Abstract

responding is controlled by features of stimuli that are common to all the class members. It is argued that an analysis of substitution of stimulus functions is needed to account for the acquisition of functional classes of different varieties. We examined the acquisition of classes of comparison stimuli presented in a standard matching to sample (MTS) preparation by exposing participants to three tests in which a contextual cue provided the basis for the formation of these classes. In this preparation the equivalence training and test phases served as a masking task that prevented the interference of naming processes or the development of rules describing the commonalities among target class members (comparison stimuli). Most of the participants showed responding with respect to one or more comparison classes even in the absence of specific operant training. Findings suggest that the function shared by a given set of stimuli may be acquired by another stimulus in the absence of operant reinforcement and without the involvement of verbal rules., Se habla de adquisición de clases funcionales cuando el comportamiento es controlado por aquellas propiedades de los estímulos que son comunes a todos los miembros de la clase. Un análisis en términos de sustitución de funciones es necesario para explicar la adquisición de varios tipos de clases funcionales. En este estudio se examinó la adquisición de clases de estímulos comparadores en un entrenamiento estándar de igualación a la muestra, mediante la inclusión de un estímulo contextual diferente para cada clase de comparadores. Las fases de entrenamiento y pruebas de equivalencia sirvieron como una tarea de enmascaramiento para prevenir la interferencia de respuestas verbales con respecto a las relaciones entre el estímulo contextual y los comparadores durante el entrenamiento. Hubo respuestas respecto a una o más clases de comparadores para la mayoría de los participantes. Los hallazgos indican que la función compartida por los miembros de una clase puede ser adquirida por un estímulo arbitrario en ausencia de refuerzo y de respuestas verbales.

The impact of public and private feedback on the task completion, time allocation and time distribution of graduate students is studied. Results neither private nor public feedback had any impact on task completion. Feedback on task completion had indirect positive effects on time allocation and time distribution when students' activities a single domain were evaluated. However, no indirect positive effects were observed when students were evaluated based on stipend- and practicum-related activities.

Horne and Lowe's paper on verbal behavior offers an imprecise explanation of listening and understanding. For instance, their notion of listening as aural activity is not accurately differentiated from listening with understanding. Horne and Lowe do not view as understanding the occurrence of listener behavior in a verbal episode. They raise the concept of comprehension only when the listener speaks. This gives rise to confusion as to whether naming is an act of speaking or an act of listening, and whether or not listening involves understanding.

261. Double substitution of non-linguistic perceptual functions

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study captured substitution of non-linguistic perceptual functions without awareness. Eighty participants were divided into four groups. All groups were exposed to a respondent-type training procedure in which nine letters were paired with words; four of those words were homophones to numbers for the experimental groups and not for the control groups. Following training, all groups were exposed to a testing condition. One experimental and one control group were given a series of simple mathematical problems containing an unknown shown as a letter. Their task was to substitute the letter for a number. The other experimental and control groups were presented with a simultaneous matching-to-sample test. The results were analyzed in terms of concordance between the number selected and the correspondent homophone word that had previously been trained. Significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups for two of the four homophone numbers, demonstrating substitution of perceptual functions.

ABSTRACTBased upon B. F. Skinner’s Radical Behaviorism, feelings are most often considered to be private events by behavior analysts, constituting biological happenings. This paper describes conceptual issues with the Skinner’s public–private dichotomy, considering the organismic participant, the relational property of psychological events, the concept of the whole organism, and the environmental participant. After considering these issues, practical problems related to the public–private dichotomy are considered, and finally, an interbehavioral alternative to the conceptualization of feeling events is proposed. The distinguishing features of feeling events relative to other psychological events are highlighted.

Like all natural sciences, behavior science has much to offer toward an understanding of the world. The extent to which the promise of behavior science is realized, though, depends upon the extent to which we keep what we know before us. This paper considers fundamental concepts in behavior science, including the concepts of behavior, stimulation, setting conditions, and language. In considering these concepts, we revisit comments from B. F. Skinner and J. R. Kantor and also consider some areas of behavior analytic research and the implications they have for reconsidering long-held assumptions about the analysis of behavior. While the consideration of private events is central to Skinner's Radical Behaviorism, Skinner's perspective on the topic of private events is not universally accepted within the behavioral community. At least 3 alternatives to Skinner's position have been purported, among them Baum's molar perspective, Rachlin's teleological perspective, and Hayes and Fryling's interbehavioral position. This paper considers the similarities and differences among these alternatives to Skinner's analysis of private events from the perspective of interbehaviorism and interbehavioral psychology.
