The density of states (DOS) is fundamentally important for understanding physical processes in organic disordered semiconductors, yet hard to determine experimentally. We evaluated the DOS by considering recombination via tail states and using the temperature and open-circuit voltage ($V_\mathrm{oc}$) dependence of the ideality factor in organic solar cells. By performing Suns-$V_\mathrm{oc}$ measurements, we find that gaussian and exponential distributions describe the DOS only at a given quasi-Fermi level splitting. Current breakthroughs in natural language processing have benefited dramatically from neural language models, through which distributional semantics can leverage neural data representations to facilitate downstream applications. Since neural embeddings use context prediction on word co-occurrences to yield dense vectors, they are inevitably prone to capture more semantic association than semantic similarity. To improve vector space models in deriving semantic similarity, we post-process neural word embeddings through deep metric learning, through which we can inject lexical-semantic relations, including syn/antonymy and hypo/hypernymy, into a distributional space. We introduce hierarchy-fitting, a novel semantic specialization approach to modelling semantic similarity nuances inherently stored in the IS-A hierarchies. Hierarchy-fitting attains state-of-the-art results on the common- and rare-word benchmark datasets for deriving semantic similarity from neural word embeddings. It also incorporates an asymmetric distance function to specialize hypernymy's directionality explicitly, through which it significantly improves vanilla embeddings in multiple evaluation tasks of detecting hypernymy and directionality without negative impacts on semantic similarity judgement. The results demonstrate the efficacy of hierarchy-fitting in specializing neural embeddings with semantic relations in late fusion, potentially expanding its applicability to aggregating heterogeneous data and various knowledge resources for learning multimodal semantic spaces.

Recent advances on the Vector Space Model have significantly improved some NLP applications such as neural machine translation and natural language generation. Although word co-occurrences in context have been widely used in counting-/predicting-based distributional models, the role of syntactic dependencies in deriving distributional semantics has not yet been thoroughly investigated. By comparing various Vector Space Models in detecting synonyms in TOEFL, we systematically study the salience of syntactic dependencies in accounting for distributional similarity. We separate syntactic dependencies into different groups according to their various grammatical roles and then use context-counting to construct their corresponding raw and SVD-compressed matrices. Moreover, using the same training hyperparameters and corpora, we study typical neural embeddings in the evaluation. We further study the effectiveness of injecting human-compiled semantic knowledge into neural embeddings on computing distributional similarity. Our results show that the syntactically conditioned contexts can interpret lexical semantics better than the unconditioned ones, whereas retrofitting neural embeddings with semantic knowledge can significantly improve synonym detection.

Natural materials usually consist of isotopic mixtures, for which different isotopic ratios can lead to distinct material properties such as thermal conductivity and nucleation process. However, the knowledge of isotopic interface remains largely unexplored mainly due to the challenges in isotopic identification and property measurement at an atomic scale. Here, by using monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope, we reveal momentum-transfer-dependent lattice vibration behavior at an artificial h-10BN/h-11BN heterostructure with sub-unit-cell resolution. We find the vibrational energy changes across the isotopic interface gradually, featuring a wide transition regime, which suggests strong delocalization of the out-of-plane optical phonons at the interface. In addition, we identify phonons near the Brillouin zone center have a transition regime ~3.34 nm (10 atomic layers), whereas phonons at the Brillouin zone boundary transition in ~1.66 nm (5 atomic layers). We propose that the isotope-induced charge effect at the interface accounts for the distinct delocalization behavior. Moreover, intra-atomic layer variation of vibration energy is also sensitive to the momentum transfer, thus at the interface it depends on both of momentum transfer and mass change. The revealed lattice vibration behavior at an isotopic interface provides new insights to understand the isotopic effects on properties in natural materials.

We present a robust model predictive control method (MPC) for discrete-time linear time-delayed systems with state and control input constraints. The system is subject to both polytopic model uncertainty and additive disturbances. In the proposed method, a time-varying feedback control policy is optimized such that the robust satisfaction of all constraints for the closed-loop system is guaranteed. By encoding the effects of the delayed states and inputs into the feedback policy, we solve the robust optimal control problem in MPC using System Level Synthesis which results in a convex quadratic program that jointly conducts uncertainty over-approximation and robust controller synthesis. Notably, the number of variables in the quadratic program is independent of the delay horizon. In edge computing (EC), by offloading tasks to edge server or remote cloud, the system performance can be improved greatly. However, since the traffic distribution in EC is heterogeneous and dynamic, it is difficult for an individual edge server to provide satisfactory computation service anytime and anywhere. This issue motivated the researchers to study the cooperation between edge servers. The previous server cooperation algorithms have disadvantages since the cooperated region is limited within one-hop. However, the performance of EC can be improved further by releasing the restriction of cooperation region. Even some works have extended the cooperated region to multi-hops, they fail to support the task offloading which is one of the core issues of edge computing. Therefore, we propose a new decentralized and borderless server cooperation algorithm for edge computing which takes task offloading strategy into account, named CoNet. In CoNet, the cooperation region is not limited. Each server forms its own basic cooperation unit (BCU) and calculates its announced capability based on BCU. The server's capability, the processing delay, the task and calculation result forwarding delay are considered during the calculation. The task division strategy bases on the real capability of host-server and the announced capability of cooperation-servers. This cooperation process is recursive and will be terminated once the terminal condition is satisfied. The simulation results demonstrate the advantages of CoNet over previous works.

Continually learning new classes from a few training examples without forgetting previous old classes demands a flexible architecture with an inevitably growing portion of storage, in which new examples and classes can be incrementally stored and efficiently retrieved. One viable architectural solution is to tightly couple a stationary deep neural network to a dynamically evolving explicit memory (EM). As the centerpiece of this architecture, we propose an EM unit that leverages energy-efficient in-memory compute (IMC) cores during the course of continual learning operations. We demonstrate for the first time how the EM unit can physically superpose multiple training examples, expand to accommodate unseen classes, and perform similarity search during inference, using operations on an IMC core based on phase-change memory (PCM). Specifically, the physical superposition of a few encoded training examples is realized via in-situ progressive crystallization of PCM devices. The classification accuracy achieved on the IMC core remains within a range of 1.28%--2.5% compared to that of the state-of-the-art full-precision baseline software model on both the CIFAR-100 and miniImageNet datasets when continually learning 40 novel classes (from only five examples per class) on top of 60 old classes., Comment: Accepted at the European Solid-state Devices and Circuits Conference (ESSDERC), September 2022

The large radiative production rate for pseudoscalar mesons in the $J/\psi$ radiative decay remains elusive. We present the first lattice QCD calculation of partial decay width of $J/\psi$ radiatively decaying into $\eta_{(2)}$, the $\mathrm{SU(2)}$ flavor singlet pseudoscalar meson, which confirms QCD $\mathrm{U_A(1)}$ anomaly enhancement to the coupling of gluons with flavor singlet pseudoscalar mesons. The lattice simulation is carried out using $N_f=2$ lattice QCD gauge configurations at the pion mass $m_{\pi} \approx 350$ MeV. In particular, the distillation method has been utilized to calculate light quark loops. The results are reported here with the mass $m_{\eta_{(2)}}= 718(8)$ MeV and the decay width $\Gamma(J/\psi\to\gamma \eta_{(2)})=0.385(45)$ keV. By assuming the dominance of $\mathrm{U_A(1)}$ anomaly and flavor singlet-octet mixing angle $\theta=-24.5^\circ$, the production rates for the physical $\eta$ and $\eta'$ in $J/\psi$ radiative decay are predicted to be $1.15(14)\times 10^{-3}$ and $4.49(53)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively, which agree well with the experimental measurement data. The nanoscale lattice imperfections, such as dislocations, have a significant impact on the thermal transport properties in non-metallic materials. Understanding such effects requires the knowledge of defect phonon modes, which however is largely unexplored in experiments due to the challenge in characterization of phonons for the atomic-sized defects. Here, at the atomic scale we directly measure the localized phonon modes of dislocations at a Si/Ge interface using scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy loss spectroscopy. We find that the dislocation induces new phonon modes localized within ~2-unit cells of the core, which experience a redshift of several milli-electron-volts compared to the dislocation-free case. The observed spectral features agree well with simulations. These localized modes are expected to reduce the phonon transmission channels across the defect and thus the local thermal conductivity. The revealed phonon modes localized at dislocations may help us to improve the thermal properties in thermoelectric generators and thermal management systems with proper defect engineering.

In this study, a probability density-based approach for constructing trajectories is proposed and validated through an typical use-case application: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) prediction given origin-destination pairs. The ETA prediction is based on physics and mathematical laws given by the extracted information of probability density-based trajectories constructed. The overall ETA prediction errors are about 0.106 days (i.e. 2.544 hours) on average with 0.549 days (i.e. 13.176 hours) standard deviation, and the proposed approach has an accuracy of 92.08% with 0.959 R-Squared value for overall trajectories between Singapore and Australia ports selected.

In this study, a novel coordinative scheduling optimization approach is proposed to enhance port efficiency by reducing weighted average turnaround time. The proposed approach is developed as a heuristic algorithm applied and investigated through different observation windows with weekly rolling horizon paradigm method. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective and promising on mitigating the turnaround time of vessels. The results demonstrate that largest potential savings of turnaround time (weighted average) are around 17 hours (28%) reduction on baseline of 1-week observation, 45 hours (37%) reduction on baseline of 2-week observation and 70 hours (40%) reduction on baseline of 3-week observation. Even though the experimental results are based on historical datasets, the results potentially present significant benefits if real-time applications were applied under a quadratic computational complexity.
