We give an overview of the current status and scientific goals of VERITAS, a proposed hexagonal array of seven 10 m aperture imaging Cherenkov telescopes. The selected site is Montosa Canyon (1390 m a.s.l.) at the Whipple Observatory, Arizona. Each telescope, of 12 m focal length, will initially be equipped with a 499 element photomultiplier camera covering a 3.5 degree field of view. A central station will initiate the readout of 500 MHz FADCs upon receipt of multiple telescope triggers. The minimum detectable flux sensitivity will be 0.5% of the Crab Nebula flux at 200 GeV. Detailed simulations of the array's performance are presented elsewhere at this meeting. Stereoscopic viewing of TeV gamma-ray air showers with systems of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) allows to reconstruct the origin of individual primary particles with an accuracy of 0.1 degree or better. The shower impact point can be determined within 15 meters. To actually achieve this resolution, the pointing of the telescopes of an IACT system needs to be controlled with high precision. For the HEGRA IACT system, a procedure to calibrate telescope pointing was established, using bright stars distributed over the sky as references. On the basis of these measurements, one determines parameters of a correction function which is valid for the complete hemisphere. The HEGRA--collaboration is operating a system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to search for sources of TeV-gamma-rays. Air showers are observed in stereoscopic mode with several telescopes simultaneously. To trigger the telescope system a versatile two-level trigger scheme has been implemented, which allows a significant reduction of the energy threshold with respect to single telescopes. The technical implementation of this trigger scheme and the performance of the trigger system are described. Results include the dependence of single- and multi-telescope trigger rates on the trigger thresholds, on the orientation of the telescopes, and on the type of the primary particle., Comment: 17 Pages, 10 figures, Latex

In order to better utilize the information contained in the shower images generated by imaging Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) equipped with cameras with small pixels, images are fit to a parametrization of image shapes gained from Monte Carlo simulations, treating the shower direction, impact point, and energy as free parameters. Monte Carlo studies for a system of IACTs predict an improvement of order 1.5 in the angular resolution. The fitting technique can also be applied to single-telescope images; simulations indicate that the shower direction in space can be reconstructed event-by-event with a resolution of 0.16 deg. to 0.20 deg., allowing to generate genuine source maps. The sensitivity of an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescope is calibrated by shining, from a distant pulsed monochromatic light source, a defined photon flux onto the mirror. The light pulse is captured and reconstructed by the telescope in an identical fashion as real Cherenkov light. The intensity of the calibration light pulse is monitored via a calibrated sensor at the telescope; in order to account for the lower sensitivity of this sensor compared to the Cherenkov telescope, an attenuator is inserted in the light source between the measurements with the calibrated sensor, and with the telescope. Imaging air Cherenkov telescopes are usually triggered on a coincidence of two or sometimes more pixels, with discriminator thresholds in excess of 20 photoelectrons applied for each pixel. These thresholds required to suppress night-sky background are significantly higher than expected on the basis of a Poisson distribution in the number of night-sky photoelectrons generated during the characteristic signal integration time. We studied noise trigger rates under controlled conditions using an artificial background light source. Large tails in the PMT amplitude response to single photoelectrons are identified as a dominant contribution to noise triggers.
