The reactivity of the phthalimide N-oxyl radical (PINO) toward the N-methyl C-H bond of a number of 4-X-substituted N,N-dimethylanilines (X = OMe, OPh, CF(3), CO(2)Et, CN) has been investigated by product and kinetic analysis. PINO was generated in CH(3)CN by reaction of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) with Pb(OAc)(4) or, for the kinetic study of the most reactive substrates (X = OMe, OPh), with tert-butoxyl radical produced by 266 nm laser flash photolysis of di-tert-butyl peroxide. The reaction was found to lead to the N-demethylation of the N,N-dimethylaniline with a rate very sensitive to the electron donating power of the substituent (rho(+) = -2.5) as well as to the oxidation potential of the substrates. With appropriately deuterated N,N-dimethylanilines the intermolecular and intramolecular deuterium kinetic isotope effects (DKIEs) were measured for some substrates (X = OMe, CO(2)Et, CN) with the following results. First, intramolecular DKIE [(k(H)/k(D))(intra)] was found to be always different and higher than intermolecular DKIE [(k(H)/k(D))(inter)]; second, no intermolecular DKIE [(k(H)/k(D))(inter) = 1] was observed for X = OMe, whereas substantial values of (k(H)/k(D))(inter) were exhibited by X = CO(2)Et (4.8) and X = CN (5.8). These results, while are incompatible with a single step hydrogen atom transfer from the N-C-H bond to the N-oxyl radical, as proposed for the reaction of PINO with benzylic C-H bonds, can be nicely interpreted on the basis of a two-step mechanism involving a reversible electron transfer from the aniline to PINO leading to an anilinium radical cation, followed by a proton-transfer step that produces an alpha-amino carbon radical. In line with this conclusion the reactivity data exhibited a good fit with the Marcus equation and a lambda value of 37.6 kcal mol(-1) was calculated for the reorganization energy required in this electron-transfer process. From this value, a quite high reorganization energy (>60 kcal mol(-1)) is estimated for the PINO/NHPI(-H)(-) self-exchange reaction. It is suggested that the N-demethylated product derives from the reaction of the alpha-amino carbon radical with PINO to form either a cross-coupling product or an alpha-amino carbocation. Both species may react with the small amounts of H(2)O present in the medium to form a carbinolamine that, again by hydrolysis, can be eventually converted into the N-demethylated product.

[reaction: see text] A product and time-resolved kinetic study of the effect of ring substitution on the reactivity of 1,1-diarylalkoxyl radicals has been carried out. The radicals undergo an O-neophyl shift to give the isomeric 1-aryl-1-aryloxyalkyl radicals from which the corresponding aromatic ketones are formed. The rearrangement rate constants are influenced by ring substitution, increasing in the presence of electron-withdrawing substituents and decreasing in the presence of electron-donating ones. From the results of product and kinetic studies, the following migratory aptitudes have been obtained: 4-trifluoromethylphenyl > phenyl approximately = 4-methylphenyl > 4-methoxyphenyl. Excellent Hammett-type correlations between the sigma+ substituent constants and both the visible absorption band maxima and the rearrangement rate constants have been obtained. The experimental results indicate that the rearrangement is governed by electronic effects in the starting 1,1-diarylalkoxyl radicals, whereas the stability of the rearranged carbon-centered radical plays a minor role, in line with a reactant-like transition state, strongly supporting the hypothesis that the O-neophyl rearrangement of 1,1-diarylalkoxyl radicals proceeds through a concerted mechanism.

[reaction: see text] Ketyl radicals with lignin related structures have been generated by means of radiation chemical and photochemical techniques. In the former studies ketyl radicals are produced by reaction of alpha-carbonyl-beta-aryl ether lignin models with the solvated electron produced by pulse radiolysis of an aqueous solution at pH 6.0. The UV-vis spectra of ketyl radicals are characterized by three main absorption bands. The shape and position of these bands slightly change when the spectra are recorded in alkaline solution (pH 11.0) being now assigned to the ketyl radical anions and a pKa = 9.5 is determined for the 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-2-phenoxyethanol-1-yl radical. Decay rates of ketyl radicals are found to be dose dependent and, at low doses, lie in the range (1.7-2.7) x 10(3) s(-1). In the presence of oxygen a fast decay of the ketyl radicals is observed (k2 = 1.8-2.7 x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1)) that is accompanied by the formation of stable products, i.e., the starting ketones. In the photochemical studies ketyl radicals have been produced by charge-transfer (CT) photoactivation of the electron donor-acceptor salts of methyl viologen (MV2+) with alpha-hydroxy-alpha-phenoxymethyl-aryl acetates. This process leads to the instantaneous formation of the reduced acceptor (methyl viologen radical cation, MV+*), as is clearly shown in a laser flash photolysis experiment by the two absorption bands centered at 390 and 605 nm, and an acyloxyl radical [ArC(CO2*))(OH)CH2(OC6H5)], which undergoes a very fast decarboxylation with formation of the ketyl radicals. Steady-state photoirradiation of the CT ion pairs indicates that 1-aryl-2-phenoxyethanones are formed as primary photoproducts by oxidation of ketyl radicals by MV2+ (under argon) or by molecular oxygen. Small amounts of acetophenones are formed by further photolysis of 1-aryl-2-phenoxyethanones and not by beta-fragmentation of the ketyl radicals. The high reactivity of ketyl radicals with oxygen coupled with the low rates of beta-fragmentation of the same species have an important bearing in the context of the photoyellowing of lignin containing pulps and papers.

[reaction: see text] The absolute rate constants for beta-scission of a series of benzocycloalken-1-oxyl radicals and of the 2-(4-methylphenyl)-2-butoxyl radical have been measured directly by laser flash photolysis. The benzocycloalken-1-oxyl radicals undergo ring opening with rates which parallel the ring strain of the corresponding cycloalkanes. In the 1-X-indan-1-oxyl radical series, ring opening is observed when X = H, Me, whereas exclusive C-X bond cleavage occurs when X = Et. The factors governing the fragmentation regioselectivity are discussed.

The reactivity of the phthalimide N-oxyl radical (PINO) toward the OH bond of a series of substituted phenols was kinetically investigated in CH(3)CN. The reaction selectivity and the deuterium kinetic isotope effect were determined. Information on the kinetic solvent effect was also obtained with phenol as the substrate.

The C-C beta-scission reactions of 1-alkylcycloalkoxyl radicals, generated photochemically by visible light irradiation of CH2Cl2 solutions containing the parent 1-alkylcycloalkanols, (diacetoxy)iodobenzene (DIB), and I2, have been investigated through the analysis of the reaction products. The 1-alkylcycloalkoxyl radicals undergo competition between ring opening and C-alkyl bond cleavage as a function of ring size and of the nature of the alkyl substituent. With the 1-propylcycloheptoxyl, 1-propylcyclooctoxyl,and 1-phenylcyclooctoxyl radicals, formation of products deriving from an intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen atom abstraction reaction from the cycloalkane ring has also been observed. The results are discussed in terms of release of ring strain associated to ring opening, stability of the alkyl radical formed by C-alkyl cleavage, and with cycloheptoxyl and cyclooctoxyl radicals, also in terms of the possibility of achieving a favorable geometry for intramolecular hydrogen atom abstraction., (Copyright 2004 American Chemical Society)

A series of aryl-substituted N-hydroxyphthalimides (X-NHPIs) containing either electron-withdrawing groups (4-CH(3)OCO, 3-F) or electron-donating groups (4-CH(3), 4-CH(3)O, 3-CH(3)O, 3,6-(CH(3)O)(2)) have been used as catalysts in the aerobic oxidation of primary and secondary benzylic alcohols. The selective formation of aromatic aldehydes was observed in the oxidation of primary alcohols; aromatic ketones were the exclusive products in the oxidation of secondary alcohols. O-H bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of X-NHPIs have been determined by using the EPR radical equilibration technique. BDEs increase with increasing the electron-withdrawing properties of the aryl substituent. Kinetic isotope effect studies and the increase of the substrate oxidation rate by increasing the electron-withdrawing power of the NHPI aryl substituent indicate a rate-determining benzylic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the alcohol to the aryl-substituted phthalimide-N-oxyl radical (X-PINO). Besides enthalpic effects, polar effects also play a role in the HAT process, as shown by the negative rho values of the Hammett correlation with sigma(+) and by the decrease of the rho values (from -0.54 to -0.70) by increasing the electron-withdrawing properties of the NHPI aryl substituent. The relative reactivity of 3-CH(3)O-C(6)H(4)CH(2)OH and 3,4-(CH(3)O)(2)-C(6)H(3)CH(2)OH, which is higher than expected on the basis of the sigma(+) values, the small values of relative reactivity of primary vs secondary benzylic alcohols, and the decrease of the rho values by increasing the electron-withdrawing properties of the NHPI aryl substituent, suggest that the HAT process takes place inside a charge-transfer (CT) complex formed by the X-PINO and the benzylic alcohol.

Veratrylchitosan, a polysaccharide-supported lignin model compound, has been synthesised by covalently attaching 3-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyloxy)propionic acid to the polysaccharide chitosan through an amide linkage. When this polymer was used as a substrate in the oxidation promoted by lignin peroxidase (LiP), significant decomposition of the lignin model resulted in the formation of veratraldehyde. The oxidation mechanism involves an initial transfer of one electron from chitosan to the active species of LiP (LiP I) followed by C(alpha)-H deprotonation of an aromatic cation radical. A benzylic radical is then formed which is further oxidised to a benzyl cation. Reaction with water and hydrolysis of the hemiacetal then lead to veratraldehyde formation. An increase in the yields of the oxidation product is observed in the presence of the mediator 2-chloro-1,4-dimethoxybenzene, thus indicating that a more efficient degradation results from the transfer of an electron from the polymer to the radical cation of the mediator.

The H(2)O(2)-promoted oxidations of the two nonphenolic beta-O-aryl lignin model trimers 1 and 2, catalyzed by lignin peroxidase (LiP) at pH = 3.5, have been studied. The results have been compared with those obtained in the oxidation of 1 and 2 with the genuine one-electron oxidant potassium 12-tungstocobalt(III)ate. These models present a different substitution pattern of the three aromatic rings, and by one-electron oxidation, they form radical cations with the positive charge, which is localized in the dialkoxylated ring as also evidenced by a pulse radiolysis study. Both the oxidations with the enzymatic and with the chemical systems lead to the formation of products deriving from the cleavage of C-C and C-H bonds in a beta position with respect to the radical cation with the charge residing in the dialkoxylated ring (3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde (5) and a trimeric ketone 6 in the oxidation of 1 and a dimeric aldehyde 8 and a trimeric ketone 9 in the oxidation of 2). These products are accompanied by a dimeric aldehyde 7 in the oxidation of 1 and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde (10) in the oxidation of 2. The unexpected formation of these two products has been explained by suggesting that 1.+ and 2.+ can also undergo an intramolecular electron transfer leading to the radical cations 1a.+ and 2a.+ with the charge residing in a monoalkoxylated ring. The fast cleavage of a C-C bond beta to this ring, leading to 7 from 1.+ and to 10 from 2.+, is the driving force of the endoergonic electron transfer. A kinetic steady-state investigation of the LiP-catalyzed oxidation of the trimer 2, the dimeric model 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-phenoxy-1-ethanol (4), and 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl alcohol (3) has indicated that the turnover number (k(cat)) and the affinity for the enzyme decrease significantly by increasing the size of the model compound. In contrast, the three substrates exhibited a very similar reactivity toward a chemical oxidant [Co(III)W]. This suggests a size-dependent interaction of the enzyme with the substrate which may influence the efficiency of the electron transfer.

Lignin peroxidase catalyses the H(2)O(2)-induced oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyltrimethylsilane by an electron transfer mechanism. The intermediate radical cation undergoes preferentially C(alpha)[bond]H deprotonation to give 4-methoxybenzaldehyde whereas C(alpha)[bond]Si bond cleavage is a minor fragmentation pathway and leads to 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol. Similar results are obtained in the oxidation catalysed by the water soluble model compound 5,10,15,20-tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrinatoiron(III) pentachloride. Instead, in the oxidation promoted by the genuine one-electron transfer oxidant potassium dodecatungstocobalt(III)ate C(alpha)[bond]Si bond cleavage is the exclusive fragmentation process of the intermediate radical cation. It is suggested that in the enzymatic and biomimetic oxidations of 4-methoxybenzyltrimethylsilane the deprotonation of the intermediate radical cation is promoted by the reduced form [PorFe(IV)[double bond]O] of the active oxidant, which is an iron-oxo porphyrin radical cation.

The oxygen atom transfer-electron transfer (ET) mechanistic dichotomy has been investigated in the oxidation of a number of aryl sulfides by H2O2 in acidic (pH 3) aqueous medium catalysed by the water soluble iron(III) porphyrin 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine-p,p',p",p"'-tetrasulfonic acid iron(III) chloride (FeTPPSCl). Under these reaction conditions, the iron-oxo complex porphyrin radical cation, P+. Fe(IV)=O, should be the active oxidant. When the oxidation of a series of para-X substituted phenyl alkyl sulfides (X = OCH3, CH3, H, Br, CN) was studied the corresponding sulfoxides were the only observed product and the reaction yields as well as the reactivity were little influenced by the nature of X as well as by the bulkiness of the alkyl group. Labelling experiments using H(2)18O or H(2)18O2 clearly indicated that the oxygen atom in the sulfoxides comes exclusively from the oxidant. Moreover, no fragmentation products were observed in the oxidation of a benzyl phenyl sulfide whose radical cation is expected to undergo cleavage of the beta C-H and C-S bonds. These results would seem to suggest a direct oxygen atom transfer from the iron-oxo complex to the sulfide. However, competitive experiments between thioanisole (E degree = 1.49 V vs. NHE in H2O) and N,N-dimethylaniline (E degree = 0.97 V vs. NHE in H2O) resulted in exclusive N-demethylation, whereas the oxidation of N-methylphenothiazine (10, E degree = 0.95 V vs. NHE in CH3CN) and N,N-dimethyl-4-methylthioaniline (11, E degree = 0.65 V vs. NHE in H2O) produced the corresponding sulfoxide with complete oxygen incorporation from the oxidant. Since an ET mechanism must certainly hold in the reactions of 10 and 11, the oxygen incorporation experiments indicate that the intermediate radical cation, once formed, has to react with PFe(IV)=O (the reduced form of the iron-oxo complex which is formed by the ET step) in a fast oxygen rebound. Thus, an ET step followed by a fast oxygen rebound is also suggested for the other sulfides investigated in this work.

Spectral properties and reactivities of ring-methoxylated diarylmethane and diarylmethanol radical cations, generated in aqueous solution by pulse and gamma-radiolysis and by the one-electron chemical oxidant potassium 12-tungstocobalt(III)ate, have been studied. The radical cations display three bands in the UV, visible, and vis-NIR regions of the spectrum. The vis-NIR band is assigned to an intramolecular charge resonance interaction (CR) between the neutral donor and charged acceptor rings, as indicated by the observation that the relative intensity of the vis-NIR band compared to that of the UV and visible bands does not increase with increasing substrate concentration and that the position and intensity of this band is influenced by the ring-substitution pattern. In acidic solution (pH = 4), monomethoxylated diarylmethanol radical cations 1a.(+ -)1e.(+) decay by C(alpha)-H deprotonation [k = (1.7-1.9) x 10(4)s(-1)] through the intermediacy of a ketyl radical, which is further oxidized in the reaction medium to give the corresponding benzophenones, as evidenced by both time-resolved spectroscopic and product studies. With the dimethoxylated radical cation 2.(+), C(alpha)-H deprotonation is instead significantly slower (k = 6.7 x 10(2)s(-1)). In basic solution, 1a.(+)-1e.(+) undergo (-)OH-induced deprotonation from the alpha-OH group with k(OH.)approximately equal to 1.4 x 10(10)M(-1)s(-1), leading to a ketyl radical anion, which is oxidized in the reaction medium to the corresponding benzophenone.
