Although animal models with ovalbumin have been used to study chronic asthma, there are difficulties in inducing recurrence as well as in maintaining chronic inflammation in this system. Using a murine model of house dust mite (HDM)-induced bronchial asthma, we examined the airway remodeling process in response to the chronic exposure to HDM. During the seventh and twelfth weeks of study, HDM were inhaled through the nose for three consecutive days and airway responsiveness was measured. Twenty-four hours later, bronchoalveolar lavage and histological examination were performed. The degree of overproduction of mucus, subepithelial fibrosis, and the thickness of the peribronchial smooth muscle in the experimental group was clearly increased compared to the control group. In addition, HDM-exposed mice demonstrated severe airway hyperreactivity to methacholine. In the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, the number of total cells and eosinophils was increased; during the twelfth week, the number of neutrophils increased in the experimental group. With regard to changes in cytokines, the concentrations of IL-4, IL- 13, and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) were increased in the experimental group. The data suggest that eosinophils, IL-4, IL-13, and TGF-beta might play an important role in the airway remodeling process and that neutrophils may be involved with increased exposure time.

During the course of establishing an animal model of chronic asthma, we tried to elucidate the time sequence of airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), airway inflammation, airway remodeling, and associated cytokines. Seven-week-old female BALB/c mice were studied as a chronic asthma model using ovalbumin (OVA). After sensitization, mice were exposed twice weekly to aerosolized OVA, and were divided into three groups depending on the duration of 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks. At each time point, airway responsiveness, inflammatory cells, cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF), serum OVA-specific IgE, IgG1, IgG2a, and histological examination were carried out. AHR to methacholine, increased levels of OVA-specific IgG1 and IgG2a, and goblet cell hyperplasia were continuously sustained at each time point of weeks. In contrast, we observed a time-dependent decrease in serum OVA-specific IgE, BALF eosinophils, BALF cytokines such as IL-13, transforming growth factor-beta1, and a time-dependent increase in BALF promatrix metalloproteinase-9 and peribronchial fibrosis. In this OVA-induced chronic asthma model, we observed airway remodelings as well as various cytokines and inflammatory cells being involved in different time-dependent manners. However, increased airway fibrosis did not directly correlate with a further increase in airway hyperresponsiveness.

Therapeutic modalities of airway remodeling in asthma have proved to be unsuccessful regarding reversing the previously established chronic airway changes. Recently, the potential of plasmid DNA to inhibit the Th2 immune response has been demonstrated in animal models of asthma. Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunization also induced immunomodulation, which appeared to be reliant on the properties of the interferon-gamma that was produced. Mice were immunized with house dust mite extract (HDM). At the 3 week point, we injected BCG subcutaneously into mice on three successive weeks. One week after the BCG injection, we immunized mice with the DNA plasmid encoding for murine T-cell epitope on Dermatophagoide pteronyssinus 2 thrice weekly. At 9 weeks after immunization, we measured airway responsiveness. Twenty four hours later, we performed bronchoalveolar lavage and histological examinations. Co-administration of DNA vaccination and BCG resulted in a partial suppression of the overproduction of goblet cells and the thickness of the peribronchial smooth muscle in ongoing allergic responses. In the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, the number of total cells and eosinophils was reduced, and regarding the change of cytokines, the concentration of IL-4 was also decreased, but interferon-gamma was increased in the co-administration group, opposed to the asthma group. These results suggest that co-administration of vaccination with the DNA encoding T-cell epitope and BCG are effective regarding ongoing allergic response and might constitute an ideal method for combating allergic disease in the future.

Nasal packing is routinely performed by many surgeons following nasal surgery and is also frequently used for the treatment of epistaxis. The use of nasal packing, however, is sometimes associated with serious complications such as aspiration, bowel perforation, obstructive apnea, and hypoxia. This author has also once had the experience of losing a nasal pack during a procedure performed on a mentally impaired patient. If a nasal pack could be easily tracked by x-ray, treatment would be faster and easier. We now use x-ray indicators quilted into our nasal packs, which enable us to find the packs quickly and easily with plain x-ray film.

Background: Vaccination with naked DNA encoding antigen induces cellular and humoral immunity characterized by the activation of specific Th1 cells., Objective: To evaluate the effects of vaccination with mixed naked DNA plasmids encoding Der p 1, Der p 2, Der p 3, Der f 1, Der f 2, and Der f 3, the major house dust mite allergens on the allergic inflammation to the whole house dust mites (HDM) crude extract., Methods: Three hundred micrograms of these gene mixtures were injected into muscle of BALB/c mice. Control mice were injected with the pcDNA 3.1 blank vector. After 3 weeks, the mice were actively sensitized and inhaled with the whole house dust mite extract intranasally., Results: The vaccinated mice showed a significantly decreased synthesis of total and HDM-specific IgE compared with controls. Analysis of the cytokine profile of lymphocytes after challenge with HDM crude extract revealed that mRNA expression of interferon-gamma was higher in the vaccinated mice than in the controls. Reduced infiltration of inflammatory cells and the prominent infiltration of CD8+ T cells were observed in histology of lung tissue from the vaccinated mice., Conclusion: Vaccination with DNA encoding the major house dust mite allergens provides a promising approach for treating allergic responses to whole house dust mite allergens.

Intradermal gene administration was found to induce a more profound immune response than direct intramuscular gene injection. We performed intradermal vaccination of B10.PL mice with DNA encoding for the V 8.2 region of the T-cell receptors (TCR). Three weeks later, these mice were immunized with rat myelin basic protein (MBP). Daily mean clinical scores and mortality rate were lower in this group compared with controls. The proliferative responses of lymph node cells to rat MBP were slightly less in the vaccination groups than in the control groups (p < 0.05). However, we detected no differences between the two groups with regard to the production of MBP-specific IgG, IgG1, & IgG2a antibodies. The levels of cytokine mRNA expression in the vaccination groups were observed higher than in the control groups without antigen-specific stimulation, but all of cytokine expressions between the vaccination and control groups after antigen-specific stimulation were identical. These results demonstrate that intradermal DNA vaccines encoding for TCR might prove to be useful in the control of autoimmune disease.

Cholesterol homeostasis is tightly controlled process that involves a variety of regulators including liver X receptors (LXR). Agonists of LXR are expected to increase cholesterol efflux, lower LDL, and raise HDL levels. Screening of a natural product library of microbial extracts using a LXR-scintillation proximity assay (SPA) binding assay and bioassay-guided fractionation of a number of fungal extracts led to the isolation of five ergostane and a cycloartane derivative. These compounds exhibited IC50 value ranging 0.5 approximately 9 microM in the binding assay for a-receptor and a number of these showed in vitro agonist activity in the coactivator association assays but lacked the cell based LXR activation. The isolation and LXR activity of these compounds are described.

The apparent complexity of allergen-specific T-cell response in terms of epitope usage in humans is a potential barrier to peptide-based immunotherapy for allergy. A knowledge of cross-reacting T-cell epitopes of common allergens might have an impact on the development of vaccines for immunotherapy. We examined the efficiency of vaccinating with plasmid DNA coding only human T-cell epitopes on the suppression of allergic reactions in mice. BALB/c mice that received an injection of mixed naked DNA plasmids encoding the five classes of human T-cell epitopes on Der p 1 and Der p 2 produced a significant reduction in total and Der p-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) synthesis. In Der p specific-IgG2a antibody responses, vaccinated mice showed more prominent responses than controls. Higher levels of interferon-gamma, a Th1 cytokine associated with the suppression of IgE production, were found in the sera of vaccinated mice. Histologic studies showed a marked reduction in the infiltration of inflammatory cells in the lung tissues of vaccinated mice vs. controls. These results suggest that vaccination with DNA encoding human T-cell epitopes effectively inhibits allergic responses in mice and might induce cross-regulation on helper T-cell level in vivo.

In the present study, the signs of airflow obstruction on inspiratory and expiratory CT scans in 45 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were investigated. Radiologic findings were evaluated and correlated with the clinical data, which included rheumatoid factors and pulmonary function tests results. A lung biopsy was performed in five patients. The pattern of CT findings was as follows: infiltrative (n=15), obstructive (n=12), mixed (infiltrative and obstructive; n=10), other complicating diseases (n=7), and normal (n=1). The rheumatologic factor between patients with bronchial wall thickenings and patients without thickenings was significantly different (p=0.009). The forced expiratory flow rate between 25% and 75% of the vital capacity (FEF(25-75%)) was significantly more reduced in patients with interlobular septal thickenings than in patients without these thickenings. The patients with mosaic attenuation had significantly lower mean values of FEF(25-75% ) (p=0.001) and a lower peak expiratory flow (p=0.003) than patients without mosaic attenuation. On expiratory scans, the mean air-trapping score was 21%. These air-trapping scores were found to be well correlated with FEV1/FVC (r=0.230, p=0.0452), and FEF25-75% (r=-0.63, p= 0.05). It is widely known that a relatively higher percentage of mosaic attenuation with air-trapping and a good correlation between these and functional values contribute to the detection of early airway obstruction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and even in patients with infiltrative lung disease only.

Patients undergoing endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair have lower perioperative morbidity and leave the hospital earlier than patients undergoing open repair. However, potential complications require continuous surveillance of endografts and there are few data regarding their long-term fate. If an open operation were well tolerated, this might be a preferable alternative. The purpose of this study was to identify patients with lower morbidity and shorter hospital stay following open AAA repair and to analyze factors that might point to open repair as the preferred approach. We performed a retrospective review of all patients who underwent AAA repair between 1995 and 2000 at our institution. All patients with ruptured aneurysms and those that required renal, celiac, or superior mesenteric reconstructions during the AAA repair were excluded. Patient demographics, preoperative comorbid conditions, intraoperative data, and postoperative complications were analyzed in detail. A total of 115 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. There was only one perioperative death (0.9%). The mean hospital stay was 8.1 days. A history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and longer operative time were independent factors associated with prolonged hospital stay. Forty-one patients (35.6%) left the hospital in 5 or less days. Compared to the group with hospital stay >5 days, these patients had a lower incidence of COPD (7.3% vs. 25.7%, p < 0.05) and smaller-size AAAs (5.6 vs. 6.4 cm, p < 0.0001), and were more often operated on via a retroperitoneal approach (61% vs. 40.5%, p < 0.05). Their time in the operating room was less (3.5 vs. 4.5 hr, p < 0.0001), and they had less estimated blood loss (750 vs. 1500 cc, p < 0.001) and fewer transfusions (0.95 vs. 2.45 units, p < 0.0001). Patients without COPD and smaller AAAs that can be repaired via a retroperitoneal approach have a lower incidence of perioperative complications and a shorter hospital stay following open AAA repair. Until long-term results for endografts are available, our data suggest that these patients are well served with an open repair.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the effect of Taping therapy on Range of Motion, pain, and depression in stroke patients in the home without complete recovery as a means of nursing intervention., Method: Twenty seven subjects out of fifty four people who were attending in the stroke self-help group in one community health center in S city were asked to participate in this Quai-experimental study. The Taping therapy was a method that stick to the illness area and the point of pressure pain, the elastic and cross tape without medicine treatment with domestic products. Nursing intervention was independently completed by researcher once a week over two period of 12 weeks from September 2001 to March 2002 year. Data were analyzed using the SPSS win. The homogeneity between the experimental group and control group was test by chi2 and t-test. The difference of experimental before and after were tested by the unpaired t-test., Result: The shoulder joint flexion and abduction, the elbow joint flexion and extension, the hip joint flexion, and the flexion of knee joint in the ROM of the experimental group were significantly improved over those of the control group. In difference of pain, rest and painful movement, the experimental group were significantly decreased over those of the control group. The difference of depression in experimental before and after was significantly decreased in the experimental group over those of the control group., Conclusion: The Taping therapy intervention proved effect pain relief and depression decrease as well as promote of range of motion.

An easy method of measurement of the zeta potentials of sub-50-nm polymeric nanoparticles is suggested. Although zeta potential measurements of nanoparticles or emulsions above 50 nm have been successfully carried out, zeta potentials of emulsions or nanoparticles below 50 nm could not be precisely measured in the region of extremely low conductivity by conventional electrophoresis with a He-Ne laser. However, zeta potentials of sub-50-nm nanoparticles were measured in the region of thin electrical double layers by addition of sodium chloride and zeta potentials in the condition without sodium chloride could be predicted by extrapolation of the measured potentials. The electrophoretic mobility of 150-nm nanoparticles stabilized with sodium dodecylsulfate was the same as that calculated from extrapolation of the measured ones. The zeta potentials of sub-50-nm nanoparticles stabilized with sodium dodecylsulfate could be calculated by the same procedure.

Airway hyperresponsiveness in asthmatics, which may result from inflammation or remodeling, is expressed as the concentration of methacholine that causes a 20% fall in FEV1 in the concentration-response curve (PC20). A decrease in PC20 may be due to a steeper curve (hyperreactivity) and/or a curve shift to the left (hypersensitivity). Our purpose was to analyze the relation of airway sensitivity and reactivity to airway pathological changes. The PC6, as sensitivity parameter, and the slope between PC20 and PC40 as reactivity parameter, were calculated. Total and differential cell counts in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and percentage of epithelial shedding, basement membrane thickness, and submucosal thickness on bronchial biopsy, were measured. The PC6 showed a correlation with the baseline FEV1%. The slope was significantly correlated with the basement membrane thickness, and also demonstrated a strong association with submucosal thickness. The PC20 showed a correlation with the baseline FEV1% and the degree of epithelial shedding. These results suggest that the airway sensitivity and reactivity measurements reflect the degree of airway caliber and remodeling, respectively.

Autoimmune ear disease induced by type II collagen has been investigated by Yoo et al. In the present study, we investigated the effects of direct chronic infusion of type II collagen-specific monoclonal antibodies into guinea pig cochlea. Type II collagen fragment CB11 peptide-specific monoclonal antibodies (anti-CB11 Mabs) were infused directly into the scala tympani of guinea pigs with an Alzet mini-osmotic pump (anti-CB11 Mab group). As a control, normal mouse serum was infused by the same method (control group). To evaluate the auditory function, we recorded brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs). In the anti-CB11 Mab group, 80% of the animals showed an increased hearing threshold of more than 25 dB at 7 days after infusion. The hearing threshold shift observed in the guinea pigs of the control group was minimal (15 dB or less). To detect the structural changes, we performed histopathologic studies using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Inflammatory cell migration was detected mainly in the scala tympani of the guinea pigs of both groups. In the anti-CB11 Mab group, endolymphatic hydrops was also observed. The results of this experiment suggest that type II collagen autoimmunity is responsible for the production of hearing loss and endolymphatic hydrops.

A 20-year-old man with rapid refractory pulmonary infiltrates, fever, and chill was admitted to our hospital. Microscopic examination showed focal necrosis of the lung tissue, arterial thromboembolism, and alveolar hemorrhage. He tested positive for anticardiolipin IgG antibodies. Because of the absence of underlying diseases, the possibility of secondary antiphospholipid antibody syndrome was excluded. Follow-up chest CT after 2 years revealed pulmonary arterial aneurysms with diffuse ground-glass opacities. The aneurysms were occluded by coil embolization.

Ultrasound (US)-guided cannulation of the internal jugular vein (IJV) has become the preferred approach for venous access as a result of its higher success rate and lower incidence of complications. This report describes a case of thoracic duct injury during US-guided left IJV catheterization. The normal and variant anatomy of the thoracic duct in the neck is illustrated.

Molecules considered as autoantigens in autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss and Meniere's diseases are type II collagens, type IX collagens, 30 kD proteins of inner ear membranes, laminin, 68 kD proteins of inner ear, PO protein, Raf I protein and beta-tubulin are reviewed in relation to molecular mechanisms of autoimmune injury of inner ear resulting in hearing loss.

Background: Immunization with naked plasmid DNA leads to strong and persistent cell-mediated and humoral immune response to plasmid encoded antigen. Vaccination of DNA encoded whole allergen has been tried, but little information is currently available on the efficacy of DNA encoding T-cell epitopes in allergic disease. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the vaccination of naked plasmid DNA encoding only T-cell epitopes suppresses the allergic reaction as effectively as naked DNA encoding whole segments of allergen., Methods: We immunized mice with a mixed naked plasmid DNA encoding the five classes of murine T-cell epitopes on Der p 1 and Der p 2 three times at weekly intervals via an intramuscular injection of BALB/c mice. Control mice were injected with the pcDNA 3.1 blank vector. After 3 weeks, the mice were actively sensitized twice and allowed to inhale the Der p extracts intranasally six times at weekly intervals., Results: The vaccinated mice showed a significant attenuated induction of Der p-specific immunoglobulin E synthesis compared to controls. In terms of the Der p-specific IgG2a antibody response, the vaccinated mice showed more prominent responses than the control mice group. In addition, analysis of the cytokine profile after Der p stimulation of the lymph-node cells revealed that the level of the mRNA expression of the interferon-gamma gene was higher in the vaccinated mice than in the controls. Histologic studies showed a much reduced infiltration of inflammatory cells in lung tissue of the gene-vaccinated mice in comparison with the controls., Conclusions: These results suggest that vaccination with DNA encoding T-cell epitopes effectively inhibits allergen-induced IgE synthesis and reduces cell infiltration in lung tissue. Thus, gene therapy using T-cell epitope-encoding DNA presents an ideal way of combating allergic disease in the future.

B10.RIII (H-2r) mice were orally administered cyanogen bromide peptide 11 (CB11) or cholera toxin B (CTB)-conjugated CB11 to induce tolerance in collagen-induced autoimmune ear disease. Oral administration of a high dosage of CB11 provided partial protection from chondritis. However, administration of a tiny amount of CTB-CB11 conjugate effectively suppressed chondritis. Oral administration of CTB-CB11 conjugate did not alter the stimulation of T cells in vitro or the fine specificities of B cells. The oral administration of CTB-CB11 caused a higher level of type II collagen-specific IgG and its subclass. Interestingly, increases of TH1 cytokine (interferon-gamma) in Peyer's patches and of TH1/TH2 cytokines (interleukin-2 and interleukin-4) in lymph nodes were detected in mice that had been fed CTB-CB11. An increase of CD8+ T cells in the Peyer's patches with a decrease of CD8+ T cells in lymph nodes was seen in mice that had been fed CTB-CB11. These results suggest that protection from chondritis by oral administration of minute amounts of CTB-CB11 conjugate can be achieved by a mechanism distinct from that of conventional oral tolerance induction.

Background: The activation of T cells and the elevation of Th2-type cytokines have been observed in asthmatic patients, but the relative role of CD4 and CD8 T cell is still unclear., Objective: To investigate the role of T cell subset in patients with acute asthma attacks, we analyzed the distribution, activation status, and cytokine production of CD4 and CD8 cells., Methods: The percentages of the CD4 and CD8 cell in peripheral blood (PB) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid were analyzed by flow cytometry. The cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, and IFN-gamma) and soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R) were measured by ELISA in culture supernatants of CD4 and CD8 cells purified from PB., Results: The CD4/CD8 ratio in PB of asthmatic patients was significantly higher than that of controls, which was significantly reduced after treatment. In contrast, there was a tendency to high percentage of CD8 cells in asthmatic patients as compared with controls in BAL, which resulted in a decreased CD4/CD8 ratio. Comparing the T cell subsets in BAL with paired PB in asthma, the CD4 cells were higher in PB, but CD8 cells were higher in BAL. The IL-4, IL-5, and sIL-2R produced by CD4 cells were significantly higher than those produced by CD8 cells in asthmatic patients., Conclusions: Our results provide evidence that activated CD4 T cells increase and produce type 2 cytokines in PB, but CD8 T cell are more sequestrated than CD4 T cells in the airway during an acute asthma attack.

We examined the sera of patients with Meniere's disease for the presence of antibodies against 8 inner ear antigens by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). One hundred eight patients with Meniere's disease and 28 control subjects were studied. The antibodies against chicken type II collagen, bovine type II collagen, the cyanogen bromide cleaved peptide 11 (CB11) of each, type IX and XI collagens, C-Raf, and tubulin were measured by ELISA. The sensitivity of each antigen was between 37% and 60% individually, and was 91% when all 8 inner ear antigens were combined. These results showed that 91% of Meniere's disease sera have antibody activities to 1 or more of these inner ear antigens. The results suggest that performing ELISA for these 8 inner ear antigens was useful as a diagnostic tool for Meniere's disease. Further study is required for elucidating the role of these antigens in the pathogenesis of Meniere's disease, which might eventually result in better therapy.

To analysis the difference between systemic and local pleural T cell response in pulmonary tuberculosis, we analyzed interferon (IFN)-gamma and soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) culture supernatants and in pleural effusion (PE). We also investigated the association of pleural INF-gamma and sIL-2R levels with development of residual pleural thickening (RPT). The subjects in this study included patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis with or without PE (n = 46), those with nontuberculous PE (n = 32), and healthy tuberculin reactors (n = 20). Measurement of IFN-gamma and sIL-2R were made by ELISA. In pulmonary tuberculosis, IFN-gamma and sIL-2R concentrations in PBMC culture supernatants were lower than those of healthy tuberculin reactors (IFN-gamma; 258.4 +/-111.5 pg/mL versus 2792.5 +/-633.2 pg/mL, sIL-2R; 1465.0 +/-144.4 pg/mL versus 4777.1 +/-178.5 pg/mL, p < 0.05), whereas IFN-gamma and sIL-2R concentrations in PE were higher than those from nontuberculous pleural effusion (IFN-gamma; 1154.4 +/-252.4 pg/mL versus 292.0 +/-68.9 pg/mL, sIL-2R; 9805.2 +/-978.9 pg/mL versus 3426.7 +/-695.6 g/mL, p < 0.05). IFN-gamma and sIL-2R in PBMC culture supernatants were significantly lower in tuberculat patients with PE than those without PE, and the patients with a high value of IFN-gamma or sIL-2R in PE showed a low value of IFN-gamma or sIL-2R in PBMC culture supernatant, respectively. Patients with RPT had significantly higher IFN-gamma and sIL-2R values in their PE compared with those without RPT. These findings suggest that diminished systemic Th1 response in tuberculosis results from the accumulation of activated Th1 cell to the disease site, and that levels of IFN-gamma and sIL-2R in PE are useful posttreatment markers of RPT.

The 28 kd protein extracted from the guinea pig inner ear membranous fraction, which reacted with sera from patients with Meniere's disease, has been subjected to microsequencing. Nineteen amino acids were obtained (IVQQFGFQRRASDDGKLTQ). A protein data bank search showed that this sequence corresponded to residues 41 to 60 of human Raf-1 protein. Sera from 16 of 27 patients with Meniere's disease showed reactivity to the recombinant purified glutathione-S-transferase-Raf-1 protein. These results support the hypothesis that a subgroup of patients who suffer from Meniere's disease, as well as some other kinds of autoimmune inner ear diseases, have an autoantibody against Raf-1 protein.

The aim of this study was to determine whether solitary pulmonary tuberculoma and malignant tumor can be differentiated on the basis of magnetic resonance (MR) signal intensity. Twenty-eight patients with solitary pulmonary lesions were prospectively studied with MR imaging: T1-weighted, enhanced T1-weighted, proton density-weighted, and T2-weighted spin echo images were obtained. The confirmation methods used were computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy in seven patients with lung cancer and four patients with tuberculosis; surgery in ten patients with lung cancer and five patients with tuberculosis; and laboratory data in two patients with tuberculosis. Morphologic features and MR signal intensity were examined in detail. As the test for detection of tuberculoma, signal difference on T2-weighted images was carefully analyzed. The signal intensity ratio of the nodule to thoracic muscle signal intensity was measured. The signal intensities obtained from the lung cancers and tuberculomas were variable on pre-and post-enhanced T1-weighted images and proton density-weighted images. Masses were hypointense in 2 of 17 patients with lung cancer and in 9 of 11 patients with tuberculoma on T2-weighted images (sensitivity 82%, specificity 89%, accuracy 87%). The mean signal intensity ratios of the tuberculomas to muscle were significantly lower than those of malignant tumors on T1-weighted, enhanced T1-weighted, proton density-weighted, and T2-weighted images (P < 0.0001). After gadolinium-DTPA enhancement, 2 malignant tumors and 7 tuberculomas showed a marginal rim enhancement pattern, whereas 15 malignant tumors and 2 tuberculomas revealed a diffuse enhancement. The results of MR imaging were consistent with those of CT in 84% of the patients.
