253. Carbon consumption of activated coke in the thermal regeneration process for flue gas desulfurization and denitrification

Abstract

In the process of flue gas purification with activated coke, sulfuric acid and sulfate are deposited on the activated coke surface; therefore, thermal regeneration is needed to recover the activated coke activity, which leads to carbon consumption. In this work, various regeneration parameters, including temperature, time and atmosphere, were investigated to optimize carbon consumption. The experimental results showed that the desulfurization capacity of the activated coke was clearly improved after thermal regeneration, while the denitrification capacity demonstrated no obvious or regular changes. Based on dozens of groups of regeneration experiments, it was found that the chemical carbon consumption per mol SO2 recovery ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 mol, which was higher than the theoretical value of 0.5 mol. The proportion of CO2 in chemical carbon consumption ranged from 60%–80% with an average value of 70%, and the rest was CO. According to the results from temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), CO and CO2 consumption was mainly derived from the decomposition of carboxyl and anhydride groups, with a small contribution from the reduction reaction of sulfuric acid with carbon. CO and CO2 consumption occupied only 10%–18% of the total carbon-containing functional groups, so the reaction activity was retained after thermal regeneration. The carbon consumption in an NH3/N2 atmosphere was smaller than that in a N2 atmosphere, which was about half of that in a H2O/N2 atmosphere due to the inhibition of carboxyl group decomposition, based on the results from TPD and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (In situ DRIFT). Analysis of the thermal regeneration process in four iron and steel factories revealed that the chemical carbon consumption of activated coke accounted for approximately 20%–40% of the total carbon consumption, which was smaller than the contribution from physical carbon abrasion.

Abstract

Activated carbon (AC) has the advantage of multi-pollutant control with a high removal efficiency for flue gas purification. It is necessary to determine the oxidation mechanism and oxidation products of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on AC to simultaneously capture H2S and SO2. A fixed-bed reactor was coupled with a mass spectrometer (MS) to detect the gaseous components and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to distinguish the sulfur-containing species in the oxidation products on AC and thermally treated AC to investigate the actions of the oxygen-containing functional groups. The results revealed that H2S was adsorbed on the AC surface and combined with oxygen-containing functional groups to form sulfate (SO42−) in the absence of O2. In the presence of O2, H2S and O2 in the atmosphere were adsorbed on the AC active sites, and the catalytic reaction produced elemental sulfur. Elemental sulfur further reacted with O2 to produce gaseous SO2. According to the detection results of XPS and the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (in situ DRIFT) spectra, an oxidation mechanism of H2S by O2 and oxygen-containing functional groups was described. The C=C and C=O bonds were broken by H2S, and then, C-S and S-O bonds of the intermediate products were generated. The C-S bond tended to form elemental sulfur, while the S-O bond likely formed a sulfate or gaseous SO2. Porosity analysis showed that the AC specific surface area decreased after H2S adsorption and that sulfate reduced the specific surface area much more than elemental sulfur.

Abstract

The oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to sulfur trioxide (SO3) is an undesirable reaction that occurs during the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with ammonia (NH3), which is a process applied to purify flue gas from coal-fired power plants. The objectives of this work were to establish the fundamental kinetics of SO3 formation over a V2O5/TiO2 catalyst and to illustrate the formation mechanism of SO3 in the presence of NOx, H2O and NH3. A fixed-bed reactor was combined with a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and a Pentol SO3 analyser to test the outlet concentrations of the multiple components. The results showed that the rate of SO2 oxidation was zero-order in O2, 0.77-order in SO2 and -0.19-order in SO3 and that the apparent activation energy for SO2 oxidation was 74.3 kJ mol−1 over the range of studied conditions. Based on in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (in situ DRIFT) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) tests, the SO3 formation process is described here in detail. The adsorbed SO2 was oxidized by V2O5 to produce adsorbed SO3 in the form of bridge tridentate sulfate, and the adsorbed SO3 was desorbed to the gas phase. NOx promoted the oxidation of the adsorbed SO2 due to the promotion of the conversion of low-valent vanadium to high-valent vanadium. In addition, the desorption of the adsorbed SO3 was inhibited by H2O or NH3 due to the conversion of tridentate sulfate to the more stable bidentate sulfate or ammonium bisulfate. Finally, the mechanism of the influence of NOx, H2O and NH3 on the formation of gaseous SO3 was proposed.

Abstract

Carbon consumption of activated carbon varies with the sulfur-containing products. In this work, differential thermogravimetric (DTG), electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) were used to reveal the adsorption-regeneration process of H 2 S and the effect of adsorption products on carbon consumption. H 2 S reacts with the C=C bond to form C-S bond as an intermediate state, followed by the formation of elemental sulfur. It directly sublimates at approximately 380 °C , about 30 °C higher than the decomposition temperature of H 2 SO 4 . In the thermal regeneration process, the elemental sulfur in the form of monoclinic sulfur (S 8 ) first breaks into infinitely long chain molecules (S ∞ ) and then into small molecules, finally into sulfur vapor. The desorption of elemental sulfur consumes less oxygen and carbon functional groups, reducing the chemical carbon consumption by 59.8% than H 2 SO 4 . The compressive strength reduces less due to its slight effect on the disordered graphitic structure. H 2 S also reacts with the C=O bond to form H 2 SO 3 or H 2 SO 4 . The desorption of H 2 SO 3 does not require carbon consumption. The decomposition of H 2 SO 4 needs to react with C=C bond to release SO 2 , CO 2 , and CO, and the compressive strength of activated carbon significantly decreases. The carbon consumption originates from two aspects, the one from the regeneration of sulfur-containing products is more than twice of the other one from the decomposition of oxygen-containing functional groups.

Abstract

NOx, COx, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) widely exist in motor vehicle exhaust, coke oven flue gas, sintering flue gas, and pelletizing flue gas. Potassium species have an excellent promotion effect on various catalytic reactions for the treatment of these pollutants. This work reviews the promotion effects of potassium species on the reaction processes, including adsorption, desorption, the pathway and selectivity of reaction, recovery of active center, and effects on the properties of catalysts, including basicity, electron donor characteristics, redox property, active center, stability, and strong metal-to support interaction. The suggestions about how to improve the promotion effects of potassium species in various catalytic reactions are put forward, which involve controlling carriers, content, preparation methods and reaction conditions. The promotion effects of different alkali metals are also compared. The article number about commonly used active metals and promotion ways are also analyzed by bibliometric on NOx, COx, and VOCs. The promotion mechanism of potassium species on various reactions is similar; therefore, the application prospect of potassium species for the coupling control of multi-pollutants in industrial flue gas at low-temperature is described.

Abstract

The exploration of artificial luminogens with bright emission has been fully developed with the advancement of synthetic chemistry. However, many of them face problems like weakened emission in the aggregated state as well as poor renewability and sustainability. Therefore, the development of renewable and sustainable luminogens with anti-quenching function in the solid state, as well as to unveil the key factors that influence their luminescence behavior become highly significant. Herein, a new class of natural rosin-derived luminogens with aggregation-induced emission property (AIEgens) have been facilely obtained with good biocompatibility and targeted organelle imaging capability as well as photochromic behavior in the solid state. Mechanistic study indicates that the introduction of the alicyclic moiety helps suppress the excited-state molecular motion to enhance the solid-state emission. The current work fundamentally elucidates the role of alicyclic moiety in luminogen design and practically demonstrates a new source to large-scalely obtain biocompatible AIEgens.

267. Quantitative fluorescence tomography with functional and structural a priori information

Abstract

We demonstrate the necessity of functional and structural a priori information for quantitative fluorescence tomography (FT) with phantom studies. Here the functional a priori information is defined as the optical properties of the heterogeneous background that can be measured by a diffuse optical tomography (DOT) system. A CCD-based noncontact hybrid FT/DOT system that could take measurements at multiple views was built. Multimodality phantoms with multiple compartments were constructed and used in the experiments to mimic a heterogeneous optical background. A 3.6 mm diameter object deeply embedded in a heterogeneous optical background could be localized without any a priori information, but the recovered fluorophore concentration only reached one tenth of the true concentration. On the other hand, the true fluorophore concentration could be recovered when both functional and structural a priori information is utilized to guide and constrain the FT reconstruction algorithm. Abstract

After Hong Kong's return to Chinese Sovereignty in 1997, the terms 'mainlander' and 'Hongkonger' have been widely used by English-language media in Hong Kong to differentiate between people from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. This study examines representations of Chinese mainlanders and Hongkongers in a 17.4-million-token corpus containing 30,279 articles published between 1998 and 2019 by the South China Morning Post, a leading English-language newspaper in Hong Kong. By comparing the collocational behaviour of the noun lemmas mainlander and Hongkonger, the study identifies the topoi, or stereotypical characterizations, associated with the two groups. The analysis demonstrates the way in which the 'othering' of or sometimes discrimination against mainland migrants/visitors has served as part of the process through which the distinctive 'Hongkongers' identity' is pronounced after the 1997-handover in Hong Kong's English language newspaper of record. 278. Learning-Based Quality Assessment for Image Super-Resolution

Abstract

Image Super-Resolution (SR) techniques improve visual quality by enhancing the spatial resolution of images. Quality evaluation metrics play a critical role in comparing and optimizing SR algorithms, but current metrics achieve only limited success, largely due to the lack of large-scale quality databases, which are essential for learning accurate and robust SR quality metrics. In this work, we first build a large-scale SR image database using a novel semi-automatic labeling approach, which allows us to label a large number of images with manageable human workload. The resulting SR Image quality database with Semi-Automatic Ratings (SISAR), so far the largest of SR-IQA database, contains 8,400 images of 100 natural scenes. We train an end-to-end Deep Image SR Quality (DISQ) model by employing two-stream Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for feature extraction, followed by a feature fusion network for quality prediction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art metrics and achieves promising generalization performance in cross-database tests. The SISAR database and DISQ model will be made publicly available to facilitate reproducible research.

Abstract

To improve the denitrification efficiency for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 in the flue gas purification process, a low-rank activated coke (AC) was treated with ammonia (NH3·H2O) solution or nitric acid (HNO3) solution to increase the content and type of nitrogen-containing functional groups, and then the role of nitrogen-containing functional groups in the reduction of NO was analyzed. The modified AC samples were characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption to determine the pore structures and by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to detect the surface functional groups. After modification, the content of oxygen-containing functional groups on the AC surface increased, including quinone, lactone and carboxyl, which are favorable for SO2 adsorption. Meanwhile, the type and content of nitrogen-containing functional groups on the AC surface changed; these groups fall into two categories: active groups and non-active groups. Before and after the denitrification process, the regular changes in the content of active and non-active groups showed that the active groups with pyrrole-like or pyridine-like structures can promote NO adsorption and then strengthen the denitrification. On the other hand, active groups may be reduced by NH3 or oxidized by O2, referring to side reactions, to generate non-active groups such as nitro, nitrate, amine and imine. More importantly, the role of nitrogen-containing functional groups was identified in the denitrification process. This chemical modification method is effective for improving the performance of low-cost AC since the employed chemicals are commercially available.

Abstract

In recent years, activated carbon technology has been applied in various industrial flue gas purifications, with a high desulfurization efficiency but a relatively low denitrification efficiency. To strengthen the denitrification performance and further clarify which physicochemical property factor dominates the reduction of NO over activated carbon, this study used four kinds of nitrogen-enriched additives to modify the activated carbon, and the denitrification efficiency increased. The results from porosity analysis and Raman spectra showed that modification reduced the specific surface area and total pore volume of the activated carbon but promoted the disorder of graphite microcrystalline structure providing the adsorption and reaction active center for NO and NH3. The oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing functional groups were detected by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry before and after the reaction. The results revealed that the phenolic hydroxyl oxygen was transformed to carbonyl oxygen of quinone, and pyridine, pyrrole and quaternary nitrogen functional groups were converted to pyridine N-oxides and amines. The transient response experiment was employed to investigate the adsorption state of NO and NH3 in denitrification reaction by abruptly cutting off the intake of NO or NH3 under steady-state reaction. The results revealed that the reduction of NO with NH3 at 110 °C follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism, while at 150 °C with Elay-Rideal (E-R) mechanism and L-H mechanism. The pyridine, pyrrole and quaternary amine groups can adsorb NO in the gaseous state, and the phenolic hydroxyl group acts as the adsorption site of NH3 to produce quinones and N2 and complete the SCR reaction.

Abstract

Dementia is a prevalent neurological condition, yet the relationship between dementia and general anesthesia remains uncertain. The study aimed to explore the association between general anesthesia and dementia using a nationwide population-based database. The study extracted data from Taiwan's national health insurance, which encompassed the records of one million insured residents. A total of 59,817 patients aged 65 years and above, diagnosed with osteoarthritis between 2002 and 2010, were included. Among these patients, 3277 individuals with an initial diagnosis of dementia between 2004 and 2013 were matched with non-dementia patients based on age, gender, and the date of osteoarthritis diagnosis. Following a 1:2 random matching, the case group included 2171 patients with dementia, while the control group consisted of 4342 patients without dementia. The data was analyzed using conditional and unconditional logistic regressions. No significant differences in the odds of dementia were found between individuals exposed to general and regional anesthesia during hip/knee replacement surgeries (OR = 1.11; 95%CI: 0.73–1.70), after adjusting for age, sex, and co-morbidities. Similarly, there were no significant differences in the odds of dementia based on different durations of anesthesia exposure (General: <2 h: OR = 0.91, 95%CI = 0.43–1.92; 2-4 h: OR = 1.21, 95%CI = 0.82–1.79; >4 h: OR = 0.39, 95%CI = 0.15–1.01; compared to no exposure. Regional: <2 h: OR = 1.18, 95%CI = 0.85–1.62; 2-4 h: OR = 0.9, 95%CI = 0.64–1.27; >4 h: OR = 0.55, 95%CI = 0.15–1.96; compared to no exposure). Likewise, no significant differences were observed in the odds of dementia based on the number of replacement surgeries (twice: OR = 0.74, 95%CI = 0.44–1.23, compared to once). Neither general anesthesia nor regional anesthesia in hip/knee surgery was associated with dementia. Abstract

Analyzing the environmental factors affecting benthic communities in coastal areas is crucial for uncovering key factors that require conservation action. Here, we collected benthic and environmental (physical-chemical-historical and land-based) data for 433 transects in Taiwan. Using a k -means approach, five communities dominated by crustose coralline algae, turfs, stony corals, digitate, or bushy octocorals were first delineated. Conditional random forest models then identified physical, chemical, and land-based factors (e.g., light intensity, nitrite, and population density) relevant to community delineation and occurrence. Historical factors, including typhoons and temperature anomalies, had only little effect. The prevalent turf community correlated positively with chemical and land-based drivers, which suggests that anthropogenic impacts are causing a benthic homogenization. This mechanism may mask the effects of climate disturbances and regional differentiation of benthic assemblages. Consequently, management of nutrient enrichment and terrestrial runoff is urgently needed to improve community resilience in Taiwan amidst increasing challenges of climate change. Abstract

The sewage treatment system based on particle swarm optimization algorithm to improve energy efficiency is analyzed. Firstly, this paper takes particle swarm optimization algorithm and activated sludge sewage treatment method as the research object, and with the help of experimental analysis method, the analysis of particle swarm optimization algorithm to improve the energy efficiency of sewage treatment system has achieved good results. From the experimental results of sewage treatment system, it plays an important role in realizing the effective treatment of sewage and improving the economic and social benefits of sewage treatment. Then, particle swarm optimization algorithm can play an effective role in sewage treatment system. Therefore, actively promoting the application of this algorithm can improve the energy efficiency of sewage treatment system. Finally, the optimal control solution of sewage treatment based on improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is successfully applied to a municipal sewage treatment plant, which effectively saves electric energy. The experimental results show that the solution designed in this paper can also be applied to other sewage plants using activated sludge oxidation ditch process, and has certain popularization value.

Abstract

To strengthen the CO oxidation activity of activated carbon for flue gas purification, AC was modified through acid treatment and metal loading. AC-supported Cu shows excellent catalytic oxidation activity compared with other metal-modified AC samples. To investigate the action modes of Cu loaded on activated carbon and the mechanism of CO oxidation, various samples were characterized by XRD, N2O titration, SEM, N2 physisorption, TPD, H2-TPR, XPS, in situ DRIFTS and EPR. The results show that oxygen-containing functional groups increase the loading amount and dispersion of Cu. Moreover, Cu species strongly bound to oxygen-containing functional groups are the main contributors to CO oxidation. The roles of oxygen-containing functional groups are further revealed: carboxyl groups are the anchoring sites of Cu, and hydroxyl groups supply oxygen to restore the active structure. Similarly, Ce indirectly promote the oxidation activity of CO by re-oxidizing Cu+ to Cu2+, which accelerates the catalytic cycle. The reaction mechanism on AC-supported Cu samples has been proposed to follow the double-site Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism, with Cu2+ as oxidation sites, Cu+ as adsorption sites and the formation of oxygen vacancies on Cu+ during the reaction. AC-Cu performs the highest oxidation activity at a proportion of Cu+ of 0.5–0.6. SO2 causes irreversible chemical poisoning to CO oxidation, while NO leads to reversible poisoning due to competitive adsorption with CO. The novel AC-supported Cu catalyst with Ce improves the resistance against SO2 and NO, and the reason is explained. These findings provide theoretical guidance for the preparation and application of metal-modified activated carbon.

Abstract

High carbon consumption is an important factor restricting the wide application of activated carbon technology for flue gas purification. A fixed-bed reactor combined with a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer was used to explore the source of carbon consumption at various SO2 concentrations and cyclic adsorption–regeneration times. The results demonstrate that carbon consumption originates from two sources and is mainly determined by the reaction of H2SO4 and C at high SO2 concentrations and by the thermal decomposition of oxygen-containing functional groups at low SO2 concentrations. An interesting observed phenomenon is that carbon consumption does not increase as the SO2 concentration increases. The conversion mechanism reveals that carboxylic and anhydride groups are converted to phenol and quinone groups, which do not easily decompose with increasing SO2 concentration. In the process of cyclic adsorption–regeneration, it is discovered that the carbon consumption in the first cycle is several times higher than that in the following cycles due to the decomposition of functional groups from the activated carbon itself. The regeneration mechanism of functional groups has been elucidated. The carboxylic acid and the phenolic hydroxyl on the surface of activated carbon are consumed in the regeneration process and formed again from the conversion of carbonyl groups in the next adsorption process under the roles of O2 and H2O. Abstract

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination behaviors among Chinese college students (CCS) in the United States are affected by social determinants of health. Using a self‐report questionnaire and a snowball sampling technique, this cross‐sectional study investigated (a) HPV vaccination practices; (b) primary social networking platforms and preferred means of receiving HPV information; and (c) the influence of acculturation on HPV vaccination, HPV information sources, and social networking use among 213 CCS aged 18–26 in the United States. About half (50.7%) had received one to three doses of an HPV vaccine, and 91.7% had received their first dose. The most popular social networking platforms were WeChat (69.5%), Instagram (58.7%), text messaging (55.4%), and Facebook (47.4%). Preferred means of receiving future HPV information included the internet, online social networking, and health professionals. Participants with high Asian identification (AI) were less likely to receive the HPV vaccine than those with high Western identification. Participants with high AI were more likely to use WeChat for their social networking but less likely to use US‐based social media platforms. Acculturation, preferred social networking platforms, and sources and communication of HPV (i.e., health professionals, family members, schoolteachers, friends) influenced participants' HPV vaccination. To promote equity of access to health messages and increase HPV vaccination, future efforts should pay attention to CCS with high AI and incorporate their cultural beliefs and practices. Given that nonprofessionals (e.g., family, friends) were influential factors in HPV vaccination, it is critical to tailor interventions for CCS to the recipients and their social circles. Abstract

Background: The progression of Biliary Atresia (BA) is associated with the number of reactive ductular cells (RDCs) whose heterogeneity in origin and evolution in humans remains unknown. SOX9-positive liver progenitor-like cells (LPLCs) have been shown to participate in RDCs and new hepatocyte formation during cholestatic liver regeneration in an animal model, which implies the possibility that hepatocyte-reprogrammed LPLCs could be a source of RDCs in BA. The present study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of SOX9-positive LPLCs in BA for exploring new possible therapeutic targets by manipulating the bi-differentiation process of LPLCs to prevent disease progression. Methods: Twenty-eight patients, including 24 patients with BA and 4 patients with Congenital Choledochal Cyst as the control group, were retrospectively recruited. Liver biopsy samples were classified histologically using a 4-point scale based on fibrosis severity. LPLCs were detected by SOX9 and HNF4A double positive staining. Single immunohistochemistry, double immunohistochemistry, and multiple immunofluorescence staining were used to determine the different cell types and characteristics of LPLCs. Results: The prognostic predictors of BA, namely total bile acid (TBA), RDCs, and fibrosis, were correlated to the emergence of LPLCs. SOX9 and HNF4A double-positive LPLCs co-stained rarely with relevant markers of portal hepatic progenitor cells (portal-HPCs), including CK19, CK7, EPCAM, PROM1 (CD133), TROP2, and AFP. Under cholestasis conditions, LPLCs acquired superior proliferation and anti-senescence ability among hepatocytes. Moreover, LPLCs arranged as a pseudo-rosette structure appeared from the periportal parenchyma to the portal region, which implied the differentiation from hepatocyte-reprogrammed LPLCs to RDCs with the progression of cholestasis. Conclusions: LPLCs are associated with disease progression and prognostic factors of BA. The bipotent characteristics of LPLCs are different from those of portal-HPCs. As cholestasis progresses, LPLCs appear to gain superior proliferation and anti-senescence ability and continually differentiate to RDCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: Compared to CONV‐RT (with conventional dose rate), FLASH‐RT (with ultra‐high dose rate) can provide biological dose sparing for organs‐at‐risk (OARs) via the so‐called FLASH effect, in addition to physical dose sparing. However, the FLASH effect only occurs, when both dose and dose rate meet certain minimum thresholds. This work will develop a simultaneous dose and dose rate optimization (SDDRO) method accounting for both FLASH dose and dose rate constraints during treatment planning for pencil‐beam‐scanning proton therapy. Methods: SDDRO optimizes the FLASH effect (specific to FLASH‐RT) as well as the dose distribution (similar to CONV‐RT). The nonlinear dose rate constraint is linearized, and the reformulated optimization problem is efficiently solved via iterative convex relaxation powered by alternating direction method of multipliers. To resolve and quantify the generic tradeoff of FLASH‐RT between FLASH and dose optimization, we propose the use of FLASH effective dose based on dose modifying factor (DMF) owing to the FLASH effect. Results: FLASH‐RT via transmission beams (TB) (IMPT‐TB or SDDRO) and CONV‐RT via Bragg peaks (BP) (IMPT‐BP) were evaluated for clinical prostate, lung, head‐and‐neck (HN), and brain cases. Despite the use of TB, which is generally suboptimal to BP for normal tissue sparing, FLASH‐RT via SDDRO considerably reduced FLASH effective dose for high‐dose OAR adjacent to the target. For example, in the lung SBRT case, the max esophageal dose constraint 27 Gy was only met by SDDRO (24.8 Gy), compared to IMPT‐BP (35.3 Gy) or IMPT‐TB (36.6 Gy); in the brain SRS case, the brain constraint V12Gy≤15cc was also only met by SDDRO (13.7cc), compared to IMPT‐BP (43.9cc) or IMPT‐TB (18.4cc). In addition, SDDRO substantially improved the FLASH coverage from IMPT‐TB, e.g., an increase from 37.2% to 67.1% for lung, from 39.1% to 58.3% for prostate, from 65.4% to 82.1% for HN, from 50.8% to 73.3% for the brain. Conclusions: Both FLASH dose and dose rate constraints are incorporated into SDDRO for FLASH‐RT that jointly optimizes the FLASH effect and physical dose distribution. FLASH effective dose via FLASH DMF is introduced to reconcile the tradeoff between physical dose sparing and FLASH sparing, and quantify the net effective gain from CONV‐RT to FLASH‐RT.
