254. The Dangers of LSD: Analysis of Seven Months' Experience in a University Hospital's Psychiatric Service

Abstract

The symptoms, diagnostic categories, and general characteristics of patients in 70 cases of adverse reactions to lysergic acid diethylamide tartrate (LSD) are varied. Psychiatric side effects ranged from depressive reaction to psychotic states. In all cases, LSD ingestion occurred separately and apart from medical-experimental and psychiatric-therapeutic models of LSD usage. Findings based on these cases and from observations made on LSD users in the community indicate that widespread use of LSD is a cause for concern.

Abstract

An easily manoeuvrable small-animal operating table, to be used in conjunction with halothane anaesthesia, and a method of hypophysectomy in rats under halothane anaesthesia introduced by intubation, are described. The advantages of halothane anaesthesia and animal manoeuvrability in surgical procedures are discussed.

257. Glass-Ceramics for High Precision Reflective-Optic Applications

Abstract

Titania- and zirconia-nucleated glasses in the basic Li_2Al_2O_4–SiO_2 system were found suitable for casting relatively large mirror blanks. Upon heat treatment, these glasses crystallized uniformly to yield transparent, very low expansion β quartz solid solution glass-ceramics. Special care was required in processing large diameter blanks, owing to localized temperature increases resulting from the exothermic heat of crystallization. Glass-ceramics with a wide range of β quartz solid solution stability resulted in a uniform product. Transparent glass-ceramic mirror blanks were obtained with average expansion coefficients from 5°C to 50°C of 0 ± 0.3 × 10^−7/°C. Ware up to 15 cm thick was processed to less than 10 mμ/cm strain, with no change in expansion or transparency through the blank. Work with thick ware provided additional insight into the problems that might be encountered in the fabrication of very large castings.

258. BeO·Al2O3·SiO2 system: Structural relationships of crystalline, glassy, and molten beryl

Abstract

Physical property measurements are reported for beryl glass and for three 60 mole % SiO2 melts (including beryl) at temperatures above 1600° C. Electron micrographic evidence shows that beryl glass has undergone a two-liquid phase separation. Density measurements of this glass and its melt can be interpreted in terms of the dissociation of Si6O18-12 rings as beryl melts incongruently. The presence of discrete BeO4 tetrahedra and AlO6 octahedra in molten beryl is suggested by the electrical conductance and viscosity data for these melts.

262. No effect of cigarette smoking on electroencephalographic nonlinearity.

Abstract

The Gaussian surrogate-date procedure was applied to the measurement of the effect of cigarette smoking on the dimensional complexity of normal, resting EEG. Evidence of significant nonlinearity in the EEG was obtained, replicating previous results. However, unlike EEG dimensional complexity, EEG nonlinearity (difference between original and surrogate data) was not affected by smoking. This indicates that, under resting conditions, smoking/nicotine may have a modulating effect on input from the reticular activating system, with such input having a global, linearizing effect on cortical dynamics. Nonlinear dynamics resulting from intracortical processes appear not to be affected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
