Abstract

Aufgabenstellung des Vorhabens Mit dem Vorhaben wurde das Stipendienprogramm des Otto-Schmidt-Labors für Polar- und Meeresforschung (OSL) „Umweltsysteme im Umbruch“ durchgeführt. Das Stipendienprogramm hat die Qualifizierung und Förderung von russischen Nachwuchswissenschaftlern auf dem Gebiet der Polar- und Meeresforschung unterstützt und laufende Vorhaben im Rahmen der Fachvereinbarung zur Zusammenarbeit auf dem Gebiet der Meeres- und Polarforschung zwischen dem russischen Ministerium für Bildung und Wissenschaft (Minobrnauki) und dem Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) wissenschaftlich flankiert (Abb. 1). Übergeordnet wurden folgende Ziele gesetzt: • Nachwuchsförderung • Weiterführende fächer- und projektübergreifende Auswertung von Forschungsergebnissen der bilateralen Vorhaben • Förderung der Wissenschaftskooperation zwischen Russland und Deutschland. Abb. 1: Während der deutsch-russischen TRANSDRIFT-Expeditionen führen OSL-Stipendiaten ozeanographische Messungen durch (links) und nehmen Proben für meereschemische Studien (rechts) im Rahmen ihrer Projekte. Die Stipendiaten, die sich mit aktuellen Themen wie dem globalen Klimawandel befassen, werten das Daten- und Probenmaterial am OSL in St. Petersburg aus.

Abstract

Fifty young researchers from 14 countries met in St. Petersburg, Russia, to learn about the latest methods used in permafrost research and engineering and to discuss future plans to address climate change issues in permafrost areas. This workshop was an official International Polar Year (IPY) event organized jointly by the Otto Schmidt Laboratory for Polar and Marine Sciences (OSL) in St. Petersburg, the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN), and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS). The workshop provided insights into the latest techniques and methods used in permafrost research in fields as diverse as permafrost modeling, investigations of mountain ice segregation, bubbling from thermokarst lakes, and submarine permafrost detection. It brought together experts to provide young investigators with a multidisciplinary and cross-border perspective on permafrost research, a much needed approach in a discipline marked by strong research history yet strongly entangled within national borders. Abstract

There is growing concern about the rapidity and extent of climate change in recent decades in the Arctic. The changes already evident in the Arctic, such as the cyclonic shift in the distribution of Atlantic and Pacific water masses, atmospheric pressure and winds, as well as the thinning and retreat of the sea ice, will be felt first and most dramatically around the circum-Arctic shelves, which comprise nearly 50% of the area of the Arctic Ocean. In this context, the Laptev Sea and its Siberian hinterland are of particular interest because of their distance both from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. River discharge into the Laptev Sea constitutes a key source for the Arctic freshwater input, and it generates a shallow brackish layer on top of the halocline. The shallow Laptev Sea shelf is a major area of sea-ice production that links the Siberian shelves of the Arctic Ocean with the Nordic seas. During the Last Glacial Maximum, most of these shelves were above sea level and developed thick permafrost sequences; today they are submarine, after having experienced the postglacial late Pleistocene and Holocene transgression. The history of the submarine permafrost and its modern state of decay are largely unknown.

Abstract

For offshore constructions the knowledge on sediment transport dynamics is essential and the quantification of suspended particulate matter (SPM) is of major importance. The Laptev Sea shelf is one of the largest Siberian shelf seas and ice-covered for about nine months a year. In order to use indirect measuring devices for the quantification of SPM concentration on the Laptev Sea shelf, optical (turbidity meter) and acoustic (ADCP; Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) backscatter sensors were compared to assess their potential for the investigation of SPM dynamics in an arctic environment. To estimate SPM concentrations from optical backscatter signals, these were converted using the linear relation between the backscatter signals and SPM concentrations derived from water samples. Applying the theoretical interaction of sound in the water with SPM the acoustic backscatter signals were transformed adapting a previously established approach. SPM concentrations estimated from the backscattered signals of both sensors showed a close similarity to SPM concentrations obtained from filtered water samples. While the ADCP offers distinct advantages over the turbidity meter in that it allows measurement of the complete concentration profile, bottom location, and currents, co-deployment of both sensors are recommended for improved SPM measurements.

Abstract

BMBF-Verbundvorhaben System Laptev-See: Prozessstudien zur Dynamik des Permafrostes in der Laptev-See : Abschlussbericht. Förderkennzeichen: 03G0589, Laufzeit: 1.7.2003 bis 31.8.2006. Im Rahmen des deutsch-russischen Verbundvorhabens „System Laptev-See: Prozessstudien zur Dynamik des Permafrostes in der Laptev-See“ wurden fächerübergreifende Studien über das Vorkommen, die Bildung sowie die Auf- und Abbauprozesse des submarinen Permafrostes in der Laptev-See (sibirische Arktis) durchgeführt, um die Bedeutung permafrostgebundener Gashydrate und Treibhausgase im globalen Kohlenstoffkreislauf und im Klimasystem einzuschätzen. Erstmals wurden Bohrungen im Küstenbereich der westlichen Laptev-See abgeteuft und Temperaturfelder im Permafrost erfasst sowie die Feinstrukturen von submarinen Permafrostabfolgen seismisch vermessen. An Sedimentkernen und Bohrungen wurden mikrobiologische, sedimentologische, sedimentphysikalische, geochemische, biostratigraphische und paläontologische Untersuchungen durchgeführt. Die jahreszeitliche Variabilität von Temperatur und Strömung in der Laptev-See wurde mit Meeresbodenobservatorien über einen Zeitraum von einem Jahr aufgezeichnet. Insgesamt wurden drei Schiffs- und vier Landexpeditionen sowie drei Arbeitstreffen durchgeführt. Die Auswertung und Interpretation der Ergebnisse erfolgte in Abstimmung mit den Forschungsarbeiten am Otto-Schmidt-Labor für Polar- und Meeresforschung (St. Petersburg). Mit dem Arbeitsansatz des Verbundvorhabens wurden neue Datensätze über die Geschichte des Permafrostes sowie das aktuelle Umweltgeschehen in der sibirischen Arktis erhoben. Dadurch konnten neue Einblicke in das Ablagerungsmilieu von submarinem Permafrost und in die Stadien der Permafrostentwicklung gewonnen werden.
