Abstract

3D graphene nanoribbons were synthesized on surfaces for local chemistry conducted with scanning probe microscopy., Recent advances in state-of-the-art probe microscopy allow us to conduct single molecular chemistry via tip-induced reactions and direct imaging of the inner structure of the products. Here, we synthesize three-dimensional graphene nanoribbons by on-surface chemical reaction and take advantage of tip-induced assembly to demonstrate their capability as a playground for local probe chemistry. We show that the radical caused by tip-induced debromination can be reversibly terminated by either a bromine atom or a fullerene molecule. The experimental results combined with theoretical calculations pave the way for sequential reactions, particularly addition reactions, by a local probe at the single-molecule level decoupled from the surface.

Abstract

The static second hyperpolarizabilities ([gamma]) of the singlet diradical systems with intermediate diradical character involving phenalenyl radicals connected by acetylene and vinylene [pi]-conjugated linkers were investigated. The results provided the possibility of developing a novel control scheme of [gamma] for phenalenyl radical systems involving [pi]-conjugated linkers.

264. Seasonal Fluctuation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Aerosol Genotoxicity in Long-Range Transported Air Mass Observed at the Western End of Japan

Abstract

In order to clarify the level transboundary air pollution caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and genotoxic substances, aerosols were collected from forest and suburban sites in Nagasaki, west Japan, for 6 years. The PAH concentration was measured, and the genotoxicity of the substances were evaluated using the umu test. The results showed no notable trends in the concentration or toxicity of either sites throughout the study period. The suburban and forest sites shared similar seasonal fluctuation patterns and quantitative values, suggesting that the western end of Japan might be affected by long-range transported pollutants, especially in winter. PAH concentration and genotoxicity showed the same seasonal patterns of increased levels in winter and lower levels in summer. This suggests that PAHs and genotoxic substances were correlated and share common sources. Back trajectory and source analyses were conducted using the diagnostic ratios of PAHs. It was predicted that air pollution by PAHs at the forest site arise predominantly as a result of biomass or coal combustion in continental regions, such as northern parts of China and the Korean Peninsula. This is particularly expected in winter. Therefore, genotoxic substances would also be strongly influenced by transboundary pollution from the continental region. Abstract

Objectives The authors sought to clarify how intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography affect percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with current-generation drug-eluting stents in a pre-specified substudy of the OPINION (OPtical frequency domain imaging versus INtravascular ultrasound in percutaneous coronary interventiON) trial, a multicenter, prospective, randomized, noninferiority trial comparing optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI)-guided PCI with IVUS-guided PCI. Background The impact of these 2 imaging modalities in guiding PCI remains unknown. Methods Of 829 patients enrolled in the OPINION trial, 106 were included in the present imaging substudy. Their PCI was guided by either IVUS or OFDI, but all patients were imaged by both modalities after PCI and by OFDI at 8 months. Angiographic, OFDI, and IVUS images were analyzed by independent core laboratories, and statistical analysis was done independently by a dedicated institution. Results A total of 103 patients underwent either OFDI-guided (n = 54) or IVUS-guided (n = 49) PCI. Immediately after PCI, OFDI-guided PCI was associated with a smaller trend of minimum stent area (5.28 ± 1.65 mm(2) vs. 6.12 ± 2.34 mm(2); p = 0.088), fewer proximal stent-edge hematomas (p = 0.04), and fewer irregular protrusions (p = 0.014) than IVUS-guided PCI. At 8 months, the neointima area tended to be smaller in the OFDI-guided PCI group than in the IVUS-guided PCI group (0.56 ± 0.30 mm(2) vs. 0.80 ± 0.65 mm(2); p = 0.057), although the percentage of uncovered struts was significantly higher in the OFDI-guided PCI group than in the IVUS-guided PCI group (6.97 ± 7.03% vs. 4.67 ± 6.43%; p = 0.039). The minimum lumen area was comparable in both groups (p = 0.18). Conclusions There were several differences in local findings between OFDI- and IVUS-guided PCI as expected given the different protocols for stent sizing in the 2 groups. The minimum lumen area at the 8-month follow-up was comparable, suggesting that OFDI- and IVUS-guided PCI are similarly feasible using the current-generation drug-eluting stents. Abstract

New proton and electron donors, M(super II)(HL)2 (M = Ni, Pd, Pt; L= 5,6-diethylpyradzinedithiolate), as well as a proton and electron acceptor, Pt(super IV)(L)2 is prepared and characterized. Findings show that the pH-dependent cyclic voltammetry of the M(super II)(HL)2 complexes showed a favorable Gibbs free energy (K(sub com) > 1) for the proton and electron transfer reactions from M(super II)(HL)2 to M(super IV)(L2).

296. Synthesis, Properties, and Intermolecular Interactions in the Solid States of π-Congested X-Shaped 1,2,4,5-Tetra(9-anthryl)benzenes

Abstract

A Negishi coupling based synthesis of 1,2,4,5-tetra(9-anthryl)benzene derivatives, possessing X-shaped molecular structures, is described. The results of X-ray crystallographic analysis show that two-dimensional highly ordered packing structure of the crystalline state of the unsubstituted derivative is a consequence of intermolecular π-π and CH-π interactions between anthracene units. Photoirradiation of the unsubstituted derivative as a precipitated solution promotes intramolecular [4+4] photocycloaddition reactions between both adjacent pairs of anthracene units to produce a crystalline polycyclic product having a unique 1.700 Å long carbon-carbon single bond. Furthermore, charge-transfer complexes, displaying near-infrared absorption and emission, are generated by co-crystallization of the X-shaped unsubstituted member of the group with electron-acceptor molecules.π-Congested X-shaped 1,2,4,5-tetra(9-anthryl)benzenes were prepared. In the crystalline state, the unsubstituted derivative forms a 2D packing structure comprised of the X-shaped molecules. The product generated by intramolecular photocycloaddition of both Ant-Ant pairs possesses a very long C-C single bond of over 1.700 Å. Co-crystallization with acceptor molecules generates unique crystalline CT complexes that display NIR absorption and exciplex emission.

297. Co-expression of ERG and CD31 in a subset of CIC-rearranged sarcoma: a potential diagnostic pitfall

Abstract

CIC-rearranged sarcoma is characterized by round cell undifferentiated histology, frequent expression of ETV4 and WT1, and aggressive behavior. A clinical encounter of a case with CIC-DUX4fusion and ERG/CD31 co-expression prompted us to systematically investigate ERG and CD31 expression status in 30 archival cases of CIC-rearranged sarcoma. Half (15) of them showed moderate or strong ERG expression in <5–100% of tumor cells, among which nine showed heterogeneous membranous CD31 reactivity, including four cases each showing diffuse or strong expression. None of them showed uniformly strong and diffuse ERG/CD31 co-expression; however, three cases were initially interpreted and treated as angiosarcoma without response. Except for smaller superficial tumor enrichment, the clinicopathological characteristics of these nine cases of ERG+/CD31+ CIC-rearranged sarcoma did not differ from those of remaining 21 cases. Five showed focal hemorrhagic clefts/cysts, mimicking vascular spaces. All tumors expressed ETV4 and/or nuclear WT1, and fusion to DUX4was confirmed in seven cases. Four tumors examined by next-generation sequencing harbored no CICmissense mutations. Using DNA methylation profiling, one CD31+ CIC-rearranged sarcoma was clustered with CD31− CIC-rearranged sarcomas, but distant from angiosarcomas. When compared with epithelioid angiosarcomas lacking CICrearrangements, ERG+/CD31+ CIC-rearranged sarcomas were distinguished by focal myxoid change and the entire lack of vasoformative architecture. The angiosarcomas were characterized by uniform strong expression of ERG and CD31, but none of them were found positive for ETV4 or nuclear WT1. Heterogeneous ERG/CD31 co-expression in a subset of CIC-rearranged sarcoma is a clinically relevant pitfall for angiosarcoma, as these two diseases are treated differently.

Abstract

Since optical coherence tomography (OCT) was first performed in humans two decades ago, this imaging modality has been widely adopted in research on coronary atherosclerosis and adopted clinically for the optimization of percutaneous coronary intervention. In the past 10 years, substantial advances have been made in the understanding of in vivo vascular biology using OCT. Identification by OCT of culprit plaque pathology could potentially lead to a major shift in the management of patients with acute coronary syndromes. Detection by OCT of healed coronary plaque has been important in our understanding of the mechanisms involved in plaque destabilization and healing with the rapid progression of atherosclerosis. Accurate detection by OCT of sequelae from percutaneous coronary interventions that might be missed by angiography could improve clinical outcomes. In addition, OCT has become an essential diagnostic modality for myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries. Insight into neoatherosclerosis from OCT could improve our understanding of the mechanisms of very late stent thrombosis. The appropriate use of OCT depends on accurate interpretation and understanding of the clinical significance of OCT findings. In this Review, we summarize the state of the art in cardiac OCT and facilitate the uniform use of this modality in coronary atherosclerosis. Contributions have been made by clinicians and investigators worldwide with extensive experience in OCT, with the aim that this document will serve as a standard reference for future research and clinical application.

Abstract

The introduction of linear alkoxy chains into bianthrone promoted the aggregation of the minor twisted conformer and made it compete with the major folded conformer in the solid‐state. Rapid evaporation approach to the methoxy‐ and n‐butoxy‐substituted derivatives provided powder mixtures of folded and twisted conformers as metastable solids. Upon heating the powders, different lengths of alkyl chains converged to different conformers via solid‐state isomerization reaction with an apparent color change. Monitoring by FT‐IR spectroscopy and powder XRD ensured that these isomerization reactions involve only conformational isomerization without pyrolysis. In addition, single crystal X‐ray structure analysis revealed that twisted conformers with longer alkyl chains are stabilized in the solid‐state by the synergistic effect of their inter‐chain hydrophobic interactions and π‐π stacking interactions.
