Abstract

Unprecedented neutral perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisimide (PBI) radicals and biradicals were synthesized by facile chemical oxidation of 4-hydroxyarylsubstituted PBIs. Subsequent characterization by optical and magnetic spectroscopic techniques, as well as quantum chemical calculations, revealed an open-shell singlet biradical ground state for the PBI biradical OS-2" (=1.2191) with a relatively small singlet-triplet energy gap of 0.041 eV and a large singlet biradical character of y=0.72. Abstract

The reversal of (anti)aromaticity in a molecule's triplet excited state compared with its closed-shell singlet ground state is known as Baird's rule and has attracted the interest of synthetic, physical organic chemists and theorists because of the potential to modulate the fundamental properties of highly conjugated molecules. Here we show that two closely related bis-rhodium hexaphyrins (R26H and R28H) containing [26] and [28] π-electron peripheries, respectively, exhibit properties consistent with Baird's rule. In the ground state, R26H exhibits a sharp Soret-like band and distinct Q-like bands characteristic of an aromatic porphyrinoid, whereas R28H exhibits a broad absorption spectrum without Q-like bands, which is typical of an antiaromatic porphyrinoid. In contrast, the T-T absorption of R26H is broad, weak and featureless, whereas that of R28H displays an intense and sharp Soret-like band. These spectral signatures, in combination with quantum chemical calculations, are in line with qualitative expectations based on Baird's rule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of water-based exercises on the physical functions and quality of life (QOL) in community-dwelling elderly people with history of falling. Materials and methods Participants were randomly assigned to the water-based exercise group ( n = 34) or land-based exercise groups ( n = 32). To identify the effects on physical functions, muscle strength, flexibility, and mobility were measured. QOL and fear of falling were evaluated using the Short Form 36-item questionnaire and the modified falls efficacy scale (M-FES). The measurements were performed before and after the 10-week training period. Results Within-group analysis indicated that hip abduction and adduction strength improved significantly in both groups ( p = 0.005; p = 0.007). However, no statistically significant within-group differences were found in the back scratch test ( p = 0.766) and chair sit-and-reach test ( p = 0.870). QOL was significantly different in both groups (health transition: p = 0.014, physical functioning: p < 0.001, role physical: p < 0.001, role emotional: p = 0.002, bodily pain: p < 0.001, vitality: p < 0.001, and mental health: p < 0.001). There was a significant difference in the M-FES in both groups ( p = 0.040). Conclusions These results indicate that water-based exercises are beneficial to improve the QOL, as well as physical activities, of community-dwelling elderly compared with land-based exercise. Abstract

Arctic microalgae are considered alternative sources for biodiesel production in cold climates. In this study, we describe the isolation of a novel Chlamydomonas sp. from Arctic sea ice, which we named ArM0029A, and the development of a new culture medium, HAP3, that allows greater cell growth and density than seawater-based media. The fatty acid composition of ArM0029A was characterized at various sodium chloride (NaCl) concentrations. Culture at low NaCl concentration (7 ‰), relative to seawater, enhanced growth and fatty acid accumulation of ArM0029A. Total fatty acid content reached a maximum of approximately 27 % of dry weight at 7 ‰ NaCl without nitrogen, and unsaturated fatty acids, such as C16:4, C18:2, and C18:3, were predominant. Interestingly, the proportion of C16:3 was significantly induced in ArM0029A by salt stress. These findings indicate that use of ArM0029A may be feasible for production of lipids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids, under cold climatic conditions via adjustment of NaCl concentrations.
