High-resolution measurements have been made of elastic and inelastic scattering of /sup 58/Ni+ /sup 208/Pb at four bombarding energies from 10.3 to 17.4 MeV/nucleon. The considerable inelastic strength observed for excitation energies up to at least 7 MeV is dominated by Coulomb-driven quadrupole transitions. Analyses were done using both the distorted-wave Born approximation and coupled-channels models. At the highest bombarding energies the data can be described equally well by distorted-wave Born approximations and coupled channels analyses. We find that B(E2) = 0.062 e/sup 2/b/sup 2/ for the 1.454 MeV 2/sup +/ state in /sup 58/Ni and B(E2) = 0.34 e/sup 2/b/sup 2/ for the 4.09 MeV 2/sup +/ state in /sup 208/Pb.

I . INTRODUCTION The papers presented at th is workshop have demonstrated convincingly that molecular resonances are not isolated quirks of nature, but rather, phenomena that occur in a very wide var iety of nuclear reactions. Precisely because they are not quirks, and therefore not random, we can hope eventually to understand in detai l why and where they appear. We are not yet at th is stage. Yet, a very considerable body of data has accumulated, permitt ing us to begin to attempt to c lass i fy the resonances, to determine quant i ta t i ve ly how they relate to each other in a given system, and to study how the i r properties change from system to system. In the present paper, we discuss some physical impl icat ions of a recent ly proposed c lass i f i ca t ion scheme for the 12C + IZC Coulomb barr ier resonances for which the requis i te very large body of experimental data is already avai lable. We then present new data I suggesting that the back angle resonancel i ke structure previously observed in quasi-e last ic zSSi + IZC reactions 2 re f lec ts the existence of a f u l l y developed, rotat ing di-nuclear system that governs back-angle y ie lds in many addit ional ex i t channels. F ina l l y , we discuss b r ie f l y some very recent data for 6°Ni + 6°Ni scatter ing in a f i r s t look at a previously unstudied region of the periodic table.

We have begun a program to measure (d,p) reactions on neutron-rich nuclei, probing the single-particle states near the N = 50 and N = 82 closed shells. We have measured the neutron transfer on two N = 50 isotones, 82 Ge and 84 Se, at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. We have also performed a test measurement of transfer on 124 Sn to develop the techniques to study the 2 H( 130,132 Sn,p) 131,133 Sn reactions. Preliminary results for 85 Se are consistent with 5/2 + ground state and 1/2 + first excited state assignments, and the successful measurement of the 2 H( 124 Sn,p) 125 Sn reaction demonstrates the feasibility to measure the (d,p) reaction with neutron-rich 130,132 Sn beams.

Two observations of fine structure in proton emission are reported : 3‐μs 145Tm and 4‐ms 141Ho. These experiments were performed using the Recoil Mass Separator (RMS) at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge. The signals from the RMS detectors were digitally processed using Digital Gamma Finder modules. The fine structure branching ratios, 9.6±1.5% and 0.70±0.15%, and measured energies of the 2+ excited levels in daughter nuclei, 330 and 202 keV, respectively, helped us to determine the deformations and wave functions of proton‐emitting states.
