253. Consistency of the current global ocean observing systems from an Argo perspective

Abstract

Variations in the world's ocean heat storage and its associated volume changes are a key factor to gauge global warming and to assess the Earth's energy budget. It is also directly link to sea level change, which has a direct impact on coastal populations. Understanding and monitoring heat and sea level change is therefore one of the major legacies of current global ocean observing systems. In this study, we present an inter-comparison of the three of these global ocean observing systems: the ocean temperature/salinity network Argo, the gravimeter GRACE and the satellite altimeters. Their consistency is investigated at global and regional scale during the period 2005–2010 of overlapping time window of re-qualified data. These three datasets allow closing the recent global ocean sea level budget within uncertainties. However, sampling inconsistencies need to be corrected for an accurate budget at global scale. The Argo network allows estimating global ocean heat content and global sea level and reveals a positive change of 0.5 ± 0.1W m−2 and 0.5 ± 0.1 mm yr−1 over the last 8 yr (2005–2012). Regional inter-comparison of the global observing systems highlights the importance of specific ocean basins for the global estimates. Specifically, the Indonesian Archipelago appears as a key region for the global ocean variability. Both the large regional variability and the uncertainties in the current observing systems, prevent us to shed light, from the global sea level perspective, on the climatically important deep ocean changes. This emphasises, once more, the importance of continuing sustained effort in measuring the deep ocean from ship platforms and by setting up a much needed automated deep-Argo network.

Abstract

Couble, Julien Gravejat, Paul Gaillard, Francois Bianchi, Daniel; IR spectroscopy in transmission and in diffuse reflectance modes is used to characterize the adsorbed CO species formed during the adsorption of CO on (a) a TiO2 solid and (b) a partially reduced CuO/Al2O3 solid. The experiments consist studying the evolution of the intensities of the characteristic IR bands with the adsorption temperature T-a at a constant adsorption pressure P-a. For the two IR analytical procedures, the spectra are used to measure the heats of adsorption of the adsorbed CO species on the two solids according to the AEIR procedure previously described using the IR transmission mode. This allows us to fix the experimental conditions allowing a quantitative analysis of the IR spectra recorded in diffuse reflectance. Mainly, it is shown that the relative reflectance at the position of the characteristic IR bands of the adsorbed CO species must be higher than a critical value during the measurements. According to the amount of adsorbed species, this can be achieved by the dilution of the catalyst with another material that does not contribute to the experimental data. In the present study, it is shown that TiO2 and CuO/Al2O3 can be used without and with dilution respectively. For the Cu/Al2O3 catalyst, the alumina support has been used for the dilution whereas KBr that exhibits acceptable optical properties leads to a significant modification of the heats of adsorption of the adsorbed CO species. This study suggests that heats of adsorption of adsorbed species formed on catalysts of low IR transmission can be determined by the AEIR method using the diffuse reflectance mode. This offers a way to extend the application of quantitative analysis of IR spectra of adsorbed species (i.e. AEIR method) to solid of low IR transmission in particular the industrial catalysts. Abstract

Dès qu'il désire réaliser des essais ou des tests d'épandage avec des fumiers et composts, un opérateur est confronté à la difficulté d'évaluer les caractéristiques physiques des produits. Il existe aujourd'hui des outils ou des méthodes, parfois normalisées, pour appréhender le taux de matière sèche, la densité, la résistance au cisaillement, la présence ou non de brins végétaux longs... Mais aucune de ces mesures individuelles ne permet de qualifier globalement le produit et leur mise en ½uvre est longue et compliquée. C'est l'association de plusieurs de ces données qui peut fournir une appréciation des propriétés physiques du produit utilisé. Un outil synthétique, qui fournirait lors de son emploi une information globale regroupant plusieurs des paramètres simples de caractérisation serait très utile. C'est ce que nous avons recherché dans cette étude, à partir de la mesure de l'effort nécessaire à l'arrachement du produit à épandre. / As soon as the operator wishes to realize attempts or tests of spreading with manures and composts, he is confronted with the difficulty in evaluating the physical characteristics of the products. Today there are tools or methods, sometimes standardized, to estimate the dry matter rate, the density, the shear strength, the presence or not of long vegetable bits... But none of these individual measurements makes it possible to qualify the product overall and their implementation is long and complicated. It is the association of several of these data which can provide an appreciation of the physical properties of the product used. A synthetic tool, which would provide an aggregate information, at the time of its employment, gathering several of the simple parameters of characterization would be very useful. It is what we sought in this study, using the measurement of the effort necessary to extract from the product to spread.

Abstract

A major issue of transplantation studies in the adult brain is to examine the capacity of CNS or PNS grafts to reduce lesion-induced deficits, thus to explore their potential use for the treatment of neurological disorders in humans. Accordingly, most experiments refer to Parkinson’s and Hutington’s diseases which are both more or less directly related to the degeneration of so-called ‘diffuse’ projection systems. When grafting concerns ‘point-to-point’ neural systems – the function of which derives essentially from the precise arrangement of multiple connections between accurate neuronal assemblies – a further topic is to determine the degree to which grafts are able to repair the original pattern of connectivity. In addition to routine anatomical and histochemical approaches, investigation of some well known key features of the system under study by electrophysiological methods may provide decisive arguments to estimate how normal are both the host-graft pattern of connectivity and the functional properties of the graft neurons. Compared to other ‘point-to-point’ network models, the visual system offers this possibility. Present paper reviews anatomical and functional aspects of embryonic cortical tissue grafts aimed at replacing damaged cortical visual areas in adult rodents.

286. The Neuropsychiatry of Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders: Insights from Neuroimaging into the Neural Circuit Bases of Dysfunction

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Movement disorders, particularly those associated with basal ganglia disease, have a high rate of comorbid neuropsychiatric illness. METHODS: We consider the pathophysiological basis of the comorbidity between movement disorders and neuropsychiatric illness by 1) reviewing the epidemiology of neuropsychiatric illness in a range of hyperkinetic movement disorders, and 2) correlating findings to evidence from studies that have utilized modern neuroimaging techniques to investigate these disorders. In addition to diseases classically associated with basal ganglia pathology, such as Huntington disease, Wilson disease, the neuroacanthocytoses, and diseases of brain iron accumulation, we include diseases associated with pathology of subcortical white matter tracts, brain stem nuclei, and the cerebellum, such as metachromatic leukodystrophy, dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy, and the spinocerebellar ataxias. CONCLUSIONS: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are integral to a thorough phenomenological account of hyperkinetic movement disorders. Drawing on modern theories of cortico-subcortical circuits, we argue that these disorders can be conceptualized as disorders of complex subcortical networks with distinct functional architectures. Damage to any component of these complex information-processing networks can have variable and often profound consequences for the function of more remote neural structures, creating a diverse but nonetheless rational pattern of clinical symptomatology.

Abstract

In April–November 2009, surface salinity data provide a good coverage of most of the south-east Bay of Biscay and nearby Aquitaine/Armorican shelves. By late April most of the shelf, in particular south of 46°N, is covered by a fresh surface layer amounting to a fresh water volume of 49 · 109 m3. At that time, a moderate amount of fresh water has spread over the Landes Plateau. By mid-June, this shelf water penetrates over the Cape Ferret Canyon north of the Landes Plateau. By mid-July, it is found west of the Landes Plateau to at least 4°W, with an estimated fresh-water content of 11–14 · 109 m3. Drifters deployed on June 17 in the Cape Ferret Canyon, or later on the shelves, confirm the spreading of shelf fresh-water over the deep ocean. Lagrangian tracking using altimetric products, also confirms the transport by a quasi-stationary circulation. Operational numerical simulations (PREVIMER, IBI, HYCOM) display this spread of the freshwater, but in different areas. In particular, all have some fresh water escaping westward near the coast in the Basque region, which is not observed. Later in the summer season, the fresh water spreads westward to south-westward and along the shelf break to at least 5.5°W in late September.

Abstract

Stretch film, used for wrapping bales for silage, reacts very differently in the tropical Réunion Island compared to use in a temperate climate. Tropical climatic conditions have an adverse effect on the physical properties of the polythene film, in particular air-tightness, resistance to radiation and resistance to high temperatures. Modelling air-tightness tests has contributed to a better understanding of the effects of atmospheric conditions on measurements of pressure differences: temperature and air humidity have relatively little effect, while altitude has a major effect. If the measurements are made with a time lapse between wrapping and testing, tests can be used to compare the air-tightness of the bale wrapped with different films. The service life of film exposed on frames and wrapped roll bales provides the information needed to select film that can be stretched and can provide lasting air-tightness. The results contribute to the knowledge base on film that can be stretched under difficult conditions and on a certification methodology.

Abstract

The ICES Report on Ocean Climate presents the latest information on the status and trends of sea temperature and salinity in the North Atlantic and Nordic Seas. It is the main product of the ICES Working Group on Oceanic Hydrography, published annually. Bringing together multiple time-series from across the ICES and NAFO regions offers insight into the concurrent spatial and temporal trends in ocean temperature and salinity. This paper presents an overview of the physical variability in the North Atlantic Ocean at decadal and longer time-scales and reviews the current state of understanding of the causes and mechanisms of this variability. Between the 1960s and the 1990s, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index increased from a persistent negative phase in the 1960s to a strong positive phase during the 1980s and early 1990s. However, during the decade 2000–2009, because of shifts in atmospheric pressure patterns, the NAO was weak and the NAO index was not a good indicator of atmospheric forcing. Marked changes were also observed in oceanographic indices such as the Subpolar Gyre index during the mid-1990s and, as a consequence, conditions in the decade 2000–2009 have been very different from those of the previous four decades.

Abstract

The ESA/SMOS (European Space Agency/Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) satellite mission provides new measurements of Sea Surface Salin-ity (SSS) using L-band radiometry. After correcting SMOS brightness temperatures from systematic biases, SMOS sea surface salinity (SSS) reproduces quite well large scale expected SSS variations *Font et al., 2012+. At L-band frequency, the skin depth is 1 centimetre while most in situ SSS measurements are taken at a few meters depth. A preliminary study based on ARGO vertical profiles *Henocq et al., 2010+ indicated that vertical salinity differences between 1m and 10m depth higher than 0.1 psu are observed in the 3 oceans, mainly between 0° and 15°N, coinciding with the average position of the Inter Tropical Conver-gence Zones characterized by high precipitation rates. In order to better document the variability of salinity near the sea surface, which is currently not often measured by other in situ observa-tions (current Argo uppermost data is between 5 and 10m depth, whereas TAO-type measurements are near 1 or 2m depth), surface drifters have been equipped with Conductivity-Temperature (C-T) cells near a depth of 50 cm, which proved reliable for mid-latitude deployments *Reverdin et al., 2007+. Since then, two manufacturers of SVP (Surface Velocity Program) drifters, Metocean and the Pacific Gyre have instru-mented SVP drifters with sensors measuring conductivity at 30-50cm depth. In addition, new light floats named SURPLAS have been built at LOCEAN laboratory to measure conductivity at 15cm depth for a duration of a few weeks to a few months. SURPLAS floats have been tied to SVP drifters allowing the study of the SSS and SST (Sea Surface Temperature) stratification between 15cm and 50cm depth. In addition, ICM/CSIC has buit slightly larger drifters with C-T cells also near 50 cm depth, but without an anti-fouling protection of the cell.
