An analysis of the 'new' European social model for employment relations was conducted in order to assess its potential as a tool for the analysis of European social economics. The model, which exhibits a strong resemblance to 'partnership' agreements in the UK, appears to be immune to most of the criticisms raised against former models. However, given the prevailing political and economic conditions of the European Union countries, the plausibility of the social model continues to be doubtful.

A 1988 US Supreme Court ruling upholds the disqualification of strikers from participation in the federally-funded Food Stamp Program. The Court ruled in a five-to-three decision that the Food Stamp Act was passed by Congress to reduce hunger, cut malnutrition, and boost the agricultural economy, but not to subsidize workers' personal decisions to reject their companies' contract offers. Unions argued unsuccessfully that a Congressional ban on strikers' participation in the Food Stamp Program violates strikers' rights to free association and free speech. It is suggested that there has been a shift in government policy away from the labor cause and toward a more general consideration of societal needs. The Court noted in its decision that it is not free to challenge Congress' views on social or economic policy.
