Abstract: We report precision measurements of the Feynman x (xF) dependence, and first measurements of the transverse momentum (pT) dependence, of transverse single-spin asymmetries for the production of pi0 mesons from polarized proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 200 GeV. The xF dependence of the results is in fair agreement with perturbative QCD model calculations that identify orbital motion of quarks and gluons within the proton as the origin of the spin effects. Results for the pT dependence at fixed xF are not consistent with these same perturbative QCD-based calculations.

Abstract: The first measurements of xF-dependent single-spin asymmetries of identified charged hadrons, pi+/-, K+/-, and protons, from transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at 62.4 GeV at RHIC are presented. Large asymmetries are seen in the pion and kaon channels. The asymmetries in inclusive pi+ production, AN(pi+), increase with xF from 0 to approximately 0.25 and AN(pi-) decrease from 0 to approximately -0.4. Observed asymmetries for K- unexpectedly show positive values similar to those for K+, increasing with xF, whereas proton asymmetries are consistent with zero over the measured kinematic range. Comparisons of the data with predictions of QCD-based models are presented.

Abstract: We measure directed flow (v_{1}) for charged particles in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 and 62.4 GeV, as a function of pseudorapidity (eta), transverse momentum (p_{t}), and collision centrality, based on data from the STAR experiment. We find that the directed flow depends on the incident energy but, contrary to all available model implementations, not on the size of the colliding system at a given centrality. We extend the validity of the limiting fragmentation concept to v_{1} in different collision systems, and investigate possible explanations for the observed sign change in v_{1}(p_{t}).

Abstract: We present measurements of net charge fluctuations in $Au + Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV, $Cu + Cu$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 62.4, 200 GeV, and $p + p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 200 GeV using the dynamical net charge fluctuations measure $\nu_{+-{\rm,dyn}}$. We observe that the dynamical fluctuations are non-zero at all energies and exhibit a modest dependence on beam energy. A weak system size dependence is also observed. We examine the collision centrality dependence of the net charge fluctuations and find that dynamical net charge fluctuations violate $1/N_{ch}$ scaling, but display approximate $1/N_{part}$ scaling. We also study the azimuthal and rapidity dependence of the net charge correlation strength and observe strong dependence on the azimuthal angular range and pseudorapidity widths integrated to measure the correlation., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, STAR Collaboration

Abstract: The recent availability of 14.6 GeV/c per nucleon 16O and 28Si ions from the Brookhaven National Laboratory Tandem-AGS accelerator facility has prompted the design, construction and operation of a large-solid-angle (25 msr) magnetic spectrometer with particle identification from ∼0.5 to ∼4.7 GeV/c. A small-solid-angle Cherenkov counter complex views the target through the magnet and extends the particle identification up to ∼15 GeV/c. This experiment (E-802) employs event characterization detectors, a charged-particle multiplicity array, a highly segmented lead-glass detector, and a zero degree calorimeter. The facility measures momentum spectra of identified heavy-ion-produced hadrons with high resolution (Δp/p≤0.005) as a function of collision centrality given by triggers from the event characterization detectors. Construction and performance details of the spectrometer components and auxiliary detectors are described.

Abstract: Semi-inclusive spectra of {pi}{sup {plus minus}}, {ital K}{sup {plus minus}}, and {ital p} have been measured near midrapidity for central collisions of 14.6{ital A}-GeV/{ital c} {sup 28}Si with {sup 197}Au nuclei. The invariant cross sections are all well fit by exponential distributions in transverse mass, within the measured ranges. The {pi} and {ital K} cross sections can also be fit by Boltzmann distributions. From integrated yields, at midrapidity, the kaon/pion yield ratios are (19.2{plus minus}3)% for {ital K}{sup +}/{pi}{sup +} and (3.6{plus minus}0.8)% for {ital K}{sup {minus}}/{pi}{sup {minus}}; the {pi}{sup +}/{pi}{sup {minus}} ratio is 1.00{plus minus}0.04.

Abstract: Particle production of identified charged hadrons, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}},{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}},p$, and $\overline{p}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathit{NN}}}=$ 200 GeV, has been studied as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality at $y=0$ and $y~1$ by the BRAHMS experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. Significant collective transverse flow at kinetic freeze-out has been observed in the collisions. The magnitude of the flow rises with the collision centrality. Proton and kaon yields relative to the pion production increase strongly as the transverse momentum increases and also increase with centrality. Particle yields per participant nucleon show a weak dependence on the centrality for all particle species. Hadron production remains relatively constant within one unit around midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathit{NN}}}=$ 200 GeV.

Abstract: We have measured rapidity densities dN/dy of pi+/- and K+/- over a broad rapidity range (-0.1 < y < 3.5) for central Au + Au collisions at square root(sNN) = 200 GeV. These data have significant implications for the chemistry and dynamics of the dense system that is initially created in the collisions. The full phase-space yields are 1660 +/- 15 +/- 133 (pi+), 1683 +/- 16 +/- 135 (pi-), 286 +/- 5 +/- 23 (K+), and 242 +/- 4 +/- 19 (K-). The systematics of the strange to nonstrange meson ratios are found to track the variation of the baryochemical potential with rapidity and energy. Landau-Carruthers hydrodynamics is found to describe the bulk transport of the pions in the longitudinal direction.

Abstract: Charged-particle pseudorapidity densities are presented for the $d+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}$ reaction at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=200\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$ with $\ensuremath{-}4.2\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\le}4.2$. The results, from the BRAHMS experiment at BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are shown for minimum-bias events and 0%--30%, 30%--60%, and 60%--80% centrality classes. Models incorporating both soft physics and hard, perturbative QCD-based scattering physics agree well with the experimental results. The data do not support predictions based on strong-coupling, semiclassical QCD. In the deuteron-fragmentation region the central 200 GeV data show behavior similar to full-overlap $d+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}$ results at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=19.4\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$.

Abstract: We report on a study of the transverse momentum dependence of nuclear modification factors ${R}_{d\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}}$ for charged hadrons produced in $\mathrm{\text{deuteron}}\text{ }\text{ }+\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{\text{gold}}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=200\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$, as a function of collision centrality and of the pseudorapidity ($\ensuremath{\eta}=0$, 1, 2.2, 3.2) of the produced hadrons. We find a significant and systematic decrease of ${R}_{d\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}}$ with increasing rapidity. The midrapidity enhancement and the forward rapidity suppression are more pronounced in central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. These results are relevant to the study of the possible onset of gluon saturation at energies reached at BNL RHIC.

Abstract: The BRAHMS experiment at RHIC has measured pions, kaons and protons and their antiparticles over a wide range of rapidity and transverse momenta. Au+Au collisions, d+Au and p+p interactions have been studied. From the net-proton rapidity distribution a stopping power of 73% can be deduced for central Au+Au collisions. The rapidity distributions of produced particles exhibit Gaussian shapes. At midrapidity the nuclear modification factor for central Au+Au collisions shows a strong pion suppression at intermediate transverse momenta; a suppression which is even stronger at forward rapidities. The nuclear modification factor for d+Au changes from a Cronin-like enhancement of charged hadrons at midrapidity to a suppression at forward rapidities.

Abstract: Charged-particle pseudorapidity densities are presented for the d + Au reaction at sqrt[s(NN)] = 200 GeV with -4.2or = etaor = 4.2. The results, from the BRAHMS experiment at BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are shown for minimum-bias events and 0%-30%, 30%-60%, and 60%-80% centrality classes. Models incorporating both soft physics and hard, perturbative QCD-based scattering physics agree well with the experimental results. The data do not support predictions based on strong-coupling, semiclassical QCD. In the deuteron-fragmentation region the central 200 GeV data show behavior similar to full-overlap d+Au results at sqrt[s(NN)] = 19.4 GeV.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra and rapidity densities, dN/dy, of protons, antiprotons, and net protons (p-p) from central (0%-5%) Au+Au collisions at square root of S(NN)=200 GeV were measured with the BRAHMS experiment within the rapidity range 0/=y/=3. The proton and antiproton dN/dy decrease from midrapidity to y=3. The net-proton yield is roughly constant for y1 at dN/dy approximately 7, and increases to dN/dy approximately 12 at y approximately 3. The data show that collisions at this energy exhibit a high degree of transparency and that the linear scaling of rapidity loss with rapidity observed at lower energies is broken. The energy loss per participant nucleon is estimated to be 73+/-6 GeV.

These measurements indicate a high energy loss of the high ${p}_{T}$ particles in the medium created in the central $\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}$ collisions. The lack of suppression in $d+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}$ collisions makes it unlikely that initial state effects can explain the suppression in the central $\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}$ collisions.

Abstract: We present transverse momentum spectra of unidentified charged hadrons at two pseudo-rapidities (η = 0, 2.2) as well as the first results on identified negatively charged pions at rapidity 2.2 from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. The high p T yields of charged hadrons in the most central collisions show a strong suppression when compared to expected binary-scaled yields from nucleon-nucleon collisions or semi-peripheral collisions. Abstract: Two-pion correlation functions are analyzed at mid-rapidity for three systems (14.6 A-GeV Si+Al, Si+Au, and 11.6 A-GeV Au+Au), seven distinct centrality conditions, and different kT bins in the range 0.1--0.5 GeV/c. Source reference frames are determined from fits to the Yano-Koonin source parameterization. Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters are shown to scale linearly with both number of projectile and total participants as obtained from a Glauber model calculation. A finite emission duration that increases linearly with system/centrality is also reported. The mT dependence of the Bertsch-Pratt radii is measured for the central Si+Au and Au+Au systems. The system/centrality dependence is investigated separately for both high and low mT regions.

Abstract: Measurements, with the BRAHMS detector, of the antiproton-to-proton ratio at midrapidities and forward rapidities, are presented for Au+Au reactions at s{sub NN}=130 GeV , and for three different collision centralities. For collisions in the 0%--40% centrality range, we find N({bar p})/N(p)=0.64{+-} 0.04{sub (stat)}{+-}0.06{sub ( syst)} at y{approx}0 , 0.66{+-}0.03{+-}0.06 at y{approx}0.7 , and 0.41{+-}0.04{+-}0.06 at y{approx}2 . The ratios are found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum. The antiproton and proton rapidity densities vary differently with rapidity, and indicate a significant degree of collision transparency, although a net-baryon free midrapidity plateau (Bjorken limit) is not yet reached.

Abstract: The status of stopping in heavy ion reactions is reviewed by comparing available data in pp, pA and AA systems over the energy regime sqrt(s_NN) ~ 2.5 - 130 GeV/c. The data consist of average rapidity losses, anti-proton over proton ratios, and net-baryon values at mid-rapidity. The overall features of nuclear stopping are reasonbly well described by simple extrapolations of pp, and pA collisions to AA, 10 pages incl. 8 figures. Abstract: Measurements of the A dependence and pseudorapidity interval $(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta})$ dependence of midrapidity ${E}_{T}$ distributions in a half-azimuth (\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\varphi}=\ensuremath{\pi}) electromagnetic calorimeter are presented for $p+\mathrm{Be},$ $p+\mathrm{Au},$ O+Cu, Si+Au, and Au+Au collisions at the BNL-AGS (Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron). The shapes of the upper edges of midrapidity ${E}_{T}$ distributions as a function of the pseudorapidity interval \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} in the range 0.3 to 1.3, roughly centered at midrapidity, are observed to vary with \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}, like multiplicity---the upper edges of the distributions flatten as \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} is reduced. At the typical fixed upper percentiles of ${E}_{T}$ distributions used for nuclear geometry characterization by centrality definition---7 percentile, 4 percentile, 2 percentile, 1 percentile, 0.5 percentile---the effect of this variation in shape on the measured projectile ${A}_{p}$ dependence for ${}^{16}\mathrm{O},$ ${}^{28}\mathrm{Si},$ ${}^{197}$Au projectiles on an Au target is small for the ranges of \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} and percentile examined. The ${E}_{T}$ distributions for $p+\mathrm{Au}$ and $p+\mathrm{Be}$ change in shape with \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}; but in each \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} interval the shapes of the $p+\mathrm{Au}$ and $p+\mathrm{Be}$ distributions remain indentical with each other---a striking confirmation of the absence of multiple-collision effects at midrapidity at AGS energies. The validity of the nuclear geometry characterization versus \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} is illustrated by plots of the ${E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta})$ distribution in each \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} interval in units of the measured $〈{E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}){〉}_{p+\mathrm{Au}}$ in the same \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} interval for $p+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions. These plots, in the physically meaningful units of ``number of average $p+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions,'' are nearly universal as a function of \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}, confirming that the reaction dynamics for ${E}_{T}$ production at midrapidity at AGS energies is governed by the number of projectile participants and can be well characterized by measurements in apertures as small as \ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\varphi}=\ensuremath{\pi}, \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}=0.3.

Abstract: Proton and deuteron distributions from 11.6A GeV/c Au + Au collisions measured by the E802 Collaboration in experiment E-866 are presented. The invariant yield of protons and deuterons is studied as a function of the transverse mass for different cuts of rapidity and centrality. At low mt−m0 the proton and deuteron invariant spectra deviate from a single exponential shape. The average mt as function of centrality and rapidity is used to explore the effect of collective transverse flow in the reaction. The ratio of the deuteron to squared proton yield as a function of transverse momentum, rapidity, and centrality is used to probe the coalescence model of deuteron production. This ratio is constant as a function of rapidity only for the most central cuts and decreases with the centrality for every rapidity cut. The ratio of the differential cross section of the deuteron to the squared differential cross section of the proton, for the most central cut, is not constant as a function of mt−m0.

Abstract: Positive pion and kaon production from Au+Au reactions have been measured as a function of beam energy over the range 2.0-10.7~AGeV. Both the kaon and the pion production cross-sections at mid-rapidity are observed to increase steadily with beam kinetic energy. The ratio of K$^+$ to $\pi^+$ mid-rapidity yields increases from 0.0271$\pm0.0015\pm0.0014$ at 2.0~AGeV to 0.202$\pm0.005\pm0.010$ at 10.7~AGeV and is larger than the K$^+$/$\pi^+$ ratio from p+p reactions over the same beam energy region. Abstract: Charged kaon production has been measured in Si+Al and Si+Au collisions at 14.6 A GeV/c, and Au+Au collisions at 11.1 A GeV/c by Experiments 859 and 866 (the E--802 Collaboration) at the BNL AGS. Invariant transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions for both K+ and K- are presented. The centrality dependence of rapidity-integrated kaon yields is studied. Strangeness enhancement is observed as an increase in the slope of the kaon yield with the total number of participants as well as the yield per participant. The enhancement starts with peripheral Si+Al and Si+Au collisions (relative to N+N) and appears to saturate for a moderate number of participating nucleons in Si+Au collisions. It is also observed to increase slowly with centrality in Au+Au collisions, to a level in the most central Au+Au collisions that is greater than that found in central Si+A collisions. The enhancement factor for $K^+$ production are 3.0 +-0.2(stat.) +-0.4(syst.) and 4.0 +-0.3(stat.) +-0.5(syst.), respectively, for the most central 7% Si+Au collisions and the most central 4% Au+Au collisions relative to N+N at the correponding beam energy., Comment: RevTeX style, 18 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. 290. Entrance-channel effects in quasifission reactions

Abstract: The entrance-channel dependence of the distribution of reaction strength has been studied for three systems, namely $^{32}\mathrm{S}$${+}^{182}$W, $^{48}\mathrm{Ti}$${+}^{166}$Er, and $^{60}\mathrm{Ni}$${+}^{154}$Sm, which all lead to the compound system $^{214}\mathrm{Th}$ in complete fusion reactions. The cross sections for elastic/quasielastic scattering, deeply inelastic, and fissionlike processes were measured at beam energies of ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{lab}}$ =166, 177, 222, 260 MeV for $^{32}\mathrm{S}$${+}^{182}$W, ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{lab}}$=220, 240, 270, 298 MeV for $^{48}\mathrm{Ti}$${+}^{166}$Er, and ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{lab}}$=339, 390, 421 MeV for $^{60}\mathrm{Ni}$${+}^{154}$Sm, respectively. The maximum contribution of complete-fusion fission processes to the fissionlike cross section is estimated on the basis of expected angle-mass correlations for such reactions. The results show a strong entrance-channel dependence as predicted by the extra-push model. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Rapidity distributions of baryons from nucleus-nucleus, {ital p}-nucleus, and {ital p}-{ital p} interactions at 11.6, 14.6, and 200 GeV/{ital c} per nucleon incident momenta are reviewed. Average rapidity losses relative to the beam rapidity are derived in a consistent way and the systematics are described and discussed. The baryon multiplicities in the midrapidity region relative to simple geometrical sum rules are determined and the systematics of the opacity of the collisions are described. The main conclusions are that the average rapidity losses in central nucleus-nucleus collisions scale with the projectile rapidity and that the opacity of central collisions depends strongly on the size of the collision system and weakly on incident momentum.

Abstract: A ring-imaging \v{C}erenkov counter read out by a 100-channel PMT of active area 10$\times$10 cm$^2$ was operated successfully in a test beam at the BNL AGS with several radiator gases, including the heavy fluorocarbon C$_4$F$_{10}$. Abstract: Antiproton production cross sections have been measured in minimum bias [ital p]+Be, [ital p]+Al, [ital p]+Cu, and [ital p]+Au collisions at 14.6 GeV/[ital c] with the E-802 spectrometer at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The antiproton multiplicity at laboratory rapidities 1.0 to 1.6 shows almost no dependence upon the target mass. The [ital [bar p]] production for [ital p]+Be is somewhat lower than an estimation based upon 19--24 GeV/[ital c] [ital p]+[ital p] data. In this rapidity interval the antiproton yield scales by a factor of 28[plus minus]6 from [ital p]+Au to central Si+Au collisions.

Abstract: Experimental particle yield ratios from 14.6[ital A]-GeV/[ital c][sup 28]Si interactions with nuclei at intermediate impact parameters are correlated with the orientation of the transverse momentum of projectile fragments. The [pi][sup [plus minus]]/[ital p] ratio increases and the ([ital d]+[ital t])/[ital p] ratio decreases when fragments are deflected toward the observing spectrometer. Asymmetries are confined to the target rapidity region. Assuming a spectator participant model, these results suggest the presence of significant rescattering of particles with dependences on the collision geometry.

Abstract: Experimental results are presented on the charge, velocity, and angular distributions of intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) for the reaction Fe+Au at bombarding energies of 50 and 100 MeV/nucleon. Results are compared to the quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) model and a modified QMD which includes a Pauli potential and follows the subsequent statistical decay of excited reaction products. The more complete model gives a good representation of the data and suggests that the major source of IMFs at large angles is due to multifragmentation of the target residue.

Abstract: The E802 Spectrometer at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron has been used to measure the correlation in relative momentum between like-sign pions emitted in central Si + Al and Si + Au collisions at 14.6A GeV/c. Data are presented in terms of the correlation function for both identified pi(-) and pi(+) pairs near the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass rapidity. All parametrizations of the correlation function are consistent with a spherically symmetric source of rms radius 3.5 +/- 0.4 fm and lifetime fm/c.

Abstract: Particle production in proton-induced reactions at 14.6 GeV/{ital c} on Be, Al, Cu, and Au targets has been systematically studied using the E-802 spectrometer at the BNL-Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. Particles are measured in the angular range from 5{degree} to 58{degree} and identified up to momenta of 5, 3.5, and 8 GeV/{ital c} for pions, kaons, and protons, respectively. Mechanisms for particle production are discussed in comparison with heavy-ion-induced reactions at the same incident energy per nucleon.
