We investigate sensing-assisted predictive beamforming schemes for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication by exploiting the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) functionalities at the roadside unit (RSU). The RSU deploys a massive multi-input-multi-output (mMIMO) array and operates at millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies. The pencil-sharp mMIMO beams and fine range resolution achieved at mmWave, implicates that the point target assumption is impractical in such V2I networks, as the volume and shape of the vehicles become essential for beamforming. Simply pointing a beam to the vehicle may result in the communication receiver (CR) never lying in the beam, even when the vehicle's trajectory is accurately tracked. To tackle this problem, we consider the extended vehicle target with two novel beam tracking schemes. For the first scheme, the beamwidth is adjusted in real-time to cover the entire vehicle, followed by an extended Kalman filtering (EKF) algorithm to predict and track the position of CR according to the resolved high-resolution scatterers. An upgraded scheme is further proposed by splitting each transmission block into two stages. The first stage is exploited for ISAC transmission, where a wide beam is adopted for both communication and sensing. Based on the sensed results at the first stage, the second stage is dedicated to communication by adopting a pencil-sharp beam, yielding a significant improvement of the achievable rate. We further reveal the inherent tradeoff between the two stages in terms of their durations, and develop an optimal time allocation strategy that maximizes the average achievable rate. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the superiorities of proposed schemes over the state-of-the-art methods.

This paper proposes an integrated sensing, jamming, and communications (ISJC) framework for securing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless networks. The proposed framework advocates the dual use of artificial noise transmitted by an information UAV for simultaneous jamming and sensing of an eavesdropping UAV. Based on the information sensed in the previous time slot, an optimization problem for online resource allocation design is formulated to maximize the number of securely served users in the current time slot, while taking into account a tracking performance constraint and quality-of-service (QoS) requirements regarding the leakage information rate to the eavesdropper and the downlink data rate to the legitimate users. A channel correlation-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution for the design problem. In this paper, we explore a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system for achieving integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). The technique of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is leveraged to overcome the frequency-selective fading of the wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with one multi-antenna DFRC base station (BS) and multiple single-antenna user equipment (UEs). In order to restrain the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM signals, we aim to jointly design low-PAPR DFRC MIMO-OFDM waveforms. This is done by utilizing a weighted objective function on both communication and radar performance metrics under power and PAPR constraints. The formulated optimization problems can be equivalently transformed into standard semi-definite programming (SDP) and can be effectively solved by semi-definite relaxation (SDR) method, where we prove that globally optimal rank-1 solution can be obtained in general. We further develop a low-complexity method to solve the problems with much reduced overheads. Moreover, the practical scenario with oversampling on OFDM signals is further considered, which has a significant effect on the resulting PAPR levels. The feasibility, effectiveness, and flexibility of the proposed low- PAPR DFRC MIMO-OFDM waveform design methods are demonstrated by a range of simulations on communication sum rate, symbol error rate as well as radar beampattern and detection probability., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Binary star systems are assumed to be co-natal and coeval, thus to have identical chemical composition. In this work we aim to test the hypothesis that there is a connection between observed element abundance patterns and the formation of planets using binary stars. Moreover, we also want to test how atomic diffusion might influence the observed abundance patterns. We conduct a strictly line-by-line differential chemical abundance analysis of 7 binary systems. Stellar atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances are obtained with extremely high precision (< 3.5%) using the high quality spectra from VLT/UVES and Keck/HIRES. We find that 4 of 7 binary systems show subtle abundance differences (0.01 - 0.03 dex) without clear correlations with the condensation temperature, including two planet-hosting pairs. The other 3 binary systems exhibit similar degree of abundance differences correlating with the condensation temperature. We do not find any clear relation between the abundance differences and the occurrence of known planets in our systems. Instead, the overall abundance offsets observed in the binary systems (4 of 7) could be due to the effects of atomic diffusion. Although giant planet formation does not necessarily imprint chemical signatures onto the host star, the differences in the observed abundance trends with condensation temperature, on the other hand, are likely associated with diverse histories of planet formation (e.g., formation location). As the standardization of 5G is being solidified, researchers are speculating what 6G will be. Integrating sensing functionality is emerging as a key feature of the 6G Radio Access Network (RAN), allowing to exploit the dense cell infrastructure of 5G for constructing a perceptive network. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview on the background, range of key applications and state-of-the-art approaches of Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC). We commence by discussing the interplay between sensing and communications (S&C) from a historical point of view, and then consider multiple facets of ISAC and its performance gains. By introducing both ongoing and potential use cases, we shed light on industrial progress and standardization activities related to ISAC. We analyze a number of performance tradeoffs between S&C, spanning from information theoretical limits, tradeoffs in physical layer performance, to the tradeoff in cross-layer designs. Next, we discuss signal processing aspects of ISAC, namely ISAC waveform design and receive signal processing. As a step further, we provide our vision on the deeper integration between S&C within the framework of perceptive networks, where the two functionalities are expected to mutually assist each other, i.e., communication-assisted sensing and sensing-assisted communications. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for the network slicing problem which attempts to map multiple customized virtual network requests (also called services) to a common shared network infrastructure and allocate network resources to meet diverse service requirements. The problem has been formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation in the literature. We first propose a novel linear programming (LP) relaxation of the MILP formulation. We show that compared with a natural LP relaxation of the MILP formulation, the novel LP relaxation is much more compact in terms of smaller numbers of variables and constraints, and much stronger in terms of providing a better LP bound, which makes it particularly suitable to be embedded in an LP relaxation based algorithm. Then we design an efficient two-stage LP dynamic rounding-and-refinement algorithm based on this novel LP relaxation. In the first stage, the proposed algorithm uses an LP dynamic rounding procedure to place the virtual network functions of all services into cloud nodes while taking traffic routing of all services into consideration; in the second stage, the proposed algorithm uses an iterative LP refinement procedure to obtain a solution for traffic routing of all services with their end-to-end delay constraints being satisfied. Compared with the existing algorithms which either have an exponential complexity or return a low-quality solution, our proposed algorithm achieves a better trade-off between the solution quality and the computational complexity. In particular, the worst-case complexity of our proposed algorithm is polynomial, which makes it suitable for solving large-scale problems. In this demo, we present VirtualConductor, a system that can generate conducting video from any given music and a single user's image. First, a large-scale conductor motion dataset is collected and constructed. Then, we propose Audio Motion Correspondence Network (AMCNet) and adversarial-perceptual learning to learn the cross-modal relationship and generate diverse, plausible, music-synchronized motion. Finally, we combine 3D animation rendering and a pose transfer model to synthesize conducting video from a single given user's image. Characterizing the sensing and communication performance tradeoff in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems is challenging in the applications of learning-based human motion recognition. This is because of the large experimental datasets and the black-box nature of deep neural networks. This paper presents SDP3, a Simulation-Driven Performance Predictor and oPtimizer, which consists of SDP3 data simulator, SDP3 performance predictor and SDP3 performance optimizer. Specifically, the SDP3 data simulator generates vivid wireless sensing datasets in a virtual environment, the SDP3 performance predictor predicts the sensing performance based on the function regression method, and the SDP3 performance optimizer investigates the sensing and communication performance tradeoff analytically. It is shown that the simulated sensing dataset matches the experimental dataset very well in the motion recognition accuracy. Realizing edge intelligence consists of sensing, communication, training, and inference stages. Conventionally, the sensing and communication stages are executed sequentially, which results in excessive amount of dataset generation and uploading time. This paper proposes to accelerate edge intelligence via integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). As such, the sensing and communication stages are merged so as to make the best use of the wireless signals for the dual purpose of dataset generation and uploading. However, ISAC also introduces additional interference between sensing and communication functionalities. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a classification error minimization formulation to design the ISAC beamforming and time allocation. The globally optimal solution is derived via the rank-1 guaranteed semidefinite relaxation, and performance analysis is performed to quantify the ISAC gain over that of conventional edge intelligence. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed ISAC-assisted edge intelligence system. Interestingly, we find that ISAC is always beneficial, when the duration of generating a sample is more than the duration of uploading a sample. Otherwise, the ISAC gain can vanish or even be negative.
