Abstract

One of the basic motivations of the KLOE and KLOE-2 collaborations is the test of fundamental symmetries and the search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model via the hadronic and leptonic decays of ground-state mesons and via their production in the fusion of virtual gamma quanta exchanged between colliding electrons and positrons. Abstract

This document reviews the physics program of the KLOE-2 detector at DA$\Phi$NE upgraded in energy and provides a simple solution to run the collider above the $\phi$-peak (up to 2, possibly 2.5 GeV). It is shown how a precise measurement of the multihadronic cross section in the energy region up to 2 (possibly 2.5) GeV would have a major impact on the tests of the Standard Model through a precise determination of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the effective fine-structure constant at the $M_Z$ scale. With a luminosity of about $10^{32}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, DA$\Phi$NE upgraded in energy can perform a scan in the region from 1 to 2.5 GeV in one year by collecting an integrated luminosity of 20 pb$^{-1}$ (corresponding to a few days of data taking) for single point, assuming an energy step of 25 MeV. A few years of data taking in this region would provide important tests of QCD and effective theories by $\gamma\gamma$ physics with open thresholds for pseudo-scalar (like the $\eta'$), scalar ($f_0,f'_0$, etc...) and axial-vector ($a_1$, etc...) mesons; vector-mesons spectroscopy and baryon form factors; tests of CVC and searches for exotics. We report the measurement of the ratio $\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma)/\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0)$ analyzing a large sample of $\phi \to \eta \gamma$ decays recorded with the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE $e^+ e^-$ collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb$^{-1}$. The $\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma$ process is supposed to proceed both via a resonant contribution, mediated by the $\rho$ meson, and a non resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. The presence of the direct term affects the partial width value. Our result $R_{\eta}=\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \gamma)/\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0)= 0.1838\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0030_{syst}$ is in agreement with a recent CLEO measurement, which differs by more 3 $\sigma$ from the average of previous results. Abstract

The processes $e^+e^-\to e^+e^-X$, with $X$ being either the $\eta$ meson or $\pi^0\pi^0$, are studied at DA$\Phi$NE, with $e^+e^-$ beams colliding at $\sqrt{s}\simeq1$ GeV, below the $\phi$ resonance peak. The data sample is from an integrated luminosity of 240 pb$^{-1}$, collected by the KLOE experiment without tagging of the outgoing $e^+e^-$. Abstract

A ��-factory offers the possibility to select pure kaon beams. Neutral kaons from �� ��� KSKL are produced in a pure J PC = 1- quantum state. Detection of a kaon at large (small) times tags a KS (KL). This allows to perform precise measurement of kaon properties, as for example lifetime, and to study time evolution of neutral kaon system. The distribution of ��t, the difference between the two neutral kaon decay times, where both kaons decay into a ��+��- pair, provides unique opportunities for testing quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry. Using the full 2004-2005 data sample (L = 1.5fb-1) collected with the KLOE detector at DAF��NE, the Frascati e+e- collider, we update results of quantum mechanics and CPT invariance tests. We are finalizing the determination K S lifetimes using about 1/3 the whole KLOE data set. Abstract

Frozen microspheres of hydrogen (pellets) will be one of the target types for the future hadron physics experiment PANDA at FAIR (GSI, Darmstadt, Germany) []. Pellets with a diameter of 25- μm are generated about 3 meters above the interaction region, to which they travel with a velocity around 80 m/s inside a narrow pipe. The interaction region is defined by the overlap of the pellet stream and the accelerator beam and has a size of a few millimeters. One would like to know the interaction point more precisely, to have better possibilities to reconstruct particle tracks and events e.g. in charmonium decay studies. One would also like to suppress background events that do not originate in a pellet, but e.g. may occur in rest gas, that is present in the beam pipe. A solution is provided by the presented pellet tracking system together with a target operation mode that provides one and only one pellet in the interaction region most of the time. The goal is to track individual pellets in order to know their position with a resolution of a few tenths of a millimeter at the time of an interaction. The system must also be highly efficient and provide tracking information for essentially all pellets that pass the interaction region. Abstract

Abstract: Exclusive measurements of the reaction have been performed at CELSIUS/WASA at energies from threshold up to . Total and differential cross sections have been obtained. Here we concentrate on energies , where the ΔΔ excitation becomes the leading process. No evidence is found for a significant ABC effect beyond that given by the conventional t-channel ΔΔ excitation. This holds also for the double-pionic fusion to the quasibound 2He. The data are compared to model predictions, which are based on both π- and ρ-exchange. Total and differential cross sections are at variance with these predictions and call for a profound modification of the ρ-exchange. A phenomenological modification allowing only a small ρ-exchange contribution leads to a quantitative description of the data. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: We report on the activity of CERN and INFN-LNF groups on the development of large area GEM detectors. The two groups work together within the RD51 Collaboration, to aim at the development of Micro-pattern Gas detectors technologies. The vast request for large area foils by the GEM community has driven a change in the manufacturing procedure by the TS-DEM-PMT laboratory, needed to overcome the previous size limitation of . Now a single-mask technology is used allowing foils to be made as large as . The limitation in the short size, due to the definite width of the raw material, can be overcome by splicing more foils together. A GEM detector with the new single-mask foil has been tested with X-rays and the results are shown. Possible future applications for large area GEM are the TOTEM experiment upgrade at CERN, and the KLOE-2 experiment at the Dafne -factory in Frascati. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The cross section for the reaction has been measured at a beam energy of 1450 MeV using the WASA detector at the CELSIUS storage ring. The 3He was detected in coincidence with four photons from the decays of the two mesons. The data indicate that the production mechanism involves the formation of the isobar. Although the beam energy does not allow the full peak of this resonance to be seen, the invariant mass distributions of all three pairs of final particles are well reproduced by a phase space Monte Carlo simulation weighted with the p-wave factor of the square of the momentum in the system. Abstract: Exclusive measurements of the reaction have been carried out at at the CELSIUS storage ring using the WASA detector. The isovector channel exhibits no enhancement at low invariant ππ masses, i.e. no ABC effect. Therefore this most basic isovector double-pionic fusion reaction qualifies as an ideal test case for the conventional t-channel ΔΔ excitation process. Indeed, the obtained differential distributions reveal the conventional t-channel ΔΔ mechanism as the appropriate reaction process, which also accounts for the observed energy dependence of the total cross section. In contrast to the case of ϕ-meson production, the ω mesons are found to be unpolarised. Abstract: The ABC effect–an intriguing low-mass enhancement in the invariant mass spectrum–is known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear fusion reactions. First exclusive measurements carried out at CELSIUS-WASA for the fusion reactions leading to d or 3He reveal this effect to be a -channel phenomenon associated with the formation of a system in the intermediate state and combined with a resonance-like behavior in the total cross-section. Together with the observation that the differential distributions do not change in shape over the resonance region the features fulfill the criteria of an isoscalar s-channel resonance in and systems, if the two emitted nucleons are bound. It obviously is robust enough to survive in nuclei as a dibaryonic resonance configuration. In this context also the phenomenon of resonances is reexamined. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The reaction pn → dπ0π0 constitutes the most fundamental system for the study of the ABC effect - a puzzling threshold enhancement in the ππ invariant mass spectrum of the ππ system in double-pionic fusion to nuclear bound states. The first exclusive measurements of this reaction have now been carried out at CELSIUS-WASA. They exhibit a striking low-mass enhancement in the ππ invariant mass spectrum, prove it to be a σ-channel phenomenon and falsify conventional theoretical models, which predict an associated high-mass enhancement not present in the new exclusive data. In the kinematically complete data sample we observe a ΔΔ excitation, where the interaction between the two Δ obviously plays a crucial role for the generation of the ππ low-mass enhancement.
