Abstract Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been shown to play diverse biological functions in the progression of multiple diseases. However, the impacts of circRNAs on breast cancer (BC) progression remains unclear. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to investigate the role and mechanisms of a functional circRNA in BC metastasis and immune escape. Methods This study used a circRNA microarray and identified a novel circRNA hsa_circ_0067842. The validation and characteristics of hsa_circ_0067842 were investigated using qRT-PCR, sanger sequencing, RNase R treatment, actinomycin D treatment and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Gain- and loss-of-function assays were performed to evaluate the biological function of hsa_circ_0067842 in BC progression and immune escape. Mechanistically, the interaction between hsa_circ_0067842 and HuR was explored by RNA pull down, mass spectrometry (MS), subcellular component protein extraction and immunofluorescence (IF). The regulatory mechanisms of hsa_circ_0067842/HuR/CMTM6/PD-L1 axis were investigated by qRT-PCR, western blot, FISH, immunoprecipitation and rescue assays. Results The expression of hsa_circ_0067842 was upregulated in BC tissues and cells, which was found to be significantly associated with poor prognosis, regardless of other clinical covariates. Function assays showed that hsa_circ_0067842 promoted the migration and invasion capacities of BC cells. Moreover, co-culture experiment with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) showed that hsa_circ_0067842 played a role in the immune escape of BC cells. Mechanistically, our study showed that hsa_circ_0067842 interacted with HuR, affecting its nuclear translocation, thus enhancing the stability of CMTM6. CMTM6 not only enhances the migration and invasion ability of BC cells, but also affects the ubiquitination of PD-L1 and inhibits its degradation. Conclusion Collectively, our results demonstrated that hsa_circ_0067842 promoted BC progression through the HuR/CMTM6/PD-L1 axis, providing new insight and a potential target for BC prognosis and therapy.

Abstract Biochar modified by metal ions—particularly Mg—is typically used for the effective recovery of phosphorous. In this study, MgO-modified biochars were synthesized via the direct co-pyrolysis of MgO and raw materials such as rice straw, corn straw, Camellia oleifera shells, and branches from garden waste, which were labeled as MRS, MCS, MOT, and MGW, respectively. The resulting phosphate (PO) adsorption capacities and potential adsorption mechanisms were analyzed. The PO adsorption capacities of the biochars were significantly improved after the modification with MgO: MRS (24.71 ± 0.32 mg/g) > MGW (23.55 ± 0.46 mg/g) > MOT (15.23 ± 0.19 mg/g) > MCS (14.12 ± 0.21 mg/g). PO adsorption on the modified biochars was controlled by physical adsorption, precipitation, and surface inner-sphere complexation processes, although no electrostatic attraction was observed. Furthermore, PO adsorbed on modified biochars could be released under acidic, alkaline, and neutral conditions. The desorption efficiency of MRS was modest, indicating its suitability as a slow-release fertilizer. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Over the past century, Northern Hemisphere (NH) land monsoon rainfall (NHLMR) experienced significant decadal to multidecadal variations, mainly driven by an east–west sea surface temperature (SST) contrast over the Pacific (EWPC) and an interhemispheric North Atlantic–South Indian Ocean SST dipole (NAID). However, how the NHLMR’s decadal variation would vary and whether the oceanic forcing could continue to drive it in a warming world remain unexplored. Here, by analyzing 24 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models’ historical simulations and future projections, we show that the leading mode of decadal NHLMR will retain its nearly-uniform spatial pattern and representation of the NHLMR’s intensity. In the future, the significant periodicities of decadal NHLMR are shortened as emissions levels increase. The intensity of decadal NHLMR variation will experience a comprehensive decline under various emission scenarios, which may link to the weakened intensity of NAID and EWPC. Although the relationship between EWPC and decadal NHLMR is slightly weakened in the future, EWPC will remain a primary driver while NAID is no longer. The significant historical correlation between NAID and NHLMR is mainly attributed to the influence of increased anthropogenic aerosols emission. However, the NAID-NHLMR linkage would no longer exist owing to the decline of anthropogenic aerosol emission in the future.

Abstract Prostate cancer (PCa) is prevalent among older men and difficult to survive after metastasis. It is urgent to find new drugs and treatments. Several studies show that taraxasterol (TAX) has important anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-tumor effects. However, the function and mechanisms of TAX in PCa remain unclear. Here, we found that TAX could significantly suppress the viability and growth of androgen-independent PCa cells and down-regulate the expression of c-Myc and cyclin D1 in vitro. Mechanistically, PI3K/AKT signaling pathway was weakened and the expression of FGFR2 was reduced after TAX treatment in androgen-independent PCa cells. Moreover, TAX evidently inhibited the tumor growth in nude mice and the expression of c-Myc, cyclin D1, p-AKT and FGFR2 were down-regulated in xenograft tumor. These results indicate that TAX suppresses the proliferation of androgen-independent PCa cells via inhibiting the activation of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and the expression of FGFR2, which means TAX may be a novel anti-tumor agent for later PCa treatment.

Abstract The immune system can monitor tumor development, and DNA methylation is involved in the body’s immune response to tumors. In this work, we investigate whether DNA methylation alterations in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) could be used as markers for early detection of breast cancer (BC) from the perspective of tumor immune alterations. We identify four BC-specific methylation markers by combining Infinium 850 K BeadChips, pyrosequencing and targeted bisulfite sequencing. Based on the four methylation markers in PBMCs of BC, we develop an efficient and convenient multiplex methylation-specific quantitative PCR assay for the detection of BC and validate its diagnostic performance in a multicenter cohort. This assay was able to distinguish early-stage BC patients from normal controls, with an AUC of 0.940, sensitivity of 93.2%, and specificity of 90.4%. More importantly, this assay outperformed existing clinical diagnostic methods, especially in the detection of early-stage and minimal tumors.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of osimertinib for the treatment of leptomeningeal metastases (LM) from epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to aggregate the clinical outcomes of patients with LM from EGFR-mutant NSCLC treated with osimertinib. A comprehensive literature search for published and unpublished studies was implemented in April 2021 of PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and several international conference databases, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Meta-analysis of proportions was conducted to calculate the pooled rate of overall response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), one-year overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AEs). Results A total of eleven studies (five prospective and six retrospective) including 353 patients were included. The majority of patients (346/353, 98.0%) received osimertinib as ≥ 2nd-line treatment for LM, either at a dosage of 80 mg (161/353, 45.6%) or 160 mg (191/353, 54.1%). The pooled rates of ORR and DCR were 42% (95% CI 24% to 59%) and 93% (95% CI 88% to 97%), respectively. The pooled one-year OS rate was 59% (95% CI 53% to 65%) in 233 patients from five studies. The highest incidence of AEs of all grades was rash (53%), followed by diarrhea (45%), paronychia (35%), decreased appetite (35%), and dry skin (27%), based on data from four studies. Conclusions Our study highlighted and confirmed the meaningful efficacy and a manageable safety profile of osimertinib for the treatment of LM from EGFR-mutant advanced NSCLC.

The microstructural stability and property evolution of high-temperature titanium alloys under long-term high-temperature conditions has been a critical scientific issue in the field of advanced titanium alloys. In this work, we systematically investigated the precipitation behavior of silicides and ordered α2 phase, which are closely related to the microstructural stability of Ti65 high-temperature alloy, during thermal exposure at 650 °C for different periods of time. Furthermore, the effects of thermal exposure on mechanical properties were evaluated using room temperature and high temperature tensile tests, and subsequently, the correlation between the microstructural thermal stability and the mechanical characteristics was discussed. The results reveal that (Ti, Zr)6Si3 silicides initially precipitate within the residual β film and then start to precipitate in the α platelet. A large number of fine spherical α2 precipitates were formed inside the α platelet after a short thermal exposure. The number density of ordered α2 decreased significantly after 1000 h due to Ostwald ripening. The precipitation of silicides and ordered α2 phases during thermal exposure improves the tensile strength but deteriorates the ductility, and the room-temperature ductility is slightly restored due to α2 ripening after long-time thermal exposure. Ti65 high-temperature titanium alloy consistently maintains favorable room-temperature tensile properties throughout long-term thermal exposure.

Ammonium sulfate (AS) has been utilized in agriculture; however, there is a dearth of research on its application in maize cultivation subsequent to the implementation of nitrification inhibitors or coating treatments. This study aimed to analyze the impacts of various combinations of AS fertilizers on soil nutrients, plant nutrient uptake, yield, and fertilizer utilization efficiency in maize cultivation to establish an optimal and stabilized disposal method for AS. A completely randomized design was employed with five treatments (AU, the control using urea; AS, treatment using ammonium sulfate; ASN, treatment using ammonium sulfate with a nitrification inhibitor; ASG, treatment using oil-coated ammonium sulfate; and ASD, treatment using oil–humic acid-coated ammonium sulfate). The results show the following: (1) Compared with AU and AS, ASN, ASG, and ASD decreased the leaching rates of total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), and more residual N had accumulated in the soil. The first-order kinetic equation Nt = N0(1 − e−kt) could better fit the process of N accumulation and release, and the N-release rate constant was in the order of AU > CK > AS > ASG > ASN > ASD. (2) Compared with the AU and AS treatments, the plant dry weight, grain dry weight, spike width, spike length, and yields of maize increased by 8.85–11.08%, 12.98–14.15%, 2.95–3.52%, 5.50–5.65%, and 43.21–51.10%, respectively, under the ASG treatment. A path analysis revealed the main decision coefficient of the effective spike number on the maize yield. Furthermore, the accumulation levels of N, P, and K within above-ground plants significantly increased under the ASG treatment compared with those under the AU and AS treatments. N, P, and K partial factor productivity under the ASG treatment increased by 47.12%, 47.15%, and 73.40% on average, while grain N, P, and K balance increased by 50.45%, 47.10%, 55.61% on average, compared with the AU and AS treatments. Therefore, the ASG treatment exhibited the optimal slow-release effect on nutrients and achieved excellent performance in enhancing the production and efficiency of maize.

In order to cope with the failure of existing fault analysis schemes for AC/DC distribution networks with a high proportion of distributed generations, this paper proposes a fault characteristic analysis method for AC/DC distribution networks that considers the influence of distributed generation control strategies. Firstly, a transient model for the AC/DC distribution network connected to distributed generations is built. Then, the fault characteristics of the AC/DC distribution network in different stages, such as the capacitor discharge stage, inductive renewal stage, and steady state stage, is analyzed. Finally, detailed simulation analysis is conducted using PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the effectiveness of the developed scheme by the superior approximation performance between simulated curves and calculated curves.

The migration, proliferation, and apoptosis of trophoblastic cells play a crucial role in ensuring the effective preservation of pregnancy at the maternal–fetal interface. Any deviations in the structure and function of these cells might potentially result in the development of numerous pregnancy-related disorders, including missed abortion (MA). This study involved the examination of semaphorin 4A (SEMA4A) expression in missed abortion (n = 18) and normal early pregnancy (n = 18) villus. The findings of this study indicate a statistically significant decrease in the expression of SEMA4A in the villi of individuals diagnosed with missed abortion, as compared to the control group. The results of our vitro study showed that SEMA4A promoted the migration and proliferation of trophoblast cells and inhibited their apoptosis. Subsequent studies have shown that SEMA4A may be involved in regulating p-STAT3/STAT3, MMP9, bcl-2, and BAX levels. In summary, the findings of this study indicate a correlation between the decreased level of SEMA4A in chorionic villi and missed abortion. These results offer novel theoretical insights into the proper implantation and development of SEMA4A embryos at the maternal–fetal interface.

The management of brain tumors presents numerous challenges, despite the employment of multimodal therapies including surgical intervention, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Owing to the distinct location of brain tumors and the presence of the blood–brain barrier (BBB), these tumors exhibit considerable heterogeneity and invasiveness at the histological level. Recent advancements in hydrogel research for the local treatment of brain tumors have sought to overcome the primary challenge of delivering therapeutics past the BBB, thereby ensuring efficient accumulation within brain tumor tissues. This article elaborates on various hydrogel-based delivery vectors, examining their efficacy in the local treatment of brain tumors. Additionally, it reviews the fundamental principles involved in designing intelligent hydrogels that can circumvent the BBB and penetrate larger tumor areas, thereby facilitating precise, controlled drug release. Hydrogel-based drug delivery systems (DDSs) are posited to offer a groundbreaking approach to addressing the challenges and limitations inherent in traditional oncological therapies, which are significantly impeded by the unique structural and pathological characteristics of brain tumors.

This study focused on the start-up and operating characteristics of the endogenous partial denitrification (EPD) process with different carbon sources. Two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) with sodium acetate (SBR1#) and glucose (SBR2#) as carbon sources were operated under anaerobic/oxic (A/O) and anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A/A/O) modes successively for 240 d. The results showed that COD removal efficiency reached 85% and effluent COD concentrations were below 35 mg/L in both SBRs. The difference was that faster absorption and transformation of sodium acetate was achieved compared to glucose (COD removal rate (CRR) was 7.54 > 2.22 mgCOD/(L·min) in SBR1# compared to SBR2#). EPD could be started up with sodium acetate and glucose as carbon sources, respectively, and desirable high nitrite accumulations were both obtained at influent NO3−−N (NO3−-Ninf) increased from 20 to 40 mg/L with nitrate-to-nitrite transformation ratio (NTR) and specific NO3−-N deduction rate (rNa) of 88.4~90% and 2.41~2.38 mgN/(gVSS·h), respectively. However, at NO3−-N of 50~60 mg/L, both the NTR and rNa in SBR1# were higher compared to SBR2# (86.5% > 83.9% and 1.58 > 1.20 mgN/(gVSS·h), respectively). Hereafter, when NO3−-N was increased by 70~90 mg/L, lower NTR and rNa were observed in SBR1# than in SBR2# (72% and 78%, 1.16 and 1.32 mgN/(gVSS·h), respectively). Additionally, similar internal carbon transformations were observed to drive EPD for NO2−−N accumulation, especially for higher and faster carbon transformation with sodium acetate as carbon source compared to glucose. However, precise control of anoxic time as the peak point of nitrite (TNi,max) was still the key to achieve high NO2−−N accumulation.

Aiming at the interactive behavior of vehicles changing lanes in the intelligent network traffic environment, the relative position of vehicle, speed, acceleration, and steering angle are introduced to correct the molecular interaction potential, and the vehicle interaction potential model is established. The spatial distribution map of the vehicle interaction potential field under different motion states was drawn, and the changing law of the vehicle interaction potential field was described. By analyzing the longitudinal critical distance of the lane changing safe critical time, the expression of acceptable clearance for lane changing is defined, and the relationship between acceptable clearance and the speed and acceleration of the interactive vehicle is verified by simulation. Combined with the acceptable clearance of lane changing, a lane changing behavior model based on the vehicle interaction potential is established, and the situation of lane changing vehicles subjected to the interaction potential and potential field forces generated by the surrounding vehicles is analyzed, and the driving decision of lane changing vehicles under the action of different potential field forces is given. Compared with the molecular dynamics lane changing model and LS2015 lane changing model, the results show that the vehicle action potential lane changing model can effectively improve the running speed and stability of traffic flow. The research has theoretical significance for the lane changing behavior decisions of networked autonomous vehicles in the future.

Vegetation classification has always been the focus of remote sensing applications, especially for tropical regions with fragmented terrain, cloudy and rainy climates, and dense vegetation. How to effectively classify vegetation in tropical regions by using multi-spectral remote sensing with high resolution and red-edge spectrum needs to be further verified. Based on the experiment in Wenchang, Hainan, China, which is located in the tropical monsoon region, and combined with the ZY-1 02D 2.5 m fused images in January, March, July, and August, this paper discusses whether NDVI and four red-edge vegetation indices (VIs), CIre, NDVIre, MCARI, and TCARI, can promote vegetation classification and reduce the saturation. The results show that the schemes with the highest classification accuracies in all phases are those in which the red-edge VIs are involved, which suggests that the red-edge VIs can effectively contribute to the classification of vegetation. The maximum accuracy of the single phase is 86%, and the combined accuracy of the four phases can be improved to 92%. It has also been found that CIre and NDVIre do not reach saturation as easily as NDVI and MCARI in July and August, and their ability to enhance the separability between different vegetation types is superior to that of TCARI. In general, red-edge VIs can effectively promote vegetation classification in tropical monsoon regions, and red-edge VIs, such as CIre and NDVIre, have an anti-saturation performance, which can slow down the confusion between different vegetation types due to saturation.

The role of modified biochar in enhancing phosphorus (P) availability is gaining attention as an environmentally friendly approach to address soil P deficiency, a global agricultural challenge. Traditional phosphatic fertilizers, while essential for crop yield, are costly and environmentally detrimental owing to P fixation and leaching. Modified biochar presents a promising alternative with improved properties such as increased porosity, surface area, and cation exchange capacity. This review delves into the variability of biochar properties based on source and production methods and how these can be optimized for effective P adsorption. By adjusting properties such as pH levels and functional groups to align with the phosphate’s zero point of charge, we enhance biochar’s ability to adsorb and retain P, thereby increasing its bioavailability to plants. The integration of nanotechnology and advanced characterization techniques aids in understanding the structural nuances of biochar and its interactions with phosphorus. This approach offers multiple benefits: it enables farmers to use phosphorus more efficiently, reducing the need for traditional fertilizers and thereby minimizing environmental impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions and P leaching. This review also identifies existing research gaps and future opportunities for further biochar modifications. These findings emphasize the significant potential of modified biochar in sustainable agriculture.

Due to budget and sensor technology constraints, a single sensor cannot simultaneously provide observational images with both a high spatial and temporal resolution. To solve the above problem, the spatiotemporal fusion (STF) method was proposed and proved to be an indispensable tool for monitoring land surface dynamics. There are relatively few systematic reviews of the STF method. Bibliometrics is a valuable method for analyzing the scientific literature, but it has not yet been applied to the comprehensive analysis of the STF method. Therefore, in this paper, we use bibliometrics and scientific mapping to analyze the 2967 citation data from the Web of Science from 1991 to 2023 in a metrological manner, covering the themes of STF, data fusion, multi-temporal analysis, and spatial analysis. The results of the literature analysis reveal that the number of articles displays a slow to rapid increase during the study period, but decreases significantly in 2023. Research institutions in China (1059 papers) and the United States (432 papers) are the top two contributors in the field. The keywords “Sentinel”, “deep learning” (DL), and “LSTM” (Long Short-Term Memory) appeared most frequently in the past three years. In the future, remote sensing spatiotemporal fusion research can address more of the limitations of heterogeneous landscapes and climatic conditions to improve fused images’ accuracy.

The escalating concern regarding increasing air pollution and its impact on the health risks associated with PM2.5 in developing countries necessitates attention. Thus, this study utilizes the WRF-CMAQ model to simulate the effects of meteorological conditions on PM2.5 levels in Changchun, a typical city in China, during January 2017 and January 2020. Additionally, it introduces a novel health risk-based air quality index (NHAQI) to assess the influence of meteorological parameters and associated health risks. The findings indicate that in January 2020, the 2-m temperature (T2), 10-m wind speed (WS10), and planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) were lower compared to those in 2017, while air pressure exhibited a slight increase. These meteorological parameters, characterized by reduced wind speed, heightened air pressure, and lower boundary layer height—factors unfavorable for pollutant dispersion—collectively contribute to the accumulation of PM2.5 in the atmosphere. Moreover, the NHAQI proves to be more effective in evaluating health risks compared to the air quality index (AQI). The annual average decrease in NHAQI across six municipal districts from 2017 to 2020 amounts to 18.05%. Notably, the highest health risks are observed during the winter among the four seasons, particularly in densely populated areas. The pollutants contributing the most to the total excess risk (ERtotal) are PM2.5 (45.46%), PM10 (33.30%), and O3 (13.57%) in 2017, and PM2.5 (67.41%), PM10 (22.32%), and O3 (8.41%) in 2020. These results underscore the ongoing necessity for PM2.5 emission control measures while emphasizing the importance of considering meteorological parameters in the development of PM2.5 reduction strategies.

Upon a variety of environmental stresses, eukaryotic cells usually recruit translational stalled mRNAs and RNA-binding proteins to form cytoplasmic condensates known as stress granules (SGs), which minimize stress-induced damage and promote stress adaptation and cell survival. SGs are hijacked by cancer cells to promote cell survival and are consequently involved in the development of anticancer drug resistance. However, the design and application of chemical compounds targeting SGs to improve anticancer drug efficacy have rarely been studied. Here, we developed two types of SG inhibitory peptides (SIPs) derived from SG core proteins Caprin1 and USP10 and fused with cell-penetrating peptides to generate TAT-SIP-C1/2 and SIP-U1-Antp, respectively. We obtained 11 SG-inducing anticancer compounds from cell-based screens and explored the potential application of SIPs in overcoming resistance to the SG-inducing anticancer drug sorafenib. We found that SIPs increased the sensitivity of HeLa cells to sorafenib via the disruption of SGs. Therefore, anticancer drugs which are competent to induce SGs could be combined with SIPs to sensitize cancer cells, which might provide a novel therapeutic strategy to alleviate anticancer drug resistance.

Objective To determine the best collection time period of plasma which can be used for human COVID-19 immunoglobulin for intravenous injection through SARS-CoV-2-IgG change and neutralizing antibody distribution against different virus strain in representative mixed plasma before and after Omicron strain infection by ELISA and pseudovirus neutralization test. Methods An ELISA method for quantitative detection of SARS-CoV-2-IgG was established and its linear range,accuracy and precision was verified. SARS-CoV-2-IgG potency was detected in 25 convalescent plasma which were collected 20-40 days after confirmed Omicron infection, two groups of mixed plasma samples WP1 and WP2 were prepared according to the SARS-CoV-2-IgG results, and pseudovirus neutralization experiments with different virus strain (prototype strain, BA. 1,BA.2, BA.4/5, BF.7, BQ.1.1) were carried out to determine the distribution of neutralizing antibodies against different virus strain. SARS-CoV-2-IgG potency of representative mixed plasma collected from 14 plasma stations subordinate to the company before and after Omicron strain infection was detected, including Omicron convalescent plasma (OP) collected from different plasma stations from December 2022 to May 2023 and normal pool plasma (VN) feed in March 2023 which collected from March 2022 to December 2022. According to the results, the difference and the change rule with time of SARS-CoV-2-IgG before and after Omicron strain infection were analyzed. Results The linearity of SARS-CoV-2-IgG ranged from 6.25 to 200 EIU/mL, the accuracy in-batch ranged from 81.793% to 106.985%, the precision in-batch ranged from 1. 100% to 13.000%, and the total error in-batch ranged from 2.988% to 22.679%. The accuracy between batches ranged from 90.788%to 96.893%, the precision between batches ranged from 4.870% to 6.272%, and the total error between batches ranged from 9.192% to 15.399%. The results of pseudovirus neutralizing antibody showed that the potency of different virus strain neutralizing antibodies were in the order of prototype strain>BA.2>BA.4/5>BF.7≈ BQ.1.1>BA.1 and the correlation between WP1 and WP2 was high (Pearson r=0. 931 1, P=0.002 3) which indicated that the potency distribution of neutralizing antibodies of different virus strain in Omicron convalescent plasma was basically stable. Compared with the mixed convalescent plasma sample G128 collected in June 2022, the potency of Omicron neutralizing antibodies of WP series were significantly higher, the ratio of BA.2 antibody to prototype antibody increased from 26.9% (before infection) to 82.6%-87.5% (after infection). The results of VN series before Omicron infection were < 100 EIU/mL, and the results of OP series after Omicron infection showed that the plasma collected from the beginning of December 2022 was the peak of antibody in the same month,and then dropped sharply, entering a short plateau in February-March 2023 (potency was about 40% of the peak value),and then dropped sharply again in April (potency was about 20% of the peak value). Conclusion The potency and proportion of neutralizing antibody against Omicron subtype in convalescent plasma after COVID-19 Omicron strain infection increased significantly. IgG antibody of plasma donors in different regions reached its peak in the month of infection, then continued to dropped sharply. The best collection period of plasma that can be used for human COVID-19 immunoglobulin for intravenous injection was 1 to 2 months after infection.

Abstract Introduction Since hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is an important therapy for malignant and non-malignant pediatric diseases, improving transplant-related mortality remains a challenge. Currently, rituximab, a monoclonal antibody of anti-CD20, is widely used for several post-HSCT complications. However, few studies have focused on the application of rituximab before HSCT. Methods We conducted a retrospective case–control study from January 2019 to July 2021 to determine this effect in a single center. Forty-eight patients were included in the rituximab group, with a one-to-one ratio matched to the control group. Results Both the occurrence rate and cumulative incidence rate of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infection were significantly lower in the rituximab group than in the without-rituximab group (10.4% vs. 33.3%, p = 0.014 and 12.2% vs. 39.3% p = 0.0026, respectively). Furthermore, without the application of rituximab was identified as a risk factor for post-HSCT EBV infection via both univariate [hazard ratio (HR) = 4.17, 95%CI (1.52–11.43), p = 0.005] and multivariate analyses [HR = 4.65, 95%CI (1.66–13.0), p = 0.003]. Although the overall survival (OS) probability of the rituximab group was comparable to the without-rituximab group, a markedly improved OS of the rituximab group was found in the malignant disease subgroup (78.9% vs. 42.1%, p = 0.032). The outcomes of graft-versus-host disease, neutrophil and platelet engraftment, other viral infections, and the reconstitution of lymphocytes showed no significant differences between the two groups. Conclusions The administration of rituximab before HSCT may prevent EBV infection following HSCT.

In the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, China has long adhered to the "Dynamic Zero COVID-19" strategy till the end of 2022. To understand the mechanism of this strategy, we used the case of the Yangzhou summer outbreak in 2021 and a multi-stage dynamical model incorporating city-wide and key area testing-trace-isolation (TTI) strategies. We defined two time-varying indexes for measuring the disease transmission risk and the public health prevention and control force, respectively, which allowed us to explore the mechanisms of TTI policies. Integrating with the historical data and literature parameter values, we first estimated the parameters and then quantified the relevant indexes over time. The findings showed that multiple rounds of rapid testing were one of the critical measures to overcome the outbreak in Yangzhou within one month. In addition, we compared the impact of the duration of the free transmission stage, tracking rate, testing interval and precise division of key areas on the epidemiological indicators, including the final sizes of infections and isolations, peak value, peak arrival time and epidemic duration and the minimum round of testing. Our results suggest that the early detection of the epidemic, an improved efficiency of tracking, and a reduced duration of each test play a positive role in restraining COVID-19; however, a considerable investment of resources was essential to achieve a significant effect quickly.

The phenolic components, antioxidation, and anticancer effects of different polar parts of ethanol extract of Jinhua Tibetan tea were studied. Three polar fractions, i.e., ethyl acetate, n-butyl alcohol, and water fractions, of ethanol extract of Jinhua Tibetan tea were obtained via liquid-liquid extraction process. The contents of total polyphenols and total flavonoids of the three fractions and ethanol extract were determined using Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride-potassium acetate method, respectively. The contents of tea polyphenol monomers in all the parts were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Their antioxidant activities of all the parts were tested and compared using DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS+ radical scavenging, and Fe2+ ion chelating methods. Their anti-proliferation effects on human cervical cancer HeLa cell were evaluated using cell counting Kit8. Results indicated that ethyl acetate fraction had the highest contents of total polyphenols and total flavonoids, as 384.65 mg/g and 188.82 mg/g, respectively, including gallic acid (GA), gallocatechin (GC), and epigallocatechin (EGC) as major phenolic monomers. Antioxidant activity test showed that compared with vitamin E, the DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging capacity of all the parts were as the sequence vitamin E>ethyl acetate fraction>n-butyl alcohol fraction>ethanol extract>water fraction, with Pethyl acetate fraction (332.4 µg/mL)>n-butyl alcohol fraction (1332.0 µg/mL)>ethanol extract (1846.0 µg/mL) and water fraction (1952.0 µg/mL), with P0.05. All the results indicated that the general antioxidant ability sequence was ethyl acetate fraction>n-butyl alcohol fraction>ethanol extract>water fraction. All the parts showed anti-proliferation activity to human cervical cancer HeLa cell, and all with dose-effect relationship. Ethyl acetate fraction showed the strongest anti-proliferation activity (IC50 111.6 µg/mL) to the HeLa cell. In conclusion, ethyl acetate fraction possessed the strongest capacity of both antioxidation and anti-proliferation to HeLa cell, resulted from its highest contents of polyphenols and flavonoids. The studies provide some preliminary scientific evidence of the antioxidant and anticancer effects of Jinhua Tibetan tea.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the main chronic inflammatory diseases that pose a global threat. Its symptoms persist for a long time, recur, and seriously affect the physical and mental health of the patients. Existing research has shown that the occurrence and development of AR are related to genetic and environmental factors. In recent years, the harm of air pollution to human health has received increasing attention, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is the main harmful component of air pollutants. Its small particle size makes it easy to absorb various harmful substances, enter the respiratory tract, damage the nasal mucosa, and participate in the occurrence and development process of AR. At present, a large number of epidemiological studies have confirmed that PM2.5 is positively related to the incidence rate and severity of symptoms of AR, but its exact mechanism is still unclear. Therefore, studying the mechanism of PM2.5 exposure on AR damage is expected to provide new clues for exploring the pathogenesis and deterioration of AR. This article reviewed the epidemiological studies and toxicological mechanisms of PM2.5 exposure and AR in recent years; discussed the potential biological mechanisms of PM2.5 induced AR occurrence and development, including nasal mucositis damage, oxidative stress, and immune damage. Furthermore, a new research direction was proposed, which suggested that neuroimmune disorders and bacterial imbalance may be involved in the progression of AR and play a certain role in the toxic effects induced by PM2.5. We aim to provide ideas and a theoretical basis for developing effective measures to prevent and treat AR.

Abstract Background Coccidiosis, a prominent intestinal protozoan disease, carries significant economic implications for the poultry industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Fengqiang Shengtai (BLES), a probiotics product, and coccidiosis vaccine in modulating the intestinal microbiome and providing insight into mitigating the occurrence and management of avian coccidiosis. Methods Broilers included in the study were divided into four pre-treatment groups: the Pre-Con group (commercial diet), Pre-BLES group (BLES supplement), Pre-Vac group (coccidiosis vaccination) and Pre-Vac-BLES group (combined vaccination and BLES). Body weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion ratio were monitored from age 25 to 55 days. Cecum contents were collected at 8 and 15 days of age for comparative analysis of intestinal microbiomes. In the Pre-BLES and Pre-Vac-BLES groups, probiotics were administered at a dose of 0.01 g per chicken between ages 3 to 6 days and 10–13 days. At 3 days of age, chickens in the Pre-Vac and Pre-Vac-BLES groups were vaccinated with 1700 sporulated oocysts of the live coccidiosis vaccine per chicken. At the age of 25 days, Eimeria spp. challenge experiments were performed based on the aforementioned immunization strategy, and the oocysts per gram (OPG) in the feces, intestinal lesion score and intestinal pathological characteristics were evaluated. Specifically, 30 chickens were randomly selected from each group and orally administered 34,000 sporulated oocysts of Eimeria spp. per chicken, re-defined as Eimeria group, BLES-Eimeria group, Vac-Eimeria group and Vac-BLES-Eimeria group, respectively. Additionally, 30 chickens were randomly selected from the Pre-Con group and included as negative control without Eimeria spp. challenge. Intestinal microbiota was sequenced and analyzed when the broilers were 32 days old. Results A significant improvement was observed in body weight gain of the broilers in the Pre-BLES and Pre-Vac-BLES group at 45 days of age. Analysis of the intestinal microbiota revealed a positive correlation between the experimental groups receiving BLES and coccidiosis vaccines at 8 and 15 days of age with the Enterococcus genus and Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 group, respectively. In addition to the reduced lesion score and OPG values, the combination of coccidiosis vaccine and BLES also reduced the intestinal epithelial abscission induced by coccidiosis vaccines. The results of intestinal microbial function prediction demonstrated that N-glycan biosynthesis and ferroptosis were the prominent signal pathways in the Vac-BLES-Eimeria group. Conclusions Taken together, the results of the present study suggest that supplementation of BLES with coccidiosis vaccine represents a promising strategy for improving growth performance, alleviating clinical manifestations and inducing favorable alterations to the intestinal microbiota in broiler chickens affected by coccidiosis.

Abstract This study focuses on the significance of improving the land degradation of Mu Us Sandy Land to increase cultivated land area and promote ecological green development. The research objects were four kinds of mixed soils, and rhizosphere soils were collected during the crop harvesting period. The volume ratio of soft rock to sand was 0:1 (control check, CK), 1:5 (composite soil one, PS1), 1:2 (composite soil two, PS2), and 1:1 (composite soil three, PS3). The results showed that the large aggregates were primarily mechanically stable aggregates, while the small aggregates were mainly water-stable aggregates. The soft rock promoted the increase of clay and silt content in sandy soil, and the soil texture changed from sand to loam. The contents of organic matter, available phosphorus, and available potassium increased significantly under PS2 and PS3 treatments, but there was no significant difference between them. Total nitrogen had no significant difference among treatments. Actinobaciota, Proteobateria, and Chloroflexi were the dominant bacteria in rhizosphere soil, accounting for about 75% of all microorganisms. At the Genus level, the soft rock contributes to richer species composition. The diversity index, evenness index, and richness index was higher in PS1, and the available phosphorus and available potassium content promoted the increase of diversity. Therefore, when the proportion of soft rock and sand compound soil is between 1: 5 and 1: 2, it can be used as an important basis and technical parameter for Mu Us Sandy Land improvement.

Background: Conventional regimens for refractory idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) still have limitations. Rituximab (RTX) has a good effect in the treatment of refractory IMN. However, whether RTX single or combined with immunosuppressive therapy is more effective and whether adverse events will increase are still inconclusive. Aims: To investigate the efficacy and safety of RTX combined with low-dose tacrolimus (TAC) versus RTX alone in the treatment of refractory IMN. Study Design: A retrospective cohort study. Methods: We retrospectively studied 91 cases of refractory IMN diagnosed between January 2018 and June 2021, all of which immunosuppressive regimens had failed. Thirty-four patients received RTX combined with TAC (RTX + TAC group), and 57 patients were treated with RTX alone (RTX group). The RTX + TAC group was given RTX 1 g once every 2 weeks, two times, and TAC 0.03 mg/kg/day orally. In the RTX group, RTX was given at the same dosage as the RTX + TAC group. Clinical data were collected at 12 months of follow-up to compare the complete and partial remission rates and the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups. Results: The overall effectiveness rate of RTX + TAC in the treatment of refractory IMN was 87.14%, of which the partial and complete remission rates were 50.01% and 37.13%, respectively, and the median time to complete remission was 9 (interquartile range [IQR] 6.0, 12.0) months. The overall effectiveness rate of RTX was 65.87%, of which the partial and complete remission rates were 39.48% and 26.39%, respectively, and the median time to complete remission was 10.5 (IQR 6.0, 12.0) months. Adverse events occurred in 6 (17.65%) patients in the RTX + TAC group and in 11 (19.30%) in the RTX group (P = 0.473). Proteinuria and high titer of PLA2R are risk factors for non-remission. Conclusion: The complete and partial remission rates of RTX combined with low-dose TAC in the treatment of refractory IMN are higher than those of RTX alone, and no significant increase in adverse events was noted.

Abstract Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is the leading cause of acute liver failure (ALF). Continuous and prolonged hepatic cellular oxidative stress and liver inflammatory stimuli are key signatures of DILI. DEAD-box helicase 3, X-linked (DDX3X) is a central regulator in pro-survival stress granule (SG) assembly in response to stress signals. However, the role of DDX3X in DILI remains unknown. Herein, we characterized the hepatocyte-specific role of DDX3X in DILI. Human liver tissues of DILI patients and control subjects were used to evaluate DDX3X expression. APAP, CCl4 and TAA models of DILI were established and compared between hepatocyte-specific DDX3X knockout (DDX3XΔhep) and wild-type control (DDX3Xfl/fl) mice. Hepatic expression of DDX3X was significantly decreased in the pathogenesis of DILI compared with controls in human and mice. Compared to DDX3Xfl/fl mice, DDX3XΔhep mice developed significant liver injury in multiple DILI models. DDX3X deficiency aggravates APAP induced oxidative stress and hepatocyte death by affecting the pro-survival stress granule (SG) assembly. Moreover, DDX3X deficiency induces inflammatory responses and causes pronounced macrophage infiltration. The use of targeted DDX3X drug maybe promising for the treatment of DILI in human.

Abstract High-quality ground observation networks are an important basis for scientific research. Here, an automatic soil observation network for high-resolution satellite applications in China (SONTE-China) was established to measure both pixel- and multilayer-based soil moisture and temperature. SONTE-China is distributed across 17 field observation stations with a variety of ecosystems, covering both dry and wet zones. In this paper, the average root mean squared error (RMSE) of station-based soil moisture for well-characterized SONTE-China sites is 0.027 m3/m3 (0.014~0.057 m3/m3) following calibration for specific soil properties. The temporal and spatial characteristics of the observed soil moisture and temperature in SONTE-China conform to the geographical location, seasonality and rainfall of each station. The time series Sentinel-1 C-band radar signal and soil moisture show strong correlations, and the RMSE of the estimated soil moisture from radar data was lower than 0.05 m3/m3 for the Guyuan and Minqin stations. SONTE-China is a soil moisture retrieval algorithm that can validate soil moisture products and provide basic data for weather forecasting, flood forecasting, agricultural drought monitoring and water resource management.

Abstract Esophageal stricture is a common complication after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for superficial esophageal cancer and precancerous lesions, we intend to investigate the independent risk factors of esophageal stricture after ESD by adding the data of included living habits, established a nomogram model to predict the risk of esophageal stricture, and verified it by external data. The clinical data and living habits of patients with early esophageal cancer and precancerous lesions who underwent ESD in the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College and Langzhong People's Hospital from March 2017 to August 2021 were retrospectively collected. The data collected from the two hospitals were used as the development group (n = 256) and the validation group (n = 105), respectively. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine independent risk factors for esophageal stricture after ESD and establish a nomogram model for the development group. The prediction performance of the nomogram model is internally and externally verified by calculating C-Index and plotting the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and calibration curve, respectively. Objective To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the collection of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) in pediatric patients with thalassemia major (TM) weighing 20 kg or less. Methods PBSCs collection data of 170 pediatric patients with TM weighing 20 kg or less from January 2013 to December 2020 in our center were reviewed. Safety was assessed by the occurrence of adverse events during apheresis procedures, and efficacy was evaluated by the number of CD34+ cells collected. Results A total of 171 PBSCs procedures were performed on 170 patients with TM weighing 20 kg or less, with a median age of (4.98±1.53) years and a median weight of (17.30±2.18) kg. The probability of collecting at least 1×106 CD34+ cells/kg during a single course of apheresis was 99.41% (169/170), with a median (5.88±4.23) ×106 CD34+ cells collected per kg of weight of the recipient. A minimum pre-apheresis hemoglobin (Hb) of 60 g/L in patients with TM weighing 20 kg or less was safe and feasible. The most common adverse event of G-CSF mobilization in TM patients is bone pain, with the incidence of 7.65% (13/170), which was higher than that of healthy children donors in our center. The most common adverse events during the collection were pain at the puncture site of the femoral vein (6.47%, 11/170) and low pressure of the fluid (2.92%, 5/170). And no serious complications related to PBSCs mobilization, central venous catheter(CVC)placement or the apheresis procedure occurred. Conclusion PBSCs collection by COM.TEC blood cell separator in children weighing 20 kg or less is safe and efficacious.

Abstract The authors conducted an observational study to explore the association between body fat composition and the risk of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) and their combined effect on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Adults aged 18–74 years from the Northwest China Natural Population Cohort: Ningxia Project (CNC‐NX) were recruited in this study. Association between body fat composition and HHcy was evaluated by logistic regression model. Restricted cubic spline was used to find nonlinear association. BackgroundAluminum and fluoride are neurotoxic, and aluminum exposure alone is closely related to the overall cognitive function of operational workers. It is unclear about the effect of aluminum and fluoride interactions on cognitive function.ObjectiveTo evaluate a potential interaction effect of blood aluminum and urinary fluoride on the overall cognitive function of workers working in an aluminum plant.MethodsUsing cluster sampling, 230 workers in the electrolysis workshop of an aluminum group company in Shanxi Province were selected, and plasma aluminum concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and urinary fluoride by ion-selective electrode. The study participants were divided into a low blood aluminum group and a high blood aluminum group according to the median (M) of blood aluminum concentration, and a low urinary fluoride group and a high urinary fluoride group by a predetermined cutoff point (2.160 mg·L−1). The Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Beijing (MoCA-BJ) was used to assess overall cognitive function of the workers. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between blood aluminum, urinary fluoride, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), including multiplicative interaction analysis and correlation analysis; R language was used to fit an additive interaction model of blood aluminum and urinary fluoride on MCI and to calculate synergy index (S), relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), and attributable proportion due to interaction (API).ResultsAmong the 230 operational workers, the median blood aluminum concentration (P25, P75) was 40.11 (25.16, 58.89) µg·L−1, and there were 104 cases of abnormal urinary fluoride, with an abnormality rate of 45.2%. There was a multiplicative interaction (OR=7.783, 95%CI: 1.377, 43.991) and no additive interaction (RERI=0.030, 95%CI: −0.498, 0.559; API=0.018, 95%CI: −0.279, 0.316; S=1.049, 95%CI: 0.519, 2.118) for the effect between blood aluminum and urinary fluoride on overall cognitive function of the workers. The logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of MCI was 12.105 (95%CI: 2.802, 52.287) times higher in workers with both high blood aluminum and high urinary fluoride than in those with low blood aluminum and low urinary fluoride, after adjusting for selected influencing factors.ConclusionOccupational exposure related high blood aluminum and high urinary fluoride are risk factors for cognitive dysfunction, and the coexistence of both indicators increases the risk of MCI in workers with occupational aluminum exposure, with a multiplicative interaction.

Abstract Background The present study aimed to compare the effects of the combined administration of two adjuvants, dopamine and phenylephrine, on the cutaneous analgesic effect and duration of mexiletine in rats. Methods Nociceptive blockage was evaluated by the inhibition of response to skin pinpricks in rats via the cutaneous trunci muscle reflex (CTMR). After subcutaneous injection, the analgesic activities of mexiletine in the absence and presence of either dopamine or phenylephrine were assessed. Each injection was standardized into 0.6 ml with a mixture of drugs and saline. Results Subcutaneous injections of mexiletine successfully induced dose-dependent cutaneous analgesia in rats. The results revealed that rats injected with 1.8 μmol mexiletine exhibited 43.75% blockage (%MPE), while rats injected with 6.0 μmol mexiletine showed 100% blockage. Co-application of mexiletine (1.8 or 6.0 μmol) with dopamine (0.06, 0.60, or 6.00 μmol) elicited full sensory block (%MPE). Sensory blockage ranged from 81.25% to 95.83% in rats injected with mexiletine (1.8 μmol) and phenylephrine (0.0059 or 0.0295 μmol), and complete subcutaneous analgesia was observed in rats injected with mexiletine (1.8 μmol) and a higher concentration of phenylephrine (0.1473 μmol). Furthermore, mexiletine at 6.0 μmol completely blocked nociception when combined with any concentration of phenylephrine, while 0.1473 μmol phenylephrine alone exhibited 35.417% subcutaneous analgesia. The combined application of dopamine (0.06/0.6/6 μmol) and mexiletine (1.8/6 μmol) resulted in increased %MPE, complete block time, full recovery time, and AUCs compared to the combined application of phenylephrine (0.0059 and 0.1473 μmol) and mexiletine (1.8/6 μmol) (p

Abstract Rapid assessment and intervention of suicide risk are common and challenging in psychiatric emergency departments (PED). It is unclear whether distinct pathophysiological processes exist among depressive patients with suicidality. This study examined the network structures of biomarkers on Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, such as Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and Corticosterone (Cort), as well as suicidality and depressive symptoms in mood disorder patients in PED. Mood disorder patients in PED were assessed with the measurements of suicidality and depressive symptoms, respectively. A network analysis was performed to identify central symptoms and bridge symptoms of this network and their links to ACTH and Cort. Network stability was examined using the case-dropping procedure. The Network Comparison Test (NCT) was conducted to evaluate whether network characteristics differed by gender. A total of 1815 mood disorder patients were recruited. The prevalence of SI was 31.2% (95% CI: 28.15–34.21%), SP was 30.4% (95% CI: 27.39–33.41%), SA was 30.62% (95% CI: 27.61–33.64%) among psychiatric outpatients. The mean score of HAMD-24 was 13.87 ± 8.02. Network analysis revealed that ‘Somatic anxiety’ had the highest expected centrality, followed by ‘Hopelessness’ and ‘Suicide attempt’. ‘Corticosterone’ and ‘Retardation’ may be the main bridge symptoms between depressive symptoms and the suicidality community. The network model showed a high degree of stability. Gender did not significantly influence the network structure. The central symptoms and key bridge symptoms identified could be potential targets for interventions of the HPA axis, which is designed for regular screening of a range of suicidal activity. In the light of this, timely treatment should be provided for psychiatric emergency care.

The nominate subgenus Pediopsoides (Pediopsoides) Matsumura, 1912 is widely distributed in the Oriental region but has high species diversity only in southern China. The present paper describes and illustrates six new species of Pediopsoides (Pediopsoides) namely, P. (P.) ailaoshanensis Li & Dai, sp. nov., P. (P.) quadrispinosus Li & Dai, sp. nov., P. (P.) flavus Li & Dai, sp. nov., and P. (P.) pianmaensis Li & Dai, sp. nov. all collected in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, P. (P.) maoershanensis Li & Dai, sp. nov., found in Guangxi Autonomous Region, southern China, and P. (P.) huangi Li & Dai sp. nov., from Taiwan, previously incorrectly recorded as a new name by Li & Dai, 2018 in Dai et al. 2018: 203 for P. (P.) femorata Huang & Viraktamath, 1993 (nec Pediopsis femorata Hamilton, 1980). Two new junior synonyms of Sispocnis Anufriev, 1967 are proposed, i.e., Digitalis Liu & Zhang, 2002, syn. nov. and Neosispocnis Dmitriev, 2020, syn. nov.

In order to improve the utilization of agricultural and forestry waste and promote the industrial production of new biomass materials, sorghum straw powder (SSP), nano-ZnO, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used as the main film matrix and sorghum straw powder/nano-ZnO/polyvinyl alcohol (SSP/Nano-ZnO/PVA, SNP) nanocomposite films were prepared by blending casting method in this research. The effects of SSP addition and different film-forming temperatures (75, 80, 85, 90, 95 ℃) on the thickness, tensile strength (TS), barrier properties, microstructure, spectral properties and thermal properties of SNP nanocomposite films were investigated. The results showed that the addition of SSP could improve the TS, barrier properties and thermal properties of the SNP nanocomposite films. With the increase of the film-forming temperature, the TS and barrier properties of the SNP nanocomposite films increased first and decreased later. When the film forming temperature was 85 ℃, SNP nanocomposite film exhibited the best comprehensive performance with maximum TS (31.22 MPa) and minimum water vapor transmission coefficient (1.32×10−12 g/(cm·s·Pa)), water soluble (36.41%) and swelling degree (238.41%). The SEM, AFM, FT-IR and TG analyses showed that the SNP nanocomposite film had a smooth surface, dense cross-section, good compatibility between the substrates and good thermal stability, and overall performance (better than other film-forming temperatures of nanocomposite films).

Abstract Background Sexual dimorphism is obvious not only in the overall architecture of human body, but also in intraoral details. Many studies have found a correlation between gender and morphometric features of teeth, such as mesio-distal diameter, buccal-lingual diameter and height. However, it’s still difficult to detect gender through the observation of intraoral photographs, with accuracy around 50%. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of automatically telling gender from intraoral photographs by deep neural network, and to provide a novel angle for individual oral treatment. Methods A deep learning model based on R-net was proposed, using the largest dataset (10,000 intraoral images) to support the automatic detection of gender. In order to reverse analyze the classification basis of neural network, Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) was used in the second step, exploring anatomical factors associated with gender recognizability. Abstract Purpose In recent years, considerable research has been conducted on the use of plant growth regulators (PGRs) to improve crop yields. Large amounts of PGRs are applied to regulate crop growth. However, few studies have assessed the impact of PGRs, which leave soil residues, on soil microorganisms, especially rhizobia. Methods In this study, the influence of inoculation of soybean roots with Sinorhizobium fredii and Bradyrhizobium japonicum exposed to gibberellin A3 (GA3) and mepiquat chloride (MC) on nodule number, nitrogenase activity, and a symbiotic nitrogen fixation gene (fixA) expression was studied. The nitrate content, free amino acids, and nitrate reductase activity of the roots, and seed yield and quality of soybean were measured. Result Nodulation was promoted to some extent, whereas nitrogenase activity and fixA expression were inhibited to some extent by treatment with GA3; however, these effects were reversed by treatment with MC. In a pot experiment to study phenotypic characteristics, rhizobia treatment in combination with GA3 or MC significantly improved soybean yield and seed nitrogen content, and increased the root nitrate content, free amino acid content, and nitrate reductase activity. Conclusion The results indicated that PGRs, which leave soil residues, have significant positive effects on the growth and activity of soybean and rhizobia.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the distribution and changes in ocular biometry in 4-to to 9-year-old Chinese children and to compare the differences between age and genders in these parameters. Methods This was a school-based cross-sectional study. A total of 1,528 Chinese children, aged 4–9 years, from one primary school and 12 kindergartens, were included in the study. Axial length, corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth, and corneal diameter were measured for each child. Results AL and anterior chamber depth gradually increased with age in both genders. No significant changes in corneal curvature or corneal diameter were detected at different ages in either genders group. The mean ALs of males and females were 22.94 ± 0.80 mm and 22.38 ± 0.79 mm, respectively. The mean corneal curvatures of males and females were 43.05 ± 1.37 D and 43.75 ± 1.48 D, respectively. The mean anterior chamber depth of males and females were 3.47 ± 0.24 mm and 3.38 ± 0.25 mm, respectively. The mean corneal diameter of males and females were 12.08 ± 0.43 mm and 11.94 ± 0.44 mm, respectively. Females had consistently shorter ALs, shorter anterior chamber depth, smaller corneal diameter, and steeper corneal curvatures than males at any age. Conclusions Boys had larger dimensions than girls for all ocular parameters except corneal curvature (flatter). Boys and girls showed similar trends for all parameters. Axial length and anterior chamber depth increased from 4 to 9 years of age, whereas corneal diameter and curvature did not change with age in either genders.

Abstract Infant‐type hemispheric glioma, a new subtype of pediatric high‐grade glioma, arises in the cerebral hemispheres. Despite better survival outcomes, the treatment of infant‐type hemispheric glioma is still facing challenges. Here, we reported a case of QKI‐ALK fusion, infant‐type hemispheric glioma with lung metastasis who achieved a complete clinical response after lorlatinib treatment. This typical case demonstrated the importance of appropriate molecularly targeted treatments in ALK‐fused tumors, and lorlatinib may serve as an effective complement to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy in primary glioma harboring ALK fusions and its metastasis.

Abstract Background To analyze the clinical and radiological effects of type 2 diabetes mellitus on the prognosis of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture after percutaneous vertebroplasty, and explore the prognostic value of osteoporotic fracture classification. Methods Osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture patients who received vertebroplasty from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2021 were divided into type 2 diabetes mellitus group and control group in this retrospective cohort study. The plume–surface interaction (PSI) is a common phenomenon that describes the environment surrounding the landers resulting from the impingement of hot rocket exhaust on the regolith of planetary bodies. The PSI will cause obscuration, erosion of the planetary surface, and high-speed spreading of dust or high-energy ejecta streams, which will induce risks to a safe landing and cause damage to payloads on the landers or to nearby assets. Safe landings and the subsequent scientific goals of deep-space exploration in China call for a comprehensive understanding of the PSI process, including the plume flow mechanics, erosion mechanism, and ejecta dynamics. In addition, the landing crater caused by the plume provides a unique and insightful perspective on the understanding of PSI. In particular, the PSI can be used directly to constrain the composition, structure, and mechanical properties of the surface and subsurface soil. In this study, we conducted a systematic review of the phenomenology and terrestrial tests of PSI: we analyzed the critical factors in the PSI process and compared the differences in PSI phenomena between lunar and Martian conditions; we also reviewed the main erosion mechanisms and the evolution and development of terrestrial tests on PSI. We discuss the problems with PSI, challenges of terrestrial tests, and prospects of PSI, and we show the preliminary results obtained from the landing crater caused by the PSI of Tianwen-1. From analysis of the camera images and digital elevation model reconstructions, we concluded that the landing of Tianwen-1 caused the deepest crater (depth > 40 cm) on a planetary surface reported to date and revealed stratigraphic layers in the subsurface of Martian soil. We further constrained the lower bounds of the mechanical properties of Martian soil by a slope stability analysis of the Tianwen-1 landing crater. The PSI may offer promising opportunities to obtain greater insights into planetary science, including the subsurface structure, mineral composition, and properties of soil.

Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth leading cause of malignancy worldwide, and its progression is influenced by the immune microenvironment. Natural killer (NK) cells are essential in the anti-tumor response and have been linked to immunotherapies for cancers. Therefore, it is important to unify and validate the role of NK cell-related gene signatures in HCC. In this study, we used RNA-seq analysis on HCC samples from public databases. We applied the ConsensusClusterPlus tool to construct the consensus matrix and cluster the samples based on their NK cell-related expression profile data. We employed the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis to identify the hub genes. Additionally, we utilized the CIBERSORT and ESTIMATE web-based methods to perform immune-related evaluations. Our results showed that the NK cell-related gene-based classification divided HCC patients into three clusters. The C3 cluster was activated in immune activation signaling pathways and showed better prognosis and good clinical features. In contrast, the C1 cluster was remarkably enriched in cell cycle pathways. The stromal score, immune score, and ESTIMATE score in C3 were much higher than those in C2 and C1. Furthermore, we identified six hub genes: CDC20, HMOX1, S100A9, CFHR3, PCN1, and GZMA. The NK cell-related genes-based risk score subgroups demonstrated that a higher risk score subgroup showed poorer prognosis. In summary, our findings suggest that NK cell-related genes play an essential role in HCC prognosis prediction and have therapeutic potential in promoting NK cell antitumor immunity. The six identified hub genes may serve as useful biomarkers for novel therapeutic targets.

Abstract In the practical water resources management, the allowable thresholds of pollutants are not unique. However, the conventional grey water footprint (GWF) model cannot deal with this uncertainty in the controlling threshold. To solve this problem, an improved GWF model and pollution risk evaluation method is designed according to the uncertainty analysis theory and maximum entropy principle. In this model, GWF is defined as the mathematical expectation of virtual water to dilute the pollution load within the allowable threshold, and the pollution risk is deduced by the stochastic probability by which GWF exceeds the local water resources. And then, the improved GWF model is applied in the pollution evaluation of Jiangxi Province, China. The results show that: (1) From 2013 to 2017, the annual GWF values of Jiangxi Province were 136.36 billion m3, 143.78 billion m3, 143.77 billion m3, 169.37 billion m3 and 103.36 billion m3, respectively. And their pollution risk values and grades were 0.30 (moderate), 0.27 (moderate), 0.19 (low), 0.22 (moderate), and 0.16 (low), respectively. In 2015, the determinant of the GWF was TP, and TN in other years. (2) The improved GWF model has an evaluation result which is basically consistent with WQQR, and it is an effective water resource evaluation method to deal with the uncertainty in controlling thresholds. (3) Compared with the conventional GWF model, the improved GWF model has better capacities in identifying pollution grades and recognizing pollution risks.

Located between the 410-km and 660-km discontinuities, the mantle transition zone is the key region for understanding the thermal and chemical structure and the dynamic evolution of the Earth’s mantle. The top and bottom boundaries of the mantle transition zone correspond to mineral phase transitions from olivine to wadsleyite and ringwoodite to bridgmanite and ferropericlase, respectively. This paper summarizes the main seismological methods for studying and related research progress of the mantle transition zone discontinuities. These methods include SS and PP precursors, receiver functions, ScS reverberations, P'P' precursors, waveform modeling of seismic triplications, reflected body waves retrieved from ambient noise interferometry, etc. Overall, there is a positive correlation between the thickness of the mantle transition zone and velocity perturbations in the mantle transition zone on the large-scale structure, indicating that they are both mainly controlled by mantle temperature, consistent with the prediction of olivine phase transitions. However, the lack of negative correlation between 410-km and 660-km discontinuity topography, which is expected from olivine phase transitions, suggests that either the thermal structure is not coherent across the mantle transition zone vertically or there are lateral varitions in water content or mantle chemical composition. The strength (including velocity, density and impedance jumps) and width of the 410-km and 660-km discontinuities are mainly controlled by the chemical composition and water content of the mantle transition zone. Some studies also detected 520-km and 560-km discontinuities within the mantle transition zone, which might be caused by the phase transition from wadsleyite to ringwoodite and the exsolution of calcium-perovskite from majorite, respectively. The seismically detected low-velocity zones above and below the mantle transition zone may be related to the dehydration melting caused by hydrated mantle transition zone material entering the low water-solubility upper and lower mantle. Although great progresses have been made, many important scientific questions related with the mantle transition zone remain unsolved. Accurate and reliable seismic imaging of the mantle transition zone provides crucial information for understanding these questions. Multidisciplinary studies integrating seismology, mineral physics, geodynamics and geochemistry are also needed. Finally, this paper discusses some future seismological research directions of the mantle transition zone.

Thanks to the rapid development of seismic wave propagation theory, emerging of data analyzing methods, and the increasing coverage of the seismic exploration, our ability to probe deep into the Earth has been increased from the scale of 100 kilometers to the scale of kilometers at present. The existence and wide-distributed heterogeneities at a scale of thousands of kilometers in the massive lower mantle have been revealed by seismic tomography for a long time, while the knowledge of smaller scales (~10～100 km) has come from high-frequency seismic scattered wave detection techniques that are mainly based on array analysis. A growing body of evidence shows that multiple-scale heterogeneities distribute through the Earth's entire lower mantle; the heterogeneities have been attributed to basaltic oceanic crust and its underlying lithospheric mantle. Therefore, detecting and characterizing of their distribution and formation mechanism will help understand the material composition, mineral phase transformation, and thermochemical structure of the Earth's interior. Furthermore, they shed light on the thermochemical and dynamic processes of the Earth's interior, such as mantle rheology, convection, and mixing efficiency. This review focuses on the small-scale heterogeneities/scatterers distributed in the mid-lower mantle at a depth of ~700～2000 km. Firstly, from the perspective of the definition of the scatterers and statistical description of small-scale heterogeneities, we introduce a variety of seismic waves, acting as the "probes" for the small-scale heterogeneities in the lower mantle, and then summarize the characteristics and limitations of available detection methods. Moreover, some representative studies are briefly reviewed. Based on the data of more than 200 lower mantle scatterers collected from previous publications, we characterize the distribution of scatterer's depths. Finally, we point out some unsolved problems in the detection method of lower mantle scatterers and propose the prospect for future research directions.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is widely used in the treatment of gastric cancer, and the emergence of drug resistance and toxic effects has limited its application. Therefore, there is an urgent need for safe and effective novel drugs or new therapies. β-Ionone (BI) is found in vegetables and fruits and possesses an inhibitory proliferation of tumor cells in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we investigated whether BI could enhance the inhibitory effects of 5-FU on the proliferation of gastric adenocarcinoma cells and the growth of gastric cancer cell xenografts in a mouse model. The effects of BI and 5-FU alone or their combination on the cell viability, apoptosis, and mitochondrial membrane potential, the cell cycle, and its related proteins-Cyclin D1, and CDK4 as well as PCNA and GSK-3β were evaluated in SGC-7901 cells and MKN45 cells by MTT, MB, flow cytometry and Western blot. In addition, the effects of BI and 5-FU alone or their combination on the growth of SGC-7901 cell xenografts in nude mice were investigated. The results showed that BI significantly enhanced the sensitivity of gastric adenocarcinoma cells to 5-FU in vitro and in vivo, i.e. proliferation inhibited, apoptosis induced and GSK-3β protein activated. Therefore, our results suggest that BI increases the antitumor effect of 5-FU on gastric adenocarcinoma cells, at least partly from an activated GSK-3β signaling pathway.

“Boundarics in Biomedicine” is a cutting-edge interdisciplinary discipline, which is of great significance for understanding the origin of life, the interaction between internal and external environments, and the mechanism of disease occurrence and evolution. Here, the definition of Boundarics in Biomedicine is first described, including its connotation, research object, research method, challenges, and future perspectives. “Boundarics in Biomedicine” is a cutting-edge interdisciplinary discipline involving multiple fields (e.g., bioscience, medicine, chemistry, materials science, and information science) dedicated to investigating and solving key scientific questions in the formation, identification, and evolution of living organism boundaries. Specifically, it encompasses 3 levels: (a) the boundary between the living organism and the external environment, (b) internal boundary within living organism, and (c) the boundary related to disease in living organism. The advancement of research in Boundarics in Biomedicine is of great scientific significance for understanding the origin of life, the interaction between internal and external environments, and the mechanism of disease occurrence and evolution, thus providing novel principles, technologies, and methods for early diagnosis and prevention of major diseases, personalized drug development, and prognosis assessment (Fig. 1).

Background & Aims: Dysfunction of the intestinal epithelial barrier comprising the junctional complex of tight junctions and adherent junctions leads to increased intestinal permeability, which is a major cause of uncontrolled inflammation related to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The NAD+-dependent deacetylase SIRT1 is implicated in inflammation and the pathologic process of IBD. We aimed to elucidate the protective role and underlying mechanism of SIRT1 in cell-cell junction and intestinal epithelial integrity. Methods: The correlation of SIRT1 expression and human IBD was analyzed by GEO or immunohistochemical analyses. BK5.mSIRT1 transgenic mice and wild-type mice were given dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) and the manifestation of colitis-related phenotypes was analyzed. Intestinal permeability was measured by FITC-dextran and cytokines expression was analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The expression of the cell junction–related proteins in DSS-treated or SIRT1-knockdown Caco2 or HCT116 cells was analyzed by Western blotting. The effects of nicotinamide mononucleotide in DSS-induced mice colitis were investigated. Correlations of the SIRT1-β-TrCP1-Snail1-Occludin/Claudin-1/E-cadherin pathway with human IBD samples were analyzed. Results: Reduced SIRT1 expression is associated with human IBD specimens. SIRT1 transgenic mice exhibit much-reduced manifestations of DSS-induced colitis. The activation of SIRT1 by nicotinamide mononucleotide bolsters intestinal epithelial barrier function and ameliorates DSS-induced colitis in mice. Mechanistically, DSS downregulates SiRT1 expression, leading to destabilization of β-TrCP1 and upregulation of Snail1, accompanied by reduced expression of E-cadherin, Occludin, and Claudin-1, consequently resulting in increased epithelial permeability and inflammation. The deregulated SIRT1-β-TrCP1-Snail1-Occludin/Claudin-1/E-cadherin pathway correlates with human IBD. Conclusions: SIRT1 is pivotal in maintaining the intestinal epithelial barrier integrity via modulation of the β-TrCP1-Snail1-E-cadhein/Occludin/Claudin-1 pathway.

IntroductionAs of 2020, breast cancer has emerged as the predominant cause of cancer incidence globally. Anthracycline-based chemotherapy serves as a crucial element in the treatment regimen for breast cancer. However, these anthracycline-based drugs are associated with cardiac toxicity. This study represents the first clinical quantitative analysis aimed at accurately determining the incidences of arrhythmia and abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, thereby providing valuable data to bolster clinical drug usage and monitoring.MethodsA systematic search was conducted across multiple databases including CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. The incidence of combined arrhythmias in breast cancer patients and the associated heterogeneity were calculated using either a random effect model or a fixed effect model. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA16.ResultsThe study encompassed a total of 37 articles, which included 5705 breast cancer patients undergoing anthracycline treatment. Among these patients, 2257 developed arrhythmias. The meta-analysis revealed that the incidence of anthracycline-associated arrhythmias and abnormal ECG changes in breast cancer patients was 0.41 (0.37, 0.44). Subgroup analysis indicated that the incidence of ST-T segment change was 0.19 (0.15, 0.23), the incidence of conduction block was 0.04 (0.02, 0.05), the incidence of premature beats was 0.09 (0.07, 0.11), and the incidence of atrial fibrillation was 0.04 (0.00, 0.12). Additional results are presented in Table 3.ConclusionThis pioneering study accurately assesses the incidence of arrhythmias in breast cancer patients treated with anthracyclines. The findings provide clinicians with valuable insights into understanding and managing the cardiac toxicity associated with such treatment. Moreover, this study lays the foundation for future research exploring the mechanisms underlying these arrhythmias and potential preventative strategies.
