The food irradiation process has been used since the early twentieth century and is technologically established as an important conservation method by eliminating or reducing pathogenic microorganisms, ensuring food quality and safety. The aim of this research was to approve the effect of a gamma irradiation process (Co60) and identify the presence of Campylobacter spp. in chilled chicken hearts, sold in an industry under sanitary inspection, located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro/RJ, for three weeks. Irradiation was performed at COPPE/UFRJ, using a Gamma Cell Irradiator with a 60Co gamma source. The hearts of 50 chickens were collected randomly and separated into two groups, one contaminated (CAMPY) on purpose with the intention of observing the efficiency of the gamma irradiation (Co60) process in the control of Campylobacter spp., and the other group (NC) naturally derived from the industrial plant. The two groups (contaminated and uncontaminated) were divided into four subgroups, CONTROL samples (non-irradiated), and samples submitted to 1.5 kGy, 3.0 kGy and 4.5 kGy doses, all samples were kept chilled with artificial ice. At the end of the study, the presence of Campylobacter spp. was observed in samples CAMPY, and derived from the industry NC, while the irradiation process was efficient in the control of Campylobacter spp. at 1.5 kGy, 3.0 kGy and 4.5 kGy in both subgroups analyzed. However, it was also concluded that a lower dose of irradiation than the lowest dose used in this study, ie 1.5 kGy, would be efficient in eliminating microorganisms

On this research, we aimed to discuss the prescribed work in the Brazilian federal document Common National Base Curriculum (CNBC), regarding the teaching and practices of linguistics analysis didactic proposal in the middle school, identifying the linguistics-discoursive features which configure the textualization of the prescribed work. We sought contributions on Bronckart (2006,2008,2012) and Machado (2009) to show our theoretical framework based on the Sociodiscoursive Interactionism approach for the notion of prescribed work to the teacher. We also tied it with researches about mother language teaching taken from Mendonça (2006), Antunes (2003;2014), Silva (2015) and Neves (2018) for the concepts of language, interaction and contemporary Portuguese language teaching. Anchored on Mendonça’s reflections, we understand the linguistics analysis section at CNBC document may promote student’s overview about the linguistics facts embeded in the textual production (speaking and writing) as well as for widely understanding of the linguistic system, and create citizens able to produce lots of textual genres with autonomy and adaptation. Based upon the qualitative methodology, we accomplished this research based on the interpretation method which the analytics categories proposed by Machado and Bronckart (2002;2005), spotlighting the prescribed acting, outside determiners, purposes and intentions that entail the actors and agents were embraced in this research corpus. Firstly, we investigated the BNCC document and its linguistics analysis didactic proposal discussion for the Portuguese teaching in order to describe the conceptions prescribed on the document. After that, we interpreted the semantic roles given teachers away, verifying the tools and the roles prescribed to them. This research showed us that, as a national document that focuses on the education development, it requires a comprehensive unfolding that specifies the teacher’s work, enunciating his/her role in the tasks of teaching and learning. To the same extent, it has been needed the engagement to the practice with the linguistics analysis didactic proposal in the Portuguese language classes, stressing language teaching leaned on the interaction, getting students analysts on their own language and not bounded users in the social practices.

To use a computer, users with spinal cord injury must employ special tools that, in most cases, demand a great effort. In online courses, such tools often become a distraction, which might hinder the learning process. Solutions such as tongue mouses, smart glasses and computer vision systems, although promising, still face considerable usability problems. On the other hand, ANA, our conversational agent that can hear and listen to the student, has proven quite promising [1]. Tests have shown that, while using our assistant, tetraplegia were able to focus more on their studies than on the system’s interface. In this paper, we present our latest advances on ANA’s architecture, introducing a computational grammar that allows for the insertion in online courses of “learning objects” (LOs) to which students can talk in a natural way. Those LOs respond by performing the requested action. We present the grammar used for processing commands in natural language and show how it is integrated with Google’s conversational AI assistant.

This innovative practice full paper presents a Metaphorical Debugger Model (JAD) to support deaf and hearing impaired in the process of learning how to program in Java. In Brazil, 9.7 million people are deaf or hearing impaired (DHI). DHI people usually face several barriers to get proper education. During a series of Java classes conducted by our team, we verified that these difficulties were also related to the use of software that is not tailored for their impairment. We also saw that DHI students encountered many problems while developing and evolving their codes using the traditional tools, for instance, visual signs to perform tasks, can be difficult to understand, in addition, the high degree of abstraction required for the programming logic, can be an accessibility barrier for them. Thus, we decided to propose JAD aiming to provide accessible debugging for DHI. The JAD uses the concept of metaphorical interfaces, adopting appropriate symbols and signs borrowed from traffic to aid in the process of code debugging and evolution. In this paper, we present some user studies with JAD. The results suggest that Java programmers, DHI e non-DHI, had similar performance in task related to software evolution when JAD was used.

This Innovate Practice Full Paper document presents a technological ecosystem for classroom management that we call GSA. GSA is meant to be used in any class/ of any subject/k-college and supports electronically mediated in class, engaging activities learning strategies to reduce dropout rates and create more learning opportunities. In the previous study, we interviewed 123 8th and 9th-grade students and 15 teachers who had been using the GSA for two weeks. The results were promising. An increase in the level of motivation was observed. Being able to mediate in real time, teacher/student interactions create opportunities to capture valuable data that can be used to feed performance/dropout predictors. In this paper, we discuss the introduction of these predictors and how they can be used to foster preemptive measures to mitigate the problem.

The composition of several independently manageable and operable systems in order to create a system of systems may require adaptations due to the rise of emergent behaviours. An inadequate identification, by the requirement engineer, of how a new behaviour impacts the constituent systems could lead to conflicts and poor operation of the system. Therefore, identifying and resolving such scenarios is crucial for defining adaptation strategies as well assuring the achievement of the system global requirements. In this paper, a systematic adaptation-oriented requirement modeling approach for Systems of Systems, called ADORE, is presented. The proposed approach relies on the Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) framework and Goal-oriented Requirements Engineering concepts to define three phases, each of them with a specific output model, that aim at modelling the system domain, identifying the collaborative tasks and analysing the scenarios and adaptations strategies. The approach is used to model a drone medical delivery system in order to demonstrate its applicability.

To interact with a computer, users with tetraplegia must to use special tools/devices that, in most cases, require a great effort. In online education, these tools normally become a distraction, which might hinder learning. Solutions like tongue mouses, smart glasses and computer vision systems, although promising, still face problems of use. This paper introduces ANA, a natural language system which can hear the student and see what is being presented on the interface. With new affordance, learning objects (LO)can have their own grammar, which allows a much more natural voice interaction. LOs respond either by audio or performing the requested action. Tests performed with people with tetraplegics show that the creation of such a shared workspace brings a statistically significant reduction in effort while taking on online lessons and their respective workshops.

The present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the irradiation process in the control of Campylobacter spp. in chilled chicken heart samples, since this microorganism is related to the contamination of meat and chicken giblets and is responsible for enteritis in humans. The methodology and standards recommended by RDC no. 12 (Brazil, 2001) were applied for the bacteriological analyses. The chilled chicken heart samples were acquired in an industry that undergoes sanitary inspection, located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Samples were divided into two groups, non-contaminated (NC - originally from the industrial plant) and contaminated (CAMPY– contaminated with C. jejuni ATCC 33291/CCAMP/FIOCRUZ 00262 strains by CCAMP/LABZOO/IOC/FIOCRUZ), subsequently separated into four groups: NC and CAMPY control groups and samples irradiated at 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 kGy. The eight subgroups were analyzed for the presence of Campylobacter sp. No statistically significant difference was observed between the four groups namely the non-irradiated controls and the 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 kGy irradiated samples (p> 0.05). Elimination of Campylobacter sp. was observed, with no bacterial growth in any of the irradiated, non-contaminated (CN) and infected (CAMPY) samples. Thus, the efficiency of the Co60 irradiation process of chilled chicken heart for the elimination of the surveyed microorganisms was proven. The lowest dose applied was sufficient to eliminate the enteric pathogen which is of great significance in a public health point of view. However, it should be noted that the Brazil legislation determining the microbiological standards for food does not include a microbiological standard for Campylobacter sp. This means that any amount of this enteric pathogen may bring public health risks. Key words: Food irradiation; chicken heart; Campylobacter sp.; Foodborne illness; public health.

General Medicine - Abstract

The present study investigated the water mobility in muscle of salted sardines (Sardinella brasiliensis) on different days of storage, by the use of Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF NMR 1H). The exponential fitting of the transverse relaxation (T2) data revealed three components (three pools): one with a relaxation time of 11.2–17.5 ms; a second with a relaxation time ranging from 35.3 to 44.7 ms and the third with a relaxation time of 161.7–256.5 ms. Conventional physical and chemical analyses revealed changes in the quality of the salted fish during storage. A close correlation was observed between the indication of quality (good, regular and poor) obtained through the physical and chemical parameters analyzed (cooking test, presence of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide), and the relaxation data (NMR) (p

The marine species of snapper, Lutjanus analis, has carnivorous eating habits and with potential for cultivation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the apparent digestibility coefficient (CDA) of mutton snapper, and to evaluate its enzymatic profile after feeding with vegetable and animal protein sources. CDA was the indirect method of fecal collection, using chromic oxide as a biological marker. Eight hundred fish, with an average weight of 28.0 ± 2.58 g, were acclimated for 15 days in a net tank (2 m³), and installed in the same collection environment. The acclimatization of 54 fish was carried out in digestibility aquariums (200 L), and the collection of feces started. For mutton snapper, the supply of octopus flour improves (P

Angola is a founding member of SADC and shares jointly with other States a series of common objectives and strategies. However, it has different interests in the integration process, both from a political-military point of view and from an economic-social point of view, within its objectives and strategic and security interests. The main objective of the research was to analyze the geo-economic dynamics in the process of Angola's integration into SADC, based on the question of SADC's operational functionality in the context of optimizing Angola's strategic national interests, which is the starting point of the dissertation. The description and analysis of the geopolitical / geo-strategic and geo-economic factors shows that the country has the potential to optimize its strategic resources and safeguard national strategic interests, projecting itself as a State-Director in the southern region of the continent. But Angola's integration process in SADC has been oriented towards broadening its political-security influence, playing a relevant role in the various political-military processes that are taking place in the region. While in the economic field it maintains a gradualist position in the face of the deepening of economic integration, due to the existing regional asymmetries and the creation of conditions that allow it to minimize its vulnerabilities in the regional market. The spleen is the most commonly injured intra-abdominal organ in blunt trauma1. The diagnosis of splenic trauma can be delayed because 40% of patients can be asymptomatic in the initial evaluation. We present two cases of a 32 and 39-year-old women with a Grade IV splenic lesion for a blunt abdominal trauma. A partial splenectomy was performed in both cases.
