This study demonstrates a new method for simultaneously measuring both the angle of the principal axis and the phase retardation of the linear birefringence in optical materials. We used a circular common-path interferometer (polariscope) as the basic structure modulated by an electro-optic (EO) modulator. An algorithm was developed to simultaneously measure the principal axis and the phase retardation of a lambda/4 or lambda/8 plate as a sample. In the case of a lambda/4 plate, the average absolute error of the principal axis is approximately 3.77 degrees, and that of the phase retardation is approximately 1.03 degrees (1.09%). The retardation error is within the 5% uncertainty range of a commercial wave plate. Fortunately, the nonlinear error caused by the reflection phase retardation of the beam splitter dose not appear in the new system. Therefore the error could be attributed to misalignment and defects in the EO modulator or the other optical components. As for the repeatability of this new common-path heterodyne interferometer, the average deviation for the principal axis is 0.186 degrees and the phase retardation is 0.356 degrees. For the stability, the average deviation for the principal axis is 0.405 degrees and the phase retardation is 0.635 degrees. The resolution of this new system is estimated to be approximately 0.5 degrees, and the principal axis and phase retardation could be measured up to pi and 2pi, respectively, without ambiguity.

The marine sponge Dysidea avara contained avarol (1) and avarone (2). Avarol on acylation yielded 2',5'-O-dibenzoylavarol (3); 2,5'-O-(4-chlorobenzoyl)avarol (4); 2,5'-O-dicinnamoylavarol (5); 2,5'-O-(4-bromobenzoyl)avarol(6); 2',5'-O-dioctanoylavarol (7); 2',5'-O-(4-fluorobenzoyl)avarol (8) and diacetylavarol (9). The structural elucidation of all the compounds 1-9 have been done by spectral analysis. The cytotoxicity of these compounds were also determined and evaluated. Compounds 6 and 9 showed selective cytotoxicity against Hepa (human hepatoma) and KB cell lines respectively.

Objective: TGF-beta plays a key role in wound scarring. This study explored the possibility of using gene therapy to inhibit wound scarring by blocking TGF-beta signaling., Methods: In vitro, human normal dermal fibroblasts were infected with recombinant adenoviruses of truncated TGF-beta receptor II (tTGF-betaRII, 100 pfu/cell) and beta-galactosidase (beta-gal, 100 pfu/cell), and their effects on regulating TGF-beta1 gene expression were analyzed by Northern blot. For gene therapy, beta-gal and tTGF-betaRII viruses (1 x 10(9) pfu)were injected intradermally at left and right side of dorsal skin of newborn Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 15) respectively. A full-thickness incisional wound (0.5 cm long) was created at the injection sites of each rat 2 days post-injection. An incisional wound was similarly created in the middle part of the dorsal skin of tTGF-betaRII transgenic mice (n = 5) and control mice (n = 5). Wound tissues of rats and mice were harvested at various time points post-wounding for histological and immunohistochemical analysis. Scar area in tissue section was measured by Image-Pro Plus software., Results: Over-expression of tTGF-betaRII markedly reduced TGF-beta1 gene expression in dermal fibroblasts. Adenovirus mediated gene expression in skin reached a peak level 2 - 3 days post-injection, and decreased gradually at 5 - 7 days. Two weeks post-wounding, histology and quantitative analysis demonstrated that relative scar area in the wounds of transgenic mice and control mice were 136,969.8 +/- 66,339 and 474,641.6 +/- 227,396 respectively, the scar area of transgenic wounds was 29 percent of control area (P < 0.05). In all rats, wounds transfected with tTGF-betaRII gene healed with much less scarring (relative scar area 128,311.2 +/- 36,764.6) than control wounds (251,189.1 +/- 62,544.7) of the same rat, with a 45% reduction of scar area in average (P < 0.001). In addition, the tTGF-betaRII expression also decreased inflammation and TGF-beta1 production in treated wounds, and promoted the repair of panniculus muscle in treated wounds., Conclusions: Adenovirus mediated over-expression of tTGF-betaRII can block TGF-beta signaling and inhibit wound scarring, and thus can serve as a gene therapy strategy to control wound scarring.

A Gram-positive bacterium with antagonistic activity was isolated from the soil. It has been identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain V656 on the basis of 16S ribosomal DNA analysis and standard bacteriological tests. B. amyloliquefaciens V656 produced antifungal enzymes when it was grown in a medium containing shrimp and crab shell powder (SCSP) of marine waste. The antifungal enzymes displayed chitinase activities. Two extracellular antifungal chitinases (FI and FII) were purified and characterized, and their molecular weights, isoelectric points, pH and thermal stabilities, and antifungal activities were determined. The characteristics of V656 chitinases are similar to those of the known bacterial chitinases in terms of their isoelectric points, thermal instabilities, and lack of lysozyme activity. In contrast to other known bacterial chitinases, the unique characteristics of V656 chitinases include extremely low molecular weights and nearly neutral optimum pH. Furthermore, this is the first report of the isolation of chitinases from B. amyloliquefaciens that are active against fungi.

It is a real challenge to the anesthesiologists to differentiate brachial plexus injury (BPI) from myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). The possibility of MPS should be suspected in a patient with complaints of pain and dysfunction of the upper arm immediately after surgery. Here we report a case of gallstone with cervical ankylosing spondylitis who sustained myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) immediately after open cholecystectomy. We utilized dry needle stimulation to deactivate the trigger point of the pectoris minor muscle and stretching the muscle to relieve the muscle pain after the diagnosis was made. The patient completely recovered 2 weeks later.

A study of antibody prevalence for hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) was carried out in southwestern Vietnam in an area adjacent to a known focus of epidemic HEV transmission. The purpose of this investigation was first to provide a prevalence measure of hepatitis infections, and second to determine the outbreak potential of HEV as a function of the susceptible population. Blood specimens collected from 646 persons in randomly selected village hamlets were examined by an ELISA for anti-HEV IgG and anti-HAV IgG. The prevalences of anti-HEV IgG and anti-HAV IgG were 9% and 97%, respectively. There was a significant increase (P < 0.01) in age-specific anti-HEV IgG. A notable increase in anti-HAV IgG prevalence (P < 0.0001) occurred between child populations 0-4 (64%) and 5-9 (95%) years of age. No evidence of familial clustering of anti-HEV IgG-positive individuals was detected, and household crowding was not associated with the spread of HEV. Boiling of water was found to be of protective value against HEV transmission. A relatively low prevalence of anti-HEV indicates considerable HEV outbreak potential, against a background of 1) poor, water-related hygiene/sanitation, 2) dependence on a (likely human/animal waste)-contaminated Mekong riverine system, and 3) periodic river flooding.
