While the relationship between circulating osteoprotegerin (OPG) and cardiovascular events is well-established in the general population, its association with cardiovascular risks in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients remains less robust. This study hypothesized that elevated circulating OPG levels might be associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in CKD patients, a total of 2,109 patients with CKD stages 1 through pre-dialysis 5 from the KNOW-CKD cohort were categorized into quartiles based on serum OPG levels. The primary outcome of the study was 3-point MACE, defined as a composite of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or cardiac death. The median follow-up duration was 7.9 years. The cumulative incidence of 3-point MACE significantly varied across serum OPG levels in Kaplan-Meier curve analysis (P < 0.001, log-rank test), with the highest incidence observed in the 4th quartile. Cox regression analysis indicated that, relative to the 1st quartile, the risk of 3-point MACE was significantly higher in the 3rd (adjusted hazard ratio 2.901, 95% confidence interval 1.009 to 8.341) and the 4th quartiles (adjusted hazard ratio 4.347, 95% confidence interval 1.410 to 13.395). Adipose tissue within the tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a critical role in supporting breast cancer progression. In this study, we identified FAM3 metabolism-regulating signaling molecule C (FAM3C) produced by cancer-associated adipocytes (CAA) as a key regulator of tumor progression. FAM3C overexpression in cultured adipocytes significantly reduced cell death in both adipocytes and cocultured breast cancer cells while suppressing markers of fibrosis. Conversely, FAM3C depletion in CAAs resulted in adipocyte-mesenchymal transition (AMT) and increased fibrosis within the TME. Adipocyte FAM3C expression was driven by TGFβ signaling from breast cancer cells and was reduced upon treatment with a TGFβ-neutralizing antibody. FAM3C knockdown in CAAs early in tumorigenesis in a genetically engineered mouse model of breast cancer significantly inhibited primary and metastatic tumor growth. Circulating FAM3C levels were elevated in patients with metastatic breast cancer compared with those with nonmetastatic breast cancer. These results suggest that therapeutic inhibition of FAM3C expression levels in CAAs during early tumor development could be a promising approach in the treatment of patients with breast cancer., Significance: High FAM3C levels in cancer-associated adipocytes contribute to tumor-supportive niches and are tightly associated with metastatic growth, indicating that FAM3C inhibition could be beneficial for treating patients with breast cancer., (©2023 American Association for Cancer Research.)

Recently, with the development of non-invasive human health monitoring technology including wearable devices, a flexible sensor that monitors 'human sound and movement signals' such as human voice and muscle movement is attracting attention. In this experiment, electrospun nanofibers were mixed with highly conductive nanoparticles and coated with polyaniline to detect the patient's electrical signals. Due to the high piezoelectric effect, nanofiber-based sensors do not require charging through a separate battery, so they can be used as self-powered devices. In addition, the LCR meter test confirmed that the sensor has a high capacitance due to its high conductivity and high sensitivity to electrical signals. The sensor produced in this study can visually estimate the electrical signal of the actual human body through real-time comparison with electromyography (EMG) measuring equipment, and it was confirmed that the error is small. E4, a ubiquitin (Ub) chain assembly factor and post-translational modification protein, plays a key role in the regulation of multiple cellular functions in plants during biotic or abiotic stress. We have more recently reported that E4 factor AtUAP1 is a negative regulator of the osmotic stress response and enhances the multi-Ub chain assembly of E3 ligase Arabidopsis thaliana RING Zinc Finger 1 (AtRZF1). To further investigate the function of other E4 Ub factors in osmotic stress, we isolated AtUAP2, an AtUAP1 homolog, which interacted with AtRZF1, using pull-down assay and bimolecular fluorescence complementation analysis. AtUAP2, a Ub-associated motif-containing protein, interacts with oligo-Ub 5 , -Ub 6 , and -Ub 7 chains. The yeast functional complementation experiment revealed that AtUAP2 functions as an E4 Ub factor. In addition, AtUAP2 is localized in the cytoplasm, different from AtUAP1. The activity of AtUAP2 was relatively strongly induced in the leaf tissue of AtUAP2 promoter-β-glucuronidase transgenic plants by abscisic acid, dehydration, and oxidative stress. atuap2 RNAi lines were more insensitive to osmotic stress condition than wild-type during the early growth of seedlings, whereas the AtUAP2-overexpressing line exhibited relatively more sensitive responses. Analyses of molecular and physiological experiments showed that AtUAP2 could negatively mediate the osmotic stress-induced signaling. Genetic studies showed that AtRZF1 mutation could suppress the dehydration-induced sensitive phenotype of the AtUAP2-overexpressing line, suggesting that AtRZF1 acts genetically downstream of AtUAP2 during osmotic stress. Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a major cause of mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and diagnosis is challenging. Moreover, no specific biomarker for HFpEF has been validated in patients with CKD. The present study aimed to investigate the association between serum osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels and the risk of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), a surrogate of HFpEF, in patients with pre-dialysis CKD., Methods: A total of 2039 patients with CKD at stage 1 to pre-dialysis 5 were categorized into quartiles (Q1 to Q4) by serum OPG levels, and were cross-sectionally analyzed. The study outcome was LVDD, which was operationally defined as the ratio of early transmitral blood flow velocity to early diastolic velocity of the mitral annulus (E/e') > 14., Results: In the analysis of baseline characteristics, higher serum OPG levels were clearly related to the risk factors of HFpEF. A scatter plot analysis revealed a moderate correlation between serum OPG levels and E/e' (R = 0.351, P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the risk of LVDD in Q3 (adjusted odds ratio 2.576, 95% confidence interval 1.279 to 5.188) and Q4 (adjusted odds ratio 3.536, 95% confidence interval 1.657 to 7.544) was significantly higher than that in Q1., Conclusions: Elevated serum OPG levels are associated with the risk of LVDD in patients with pre-dialysis CKD. Coherent light detection and ranging (LiDAR), particularly the frequency-modulated continuous-wave LiDAR, is a robust optical imaging technology for measuring long-range distance and velocity in three dimensions (3D). We propose a spatio-spectral coherent LiDAR based on a unique wavelength-swept laser to enable both axial coherent ranging and lateral spatio-spectral beam scanning simultaneously. Instead of the conventional unidirectional wavelength-swept laser, a flutter-wavelength-swept laser (FWSL) successfully decoupled bidirectional wavelength modulation and continuous wavelength sweep, which overcame the measurable distance limited by the sampling process. The decoupled operation in FWSL enabled sequential sampling of flutter-wavelength modulation across its wide spectral bandwidth of 160 nm and, thus, allowed simultaneous distance and velocity measurement over an extended measurable distance. Herein, complete four-dimensional (4D) imaging, combining real-time 3D distance and velocity measurements, was implemented by solid-state beam scanning. An acousto-optic scanner was synchronized to facilitate the other lateral beam scanning, resulting in an optimized solid-state coherent LiDAR system. Background: Phenytoin intravenous loading doses are administered in status epilepticus to rapidly achieve therapeutic levels. Accurately assessing phenytoin levels after the initial load can be challenging because of its complex pharmacokinetic profile and nonstandardized weight-based loading doses., Objectives: The objectives of this analysis were to determine the incidence of patients achieving goal phenytoin levels after the initial loading dose and characterize factors that contribute to achieving the goal level., Methods: This single-center, retrospective cohort analysis was approved by our institutional review board and included adult patients who received a phenytoin load from May 2016 to March 2021. Patients were excluded if no total phenytoin level was drawn within 24 hours of the load, if the maintenance dose was given before the first level was drawn, or if the patient was on phenytoin before the load. The major endpoint was the percentage of patients achieving a corrected goal phenytoin level of ≥10 mcg/mL after the initial load. Multivariate regression was used to determine predictors of achieving the goal phenytoin level., Results: Of the 152 patients included, 139 patients (91.4%) achieved a corrected goal level after the first load. Patients at goal received a significantly higher median weight-based loading dose (19.1 mg/kg [15.0-20.0] vs 12.6 mg/kg [10.1-15.0], P < 0.01). The multivariate analysis identified weight-based dosing as a statistically significant predictor of achieving the corrected goal level (odds ratio, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.12-1.53; P < 0.01)., Conclusion and Relevance: Most patients achieved a corrected goal phenytoin level after the initial load. A higher median weight-based loading dose was shown to be a predictor of achieving the goal level and should be encouraged for rapid seizure termination. Background: The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have been consistently associated with improved patient experience and surgical outcomes. Despite the release of ERAS Society guidelines specific to gynecologic oncology, the adoption of ERAS in gynecology on global level has been disappointingly low and some centers have shown minimal improvement in clinical outcomes after adopting ERAS. The aim of this study is to describe the development and early experience of ERAS protocols in gynecologic surgery at an urban academic tertiary medical center., Methods: This was an observational prospective cohort study. The target patient population included those with low comorbidities who were scheduled to undergo various types of gynecologic surgeries for both benign and malignant diseases between October 2020 and February 2021. Two attending surgeons implemented the protocols for their patients (ERAS cohort) while three attending surgeons maintained the conventional perioperative care for their patients (non-ERAS cohort). Baseline characteristics, surgical outcomes and patients' answers to a 12-question survey were compared. A case-matched comparative analysis was also performed between the ERAS cohort and the historical non-ERAS cohort (those who received the same types of surgical procedures from the two ERAS attending surgeons prior to the implementation of the protocols)., Results: A total of 244 patients were evaluated (122 in the ERAS cohort vs . 122 in the non-ERAS cohort). The number of vials of opioid analgesia used during the first two postoperative days was significantly lower whereas the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen was more frequent in the ERAS cohort group. The patients in the ERAS group reported less postoperative pain, feelings of hunger and thirst, and greater amount of exercise postoperatively. These benefits of the ERAS cohort were more pronounced in the patients who underwent laparotomic surgeries than those who underwent laparoscopic surgeries. The case-matched comparative analysis also showed similar results. We present research on the role of multiple quantum well periods in extended short-wavelength infrared InGaAs/InAsPSb type-I LEDs. The fabricated LEDs consisted of 6, 15, and 30 quantum well periods, and we evaluated the structural properties and device performance through a combination of theoretical simulations and experimental characterization. The strain and energy band offset was precisely controlled by carefully adjusting the composition of the InAsPSb quaternary material, achieving high valence and conduction band offsets of 350 meV and 94 meV, respectively. Our LEDs demonstrated a high degree of relaxation of 94-96 %. Additionally, we discovered that the temperature-dependent dark current characterization attributed to generation-recombination and trap-assign tunneling, with trap-assign tunneling being more dominant at lower current injections. Electroluminescence analysis revealed that the predominant emission mechanism of the LEDs originated from localized exciton and free exciton radiative recombination, which the 30 quantum wells LED exhibited the highest contribution of the localized exciton/free exciton radiative recombination. We observed that increasing the quantum well periods from 6 to 15 led to an increase in the 300 K electroluminescence intensity of the LED. The job shop scheduling problem (JSSP) is critical for building one smart factory regarding resource management, effective production, and intelligent supply. However, it is still very challenging due to the complex production environment. Besides, most current research only focuses on classical JSSP, while flexible JSSP (FJSSP) is more usual. This article proposes an effective method, GAILS, to deal with JSSP and FJSSP based on genetic algorithm (GA) and iterative local search (ILS). GA is used to find the approximate global solution for the JSSP instance. Each instance was encoded into machine and subtask sequences. The corresponding machine and subtasks chromosome could be obtained through serval-time gene selection, crossover, and mutation. Moreover, multi-objects, including makespan, average utilization ratio, and maximum loading, are used to choose the best chromosome to guide ILS to explore the best local path. Therefore, the proposed method has an excellent search capacity and could balance globality and diversity. To verify the proposed method's effectiveness, the authors compared it with some state-of-the-art methods on sixty-six public JSSP and FJSSP instances. The comparative analysis confirmed the proposed method's effectiveness for classical JSSP and FJSSP in makespan, average utilization ratio, and maximum loading. It delved into the mechanisms behind CRFA, evaluated its clinical efficacy, and investigated potential avenues for future research and application. The insights gained from this review are crucial for healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers, offering an updated perspective on CRFA's role as a viable therapeutic option for knee OA.

The work presented here introduces a facile strategy for the development of flexible and stretchable electrodes that harness the robust characteristics of carbon nanomaterials through laser processing techniques on a liquid crystal polymer (LCP) film. By utilizing LCP film as a biocompatible electronic substrate, control is demonstrated over the laser irradiation parameters to achieve efficient pattern generation and transfer printing processes, thereby yielding highly conductive laser-induced graphene (LIG) bioelectrodes. To enhance the resolution of the patterned LIG film, shadow masks are employed during laser scanning on the LCP film surface. This approach is compatible with surface-mounted device integration, enabling the circuit writing of LIG/LCP materials in a flexible format. Moreover, kirigami-inspired on-skin bioelectrodes are introduced that exhibit reasonable stretchability, enabling independent connections to healthcare hardware platforms for electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyography (EMG) measurements. Additionally, a brain-interfaced LIG microelectrode array is proposed that combines mechanically compliant architectures with LCP encapsulation for stimulation and recording purposes, leveraging their advantageous structural features and superior electrochemical properties. This developed approach offers a cost-effective and scalable route for producing patterned arrays of laser-converted graphene as bioelectrodes. Gut microbiota have crucial effects on brain function via the gut-brain axis. Growing evidence suggests that this interaction is mediated by signaling molecules derived from dietary components metabolized by the intestinal microbiota. Although recent studies have provided a substantial understanding of the cell-specific effects of gut microbial molecules in gut microbiome-brain research, further validation is needed. This review presents recent findings on gut microbiota-derived dietary metabolites that enter the systemic circulation and influence the cell-to-cell interactions between gut microbes and cells in the central nervous system (CNS), particularly microglia, astrocytes, and neuronal cells, ultimately affecting cognitive function, mood, and behavior. Specifically, this review highlights the roles of metabolites produced by the gut microbiota via dietary component transformation, including short-chain fatty acids, tryptophan metabolites, and bile acid metabolites, in promoting the function and maturation of brain cells and suppressing inflammatory signals in the CNS. We also discuss future directions for gut microbiome-brain research, focusing on diet-induced microbial metabolite-based therapies as possible novel approaches to mental health treatment., (Copyright © 2023 The Author. Rationale: Primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma is a rare malignant pulmonary tumor accompanied by calcifications in approximately 15% of cases. These calcifications usually have a fine, stippled appearance; coarse shapes have seldom been reported. Moreover, the presence of coarse calcifications often suggests benign tumors, which vastly differ in treatment. We present a rare case of primary pulmonary sarcoma with coarse intratumoral calcifications, the diagnosis of which was delayed because of its radiologic appearance., Patient Concerns: A computed tomography (CT) scan of a 69-year-old man with right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain revealed an incidental mass at the base of the right lower lobe, the margin of which was not well described with respect to the liver, and intratumoral coarse calcification was noted. Initially, the lesion was believed to be hepatic, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed. Based on its imaging features, the mass was thought to be a pulmonary lesion, and a preliminary diagnosis of a benign lesion, such as a hamartoma or granuloma, was made. Four months after the initial CT scan, the patient's RUQ pain had aggravated; however, no change in the mass was observed on follow-up CT., Diagnosis: The final diagnosis was primary pulmonary sarcoma, proven by surgical biopsy., Interventions: Wedge resection of the right lower lobe was performed, and the patient received adjuvant chemotherapy., Outcomes: The patient's RUQ pain improved, and no recurrence or metastasis has been reported to date., Lessons: This case describes a rare presentation of a primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma with coarse intratumoral calcifications and the MRI features of the lesion. Intratumoral coarse calcifications often suggest benign lesions, such as hamartomas or post-inflammatory granulomas; however, as malignant lesions cannot be completely excluded, other radiologic and clinical features should be considered carefully. Focal areas of enhancement and eccentric calcification distribution might suggest malignant lesions such as primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma. Furthermore, despite not being used routinely, MRI scans might be helpful because advanced MRI techniques, such as diffusion-weighted imaging, can help distinguish malignant lesions from benign lesions. Background: Insulin resistance is prevalent in chronic kidney disease and may accelerate the progression of chronic kidney disease. This study aimed to investigate whether insulin resistance is associated with the development of incident chronic kidney disease in a population with normal renal function., Methods: A total of 3,331 participants from a community-based cohort with normal renal function were prospectively analyzed. We determined the relationship of insulin resistance indices with the incident chronic kidney disease using the Cox proportional hazard model and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis., Results: During a mean follow-up of 11.03 ± 4.22 years, incident chronic kidney disease occurred in 414 participants (12.4%). The high homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance level group had an increased risk of incident chronic kidney disease (hazard ratio [HR], 1.40; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13-1.74; p = 0.002) compared to the normal group after adjustment for age, sex, history of hypertension, body mass index, total cholesterol, alcohol drinking status, smoking status, and baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate. The risk of incident chronic kidney disease also increased with the lower quantitative insulin sensitivity check index level (HR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.41-0.92; p = 0.02) and higher leptin-adiponectin ratio level (HR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.06-1.42; p = 0.006)., Conclusion: Higher insulin resistance indices are associated with the incidence of chronic kidney disease. Our data suggest that increased insulin resistance may be involved in the development of incident chronic kidney disease in a population with normal renal function.

Purpose: Pegfilgrastim is a widely used long-acting granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) that prevents febrile neutropenia (FN) in patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of chemotherapy-related FN events and other adverse events (AEs) during chemotherapy in Korean patients with breast cancer treated with pegfilgrastim as secondary prophylactic support., Materials and Methods: This was a multicenter, open-label, prospective, observational study. A total of 1255 patients were enrolled from 43 institutions. The incidence of FN was evaluated as the primary endpoint. The secondary endpoints included (1) incidence of bone pain, (2) proportion of patients with a relative dose intensity (RDI) of ≥85%, and (3) proportion of patients with AE., Results: Pegfilgrastim administration reduced FN by 11.8-1.6%. The highest incidence of bone pain was observed at the time point of the 1st day after the administration and mild bone pain was the most common of all bone pain severity. The mean RDI was 98.5 ± 7.3%, and the proportion of the patients with and RDI≥85% was 96.9% (1169/1233). AEs were reported in 52.6% of the patients, and serious drug reactions occurred in only 0.7%., Conclusion: The use of pegfilgrastim as secondary prophylaxis was effective and safe for preventing FN in patients with breast cancer who were treated with chemotherapy., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Purpose: The isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) family plays an essential role in metabolism and energy production. The relative expression levels of IDH isoforms (IDH1, IDH2, and IDH3) have prognostic significance in several malignancies, including breast carcinoma. However, the IDH isozyme expression levels in different cancer stages and types have not been determined in breast carcinoma tissues., Methods: We analyzed the messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein levels of IDH (IDH1, IDH2, and IDH3A) and α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) in 59 breast carcinoma tissues., Results: The mRNA level of IDH2 was significantly increased at stages 2 and 3 in triple-negative and (ER-/PR-/HER+) breast cancers. However, the elevated α-KG level was only observed in stages 2 and 3, with no differences in the various breast carcinoma types. Western blotting analysis showed that IDH2 protein expression increased in the patient tissues and cell lines. An in vitro study showed IDH2 downregulation in the triple-negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 that inhibited cell proliferation and migration and induced cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase., Conclusion: These findings suggest that different from IDH1 and IDH3, IDH2 is more highly expressed in stages 2 and 3 breast cancer tissues, especially in triple-negative breast cancer. IDH2 potentially serves as a target to detect unknown mechanisms in breast cancer.

Aims: Long-term consumption of a western diet (WD), which is characterized by high intake of saturated fats and sugary drinks, causes cognitive impairment. However, the molecular mechanism by which WD induces cognitive impairment remains unclear. Taste receptor type 1 member 3 (TAS1R3), activated by ligands of WD, is expressed in extra-oral tissues, including the brain, and particularly in the hippocampus. This study investigated whether TAS1R3 regulates WD-induced cognitive impairment in mice., Main Methods: Male C57BL/6J wild-type (WT) and Tas1r3 knock-out (KO) mice were fed either a normal diet (ND) or WD for 18 weeks. Cognitive functions were assessed using novel object recognition and Barnes maze tests. The mechanisms underlying WD-induced cognitive impairment were assessed using RNA-sequencing and bioinformatics analysis., Key Findings: Cognitive impairment was observed in WT mice fed WD (WT-WD) compared with WT-ND mice. Conversely, mice lacking TAS1R3 were not cognitively impaired even under long-term WD feeding. Hippocampal transcriptome analysis revealed upregulated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling and increased AMPK-targeted sirtuin 3 expression in KO-WD mice. Pathway enrichment analysis showed that response to oxidative stress was downregulated, whereas neurogenesis was upregulated in dentate gyrus of KO-WD mice. We examined long-term response (2008-2017) of the macrobenthos to the Hebei Spirit oil spill that occurred around the Taean coast, Korea, in December 2007. Oil concentrations were below the Korea/US environmental standards as of January 2008. Organic matter, chlorophyll-a, and zooplankton abundance dominated by Noctiluca scintillans were higher after the spill. Macrobenthic diversity recovered to pre-incident (2007) level in 2011. Biomass exceeded that level in 2011 and the increase prolonged for 5 years. Cross-correlation and regression analyses showed that chlorophyll-a at year t and zooplankton abundance at t-2 had a significant relationship with macrobenthic biomass at t (p < 0.05 for both), suggesting the transfer of increased organic matter (transformed from crude oil within the pelagic ecosystem) into the benthic ecosystem. Armoracia rusticana P. G. Gaertner. belongs to the Brassicaceae family and has aroused scientific interest for its anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. In a continuing investigation to discover bioactive constituents from A. rusticana, we isolated 19 phenolic glycosides including three undescribed flavonol glycosides and one undescribed neolignan glycoside from MeOH extract of this plant. Their structures were elucidated based on NMR spectroscopic analysis ( 1 H, 13 C, 1 H- 1 H COSY, HSQC, and HMBC), HRESIMS, and chemical methods. The determination of their absolute configuration was accomplished by ECD and LC-MS analysis. Introduction: Although the contralateral oblique (CLO) view at 50°±5° is clinically useful for cervical epidural access, no previous studies have confirmed its safety. This prospective observational study was conducted to assess the safety profile, including the risk of dural puncture, in fluoroscopically guided cervical epidural access using the CLO view., Methods: In cervical epidural access using the CLO view, the incidence of dural puncture was investigated as the primary outcome. Other intraprocedural complications, including intravascular entry, subdural entry, spinal cord injury and vasovagal injury, and postprocedural complications were investigated as secondary outcomes. Procedural variables including first-pass success, final success, needling time, total number of needle passes and false loss of resistance (LOR) were evaluated., Results: Of the 393 patients who underwent cervical interlaminar epidural access were included for analysis, no instances of dural puncture or spinal cord injury were observed. The incidence of intravascular entry, vasovagal reaction and subdural entry were 3.1%, 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively. All procedures were successfully performed, with 85.0% of first-pass success rate. The mean needling time was 133.8 (74.9) s. The false-positive and false-negative LOR rates were 8.2% and 2.0%, respectively. A saturated iron-core type superconducting fault current limiter (SI-SFCL) can effectively restrict the magnitude of the fault current and alleviate the strain on circuit breakers in DC power systems. Design of a superconducting coil (SC), which is one of the key tasks in the SI-SFCL design, requires guaranteeing a sufficient magnetic field, ensuring optimization of the shape and size, minimizing the wire cost, and satisfying the safety and stability of operation. Generally, finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate and evaluate the operating characteristics of SCs, from which it is possible to determine their optimal design parameters. When the coil is complex and large, the simulation time may range from hours to days, and if input parameters change even slightly, the simulations have to be redone from scratch. Recent advances in deep learning represent the ability to be effective for modeling and optimizing complex problems from training data or in real-time. In this paper, we presented a combination of the FEM simulation and deep Q-network (DQN) algorithm to optimize the SC design of a lab-scale SI-SFCL for a DC power system. The detailed design process and options for the SC of SI-SFCL were proposed. In order to analyze the characteristics related to the electromagnetic properties and operational features of the SC, a 3D FEM model was developed. Then, a DQN model was constructed and integrated with the FEM simulation for training and optimizing the design parameters of the SC in real-time. Background: We compared the efficacy and safety of low-intensity atorvastatin and ezetimibe combination therapy with moderate-intensity atorvastatin monotherapy in patients requiring cholesterol-lowering therapy., Methods: At 19 centers in Korea, 290 patients were randomized to 4 groups: atorvastatin 5 mg and ezetimibe 10 mg (A5E), ezetimibe 10 mg (E), atorvastatin 5 mg (A5), and atorvastatin 10 mg (A10). Clinical and laboratory examinations were performed at baseline, and at 4-week and 8-week follow-ups. The primary endpoint was percentage change from baseline in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels at the 8-week follow-up. Secondary endpoints included percentage changes from baseline in additional lipid parameters., Results: Baseline characteristics were similar among the study groups. At the 8-week follow-up, percentage changes in LDL cholesterol levels were significantly greater in the A5E group (49.2%) than in the E (18.7%), A5 (27.9%), and A10 (36.4%) groups. Similar findings were observed regarding the percentage changes in total cholesterol, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B levels. Triglyceride levels were also significantly decreased in the A5E group than in the E group, whereas high-density lipoprotein levels substantially increased in the A5E group than in the E group. In patients with low- and intermediate-cardiovascular risk, 93.3% achieved the target LDL cholesterol levels in the A5E group, 40.0% in the E group, 66.7% in the A5 group, and 92.9% in the A10 group. In addition, 31.4% of patients in the A5E group, 8.1% in E, 9.7% in A5, and 7.3% in the A10 group reached the target levels of both LDL cholesterol < 70 mg/dL and reduction of LDL ≥ 50% from baseline., Conclusions: The addition of ezetimibe to low-intensity atorvastatin had a greater effect on lowering LDL cholesterol than moderate-intensity atorvastatin alone, offering an effective treatment option for cholesterol management, especially in patients with low and intermediate risks., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose., (Copyright © 2023 the Author(s). Background and Objectives : Critically ill surgical patients are susceptible to various postoperative complications, including acute kidney injury (AKI) and multiorgan distress syndrome (MODS). These complications intensify patient suffering and significantly increase morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to identify the biomarkers for predicting AKI and MODS in critically ill surgical patients. Materials and Methods : We prospectively enrolled critically ill surgical patients admitted to the intensive care unit via the emergency department between July 2022 and July 2023. A total of 83 patients were recruited, and their data were used to analyze MODS. Three patients who showed decreased creatinine clearance at the initial presentation were excluded from the analysis for AKI. Patient characteristics and laboratory parameters including white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil count, delta neutrophil index, urine and serum β2-microglobulin, and urine serum mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) were analyzed to determine the reliable biomarker to predict AKI and MODS. Results : The following parameters were independently correlated with MODS: systolic blood pressure (SBP), initial neutrophil count, and platelet count, according to a logistic regression model. The optimal cut-off values for SBP, initial neutrophil count, and platelet count were 113 mmHg (sensitivity 66.7%; specificity 73.9%), 8.65 (X 3 ) (10 9 /L) (sensitivity 72.2%; specificity 64.6%), and 195.0 (X 3 ) (10 9 /L) (sensitivity 66.7%; specificity 81.5%), respectively. According to the logistic regression model, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and initial urine mtDNAcn were independently correlated with AKI. The optimal cut-off value for DBP and initial urine mtDNAcn were 68.5 mmHg (sensitivity 61.1%; specificity 79.5%) and 1225.6 copies/μL (sensitivity 55.6%; specificity 95.5%), respectively. Conclusions : SBP, initial neutrophil count, and platelet count were independent predictors of MODS in critically ill patients undergoing surgery. DBP and initial urine mtDNAcn levels were independent predictors of AKI in critically ill surgical patients. Large-scale multicenter prospective studies are needed to confirm our results.

NR2D subunit-containing NMDA receptors (NMDARs) gradually disappear during brain maturation but can be recruited by pathophysiological stimuli in the adult brain. Here, we report that 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) intoxication recruited NR2D subunit-containing NMDARs that generated an Mg 2+ -resistant tonic NMDA current (I NMDA ) in dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the midbrain of mature male mice. MPTP selectively generated an Mg 2+ -resistant tonic I NMDA in DA neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and ventral tegmental area (VTA). Consistently, MPTP increased NR2D but not NR2B expression in the midbrain regions. Pharmacological or genetic NR2D interventions abolished the generation of Mg 2+ -resistant tonic I NMDA in SNpc DA neurons, and thus attenuated subsequent DA neuronal loss and gait deficits in MPTP-treated mice. These results show that extrasynaptic NR2D recruitment generates Mg 2+ -resistant tonic I NMDA and exacerbates DA neuronal loss, thus contributing to MPTP-induced Parkinsonism. The state-dependent NR2D recruitment could be a novel therapeutic target for mitigating cell type-specific neuronal death in neurodegenerative diseases. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT NR2D subunit-containing NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are widely expressed in the brain during late embryonic and early postnatal development, and then downregulated during brain maturation and preserved at low levels in a few regions of the adult brain. Certain stimuli can recruit NR2D subunits to generate tonic persistent NMDAR currents in nondepolarized neurons in the mature brain. Our results show that MPTP intoxication recruits NR2D subunits in midbrain dopaminergic (DA) neurons, which leads to tonic NMDAR current-promoting dopaminergic neuronal death and consequent abnormal gait behavior in the MPTP mouse model of Parkinson's disease (PD). Objectives: While older adults using community care services are known to be vulnerable for depression, community care utilization (CCU) may help to improve the mental health of these elderly. To date, however, it is much less clear how CCU affects depressive symptoms in the elderly population. This study focuses on the trajectory of depressive symptoms across years of CCU among older adults in Korea., Methods: Using the 2006-2019 Korean Welfare Panel Survey, this study is focused on elderly born in 1940 or earlier and selected 3281 persons for baseline interviews in 2006. This consisted of 35 800 person-year observations during a period of 14 years. Panel data analysis were employed to construct years of CCU., Results: After controlling for covariates, linear term of years using community care was negatively associated with depressive symptoms, but a quadratic term was positively significant. The trajectory of depressive symptoms across the years of CCU follows a U-shaped curve. Older adults in the first year of using community care reported the highest level of depressive symptoms. However, a significant and steady decrease in depressive symptoms was observed during the following 9 years of CCU, which then gradually increased. The level of depressive symptoms at the 14th year of using community care remains significantly lower than the level at the outset of its utilization., Conclusions: This finding implies that CCU could be beneficial for improving mental health among older adults.

Despite achievements in the remarkable photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of photoelectrodes based on organometal halide perovskites (OHPs), the scaling up of small-scale OHP-based PEC systems to large-scale systems remains a great challenge for their practical application in solar water splitting. Significant resistive losses and intrinsic defects are major obstacles to the scaling up of OHP-based PEC systems, leading to the PEC performance degradation of large-scale OHP photoelectrodes. Herein, a scalable design of the OHP-based PEC systems by modularization of the optimized OHP photoelectrodes exhibiting a high solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 10.4% is suggested. As a proof-of-concept, the OHP-based PEC module achieves an optimal PEC performance by avoiding major obstacles in the scaling up of the OHP photoelectrodes. The constructed OHP module is composed of a total of 16 OHP photoelectrodes, and a photocurrent of 11.52 mA is achieved under natural sunlight without external bias. The successful operation of unassisted solar water splitting using the OHP module without external bias can provide insights into the design of scalable OHP-based PEC systems for future practical application and commercialization., (© 2023 The Authors. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is deeply embedded in all aspects of our daily lives, promoting efficiency and safety in routine tasks at home and work. Likewise, dentistry is rapidly exploring new uses of AI for image analysis, electronic health records, and clinical decision-making. The accelerating advancement of AI and its application in dentistry demands dental education conscientiously integrate AI into curricula and equip graduates to use it ethically and responsibly in practice. The approach must be threefold: instill knowledge of the basic algorithms and appropriate application of AI, discuss its limitations/biases, and examine current and potential ethical challenges in practice. Furthermore, dental education must protect the public from intentional and unintentional harm introduced by AI. Therefore, the purpose of this perspective paper is to discuss various considerations for integrating AI into the dental curriculum, prioritizing patient safety by ensuring knowledgeable, safe, and ethical application by future providers., (© 2023 The Authors. Background: The medium cutoff (MCO) dialyzer increases the removal of several middle molecules more effectively than high-flux hemodialysis (HD). However, comparative data addressing the efficacy and safety of MCO dialyzers vs. postdilution hemodiafiltration (HDF) in Korean patients are lacking., Methods: Nine patients with chronic HD were included in this pre-post study. Patients underwent HD with an MCO dialyzer for 4 weeks, followed by a 2-week washout period using a high-flux dialyzer to minimize carryover effects, and then turned over to postdilution HDF for 4 weeks. Reduction ratios and differences in the uremic toxins before and after dialysis were calculated from the MCO dialysis, postdilution HDF, and high-flux HD. In the in vitro study, EA.hy926 cells were incubated with dialyzed serum., Results: Compared to postdilution HDF, the MCO dialyzer achieved significantly higher reduction ratios for larger middle molecules (myoglobin, kappa free light chain [κFLC], and lambda FLC [λFLC]). Similarly, the differences in myoglobin, κFLC, and λFLC concentrations before and after the last dialysis session were significantly greater in MCO dialysis than in postdilution HDF. The expression of Bax and nuclear factor κB was decreased in the serum after dialysis with the MCO dialyzer than with HDF., Conclusion: Compared with high-volume postdilution HDF, MCO dialysis did not provide greater removal of molecules below 12,000 Da, whereas it was superior in the removal of larger uremic middle molecule toxins in patients with kidney failure. Moreover, these results may be expected to have an anti-apoptotic effect on the human endothelium.

Hydnum is a genus of ectomycorrhizal fungi belonging to the Hydnaceae family. It is widely distributed across different regions of the world, including North America, Europe, and Asia; however, some of them showed disjunct distributions. In recent years, with the integration of molecular techniques, the taxonomy and classification of Hydnum have undergone several revisions and advancements. However, these changes have not yet been applied in the Republic of Korea. In this study, we conducted an integrated analysis combining the morphological and molecular analyses of 30 specimens collected over a period of approximately 10 years in the Republic of Korea. For molecular analysis, the sequence data of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nrLSU), and a portion of translation elongation factor 1-α ( TEF1 ) were employed as molecular markers. Through this study, we identified eight species that had previously not been reported to occur in the Republic of Korea, including one new species, Hydnum paucispinum . Background: Patients with prostate cancer who have high-risk biochemical recurrence have an increased risk of progression. The efficacy and safety of enzalutamide plus androgen-deprivation therapy and enzalutamide monotherapy, as compared with androgen-deprivation therapy alone, are unknown., Methods: In this phase 3 trial, we enrolled patients with prostate cancer who had high-risk biochemical recurrence with a prostate-specific antigen doubling time of 9 months or less. Patients were randomly assigned, in a 1:1:1 ratio, to receive enzalutamide (160 mg) daily plus leuprolide every 12 weeks (combination group), placebo plus leuprolide (leuprolide-alone group), or enzalutamide monotherapy (monotherapy group). The primary end point was metastasis-free survival, as assessed by blinded independent central review, in the combination group as compared with the leuprolide-alone group. A key secondary end point was metastasis-free survival in the monotherapy group as compared with the leuprolide-alone group. Other secondary end points were patient-reported outcomes and safety., Results: A total of 1068 patients underwent randomization: 355 were assigned to the combination group, 358 to the leuprolide-alone group, and 355 to the monotherapy group. The patients were followed for a median of 60.7 months. At 5 years, metastasis-free survival was 87.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 83.0 to 90.6) in the combination group, 71.4% (95% CI, 65.7 to 76.3) in the leuprolide-alone group, and 80.0% (95% CI, 75.0 to 84.1) in the monotherapy group. With respect to metastasis-free survival, enzalutamide plus leuprolide was superior to leuprolide alone (hazard ratio for metastasis or death, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.30 to 0.61; P<0.001); enzalutamide monotherapy was also superior to leuprolide alone (hazard ratio for metastasis or death, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.46 to 0.87; P = 0.005). No new safety signals were observed, with no substantial between-group differences in quality-of-life measures., Conclusions: In patients with prostate cancer with high-risk biochemical recurrence, enzalutamide plus leuprolide was superior to leuprolide alone with respect to metastasis-free survival; enzalutamide monotherapy was also superior to leuprolide alone. The safety profile of enzalutamide was consistent with that shown in previous clinical studies, with no apparent detrimental effect on quality of life. This research explores the alteration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using a method called postsynthetic metal exchange. We focus on the shift from a Zn-based MOF containing a [Zn 4 O(COO) 6 ] secondary building unit (SBU) of octahedral site symmetry (ANT-1(Zn)) to a Fe-based one with a [Fe 3 III O(COO) 6 ] + SBU of trigonal prismatic site symmetry (ANT-1(Fe)). The symmetry-mismatched SBU transformation cleverly maintains the MOF's overall structure by adjusting the conformation of the flexible 1,3,5-benzenetribenzoate linker to alleviate the framework strain. The process triggers a decrease in the framework volume and pore size alongside a change in the framework's charge. These alterations influence the MOF's ability to adsorb gas and dye. During the transformation, core-shell MOFs (ANT-1(Zn@Fe)) are formed as intermediate products, demonstrating unique gas sorption traits and adjusted dye adsorption preferences due to the structural modifications at the core-shell interface. Heteronuclear clusters, located at the framework interfaces, enhance the heat of CO 2 adsorption. Furthermore, they also influence the selectivity of the dye size. This research provides valuable insights into fabricating novel MOFs with unique properties by modifying the SBU of a MOF with flexible organic linkers from one site symmetry to another.

Focal cerebral ischemia (fCI) can result in brain injury and sensorimotor deficits. Brown algae are currently garnering scientific attention as potential therapeutic candidates for fCI. This study investigated the therapeutic effects of the hot water extract of Petalonia binghamiae (wPB), a brown alga, in in vitro and in vivo models of fCI. The neuroprotective efficacy of wPB was evaluated in an in vitro excitotoxicity model established using HT-22 cells challenged with glutamate. Afterward, C57/BL6 mice were administered wPB for 7 days (10 or 100 mg/kg, intragastric) and subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion (MCAO/R) operation, which was used as an in vivo fCI model. wPB co-incubation significantly inhibited cell death, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, as well as stimulated the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an antioxidant enzyme, and the nuclear translocation of its upstream regulator, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in HT-22 cells challenged with glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Pretreatment with either dose of wPB significantly attenuated infarction volume, neuronal death, and sensorimotor deficits in an in vivo fCI model. Furthermore, the attenuation of oxidative stress and apoptosis in the ischemic lesion accompanied the wPB-associated protection. This study suggests that wPB can counteract fCI via an antioxidative effect, upregulating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

This study aimed to discover the quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with a high seed protein content in soybean and unravel the potential candidate genes. We developed two recombinant inbred line populations: YS and SI, by crossing Saedanbaek (high protein) with YS2035-B-91-1-B-1 (low protein) and Saedanbaek with Ilmi (low protein), respectively, and evaluated the protein content for three consecutive years. Using single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-marker-based linkage maps, four QTLs were located on chromosomes 15, 18, and 20 with high logarithm of odds values (5.9-55.0), contributing 5.5-66.0% phenotypic variance. In all three experimental years, qPSD20-1 and qPSD20-2 were stable and identified in overlapping positions in the YS and SI populations, respectively. Additionally, novel QTLs were identified on chromosomes 15 and 18. Considering the allelic sequence variation between parental lines, 28 annotated genes related to soybean seed protein-including starch, lipid, and fatty acid biosynthesis-related genes-were identified within the QTL regions. These genes could potentially affect protein accumulation during seed development, as well as sucrose and oil metabolism. Overall, this study offers insights into the genetic mechanisms underlying a high soybean protein content. The identified potential candidate genes can aid marker-assisted selection for developing soybean lines with an increased protein content.

We report a resonant cavity infrared detector (RCID) with an InAsSb/InAs superlattice absorber with a thickness of only ≈ 100 nm, a 33-period GaAs/Al 0.92 Ga 0.08 As distributed Bragg reflector bottom mirror, and a Ge/SiO 2 /Ge top mirror. At a low bias voltage of 150 mV, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaches 58% at the resonance wavelength λres ≈ 4.6 µm, with linewidth δλ = 19-27 nm. The thermal background current for a realistic system scenario with f/4 optic that views a 300 K scene is estimated by integrating the photocurrent generated by background spanning the entire mid-IR spectral band (3-5 µm). The resulting specific detectivity is a factor of 3 lower than for a state-of-the-art broadband HgCdTe device at 300 K, where dark current dominates the noise. However, at 125 K where the suppression of background noise becomes critical, the estimated specific detectivity D* of 5.5 × 10 12  cm Hz ½ /W is more than 3× higher. This occurs despite a non-optimal absorber cut-off that causes the EQE to decrease rapidly with decreasing temperature, e.g., to 33% at 125 K. The present RCID's advantage over the broadband device depends critically on its low EQE at non-resonance wavelengths: ≤ 1% in the range 3.9-5.5 µm. Simulations using NRL MULTIBANDS indicate that impact ionization in the bottom contact and absorber layers dominates the dark current at near ambient temperatures. We expect future design modifications to substantially enhance D* throughout the investigated temperature range of 100-300 K.

Background: Underweight status increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in the general population. However, whether underweight status is associated with an increased risk of developing end-stage kidney disease is unknown., Methods: A total of 9 845 420 participants aged ≥20 years who underwent health checkups were identified from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database and analysed. Individuals with underweight (body mass index [BMI] < 18.5 kg/m 2 ) and obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m 2 ) were categorized according to the World Health Organization recommendations for Asian populations., Results: During a mean follow-up period of 9.2 ± 1.1 years, 26 406 participants were diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease. After fully adjusting for other potential predictors, the moderate to severe underweight group (<17 kg/m 2 ) had a significantly higher risk of end-stage kidney disease than that of the reference (normal) weight group (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.563; 95% confidence interval, 1.337-1.828), and competing risk analysis to address the competing risk of death also showed the similar results (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.228; 95% confidence interval, 1.042-1.448). Compared with that of the reference BMI group (24-25 kg/m 2 ), the adjusted hazard ratios for end-stage kidney disease increased as the BMI decreased by 1 kg/m 2 . In the sensitivity analysis, sustained underweight status or progression to underweight status over two repeated health checkups, when compared with normal weight status, had a higher hazard ratio for end-stage kidney disease., Conclusions: Underweight status is associated with an increased risk of end-stage kidney disease, and this association gradually strengthens as BMI decreases., (© 2023 The Authors. Four undescribed neolignan analogs, together with eight known compounds, were isolated from the twigs of Pinus koraiensis (Korean pine). The chemical structure of the isolated compounds was determined through extensive spectroscopic analysis and chemical method. Their relative and absolute configurations were assigned through a well-established empirical rule and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analysis, respectively. Four compounds (3 and 9-11) at 20 μM concentration showed significant neurotrophic effect by inducing nerve growth factor (NGF) secretion in C6 cells with the stimulation levels a range of 140.82 ± 4.62% to 160.04 ± 11.04%. Additionally, the result indicated that the glycosylation of neolignan led to an improvement in neurotrophic activity compared to their aglycone form. Study Objective: We evaluated the effect of vitamin C administration on postoperative catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD)., Design: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial., Setting: University tertiary hospital., Patients: The participants were patients undergoing transurethral resection of bladder tumor., Intervention: Patients were randomly assigned to either vitamin C (n = 59) or control (n = 59). The vitamin C group received 1 g of vitamin C intravenously and the control group received normal saline, administered after the induction of anesthesia., Measurements: The primary endpoint was moderate or greater CRBD immediately postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included the incidence of moderate or greater CRBD at 1, 2, and 6 h postoperatively. The symptom of CRBD is either a burning sensation with an urge to void or discomfort in the suprapubic area. Moderate CRBD was defined as spontaneously reported by the patient without any behavioral responses, such as attempts to remove the urinary catheter, intense verbal reactions, and flailing limbs. Severe CRBD was spontaneously reported by the patient with behavioral responses. Patient satisfaction scores were also evaluated., Main Results: The group that received vitamin C exhibited a significantly lower incidence of moderate or greater CRBD immediately postoperatively compared with the control group (17 [28.8%] vs. 40 [67.8%], p < 0.001, relative risk [95% confidence interval] = 0.426 [0.274-0.656]). The vitamin C group also showed a significantly lower incidence of moderate or greater CRBD at 1 and 2 h postoperatively compared with the control group (10 [16.9%] vs. 25 [42.4%], p = 0.003; and 5 [8.5%] vs. 16 [27.1%], p = 0.008, respectively). However, there was no significant difference in the incidence of moderate or greater CRBD 6 h postoperatively. Background/objectives: Probiotics have been suggested as potent modulators of age-related disorders in immunological functions, yet little is known about sex-dependent effects of probiotic supplements. Therefore, we aimed to investigate sex-dependent effects of probiotics on profiles of the gut microbiota and peripheral immune cells in healthy older adults., Subjects/methods: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial, healthy elderly individuals ≥ 65 yrs old were administered probiotic capsules (or placebo) for 12 wk. Gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and bioinformatic analyses. Peripheral immune cells were profiled using flow cytometry for lymphocytes (natural killer, B, CD4 + T, and CD8 + T cells), dendritic cells, monocytes, and their subpopulations., Results: Compared with placebo, phylum Firmicutes was significantly reduced in the probiotic group in women, but not in men. At the genus level, sex-specific responses included reductions in the relative abundances of pro-inflammatory gut microbes, including Catabacter and unclassified&#95;Coriobacteriales, and Burkholderia and unclassified Enterobacteriaceae, in men and women, respectively. Peripheral immune cell profiling analysis revealed that in men, probiotics significantly reduced the proportions of dendritic cells and CD14 + CD16 - monocytes; however, these effects were not observed in women. In contrast, the proportion of total CD4 + T cells was significantly reduced in women in the probiotic group. Background: TRAIL is an anticancer drug that induces cancer cell apoptosis by interacting with death receptors (DRs). However, owing to low cell-surface expression of DRs, certain colorectal cancer (CRC) cells resist TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infection can elevate DR protein expression in cancer cells, potentially influencing their TRAIL sensitivity. However, the precise mechanism by which NDV infection modulates DR expression and impacts TRAIL sensitivity in cancer cells remains unknown., Methods: Herein, we developed nonpathogenic NDV VG/GA strain-based recombinant NDV (rNDV) and TRAIL gene-containing rNDV (rNDV-TRAIL). We observed that viral infections lead to increased DR and TRAIL expressions and activate signaling proteins involved in intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathways. Experiments were conducted in vitro using TRAIL-resistant CRC cells (HT-29) and nonresistant CRC cells (HCT116) and in vivo using relevant mouse models., Results: rNDV-TRAIL was found to exhibit better apoptotic efficacy than rNDV in CRC cells. Notably, rNDV-TRAIL had the stronger cancer cell-killing effect in TRAIL-resistant CRC cells. Western blot analyses showed that both rNDV and rNDV-TRAIL infections activate signaling proteins involved in the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways. Notably, rNDV-TRAIL promotes concurrent intrinsic and extrinsic signal transduction in both HCT-116 and HT-29 cells., Conclusions: Therefore, rNDV-TRAIL infection effectively enhances DR expression in DR-depressed HT-29 cells. Moreover, the TRAIL protein expressed by rNDV-TRAIL effectively interacts with DR, leading to enhanced apoptosis in TRAIL-resistant HT-29 cells. Large amounts of microplastics are discharged into wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), from where some of them are released into natural waterbodies on account of their not being fully eliminated by WWTPs. To investigate the behavior and emission of microplastics from WWTPs, we selected four WWTPs with different treatment technologies, including anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (A 2 O), sequence batch reactor (SBR), media, and membrane bioreactor (MBR). The number of microplastics detected using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy ranged from 520 to 1820 particles/L in influent and from 0.56 to 2.34 particles/L in effluent. The microplastic removal efficiencies of four WWTPs were over 99%, indicating that the type of treatment technologies did not significantly affect the removal rate of microplastics. In the unit process for each WWTP, the major stages relating to microplastic removal were the secondary clarifier and tertiary treatment processes. Most microplastics detected were categorized as fragments and fibers, while other types were hardly detected. The size of more than 80% of microplastic particles detected in WWTPs ranged between 20 and 300 μm, indicating that they were significantly smaller than the size threshold defined for microplastics. Therefore, we used thermal extraction-desorption coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (TED-GC-MS) to evaluate the microplastic mass content in all four WWTPs, and the results were compared with those of the FT-IR analysis. In this method, only four components, namely polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate, were analyzed because of the analysis limitation, and the total microplastic concentration represented the sum of four components concentrations. The dataset currently available comprises data on the removal rates of heavy metals (Ba, Se, Cr, Fe, Cd, As, and Co) through the incorporation of seashells and palm oil kernel shells into pervious concrete for stormwater treatment. Stormwater runoff was collected from commercial areas in Taman University, Skudai, Johor, Malaysia. The stormwater samples underwent filtration and were preserved in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles at a temperature of 4 °C for use as incoming water. The outgoing water, referred to as effluent, was obtained from tests performed on pervious concrete samples after a curing period of 28 days. The pervious concrete mixes were created with a water-to-binder ratio (w/b ratio) of 32% and a sand ratio of 10%. Three different levels of palm oil kernel shell and seashell content were used as coarse aggregate replacements: 0%, 25%, and 50%. Two single-size group were considered for both palm oil kernel shell and seashell: (6.3-9.5 mm) and (4.75-6.3 mm). Heavy metal analyses were conducted on the influent and effluent using a PerkinElmer ELAN 6100 Series Inductively Coupled Plasma- Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). Here, we report monodispersed tricomponent MnNSs-SnO 2 @Pt and MnNFs-SnO 2 @Pt nanocomposites prepared by simultaneous SnO 2 and Pt nanodot coating on Mn nanospheres (MnNSs) and Mn nanoflowers (MnNFs) for highly efficient CO 2 photoreduction in visible-NIR-sunlight irradiation. MnNFs-SnO 2 @Pt showed higher efficiency with a quantum yield of 3.21% and a chemical yield of 5.45% for CO 2 conversion under visible light irradiation for HCOOH formation with 94% selectivity. Similarly, MnNFs-SnO 2 @Pt displayed significant photocatalytic efficiency in NIR and sunlight irradiation for HCOOH yield. MnNFs-SnO 2 @Pt nanocomposites also showed robust morphology and sustained structural stability with shelf-life for at least 1 year and were utilized for at least 10 reaction cycles without losing significant photocatalytic efficiency. The high surface area (94.98 m 2 /g), efficient electron-hole separation, and Pt-nanodot support in MnNFs--SnO 2 @Pt contributed to a higher photocatalytic efficacy toward CO 2 reduction.

We recently developed a novel hyperspectral excitation-resolved near-infrared fluorescence imaging system (HER-NIRF) based on a continuous-wave wavelength-swept laser. In this study, this technique is applied to measure the distribution of the therapeutic agent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) by utilizing solvatochromic shift in the spectral profile of albumin-bound Indocyanine green (ICG). Using wide-field imaging in turbid media, complex dynamics of albumin-bound ICG are measured in mixtures of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water. Phantom experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the HER-NIRF system. The results show that the distribution of DMSO can be visualized in the wide-field reflection geometry. One of the main purposes of the DMSO is to act as a carrier for other drugs, enhancing their effects by facilitating skin penetration. Understanding the solubility and permeability of drugs in vivo is very important in drug discovery and development. Hence, this HER-NIRF technique has great potential to advance the utilization of the therapeutic agent DMSO by mapping its distribution via the solvatochromic shift of ICG. By customizing the operational wavelength range, this system can be applied to any other fluorophores in the near-infrared region and utilized for a wide variety of drug delivery studies.
