Abstract

Most indoor 3D scene reconstruction methods focus on recovering 3D geometry and scene layout. In this work, we go beyond this to propose PhotoScene, a framework that takes input image(s) of a scene along with approximately aligned CAD geometry (either reconstructed automatically or manually specified) and builds a photorealistic digital twin with high-quality materials and similar lighting. We model scene materials using procedural material graphs; such graphs represent photorealistic and resolution-independent materials. We optimize the parameters of these graphs and their texture scale and rotation, as well as the scene lighting to best match the input image via a differentiable rendering layer. We evaluate our technique on objects and layout reconstructions from ScanNet, SUN RGB-D and stock photographs, and demonstrate that our method reconstructs high-quality, fully relightable 3D scenes that can be re-rendered under arbitrary viewpoints, zooms and lighting., Comment: Accepted to CVPR 2022; Code is available at https://github.com/ViLab-UCSD/photoscene

Abstract

Calculations of point defect energetics with Density Functional Theory (DFT) can provide valuable insight into several optoelectronic, thermodynamic, and kinetic properties. These calculations commonly use methods ranging from semi-local functionals with a-posteriori corrections to more computationally intensive hybrid functional approaches. For applications of DFT-based high-throughput computation for data-driven materials discovery, point defect properties are of interest, yet are currently excluded from available materials databases. This work presents a benchmark analysis of automated, semi-local point defect calculations with a-posteriori corrections, compared to 245 “gold standard” hybrid calculations previously published. We consider three different a-posteriori correction sets implemented in an automated workflow, and evaluate the qualitative and quantitative differences among four different categories of defect information: thermodynamic transition levels, formation energies, Fermi levels, and dopability limits. We highlight qualitative information that can be extracted from high-throughput calculations based on semi-local DFT methods, while also demonstrating the limits of quantitative accuracy.

Abstract

ImportanceGlioblastoma is the most lethal primary brain cancer. Clinical outcomes for glioblastoma remain poor, and new treatments are needed.ObjectiveTo investigate whether adding autologous tumor lysate-loaded dendritic cell vaccine (DCVax-L) to standard of care (SOC) extends survival among patients with glioblastoma.Design, setting, and participantsThis phase 3, prospective, externally controlled nonrandomized trial compared overall survival (OS) in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma (nGBM) and recurrent glioblastoma (rGBM) treated with DCVax-L plus SOC vs contemporaneous matched external control patients treated with SOC. This international, multicenter trial was conducted at 94 sites in 4 countries from August 2007 to November 2015. Data analysis was conducted from October 2020 to September 2021.InterventionsThe active treatment was DCVax-L plus SOC temozolomide. The nGBM external control patients received SOC temozolomide and placebo; the rGBM external controls received approved rGBM therapies.Main outcomes and measuresThe primary and secondary end points compared overall survival (OS) in nGBM and rGBM, respectively, with contemporaneous matched external control populations from the control groups of other formal randomized clinical trials.ResultsA total of 331 patients were enrolled in the trial, with 232 randomized to the DCVax-L group and 99 to the placebo group. Median OS (mOS) for the 232 patients with nGBM receiving DCVax-L was 19.3 (95% CI, 17.5-21.3) months from randomization (22.4 months from surgery) vs 16.5 (95% CI, 16.0-17.5) months from randomization in control patients (HR = 0.80; 98% CI, 0.00-0.94; P = .002). Survival at 48 months from randomization was 15.7% vs 9.9%, and at 60 months, it was 13.0% vs 5.7%. For 64 patients with rGBM receiving DCVax-L, mOS was 13.2 (95% CI, 9.7-16.8) months from relapse vs 7.8 (95% CI, 7.2-8.2) months among control patients (HR, 0.58; 98% CI, 0.00-0.76; P

Abstract

Therapy-resistant ovarian cancers have a poor prognosis and novel effective treatment options are urgently needed. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of the oncolytic vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) against a panel of patient-derived ovarian cancer cell lines of all epithelial subtypes. Notably, we found that most of the cell lines were sensitive to VSV virotherapy. With the objective of improving treatment efficacy for the oncolytic virus-resistant cell lines, we tested various combinations with ovarian cancer standard of care drugs: olaparib, carboplatin, paclitaxel, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, and gemcitabine. While none of these combinations revealed to be beneficial, further experiments demonstrated that the antiviral interferon pathway was functional in VSV-resistant cell lines. Given that interferons signal through Janus kinase (JAK)-STAT to mediate their antiviral function, we tested combinations of oncolytic VSV with clinically relevant JAK inhibitors. Our results show that combining VSV with various JAK inhibitors, including ruxolitinib, enhances VSV virotherapy and treatment efficacy. Altogether, we show that VSV, either as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with JAK inhibitors provides an effective therapeutic option for ovarian cancer patients.

Abstract

We exploit multi-path fading propagation to improve both the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio and the stability of wireless communications within electromagnetic environments that support rich multipath propagation. Quasi-passive propagation control with multiple binary reconfigurable intelligent surfaces is adopted to control the stationary waves supported by a metallic cavity hosting a software-defined radio link. Results are demonstrated in terms of the error vector magnitude minimization of a quadrature phase-shift modulation scheme under no-line-of-sight conditions. It is found that the magnitude of fluctuation of received symbols is reduced to a stable constellation by increasing the number of individual surfaces, or elements, thus demonstrating channel hardening. By using a second software-defined radio device as a jammer, we demonstrate the ability of the RIS to mitigate the co-channel interference by channel hardening. Abstract

Combining highly coherent spin control with efficient light-matter coupling offers great opportunities for quantum communication and networks, as well as quantum computing. Optically active semiconductor quantum dots have unparalleled photonic properties, but also modest spin coherence limited by their resident nuclei. Here, we demonstrate that eliminating strain inhomogeneity using lattice-matched GaAs-AlGaAs quantum dot devices prolongs the electron spin coherence by nearly two orders of magnitude, beyond 0.113(3) ms. To do this, we leverage the 99.30(5)% fidelity of our optical pi-pulse gates to implement dynamical decoupling. We vary the number of decoupling pulses up to N = 81 and find a coherence time scaling of N^{0.75(2)}. This scaling manifests an ideal refocusing of strong interactions between the electron and the nuclear-spin ensemble, holding the promise of lifetime-limited spin coherence. Our findings demonstrate that the most punishing material science challenge for such quantum-dot devices has a remedy, and constitute the basis for highly coherent spin-photon interfaces.

Abstract

By investigating the vacancy and substitutional defects in monolayer WS$_2$ with hybrid functionals, we find that there is no unique amount of Fock exchange that concurrently satisfies the generalized Koopmans' condition and reproduces the band gap and band-edge positions. Fixing the mixing parameter of Fock exchange based upon the band gap can lead to qualitatively incorrect defect physics in two-dimensional materials. Instead, excellent agreement is achieved with experiment and many-body perturbation theory within $GW$ approximation once the mixing parameters are tuned individually for the defects and the band edges. Abstract

The topology of artificial neural networks has a significant effect on their performance. Characterizing efficient topology is a field of promising research in Artificial Intelligence. However, it is not a trivial task and it is mainly experimented on through convolutional neural networks. We propose a hybrid model which combines the tensor calculus of feed-forward neural networks with Pseudo-Darwinian mechanisms. This allows for finding topologies that are well adapted for elaboration of strategies, control problems or pattern recognition tasks. In particular, the model can provide adapted topologies at early evolutionary stages, and 'structural convergence', which can found applications in robotics, big-data and artificial life.

266. Magnetised Winds in Transition Discs I: 2.5D Global Simulations

Abstract

Protoplanetary discs (PPDs) are cold, dense and weakly ionised environments that witness the planetary formation. Among these discs, transition discs (TDs) are characterised by a wide cavity in the dust and gas distribution. Despite this lack of material, many TDs strongly accrete onto their central star, possibly indicating that a mechanism is driving fast accretion in TDs cavities. The presence of radially extended 'dead zones' in PPDs recently revived the interest in magnetised disc winds (MDWs), where accretion is driven by a large magnetic field. We propose that TDs could be subject to similar winds, explaining their fast-accreting and long-lived cavities. We present the results of the first 2.5D global numerical simulations of TDs harbouring MDWs using the PLUTO code. We impose a cavity in the gas distribution and consider a power law distribution for the large-scale magnetic field strength. We assume weakly ionised discs subject to ambipolar diffusion, as expected in this range of densities and temperatures. Our simulated TDs reach a steady state with an inner cavity and an outer 'standard' disc. The accretion rates remain approximately constant through the entire discs, reaching $10^{-7}~M_\odot/\text{yrs}^{-1}$ for typical surface density values. The MDW launched from the cavity is more magnetised with a much larger lever arm than the MDW launched from the outer disc. The material in the cavity is accreted at sonic velocities, and the cavity itself is rotating at 70% of the Keplerian velocity due to the efficient magnetic braking imposed by the MDW. Overall, our cavity matches the dynamical properties of an inner jet emitting disc (JED) and of magnetically arrested discs (MADs) in black hole physics. Abstract

Rashba materials have appeared as an ideal playground for spin-to-charge conversion in prototype spintronics devices. Among them, $\alpha$-GeTe(111) is a non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric (FE) semiconductor for which a strong spin-orbit interaction gives rise to giant Rashba coupling. Its room temperature ferroelectricity was recently demonstrated as a route towards a new type of highly energy-efficient non-volatile memory device based on switchable polarization. Currently based on the application of an electric field, the writing and reading processes could be outperformed by the use of femtosecond (fs) light pulses requiring exploration of the possible control of ferroelectricity on this timescale. Here, we probe the room temperature transient dynamics of the electronic band structure of $\alpha$-GeTe(111) using time and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES). Our experiments reveal an ultrafast modulation of the Rashba coupling mediated on the fs timescale by a surface photovoltage (SPV), namely an increase corresponding to a 13 % enhancement of the lattice distortion. Abstract

We propose a method to extrapolate a 360{\deg} field of view from a single image that allows for user-controlled synthesis of the out-painted content. To do so, we propose improvements to an existing GAN-based in-painting architecture for out-painting panoramic image representation. Our method obtains state-of-the-art results and outperforms previous methods on standard image quality metrics. To allow controlled synthesis of out-painting, we introduce a novel guided co-modulation framework, which drives the image generation process with a common pretrained discriminative model. Doing so maintains the high visual quality of generated panoramas while enabling user-controlled semantic content in the extrapolated field of view. We demonstrate the state-of-the-art results of our method on field of view extrapolation both qualitatively and quantitatively, providing thorough analysis of our novel editing capabilities. Abstract

Interlayer coupling is strongly implicated in the complex electronic properties of 1$T$-TaS$_2$ , but the interplay between this and electronic correlations remains unresolved. Here, we employ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to reveal the effect of uniaxial strain engineering on the electronic structure and interlayer coupling in 1$T$-TaS$_2$ . The normally insulating ground state is transformed into a correlated-metal phase under strain, as evidenced by the emergence of a narrow band at the Fermi level. Temperature dependent ARPES measurements reveal that the metallic behaviour only develops below the commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) transition, where interlayer dimerization produces a band-insulator in unstrained samples. Abstract

High-power infrared laser systems with broadband tunability are of great importance due to their wide range of applications in spectroscopy and free-space communications. These systems require nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals for wavelength up/down conversion using sum/difference frequency generation, respectively. NLO crystals need to satisfy many competing criteria, including large nonlinear optical susceptibility, large laser induced damage threshold (LIDT), wide transparency range and phase-matchability. Here, we report bulk single crystals of SnP_2S_6 with a large non-resonant SHG coefficient of d33= 53 pm/V at 1550nm and a large LIDT of 350 GW/cm^2 for femtosecond laser pulses. It also exhibits a broad transparency range from 0.54 {\mu}m to 8.5{\mu}m (bandgap of ~2.3 eV) and can be both Type I and Type II phase-matched. The complete linear and SHG tensors are measured as well as predicted by first principles calculations, and they are in excellent agreement. A proximate double-resonance condition in the electronic band structure for both the fundamental and the SHG light is shown to enhance the non-resonant SHG response. Therefore, SnP2S6 is an outstanding candidate for infrared laser applications.

Abstract

The mobility of carriers, as limited by their scattering with phonons, can now routinely be obtained from first-principles electron-phonon coupling calculations. However, so far, most computations have relied on some form of simplification of the linearized Boltzmann transport equation based on either the self-energy, the momentum- or constant relaxation time approximations. Here, we develop a high-throughput infrastructure and an automatic workflow and we compute 69 phonon-limited mobilities in semiconductors. We compare the results resorting to the approximations with the exact iterative solution. We conclude that the approximate values may deviate significantly from the exact ones and are thus not reliable. Given the minimal computational overhead, our work encourages to rely on this exact iterative solution and warns on the possible inaccuracy of earlier results reported using relaxation time approximations., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Extracting pitch information from music recordings is a challenging but important problem in music signal processing. Frame-wise transcription or multi-pitch estimation aims for detecting the simultaneous activity of pitches in polyphonic music recordings and has recently seen major improvements thanks to deep-learning techniques, with a variety of proposed network architectures. In this paper, we realize different architectures based on CNNs, the U-net structure, and self-attention components. We propose several modifications to these architectures including self-attention modules for skip connections, recurrent layers to replace the self-attention, and a multi-task strategy with simultaneous prediction of the degree of polyphony. We compare variants of these architectures in different sizes for multi-pitch estimation, focusing on Western classical music beyond the piano-solo scenario using the MusicNet and Schubert Winterreise datasets. Our experiments indicate that most architectures yield competitive results and that larger model variants seem to be beneficial. However, we find that these results substantially depend on randomization effects and the particular choice of the training-test split, which questions the claim of superiority for particular architectures given only small improvements. We therefore investigate the influence of dataset splits in the presence of several movements of a work cycle (cross-version evaluation) and propose a best-practice splitting strategy for MusicNet, which weakens the influence of individual test tracks and suppresses overfitting to specific works and recording conditions. A final evaluation on a mixed dataset suggests that improvements on one specific dataset do not necessarily generalize to other scenarios, thus emphasizing the need for further high-quality multi-pitch datasets in order to reliably measure progress in music transcription tasks.

299. First principles study of the T-center in Silicon

Abstract

The T-center in silicon is a well-known carbon-based color center that has been recently considered for quantum technology applications. Using first principles computations, we show that the excited state is formed by a defect-bound exciton made of a localized defect state occupied by an electron to which a hole is bound. The localized state is of strong carbon \textit{p} character and reminiscent of the localization of the unpaired electron in the ethyl radical molecule. The radiative lifetime for the defect-bound exciton is calculated to be on the order of $\mu$s, much longer than other quantum defects such as the NV center in diamond and in agreement with experiments. The longer lifetime is associated with the small transition dipole moment as a result of the very different nature of the localized and delocalized states forming the defect-bound exciton. Finally, we use first principles calculations to assess the stability of the T-center. We find the T-center to be stable against decomposition into simpler defects when keeping the stoichiometry fixed. However, we identify that the T-center is easily prone to (de)hydrogenation and so requires very precise annealing conditions (temperature and atmosphere) to be efficiently formed.

Abstract

Electron-phonon coupling, i.e., the scattering of lattice vibrations by electrons and vice versa, is ubiquitous in solids and can lead to emergent ground states such as superconductivity and charge-density wave order. Strong coupling of phonons to electrons near the Fermi surface, which reduces the phonon lifetimes and broadens the phonon peaks in scattering experiments, is often associated with Fermi surface nesting. Here, we show that strong phonon broadening can occur in the absence of both Fermi surface nesting and lattice anharmonicity, if electron-phonon coupling is strongly enhanced for specific values of electron-momentum, k. We use inelastic neutron scattering, soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and ab-initio lattice dynamical and electronic band structure calculations to demonstrate this scenario in the highly anisotropic tetragonal electron-phonon superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C. This new scenario likely applies to a wide range of compounds.
