guided and determined by information technologies, it turns out to be rather situational, being characterised by contextual contingencies and the logic of interaction. For this reason, the concept of 'communicative work' is suggested which accounts for the situatedness of work processes, their contextual rationality and essential social interactivity.

Abstract

This paper proposes consistent estimators for transformation parameters in semiparametric models. The problem is to find the optimal transformation into the space of models with a predetermined regression structure like additive or multiplicative separability. We give results for the estimation of the transformation when the rest of the model is estimated non-or semi-parametrically and fulfills some consistency conditions. We propose two methods for the estimation of the transformation parameter: maximizing a profile likelihood function or minimizing the mean squared distance from independence. First the problem of identification of such models is discussed. We then state asymptotic results for a general class of nonparametric estimators. Finally, we give some particular examples of nonparametric estimators of transformed separable models. The theoretical results as well as the small sample performance are studied by several simulation exercises.

Abstract

Throughout the 1990s, Western states intervened militarily in intrastate conflicts, ostensibly to protect endangered noncombatants. In spite of their military superiority and vast resources, the Western interveners were largely unsuccessful at providing protection to the populations. This thesis seeks to explain why Western states intervened in humanitarian crises throughout the 1990s in a way that failed to protect populations. Using the protection interventions in northern Iraq, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Kosovo as case studies, this thesis demonstrates that the interveners prioritized the protection of their self-interests over the protection of the endangered populations. As a result, and in spite of their humanitarian rhetoric, Western interveners protected populations only when doing so coincided with the pursuit of their self-interests. Furthermore, this thesis argues that by utilizing concepts from risk theory, it is possible to reconcile the willingness of Western states to intervene in humanitarian crises with their refusal to provide adequate protection to vulnerable civilian populations. Rather than viewing these inadequate protection interventions as anomalous occurrences that defy an overarching explanatory framework, it argues that they were the logical results of the West's post-Cold War risk perspective. By applying key concepts derived largely from Ulrich Beck's sociological conception of a Risk Society to the population protection interventions of the 199Os, this thesis develops an explanatory framework for understanding the complex and seemingly counterproductive strategies employed by Western states. The author concludes that Western states were acting as risk societies and approached the interventions of the 1990s as exercises in risk management in which the costs required to protect populations were deemed to be disproportionately high when compared to the risks posed to Western self-interests. Abstract

Our purpose is to survey the main ideas of modern economic theory that can contribute to a better understanding of the segregation and unemployment problems arising within cities. We start by discussing the main contributions of urban economics and of labor economics that can used for our purpose. This is followed by a short discussion of the way economists deal with the phenomenon of discrimination. We then sketch what could become an economic theory of ghettos, which is based on the interactions between the labor markets and the market for housing as well as on various social externalities. We conclude by discussing some policy recommendations.

We provide easy to verify sufficient conditions for the consistency and asymptotic normality of a class of semiparametric optimization estimators where the criterion function does not obey standard smoothness conditions and simultaneously depends on some preliminary nonparametric estimators. Our results extend existing theories like those of Pakes and Pollard (1989), Andrews (1994a), and Newey (1994). We apply our results to an example.

Abstract

Since 1974 Europe has been burdened with steadily persistent and increasing unemployment. This book, prepared under the auspices of the European Unemployment Program, uses a compact econometric model to identify the sources of the unemployment problem and to suggest remedies. Focusing on ten European countries, with a chapter on the United States for comparative perspective, the studies are unique in adopting a single theoretical model to guide empirical research. The common framework allows for sharply focused investigation and produces findings whose significance does not end at national boundaries. The indepth country studies are preceded by an overview that includes a detailed description of the theoretical model, a summary of findings, and policy recommendations and a chapter by Olivier Blanchard that discusses different approaches to the analysis of the unemployment problem and relates this work to earlier efforts.

Abstract

This report describes the result of the second year's work on a 3- year project designed to identify and develop methods of effective support for higher-level decision making where the use of decision makers' own language in identifying and structuring problems is important. It examines the four classes of systems and tools for decision support that need to be provided within the general procedural schema for handling ill-structured decision problems to provide a comprehensive library of microcomputer-based tools for handling such problems at strategic and lower levels. Analysis of results confirms the basic hypothesis--problem handling is management strata specific. Higher strata managers employed better structuring processes in their problem handling; they proposed less strategic issues and more tactical issues both at the beginning and at the end of the decision conference. We also focused on identifying differences in perspectives of stakeholders in a risky technology, that of hazardous waste incineration in a real-life setting. We studied groups of stakeholders in industry and government (regulatory agency) as well as lay people and a pressure group.

It surveys and describes the potential applications of 58 tools for structuring and analysing decision problems. It examines the mode of operation and support capabilities of the more promising tools in detail and concludes with an overall evaluation and guidelines for future tool development. All this is done within the context of a general procedural schema (described in chapter 2) for handling strategic decision problems effectively, from start to finish, in situations that start out unstructured: that is, in newly occurring, nonrepeated situations in which the structure of the problem is, of necessity, initially unclear (e.g., making plans for developing new areas of activity, developing new intervention strategies, selecting between competing research projects, etc.) (kr)

Why do the police need plastic bullets? The police themselves give two reasons. First, plastic bullets keep stone-throwers out of range. Secondly, firing plastic bullets will disperse a crowd. Plastic bullets work by causing pain, or the fear of pain, resulting from the impact of a projectile roughly the same weight as a cricket ball, but travelling twice as fast as a ball thrown by a good fast bowler. According to the Home Office's guidelines, police should fire them only if the Chief Constable judges such an action necessary as a last resort, because of the risk to life or serious injury, or the widespread destruction of property.

En años recientes, ha habido un creciente interés en la interdependencia e indivisibilidad de las agendas de derechos humanos, desarrollo humano y seguridad humana. Las Naciones Unidas, particularmente la Secretaría General y el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo, se han adherido a esta aproximación, debido a su potencial para abordar problemas estructurales, asegurar coherencia en todas las actividades de la Organización, así como la realización de los principios de la Carta de Naciones Unidas. Este artículo, basado en la revisión de la literatura relevante, revisa la aplicación de esta aproximación al bienestar de la población desplazada en Colombia, para concluir que, a pesar de que esta comprensión holística de la protección del ser humano tiene un impacto en la posibilidad de mejorar la capacidad de cada uno de los discursos que la componen para abordar el bienestar humano, existen riesgos que deben ser resaltados para garantizar que el carácter emancipatorio de los derechos humanos no sea cooptado o instrumentalizado.

Abstract

At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multinational data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar results were found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, and collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-neglible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. Abstract

International audience; This article examines vertical dimension as a metaphorical representation of ethical consumption by testing the connection between ethical consumption and high verticality, and its implications for consumers when considering fair-trade products. This research first shows that the representation of ethical consumption in terms of high verticality manifests in a strong implicit association between moral virtues underpinning fair-trade consumption (e.g., justice, solidarity) and "up" (Study 1). This research then demonstrates that consumers explicitly associate fair-trade products with an elevated position (Study 2), and that a match between fair-trade products and increased physical elevation results in heightened altruistic behavior (Study 3). In addition, this article reveals that greater familiarity with fair-trade products enhances this metaphorical representation and its downstream effects on altruistic behavior (Studies 2 and 3). The theoretical and managerial implications of the present research are discussed in conclusion.

Abstract

We consider the initial and progressive enlargements of a filtration generated by a marked point process (called the reference filtration) with a strictly positive random time. We assume Jacod's equivalence hypothesis, that is, the existence of a strictly positive conditional density for the random time with respect to the reference filtration. Then, starting with the predictable integral representation of a martingale in the initially enlarged reference filtration, we derive explicit expressions for the coefficients which appear in the predictable integral representations for the optional projections of the martingale on the progressively enlarged filtration and on the reference filtration. We also provide similar results for the optional projection of a martingale in the progressively enlarged filtration on the reference filtration.

Abstract

We continue to study the credit risk model of a financial market introduced in [19] in which the dynamics of intensity rates of two default times are described by linear combinations of three independent geometric Brownian motions. The dynamics of two default-free risky asset prices are modeled by two geometric Brownian motions which are dependent of the ones describing the default intensity rates. We obtain closed form expressions for the no-arbitrage prices of some first-and second-to-default European style contingent claims given the reference filtration initially and progressively enlarged by the two successive default times. The accessible default-free reference filtration is generated by the standard Brownian motions driving the model.

Abstract

To examine whether four pre-selected front-of-pack nutrition labels improve food purchases in real-life grocery shopping settings, we put 1.9 million labels on 1,266 food products in four categories in 60 supermarkets and analyzed the nutritional quality of 1,668,301 purchases using the FSA nutrient profiling score. Effect sizes were 17 times smaller on average than those found in comparable laboratory studies. The most effective nutrition label, Nutri-Score, increased the purchases of foods in the top third of their category nutrition-wise by 14%, but had no impact on the purchases of foods with medium, low, or unlabeled nutrition quality. Therefore, Nutri-Score only improved the nutritional quality of the basket of labeled foods purchased by 2.5% (-0.142 FSA points). Nutri-Score’s performance improved with the variance (but not the mean) of the nutritional quality of the category. In-store surveys suggest that Nutri-Score’s ability to attract attention and help shoppers rank products by nutritional quality may explain its performance. Abstract

This paper presents a detailed analysis of how liquid money market instruments -- sterling bills of exchange -- were produced during the first globalisation. We rely on a unique data set that reports systematic information on all 23,493 bills re-discounted by the Bank of England in the year 1906. Using descriptive statistics and network analysis, we reconstruct the complete network of linkages between agents involved in the origination and distribution of these bills. Our analysis reveals the truly global dimension of the London bill market before the First World War and underscores the crucial role played by London intermediaries (acceptors and discounters) in overcoming information asymmetries between borrowers and lenders on this market. Abstract

International audience; The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh ('the Accord') has received both praise and criticism concerning its implications for corporate responsibility and power. This article contributes to the debate by situating the Accord within a broader set of activities that buyers are engaged in to promote better labour conditions in their supply chains. The authors identify three approaches of buyer engagement: auditing, capacity building and advocacy. Drawing on interviews conducted with European brands and retailers, the article shows how buyers perceive the merits and challenges of these approaches, and whether and how they discharge responsibility and power through these activities. The study shows that the Accord is seen primarily as part of the auditing approach with a key feature being its use of collective leverage as a means of enforcement. While greater buyer power has not necessarily been accompanied by greater responsibility, the article highlights heterogeneity among buyers in how they take up different approaches, painting a more nuanced picture of buyer responsibility and power.

Abstract

Using qualitative data from interviews with multiple respondents in 45 garment brands and retailers, as well as respondents from unions and other stakeholders, the authors analyze the emergence of the Action Collaboration Transformation (ACT) living wages initiative. They ask how the inter-firm coordination and firm–union cooperation demanded by a multi-firm transnational industrial relations agreement (TIRA) developed. Synthesizing insights from the industrial relations and private governance literatures along with recent collective action theory, they identify a new pathway for the emergence of multi-firm TIRAs based on common group understandings, positive experiences of interaction, and trust. The central finding is that existing union-inclusive governance initiatives provided a platform from which spillover effects developed, facilitating the formation of new TIRAs. The authors contribute a new mapping of labor governance approaches on the dimensions of inter-firm coordination and labor inclusiveness, foregrounding socialization dynamics as a basis for collective action and problematizing the limited scalability of this mode of institutional emergence.

Abstract

In previous work the authors defined the k-th order simplicial distance between probability distributions which arises naturally from a measure of dispersion based on the squared volume of random simplices of dimension k. This theory is embedded in the wider theory of divergences and distances between distributions which includes Kullback–Leibler, Jensen–Shannon, Jeffreys–Bregman divergence and Bhattacharyya distance. A general construction is given based on defining a directional derivative of a function $$\phi $$ from one distribution to the other whose concavity or strict concavity influences the properties of the resulting divergence. For the normal distribution these divergences can be expressed as matrix formula for the (multivariate) means and covariances. Optimal experimental design criteria contribute a range of functionals applied to non-negative, or positive definite, information matrices. Not all can distinguish normal distributions but sufficient conditions are given. The k-th order simplicial distance is revisited from this aspect and the results are used to test empirically the identity of means and covariances.

Abstract

Gaussian processes (GP) are widely used as a metamodel for emulating time-consuming computer codes. We focus on problems involving categorical inputs, with a potentially large number L of levels (typically several tens), partitioned in G << L groups of various sizes. Parsimonious covariance functions, or kernels, can then be defined by block covariance matrices T with constant covariances between pairs of blocks and within blocks. However, little is said about the positive definiteness of such matrices, which may limit their practical usage. In this paper, we exploit the hierarchy group/level and provide a parameterization of valid block matrices T, based on a nested Bayesian linear model. The same model can be used when the assumption within blocks is relaxed, giving a flexible parametric family of valid covariance matrices with constant covariances between pairs of blocks. As a by-product, we show that the positive definiteness of T is equivalent to the positive definiteness of a small matrix of size G, obtained by averaging each block. We illustrate with an application in nuclear engineering, where one of the categorical inputs is the atomic number in Mendeleev's periodic table and has more than 90 levels.

Abstract

A hypothesis for the evolution of long post-reproductive lifespans in the human lineage involves asymmetries in relatedness between young immigrant females and the older females in their new groups. In these circumstances, inter-generational reproductive conflicts between younger and older females are predicted to resolve in favour of the younger females, who realize fewer inclusive fitness benefits from ceding reproduction to others. This conceptual model anticipates that immigrants to a community initially have few kin ties to others in the group, gradually showing greater relatedness to group members as they have descendants who remain with them in the group. We examine this prediction in a cross-cultural sample of communities, which vary in their sex-biased dispersal patterns and other aspects of social organization. Drawing on genealogical and demographic data, the analysis provides general but not comprehensive support for the prediction that average relatedness of immigrants to other group members increases as they age. In rare cases, natal members of the community also exhibit age-related increases in relatedness. We also find large variation in the proportion of female group members who are immigrants, beyond simple traditional considerations of patrilocality or matrilocality, which raises questions about the circumstances under which this hypothesis of female competition are met. We consider possible explanations for these heterogenous results, and we address methodological considerations that merit increased attention for research on kinship and reproductive conflict in human societies.This article is part of the theme issue ‘The evolution of female-biased kinship in humans and other mammals’.

Abstract

International audience; This chapter presents a history of international trade finance - the oldest domain of international finance - from its emergence in the Middle Ages up to today. We describe how the structure and governance of the global trade finance market changed over time and how trade credit instruments evolved. Trade finance products initially consisted of idiosyncratic assets issued by local merchants and bankers. The financing of international trade then became increasingly centralized and credit instruments were standardized through the diffusion of the local standards of consecutive leading trading centres (Antwerp, Amsterdam, London). This process of market centralization/product standardization culminated in the nineteenth century when London became the global centre for international trade finance and the sterling bill of exchange emerged as the most widely used trade finance instrument. The structure of the trade finance market then evolved considerably following the First World War and disintegrated during the interwar de-globalization and Bretton Woods period. The reconstruction of global trade finance in the post-1970 period gave way to the decentralized market structure that prevails nowadays.

Abstract

International audience; We consider the link between birthplace and wages. Using a unique panel dataset, we estimate a raw elasticity of wages with respect to birthplace size of 4.2%, two thirds of the 6.8% raw elasticity with respect to city size. Part of this effect simply reflects intergenerational transmission and the spatial sorting of parents, part is explained by the role that birthplace size plays in determining current city size. Lifetime immobility explains a lot of the correlation between birthplace and current city size: we show that 43.7% of individuals only ever work while living in the place they were born. Our results highlight the importance of intergenerational and individual sorting in helping explain the persistence of spatial disparities.
