Abstract

A measurement of the ground state β‐decay branching ratio of 62Ga has been made as part of a program of high‐precision superallowed Fermi β decay studies at the ISAC radioactive beam facility. The experiment was conducted by detecting γ rays and β particles from the decay of 62Ga using the 8π γ‐ray spectrometer and the SCEPTAR plastic scintillator array.

Abstract

The CLARA-PRISMA setup is a powerful tool for spectroscopic studies of neutron-rich nuclei produced in multi-nucleon transfer and deep-inelastic reactions. It combines the large acceptance spectrometer PRISMA with the gamma-ray array CLARA. At present, the ancillary heavy-ion detector DANTE, based on Micro-Channel Plates to be installed at the CLARA-PRISMA setup, is being constructed at LNL. DANTE will open the possibility of measuring gamma-gamma-Doppler-corrected coincidences for the events outside the acceptance of PRISMA. In this presentation, it is described the heavy-ion detector DANTE, as well as the performances of the first prototype.

Abstract

High‐spin states in 3674Kr38 were studied using the 40Ca(40Ca,α2p)74Kr fusion evaporation reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV with GAMMASPHERE and MICROBALL and at a beam energy of 185 MeV with EUROBALL and ISIS multi‐detector arrays. Lifetimes of the high‐spin states for the ground‐state band and the favoured negative‐parity band have been determined using the Doppler‐shift attenuation method. The deduced transition quadrupole moments show a marginal decrease as a function of spin, suggesting that the rotational bands do not terminate at the maximum spin Imax.

Abstract

The population of metastable states produced in relativistic‐energy fragmentation of a 238U beam has been measured. For states with high angular momentum, I=17ℏ and I=21.5ℏ, a higher population than expected has been observed, with the discrepancy increasing with angular momentum. By considering two sources for the angular momentum, related to single‐particle and collective motions, a much improved description of the experimental results can be obtained. In addition, new results on the structure of 208Fr, 211Ra and 216Ac are reported.

Abstract

The 8π spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC consists of 20 Compton-suppressed germanium detectors and various auxiliary devices. The Ge array, once used for studies of nuclei at high angular momentum, has been transformed into the world's most powerful device dedicated to radioactive-decay studies. Many improvements in the spectrometer have been made, including a high-throughput data acquisition system, installation of a moving tape collector, incorporation of an array of 20 plastic scintillators for β-particle tagging, 5 Si(Li) detectors for conversion electrons, and 10 BaF detectors for fast-lifetime measurements. Experiments can be performed where data from all detectors are collected simultaneously, resulting in a very detailed view of the nucleus through radioactive decay. A number of experimental programmes have been launched that take advantage of the versatility of the spectrometer, and the intense beams available at TRIUMF-ISAC. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract

This contribution reports on the results of an experiment to study the near‐yrast states in selenium‐ and osmium‐like nuclei, following their population in thick‐target, multinucleon transfer reactions between an 82Se beam and a 192Os target. The experimental results for the level scheme for 84Se are presented together with investigations into the use of multi‐dimensional gamma‐ray energy gating to investigate angular momentum population in such heavy‐ion binary reactions.

Abstract

Three rotational bands in 74Kr were studied up to (in one case one transition short of) the maximum spin I(max) of their respective single-particle configurations. Their lifetimes have been determined using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The deduced transition quadrupole moments reveal a modest decrease, but far from a complete loss of collectivity at the maximum spin I(max). This feature, together with the results of mean field calculations, indicates that the observed bands do not terminate at I = I(max).

Abstract

High-precision measurements of the half-life and \ensuremath{\beta}-branching ratios for the ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ decay of $^{26}\mathrm{Na}$ to $^{26}\mathrm{Mg}$ have been measured in \ensuremath{\beta}-counting and \ensuremath{\gamma}-decay experiments, respectively. A 4\ensuremath{\pi} proportional counter and fast tape transport system were employed for the half-life measurement, whereas the \ensuremath{\gamma} rays emitted by the daughter nucleus $^{26}\mathrm{Mg}$ were detected with the $8\ensuremath{\pi}$ \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray spectrometer, both located at TRIUMF's isotope separator and accelerator radioactive beam facility. The half-life of $^{26}\mathrm{Na}$ was determined to be ${T}_{1/2}=1.07128\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.00013\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.00021\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{s}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The logft values derived from these experiments are compared with theoretical values from a full sd-shell model calculation.

Abstract

High-spin states in Kr-76(36)40 have been populated in the Ca-40(Ca-40,4p)Kr-76 fusion-evaporation reaction at abeam energy of 165 MeV and studied using the Gammasphere and Microball multidetector arrays. The ground-state band and two signature-split negative parity bands of Kr-76 have been extended to similar to 30 (h) over bar. Lifetime measurements. using the Doppler-shift attenuation method show that the transition quadrupole moment of these three bands decrease as they approach their maximum-spin states. Two signatures of a new rotational structure with remarkably rigid rotational behavior have been identified. The high-spin properties of these rotational bands are analyzed within the framework of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. (Less)

Abstract

A systematic study of the population probabilities of nanosecond and microsecond isomers produced following the projectile fragmentation of U-238 at 750 MeV/nucleon has been undertaken at the SIS/FRS facility at GSI. Approximately 15 isomeric states in neutron-deficient nuclei around A similar to 190 were identified and the corresponding. isomeric ratios determined. The results are compared with a model based on the statistical abrasion-ablation description of relativistic fragmentation and simple assumptions concerning gamma cascades in the final nucleus (sharp cutoff). This model represents an upper limit for the population of isomeric states in relativistic projectile fragmentation. When the decay properties of the states above the isomer are taken into account, as opposed to the sharp cutoff approximation, a good agreement between the experimental and calculated angular momentum population is obtained.

Abstract

A multinucleon transfer reaction between a thin self-supporting Pt-198(78) target and an 850 MeV Xe-136(54) beam has been used to populate and study the structure of the N=80 isotone Ba-136(56). Making use of time-correlated gamma-ray spectroscopy, evidence for an I-pi=(10(+)) isomeric state has been found with a measured half-life of 91+/-2 ns. Prompt-delayed correlations have also enabled the tentative, measurement of the near-yrast states which lie above the isomer. Shell-model calculations suggest that the isomer has a structure which can be assigned predominantly as (nuh(11/2))(10+)(-2). The results are discussed in terms of standard and pair-truncated shell-model calculations, and compared to the even-Z N=80 isotones ranging from Sn-130(50) to Er-148(68). A qualitative explanation of the observed dramatic decrease in the B(E2:10(+)-->8(+)) value for the N=80 isotones at Ba-136 is given in terms of the increasing single-hole energy of the h(11/2) neutron configuration as the proton subshell is filled. The angular momentum transfer to the binary fragments in the reaction has also been investigated in terms of the average total gamma-ray fold versus the scattering angle of the recoils.

Abstract

The present work reports on the 76195Os isotope, which is the most neutron‐rich osmium isotope for which transitions have been measured. It has been populated following a multi‐nucleon transfer reaction between a thin 78198Pt target and an 850‐MeV 54136Xe beam. Evidence from γ‐ray coincidences has been found for an Iπ = (272−) isomeric state with a measured half‐life of 26 ± 9ns.

Abstract

The structure of stable and neutron‐rich nuclei with Z∼42 and N∼58 have been studied following binary heavy‐ion reactions between a 136Xe beam and a thin, self‐supporting 100Mo target. Discrete states at spins of 20ℏ and above have been identified and these data allow both gamma‐ray fold and binary‐fragment particle angular distribiution analyses to be made. On the basis of these results, suggestions are made for future directions of this research extending to higher spin states in this region where more exotic nuclear shapes are predicted.

Abstract

Multinucleon transfer reactions between a thin 100Mo target and a 136Xe beam at an energy of 700 MeV have been used to investigate the evolution of structure with increasing angular momentum in a range of nuclei with A∼100. The use of kinematically complete experiments coupled with isomer tagging allow the selection of specific exit channels. The evolution from quasi‐vibrational states at low spins to quasi‐rotational structures following the population of a low‐Ω, ‘rotationally aligned’ h11/2 neutron configuration is demonstrated to be a standard feature of the region using the so‐called E‐Gamma Over Spin (E‐GOS) empirical prescription. This treatment is extended to odd‐A nuclei.

Abstract

The near-yrast states of $^{99,100}\mathrm{Mo}$ have been studied following their population via a binary reaction between a $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$ beam and a thin, self-supporting $^{100}\mathrm{Mo}$ target. The yrast sequence in $^{100}\mathrm{Mo}$ has been extended to a tentative spin∕parity $({20}^{+})$, while the decoupled band built on the ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={\frac{11}{2}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ isomeric state in $^{99}\mathrm{Mo}$ has been extended through the first alignment up to a tentative spin∕parity of $({\frac{43}{2}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$. The results are compared with self-consistent, cranked-mean-field calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential. The alignment systematics of the intruder ${h}_{11∕2}$ bands in the $N=57$ isotones from Mo $(Z=42)$ to Cd $(Z=48)$ and the yrast sequences in their $N=58$ even-even neighbors are discussed. An overall picture emerges, where the alignment properties evolve from being due to positive-parity neutrons in the $_{48}^{105}\mathrm{Cd}$ to predominantly ${({g}_{9∕2})}^{2}$ proton crossings closer to the $Z=40$ subshell. Qualitatively, this can be explained by an increase in the quadrupole deformation and a simultaneous lowering of the proton Fermi surface in the ${g}_{9∕2}$ shell with decreasing proton number. These data provide excellent examples of rotational-alignment phenomena in weakly deformed nuclei.

Abstract

The main aim of this study was a deeper understanding of the nuclear structure properties of the soft dipole modes in 140 Ce, excited via inelastic scattering of weakly bound 17 O projectiles. An important aim was to investigate the ‘splitting’ of the PDR into two parts: a low-energy isoscalar component dominated by neutron-skin oscillations and a higher-energy component lying on the tail of the giant dipole resonance of a rather isovector character. Abstract

Excited states in the exotic N = 34 isotope 54Ca have been measured for the first time via in-beam ?-ray spectroscopy with proton-knockout reactions from 55Sc and 56Ti radioactive beams on a Be reaction target at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, Japan. A strong candidate for the transition from the first 2+ state to the 0+ ground state has been identified, in addition to several other weaker transitions. The structure of the N = 33 isotope 53Ca has also been investigated from the same data. Preliminary ?-ray energy spectra for 54Ca and 53Ca will be presented and the significance of the N = 34 subshell closure will be examined. Predictions of several shell-model interactions performed in the fp model space will be discussed in light of the new results.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL/VAMOS/EXOGAM; International audience; Lifetimes of first 4+ and 6+ states have been measured in neutron-rich isotopes of Zr, Mo, Ru and Pd using the recoil distance Doppler shift method at GANIL. The nuclei were produced through a fusion-fission reaction in inverse kinematics. The fission fragments were fully identified in the large-acceptance VAMOS spectrometer and -rays were detected in coincidence with the EXOGAM germanium array. Lifetimes of excited states in the range of 1-100 ps were measured with the Cologne plunger. Preliminary lifetime results are presented as well as a discussion on the evolution of the collectivity in this region.

Abstract

Neutron-rich Co isotopes from N = 34 to 40 were studied through multinucleon transfer by bombarding a 238U target with a 460 MeV 70Zn beam at the Legnaro National Laboratories. Gamma-recoil coincidences were recorded identifying the ions by using a high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer (PRISMA) and detecting the gamma radiation by using an array of HPGe clover detectors (CLARA). The results are discussed in comparison with the predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations.

Abstract

The gamma decay of neutron-rich nuclei around 48Ca was measured at Legnaro National Laboratory with the PRISMA-CLARA setup, using the multi-nucleon transfer reaction 48Ca on 64Ni at 282 MeV. Evidence is found for a large spin alignment which allows to use angular distributions and polarizations of gamma rays to firmly establish, for the first time, spin and parities of several excited states. In the one neutron transfer channels, 49Ca and 47Ca, states arising by coupling a single particle to the 3− phonon of 48Ca are observed, showing the robustness of nuclear collectivity in rather light systems. The work demonstrates the feasibility of complete in-beam γ-spectroscopy with heavy-ion transfer reactions and provides a method that can be further exploited in the future with heavy targets and radioactive beams.

Abstract

Large acceptance magnetic spectrometers, such as PRISMA installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, gave a further boost to the renewed interest for multinucleon transfer reactions in the last decade. The large solid angles of these devices and the high resolving powers of their detection systems allowed to investigate the transfer process around and well below the Coulomb barrier and to perform nuclear structure studies in several mass regions of the nuclide chart when coupled with large γ-ray arrays such as CLARA. Selected results obtained with the PRISMA-CLARA set-up in odd argon isotopes populated by using the multinucleon transfer process and in sub- barrier transfer measurements are presented in this contribution. The status of an ancillary detector which is being developed for PRISMA in order to perform kinematical coincidence measurements is also reported.

Abstract

Neutron-rich nuclei beyond N = 126 in the lead region were populated by fragmenting a 238U beam at 1 GeV A on a Be target and then separated by the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. Their isomeric decays were observed, enabling study of the shell structure of neutron-rich nuclei around the Z=82 shell closure. Some preliminary results are reported in this paper.

Abstract

Using the 20Ne + 12C fusion-evaporation reaction at E20Ne = 33 MeV and the multidetector array GASP in conjuction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector, angular correlations of coincident pairs of γ transitions and lifetimes in mirror nuclei 31S and 31P have been measured at the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. A comparison of the determined B(E1) strengths of the analog mirror 7/2− → 5/2+ transitions indicates the presence of a violation of isospin symmetry.

Abstract

Multinucleon transfer cross sections in the system 40 Ca+ 96 Zr have been measured at bombarding energies ranging from the Coulomb barrier to ~ 25% below. Target-like (lighter) recoils in inverse kinematics have been completely identif ed in A,Z and Q-value with the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The experimental slopes of the neutron transfer probabilities at large internuclear separation are consistent with the values derived from the binding energies. A phenomenological interpretation of the transfer probabilities indicates the presence of enhanced values for the even number of neutron transfers.

Abstract

The Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in 42Ca with a focus on a presumably superdeformed band was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy using the \gamma -ray spectrometer AGATA Demonstrator coupled to the DANTE charged particle detector array. First results are presented, including the refinement of the 42Ca level scheme.

Abstract

We report on g-factor measurements of the 19/2+ T1/2=4.5(3) μs isomer in 127Sn and the 10+ T1/2=2.69(23) μs isomer in 128Sn. These isomers were produced and spin-aligned in relativistic heavy-ion fragmentation at GSI and were selected and separated by the GSI fragment separator (FRS). The γ-rays of the isomeric decay were detected by the RISING γ-ray spectrometer. The method of time-differential perturbed angular distributions was utilized. The measured g-factors, g(19/2+; 127Sn)=− 0.17(2) and g(10+; 128Sn)=− 0.20(4), are compared with shell model calculations. The measured g-factors confirm the predominantly νh11/2− 2 and ν(s1/2− 1h11/2−2) character of the 10+ and 19/2− isomers in 128Sn and 127Sn, respectively. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the method for similar measurements in exotic neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

Neutron rich nuclei around 48Ca have been measured with the CLARA–PRISMA setup, making use of 48Ca on 64Ni binary reactions, at 5.9 MeV/A. Angular distributions of γ rays give evidence, in several transfer channels, for a large spin alignment (≈70%) perpendicular to the reaction plane, making it possible to firmly establish spin and parities of the excited states. In the case of 49Ca, states arising from different types of particle–core couplings are, for the first time, unambiguously identified on basis of angular distribution, polarization and lifetime measurements. Shell model and particle–vibration coupling calculations are used to pin down the nature of the states. Evidence is found for the presence, in the same excitation energy region, of two types of coupled states, i.e. single particle coupled to either 48Ca or 50Ca simple configurations, and particle–vibration coupled states based on the 3− phonon of 48Ca., This work was supported by the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare and partially by the Spanish MICINN (ACI2009-1070 bilateral action) and Generalitat Valenciana (Grant Nos. Abstract

Nuclei produced via multineutron transfer channels have been studied in 90 Zr + 208 Pb close to the Coulomb barrier energy in a fragment- γ coincident measurement employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer coupled to the CLARA γ -array. The selective properties of the reaction mechanism have been discussed in terms of states and their strength excited in the neutron transfer channels leading to 89–94 Zr isotopes. A strong population of yrast states, with energies up to ∼7.5 MeV has been observed.

Abstract

Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be used to populate nuclei with relatively large neutron excess. Recently, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, a setup consisting on an efficient $\gamma$-ray detection system CLARA coupled to the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, capable of tracking the trajectories of the reaction products, has been assembled. During the first year of activity, the experiments performed with the CLARA-PRISMA setup, have been focused mainly on the nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei. New excited states of the nuclei Ga-81, Ge-82 and As-83 at N=50 shell closure have been identified by means of the Se-82+U-238 reaction. Abstract

A four channel VME card with 14 bit, 80 MHz digitizers and powerful on-board processing has been designed, built and used in tests of digital pulse processing techniques for gamma-ray tracking. This paper explains the background (rationale for the project), describes the VME card (known as the GRT4) and presents a 64 channel GRT4 digitizing system which was used to instrument two segmented Germanium detectors during in-beam tests. Results obtained using the GRT4 card are presented as well as some applications.

Abstract

International audience; Recent experimental and theoretical advances have been achieved in the field of multinucleon transfer reactions among heavy-ions. Detailed A,Z and Q-value distributions allow to identify the relevant degrees of freedom acting in the transfer process. The advent of the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the large $\gamma$-array CLARA was a major experimental breakthrough, as reaction mechanism and nuclear structure studies of neutron-rich nuclei can be performed via $\gamma$-particle coincidences. Examples of recent studies, mainly focused on the reaction mechanism, are presented.

Abstract

The β decay of the N = 127 isotone 206Au has been investigated at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung laboratory within the rare isotope investigations at GSI Collaboration. From the experimental data, both its half-life and the level structure of the N = 126 daughter nucleus 206Hg have been extracted. On the basis of the new results, the systematics of Au β-decay half-lives beyond the N = 126 shell closure is discussed. In addition, the interplay between allowed Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden transitions in the N > 126, Z < 82 mass region is reviewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
