The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a promising predictive and prognostic factor in breast cancer. We investigated its ability to predict disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with luminal A- or luminal B-HER2-negative breast cancer who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). Pre-treatment complete blood cell counts from 168 consecutive patients with luminal breast cancer were evaluated to assess NLR. The study population was stratified into NLRlow or NLRhigh according to a cut-off value established by receiving operator curve (ROC) analysis. Data on additional pre- and post-treatment clinical-pathological characteristics were also collected. Kaplan–Meier curves, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional hazards models were used for statistical analyses. Patients with pre-treatment NLRlow showed a significantly shorter DFS (HR: 6.97, 95% CI: 1.65–10.55, p = 0.002) and OS (HR: 7.79, 95% CI: 1.25–15.07, p = 0.021) compared to those with NLRhigh. Non-ductal histology, luminal B subtype, and post-treatment Ki67 ≥ 14% were also associated with worse DFS (p = 0.016, p = 0.002, and p = 0.001, respectively). In a multivariate analysis, luminal B subtype, post-treatment Ki67 ≥ 14%, and NLRlow remained independent prognostic factors for DFS, while only post-treatment Ki67 ≥ 14% and NLRlow affected OS. The present study provides evidence that pre-treatment NLRlow helps identify women at higher risk of recurrence and death among patients affected by luminal breast cancer treated with NACT.

Purpose: To review the effects of polysaccharides and their proposed mechanisms of action in breast cancer experimental models. Data sources, selection, and extraction: Articles were selected by using PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Medline, assessed from 1 May 2019 to 1 July 2020. The systematic review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (Prospero) under the number CRD42020169103. Results: Most of the studies explore algae polysaccharides (43.2%), followed by mushrooms (13.5%), plants (13.5%), fruits (10.8%), fungus (2.7%), bacteria, (2.7%), and sea animals (2.7%). A total of 8.1% investigated only in vitro models, 62.1% evaluated only in vivo models, and 29.7% evaluated in vitro and in vivo models. The mechanism of action involves apoptosis, inhibition of cellular proliferation, angiogenesis, and antimetastatic effects through multiple pathways. Conclusions: Findings included here support further investigations on the anti-tumor effect of polysaccharides. Some polysaccharides, such as fucoidan and β-glucans, deserve detailed and structured studies aiming at translational research on breast tumors, since they are already used in the clinical practice of other proposals of human health.

Visibility algorithms are a family of methods that map time series into graphs, such that the tools of graph theory and network science can be used for the characterization of time series. This approach has proved a convenient tool, and visibility graphs have found applications across several disciplines. Recently, an approach has been proposed to extend this framework to multivariate time series, allowing a novel way to describe collective dynamics. Here we test their application to fMRI time series, following two main motivations, namely that (a) this approach allows vs to simultaneously capture and process relevant aspects of both local and global dynamics in an easy and intuitive way, and (b) this provides a suggestive bridge between time series and network theory that nicely fits the consolidating field of network neuroscience. Our application to a large open dataset reveals differences in the similarities of temporal networks (and thus in correlated dynamics) across resting-state networks, and gives indications that some differences in brain activity connected to psychiatric disorders could be picked up by this approach. Here we present the first application of multivariate visibility graphs to fMRI data. Visibility graphs are a way to represent a time series as a temporal network, evidencing specific aspects of its dynamics, such as extreme events. Multivariate time series, as those encountered in neuroscience, and in fMRI in particular, can be seen as a multiplex network, in which each layer represents a time series (a region of interest in the brain in our case). Here we report the method, we describe some relevant aspects of its application to BOLD time series, and we discuss the analogies and differences with existing methods. Finally, we present an application to a high-quality, publicly available dataset, containing healthy subjects and psychotic patients, and we discuss our findings. All the code to reproduce the analyses and the figures is publicly available.

A novel approach rooted on the notion of consensus clustering, a strategy developed for community detection in complex networks, is proposed to cope with the heterogeneity that characterizes connectivity matrices in health and disease. The method can be summarized as follows: (a) define, for each node, a distance matrix for the set of subjects by comparing the connectivity pattern of that node in all pairs of subjects; (b) cluster the distance matrix for each node; (c) build the consensus network from the corresponding partitions; and (d) extract groups of subjects by finding the communities of the consensus network thus obtained. Different from the previous implementations of consensus clustering, we thus propose to use the consensus strategy to combine the information arising from the connectivity patterns of each node. The proposed approach may be seen either as an exploratory technique or as an unsupervised pretraining step to help the subsequent construction of a supervised classifier. Applications on a toy model and two real datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, which represents heterogeneity of a set of subjects in terms of a weighted network, the consensus matrix.

Em sua maior parte, essa produção é realizada por meio da utilização de sementes, que são sensíveis a diversos fatores, entre estes injúrias provocadas por insetos-praga. Para o controle dessas pragas em sementes, diversas metodologias alternativas de tratamento podem ser empregadas: metabólitos secundários vegetais, organismos biocontroladores, indutores de resistência, controle físico e manejo integrado. Logo, estudos na área de tratamento alternativo de sementes é uma das bases para a fomentação de uma agricultura sustentável, em que muitas são as possibilidades de pesquisa e trabalho

The notion of utopia accompanies the entire period of Tommaso Fiore’s reflection, starting from Masonic influences that induce him to take part in World War I, like the foundation of a “reign of utopia”, as he wrote in his trench notebooks. Disappointed, however, by the violence of reality, Fiore moves to socialistic-liberal positions that lead him again to reflect on the utopian matrices of European political thought, mostly in Thomas More and Erasmus of Rotterdam. The most mature point of this progressive realistic correction of the concept of utopia would be reached after World War II, as soon as Fiore would pay attention to Soviet Socialism structures, identifying them as the model of a viable social bliss, a “land of utopia” example that was realized and can be imitated.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects structural connectivity, triggering the reorganization of structural–functional circuits in a manner that remains poorly understood. We focus here on brain network reorganization in relation to postural control deficits after TBI. We enrolled young participants who had suffered moderate to severe TBI, comparing them to young, typically developing control participants. TBI patients (but not controls) recruited prefrontal regions to interact with two separated networks: (1) a subcortical network, including parts of the motor network, basal ganglia, cerebellum, hippocampus, amygdala, posterior cingulate gyrus, and precuneus; and (2) a task-positive network, involving regions of the dorsal attention system, together with dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal regions. We also found that the increased prefrontal connectivity in TBI patients was correlated with some postural control indices, such as the amount of body sway, whereby patients with worse balance increased their connectivity in frontal regions more strongly. The increased prefrontal connectivity found in TBI patients may provide the structural scaffolding for stronger cognitive control of certain behavioral functions, consistent with the observations that various motor tasks are performed less automatically following TBI and that more cognitive control is associated with such actions. Using a new hierarchical atlas whose modules are relevant for both structure and function, we found increased structural and functional connectivity in prefrontal regions in TBI patients as compared to controls, in addition to a general pattern of overall decreased connectivity across the TBI brain. Although this increased prefrontal connectivity reflected interactions between brain areas when participants were at rest, the enhanced connectivity was found to be negatively correlated with active behavior such as postural control performance. Thus our findings, obtained when the brain was at rest, potentially reflect how TBI patients orchestrate task-related activations to support behavior in everyday life. In particular, our findings of enhanced connectivity in TBI might help these patients overcome deficits in cerebellar and subcortical connections, in addition to compensating for deficits when interacting with the task-positive network. Hence, it appears that greater cognitive control is exerted over certain actions in order to overcome deficits in their automatic processing.

During 2009–2014, incarceration rates in Brazil rose 34%, and tuberculosis (TB) cases among prisoners rose 28.8%. The proportion of national TB cases that occurred among prisoners increased from 6.2% to 8.4% overall and from 19.3% to 25.6% among men 20–29 years of age.

This paper describes a methodology for assessing the applicability of the flow forming process for the manufacture of specific components. The process starts by filtering potential candidates for flow forming from a component collection and then carries out a detailed assessment of quantitative, technological and economic feasibility before determining a viable process plan. The process described uses analytical relationships and criteria drawn from the literature. For example, qualitative feasibility is evaluated using analytical relationships for ultimate strength prediction. Similarly technological validation is done estimating forming process forces and defects rate which are evaluated against threshold values. A process time model is used to develop a hybrid cost model in order to evaluate economic feasibility. Using these calculated values production feasibilities are established by comparison with reported reduction ratios and process parameters. The paper concluded with a brief summary of the results of applying the process to an industrial case study.

Manufacturing engineers are frequently asked to select the best process for creating components but often the judgement is qualitative rather than quantitative. This paper presents a methodology (DCFA – Differential Cost and Feasibility Analysis) for assessing the technological and economic feasibility of using Near Net Shape (NNS) processes for the manufacturing of specific components. The methodology examines changes in raw material usage and finish processes (e.g. machining processes) that would result from adaption of a new manufacturing process. To illustrate the method, a case study that assesses the feasibility of using centrifugal casting for the production of valve cages is detailed. The case study concludes that the application of this process to the current manufacturing lines could result in significant cost reductions (particularly in machining time and reduction of scrappage). The feasibility methodology is generic and can potentially be used to investigate the application of a broad range of NNS processes in general manufacturing applications. Further, the developed cost models also allow the economic impact of a new process to be assessed, even at the early stages of product design.

A síndrome da morte súbita da soja tem causado sérios problemas na cultura. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito dos óleos essenciais de copaíba, nim, manjericão, menta e palma rosa no crescimento micelial de Fusarium solani f. sp. glycines, agente causal desta doença. Foram testadas quatro concentrações dos óleos essenciais, 4000, 6000, 8000 e 1000 µL/L de meio BDA (batata-dextrose-ágar). Discos miceliais de 3 mm de diâmetro foram inoculados no centro das placas de Petri contendo o meio BDA com os tratamentos, medindo se o crescimento micelial sete dias após a incubação das placas. Com exceção dos óleos essenciais de nim e copaíba, os demais inibiram completamente o desenvolvimento micelial. Esses resultados demonstram o potencial antifúngico destes óleos essenciais no controle desta doença

O objetivo foi avaliar a qualidade microbiológica e físico-química de sorvetes comercializados a granel em Limoeiro do Norte, Ceará, Brasil. Amostras de sorvete, sabor chocolate, foram coletadas em cinco estabelecimentos que comercializam gelados comestíveis a granel tipo “self-service”. Foram determinados coliformes termotolerantes, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus e Salmonella sp., além dos parâmetros físico-químicos e composição centesimal. Os resultados foram comparados com os obtidos na análise de sorvetes industrializados e com a legislação Brasileira. Os aspectos higiênicos sanitários dos estabelecimentos que comercializam sorvetes a granel foram avaliados por meio de uma lista de verificação em boas práticas. Todas as amostras de sorvetes comercializados a granel (100%) e 60% das amostras de sorvetes industrializados analisadas apresentaram-se em desacordo com os padrões microbiológicos preconizados pela legislação Brasileira apresentando níveis inaceitáveis de coliformes termotolerantes e Staphylococcus aureus, o que pode estar associado às condições higiênicas dos estabelecimentos uma vez que 60% das sorveterias avaliadas foram classificadas no grupo III (alto risco) de acordo com a lista de verificação em boas práticas. Além disso, parte dos sorvetes apresentaram teores inferiores de proteínas e gorduras lácteas, sendo, portanto, necessária uma maior fiscalização por parte dos órgãos competentes a fim de evitar danos ao consumidor.

Resumo O Sistema de Informação de Tratamentos Especiais de Tuberculose (SITE-TB) surgiu da necessidade principal de monitorar, rotineiramente, todas as pessoas com tuberculose drogarresistente (TBDR) no Brasil, e qualificar o controle dos fármacos antituberculose. Desenvolvido pelo Centro de Referência Professor Hélio Fraga e pelo projeto Management Sciences for Health/Brasil, esse sistema online foi implantado em 2013, em todas as Unidades da Federação. Além da TBDR, no SITE-TB são registradas pessoas com tuberculose sensível com indicação de esquema especial, e aquelas com micobacterioses não tuberculosas identificadas por diagnóstico diferencial de tuberculose. Toda pessoa com tuberculose confirmada deve ser notificada no Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (Sinan). Em situações nas quais se faz necessário tratamento com esquema especial, o caso é encerrado no Sinan e notificado no SITE-TB. Profissionais das unidades de referência para tuberculose fazem a notificação e acompanhamento desses casos no sistema, assim como a gestão dos medicamentos.

Resumo: Os objetivos deste artigo foram validar um método de classificação dos serviços de saúde (atenção básica vs. outros níveis) e descrever a descentralização do atendimento da tuberculose (TB) para a atenção básica no Brasil no período de 2002 a 2016. Os serviços de saúde que notificaram e acompanharam pessoas com TB foram classificados como “atenção básica” ou “outros níveis”, considerando-se o tipo de estabelecimento registrado no Cadastro Nacional de Estabelecimentos de Saúde (CNES). Foi estimada a concordância entre essa classificação e uma realizada em 2013 pelos programas estaduais e municipais de TB. Posteriormente, utilizando-se o CNES, calculou-se o percentual de pessoas com TB atendidas na atenção básica no período de 2002 a 2016. A concordância foi de 94,4% e o índice kappa global foi 0,86. Houve um incremento relativo de 31,2% do atendimento de TB na atenção básica (50,9% em 2002 para 66,8% em 2016). Todas as regiões apresentaram aumento desse percentual, exceto a Região Sul. A classificação baseada no CNES permitiu analisar a evolução da descentralização do atendimento da TB para a atenção básica no Brasil.

Priming is an alternative to improve the performance of seeds that have germination problems, such as Urochloa brizantha seeds. This study aimed at evaluating the appropriate hydration period and chemical agents used for priming, via direct immersion, in the physiological quality and carbohydrate content of U. brizantha seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3 x 4 factorial arrangement, with four replicates of each treatment, consisting of lower, median and higher hydration periods, in the phase II of the absorption curve, and agents used for priming: water, gibberellin, sucrose and antioxidant (riboflavin). Germination and vigor tests were carried out, as well as carbohydrate contents determination, in the seeds. It was observed that seeds hydrated in the lower period show higher physiological potential. Priming with gibberellin provides a greater seedling emergence, and with sucrose higher carbohydrate contents.

RESUMO Com o mercado cada vez mais competitivo e consumidores mais exigentes é de suma importância buscar alternativas mais eficientes e diversificadas para a melhoria da qualidade de sorvetes. Este trabalho teve como objetivo desenvolver sorvetes sabor goiaba utilizando galactomanana de Caesalpinia pulcherrima em substituição a estabilizantes, avaliar suas propriedades e comparar com dois estabilizantes comumente utilizados (goma xantana e super liga neutra). Para caracterizar os sorvetes foram feitas análises de overrun, resistência ao derretimento, umidade, cinzas, proteínas, lipídios, carboidratos, sólidos totais e pH. A qualidade microbiológica foi investigada pelas análises de coliformes a 45 °C/g, Estafilococos coagulase positiva/g e Salmonella sp/25 g. Sensorialmente, foram avaliados a intenção de compra e os atributos sensoriais de cor, aroma, textura, sabor e impressão global. Foram realizadas três formulações de sorvetes, modificando o estabilizante empregado: super liga neutra (T1), galactomanana de C. pulcherrima (T2) e goma xantana (T3). A taxa de derretimento mostrou-se similar até 35 minutos para as três formulações, mostrando-se comportamentos lineares. As amostras de sorvetes apresentaram um bom valor de overrun. Nenhuma das variáveis físico-químicas apresentou diferença estatística entre si. Sensorialmente, a formulação T2 apresentou desempenho semelhante a T1 e T3. No entanto, o sorvete da formulação T3 apresentou no atributo textura uma nota melhor que o estabilizante super liga neutra (T1). Todas as formulações apresentaram altos índices de intenção de compra por parte dos provadores. Todos os sorvetes produzidos apresentaram-se de acordo com a legislação vigente demonstrando que a galactomanana de Caesalpinia pulcherrima pode ser utilizada como substituto aos estabilizantes convencionais.

A consistent finding in migraine is reduced cortical habituation to repetitive sensory stimuli. This study investigated brain dynamics underlying the atypical habituation to painful stimuli in interictal migraine. We investigated modulations in effective connectivity between the sources of laser evoked potentials (LEPs) from a first to final block of trigeminal LEPs using dynamic causal modelling (DCM) in a group of 23 migraine patients and 20 controls. Additionally, we looked whether the strength of dynamical connections in the migrainous brain is initially different. The examined network consisted of the secondary somatosensory areas (lS2, rS2), insulae (lIns, rIns), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), contralateral primary somatosensory cortex (lS1), and a hidden source assumed to represent the thalamus. Results suggest that migraine patients show initially heightened communication between lS1 and the thalamus, in both directions. After repetitive stimulations, connection strengths from the thalamus to all somatosensory areas habituated in controls whereas this was not apparent in migraine. Together with further abnormalities in initial connectivity strengths and modulations between the thalamus and the insulae, these results are in line with altered thalamo-cortical network dynamics in migraine. Group differences in connectivity from and to the insulae including interhemispheric connections, suggests an important role of the insulae.

The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is caused by the highly transmissible severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which has affected the global population despite socioeconomic status and amazed surveillance agencies for its incidence, mortality, and recovery rates. COVID-19 affects all age groups; however, it is suggested to progress into severe disease and cause mortality in over 10% of the confirmed cases, depending on the individual characteristics of the affected population. One of the biggest unanswered questions it is why only some individuals develop into the severe stages of the disease. Current data indicate that most of the critically ill are the elderly or those with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, and asthma. However, it has been noted that, in some populations, severe disease is mostly observed in much younger individuals (

Uncovering dynamic information flow between stock market indices has been the topic of several studies which exploited the notion of transfer entropy or Granger causality, its linear version. The output of the transfer entropy approach is a directed weighted graph measuring the information about the future state of each target provided by the knowledge of the state of each driving stock market index. In order to go beyond the pairwise description of the information flow, thus looking at higher order informational circuits, here we apply the partial information decomposition to triplets consisting of a pair of driving markets (belonging to America or Europe) and a target market in Asia. Our analysis, on daily data recorded during the years 2000 to 2019, allows the identification of the synergistic information that a pair of drivers carry about the target. By studying the influence of the closing returns of drivers on the subsequent overnight changes of target indexes, we find that (i) Korea, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Singapore are, in order, the most influenced Asian markets; (ii) US indices SP500 and Russell are the strongest drivers with respect to the bivariate Granger causality; and (iii) concerning higher order effects, pairs of European and American stock market indices play a major role as the most synergetic three-variables circuits. Our results show that the Synergy, a proxy of higher order predictive information flow rooted in information theory, provides details that are complementary to those obtained from bivariate and global Granger causality, and can thus be used to get a better characterization of the global financial system.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac disorder that can cause severe complications. AF diagnosis is typically based on the electrocardiogram (ECG) evaluation in hospitals or in clinical facilities. The aim of the present work is to propose a new artificial neural network for reliable AF identification in ECGs acquired through portable devices. A supervised fully connected artificial neural network (RSL_ANN), receiving 19 ECG features (11 morphological, 4 on F waves and 4 on heart-rate variability (HRV)) in input and discriminating between AF and non-AF classes in output, was created using the repeated structuring and learning (RSL) procedure. RSL_ANN was created and tested on 8028 (training: 4493; validation: 1125; testing: 2410) annotated ECGs belonging to the “AF Classification from a Short Single Lead ECG Recording” database and acquired with the portable KARDIA device by AliveCor. RSL_ANN performance was evaluated in terms of area under the curve (AUC) and confidence intervals (CIs) of the received operating characteristic. RSL_ANN performance was very good and very similar in training, validation and testing datasets. AUC was 91.1% (CI: 89.1–93.0%), 90.2% (CI: 86.2–94.3%) and 90.8% (CI: 88.1–93.5%) for the training, validation and testing datasets, respectively. Thus, RSL_ANN is a promising tool for reliable identification of AF in ECGs acquired by portable devices.

In locally advanced (LA) breast cancer (BC), neoadjuvant treatments have led to major achievements, which hold particular relevance in HER2-positive and triple-negative BC. Conversely, their role in hormone receptor positive (HR+), hormone epidermal growth factor 2 negative (HER2-) BC is still under debate, mainly due to the generally low rates of pathological complete response (pCR) and lower accuracy of pCR as predictors of long-term outcomes in this patient subset. While administration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) in LA, HR+, HER2- BC patients is widely used in clinical practice, neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET) still retains an unfulfilled potential in the management of these subgroups, particularly in elderly and unfit patients. In addition, NET has gained a central role as a platform to test new drugs and predictive biomarkers in previously untreated patients. We herein present historical data regarding Tamoxifen and/or Aromatase Inhibitors and a debate on recent evidence regarding agents such as CDK4/6 and PI3K/mTOR inhibitors in the neoadjuvant setting. We also discuss key issues concerning the optimal treatment length, appropriate comparisons with NCT efficacy and use of NET in premenopausal patients.

The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of iridium(III) complexes having two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin or tetrahydrocurcumin as ancillary ligand have been investigated both in solution and as guest in a polymeric organic matrix. In solution, these complexes are characterized by a significant second-order NLO response, as determined by the Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) technique, like the related complex with acetylacetonate. Whereas the low second-harmonic generation response of a composite film of [Ir(2-phenylpyridine)2(acetylacetonate)] in polymethyl methacrylate was not stable and fell down to zero upon turning off the electric field. A good and stable response was obtained with a film based on the iridium(III) complex bearing two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin.

Whereas there is an increasing amount of reports on the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) and luminescence properties of tetradentate [N2O2] Schiff base–zinc complexes, the study of zinc complexes having two bidentate [NO] Schiff-base ligands is relatively unexplored from an NLO point of view. This work puts in evidence that the known chiral bis{2-[(R)-(+)-1-phenylethyliminomethyl]phenolato-N,O}zinc(II) complex is a fascinating multifunctional molecular inorganic–organic hybrid material characterized by interesting second-order NLO and luminescent properties in solution. The emissive properties of the organic 2-(R)-(+)-1-phenylethyliminomethyl]phenol proligand are greatly enhanced upon coordination to the inorganic Zn(II) center.

This study reports the epidemiological, pathological and mycological findings of cutaneous pythiosis in cattle in southern Brazil. 23 calves, that were kept next to a river with extensive marshy regions, presented ulcerated cutaneous lesions in thoracic and pelvic limbs, sometimes extending to the ventral thoracic region. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal pyogranulomas in the superficial and deep dermis. The Grocott-Methenamine silver, immunohistochemistry anti-Pythium insidiosum, ELISA serology and molecular characterization demonstrated the agent P. insidiosum in these cases.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between the health services offered by primary care teams and the detection of new tuberculosis cases in Brazil. METHODS This was an ecological study covering all Brazilian municipalities that registered at least one new tuberculosis case (diagnosed between 2012 to 2014 and notified in the Information System of Notifiable Diseases) and with at least one primary care team evaluated by the second cycle of the National Program for Improving Access and Quality of Primary Care (PMAQ-AB). The variables of the PMAQ-AB were classified as proximal or distal, according to their relation with the tuberculosis diagnosis. Then, they were tested hierarchically in multiple models (adjusted by States) using negative binomial regression. RESULTS An increase of 10% in the primary health care coverage was associated with a decrease of 2.24% in the tuberculosis detection rate (95%CI -3.35– -1.11). Regarding the proximal variables in relation to diagnosis, in the multiple model, the detection of tuberculosis was associated with the proportion of teams that conduct contact investigation (increase in Incidence Rate Ratio [IRR] = 2.97%, 95%CI 2.41–3.53), carry out tuberculosis active case finding (increase in IRR = 2.17%, 95%CI 1.48–2.87), and request culture for mycobacteria (increase in IRR = 1.87%, 95%CI 0.98–2.76). CONCLUSIONS The variables related to the search actions were positively associated with the detection of new tuberculosis cases, which suggests a significant contribution to the strengthening of the sensitivity of the surveillance system. On the other hand, primary care coverage was inversely associated with the tuberculosis detection rate, which could represent the overall effect of the primary care on transmission control, probably from the identification and early treatment of cases.

Intrinsic Connectivity Networks, patterns of correlated activity emerging from "resting-state" BOLD time series, are increasingly being associated with cognitive, clinical, and behavioral aspects, and compared with patterns of activity elicited by specific tasks. We study the reconfiguration of brain networks between task and resting-state conditions by a machine learning approach, to highlight the Intrinsic Connectivity Networks (ICNs) which are more affected by the change of network configurations in task vs. rest. To this end, we use a large cohort of publicly available data in both resting and task-based fMRI paradigms. By applying a battery of different supervised classifiers relying only on task-based measurements, we show that the highest accuracy to predict ICNs is reached with a simple neural network of one hidden layer. In addition, when testing the fitted model on resting state measurements, such architecture yields a performance close to 90% for areas connected to the task performed, which mainly involve the visual and sensorimotor cortex, whilst a relevant decrease of the performance is observed in the other ICNs. On one hand, our results confirm the correspondence of ICNs in both paradigms (task and resting) thus opening a window for future clinical applications to subjects whose participation in a required task cannot be guaranteed. On the other hand it is shown that brain areas not involved in the task display different connectivity patterns in the two paradigms.

The dynamics and behavior of ferromagnets have a great relevance even beyond the domain of statistical physics. In this work, we propose a Monte Carlo method, based on random graphs, for modeling their dilution. In particular, we focus on ferromagnets with dimension D≥4, which can be approximated by the Curie-Weiss model. Since the latter has as graphic counterpart, a complete graph, a dilution can be in this case viewed as a pruning process. Hence, in order to exploit this mapping, the proposed strategy uses a modified version of the Erdős-Renyi graph model. In doing so, we are able both to simulate a continuous dilution and to realize diluted ferromagnets in one step. The proposed strategy is studied by means of numerical simulations, aiming to analyze main properties and equilibria of the resulting diluted ferromagnets. To conclude, we also provide a brief description of further applications of our strategy in the field of complex networks.

A formação do glúten ocorre quando determinadas farinhas é misturada com água por processo de ação mecânica. Alimentos contendo glúten ao serem consumidos por indivíduos isentos da enzima Transglutaminase, causam várias reações adversas e esse transtorno é conhecido como doença celíaca. Dessa forma é interessante oferecer aos portadores dessa doença opções de alimentos nutritivos e saborosos. Objetivou-se neste trabalho desenvolver e avaliar as características físico-químicas e verificar a aceitação sensorial de um salgadinho de frango sem glúten (SFSG) indicado para pessoas celíacas. Trata-se de uma pesquisa experimental. Os SFSG foram submetidas às análises: umidade, lipídios, cinzas, proteínas, carboidratos e valor calórico total e microbiológicas: Coliformes a 45 °C, Staphylococcus aureus e Salmonella sp. As amostras foram submetidas ao teste de aceitação sensorial, seguindo o delineamento de blocos inteiramente casualizados, avaliando: aparência, textura, sabor e impressão global, utilizando escala hedônica de nove pontos. Os resultados da pesquisa demonstraram valores médios de 38,02%, 11,21%, 1,24%, 7,14%, 42,37% para umidade, lipídios, cinzas, proteínas e carboidratos respectivamente; obtendo assim o valor calórico médio de 299,01 Kcal. O SFSG apresentou-se dentro dos padrões microbiológicos preconizado pela legislação vigente, apresentando ausência de contaminação para Coliformes a 45 °C, S. aureus e Salmonella sp. O SFSG teve uma boa aceitação sensorial, obtendo médias de 7,41; 7,64; 7,64 e 7,56 para os atributos aparência, sabor, textura e aceitação global, respectivamente. Foi calculado o índice de aceitabilidade do produto obtendo-se o valor de 94,5%. A partir dos resultados, conclui-se que é possível produzir um SFSG com boa aceitação sensorial.

Introdução: Atualmente, é descrita elevada prevalência de hipovitaminose D no Lúpus Eritematoso Sistêmico (LES), a qual se associa a algumas manifestações clínicas e maior atividade inflamatória. Objetivo: Avaliar a associação entre insuficiência de vitamina D com LES e marcadores inflamatórios. Métodos: Estudo transversal, tendo sido avaliados 45 pacientes com LES e 24 controles sem a doença. Níveis de 25-hidroxivitamina D [25(OH)D] menores que 30 ng/mL foram considerados insuficientes. A atividade da doença foi avaliada pelo Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI). Foram avaliados, ainda, proteína C reativa ultrassensível (PCRus) e interleucina-6 (IL-6) para verificação do status inflamatório. Para avaliação do envolvimento renal, foram realizados análise de elementos anormais e sedimentoscopia urinárias (EAS), hematúria e piúria quantitativas, proteinúria e depuração de creatinina em urina de 24 horas e anti-DNA de dupla hélice sérico. Resultados: A prevalência de insuficiência de 25(OH)D foi de 55% nos pacientes lúpicos e 8% nos participantes controles (p = 0,001). A mediana da 25(OH)D foi menor nos pacientes do que no grupo controle. Os pacientes com insuficiência de 25(OH)D apresentaram níveis mais elevados de IL-6 e maior prevalência de hematúria ao EAS. Não houve correlação entre vitamina D, nefrite lúpica e SLEDAI. Conclusão: Em nosso estudo, a insuficiência de vitamina D foi mais prevalente em pacientes com LES e se associou com níveis mais elevados de IL-6 e presença de hematúria.

This Correspondence article is a comment which directly relates to the paper “A study of problems encountered in Granger causality analysis from a neuroscience perspective” (Stokes and Purdon, 2017). We agree that interpretation issues of Granger causality (GC) in neuroscience exist, partially due to the historically unfortunate use of the name “causality”, as described in previous literature. On the other hand, we think that Stokes and Purdon use a formulation of GC which is outdated (albeit still used) and do not fully account for the potential of the different frequency-domain versions of GC; in doing so, their paper dismisses GC measures based on a suboptimal use of them. Furthermore, since data from simulated systems are used, the pitfalls that are found with the used formulation are intended to be general, and not limited to neuroscience. It would be a pity if this paper, even if written in good faith, became a wildcard against all possible applications of GC, regardless of the large body of work recently published which aims to address faults in methodology and interpretation. In order to provide a balanced view, we replicate the simulations of Stokes and Purdon, using an updated GC implementation and exploiting the combination of spectral and causal information, showing that in this way the pitfalls are mitigated or directly solved.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo refletir sobre a utilização das novas tecnologias pedagógicas na sala de aula promovendo uma discussão sobre a real importância da aplicação da mesma para uma diversificação das atividades educativas, levando, por consequência a uma diversificação da ação pedagógica. Daí a necessidade da inovação na rotina escolar, pois os alunos desta última década são os chamados nativos digitais. Sendo importante também a reflexão dos professores para a elaboração de ''plano de mídias'', para a definição do plano de aula no uso das mídias digitais na instituição educacional. O professor que resolve modificar seus métodos de ensino, é uma pessoa que compreende o valor e a necessidade de constante inovação na escola. Pois cada vez mais dependemos das mídias digitais para nossas funções cotidianas, que já estão presentes em todas as áreas da nossa vida social. Claro que nem sempre as mesmas estão disponíveis à todos. Contudo o professor deve estimular os alunos a usarem canais diversos de informação e aprendizagem, além de escutá-lo, contribuindo assim para enriquecer seu próprio repertório de meios e melhor prepará-lo para aprender e aprender, formando e construindo assim, cidadãos questionadores, críticos e principalmente pensadores.

Although many studies have identified social conditions associated with tuberculosis, contextual and individual factors have rarely been analysed simultaneously. Consequently, we aimed to identify contextual and individual factors associated with tuberculosis incidence in general population in Brazil in 2010. We also assessed whether household crowding mediates the association between socioeconomic determinants and tuberculosis incidence. Individual data of tuberculosis cases were obtained from 5,565 municipalities in Brazil in 2010 (last year of national census), and merged with contextual variables. The associations were evaluated in a multilevel analysis using negative binomial regression. After adjusting for individual factors (age, sex and race) and geographic region, the following contextual factors were associated with tuberculosis incidence rate: AIDS incidence rate [incidence rate ratio (IRR), 1.21; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.18-1.24], unemployment rate (IRR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.13-1.19), Gini coefficient (IRR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.02-1.08), proportion of inmates (IRR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.09-1.14), mean per capita household income (IRR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.91-0.97) and primary care coverage (IRR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.92-0.96). Inclusion of household crowding in the multivariate model led to a loss of the associations of both Gini coefficient and mean per capita household income. In conclusion, our findings suggest that income inequality and poverty, as determinants of tuberculosis incidence, can be mediated by household crowding. Moreover, prison population can represent a potential social reservoir of tuberculosis in Brazil and should be addressed as a priority for disease control. Finally, the negative association between primary health coverage and tuberculosis incidence highlights the importance of this level of care as a strategy to control this disease.

Group formation is a quite ubiquitous phenomenon across different animal species, whose individuals cluster together forming communities of diverse size. Previous investigations suggest that, in general, this phenomenon might have similar underlying reasons across the interested species, despite genetic and behavioral differences. For instance improving the individual safety (e.g. from predators), and increasing the probability to get food resources. Remarkably, the group size might strongly vary from species to species, e.g. shoals of fishes and herds of lions, and sometimes even within the same species, e.g. tribes and families in human societies. Here we build on previous theories stating that the dynamics of group formation may have evolutionary roots, and we explore this fascinating hypothesis from a purely theoretical perspective, with a model using the framework of Evolutionary Game Theory. In our model we hypothesize that homogeneity constitutes a fundamental ingredient in these dynamics. Accordingly, we study a population that tries to form homogeneous groups, i.e. composed of similar agents. The formation of a group can be interpreted as a strategy. Notably, agents can form a group (receiving a 'group payoff'), or can act individually (receiving an 'individual payoff'). The phase diagram of the modeled population shows a sharp transition between the 'group phase' and the 'individual phase', characterized by a critical 'individual payoff'. Our results then support the hypothesis that the phenomenon of group formation has evolutionary roots.

Amorimia exotropica é um arbusto escandente que pertence à família Malpighiacea, cujo princípio tóxico é o monofluoracetato de sódio e possui ação cardiotóxica em bovinos. Ela é a única representante, na região Sul do país, do grupo de plantas que causam morte súbita associada ao exercício. Este trabalho identificou e mapeou as lesões cardíacas observadas em bovinos intoxicados naturalmente por A. exotropica. Selecionaram-se nove corações bovinos, provenientes de um surto de intoxicação natural pela planta em uma propriedade de gado de corte do Rio Grande do Sul e procedeu-se o mapeamento de oito regiões topográficas distintas (ápice, ventrículos direito e esquerdo, septo interventricular, músculos papilares direito e esquerdo e átrios direito e esquerdo). À avaliação macroscópica quatro bovinos apresentaram lesão focal e bem delimitada no músculo papilar esquerdo. Estas áreas na histologia correspondiam à necrose de coagulação em diferentes estágios de evolução, similares a infartos. Todos os bovinos apresentavam necrose de cardiomiócitos, caracterizadas por retração e hipereosinofilia citoplasmática e fragmentação celular em todas as áreas amostradas. A severidade da injúria celular foi avaliada pela imuno-histoquímica anti-troponina C, a qual demonstrou acentuada perda e/ou diminuição de marcação citoplasmática em células necróticas. O músculo papilar esquerdo foi a região mais acometida nos casos de intoxicação por Amorimia exotropica.

Detection and characterization of focal lesions in the cirrhotic liver may pose a diagnostic dilemma. Several benign and malignant lesions may be found in a cirrhotic liver along with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and may exhibit typical or atypical imaging features. In this pictorial essay, we illustrate computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of lesions such as simple bile duct cysts, hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia-like nodules, peribiliary cysts, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, lymphoma, and metastases, all of which occur in cirrhotic livers with varying prevalences. Pseudolesions, such as perfusion anomalies, focal confluent fibrosis, and segmental hyperplasia, will also be discussed. Imaging characterization of non-HCC lesions in cirrhosis is important in formulating an accurate diagnosis and triaging the patient towards the most appropriate management.

A flora arbórea brasileira é muito diversificada, mas as questões de identificação botânica, importância ecológica e biodiversidade ainda são pouco conhecidas. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar a flora de fragmento florestal localizado na região de Campos Gerais-MG. O fragmento florestal foi dividido em três áreas (A, B e C) e em cada área foram locadas 15 parcelas. Todas as espécies com diâmetro altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 10,0 cm foram avaliadas e identificadas. Os índices de Shannon (H’), Equabilidade de Pielou (J’) e de Similaridade de Sørensen foram calculados para as áreas em estudo. O levantamento florístico registrou 1013 indivíduos e 77 espécies arbóreo-arbustivas, distribuídas em 63 gêneros e 29 famílias botânicas. A vegetação apresenta uma composição florística mista, com espécies típicas de matas ciliares e de cerrado, com destaque para a família Fabaceae. O fragmento florestal apresentou baixo índice de similaridade Sorensen, em torno de 20%, quando comparado com outros estudos realizados no sul de Minas Gerais. O índice de biodiversidade e equabilidade revelaram diversidade florística para as áreas B (H’= 3,10 e J’=0,82) e C (H’= 3,45 e J’=0,85), e população de 150 e 100 plantas ha-1, respectivamente. A área A apresentou menor diversidade de espécies (H’= 2,48), menor densidade populacional (55 plantas ha-1), com maior número de indivíduos nas classes com menores DAP, encontrando-se em processo inicial de regeneração.

Organic room temperature persistent luminescence is a fascinating but still largely unexplored phenomenon. Cyclic-triimidazole and its halogenated (Br, I) derivatives have recently revealed as intriguing phosphors characterized by multifaceted emissive behavior including room temperature ultralong phosphorescence (RTUP) associated with the presence of H-aggregates in their crystal structure. Here, we move towards a multicomponent system by incorporating a fluoropyridinic fragment on the cyclic-triimidazole scaffold. Such chromophore enhances the molecular properties resulting in a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) in solution but preserves the solid-state RTUP. By means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, theoretical calculations, steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy on solutions, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) blends and crystals, the nature of the different radiative deactivation channels of the compound has been disclosed. In particular, the molecular fluorescence and phosphorescence, this latter observed in frozen solution and in PMMA blends, are associated to deactivation from S1 and T1 respectively, while the low energy RTUP, observed only for crystals, is interpreted as originated from H aggregates.

Heart rate variability (HRV; variability of the RR interval of the electrocardiogram) results from the activity of several coexisting control mechanisms, which involve the influence of respiration (RESP) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) oscillations operating across multiple temporal scales and changing in different physiological states. In this study, multiscale information decomposition is used to dissect the physiological mechanisms related to the genesis of HRV in 78 young volunteers monitored at rest and during postural and mental stress evoked by head-up tilt (HUT) and mental arithmetics (MA). After representing RR, RESP and SBP at different time scales through a recently proposed method based on multivariate state space models, the joint information transfer T RESP , SBP → RR is decomposed into unique, redundant and synergistic components, describing the strength of baroreflex modulation independent of respiration ( U SBP → RR ), nonbaroreflex ( U RESP → RR ) and baroreflex-mediated ( R RESP , SBP → RR ) respiratory influences, and simultaneous presence of baroreflex and nonbaroreflex respiratory influences ( S RESP , SBP → RR ), respectively. We find that fast (short time scale) HRV oscillations—respiratory sinus arrhythmia—originate from the coexistence of baroreflex and nonbaroreflex (central) mechanisms at rest, with a stronger baroreflex involvement during HUT. Focusing on slower HRV oscillations, the baroreflex origin is dominant and MA leads to its higher involvement. Respiration influences independent on baroreflex are present at long time scales, and are enhanced during HUT.

The linear and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of two pyrene-pyridine chromophores, namely, 4-(pyren-1-yl)pyridine (L1) and 4-(2-(pyren-1-yl)ethyl)pyridine (L2), were investigated and modulated by performing protonation/deprotonation cycles or by complexation to d10 metal centers such as Zn(II) and Cu(I) to form the monomeric [Zn(CH3CO2)2(L1)2] complex and the [CuI(L2)]n coordination polymer, respectively. The structures of L1, L2, [Zn(CH3CO2)2(L1)2] and [CuI(L2)]n were determined by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The NLO response, measured by the electric-field-induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) technique, was positive for both chromophores and showed an inversion of the sign after exposure to HCl vapors. This process was completely reversible and the original values were restored by simple exposure to NH3 vapors. Coordination of L1 to Zn(II) also resulted in a negative NLO response, although smaller in magnitude compared to the protonated form, due to the weak Lewis acidity of the “Zn(CH3CO2)2” fragment. The results were also interpreted on the basis of DFT/TDDFT calculations.

Chiral polyamidoamino acids were obtained by polyaddition of N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide with d-, d,l- and l-tryptophan (M-d-Trp, M-d,l-Trp and M-l-Trp). l-tryptophan/glycine copolymers, M-G-l-Trp5, M-G-l-Trp10, M-G-l-Trp20 and M-G-l-Trp40, were prepared from l-tryptophan/glycine mixtures. These polymers were amphoteric, with acid-base properties similar to those of the parent amino acids. The l-tryptophan/glycine copolymers with high glycine content were water soluble in the pH range 2-12. M-G-l-Trp40 showed a solubility gap centred at pH 4.5 and all tryptophan homopolymers were soluble only at pH > 7. Dynamic light scattering measurements performed in their solubility ranges, namely 2-11 M-G-l-Trp5, M-G-l-Trp10 and M-G-l-Trp20 and 7-11 for M-G-l-Trp40, M-d-Trp, M-l-Trp and M-d,l-Trp, showed that the size of all samples did not significantly vary with pH. Both M-l-Trp and M-G-l-Trp copolymers showed pH-dependent circular dichroism spectra in the wavelength interval 200–280 nm, revealing structuring. All samples were fluorescent. Their emission spectra were unstructured and, if normalized for their tryptophan content, almost superimposable at the same pH, providing evidence that only tryptophan governed the photoluminescence properties. Changing pH induced in all cases a slight shift of the emission wavelength maximum ascribed to the modification of the microenvironment surrounding the indole ring induced by different protonation degrees.

Trema micrantha é uma planta arbórea distribuída amplamente no Brasil. Descrevem-se nesse trabalho novos aspectos epidemiológicos e patológicos relacionados com a intoxicação por essa planta em equídeos. Dois equinos adultos da raça Crioula e dois asininos, de localidades distintas, foram intoxicados naturalmente por Trema micrantha, após consumirem grande quantidade da planta que ficou disponível a eles após uma poda. Além disso, um cavalo adulto, de outra propriedade, que estava passando por restrição alimentar, se intoxicou após consumir as partes baixas de um grande número de árvores jovens de T. micrantha. Clinicamente, em todos os equídeos a doença se caracterizou por alterações neurológicas, que apareceram três a quatro dias após o consumo da planta, com curso clínico de dois a quatro dias (abreviadas por eutanásia). Os principais achados de necropsia foram observados no fígado, que estavam levemente aumentados e com padrão lobular evidente e no sistema nervoso central (SNC), com múltiplas áreas amareladas, focos de malacia e hemorragia, principalmente, no tronco cerebral e cerebelo. Histologicamente, havia necrose hepática aguda, edema acentuado no SNC com degeneração fibrinoide da parede de vasos associada a hemorragia e trombose e, frequentemente, com infiltrado de neutrófilos. Outras alterações observadas nos encéfalos foram: grande quantidade de astrócitos de Alzheimer tipo II na substância cinzenta, acúmulos de células Gitter e degeneração Walleriana próxima a focos de lesões vasculares.

Descrevem-se casos de intoxicação aguda por cobre em ovinos da raça Santa Inês, numa propriedade rural, no Rio Grande do Sul. Três ovelhas recém-paridas, que consumiam ração formulada para bovinos, ingeriram, avidamente, sal mineral comercial para bovinos e apresentaram doença clínica e morte, uma semana após a introdução do sal. Os animais desenvolveram anorexia, permaneceram em decúbito lateral, o qual evoluiu para esternal e apresentaram fasciculação e rigidez muscular generalizada, antes de morrerem. À necropsia de um desses animais, as principais alterações foram hepatomegalia moderada e acentuação do padrão lobular hepático, além de erosões e ulcerações multifocais aleatórias na mucosa abomasal. Na avaliação histológica do fígado, havia necrose hepatocelular centrolobular acentuada e difusa, tumefação de hepatócitos, predominantemente, na região periportal, além de pequena quantidade de células de Kupffer com pigmento granular citoplasmático. O diagnóstico baseou-se na história clínica, nos achados de necropsia e histopatológicos e confirmou-se pelas altas concentrações de cobre detectadas no tecido hepático e nas amostras de ração e sal mineral.

The Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae) acarus is considered a major bee pest worldwide. The contamination risk of honey and wax, as well as the development of resistance by this pest, have led to the need of alternative ways for replacing conventional acaricides. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of different essential oils on the mortality of the Apis mellifera honey bee and its parasite, the Varroa destructor acarus. The methodology consisted in maintaining separately groups formed by honey bees and acarus, in cages with essential oils at the concentrations of 10 µL, 50 µL and 200 µL, being each concentration an essay. Treatments with water, anise, rosemary, cinnamon, eucalyptus, clove and mint were performed. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks, with six treatments and four replications. Bee and acarus specimens were observed for six hours, in order to quantify the mortality rate caused by treatments. The essential oils did not affect significantly the honey bees, however, the anise, cinnamon, eucalyptus and clove oils caused a significant mortality rate for the acarus. Concerning the 10 µL concentration, there was a mortality rate of 70% for anise and cinnamon, 77.5% for eucalyptus and 75% for clove. At the 50 µL concentration, a rate of 75% was observed for clove and cinnamon, 90% for anise and 92.5% for eucalyptus. For the 200 µL concentration, the mortality rates reached 92.5% for anise and eucalyptus, 52.5% for cinnamon and 87.5% for clove. Based on the mortality rates observed in the study, it is suggested that these substances can replace conventional acaricides.

O objetivo deste artigo é colaborar com o tema da aprendizagem organizacional, mais especificamente com a temática dos processos de aprendizagem existentes nas organizações e a mudança estratégica das mesmas. A pesquisa se propôs a entender qual a relação entre os processos de aprendizagem organizacional e a mudança estratégica, de acordo com os conceitos da teoria da aprendizagem situada e da teoria da aprendizagem pela experiência e reflexiva. A teoria da aprendizagem situada entende a aprendizagem como uma atividade situada em um dado contexto sociocultural. Os principais conceitos relacionados a essa teoria são o de participação periférica legítima e de comunidades de prática. A teoria da aprendizagem pela experiência é descrita como um processo contínuo de reorganização e reconstrução da experiência. Enquanto que a aprendizagem reflexiva envolve o acesso e o reacesso a suposições, e é tida como um processo ativo de reconhecimento e (re)interpretação de uma experiência, previamente apreendida, em um novo contexto. A maioria das definições de aprendizagem inclui conceitos de mudança e a relação com a aprendizagem existe porque a mudança estratégica é direcionada para criar um novo tipo de alinhamento entre as práticas básicas da empresa e as (novas) características do ambiente. Contudo, verificou-se que ainda há pouco consenso sobre a relação entre o tema da aprendizagem e o da mudança nas organizações. Viu-se que tanto a aprendizagem organizacional pode contribuir para mudanças estratégicas incrementais nas organizações, como também mudanças radicais podem levar a empresa a repensar suas práticas e, conseqüentemente, aprender com elas.

Lectins are proteins or glycoproteins able to bind, specifically and reversibly carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. Considering this ability, the utilization of Caesalpinia pulcherrima seeds polysaccharides as an affinity matrix was tested. The endospermic gum were solubilized in distinct concentrations of NaOH and treated with different amounts of epichlorohydrin (ECH) forming affinity gels with variable capacity for interaction with galactose- binding lectins. The gel with an ECH/gum ration of 6.0mmol/g was selected as the best affinity matrix. The matrix presented different efficiencies in terms of isolating galactose-binding lectins. C. pulcherrima endospermic galactomannans were purified by ethanol precipitation and the purified galactomannan was crosslinked with the best formulation of gel. The Artocarpus incisa, Ricinus communis and Abrus precatorius lectins showed interactions of 11.5, 17.7 and 47.2mg of retained protein in 1g of gel, respectively; the Artocarpus integrifolia lectin showed the highest affinities (79.7mg/g). The heamaglutination assays confirmed the activity and SDS-PAGE electrophoresis confirmed the isolation of the lectins in a single-step procedure.

FUNDAMENTO: As alterações de peso após o transplante cardíaco (TC) freqüentemente ocorrem e aumentam os riscos de doenças secundárias. OBJETIVO: Determinar o impacto da variabilidade do peso nos níveis séricos de glicose, triglicérides, colesterol total e frações dos pacientes transplantados cardíacos. MÉTODOS: Estudo retrospectivo documental realizado com 82 pacientes adultos submetidos a TC entre outubro de 1997 e dezembro de 2005 no Ceará, sendo 83% do sexo masculino e a idade média de 45,06±12,04 anos. As variáveis estudadas foram o perfil biopatológico, o peso e o índice de massa corporal (IMC) relacionadas às alterações bioquímico-metabólicas. Os dados foram descritos usando freqüências, medidas de tendência central, teste t de Student e coeficiente de correlação de Pearson. RESULTADOS: A média global do IMC aumentou de 23,77±3,68kg/m² antes do TC, para 25,48±3,92kg/m² no primeiro ano e para 28,38±4,97kg/m² no quinto. Os pacientes com sobrepeso/obesidade (IMC > 25 kg/m²) apresentaram valores médios de glicose, colesterol total, lipoproteína de baixa densidade (LDL) e triglicérides maiores que os pacientes com eutrofia/desnutrição (IMC < 25 kg/m²). CONCLUSÃO: Houve uma relação direta e significativa entre o estado nutricional e a variabilidade de peso no perfil metabólico de pacientes transplantados cardíacos.BACKGROUND: Weight alterations post cardiac transplant (CT) frequently occur and increase the risks of secondary diseases. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at determining the impact of weight variability on serum levels of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and its fractions of cardiac transplant patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective documental study held with 82 patients submitted to CT between October, 1997 and December, 2005 in Ceará, Brazil. 83% were male and the average age was 45.06±12.04 years. The studied variables were: biopathology profile, the weight and the body mass index (BMI) related to the biochemical-metabolic alterations and to the survival. Data were described using frequencies, measures of central tendency, t-Student test and Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The average global BMI increased from 23.77±3.68kg/m² before CT to 25.48±3.92kg/m² on the first year and to 28.38±4.97kg/m² on the fifth year. The patients with overweight/ obesity (IMC > 25 kg/m²) presented average glucose mean levels, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides higher than the patients with eutrophy/ malnutrition (IMC < 25 kg/m²). CONCLUSION: There was a significant direct relation between nutritional state and weight variability on the metabolic profile of cardiac transplant patients.

Este artigo analisa o processo de desenvolvimento econômico do setor agropecuário no Brasil no período de 1970 a 2000, destacando a sua desigualdade entre os estados da federação. Procura-se ressaltar a influência do estoque de capital físico (medido pela potência dos tratores c.v.) e do capital humano sobre o desenvolvimento agropecuário dos estados brasileiros. Com relação ao capital humano verifica-se que, de um modo geral, o nível de qualificação dos agricultores brasileiros é muito baixo, mesmo nos estados brasileiros mais desenvolvidos como São Paulo e Rio Grande do Sul, por exemplo. O menor nível de educação está nos estados nordestinos. Isso explica, em parte, o relativo atraso da agropecuária dessa região em relação à agropecuária dos demais estados. Constata-se, também, que a intensificação do uso de capital na agropecuária no Brasil vem crescendo em todos os estados a taxas superiores a 5% a.a. No entanto, pode-se verificar que foram justamente os estados nordestinos os que apresentaram, em termos relativos, as menores taxas de crescimento no uso de capital. Há, portanto, desequilíbrios regionais na agropecuária que não estão reduzindo por si próprios. No final, o artigo sugere medidas para diminuir as diferenças supracitadas.This paper analyzes Brazilian agricultural development from 1970 to 2000, highlighting how this process took place differently among Brazil’s states. Special attention is paid to the role of physical and human capital over Brazilian states’ agricultural development process. The main findings are: first, all Brazilian states show low levels of human capital at their agricultural sector; especially the Northeastern states what have the nationwide lowest level of formal education among their workers. The latter partially explains the nationwide lowest rank of Northeastern states’ agricultural sector. Second, capital use intensification has risen by 5% per year, in average. However, the Northeastern states show lower increase for this parameter. Regional differences into the agricultural sector are evident and they are not disappearing by themselves. At the end, the paper suggests some policies that can reduce these regional differences.
