252. Commissioning of an improved superconducting RF photo injector at ELBE

Abstract

In order to produce high-brightness electron beams in a superconducting RF photo injector, the most important point is to reach a high acceleration field in the cavity. For this reason two new 3.5-cell niobium cavities were fabricated, chemically treated and cleaned in collaboration with Jlab. The first of these two cavities was shipped to HZDR and assembled in new cryomodule. This new gun (SRF Gun II) was installed in the ELBE accelerator hall in May 2014 and replaces the previous SRF Gun I which was in operation since 2007. Beside the new cavity the ELBE SRF gun II differs from the previous gun by the integration of a superconducting solenoid in the cryomodule. After a first test run with a Cu cathode the gun will be operated with normal-conducting Cs2Te photo cathodes.

Abstract

The ELBE facility with its 40 MeV C.W. LINAC has recently received an upgrade in terms of new secondary radiation sources and beam lines, while advancing the accelerator infrastructure towards 1.6 mA C.W. operation (1.0 mA before). Therefore, the machine interlock system (MIS) was in parts redesigned to meet the new timing requirements resulting from the increased overall beam power. It comprises fast beam loss detection and a PLC based equipment protection system (EPS), tripping the key components of the electron sources. The former tripping system using PLC interrupts was replaced by an in-house developed staggered CPLD based system with optical transmission and a PROFINET IO interface for control system integration. The EPS is distributed on several PLCs and has been improved in terms of M2M communication. Further, the vacuum inrush protection was completely renewed using brought-in equipment. This contribution depicts the technical features and performance of the MIS subsystems, as well as the challenges posed by the project track of the ELBE upgrade during implementation.

265. Critical Dependence of the Excitonic Absorption in Cuprous Oxide on Experimental Parameters

Abstract

We study the modification of the exciton absorption in cuprous oxide by the presence of free carriers excited through above band gap excitation. Without this pumping, the absorption spectrum below the band gap consists of the yellow exciton series with principal quantum numbers up to more than n= 20, depending on the temperature, changing over to an about constant, only slowly varying absorption above the gap. Careful injection of free carriers, starting from densities well below 1 μm–3, leads to a reduction of the band gap through correlation effects. The excitons in the Rydberg regime above n= 10 remain unaffected until the band gap approaches them. Then they lose oscillator strength and ultimately vanish upon crossing with the band gap.

Abstract

We show that the dissociation threshold of an exciton, a bound electron-hole pair, by an electric field is mainly determined by its energy: as expected, the dissociation voltage decreases with increasing exciton energy. However, within the multiplet of states belonging to a particular principal quantum number n, the dissociation voltage rises with increasing state energy, in contrast to the expectations based on energy arguments. This behavior is demonstrated for the yellow exciton states of Cu2O and is attributed to the distribution of the wavefunction in the potential landscape, where the lower (higher) lying state in the multiplet is shifted away (towards) the tunnel barrier.

Abstract

RF photo cathode electron guns are the source of choice for most high-performance accelerator systems. Their advantages are the ability to produce very bright beams of electrons with high bunch charges and small transverse and longitudinal emittance. At present, their drawback is the limited average current since the high RF fields in the cavities require a pulsed operation. On the other hand, advanced light sources uses linear accelerators with superconducting RF cavities which can operate in the cw mode and produce high average current electron beams. A preferred injector for these accelerators would be a photo electron gun with superconducting RF cavities. In a research project [1], a superconducting RF photo electron gun (SRF gun) has been developed during the last years at the Forschungszentrum Rossendorf. The SRF gun was put successfully into operation and the efficiency of the concept could be demonstrated. A helium bath cryostat was used to cool down the cavity to 4.2 K. In a daily cycle the cryostat was filled up with liquid helium in the morning followed by a measuring time in the afternoon. The resonator is a niobium half cell with TESLA geometry operating at 1.3 GHz. The photo cathode had a Cs2Te layer deposited in a preparation chamber connected with the gun. In contrast to the cavity the cathode is not superconducting. It is thermally isolated from the cavity and its heat load goes in a special nitrogen cooling system. The cathode was illuminated by an UV laser of 263 nm with a micropulse frequency of 26 MHz and a maximum energy per pulse of 40 nJ. For evaluation of the produced electron beam a beam line is installed with two solenoids, insertable mask and view screens, spectrometer magnet, kicker cavity and Faraday-cup. Abstract

The last century has seen enormous progress in our understanding of the Universe. We know the life cycles of stars, the structure of galaxies, the remnants of the big bang, and have a general understanding of how the Universe evolved. We have come remarkably far using electromagnetic radiation as our tool for observing the Universe. However, gravity is the engine behind many of the processes in the Universe, and much of its action is dark. Opening a gravitational window on the Universe will let us go further than any alternative. Gravity has its own messenger: Gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of spacetime. They travel essentially undisturbed and let us peer deep into the formation of the first seed black holes, exploring redshifts as large as z ~ 20, prior to the epoch of cosmic re-ionisation. Exquisite and unprecedented measurements of black hole masses and spins will make it possible to trace the history of black holes across all stages of galaxy evolution, and at the same time constrain any deviation from the Kerr metric of General Relativity. eLISA will be the first ever mission to study the entire Universe with gravitational waves. eLISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using gravitational waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. Abstract

Pyrenophora tritici-repentis is a necrotrophic fungus causal to the disease tan spot of wheat, whose contribution to crop loss has increased significantly during the last few decades. Pathogenicity by this fungus is attributed to the production of host-selective toxins (HST), which are recognized by their host in a genotype-specific manner. To better understand the mechanisms that have led to the increase in disease incidence related to this pathogen, we sequenced the genomes of three P. tritici-repentis isolates. A pathogenic isolate that produces two known HSTs was used to assemble a reference nuclear genome of approximately 40 Mb composed of 11 chromosomes that encode 12,141 predicted genes. Comparison of the reference genome with those of a pathogenic isolate that produces a third HST, and a nonpathogenic isolate, showed the nonpathogen genome to be more diverged than those of the two pathogens. Examination of gene-coding regions has provided candidate pathogen-specific proteins and revealed gene families that may play a role in a necrotrophic lifestyle. Analysis of transposable elements suggests that their presence in the genome of pathogenic isolates contributes to the creation of novel genes, effector diversification, possible horizontal gene transfer events, identified copy number variation, and the first example of transduplication by DNA transposable elements in fungi.Overall, comparative analysis of these genomes provides evidence that pathogenicity in this species arose through an influx of transposable elements, which created a genetically flexible landscape that can easily respond to environmental changes.

277. The Impact of Stellar Collisions in the Galactic Center

Abstract

We consider whether stellar collisions can explain the observed depletion of red giants in the Galactic center. We model the stellar population with two different IMFs: 1) the Miller-Scalo and 2) a much flatter IMF. In the former case, low-mass main-sequence stars dominate the population, and collisions are unable to remove red giants out to 0.4 pc although brighter red giants much closer in may be depleted via collisions with stellar-mass black holes. For a much flatter IMF, the stellar population is dominated by compact remnants (i.e. black holes, white dwarfs and neutron stars). The most common collisions are then those between main-sequence stars and compact remnants. Such encounters are likely to destroy the main-sequence stars and thus prevent their evolution into red giants. In this way, the red-giant population could be depleted out to 0.4 pc matching observations. If this is the case, it implies the Galactic center contains a much larger population of stellar-mass black holes than would be expected from a regular IMF. Se presentan tres nuevos casos de embarazo complicado con cirrosis hepática en dos pacientes del Hospital San Juan de Dios, de Cúcuta. Una de estas pacientes con hipertensión portal y Síndrome de Banti recibe tratamiento quirúrgico y cursa luego una gestación bajo control médico sin complicaciones. Otra paciente a quien se le descubre su cirrosis durante el embarazo, no recibe tratamiento, presenta numerosas complicaciones y tiene un parto prematuro. Se discute el papel que juegan las hormonas sexuales durante el embarazo sobre la función hepática. Se recalca la importancia de buscar alteraciones de función hepática durante el control prenatal cuando los síntomas y signos así lo indiquen.

Abstract

Locally enriched hydrogen as in stratification may contribute to early containment failure in the course of severe nuclear reactor accidents. During accident sequences steam might accumulate as well to stratifications which can directly influence the distribution and ignitability of hydrogen mixtures in containments. An international code benchmark including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Lumped Parameter (LP) codes was conducted in the frame of the German THAI program. Basis for the benchmark was experiment TH24.3 which investigates the dissolution of a steam layer subject to natural convection in the steam-air atmosphere of the THAI vessel. The test provides validation data for the development of CFD and LP models to simulate the atmosphere in the containment of a nuclear reactor installation. In test TH24.3 saturated steam is injected into the upper third of the vessel forming a stratification layer which is then mixed by a superposed thermal convection. In this paper the simulation benchmark will be evaluated in addition to the general discussion about the experimental transient of test TH24.3. Concerning the steam stratification build-up and dilution of the stratification, the numerical programs showed very different results during the blind evaluation phase, but improved noticeable during open simulation phase. Der Aufbau ökonomisch und ökologisch effizienter Stoff-Kreisläufe im Bereich des Recycling von Elektronikschrott ist für die Etablierung des noch jungen Wirtschaftszweiges eine wesentliche Voraussetzung. Dies erfordert geeignete Ansätze des Qualitätsmanagements, die eine optimale Gestaltung der Recyclingprozesse im Hinblick auf eine optimale Kundenorientierung erlauben. Zu diesem Zweck wird nachfolgend ein Instrumentarium dargestellt, daß die am Recyclingprozeß beteiligten Unternehmen bei der Analyse der jeweiligen Kundenanforderungen und der Ausgestaltung ihrer Prozesse unterstützt. Im Rahmen des Projekts wird ein Instrumentarium entwickelt, das eine Qualitätsverbesserung der Prozesse und Produkte beim Elektronikschrott-Recycling unterstützten soll. Ausgangspunkt der Verbesserung sind die entlang der gesamten Prozeßkette gestellten Anforderungen der jeweiligen Kunden an die Produktqualität. Ausgehend von einer prozeßorientierten Betrachtungsweise werden Qualitätsregelkreise entwickelt , die über die Analyse der Produktanforderungen und der Recyclingprozesse eine optimale Prozeßgestaltung und -lenkung ermöglichen sollen.

Abstract

Small and medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the former GDR struggle with the typical shortcomings of SMEs (Mugler, 1995), and additionally have to deal with a phalanx of well-established competitors from Western Germany. The lack of specific management knowledge in Eastern German firms further reduces their chances of survival (Albach, 1995). In this situation the formation of co-operative SME Networks could be a means of strengthening their collective market position. In a longitudinal study at the Chemnitz-Zwickau University of Technology research is carried out on the development of five co-operative networks. The influence of the radical environmental changes is conceptualized with the resource dependence perspective (Pfeffer & Salancik, 1978); the evolution of the networks is based on the theory of Giddens (1984).

295. Individual and Contextual Determinants of Electoral Participation

Abstract

Individual-level explanations of electoral participation typically argue that non-voting is determined by a combination of facilitative and motivational factors. We advance the argument that, beyond individual characteristics, there are pivotal contextual features which enable or impede individual action through specific incentive structures. Thus, contextual factors influence the individual propensity to vote or to abstain. For the first time the data of Selects 2003 allows for the testing of contextual effects, at least on the cantonal level. Several multilevel analyses show that high party competition, compulsory voting, and strong Catholicism foster individual participation. The findings clearly indicate that an individual's propensity to vote is influenced by personal characteristics as well as by cantonal attributes.

Abstract

Die Wiederverwertung bzw. -verwendung von Stoffen und/oder Bauteilen im Sinne einer Kreislaufwirtschaft macht eine umfassende Qualitätssicherung in einem möglichst frühen Stadium des Recyclingprozesses notwendig. Die Etablierung eines Marktes für rezyklierte Stoffe und Bauteile setzt die Erfüllung entsprechender Qualitätsanforderungen voraus. Diese entlang der logistischen Kette jeweils kundenseitig an den Lieferanten gestellten Anforderungen müssen dabei als Grundlage für die Ausgestaltung der Recycling-Teilprozesse betrachtet werden. Im Rahmen eines Forschungsvorhabens wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Demontage- und Verwertungsbetrieben ein Instrumentarium entwickelt, das ein prozeßorientiertes Qualitäts- und Logistikmanagement im Kfz-Recyclingbereich ermöglicht.
