252. Gyromagnetic ratios of low-lying rotational states in156, 158, 160Gd

Abstract

Transient-field precessions were measured simultaneously for levels in the ground-state bands of156, 158, 160Gd as ions of these nuclei traversed a thin polarized Fe foil. Relative g-factors of levels up to 61+ were deduced, those of the 41+ levels being determined with greatest precision. In contrast with the conclusions of the recent report by Alzner et al. [1], our results are consistent with g(41+) having the same value in all three isotopes and imply g(21+)=g(41+) in156Gd, consistent with nuclear structure models.

Abstract

Transient-field precessions were measured simultaneously for the 21+ states of188,190,192Os as ions of these nuclei traversed a thin polarized iron foil. In contrast with most earlier measurements, the relative gyromagnetic ratios deduced here are independent of the level lifetimes. Emphasis is placed upon determination of theg-factor of the first excited state in190Os, as disparities in measurements of the lifetimes of this level have led to uncertainties in itsg-factor.

Abstract

g -ray spectroscopy of the high-spin states of the neutron-deficient nucleus 187Pb has been conducted with the 155Gd(36Ar,4n) reaction. A cascade of three transitions was deduced from g -g coincidence data gated by detection of recoiling evaporation residues in a gas-filled recoil separator. In an earlier, separate experiment, two of these g rays were positively identified with 187Pb by recoil-g coincidence measurements with a high-resolution, recoil mass spectrometer. From comparison with similar sequences in heavier odd-A lead isotopes, the cascade in 187Pb is associated with the sequence of three E2 transitions from the yrast 25/2 + level to a low-lying 13/2 + isomer. The variation of excitation energy with mass number of the levels concerned suggests that their structure can be associated with weak coupling of an odd i13/2 neutron to states in the spherical well. However, the possibility that they are influenced by mixing with states in the prolate-deformed well cannot be discounted.
