259. Controlled Sol–Gel Transitions of Metal–Organic Membrane-Enveloped Cellulose Nanofibrils via Metal Coordination in Aqueous Media

Abstract

We report a metal coordination-driven sol–gel transition system where cellulose nanofibrils are enveloped by a rationally designed metal–organic membrane (MOM) in an aqueous medium. Specifically, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized bacterial cellulose (TOBC) is encapsulated within an MOM comprising Zn2+and the chelator phytic acid (PA), denoted TOBCMOM. Using the DLVO theory, we elucidate how tuning the metal ion valence in TOBCMOMmodulates the sol–gel transition by controlling interfibrillar attractive forces. Notably, TOBCMOMfluids exhibit relaxation times consistent with the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts (KWW) function. Significantly, we demonstrate reversible, sustainable sol–gel transitions in TOBCMOMunder stepwise mechanical strain. This facile approach enables rheological tailoring of aqueous media, promising for the development of advanced stimuli-responsive smart fluids for applications in cosmetics, food science, and pharmaceutical formulations.

260. Monodisperse Microshell Structured Gelatin Microparticles for Temporary Chemoembolization

Abstract

Embolization is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure that deliberately blocks a blood vessel. Although several embolic particles have been commercialized, their much wider applications have been hampered owing mainly to particle size variation and uncontrollable degradation kinetics. Herein we introduce a microfluidic approach to fabricate highly monodisperse gelatin microparticles (GMPs) with a microshell structure. For this purpose, we fabricate uniform gelatin emulsion precursors using a microfluidic technique and consecutively cross-link them by inbound diffusion of glutaraldehyde from the oil continuous phase to the suspending gelatin precursor droplets. A model micromechanic study, carried out in an artificial blood vessel, demonstrates that the extraordinary degradation kinetics of the GMPs, which stems from the microshell structure, enables controlled rupturing while exhibiting drug release under temporary chemoembolic conditions

261. Nanofluid Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Hydrophobically Associative Zwitterionic Polymer-Coated Silica Nanoparticles

Abstract

Intense interest has been shown in the development of “smart nanofluids” because they can dramatically change their flow properties in complex fluid systems. We introduce a robust and straightforward approach to develop a smart nanofluid system, in which associative silica nanoparticles (ASNPs) were incorporated to regulate their flow properties in rock pores. ASNPs were synthesized by covalently coating a hydrophobically associative hygroscopic zwitterionic poly[2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-co-divinylbenzene (DVB)] shell layer on 20 nm sized silica nanoparticles (NPs) by surface-mediated living radical polymerization. The essence of our approach is to copolymerize DVB, which endows the polymer shell of ASNPs with a weak long-range hydrophobic attraction. This leads to the favorable formation of a wedge film as a result of structural disjoining pressure. This wedge film made the oil adsorbed on the rock surface more dewettable, thus enhancing the efficiency of oil recovery. As a result of this unique behavior, the ASNP nanofluid developed in this study remarkably improved the fluidity of complex oil fluids; ∼5 vol % oil recovery enhancement and ∼0.3 psi pressure reduction were also achieved in comparison to neat nanofluid controls.

262. Three Essays on Equalization Transfers in a Fiscal Federalism

Abstract

This doctoral thesis contains three essays on equalization transfers in a fiscal federalism. In Chapter One, we study the impact of equalization transfers in a fiscal federalism on the policies of the regional governments. This chapter presents a dynamic general equilibrium model of a fiscal federalism in which two asymmetric regions provide their residents with non-productive public expenditures (a flow) and public capital (a stock). In our model, each regional government behaves strategically in choosing its policies to maximize the discounted welfare of its own residents, under the equalization transfer scheme. Our analysis indicates that the the tax on the use of the private capital input is equal to zero in the steady state. In addition, we observe that the only change induced by the equalization transfer scheme is an increase in the non-productive public expenditures in less-endowed region (Quebec) with an offsetting fall in the non-productive public expenditures in more-endowed region (Ontario). The results of the numerical exercise we carry out also suggest that an equalization scheme in a federal state lowers the welfare gap between a rich and a poor region. In Chapter Two, we investigate how the equalization transfer formula is determined and how the equalization transfer program affects a region’s policies. This chapter presents a political economy model of equalization payments in a fiscal federalism in which asymmetric regional governments, who care about the welfare of its own residents, lobby the (incumbent) federal government, who takes into consideration both the welfare of the federation and the political support it receives from the states when allocating equalization transfers. It is shown that if the federal government allows politics to distort its economic policy it actively implements an equalization transfer program that is different from the one it would implement if it behaved like a benevolent dictator. The equalization transfer scheme implemented by the federal government induces a fall in the investment of public capital in both regions, and if the political power of the poor region is sufficiently higher than that of the rich province, then the equalization transfer scheme induces a higher level of the non-productive public good in the poor region than in the rich region. A numerical example is provided to illustrate this result. Chapter Three presents a model of equalization transfers in a federation in which each regional government has private information on its own technology for public service delivery. The aim of the federal government is to design an equalization transfer scheme that is Bayesian incentive compatible and satisfies the interim participation constraint in order to achieve the goal of providing residents of a poor region with at least a certain level of utility without imposing an excessive burden on the giving region. We show that the equalization transfers allow the recipient region to raise its private consumption above the level it would have attained in the absence of equalization transfers because some of the transfer is allocated to raise private consumption. Furthermore, it is shown that the equalization transfers are also lower if the federal government can observe the type of the poor region.

286. Randomized controlled trial of steroid-soaked absorbable calcium alginate nasal packing following endoscopic sinus surgery.

Abstract

Objectives/hypothesis: To evaluate the potential efficacy of steroid-soaked, absorbable calcium alginate nasal packing following endoscopic sinus surgery.Study Design: Prospective, randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled trial.Methods: Twenty-two patients (44 nostrils) who had chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps underwent bilateral endoscopic sinus surgery. Only those with an intersinus difference in Lund-Mackay severity score of 1 or less were included. In each patient, one randomly selected nostril was packed with calcium alginate soaked with 2 mL of triamcinolone (40 mg/mL) (triamcinolone group), whereas the contralateral nostril received an identical packing soaked in 2 mL of normal saline (saline group). Two independent investigators blinded to the packing allocation scored the surgical field using the validated Perioperative Sinus Endoscopy (POSE) scores 1, 4, and 8 weeks after surgery.Results: All 44 nostrils were analyzed; the Lund-Mackay scores did not differ significantly between the groups before surgery. Eight weeks after surgery, the total POSE scores were significantly lower in the triamcinolone group (P = .014). The POSE scoring parameters were then compared between groups, and the following variables were significantly different: middle turbinate synechiae with the lateral wall (P = .037), polypoid degeneration of the ethmoid cavity (P = .006), and sphenoid sinus severity (P = .036).Conclusions: This study demonstrated that steroid-soaked, absorbable nasal packing can be used to enhance wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery and to prevent polypoid changes in the nasal mucosa.Level Of Evidence: 1b. Abstract

• Controlled rheology of hyaluronic acid (HA) solutions was achieved by using attractive polymeric micelles (APMs). • The unique rheological behavior of gel-type HA solutions stemmed from APM-mediated particulate crosslinking. • Manipulation of the electrostatic interaction between APMs and HAs enabled development of a promising hydrogel rheology controller. Herein, we report a facile but straightforward way to control the rheological properties of hyaluronic acid (HA) solutions by taking advantage of the interchain association of electrostatically attractive polymeric micelles (APMs). For this, we synthesized an amphiphilic triblock copolymer, poly(2-aminoethyl methacrylate)- block -poly(3-caprolactone)- block -poly(2-aminoethyl methacrylate) (PAMA- b -PCL- b -PAMA), via atomic transfer radical polymerization and co-assembled it with amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)- block -poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEO- b -PCL) to produce APMs with cationic charges. The incorporation of the APMs into a gel-type HA solution not only readily transitioned the viscous flow to elastic flow but also easily led to the deformation of the gel microstructure in response to the shear rate, which is comparable to the case of a linear HA solution. We identified that the unique rheological behavior of the gel-type HA solutions stemmed from the APM-mediated particulate crosslinking. Finally, we demonstrated that the fine tuning of the interchain association by manipulation of the electrostatic interaction between APMs and HA molecules enabled the diversification of the rheological properties of HA solutions, making this system a promising hydrogel rheology controller. 288. Effective Suppression of Oxidative Stress on Living Cells in Hydrogel Particles Containing a Physically Immobilized WS2Radical Scavenger

Abstract

We report a tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheet-immobilized hydrogel system that can inhibit oxidative stress on living cells. First, we fabricated a highly stable suspension of WS2nanosheets as a radical scavenger by enveloping them with the amphiphilic poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) copolymer (PCL-b-PEO) during in situ liquid exfoliation in aqueous medium. After the PCL-b-PEO-enveloped WS2nanosheets were embedded in three types of hydrogel systems, including carrageenan gum/locust bean gum bulk hydrogels, physically cross-linked alginate microparticles, and covalently cross-linked PEG hydrogel microparticles, they retained their characteristic optical properties. Intriguingly, the WS2nanosheet-immobilized hydrogel particles exhibited sustainable radical scavenging performance without any deterioration in the original activity of the WS2nanosheets, even after repeated use. This implies that the hydrogen atoms dissociated from the chalcogen of the WS2nanosheets effectively scavenged free radicals through the hydrogel mesh. Because of this unique behavior, the coexistence of the WS2nanosheets with living cells in the hydrogel matrix improved cell viability up to 40%, which demonstrates that the WS2nanosheets can suppress oxidative stress on living cells.
