Abstract

This resource is a single blog post created as part of the Day of Archaeology initiative. The Day of Archaeology project aimed to provide a window into the daily lives of archaeologists from all over the world. The project asked people working, studying or volunteering in the archaeological world to participate in a 'Day of Archaeology' each year by recording their day and sharing it through text, images or video on the Day of Archaeology blog.The project asked anyone with a personal, professional or voluntary interest in archaeology to get involved, and help highlight the reasons why archaeology is vital to protect the past and inform our futures. The resulting Day of Archaeology project archive demonstrates the wide variety of work the archaeological profession undertakes day-to-day across the globe, and helps to raise public awareness of the relevance and importance of archaeology to the modern world.The first ever Day of Archaeology was held in 2011 and, since then, the project had thousands of archaeologists take part in the event, from those working in the field through to specialists working in laboratories and behind computers. The last Day of Archaeology was on Friday 28th July 2017.

The legal position of mental health patients is often unclear because the majority are not sectioned and therefore not covered by legislation covering their confinement and treatment. Nurses have a right to use force when dealing with a patient trying to leave premises when treatment is taking place. Medical officers must be on hand when treatment of a non-consensual nature is being performed on a mental health patient who has not been sectioned.

Abstract

It is essential for all nurses to have a basic understanding of the laws which govern the treatment of mental health patients in the UK. Sectioning of a mental patient may only be permitted if the patient falls into one of four mental disorder categories. The Mental Health Act allows patients to be committed to 28 days sectioning during which time assessments are made by trained psychiatrists and doctors. Relatives of sectioned patients are allowed rights under the Act, relating to discharge and application for treatment.

Abstract

Professional negligence in nursing means that there is a duty of care but the standard of care given falls below that which was expected and, in doing so, the nurse must realise that the action would cause foreseeable damage to the patient. Simply being careless or incompetent does not mean the damage was foreseeable. Damage can relate to property as well as the person. Negligence cases can be defended by claiming a lack of resources, such as time, but good patient records must be available to justify this. A nurse in this situation should write to senior management explaining their argument.

Nurses have a duty to ensure that information about patients remains confidential and they can only disclose it if they have the patient's permission, or if it is required by law, or it is in the public interest. Failure to maintain such confidential information may result in being struck off the professional register, having to pay compensation or dismissal. Information about terrorism has to be given to the police, as does anything which may help to find a driver involved in a traffic accident. Nurses who are unsure about what to do should get advice.

Abstract

An excavation in 2014 at the Adelphi Building in Westminster revealed a remarkable sequence of deposits and timber structures, providing very important evidence of Lundenwic’s Middle Saxon (c.AD 650—850) waterfront. Four successive phases of dismantled waterfront were represented by lines of piles. The piles of the earliest phase of waterfront were reinforced by wattlework, while the later phases of piling probably retained horizontal planking. These waterfronts represent the management of the edge of the estuarine river bank, not extensive reclamation of the foreshore. The earliest structure probably dates to the early or mid-7th century and the latest probably to the early 8th century. Associated with the third phase of waterfront was an Anglo-Saxon gold shilling (thrymsa) of the ‘Two Emperors’ type dating to c.AD 645—65/70 (see Cover). The fifth phase of waterfront was constructed southward of the limit of excavation, but it was represented on site by finds-rich, landward dumping of domestic rubbish. Subsequently a timber building was constructed on site; after it burnt down a series of features were dug and, following their backfilling, a series of external surfaces were constructed, probably during the final quarter of the 8th century or possibly the early 9th century. Abstract

During 2014 and 2015, NASA's Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) mission proceeded successfully through Phase C, Design and Development. An X-ray (0.2-12 keV) astrophysics payload destined for the International Space Station, NICER is manifested for launch in early 2017 on the Commercial Resupply Services SpaceX-11 flight. Its scientific objectives are to investigate the internal structure, dynamics, and energetics of neutron stars, the densest objects in the universe. During Phase C, flight components including optics, detectors, the optical bench, pointing actuators, electronics, and others were subjected to environmental testing and integrated to form the flight payload. A custom-built facility was used to co-align and integrate the X-ray "concentrator" optics and silicon-drift detectors. Ground calibration provided robust performance measures of the optical (at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center) and detector (at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) subsystems, while comprehensive functional tests prior to payload-level environmental testing met all instrument performance requirements. We describe here the implementation of NICER's major subsystems, summarize their performance and calibration, and outline the component-level testing that was successfully applied.
