The tropical zonal-mean precipitation distribution varies between having single or double peaks, which are associated with intertropical convergence zones (ITCZs). Here, the effect of this meridional modality on the sensitivity of the ITCZ to hemispherically asymmetric heating is studied using an idealized GCM with parameterized Ekman ocean energy transport (OET). In the idealized GCM, transitions from unimodal to bimodal distributions are driven by equatorial ocean upwelling and cooling, which inhibits equatorial precipitation. For sufficiently strong equatorial cooling, the tropical circulation bifurcates to anti-Hadley circulation in the deep tropics, with a descending branch near the equator and off-equatorial double ITCZs. The intensity and extent of the anti-Hadley circulation is limited by a negative feedback:westerly geostrophic surface wind tendency in its poleward-flowing lower branches balances the easterly stress (and hence equatorial upwelling) required for its maintenance. For weak ocean stratification, which goes along with unimodal or weak bimodal tropical precipitation distribution, OET damps shifts of the tropical precipitation centroid but amplifies shifts of precipitation peaks. For strong ocean stratification, which goes along with pronounced double ITCZs, asymmetric heating leads to relative intensification of the precipitation peak in the warming hemisphere, but negligible meridional shifts. The dynamic feedbacks of the coupled system weaken the gradient of the atmospheric energy transport (AET) near the equator. This suggests that over a wide range of climates, the ITCZ position is proportional to the cubic root of the cross-equatorial AET, as opposed to the commonly used linear relation. Satellite altimeters provide global observations of sea surface height (SSH) and present a unique data set for advancing our theoretical understanding of upper‐ocean dynamics and monitoring its variability. Considering that mesoscale SSH patterns can evolve on timescales comparable to or shorter than satellite return periods, it is challenging to accurately reconstruct the continuous SSH evolution as currently available altimetry observations are still spatially and temporally sparse. Here we explore the possibility of SSH interpolation via Deep Learning by using synthetic observations from an idealized quasigeostrophic model of baroclinic ocean turbulence. We demonstrate that Convolutional Neural Networks with Residual Learning are superior in SSH reconstruction to linear and recently developed dynamical interpolation techniques. Also, the deep neural networks can provide a skillful state estimate of unobserved deep ocean currents at mesoscales. These conspicuous results suggest that SSH patterns of eddies might contain substantial information about the underlying deep ocean currents that are necessary for SSH prediction. Our training data are focused on highly idealized physics and diversification of processes needs to be considered to more accurately represent the real ocean. In addition, methodological improvements such as transfer learning and implementation of dynamically aware loss functions might be necessary to consider before its ultimate use with real satellite observations. Nonetheless, by providing a proof of concept based on synthetic data, our results point to deep learning as a viable alternative to existing interpolation and, more generally, state estimation methods for satellite observations of eddying currents. AVISO satellite data on the speeds of geostrophic currents from 2004 to 2018 are used to associate a substantial reduction in the saury catch in recent years with a change in the oceanographic situation in the Russian fishing grounds off the coast of the southern and middle Kuril Islands and Hokkaido Island. Lagrangian maps of the origin of water masses, calculated for this period of time on the basis of the AVISO field, and with overlaid positions of fishing vessels of Russia, Japan and Korea, show that this catastrophic reduction is due to a change in the pathways of the nutrient-rich subarctic waters of the Oyashio current in recent years. The greatest changes in the hydrological regime since 2015 were caused by intensification of the third branch of the Oyashio, which transports the waters of this current to the open ocean. At the same time, traditional fishing grounds off the eastern coasts of Hokkaido and southern Kurils have been reduced, while good fishing grounds have appeared in the open ocean. A study of water circulation in the northwestern part of the Bering Sea using AVISO satellite data on velocities of geostrophic currents from 2002 to 2017 showed a significantly variable dynamics of the surface waters. In January, the main current of the surface waters is directed toward the southwest along the continental slope in contrast to anticyclone water circulation in shelf. In July, the surface water current is oriented to the northeast along the continental slope, whereas cyclonic water circulation is dominant at shelf. The formation of winter mesoscale anticyclones is caused by a gain of low-temperature and low-saline shelf waters. The temporal variability of direction and velocity of summer currents is related to coastal upwelling, which is caused by the southern winds over the western part of the Bering Sea. The presence of upwelling and eddies should be considered one of the factors leading to the formation of an area with high chlorophyll concentration close to the coast during summer. The sea level over the tropical Pacific is a key indicator reflecting vertically integrated heat distribution over the ocean. Here we use the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory OM4 (GFDL-OM4) global ocean-sea ice model forced by both the CORE and JRA55-do atmospheric states (OMIP-I and OMIP-II) to evaluate the model performance and biases compared against available observations. We find persisting mean state dynamic sea level (DSL) bias along 9° N even with updated wind forcing in JRA55-do relative to CORE. The mean state bias is related to biases in wind stress forcing and geostrophic currents in the 4° N to 9° N latitudinal band. The simulation forced by JRA55-do significantly reduces the bias in DSL trend over the northern tropical Pacific relative to CORE. In the CORE forcing, the anomalous westerly wind trend in the eastern tropical Pacific causes an underestimated DSL trend across the entire Pacific basin along 10° N. The simulation forced by JRA55-do significantly reduces the bias in DSL trend over the northern tropical Pacific relative to CORE. We also identify a bias in the easterly wind trend along 20° N in both JRA55-do and CORE, thus motivating future improvement. In JRA55-do, an accurate Rossby wave initiated in the eastern tropical Pacific at seasonal time scale corrects a biased seasonal variability of the northern equatorial counter-current in the CORE simulation. Both CORE and JRA55-do generate realistic DSL variation during El Nino. A spectral problem of the Orr–Sommerfeld type is considered to describe unstable disturbances of oceanic geostrophic currents with a linear vertical velocity profile by taking into account the vertical diffusion of buoyancy and friction. Numerical solutions are obtained for different values of the dimensionless parameters of the problem. Calculations of the spectra of eigenvalues and growth rates are compared with those of a similar problem for an ideal fluid. It is shown that (a) dissipation expands the range of wave numbers of unstable disturbances, (b) dissipation can increase the growth rates of baroclinic disturbances, (c) disturbances driven by the instability of the critical layer can grow faster than baroclinic disturbances, and (d) currents with a width equal to or less than the Rossby radius can be unstable; nearly circular (axisymmetric) unstable disturbances (submesoscale eddies) can develop in narrow currents or frontal zones. Coupling between the surface and near‐bottom currents in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) has been reported in many case studies. However, geographical variations of this coupling need more examination. In this study, surface geostrophic currents derived from satellite‐observed sea surface height and subsurface currents from a collection of deep ocean moorings are used to examine the surface and bottom coupling in different parts of the GoM. The short‐period (30–90 days) fluctuations generated by the Loop Current (LC) and the LC eddies (LCEs) have a more vertically coherent structure and stronger deep ocean expressions than the long‐period fluctuations (>90 days). In addition, the strength of the coupling is modulated by the long‐period variations of the LC and LCE sheddings. Moreover, the surface and bottom coupling varies geographically. In the LC region, the surface fluctuations along the eastern side of the LC are important in causing the bottom current fluctuations through baroclinic instability under the LC and through traveling topographic Rossby waves (TRWs) north of the LC. In the central deep GoM, the bottom currents are affected by the upper fluctuations of the northern LC through both local baroclinic instability and remote TRW propagation. In the northwestern GoM, the bottom current fluctuations are largely related to the remote surface variability from the west side of the LC by TRWs propagating northwestward. This study will help us better understand mechanisms of the bottom current fluctuations that are important for the dispersal of deep ocean materials and properties. However, in contrast to surface currents that are easily derived from the abundant satellite observations, our understanding of the bottom currents is very limited. In this study, the relationships between surface and near‐bottom current fluctuations in different parts of the GoM are investigated by combining a collection of historical near‐bottom current measurements and satellite data. The results show that the bottom current variability is linked to local processes such as current instability or remote processes through planetary wave propagation. The surface and bottom coupling is mainly related to the short‐period variability generated along the Loop Current and the Loop Current eddies and has a significant influence on the bottom currents. Although the long‐period fluctuations have weak bottom expressions, they can modulate the strength of the short‐period coupling. The effects of temporal changes in the marine geoid on estimates of the ocean dynamic topography are being investigated. Influences from mass redistribution due to changes of land hydrology, ice sheets, glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), and ocean and atmospheric dynamics are considered, and the associated crustal deformation is included. The strongest signals are associated with the seasonal cycle caused by changes in terrestrial water storage and ice sheets as well as the redistribution of atmospheric mass. Second to this is the importance of an overall trend caused by GIA and decreasing ice sheets over Greenland and Antarctica. On long spatial scales, the amplitude of regional trends estimated for the geoid height has a sizable fraction of those from sea level anomaly (SLA) for the period 1993–2016, also after subtraction of steric height of the upper 1,000 m to analyze trends in deep ocean geostrophic currents. The estimated strong negative geoid height trend south of Greenland for the period 1993–2016 opposes changes in dynamic sea level for the same period thereby affecting past studies on changes of both the strength of the subpolar gyre based on SLA and the meridional overturning circulation on a section between Cape Farewell and Portugal applying ocean dynamic topography and hydrography. We conclude that temporal geoid height trends should be considered in studies of (multi)decadal trends in sea level and circulation on large spatial scales based on altimetry data referenced to a geoid field. Observations of changes in terrestrial water storage obtained from the satellite mission GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) have frequently been used for water cycle studies and for the improvement of hydrological models by means of calibration and data assimilation. However, due to a low spatial resolution of the gravity field models spatially localized water storage changes, such as those occurring in lakes and reservoirs, cannot properly be represented in the GRACE estimates. As surface storage changes can represent a large part of total water storage, this leads to leakage effects and results in surface water signals becoming erroneously assimilated into other water storage compartments of neighboring model grid cells. As a consequence, a simple mass balance at grid/regional scale is not sufficient to deconvolve the impact of surface water on TWS. Furthermore, non-hydrology related phenomena contained in the GRACE time series, such as the mass redistribution caused by major earthquakes, hamper the use of GRACE for hydrological studies in affected regions. In this paper, we present the first release (RL01) of the global correction product RECOG (REgional COrrections for GRACE), which accounts for both the surface water (lakes & reservoirs, RECOG-LR) and earthquake effects (RECOG-EQ). RECOG-LR is computed from forward-modelling surface water volume estimates derived from satellite altimetry and (optical) remote sensing and allows both a removal of these signals from GRACE and a re-location of the mass change to its origin within the outline of the lakes/reservoirs. The earthquake correction RECOG-EQ includes both the co-seismic and post-seismic signals of two major earthquakes with magnitudes above 9 Mw. We can show that applying the correction dataset (1) reduces the GRACE signal variability by up to 75 % around major lakes and explains a large part of GRACE seasonal variations and trends, (2) avoids the introduction of spurious trends caused by leakage signals of nearby lakes when calibrating/assimilating hydrological models with GRACE, even in neighboring river basins, and (3) enables a clearer detection of hydrological droughts in areas affected by earthquakes. A first validation of the corrected GRACE time series using GPS-derived vertical station displacements shows a consistent improvement of the fit between GRACE and GNSS after applying the correction. In the California Current System (CCS), the nearshore environment experiences natural exposure to low pH and reduced oxygen in response to coastal upwelling. Anthropogenic impacts further decrease pH and oxygen below biological thresholds, making the CCS particularly vulnerable to ocean acidification and hypoxia. Results from a coupled physical‐biogeochemical model reveal a strongly heterogeneous alongshore pattern of nearshore pH and oxygen in the central CCS, both in their long‐term means and trends. This spatial structuring is explained by an interplay between alongshore variability in local upwelling intensity and subsequent primary production, modulated by nearshore advection and regional geostrophic currents. The model solution suggests that the progression of ocean acidification and hypoxia will not be spatially homogeneous, thereby highlighting the need to consider subregional processes when assessing natural and anthropogenic impacts on coastal ecosystems in eastern boundary current upwelling regions. The deformation radius is widely used as an indication of the eddy length scale at different latitudes. The radius is usually calculated assuming a flat ocean bottom. However, bathymetry alters the baroclinic modes and hence their deformation radii. In a linear quasigeostrophic two-layer model with realistic parameters, the deep flow for a 100-km wave approaches zero with a bottom ridge roughly 10m high, leaving a baroclinic mode that is mostly surface trapped. This is in line with published current meter studies showing a primary EOF that is surface intensified and has nearly zero flow at the bottom. The deformation radius associated with this ''surface mode'' is significantly larger than that of the flat bottom baroclinic mode. Using World Ocean Atlas data, the surface radius is found to be 20%-50% larger over much of the globe, and 100% larger in some regions. This in turn alters the long Rossby wave speed, which is shown to be 1.5-2 times faster than over a flat bottom. In addition, the larger deformation radius is easier to resolve in ocean models. The spatial scale of submesoscales is an important parameter for studies of submesoscale dynamics and multiscale interactions. The horizontal spatial scales of baroclinic, geostrophic-branch mixed layer instabilities (MLI) are investigated globally (without the equatorial or Arctic oceans) based on observations and simulations in the surface and bottom mixed layers away from significant topography. Three high-verticalresolution boundary layer schemes driven with profiles from a MITgcm global submesoscale-permitting model improve robustness. The fastest-growing MLI wavelength decreases toward the poles. The zonal median surface MLI wavelength is 51-2.9 km when estimated from the observations and from 32, 25, and 27 km to 2.5, 1.2, and 1.1 km under the K-profile parameterization (KPP), Mellor-Yamada (MY), and κ-ε schemes, respectively. The surface MLI wavelength has a strong seasonality with a median value 1.6 times smaller in summer (10 km) than winter (16 km) globally from the observations. The median bottom MLI wavelengths estimated from simulations are 2.1, 1.4, and 0.41 km globally under the KPP, MY, and κ-ε schemes, respectively, with little seasonality. The estimated required ocean model grid spacings to resolve wintertime surface mixed layer eddies are 1.9 km (50% of regions resolved) and 0.92 km (90%) globally. To resolve summertime eddies or MLI seasonality requires grids finer than 1.3 km (50%) and 0.55 km (90%). The North Equatorial Subsurface Current (NESC) is a subthermocline ocean current uncovered recently in the tropical Pacific Ocean, flowing westward below the North Equatorial Countercurrent. In this study, the dynamics of the seasonal cycle of this current are studied using historical shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements and Argo absolute geostrophic currents. Both data show a westward current at the depths of 200-1000m between 4° and 6°N, with a typical core speed of about 5 and 2 cms-1, respectively. The subsurface current originates in the eastern Pacific, with its core descending to deeper isopycnal surfaces and moving to the equator as it flows westward. The zonal velocity of the NESC shows pronounced seasonal variability, with the annual-cycle harmonics of vertical isothermal displacement and zonal velocity presenting characters of vertically propagating baroclinic Rossby waves. A simple analytical Rossby wave model is employed to simulate the propagation of the seasonal variations of the westward zonal currents successfully, which is the basis for exploring the wind forcing dynamics. The results suggest that the wind curl forcing in the central-eastern basin between 170° and 140°W associated with the meridional movement of the intertropical convergence zone dominates the NESC seasonal variability in the western Pacific, with the winds west of 170°W and east of 140°W playing a minor role in the forcing. Eleven climate system models that participate in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) were evaluated based on an assessment of their simulated meridional transports in comparison with the Sverdrup transports. The analyses show that the simulated North Pacific Ocean circulation is essentially in Sverdrup balance in most of the 11 models while the Argo geostrophic meridional transports indicate significant non-Sverdrup gyre circulation in the tropical North Pacific Ocean. The climate models overestimated the observed tropical and subtropical volume transports significantly. The non-Sverdrup gyre circulation leads to non-Sverdrup heat and salt transports, the absence of which in the CMIP5 simulations suggests deficiencies of the CMIP5 model dynamics in simulating the realistic meridional volume, heat, and salt transports of the ocean. Data from repeat hydrographic surveys over the 25‐year period 1993 to 2017, together with satellite altimetry data, are used to quantify the temporal and spatial variability of the North Icelandic Irminger Current (NIIC), East Icelandic Current (EIC), and the water masses they advect around northern Iceland. We focus on the warm, salty Atlantic Water (AW) flowing northward through Denmark Strait and the cooler, fresher, denser Atlantic‐origin Overflow Water (AtOW) which has circulated cyclonically around the rim of the Nordic Seas before being advected to the Iceland slope via the EIC. The absolute geostrophic velocities reveal that approximately half of the NIIC recirculates just north of Denmark Strait, while the remaining half merges with the EIC to form a single current that extends to the northeast of Iceland, with no further loss in transport of either component. The AW percentage decreases by 75% over this distance, while the AtOW percentage is higher than that of the AW in the merged current. The NIIC and merged NIIC‐EIC are found to be baroclinically unstable, which causes the flow to become increasingly barotropic as it progresses around Iceland. A seasonal accounting of the water masses within the currents indicates that only in springtime is the NIIC dominated by AW inflow north of Denmark Strait. Overall, there is considerably more seasonal and along‐stream variability in the properties of the flow prior to the merging of the NIIC and EIC. Over the 25‐year time period, the NIIC became warmer, saltier, and increased in volume transport. We demonstrate that part of the NIIC recirculates just north of the strait, and the remaining part is joined by another current stemming from the East Greenland slope, known as the East Icelandic Current (EIC). Originally the NIIC and EIC flow side by side but then merge into a single current that flows to the northeast part of Iceland. The water in the NIIC and merged flow becomes progressively colder and fresher, but there is no loss in transport. Over the 25‐year period the NIIC has become warmer and saltier, and its transport has increased. The response of near-Antarctic waters to freshening by increased glacial melt is investigated using a highresolution (0.18) global ocean–sea ice model with realistic Antarctic water-mass properties. Two meltwater perturbation experiments are conducted where the ocean model is forced with constant elevated glacial melt rates of 1.5 and 2.8 times the control rate. Within 10 years of the onset of enhanced meltwater forcing, the generation of Antarctic Bottom Water from Dense Shelf Water ceases, as shelf waters become increasingly buoyant. Increased ocean stratification triggers subsurface warming in Dense Shelf Water source regions, suggesting a localized positive feedback to melt. In a parallel response, meltwater forcing enhances the subsurface lateral density gradients of the Antarctic Slope Front that modulate the transport of warm Circumpolar Deep Water across the continental slope toward ice shelf grounding lines. Consequently, coastal freshening acts to isolate the Antarctic Ice Sheet from open ocean heat, suggesting a cooling response to melt that counteracts warming associated with stratification. Further, these strengthening density gradients accelerate westward geostrophic currents along the coast and shelf break, homogenizing shelf waters and amplifying remote feedbacks. The net effect on the continental shelf is transient warming, followed by cooling in both experiments; however, this signal is the aggregate of a complex pattern of regional warming and cooling responses. These results suggest coastal freshening by meltwater may alter the thermal forcing of the Antarctic ice sheet in ways that both accelerate and inhibit ice shelf melt at different locations along the Antarctic coastline. Air–sea interactions play a critical role in the climate system. This study investigates wind-induced changes in the ocean surface temperature and sea ice cover feeding back onto the atmospheric circulation. This interaction was modeled in the Nordic seas, using a partial coupling method to constrain the ocean with prescribed wind forcing in an otherwise fully coupled Earth system model. This enabled the evaluation of not only the direct oceanic, but also the indirect atmospheric response to idealized forcing scenarios of perturbed winds over the Nordic seas. The results show that an anticyclonic wind anomaly forcing leads to significant surface cooling in the Greenland Sea mostly due to anomalous drift of sea ice. During winter, the cooling reduces the net surface heat flux to the atmosphere and increases sea level pressure. The pressure gradients result in anomalous geostrophic southerly winds, which locally are comparable both in direction and in velocity to the prescribed forcing anomalies, suggesting a positive feedback. The emerging view of the abyssal circulation is that it is associated with bottom-enhanced mixing, which results in downwelling in the stratified ocean interior and upwelling in a bottom boundary layer along the insulating and sloping seafloor. In the limit of slowly varying vertical stratification and topography, however, boundary layer theory predicts that these upslope and downslope flows largely compensate, such that net water mass transformations along the slope are vanishingly small. Using a planetary geostrophic circulation model that resolves both the boundary layer dynamics and the large-scale overturning in an idealized basin with bottom-enhanced mixing along a midocean ridge, we show that vertical variations in stratification become sufficiently large at equilibrium to reduce the degree of compensation along the midocean ridge flanks. The resulting large net transformations are similar to estimates for the abyssal ocean and span the vertical extent of the ridge. These results suggest that boundary flows generated by mixing play a crucial role in setting the global ocean stratification and overturning circulation, requiring a revision of abyssal ocean theories. The North Equatorial Subsurface Current (NESC) has recently been found to flow westward below the North Equatorial Countercurrent in the subsurface layer across the Pacific Ocean. The structure, water mass properties, and the dynamics of the NESC are studied using Argo profiles and geostrophic currents, combined with moored current meter observations. The mean westward geostrophic currents of the NESC has been validated with moored current meter measurements at 4.7° N, 142° E in the far western tropical Pacific Ocean. Sizable seasonal-to-interannual variability of the NESC is indicated by the observations, with strong transports in boreal summer and during La Niña events, whereas weak transports in boreal winter and during El Niño events. The water masses of the NESC appear to be the mixture of the North and South Pacific intermediate waters, with the waters immediately below the thermocline closer to the North than to the South Pacific waters. A simulation using a linear continuously stratified model of ocean circulation suggests that the mean NESC is forced by wind curl through low baroclinic mode responses of the ocean. Unprecedented coastal upwelling off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula was reported during the summer of 2013. The upwelling continued for more than a month after a plunge in upwelling-favourable winds and had serious impacts on fisheries. This is a rare phenomenon, as most coastal upwelling events relax a few days after the wind weakens. In this study, observational data and numerical modelling results were analysed to investigate the cause of the upwelling and the reason behind it being sustained for such an extended period. Coastal upwelling was induced by an upwelling-favourable wind in July, resulting in the dynamic uplift of deep, cold water. The dynamic uplift decreased the steric sea level in the coastal region. The sea level difference between the coastal and offshore regions produced an intensified cross-shore pressure gradient that enhanced the surface geostrophic current along the coast. The strong surface current maintained the dynamic uplift due to geostrophic equilibrium. This positive feedback between the dynamic uplift and geostrophic adjustment sustained the coastal upwelling for a month following a plunge in the upwelling-favourable wind. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transport of shoreline-released tracer from the surfzone across the shelf can be affected by a variety of physical processes from wind-driven to submesoscale, with implications for shoreline contaminant dilution and larval dispersion. Here, a high-resolution wave-current coupled model that resolves the surfzone and receives realistic oceanic and atmospheric forcing is used to simulate dye representing shoreline-released untreated wastewater in the San Diego-Tijuana region. Surfzone and shelf alongshore dye transports are primarily driven by obliquely incident wave breaking and alongshore pressure gradients, respectively. At the midshelf to outer-shelf (MS-OS) boundary (25-m depth), defined as a mean streamline, along-boundary density gradients are persistent, dye is surface enhanced and time and alongshelf patchy. Using baroclinic and along-boundary perturbation dye transports, two cross-shore dye exchange velocities are estimated and related to physical processes. Barotropic and baroclinic tides cannot explain the modeled cross-shore transport. The baroclinic exchange velocity is consistent with the wind-driven Ekman transport. The perturbation exchange velocity is elevated for alongshore dye and cross-shore velocity length scales, 1 km (within the submesoscale) and stronger alongshore density gradient ...r/...y variability, indicating that alongfront geostrophic flows induce offshore transport. This elevated ...r/...y is linked to convergent northward surface along-shelf currents (likely due to regional bathymetry), suggesting deformation frontogenesis. Estimates of 3D ocean circulation are needed to improve our understanding of ocean dynamics and to assess their impact on marine ecosystems and Earth climate. Here we present the OMEGA3D product, an observation-based time series of (quasi-)global 3D ocean currents covering the 1993–2018 period, developed by the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche within the European Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS). This dataset was obtained by applying a diabatic quasi-geostrophic (QG) diagnostic model to the data-driven CMEMS-ARMOR3D weekly reconstruction of temperature and salinity as well as ERA Interim fluxes. Outside the equatorial band, vertical velocities were retrieved in the upper 1500 m at 1/4 ∘ nominal resolution and successively used to compute the horizontal ageostrophic components. Root mean square differences between OMEGA3D total horizontal velocities and totally independent drifter observations at two different depths (15 and 1000 m) decrease with respect to corresponding estimates obtained from zero-order geostrophic balance, meaning that estimated vertical velocities can also be deemed reliable. OMEGA3D horizontal velocities are also closer to drifter observations than velocities provided by a set of reanalyses spanning a comparable time period but based on data assimilation in ocean general circulation numerical models. In May 2012, we conducted a hydrographic survey over the Carlsberg Ridge in the northwest Indian Ocean. In this paper, we use these station data, in combination with some free-floating Argo profiles, to obtain the sectional temperature and salinity fields, and subsequently, the hydrographic characteristics are comprehensively analyzed. Through the basic T–S diagram, three salty water masses, Arabian Sea High-Salinity Water, Persian Gulf Water, and Red Sea Water, are identified. The sectional data show a clear ventilation structure associated with Arabian Sea High-Salinity Water. The 35.8 psu salty water sinks at 6.9 ∘ N and extends southward to 4.4 ∘ N at depths around the thermocline, where the thermocline depth is in the range of 100 to 150 m. This salty thermocline extends much further south than climatology indicates. Furthermore, the temperature and salinity data are used to compute the absolute geostrophic current over the specific section, and the results show mesoscale eddy vertical structure different from some widely used oceanic reanalysis data. Evidences of sedimentation affected by oceanic circulation, such as nepheloid layers and contourites are often observed along continental slopes. However, the oceanographic processes controlling sedimentation along continental margins remain poorly understood. Multibeam bathymetry and high‐resolution seismic reflection data revealed a contourite depositional system in the Mozambican upper continental slope composed of a contourite terrace (a surface with a gentle seaward slope dominated by erosion) and a plastered drift (a convex‐shape sedimentary deposit). A continuous alongslope channel and a field of sand dunes (mainly migrating upslope), formed during Holocene, were identified in the contourite terrace at the present seafloor. Seismic reflection data of the water column show internal waves and boluses propagating in the pycnocline near the upper slope. The channel and the dunes are probably the result of the interaction of the observed internal waves with the seafloor under two different conditions. The alongslope channel is located in a zone where intense barotropic tidal currents may arrest internal solitary waves, generating a hydraulic jump and focused erosion. However, upslope migrating dunes may be formed by bottom currents induced by internal solitary waves of elevation propagating landwards in the pycnocline. These small‐scale sedimentary features generated by internal waves are superimposed on large‐scale contouritic deposits, such as plastered drifts and contourite terraces, which are related to geostrophic currents. Multiple factors have been accused of triggering coastal hypoxia off the Changjiang Estuary, and their interactions lead to high yearly variation in hypoxia development time window and distribution extent. Two oceanographic cruises, conducted in July 2015 and August–September 2017, were complemented by river discharge, circulation simulation, remotely sensed wind, salinity and sea level anomaly data to study the dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion off the Changjiang Estuary from synoptic to interannual timescales. Intensification of the Chinese Coastal Current and Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) spreading to the south together with coastal downwelling caused by the northerly wind was observed in the summer of 2015. This physical forcing led to a well-ventilated area in the north and a hypoxic area of 1.3×104 km 2 in the south, while in 2017 the summer monsoon (southerly winds) induced offshore transport in the surface layer that caused a subsurface intrusion of Kuroshio-derived water to the shallower areas (<10 m depth) in the north and upwelling in the south. Wind-driven Ekman surface flow and reversal of the geostrophic current related to the upwelling compelled alteration of the Chinese Coastal Current. Consequently, intense hypoxia (DO down to 0.6 mg L -1) starting from 4 to 8 m depth connected to CDW and deep water intrusion in the north and coastal hypoxia linked to the upwelling in the south were observed in 2017. Distinct situations of stratification and DO distributions can be explained by wind forcing and concurrent features in surface and deep layer circulation, upwelling and downwelling events. Enhanced primary production in the upper layer of the CDW or the upwelled water determines the location and extent of DO depletion. Likewise, the pycnocline created by Kuroshio subsurface water intrusion is an essential precondition for hypoxia formation. Wind forcing largely controls the interannual change of hypoxic area location and extent. If the summer monsoon prevails, extensive hypoxia more likely occurs in the north. An understanding of the oceanic response to tropical cyclones is of importance for studies on climate change, ecological variability and environmental protection. Hurricane Irma (2017, Atlantic Ocean) broke many records, including the fact that it was the first category 5 hurricane making landfall in Cuba since 1924. In this study, we assess the oceanic response of the waters of the Cuban Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the eastern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) to the passage of this hurricane. Overall, Irma led to a weak sea surface cooling in the EEZ, which was associated with the thermal structure of its waters and the fact that it was affected by the left-side quadrants of this hurricane. This cooling was driven by mixing and upwelling processes. In contrast, the chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration increase was comparable with climatological records, suggesting that horizontal advection of coastal waters and entrainment of chl-a rich waters from remote regions of the GoM influenced the post-storm chl-a concentration. Moreover, Irma increased the chl-a concentration in the northeastern GoM and stimulated the offshore transport of these chl-a-rich waters to the interior GoM. A high chl-a plume (HCP) extended southward across the eastern GoM during the first post-storm week of Irma, and these waters reached the northwestern Cuban coast following the Loop Current. An intensification of the geostrophic currents of an anticyclonic eddy at the upper front of the Loop Current, the formation of an anticyclonic-cyclonic eddy pair in the northeastern GoM and wind-driven advection governed the extension of this HCP. To study the water dynamics in the western Bering Sea, the time series of geostrophic velocities derived from satellite altimetry, Global total current (Copernicus Globcurrent) velocities, Argo buoys, and ship, borne data are analyzed. We demonstrate that the surface currents in the study area are characterized by a significant seasonal and interannual variability. In January, the southwestern currents are prevailing in the western Bering Sea, the geostrophic currents are connected to the continental slope, and mesoscale anticyclonic movement of waters is observed on the shelf. In July, the surface flow is oriented to the northeast along the continental slope, and cyclonic water movement prevails on the shelf. The formation of mesoscale anticyclones in late winter – early spring – is related to the supply of low-temperature and low-salinity Bering Sea shelf water. The temporal variability of the direction and current velocity in the western part of the Bering Sea during the summer period is associated with the wind and coastal upwelling. The presence of coastal upwelling and eddies should be considered as one of the factors leading to the high concentration of chlorophyll a on a shelf and continental slope in the summer. Morphology of the Rio Grande Rise and the acoustic structure of different types of deposits in its uppermost sedimentary cover were discussed based on high-resolution seismoacoustic profiling of cruises #32 (2010) and #52 (2016) of R/V Akademik Ioffe. Slopes of the Rio Grande Rise are composed mainly of landslide deposits and gravitites, but contourite sedimentation is possible on its southern slope. Contourite sedimentary waves and, probably, small drifts are identified in the Cruzeiro do Sul Trough at the top of the Rio Grande Rise. Mixed gravitite–contourite sedimentary systems seem to be located at the foot of northern and southern slopes. Using the Gauss‐Markov decomposition method, this study investigates the mean structure and seasonal variation of the tropical gyre in the Indian Ocean based on the observations of surface drifters. In the climatological mean, the clockwise tropical gyre consists of the equatorial Wyrtki Jets (WJs), the South Equatorial Current (SEC), and the eastern and western boundary currents. This gyre system redistributes the water mass over the entire tropical Indian Ocean basin. Its variations are associated with the monsoon transitions, featuring a typical clockwise pattern in the boreal spring and fall seasons. The relative importance of the geostrophic and Ekman components of the surface currents as well as the role of eddy activity were further examined. It was found that the geostrophic component dominates the overall features of the tropical gyre, including the SEC meandering, the broad eastern boundary current, and the axes of the WJs in boreal spring and fall, whereas the Ekman component strengthens the intensity of the WJs and SEC. Eddies are active over the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean and transport a warm and fresh water mass westward, with direct impact on the southern branch of the tropical gyre. In particular, the trajectories of drifters reveal that during strong Indian Ocean Dipole or El Niño‐Southern Oscillation events, long‐lived eddies were able to reach the southwestern Indian Ocean with a moving speed close to that of the first baroclinic Rossby waves. In this paper, 24 years of daily sea surface height (SSH) fields constructed by merging the measurements from two/multiple simultaneously operating altimeters are analysed to investigate mesoscale eddies. Based on efficient parallel identification and optimized tracking algorithms, we present two global daily mesoscale ocean eddy datasets () containing over 688,000 eddy trajectories that persist for at least 4 weeks as identified in the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) Two-sat/All-sat datasets over the 1993–2016 period. These long-lived eddies have an average lifetime of 72 days and an average propagation speed of 5.1 k m d a y − 1 . The properties of the identified eddy contours include the amplitude, radius, area, geostrophic current speed, eddy kinetic energy (EKE), and relative vorticity, based on which a new optimized eddy tracking method is applied. The most stable properties of the eddies are included in a set of dimensionless similarity parameters. A comparison of the eddy track outputs from the 'Two-sat merged' and 'All-sat merged' data products using our algorithm (hereafter called I4Eddy) shows that the 'All-sat merged' data are more suitable for studying global eddy tracks. The eddy trajectory data are also compared with two other published global eddy trajectory products, and the results demonstrate the efficiency of our method. The accuracy of our method's eddy identification algorithm and its moderately conservative eddy tracking properties allow our algorithm to generate more continuous eddy tracks without large jumps. In southeastern Brazil, the Serra do Mar coastal mountain range blocks the sediment influx from arriving at a ca. 1,500 km long continental margin comprising Santos and Pelotas basins. Despite this deprivation, the margin accumulated a ca. 1 km thick sedimentary succession since the Mid‐Miocene. Examination of seismic reflection and oceanographic data indicates that shelf‐margin clinoform formation exhibits a regional variability, with major sigmoidal clinoforms developed in the transitional area between both basins. Laterally, poorly developed oblique clinoforms constitute isolated depocenters along the shelf margin. The continuous clinoform development in the transitional area is attributed to the major influence on sediment transport patterns of several ocean bottom currents flowing along the margin, such as the Brazil Coastal Current, the Brazil Current and the Intermediate Water Brazil Current. These currents erode, transport and distribute sediments across the shelf break and upper slope from distant sediment sources located either north or south of the study area. The progressive southward strengthening of the Brazil Current could be responsible for a major southward sediment redistribution from the northern Campos Basin, and/or for sediment entrainment from northward‐induced transport by the Brazil Coastal Current, originally derived from the De la Plata Estuary. In the transition between Santos and Pelotas basins, the Intermediate Water Brazil Current splits forming the Santos Bifurcation, allowing for a continuous depositional process and clinoform generation. We suggest that ocean bottom currents may shape other shelf‐edge 'contouritic clinoforms' in continental margins mainly constructed by along‐strike sediment transport largely driven by long‐term geostrophic currents. A prolonged high-salinity event in the northern Arabian Sea, to the east of the Gulf of Oman, during 2014–17 was identified based on Argo datasets. The prolonged event was manifested as enhanced spreading of the surface Arabian Sea high-salinity water and the intermediate Persian Gulf water. We used satellite altimetric data and geostrophic current data to understand the oceanic processes and the salt budget associated with the high-salinity event. The results indicated that the strengthened high-salinity advection from the Gulf of Oman was one of the main causes of the salinity increase in the northern Arabian Sea. The changes of the seasonally dependent eddies near the mouth of the Gulf of Oman dominated the strengthened high-salinity advection during the event as compared with the previous 4-yr period: the westward shifted cyclonic eddy during early winter stretched to the remote western Gulf of Oman, which carried the higher-salinity water to the northern Arabian Sea along the south coast of the Gulf. An anomalous eddy dipole during early summer intensified the eastward Ras Al Hadd Jet and its high-salinity advection into the northern Arabian Sea. In addition, the weakened low-salinity advection by coastal currents along the Omani coast caused by the weakened southwest monsoon contributed to the maintenance of the high-salinity event. High‐resolution ocean temperature, salinity, current, and turbulence data were collected at an Arctic thermohaline front in the Nansen Basin. The front was close to the sea ice edge and separated the cold and fresh surface melt water from the warm and saline mixed layer. Measurements were made on 18 September 2018, in the upper 100 m, from a research vessel and an autonomous underwater vehicle. Destabilizing surface buoyancy fluxes from a combination of heat loss to the atmosphere and cross‐front Ekman transport by down‐front winds reduced the potential vorticity in the upper ocean. Turbulence structure in the mixed layer was generally consistent with turbulence production through convection by heat loss to atmosphere and mechanical forcing by moderate winds. Conditions at the front were favorable for forced symmetric instability, a mechanism drawing energy from the frontal geostrophic current. A clear signature of increased dissipation from symmetric instability could not be identified; however, this instability could potentially account for the increased dissipation rates at the front location down to 40 m depth that could not be explained by the atmospheric forcing. This turbulence was associated with turbulent heat fluxes of up to 10 W m−2, eroding the warm and cold intrusions observed between 30 and 60 m depth. A Seaglider sampled across a similar frontal structure in the same region 10 days after our survey. The submesoscale‐to‐turbulence‐scale transitions and resulting mixing can be widespread and important in the Atlantic sector of the Arctic Ocean. The front separates warm and salty Atlantic‐origin waters from cold and fresh Arctic‐origin waters. Energetic turbulence in the upper 30 m was consistent with convection by heat loss to the atmosphere and mechanical forcing by moderate winds at the surface of the ocean. At the front, the conditions were favorable for forced symmetric instability, a mechanism drawing energy from the large‐scale current. The contribution to turbulence from this instability could not be clearly identified but can be potentially important. Such observations linking 1–3 km scales to turbulence in the Arctic Ocean are rare. Turbulence at a front in the Arctic has consequences on the heat and nutrient transport from the slope to the deep Arctic Basin. Variability of the Indian Ocean (IO) shallow overturning circulation during 1958–2017 was investigated, which consisted of a cross‐equator cell (CEC) and a southern subtropical cell (SSTC). Structures of these shallow cells were examined through the velocity sections and the transport steamfunction patterns based on the newly released Ocean Reanalysis System 5 data set, and the results showed that the returning flows, at the subsurface, of the shallow cells mainly presented at the western boundary while absented in the ocean interior. Strengths of the IO shallow cells were then determined according to the annual‐mean meridional streamfunction profiles. Both the CEC and the SSTC exhibited significant variability on interannual to decadal timescales during 1958–2017, and this variability mainly resulted from changes in both meridional Ekman transports and meridional geostrophic flows in the upper layer, and each component could dominate the shallow cells' variations in certain years. Contributions of the geostrophic currents to the shallow cells were likely opposite to that of the Ekman transport in the South Indian Ocean during years when the latter reached the extremes. The CEC and the SSTC were negatively correlated during the research period. The CEC exhibited a decadal weakening during 2000–2015, contributing to the decadal increasing of the IO heat content, while the SSTC only experienced very little strengthening. Here this paper presents a comprehensively study of the interannual to decadal variability of the IO shallow cells and the corresponding reasons and influences and tried to link these variations with other variations in the IO. In western boundary current systems, sharp velocity gradients between the poleward flowing jet and coastal waters generally act to inhibit cross‐shelf exchange. Downstream of jet separation, dynamic mesoscale eddies dominate the flow. In the East Australian Current System, counter‐rotating eddy dipoles are often present which, in the appropriate configuration, have potential to drive cross‐shelf transport. However, this eddy dipole mode is poorly understood in the framework of cross‐shelf exchange and the effect of these structures on shelf waters is uncertain. Using 25 years of satellite altimetry, as well as in situ sampling of a typical dipole event, we investigate the characteristics of eddy‐driven cross‐shelf exchange. We show that the maximum onshore velocity is driven by an eddy dipole structure and occurs in a defined latitudinal band between 33°S and 34°S more than 50% of the time. We sample a typical eddy dipole and find a strong onshore jet, 37 km wide, with velocities up to 1.78 m s −1 and a transport of at least 16 Sv. Hydrographic data from an autonomous underwater glider show that this jet manifests on the shelf as a subsurface intrusion of warm salty water extending from offshore up onto the midshelf. In the light of climatic changes in western boundary current transport and the increase in their eddy kinetic energy, understanding eddy‐driven cross‐shelf exchange is important to predict future changes to the shelf water mass. Glaciers around the world are shrinking, yet in a region in northwestern High Mountain Asia (HMA), glaciers show growth. A proposed explanation for this anomalous behavior is related to the variability of the "Western Tibetan Vortex" (WTV), which correlates well with near‐surface temperatures in northwestern HMA. Using analytical formulations and ERA5 reanalysis data, we show that the WTV is the change of wind field resulting from changes in near‐surface temperature gradients in geostrophic flow and that it is not unique to northwestern HMA. Instead, we argue that net radiation is likely the main driver of near‐surface temperatures in Western HMA in summer and autumn. The decreasing strength of the WTV during summer in the twentieth century is thus likely the result of decreasing net radiation. We do argue that the WTV is a useful concept that could yield insights in other regions as well. The eddy‐abundant circulation in the northern South China Sea (NSCS) tends to be dynamically complex due to monsoon forcing, Kuroshio intrusion, and emitted internal waves from the Luzon Strait. This study uses 13‐year shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements (2004–2016), orbital altimeter data, and high‐resolution model output to perform wave‐vortex decompositions and investigate the scale of transition from dominantly geostrophic flows to internal wave motions in the northern South China Sea. The upper ocean kinetic energy spectra transition on scales exceeds 200 km. This large scale of transition is attributed to the energetic low‐mode internal waves (e.g., internal tides and inertia‐gravity waves). However, inconsistencies in the decomposition reveal that the assumptions of homogeneity and isotropy required for the 1‐D decomposition (Bühler et al., 2014) are sufficiently violated at smaller scales to affect the subdominant member of the decomposition on scales below 100 km. A method for direct quantification of the consequences by degree of violation using bootstrapping of the 2‐D model data is developed and illustrated. Observed and modeled sea surface height spectra flatten at scales smaller than 125 km, which is found in the model to be due to the coherent, semidiurnal internal waves. The large scale of transition between geostrophic and wave motions in the South China Sea is an irreducible uncertainty for altimeter velocities (e.g., the Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission). The recent dramatic decline of sea ice in the western Arctic Ocean changes the transfer of momentum across the ice‐ocean boundary layer. The surface stress energy input through the surface geostrophic current in the Beaufort Gyre (BG) based on a numerical model is 0.03 mW/m2 in 1992–2004 versus 0.23 mW/m2 in 2005–2017. This energy input is primarily concentrated over the southern Canada Basin and the Chukchi Sea. It is 1.38 × 1016 J in observations versus 4.90 × 1016 J in the model in the BG during 2003–2014. We find that some well‐known freshwater changes in the BG over 1992–2017 resulted from episodic extrema of energy input in 2007, 2012, and 2016. In particular, most of the energy input in 2007 was transformed into potential energy (57%) which resulted in a new state of freshwater budget. Our study suggests that as of 2016, the BG had not yet reached a saturated freshwater state. Our results provide a way to predict the future changes of BG freshwater content. In this study, data from space-based altimeters (Jason-2 and Satellite for ARgos and AltiKa [SARAL/AltiKa]) have been used to compute alongshore geostrophic currents in the coastal regions of the Indian mainland. These derived currents are compared with high-frequency (HF) radar observations. Beyond 30–40 km away from the coastline, altimeter-derived currents match fairly well with the HF radar data. Root mean square error (RMSE) of Jason-2-derived currents ranges between 0.3 and 0.6 m s−1 while the same in the case of SARAL/AltiKa lies between 0.3 and 0.7 m s−1. Satellite-derived across-track geostrophic current components (alongshore current) were also used to study the spatiotemporal variations of the east India coastal current (EICC). The coastal trapping of the EICC, its annual and intra-seasonal peaks are clearly observed in the power spectrum of time-series of Jason-2 and SARAL/AltiKa derived currents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Near-inertial waves (NIWs) are often an energetic component of the internal wave field on windy continental shelves. The effect of baroclinic geostrophic currents, which introduce both relative vorticity and baroclinicity, on NIWs is not well understood. Relative vorticity affects the resonant frequency feff, while both relative vorticity and baroclinicity modify the minimum wave frequency of freely propagating waves ωmin. On a windy and narrow shelf, we observed wind-forced oscillations that generated NIWs where feff was less than the Coriolis frequency f. If everywhere feff > f then NIWs were generated where ωmin < f and feff was smallest. The background current not only affected the location of generation, but also the NIWs' propagation direction. The estimated NIW energy fluxes show that NIWs propagated predominantly toward the equator because ωmin > f on the continental slope for the entire sample period. In addition to being laterally trapped on the shelf, we observed vertically trapped and intensified NIWs that had a frequency ω within the anomalously low-frequency band (i.e., ωmin < ω < feff), which only exists if the baroclinicity is nonzero. We observed two periods when ωmin < f on the shelf, but the relative vorticity was positive (i.e., feff > f) for one of these periods. The process of NIW propagation remained consistent with the local ωmin, and not feff, emphasizing the importance of baroclinicity on the NIW dynamics. We conclude that windy shelves with baroclinic background currents are likely to have energetic NIWs, but the current and seabed will adjust the spatial distribution and energetics of these NIWs. A deeper knowledge about geostrophic ocean surface currents in the northern Nordic Seas supports the understanding of ocean dynamics in an area affected by sea ice and rapidly changing environmental conditions. Monitoring these areas by satellite altimetry results in a fragmented and irregularly distributed data sampling and prevents the computation of homogeneous and highly resolved spatio-temporal datasets. In order to overcome this problem, an ocean model is used to fill in data when altimetry observations are missing. The present study provides a novel dataset based on a combination of along-track satellite-altimetry-derived dynamic ocean topography (DOT) elevations and simulated differential water heights (DWHs) from the Finite Element Sea ice Ocean Model (FESOM) version 1.4. This innovative dataset differs from classical assimilation methods because it substitutes altimetry data with the model output when altimetry fails or is not available. The combination approach is mainly based on a principal component analysis (PCA) after reducing both quantities by their constant and seasonal signals. In the main step, the most-dominant spatial patterns of the modeled differential water heights as provided by the PCA are linked with the temporal variability in the estimated DOT from altimetry by performing a principal component synthesis (PCS). After the combination, the annual signal obtained by altimetry and a constant offset are re-added in order to reference the final data product to the altimetry height level. Surface currents are computed by applying the geostrophic flow equations to the combined topography. The resulting final product is characterized by the spatial resolution of the ocean model around 1 km and the temporal variability in the altimetry along-track derived DOT heights. The combined DOT is compared to an independent DOT product, resulting in a positive correlation of about 80 %, to provide more detailed information about short periodic and finer spatial structures. The derived geostrophic velocity components are evaluated by in situ surface drifter observations. Summarizing all drifter observations in equally sized bins and comparing the velocity components shows good agreement in spatial patterns, magnitude and flow direction. Mean differences of 0.004 m s -1 in the zonal and 0.02 m s -1 in the meridional component are observed. A direct pointwise comparison between the combined geostrophic velocity components interpolated onto the drifter locations indicates that about 94 % of all residuals are smaller than 0.15 m s -1. The dataset is able to provide surface circulation information within the sea ice area and can be used to support a deeper comprehension of ocean currents in the northern Nordic Seas affected by rapid environmental changes in the 1995–2012 time period. Sediment cores from the Mediterranean Sea have evidenced several periods of Sapropel deposition, which can be explained by events of anoxic bottom conditions. An explanation for such events calls for a very stratified sea, possibly related with freshwater input through increased precipitations and runoff discharges. It has been suggested that such a stratified Mediterranean Sea may in turn weaken the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) through changes in the Mediterranean overflow water (MOW). Nevertheless, models used to establish this result were relatively simple and the mechanisms leading to such an impact remained elusive. To improve on those previous studies, we analyse the impact of different freshwater releases with rates of 0.2, 0.1, 0.05 and 0.02 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3/s) in the Mediterranean Sea using the IPSL-CM5A-LR model in a few multi-centennial simulations. We focus the analysis on the impact of a decrease in the MOW on the large-scale Atlantic circulation. We find a consistent change in horizontal currents in the upper Atlantic Ocean in all simulations in the first century, with a large enhancement of the northward current west of Rockall in the northeast Atlantic. Concerning the AMOC response, we identify three different processes that impact its fate. The first is related to changes in geostrophic currents at depth induced by the disappearance of the MOW, which tends to weaken the AMOC. On the contrary, the second enhances the AMOC and is associated with the increase in northward currents in the horizontal upper circulation. The last process is due to the spread of surface freshwater anomalies out of the Mediterranean Sea that freshens the North Atlantic convection sites and weakens the AMOC. Depending on the rate of the freshwater release, the strength and balance of these three processes are different. For rates larger than 0.05 Sv, we observe a strong reduction of the AMOC, while for lower rates, we notice an enhancement in the upper cell. The climatic response follows that of the upper AMOC with a warming of the North Atlantic for rates lower than 0.05 Sv and a cooling for higher rates. Given that past estimates of freshwater release in the Mediterranean Sea indicate rates lower than 0.05 Sv, we argue that Sapropel events may have enhanced of the upper AMOC and warmed of the North Atlantic. Combining cruise observations, satellite altimeter and Argos drifter data in the northeastern South China Sea in the spring of 2017, this paper reports a Luzon Cold Eddy (LCE), which originated near the northwestern coast of Luzon Island. Then it migrated northwestward and was sampled by the cruise transect to the southwest of Taiwan Island. In the core of the LCE, the isotherm, isohaline and isopycnal all uplifted by approximately 100 m within the depth range of 150–300 m. The corresponding geostrophic currents were consistent with satellite altimeter results. In addition, a double-index was applied to study the dynamical process for the LCE evolution. The index reflects well the intraseasonal variability of eddies and the Kuroshio pathway in the spring of 2017. During the second half of April, the enhancement of the LCE was regulated by the velocity shear resulting from a large anticyclonic eddy east of the Luzon Strait. Taken together, the results of this study demonstrate a better understanding of the circulation and mesoscale patterns and a potential implication for water mass renewal in the northeastern South China Sea. • The analysis of daily currents in the GoC and SoG using HFR and SAMPA model revealed an EOF Mode one that captured important coastal current patterns such as CCCs and eastward current intensification episodes. • Applying a real EOF decomposition on the SAMPA time series provided the extension to a spatial dominion that comprised the GoC, SoG and westernmost Alboran Sea areas. • The main CCC and eastward current intensification events are connected along the three areas. These intense and extensive current intensification processes seem to be triggered by a synchronized action of local winds over the GoC and additional remote effects which are coming from (i) the wind forcing over the Alboran Sea and the easternmost side of the SoG and (ii) the MSLP forcing over the Ligurian Sea. Several studies about the coastal circulation over the continental shelf of the Gulf of Cadiz have been published in the last twenty years. One of the most studied features in these papers are the so-called Coastal Counter Currents (CCCs) which are located roughly between the 100 m isobath and the coastline and are directed westwards. Despite the considerable number of articles devoted to the analysis of this phenomenon, the actual along-coast extension and origin of these CCCs currently remain unclear. In the present study, different mechanisms are proposed to explain the development of these CCCs. They have been revised and discussed taking into account the latest findings from a recent analysis that utilized surface currents derived from High Frequency Radar (HFR) as well as numerical model simulations. The most interesting finding is that the most intense CCCs events are initiated on the coastal margin of the westernmost side of the Strait of Gibraltar, and they are extended further west of Cape Santa Maria. Furthermore, these intense and extensive CCCs seem to be triggered by the joint action of local winds over the Gulf of Cadiz and additional remote effects which are coming from (i) the wind forcing over the Alboran Sea and the easternmost side of the Strait of Gibraltar, and (ii) the Sea Level Atmospheric Pressure forcing over the Ligurian Sea (western Mediterranean Sea). In addition, the same forcing mechanisms are valid to explain the eastward intensification of the coastal currents. The most relevant feature of the hydrodynamic pattern originated by this combination of forcing agents is its quasi-geostrophic adjustment against the coast in the whole spatial dominion. In addition, these results offer a clear example of how important the effects of forcing in rather remote regions may be in defining the hydrodynamic patterns of certain oceanographic regions. We investigated the characteristics of seasonal variations in sea surface salinity (SSS) in the subtropical North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans by analyzing observational datasets. As noted in previous studies, the seasonal variation in SSS markedly differs between the western and eastern parts of the basins. These contrasting seasonal variations in SSS have nonnegligible impacts on surface density for each basin and translate into changes in temperature at the outcropping isopycnals of about 1.0 °C. Further analysis of the mixed-layer salinity budget reveals that the zonally contrasting seasonality is attributed to a combination of seasonal variations in the freshwater flux and mixed layer (ML) depth. In the western basins, the wintertime increase in evaporation and reduction in precipitation, as well as the vertical entrainment of salty water below the ML contribute to salinification, whereas the seasonal freshening in summer is mostly attributed to increase in precipitation, reduction in evaporation, and strengthening of geostrophic currents. In contrast, evaporation exceeds precipitation throughout a year in the eastern basins, and seasonal variations in freshwater flux cannot fully explain the seasonal cycle of SSS in the region. Rather, the wintertime freshening there is aided by the deepening of the ML, which acts to mitigate salinification by the evaporation and sustain vertical entrainment of fresher water below the ML. Summertime salinification there can be understood as a mirror image of the wintertime condition, but seasonal strengthening of Ekman currents and associated salinity advection also play a role. Understanding the role of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) during the Last Interglacial (LIG, ∼127 ka) may advance our knowledge on decadal climate variability in a warmer world. In this study, we investigate the PDO–precipitation relationship over eastern China during the LIG based on the NorESM2-LM, which shows the best performance in capturing the observed PDO pattern and the PDO–precipitation relationship among 12 models from the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase 4. Composite analysis shows that summer precipitation during the LIG is generally increased over eastern China in the positive PDO phases relative to the negative phases, which is different from the "drier-wetter-drier" triple pattern in the present day. The discrepant precipitation patterns between the LIG and preindustrial are caused by different responses of composite atmospheric circulations. Moreover, moisture budget analysis indicates that variations of vertical velocity over eastern China largely explain the PDO-linked precipitation patterns during both LIG and preindustrial, although the main causes for vertical motion changes are different across regions and periods based on the quasi-geostrophic ω equation. Additionally, these discrepancies in composite atmospheric circulations are largely linked to differences in PDO patterns and mean climate states between the LIG and preindustrial. Our results suggest a varying relationship between the PDO and precipitation over eastern China in a warmer-than-present world induced by Earth's orbit, which have important implications for PDO reconstructions during the LIG via the PDO-precipitation relationship reported here and shed light on decadal variability of precipitation as well as the associated decadal predictions in a future warmer world. • Divergent response of eastern China precipitation to PDO during the LIG. • Discrepant composite atmospheric circulations cause varied precipitation patterns. • PDO pattern/mean climate state regulate varied precipitation during the LIG jointly. The large set of CTD data obtained within the NABOS program in 2002–2008 is analyzed. The description of variability of θ, S-indices, and flow rate of the geostrophic current transporting Atlantic water along the continental slope of the Eurasian Basin is presented. It is shown that the dramatic warming of Atlantic water registered in 2006 was accompanied by an increase in the flow rate of the geostrophic currents throughout its path in the Eurasian Basin up to 142° E. The current characteristics derived from CTD data are given. The variability of hydrological parameters characterizing the Atlantic water flow in the Eurasian Basin is interpreted. The results are important reference data and can also be used for the comparative assessment of the amplitudes of variability of 9 and S-indices arising from climate change in the Arctic Basin. In this paper, we evaluate the neXtSIM sea ice model with respect to the observed scaling invariance properties of sea ice deformation in the spatial and temporal domains. Using an Arctic setup with realistic initial conditions, state-of-the-art atmospheric reanalysis forcing and geostrophic currents retrieved from satellite data, we show that the model is able to reproduce the observed properties of this scaling in both the spatial and temporal domains over a wide range of scales, as well as their multi-fractality. The variability of these properties during the winter season is also captured by the model. We also show that the simulated scaling exhibits a space–time coupling, a suggested property of brittle deformation at geophysical scales. The ability to reproduce the multi-fractality of this scaling is crucial in the context of downscaling model simulation outputs to infer sea ice variables at the sub-grid scale and also has implications for modeling the statistical properties of deformation-related quantities, such as lead fractions and heat and salt fluxes. For more than 20 years, the multi-satellite Data Unification and Altimeter Combination System (DUACS) has been providing near-real-time (NRT) and delayed-time (DT) altimetry products. DUACS datasets range from along-track measurements to multi-mission sea level anomaly (SLA) and absolute dynamic topography (ADT) maps. The DUACS DT2018 ensemble of products is the most recent and major release. For this, 25 years of altimeter data have been reprocessed and are available through the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). Several changes were implemented in DT2018 processing in order to improve the product quality. New altimetry standards and geophysical corrections were used, data selection was refined and optimal interpolation (OI) parameters were reviewed for global and regional map generation. This paper describes the extensive assessment of DT2018 reprocessing. The error budget associated with DT2018 products at global and regional scales was defined and improvements on the previous version were quantified (DT2014; Pujol et al., 2016). DT2018 mesoscale errors were estimated using independent and in situ measurements. They have been reduced by nearly 3 % to 4 % for global and regional products compared to DT2014. This reduction is even greater in coastal areas (up to 10 %) where it is directly linked to the geophysical corrections applied to DT2018 processing. The conclusions are very similar concerning geostrophic currents, for which error was globally reduced by around 5 % and as much as 10 % in coastal areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In May 2012, we conducted a hydrographic survey over the Carlsberg Ridge in the northwest Indian Ocean. In this paper, we use these station data, in combination with some free-floating Argo profiles, to obtain the sectional temperature and salinity fields, and subsequently, the hydrographic characteristics are comprehensively analyzed. Through the basic T-S diagram, three salty water masses, Arabian Sea High-Salinity Water, Persian Gulf Water, and Red Sea Water, are identified. The sectional data show a clear ventilation structure associated with Arabian Sea High-Salinity Water. The 35.8psu salty water sinks at 6.9°N and extends southward to 4.4°N at depths around the thermocline, where the thermocline depth is in the range of 100 to 150m. This salty thermocline extends much further south than the climatology indicates. Furthermore, the temperature and salinity data are used to compute the absolute geostrophic current over the specific section, and the results show meso-scale eddy vertical structure different from some widely used oceanic reanalysis data. We also find a west-propagating disturbance at 6°N, and the related features are described in terms of phase speed, horizontal and vertical structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
