Abstract The purpose of our study was to develop a predictive model to rule out pheochromocytoma among adrenal tumours, based on unenhanced computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features. We performed a retrospective multicentre study of 1131 patients presenting with adrenal lesions including 163 subjects with histological confirmation of pheochromocytoma (PHEO), and 968 patients showing no clinical suspicion of pheochromocytoma in whom plasma and/or urinary metanephrines and/or catecholamines were within reference ranges (non-PHEO). Abstract We report a medium‐throughput drug‐screening platform (METPlatform) based on organotypic cultures that allows to evaluate inhibitors against metastases growing in situ. By applying this approach to the unmet clinical need of brain metastasis, we identified several vulnerabilities. Among them, a blood–brain barrier permeable HSP90 inhibitor showed high potency against mouse and human brain metastases at clinically relevant stages of the disease, including a novel model of local relapse after neurosurgery. Furthermore, in situ proteomic analysis applied to metastases treated with the chaperone inhibitor uncovered a novel molecular program in brain metastasis, which includes biomarkers of poor prognosis and actionable mechanisms of resistance. Our work validates METPlatform as a potent resource for metastasis research integrating drug‐screening and unbiased omic approaches that is compatible with human samples. Thus, this clinically relevant strategy is aimed to personalize the management of metastatic disease in the brain and elsewhere.

Introducción: a escala mundial se ha observado la aparición de cepas de Pseudomonas aeruginosa multirresistentes durante las últimas décadas. Este patógeno oportunista, relacionado ampliamente con infecciones asociadas a la asistencia sanitaria, produce mecanismos de resistencia a diversos antibióticos. Objetivo: enumerar factores de riesgo conocidos de los pacientes y describir el patrón de resistencia de Pseudomonas aeruginosa frente a los antimicrobianos. Métodos: estudio descriptivo, transversal realizado en el Servicio de Angiología del Hospital “Camilo Cienfuegos” de Sancti Spíritus entre el primero de julio y el 31 de diciembre de 2017 de aislamientos de Pseudomonas aeruginosa en muestras purulentas de pacientes con infecciones asociadas a la asistencia sanitaria. La población fue de 47 muestras. Se utilizó el sistema automatizado Vitek® 2 Compact para confirmar el diagnóstico y determinar la susceptibilidad antimicrobiana ante 13 antibióticos probados. Resultados: los principales factores de riesgo conocidos encontrados en los pacientes fueron la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y la insuficiencia arterial crónica. La resistencia se mantuvo a antibióticos B-lactámicos, incluidos los carbapenémicos en más de un 50%; sin embargo, se mantuvieron niveles bajos de resistencia a aminoglucósidos, fluoroquinolonas, tigeciclina y colistina. Conclusiones: la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 fue el principal factor de riesgo en pacientes ingresados en la Sala de Angiología para contraer una infección asociada a la asistencia sanitaria por Pseudomonas aeruginosa, los B-lactámicos presentaron una alta resistencia y la colistina puede ser una posible opción de tratamiento.

Abstract Background The microvessels area (MVA), derived from microvascular proliferation, is a biomarker useful for high-grade glioma classification. Nevertheless, its measurement is costly, labor-intense, and invasive. Finding radiologic correlations with MVA could provide a complementary non-invasive approach without an extra cost and labor intensity and from the first stage. This study aims to correlate imaging markers, such as relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV), and local MVA in IDH-wildtype glioblastoma, and to propose this imaging marker as useful for astrocytoma grade 4 classification. Methods Data from 73 tissue blocks belonging to 17 IDH-wildtype glioblastomas and 7 blocks from 2 IDH-mutant astrocytomas were compiled from the Ivy GAP database. MRI processing and rCBV quantification were carried out using ONCOhabitats methodology. Histologic and MRI co-registration was done manually with experts’ supervision, achieving an accuracy of 88.8% of overlay. Spearman’s correlation was used to analyze the association between rCBV and microvessel area. Mann-Whitney test was used to study differences of rCBV between blocks with presence or absence of microvessels in IDH-wildtype glioblastoma, as well as to find differences with IDH-mutant astrocytoma samples. Varios autores han asociado las relaciones entre protozoos ciliados y crustáceos con eventos de depredación en larvas. El presente estudio reporta eventos depredadores de larvas de Cardisoma guanhumi por Tetrahymena hegewishi, considerando la salinidad como factor de influencia. Se recolectaron zoeas en el primer estadio larvario de C. guanhumi y se colocaron en recipientes de 100 ml. Los recipientes fueron dispuestos para formar un diseño de bloques completamente al azar con diez repeticiones, constituyendo dos tratamientos regidos por su salinidad: un tratamiento de agua dulce (0.2 ppt) y un tratamiento de control basado en la salinidad del estanque de recolección de larvas (3.4 ppt). Después de 36 horas de ver el primer grupo de trofontes de T. hegewishi, todas las zoeas estaban muertas. Posteriormente, fueron llevadas al microscopio para contar los trofontes de T. hegewishi en un rango de 1 mm alrededor de estas. Para determinar el efecto de la salinidad en las densidades de población de T. hegewishi se utilizó una prueba T. Los resultados de la prueba T muestran diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos, mostrando a la población de T. hegewishi una disminución considerable cuando aumenta la salinidad. Debido al efecto negativo de la salinidad sobre la población de T. hegewishi, se infiere que este factor puede ser una alternativa para eliminar T. hegewishi de los cultivos de cangrejos, interfiriendo en la proliferación de los ciliados.

La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo problematizar desde la filosofía el concepto del perdón y la reconciliación en el marco de la justicia transicional en Colombia, producto del Acuerdo Final de Paz suscrito entre el Estado colombiano y las antiguas FARC-EP. Para lograr dicho análisis se implementó un enfoque metodológico cualitativo, basado en fuentes teóricas filosóficas y jurisprudenciales que pretenden dar cuenta de los mecanismos de la justicia restaurativa en Colombia, concretamente, la relación práctica que tienen la memoria y verdad para una ontología del perdón. Se obtuvo como resultado del proceso la problematización filosófica y jurídica del concepto de perdón como aquel dispositivo que se encuentra en constante disputa en el marco del postconflicto entre la soberanía del Estado como un sujeto imperium y la soberanía popular como aquel derecho de perdonar que únicamente puede emanar desde la sociedad civil en general desde la verdad a las víctimas.

In this article we evaluate the possibility of using glass coated magnetic microwires as an alternative to optical fiber devices in structural health monitoring in the railway industry. The effect of applied stress on hysteresis loops of Fe71.80B13.27Si11.02Nb2.99Ni0.92 and Co65.34Si12.00B10.20Cr8.48Fe3.90Mo0.08 microwires has been studied and analyzed. An interpolation function has been obtained relating the coercitivity Hc with the applied stress.

The Anthropocene era is characterized by a biodiversity crisis, where many species are pushing to extinction, causing alteration of the stability in the ecosystems and loss of their services. In this context, the translocation of endangered species is a powerful resource in conservation as long as its goals and appropriateness are clearly stated and it matches unambiguous criteria. Patella ferruginea is one of the most endangered marine species in the Mediterranean, and several translocations have been made with limited results in terms of survival. A methodology that mimics the natural topography of the substrate in the donor population based on Artificial Inert Mobile Substrates (AIMS, 40x20x10 cm) is proposed for restocking purposes. Three different treatments were tested: on substrate, slope, and cantilever depending on the position in which the AIMS were deployed. A total of 660 AIMS were installed within the donor area. The installation of such AIMS did not negatively affect either donor or receiving populations. A total of 188 specimens were translocated in three different attempts in 2018, 2019, and 2020, and no mortality was observed during the translocation process that lasted 24 h. Survival through the medium and long-term for the translocated specimens ranged from 80.6 to 91.5% after one month, 55.5 to 80.9% after eight months, and 48.4 to 76.6% after one year, with survival in the control population being 91.6% after four months and 87.5% after one year. Overall, recruits showed higher survival values than adults, whereas substrate treatment hosted more specimens (both recruits and adults) than slope and cantilever ones, while recruits were more abundant on cantilever treatment. The methodology has been proven to be useful for restocking and reintroduction purposes between donor and receiving areas.

Background: Many Mexican Ternstroemia species mainly inhabit the tropical montane cloud forest. These species have been misidentified in herbaria due to their morphological resemblance. Question: Are there foliar anatomical and micromorphological characters with diagnostic value that allow discriminating between the Mexican species of Ternstroemia? Study species: Ternstroemia sylvatica Schltdl. & Cham., and T. lineata DC. subsp. lineata (Pentaphylacaceae Engl.), 2018-2019. Study site and date: Tropical montane cloud forests at the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and Sierra Madre Oriental. Methods: Botanical specimens were collected and removed from herbarium sheets. The leaves were prepared through cleared, dehydration and paraffin inclusion techniques to observe and describe them. Results: The Ternstroemia species showed specific features of plants in humid environments, such as thin cuticle, mesophyll with scarce parenchyma palisade, and abundant intercellular spaces in the spongy parenchyma, and specific pigments that help to capture light and serve as protection. The species share a festooned broquidodromous venation pattern, anomocytic stomata, and closed collateral vascular bundle surrounded by perivascular fibers. Both species are differentiated by leaf shape, abundance of collenchyma layers, lenght of palisade parenchyma, and number of stomata per square millimeter on the abaxial surface. Conclusions: We support and validate some features recorded for Ternstroemia species and reject some previous generalizations made worldwide to the genus. This research is the first attempt to study anatomy, architecture, and foliar micromorphology of Mexican Pentaphylacaceae.

La ausencia de maestros en la etapa de Educación Infantil sigue siendo una realidad en la mayoría de los colegios. Y es que la consabida feminización de la profesión docente es persistente y no se ve amenazada por medidas institucionales, ni propuestas académicas que promuevan la incorporación de hombres al magisterio. En este artículo se presentan datos cualitativos obtenidos a partir de entrevistas estructuradas a trece maestros. Se les preguntó por su decisión de cursar el Grado en Educación Infantil y por sus primeras vivencias en la universidad (todos ellos estudiantes de la Universidad de Sevilla, España). El análisis de contenido realizado muestra una elección decidida, con referencias frecuentes a su afinidad con la infancia y sus deseos de mejorar la educación. Se sintieron arropados por sus familiares y, en ocasiones, cuestionados por sus amistades. La incorporación a la universidad fue gratificante, en pocos días superaron la incomodidad de ser prácticamente los únicos chicos del grupo clase. De todas formas, ni la toma de decisiones ni los inicios estuvieron exentos de prejuicios e incertidumbres. Este trabajo propone pautas de actuación para la formación inicial con la pretensión de identificar y abordar las necesidades de este colectivo de estudiantes. Se subraya la urgencia de avanzar en esta línea de investigación a fin de conocer con más amplitud y profundidad esta situación y avanzar en las pertinentes actuaciones.

Objective: Although clinical decision support systems (CDSS) have many benefits for clinical practice, they also have several barriers to their acceptance by professionals. Our objective in this study was to design and validate The Aleph palliative care (PC) CDSS through a user-centred method, considering the predictions of the artificial intelligence (AI) core, usability and user experience (UX). Methods: We performed two rounds of individual evaluation sessions with potential users. Each session included a model evaluation, a task test and a usability and UX assessment. Results: The machine learning (ML) predictive models outperformed the participants in the three predictive tasks. System Usability Scale (SUS) reported 62.7 ± 14.1 and 65 ± 26.2 on a 100-point rating scale for both rounds, respectively, while User Experience Questionnaire – Short Version (UEQ-S) scores were 1.42 and 1.5 on the −3 to 3 scale. Conclusions: The think-aloud method and including the UX dimension helped us to identify most of the workflow implementation issues. The system has good UX hedonic qualities; participants were interested in the tool and responded positively to it. Performance regarding usability was modest but acceptable.

Introduction and objectives: Intrahepatic cholestasis is a frequent disease during pregnancy. It is unknown if liver function alterations produce specific placental lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate placental histopathological changes in patients with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), and to explore correlations between the placental histopathology and hepatic function alteration or patient comorbidities, and body mass index. Patients and methods: A retrospective cohort study included women with ICP, most of them showing comorbidities such as overweight/obesity, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. They were attended at the National Institute of Perinatology in Mexico City for three years. Placental histopathological alterations were evaluated according to the Amsterdam Placental Workshop Group Consensus Statement. Data was analyzed using Graph-Pad Prism 5. Results: The results indicated that the placenta of ICP patients showed many histopathological alterations; however, no correlations were observed between the increase in bile acids or liver functional parameters and specific placental lesions. The most frequent comorbidities found in ICP patients were obesity, overweight and preeclampsia. Surprisingly, high percentage of ICP patients did not respond to UDCA treatment independently of the BMI group to which they belonged. Conclusion: The data suggest that ICP contribute to placental lesions. In addition, in patients with normal weight, an increase of chorangiosis and a reduced accelerated villous maturation without syncytial knots were observed in comparison with overweight and obese patients. It is necessary to improve the medical strategies in the treatment and liver disfunction surveillance of ICP patients.
