Abstract: The antimicrobial efficiency of reactive species-based control strategies is significantly affected by the dynamics of reactive species in the biological environment. Atmospheric-pressure nonthermal plasma is an ionized gas in which various reactive species are produced. The various levels of antimicrobial activity may result from the dynamic interaction of the plasma-generated reactive species with the environment. However, the nature of the interaction between plasma and environments is poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the influence of the ionic strength of surrounding solutions (environment) on the antimicrobial activity of plasma in relation to the plasma-generated reactive species using a model filamentous fungus, Neurospora crassa. Our data revealed that the presence of sodium chloride (NaCl) in the background solution attenuated the deleterious effects of plasma on germination, internal structure, and genomic DNA of fungal spores. The protective effects of NaCl were not explained exclusively by pH, osmotic stability, or the level of reactive species in the solution. These were strongly associated with the ionic strength of the background solution. The presence of ions reduced plasma toxicity, which might be due to a reduced access of reactive species to fungal spores, and fungal spores were inactivated by plasma in a background fluid of nonionic osmolytes despite the low level of reactive species. Our results suggest that the surrounding environment may affect the behavior of reactive species, which leads to different biological consequences regardless of their quantity. Background and Aim: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of biliary epithelial cells (BECs) plays major roles in many cholangiopathies. This study evaluated whether EMT of BECs has a role in hepatolithiasis-induced biliary fibrosis and types of BECs that are involved. Methods: The expression of EMT-related proteins and epidermal growth factor receptor was evaluated by immunohistochemistry of liver tissues from 102 patients with hepatolithiasis, 32 patients with post-hepatitis cirrhosis, and 48 normal livers. Antibodies against E-cadherin, β-catenin, and cytokeratin were used to identify epithelial cells and antibodies against vimentin, S100A4, podoplanin, and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were used to identify mesenchymal cells. The relationship between clinical and histological parameters and immunohistochemistry findings in BECs, and the surrounding stroma were evaluated. Results: Loss of E-cadherin and acquisition of S100A4 and vimentin were observed in BECs. In all BECs, cytokeratin and β-catenin expression were unchanged, while podoplanin and α-SMA were not expressed. Although hepatic fibrosis was more severe in post-hepatitis cirrhosis, EMT of BECs was more widespread in hepatolithiasis. In hepatolithiasis, EMT-related proteins were more highly expressed in small bile ducts than in medium or large bile ducts. Their expression was associated with the severity of biliary fibrosis and the expressions of epidermal growth factor receptor. Expression of α-SMA in fibroblasts from the portal space was closely linked to pathological changes in small bile ducts and EMT-related protein expressions in BECs. Conclusions: Proliferating cholangiocytes that form small bile ducts may contribute to cholangiopathies in hepatolithiasis through an EMT-like phenomenon or through interactions with stromal myofibroblasts. Circulating cell-free microRNAs (miRNAs) are potential cancer biomarkers. The aim of this study was to identify miRNAs that are differentially expressed between benign pleural effusion (BPE) and lung adenocarcinoma-associated malignant pleural effusion (LA-MPE). The expression level of cell-free miRNA was investigated in 107 patients with pleural effusion. Microarrays were used to screen 160 miRNAs in a discovery set comprising 20 effusion samples (ten BPEs and ten LA-MPEs). Real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to validate the profiling results obtained for the discovery set and those obtained for a validation set comprising 42 BPEs and 45 LA-MPEs. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the identified miRNAs and other common tumor markers, such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cytokeratin fragment (CYFRA) 21-1. Microarray profiling showed that miR-198 was significantly downregulated in LA-MPE compared with BPE ( p = 0.002). The miRNA microarray analysis results were confirmed by qRT-PCR ( p < 0.001) using the validation set. The AUCs for miR-198, CEA and CYFRA 21-1 in the validation set were 0.887, 0.898 and 0.836, respectively. The diagnostic performance of miR-198 was comparable with that of CEA, but better than that of CYFRA 21-1. The AUC for all three markers combined was 0.926 (95% confidence interval, 0.843-0.973) with a sensitivity of 89.2% and a specificity of 85.0%. Nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches have received widespread attention as promising candidates in the drive to surmount the physical limitations currently faced by complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. The NEM switch has demonstrated superior characteristics including quasi-zero leakage behaviour, excellent density capability and operation in harsh environments. However, an unacceptably high operating voltage (4-20 V) has posed a major obstacle in the practical use of the NEM switch in low-power integrated circuits. To utilize the NEM switch widely as a core device component in ultralow power applications, the operation voltage needs to be reduced to 1 V or below. However, sub-1 V actuation has not yet been demonstrated because of fabrication difficulties and irreversible switching failure caused by surface adhesion. Here, we report the sub-1 V operation of a NEM switch through the introduction of a novel pipe clip device structure and an effective air gap fabrication technique. This achievement is primarily attributed to the incorporation of a 4-nm-thick air gap, which is the smallest reported so far for a NEM switch generated using a 'top-down' approach. Our structure and process can potentially be utilized in various nanogap-related applications, including NEM switch-based ultralow-power integrated circuits, NEM resonators, nanogap electrodes for scientific research and sensors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the bioconversion products of Oenanthe javanica extract fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (OEFL) on relieving hangovers and improving liver function. In addition, the bioactive substance of the OEFL, which alleviates hangover and ethanol-induced liver damage, was identified and its bioactive property was verified through in vivo experiments. In major substances analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography, OEFL produced 9.5-fold higher p-coumaric acid than the O. Javanica extract (OE). In addition, considering that quinic acid, which is not present in the OE, was produced in the OEFL it was confirmed that chlorogenic acid was decomposed into quinic acid by bioconversion. In the in vivo experiment using Sprague-Dawley rats, the OEFL and p-coumaric acid diets reduced blood ethanol, acetaldehyde, GPT, and ALP concentrations, increasing blood albumin concentrations compared to ethanol-administered groups, demonstrating that OEFL and p-coumaric acid, the main substance in the OEFL, improved ethanol-induced liver damage. Furthermore, the OEFL and its main bioactive substance, p-coumaric acid, alleviated liver fibrosis by downregulating TGF-β, SMAD-2, SMAD-4, α-SMA, and upregulating MMP-1. Therefore, OEFL is expected to be used as a functional food or pharmaceutical material as it has been confirmed to effectively relieve hangovers, prevent liver damage, and delay liver fibrosis in ethanol-induced liver damages. We aimed to investigate the repeatability of various corneal measurements according to topographical location in the entire cornea measured by dual rotating Scheimpflug-Placido camera and to explore the differences in repeatability between patients with mild dry eye and those with normal eyes. In both the normal and dry eye groups, divided based on BUT or the height of the tear film, there were no statistically significant differences in the ratio of unacceptable variation (RUV) and ICC. The consistency of the examination of the anterior and posterior refractive values and corneal thickness according to the corneal location, measured three times repeatedly using the Galilei anterior segment camera, was high. There was no difference based on the height of the tear film or the tear film break-up time. However, caution is needed when interpreting the values of the anterior corneal refractive values, as there can be changes of more than 0.5D within 3 mm of the central area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A trigate FinFET with a charge trap gate dielectric is demonstrated for high-speed and long retention memory applications. For a capacitor-less dynamic memory cell, a nitride layer is utilized as a charge storage node and it is directly formed on a silicon channel. In addition, novel gate-stacks allow high-speed and write processes under low voltage WITH remarkably endurable operation of up to 10^12 cycles. The use of NF3 is significantly increasing every year. However, NF3 is a greenhouse gas with a very high global warming potential. Therefore, the development of a material to replace NF3 is required. F3NO is considered a potential replacement to NF3. In this study, the characteristics and cleaning performance of the F3NO plasma to replace the greenhouse gas NF3 were examined. Etching of SiO2 thin films was performed, the DC offset of the plasma of both gases (i.e., NF3 and F3NO) was analyzed, and a residual gas analysis was performed. Based on the analysis results, the characteristics of the F3NO plasma were studied, and the SiO2 etch rates of the NF3 and F3NO plasmas were compared. The results show that the etch rates of the two gases have a difference of 95% on average, and therefore, the cleaning performance of the F3NO plasma was demonstrated, and the potential benefit of replacing NF3 with F3NO was confirmed. Abstract: Biodegradable porous magnesium (Mg) with hydroxyapatite (HA) coating suitable for biomedical applications was fabricated. A blend of Mg and NaCl particles was sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS), and then the NaCl was dissolved to obtain a porous structure. Different levels of porosity (50%, 60% and 70%) were achieved by adjusting the volume fraction of NaCl, while preserving high pore interconnectivity with a large pore size of~240μm. In addition, a dense HA coating layer comprised of needle-shaped HA crystals was formed on the surface of the porous Mg by treatment in an aqueous solution. Both bare and HA-coated porous Mg specimens with a porosity of 60% exhibited ductile behavior under compressive loading and similar levels of ultimate compressive strength (~15MPa). Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are promising materials for biodegradable drug-eluting stent applications, but their rapid corrosion remains a major challenge for clinical practice. Considerable efforts have been made to develop an efficient surface coating that can provide higher Mg stent corrosion resistance, sustained drug-delivery capability, and vascular compatibility. Herein, we introduce poly(ether imide) (PEI) and poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid) (PLGA) as surface coating polymers for WE43 Mg-alloy stent. Using a sequential spray-coating method, we developed a novel asymmetric stent coating comprising an inner surface coated with a PEI single layer and outer/side surfaces coated with sirolimus-loaded PLGA/PEI double layers. PEI coating layer has excellent adhesiveness to WE43 surface and considerably improves WE43 corrosion resistance and in vitro endothelial cell compatibility. PLGA/PEI double coating layer ensures a low release rate of sirolimus and stable surface morphology during drug-release process. Only vascular smooth muscle cells are directly affected by sirolimus owing to the asymmetric geometry of PLGA/PEI double coating, which has a satisfactory anti-proliferation effect. These results indicate that the developed asymmetrically PEI- and PLGA/PEI-coated WE43 stents have significant potential for achieving enhanced re-endothelialization and suppressed in-stent restenosis in vascular stent applications. Poly(L-lactic) acid (PLLA) is among the most promising polymers for bone fixation, repair, and tissue engineering due to its biodegradability and relatively good mechanical strength. Despite these beneficial characteristics, its poor bioactivity often requires incorporation of bioactive ceramic materials. A bioresorbable composite made of PLLA and hydroxyapatite (HA) may improve biocompatibility but typically causes deterioration in mechanical properties, and bioactive coatings inevitably carry a risk of coating delamination. Therefore, in this study, we embedded micropatterned HA on the surface of PLLA to improve bioactivity while eliminating the risk of HA delamination. An HA pattern was successfully embedded in a PLLA matrix without degeneration of the matrix's mechanical properties, thanks to a transfer technique involving conversion of Mg to HA. Furthermore, patterned HA/PLLA's biological response outperformed that of pure PLLA. In this cross-sectional study, we examined age-related changes in the retinal vessels of 100 healthy participants, aged from 5 to 80 years, and divided into four groups (G1, under 20 years of age; G2, from 20 to 39 years of age; G3, from 40 to 59 years of age; G4, age 60 years or older). All subjects underwent swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA). The vascular density (VD) of the superficial (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris (CCP) were measured using OCTA. The vascular density of each capillary layer, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness, retinal thickness (RT), and choroidal thickness (CT) were compared between age groups. Most OCT variables were correlated with OCTA variables. The FAZ area; VD of the SCP, DCP, and CCP; GC-IPL thickness; RT; and CT showed significant difference (p < 0.001) between G1 + G2 and G3 + G4, except for central GC-IPL thickness (p = 0.14) and central RT (p = 0.25). To investigate the incidence and risk factors for neovascular glaucoma (NVG) after vitrectomy in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Patients were categorized into two subgroups based on their treatment regimen: one group received vitrectomy only (Group 1), while the other received combined phacovitrectomy (Group 2). A comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the distinguishing characteristics of the two groups. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to determine the incidence of NVG following surgery. Furthermore, multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazards model was conducted to identify the risk factors associated with the development of NVG after surgery. A total of 484 eyes of 484 patients were included in the study. When comparing Group 1 with Group 2, a significant difference was observed in the occurrence of NVG. In Group 1, there were 10 cases of NVG (3.9%), whereas 29 cases of NVG occurred in Group 2 (12.71%). Male sex, high preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), and combined phacovitrectomy were found to be associated with the occurrence of NVG following phacovitrectomy. Higher creatinine levels had a protective effect in preventing the development of NVG. Male sex, high preoperative IOP, and combined phacovitrectomy were associated with a high incidence of NVG. Purpose. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) and inflammasomes in diabetes‐induced retinal cells and to determine their role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods. To establish diabetes‐induced cell models, ARPE‐19 cells were treated with high glucose. The expression levels of five miRNAs (miR‐185, miR‐17, miR‐20a, miR‐15a, and miR‐15b) were measured in high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells using real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Western blotting was performed to measure inflammasome expression in cellular models. miR‐17 was selected as the target miRNA, and inflammasome expression was measured following the transfection of an miR‐17 mimic into high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells. Results. In high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells, miRNA expression was substantially downregulated, whereas that of inflammasome components was significantly increased. Following the transfection of the miR‐17 mimic into high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells, the levels of inflammasome components were significantly decreased. Conclusions. This study investigated the relationship between miRNAs and inflammasomes in diabetes‐induced cells using high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells. These findings suggested that miR‐17 suppresses inflammasomes, thereby reducing the subsequent inflammatory response and indicating that miRNAs and inflammasomes could serve as new therapeutic targets for DR. Natural killer (NK) cells are crucial in the innate immune response and show promise in cancer immunotherapy, but face challenges in activation and targeted gene delivery. In this study, bifunctional lipid nanoparticles (DLNPs) containing 1,2‐dioleoyl‐3‐trimethylammonium‐propane (DOTAP), designed to bolster the antitumor efficacy of chimeric antigen receptor‐modified NK (CAR‐NK) cells by facilitating activation and efficient CAR mRNA delivery are introduced. The DLNPs, created by functionalizing FDA‐approved LNP compositions, exhibit excellent mRNA encapsulation and colloidal stability. NK cells primed with DLNPs show increased cytotoxicity against cancer cells via extracellular signal‐regulated kinase/Mitogen‐Activated Protein Kinase pathway modulation and mitochondrial dynamics changes. The DLNPs enter NK cells predominantly through clathrin‐mediated endocytosis, boosting mRNA delivery and overcoming NK cells' resistance to genetic manipulation. CAR‐NK cells targeting glypican‐3, prevalent in hepatocellular carcinoma, show significant therapeutic effects in an orthotopic mouse model. These findings underscore the potential of DLNPs in enhancing CAR‐NK cell therapy for solid tumors, marking a significant stride in NK cell‐based cancer immunotherapy and broadening prospects for NK cell‐related disease interventions. In the biological neural network, the learning process is achieved through massively parallel synaptic connections between neurons that can be adjusted in an analog manner. Recent developments in emerging synaptic devices and their networks can emulate the functionality of a biological neural network, which will be the fundamental building block for a neuromorphic computing architecture. However, on-chip implementation of a large-scale artificial neural network is still very challenging due to unreliable analog weight modulation in current synaptic device technology. Here, we demonstrate a binarized neural network (BNN) based on a gate-all-around silicon nanosheet synaptic transistor, where reliable digital-type weight modulation can contribute to improve the sustainability of the entire network. BNN is applied to three proof-of-concept examples: (1) handwritten digit classification (MNIST dataset), (2) face image classification (Yale dataset), and (3) experimental 3 × 3 binary pattern classifications using an integrated synaptic transistor network (total 9 × 9 × 2 162 cells) through a supervised online training procedure. The results consolidate the feasibility of binarized neural networks and pave the way toward building a reliable and large-scale artificial neural network by using more advanced conventional digital device technologies. In this study, we generated water and phosphate buffer treated with microwave plasma-generated gas in which the major component was nitric oxide (PGNO), and investigated the efficiency of the treated water and buffer in fertilization and sanitation. Real time NO level monitored by an electrode sensor was linearly increased over PGNO injection time, and removal of O2 from liquid before PGNO injection accelerated NO assimilation into liquids. Residual NO was still present 16 h after PGNO injection was stopped. H2O2, NO2−, and NO3− were also detected in PGNO-treated liquids. Spinach plants applied with 10 and 30 times diluted PGNO-treated water and 0.5 mM phosphate buffer showed slightly higher height and dry weight than control after 5 weeks. Plants grown with 10 and 30 times diluted PGNO-treated water exhibited the increased tolerance to water deficiency. Significant anti-microbial activity within 1 h was observed in un-diluted and in half-diluted PGNO-treated water and 0.5 mM phosphate buffer. Our results suggest that water or phosphate buffer containing NO, H2O2, NO2−, and NO3− can be produced by PGNO treatment, and that PGNO-treated water or buffer can be used as a potential fertilizer enhancing plant vitality with sanitation effect. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of haemodialysis on perfused vessel density, choroidal thickness (CT), and retinal thickness in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). We studied twenty-nine eyes of 29 ESRD patients by ophthalmologic examination and SS-OCTA before and after haemodialysis. The colour-coded perfusion density maps were generated and perfused vessel density was calculated. Changes in systemic and other ocular parameters such as retinal and choroidal thickness were measured and analysed. Total perfused vessel density decreased significantly after haemodialysis in the choriocapillaris; it was not significantly different in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and the deep capillary plexus (DCP). Total CT decreased significantly, but total retinal thickness was not significantly different. There was no significant correlation between choriocapillaris perfused vessel density and CT. The reduction in choriocapillaris perfused vessel density correlated with the decrease in systolic and mean arterial blood pressures. The decrease in CT correlated with the ultrafiltration volume. There were no significant systemic and ocular factors affecting change in retinal thickness and perfused vessel density of SCP and DCP. This is the first study to assess the effect of haemodialysis on blood flow changes using SS-OCTA; changes may be more prominent in the choroidal compared to the retinal layer. Purpose: To compare repeatability between SS-OCT and SD-OCT for measurement of macular, macular retinal nerve fiber (mRNFL), and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness in various retinal diseases. Methods: One hundred and fourteen eyes of 114 subjects were investigated. Seventy-eight eyes with retinal disease and 36 normal eyes underwent two consecutive measurements of macular, mRNFL, and GC-IPL thickness using SS-OCT and SD-OCT. The data were obtained using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) protocol. The eyes with retinal diseases were divided into three subgroups according to central macular thickness (CMT) for analysis. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated to determine the repeatability of OCT device. Results: In normal eyes, both OCT devices showed excellent repeatability of macula, mRNFL, and GC-IPL thickness measurements with high ICCs in all ETDRS subfields. In eyes with retinal disease, although SS-OCT showed better repeatability for inner retinal thickness measurements than SD-OCT, the overall ICCs were lower than those in normal eyes. In subgroup analysis, the ICCs in the low CMT group were lower than those in the normal and high CMT groups, particularly when using SD-OCT. Conclusions: Both OCT devices had comparable repeatability for retinal thickness measurement in normal eyes and eyes with retinal disease. However, the possibility of measurement error should be considered in eyes with a thin and atrophic retina. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
