[EN] The inventory of the geological heritage, along with the quantification of its value, is an essential task for the implementation of geoconservation strategies. Despite the Brazilian’s rich geological heritage, only the state of São Paulo has concluded its systematic inventory. This paper presents the geological heritage inventory of Paraná State and a quantitative assessment of the scientific value of geosites and their vulnerability. The method applied for the geosites evaluation was adjusted after analyzing the most deemed protocols in international literature, taking into account the Brazilian socioeconomic and cultural conditions. The selection of geosites made by experts was based on the following criteria: representativeness, rarity, integrity, and degree of scientific knowledge. The inventory consists of 76 geosites, distributed in nine geological frameworks, which represent the geological evolution of Paraná. It is expected that this work may support future planning and management actions, which can safeguard the state’s geological heritage, with efficient strategies, especially for those places with high risk of degradation.

[BACKGROUND] Increasing evidence links genetic defects affecting actin-regulatory proteins to diseases with severe autoimmunity and autoinflammation, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Dedicator of cytokinesis 11 (DOCK11) activates the small Rho guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) cell division cycle 42 (CDC42), a central regulator of actin cytoskeleton dynamics. The role of DOCK11 in human immune-cell function and disease remains unknown., [METHODS] We conducted genetic, immunologic, and molecular assays in four patients from four unrelated families who presented with infections, early-onset severe immune dysregulation, normocytic anemia of variable severity associated with anisopoikilocytosis, and developmental delay. Functional assays were performed in patient-derived cells, as well as in mouse and zebrafish models., [RESULTS] We identified rare, X-linked germline mutations in DOCK11 in the patients, leading to a loss of protein expression in two patients and impaired CDC42 activation in all four patients. Patient-derived T cells did not form filopodia and showed abnormal migration. In addition, the patient-derived T cells, as well as the T cells from Dock11-knockout mice, showed overt activation and production of proinflammatory cytokines that were associated with an increased degree of nuclear translocation of nuclear factor of activated T cell 1 (NFATc1). Anemia and aberrant erythrocyte morphologic features were recapitulated in a newly generated dock11-knockout zebrafish model, and anemia was amenable to rescue on ectopic expression of constitutively active CDC42., [CONCLUSIONS] Germline hemizygous loss-of-function mutations affecting the actin regulator DOCK11 were shown to cause a previously unknown inborn error of hematopoiesis and immunity characterized by severe immune dysregulation and systemic inflammation, recurrent infections, and anemia. We investigate the ability of human ‘expert’ classifiers to identify strong gravitational lens candidates in Dark Energy Survey like imaging. We recruited a total of 55 people that completed more than 25 per cent of the project. During the classification task, we present to the participants 1489 images. The sample contains a variety of data including lens simulations, real lenses, non-lens examples, and unlabelled data. We find that experts are extremely good at finding bright, well-resolved Einstein rings, while arcs with g-band signal to noise less than ∼25 or Einstein radii less than ∼1.2 times the seeing are rarely recovered. Very few non-lenses are scored highly. There is substantial variation in the performance of individual classifiers, but they do not appear to depend on the classifier’s experience, confidence or academic position. These variations can be mitigated with a team of 6 or more independent classifiers. Our results give confidence that humans are a reliable pruning step for lens candidates, providing pure and quantifiably complete samples for follow-up studies.

[INTRODUCTION] Millions of people have received genome and exome sequencing to date, a collective effort that has illuminated for the first time the vast catalog of small genetic differences that distinguish us as individuals within our species. However, the effects of most of these genetic variants remain unknown, limiting their clinical utility and actionability. New approaches that can accurately discern disease-causing from benign mutations and interpret genetic variants on a genome-wide scale would constitute a meaningful initial step towards realizing the potential of personalized genomic medicine., [RATIONALE] As a result of the short evolutionary distance between humans and nonhuman primates, our proteins share near-perfect amino acid sequence identity. Hence, the effects of a protein-altering mutation found in one species are likely to be concordant in the other species. By systematically cataloging common variants of nonhuman primates, we aimed to annotate these variants as being unlikely to cause human disease as they are tolerated by natural selection in a closely related species. Once collected, the resulting resource may be applied to infer the effects of unobserved variants across the genome using machine learning., [RESULTS] Following the strategy outlined above we obtained whole-genome sequencing data for 809 individuals from 233 primate species and cataloged 4.3 million common missense variants. We confirmed that human missense variants seen in at least one nonhuman primate species were annotated as benign in the ClinVar clinical variant database in 99% of cases. By contrast, common variants from mammals and vertebrates outside the primate lineage were substantially less likely to be benign in the ClinVar database (71 to 87% benign), restricting this strategy to nonhuman primates. Overall, we reclassified more than 4 million human missense variants of previously unknown consequence as likely benign, resulting in a greater than 50-fold increase in the number of annotated missense variants compared to existing clinical databases. To infer the pathogenicity of the remaining missense variants in the human genome, we constructed PrimateAI-3D, a semisupervised 3D-convolutional neural network that operates on voxelized protein structures. We trained PrimateAI-3D to separate common primate variants from matched control variants in 3D space as a semisupervised learning task. We evaluated the trained PrimateAI-3D model alongside 15 other published machine learning methods on their ability to distinguish between benign and pathogenic variants in six different clinical benchmarks and demonstrated that PrimateAI-3D outperformed all other classifiers in each of the tasks., [CONCLUSION] Our study addresses one of the key challenges in the variant interpretation field, namely, the lack of sufficient labeled data to effectively train large machine learning models. By generating the most comprehensive primate sequencing dataset to date and pairing this resource with a deep learning architecture that leverages 3D protein structures, we were able to achieve meaningful improvements in variant effect prediction across multiple clinical benchmarks.

Single frequency users of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) should correct the ionospheric delay to obtain positioning solutions. A valuable source of ionospheric delay corrections is the global ionospheric models (GIMs) of Vertical Total Electron Content. The accuracy of GIMs is therefore important to improve the positioning accuracy. One of the main issues that affects the GIM performance, especially at low latitude regions, is the high sensitivity of the global positioning system (GPS) L2 frequency to ionospheric scintillation. As an attempt to overcome this issue, in this work, we study the capabilities of using only GPS L1 frequency to compute ionospheric corrections in form of regional ionospheric maps. The performance of the new ionospheric model is evaluated by means of single frequency precise point positioning, comparing the positioning results against the correction using dual-frequency GPS signals, as well as compared to the corrections provided by GIMs produced by the international GNSS service. As a result, the positioning performance using single frequency model presented similar accuracy to the dual frequency models and, at the same time, provided less observations affected by ionospheric scintillations. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using single frequency GNSS data to develop ionospheric models and to improve the positioning over low latitudes.

We identified a sample of 58 candidate stars with metallicity [Fe/H] ≲ −0.8 that likely belong to the old bulge spheroid stellar population, and analyse their Na and Al abundances from Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) spectra. In a previous work, we inspected APOGEE-Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundance Pipeline abundances of C, N, O, Mg, Al, Ca, Si, and Ce in this sample. Regarding Na lines, one of them appears very strong in about 20 per cent of the sample stars, but it is not confirmed by other Na lines, and can be explained by sky lines, which affect the reduced spectra of stars in a certain radial velocity range. The Na abundances for 15 more reliable cases were taken into account. Al lines in the H band instead appear to be very reliable. Na and Al exhibit a spread in abundances, whereas no spread in N abundances is found, and we found no correlation between them, indicating that these stars could not be identified as second-generation stars that originated in globular clusters. We carry out the study of the behaviour of Na and Al in our sample of bulge stars and literature data by comparing them with chemodynamical evolution model suitable for the Galactic bulge. The Na abundances show a large spread, and the chemodynamical models follow the main data, whereas for aluminum instead, the models reproduce very satisfactorily the nearly secondary-element behaviour of aluminum in the metallicity range below [Fe/H] ≲ −1.0. For the lower-metallicity end ([Fe/H < −2.5), hypernovae are assumed to be the main contributor to yields.

The rich diversity of morphology and behavior displayed across primate species provides an informative context in which to study the impact of genomic diversity on fundamental biological processes. Analysis of that diversity provides insight into long-standing questions in evolutionary and conservation biology and is urgent given severe threats these species are facing. Here, we present high-coverage whole-genome data from 233 primate species representing 86% of genera and all 16 families. This dataset was used, together with fossil calibration, to create a nuclear DNA phylogeny and to reassess evolutionary divergence times among primate clades. We found within-species genetic diversity across families and geographic regions to be associated with climate and sociality, but not with extinction risk. Furthermore, mutation rates differ across species, potentially influenced by effective population sizes. Lastly, we identified extensive recurrence of missense mutations previously thought to be human specific. This study will open a wide range of research avenues for future primate genomic research.

Large herbivores—such as the South American marsh deer—are one of the groups more threatened with extinction, with their disappearance having severe consequences for entire ecosystems. Methods to estimate abundance of large herbivores robustly and efficiently are fundamental to evaluate the status and monitor fluctuations of their populations in time, as well as identify key areas for conservation planning. Here, we (i) explore the use of spatiotemporally replicated drone-based counts analysed with N-mixture models to estimate the abundance of large herbivores; and (ii) investigate how the local abundance of marsh deer varies in the landscape, for the dry season in the Pantanal wetland (Brazil). We fitted marsh deer drone-based counts using binomial and multinomial N-mixture models (for single and double observer protocols respectively) and modelled local abundance in relation to vegetation greenness, distance to water bodies, and jaguar density. Marsh deer local abundance presented a strong relation with what is expected to be the high-quality areas for the species: high levels of vegetation greenness (that are expected to provide high-quality forage) and close to water bodies. We identified key areas for the population in the remaining humid environments and, in the drier region, close to artificial water bodies. Spatiotemporally replicated drone-based counts may serve as an accessible and cost-effective protocol to estimate abundance and monitor large herbivores while accounting for imperfect detection.

The search for plant-based superfoods has shown that many regional populations already have these foods in their diet, with significant potential for production and marketing. This critical review intends to show the history, diversity, characteristics, and uses, emphasizing their significance in traditional diets and potential in the food industry of Peruvian fava beans. As a valuable plant-based protein source, fava beans offer essential micronutrients and have diverse culinary applications. Innovative food industry applications include plant-based meat alternatives, fortified gluten-free products, and a natural color, protein, and fiber source in extruded foods. Key studies have highlighted the successful incorporation of fava beans into various food products, improving their nutritional properties, though some studies also point to limitations in their sensory acceptance. Further research is needed to understand the bioactive components, health effects, and techno-functional characteristics of beans. Challenges facing cultivating and consuming fava beans in Peru include adapting to climate change, enhancing productivity and quality, and promoting consumption and added value. Addressing these challenges involves developing climate-resilient varieties, optimizing agricultural practices, and providing access to resources and financing. In conclusion, this review highlights the promising prospects of Peruvian fava beans as a sustainable, nutritionally rich, and versatile ingredient in the food industry. By harnessing their potential and overcoming challenges, Peruvian fava beans can transition from an ancient crop to a modern superfood, inspiring a global shift towards sustainable and nutritionally balanced diets, aiding the fight against malnutrition, and enriching culinary traditions worldwide.

Theoretical and micromagnetic simulation studies of magnetic nanospheres with vortex configurations suggest that such nanostructured materials have technological advantages over conventional nanosystems for applications based on high-power-rate absorption and subsequent emission. However, full experimental evidence of magnetic vortex configurations in spheres of submicrometer size is still lacking. Here, we report the microwave irradiation fabrication of Fe3O4 nanospheres and establish their magnetic vortex configuration based on experimental results, theoretical analysis, and micromagnetic simulations. Detailed magnetic and electrical measurements, together with Mössbauer spectroscopy data, provide evidence of a loss of stoichiometry in vortex nanospheres owing to the presence of a surface oxide layer, defects, and a higher concentration of cation vacancies. The results indicate that the magnetic vortex spin configuration can be established in bulk spherical magnetite materials. This study provides crucial information that can aid the synthesis of magnetic nanospheres with magnetically tailored properties; consequently, they may be promising candidates for future technological applications based on three-dimensional magnetic vortex structures.

The development of green synthesized polymeric nanoparticles with anticancer studies has been an emerging field in academia and the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Vegetable oils are potential substitutes for petroleum derivatives, as they present a clean and environmentally friendly alternative and are available in abundance at relatively low prices. Biomass-derived chemicals can be converted into monomers with a unique structure, generating materials with new properties for the synthesis of sustainable monomers and polymers. The production of bio-based polymeric nanoparticles is a promising application of green chemistry for biomedical uses. There is an increasing demand for biocompatible and biodegradable materials for specific applications in the biomedical area, such as cancer therapy. This is encouraging scientists to work on research toward designing polymers with enhanced properties and clean processes, containing oncology active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The nanoencapsulation of these APIs in bio-based polymeric nanoparticles can control the release of the substances, increase bioavailability, reduce problems of volatility and degradation, reduce side effects, and increase treatment efficiency. This review discusses the use of green chemistry for bio-based nanoparticle production and its application in anticancer medicine. The use of castor oil for the production of renewable monomers and polymers is proposed as an ideal candidate for such applications, as well as more suitable methods for the production of bio-based nanoparticles and some oncology APIs available for anticancer application.

S-Nitrosoglutathione plays a central role in nitric oxide (NO) homeostasis, and S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) regulates the cellular levels of S-nitrosoglutathione across kingdoms. Here, we investigated the role of endogenous NO in shaping shoot architecture and controlling fruit set and growth in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). SlGSNOR silencing promoted shoot side branching and led to reduced fruit size, negatively impacting fruit yield. Greatly intensified in slgsnor knockout plants, these phenotypical changes were virtually unaffected by SlGSNOR overexpression. Silencing or knocking out of SlGSNOR intensified protein tyrosine nitration and S-nitrosation and led to aberrant auxin production and signaling in leaf primordia and fruit-setting ovaries, besides restricting the shoot basipetal polar auxin transport stream. SlGSNOR deficiency triggered extensive transcriptional reprogramming at early fruit development, reducing pericarp cell proliferation due to restrictions on auxin, gibberellin, and cytokinin production and signaling. Abnormal chloroplast development and carbon metabolism were also detected in early-developing NO-overaccumulating fruits, possibly limiting energy supply and building blocks for fruit growth. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms by which endogenous NO fine-tunes the delicate hormonal network controlling shoot architecture, fruit set, and post-anthesis fruit development, emphasizing the relevance of NO-auxin interaction for plant development and productivity.

In this work, laccases were immobilized onto positively charged supports such as Monoaminoethyl-N-aminoethyl (MANAE)-agarose and Diethylamino ethyl (DEAE)-agarose and onto negatively charged support (sulfopropyl agarose). However, the latter required prior enrichment of the protein surface with amino groups. The amination process was carefully controlled by varying concentrations of 1-ethyl-3-(dimethylamino-propyl) carbodiimide (EDAC), resulting in three types of aminated laccase: SA1 (3.364 mM of EDAC), SA2 (10.09 mM of EDAC), and SA3 (23.55 mM of EDAC). According to the CD spectra, the introduction of amino groups on the enzyme surface caused conformational changes that either positively (SA1) or negatively (SA2 and SA3) impacted the secondary structure, depending on the concentration of EDAC used. In addition, the concentration of EDAC during amination positively affected the immobilization yield on the sulfopropyl support. Amination also facilitated the production of biocatalysts with enhanced stability, with half-lives of 78 and 90 min for SA2 and SA3 preparations at 60 °C and pH 7.0. These findings imply that aminating laccase prior to immobilization is a valuable approach for broadening the versatility and usefulness of laccase-based systems. As a result, heterogeneous biocatalysts with improved properties have been prepared, expanding the range of potential applications.

Ecological interactions are one of the main forces that sustain Earth’s biodiversity. A major challenge for studies of ecology and evolution is to determine how these interactions affect the fitness of species when we expand from studying isolated, pairwise interactions to include networks of interacting species1,2,3,4. In networks, chains of effects caused by a range of species have an indirect effect on other species they do not interact with directly, potentially affecting the fitness outcomes of a variety of ecological interactions (such as mutualism)5,6,7. Here we apply analytical techniques and numerical simulations to 186 empirical mutualistic networks and show how both direct and indirect effects alter the fitness of species coevolving in these networks. Although the fitness of species usually increased with the number of mutualistic partners, most of the fitness variation across species was driven by indirect effects. We found that these indirect effects prevent coevolving species from adapting to their mutualistic partners and to other sources of selection pressure in the environment, thereby decreasing their fitness. Such decreases are distributed in a predictable way within networks: peripheral species receive more indirect effects and experience higher reductions in fitness than central species. This topological effect was also evident when we analysed an empirical study of an invasion of pollination networks by honeybees. As honeybees became integrated as a central species within networks, they increased the contribution of indirect effects on several other species, reducing their fitness. Our study shows how and why indirect effects can govern the adaptive landscape of species-rich mutualistic assemblages.

Copper is essential for homeostasis and regulation of body functions, but in excess, it is a cardiovascular risk factor since it increases oxidative stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of exposure to the recommended daily dose (13 µg/kg/day), upper tolerable dose (0.14 mg/kg/day) and twice the upper tolerable dose (0.28 mg/kg/day) via i.p. over 4 weeks on the vascular reactivity of aortic rings and the contraction of LV papillary muscles of male Wistar rats. It was also determined whether the antioxidant peptide from egg white hydrolysate (EWH) prevents these effects. Copper exposure at the doses evaluated did not change weight gain of male Wistar rats, the reactivity of the aortic rings or the cardiac mass. The dose of 0.13 µg/kg/day did not reduce the force of contraction, but it impaired the time derivatives of force. Doses of 0.14 and 0.28 mg/kg/day reduced the force of contraction, the inotropic response to calcium and isoproterenol, the postrest contraction and the peak and plateau of tetanized contractions. EWH treatment antagonized these effects. These results suggest that copper, even at the dose described as upper tolerable, can impair cardiac contraction without altering vascular reactivity. Antioxidative stress therapy with EWH reversed these harmful effects, suggesting a possible strategy for the amelioration of these effects.

The typical phenolic profile in grapes is characterized by its complexity both in terms of number of diverse chemical structures and their variation during ripening. Besides, the specific phenolic composition of grapes directly influences the presence of those components in the resulting wine. In this contribution, a new method based on the application of comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography coupled to a diode array detector and tandem mass spectrometry has been developed to obtain the typical phenolic profile of Malbec grapes cultivated in Brazil. Moreover, the method has been demonstrated to be useful to study how the phenolic composition in grapes evolved during a 10-week ripening period. Main detected compounds in grapes and in the wine derived from them were anthocyanins, although a good number of polymeric flavan-3-ols were also tentatively identified, among other compounds. Results show how the amount of anthocyanins present in grapes was increased during ripening up to 5–6 weeks and then decreased towards week 9. The two-dimensional approach applied was demonstrated to be useful for the characterization of the complex phenolic profile of these samples, involving more than 40 different structures and has the potential to be further applied to the study of this important fraction is different grapes and wines systematically.

A very simple and fast immobilization technique based on ion exchange was investigated to improve the thermal stability of acid phosphatase from wheat germ and potato. Immobilization was not efficient for the DEAE-sepharose, and MANAE-agarose supports. On the other hand, Toyopearl DEAE-650s proved to be a promising support, with immobilization yield above 95% and recovery of activity above 85% for both enzymes. A second step was introduced in the immobilization protocol to improve the thermal stability of these biocatalysts. For this, oxidation and reduction of glycosidic chains of acid phosphatase were carried out, allowing the formation of aldehyde groups and subsequent interaction with the amine groups to further stabilize the different forms (free and immobilized). Both biocatalysts showed residual activity after 1 hour of inactivation at the temperature of 60 °C, a fact not observed for the free enzyme. The wheat germ acid phosphatase derivative was the most stable, with residual activity of 66.7% for the only immobilized derivative and 76.2% for the oxidized/reduced derivative. Also, the derivatives prepared by ion exchange adsorption on Toyopearl (TOYO), followed by oxidation/reduction and intramolecular crosslinking, were approximately 15 and 41 times more stable than the free enzyme from wheat germ. © 2023, The Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Amaranth grains are a source of proteins such as albumins and globulins with well-balanced amino acids profile since they are rich in lysine and methionine, which are scarce in other cereals. Amaranth proteins also show a great bioavailability that contributes to their high quality and, consequently, become a potential substitute for animal-based foods. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the recent research on screening of amaranth proteins as well as their isolation, fractionation, amino acid composition and digestibility. In addition, we carried out an important overview of the nutritional benefits of amaranth proteins and its application as ingredients in food systems. The amaranth has an excellent balance of amino acids and bioactive peptides, with potential health benefits. The consumption of amaranth proteins can promote human health due to their potential to reduce the risk of suffering chronic diseases, while their bioactive peptides play a fundamental role as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive and antimicrobial activities. This review makes an important contribution and approaches the potentiality of using amaranth as a plant protein source, addresses its digestibility and the beneficial health effects brought mainly by the bioactive peptides present in grains

Lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL) has been immobilized on a methacrylate macroporous resin coated with octadecyl groups (Purolite Lifetech®® ECR8806F). This immobilization protocol gave a biocatalyst with significantly higher stability than that obtained using octyl agarose. To further improve the biocatalyst features, we tried to covalently immobilize the enzyme using this support. For this purpose, the support was activated with divinyl sulfone. The results showed that at least 1/3 of the immobilized enzyme molecules were not covalently immobilized. To solve the problem, we produced an aminated support and then activated it with divinyl sulfone. This permitted the full covalent immobilization of the previously immobilized TLL. The use of different blocking agents as the reaction endpoint (using ethylenediamine, Asp, Gly, and Cys) greatly altered the biocatalyst functional features (activity, specificity, or stability). For example, the blocking with ethylenediamine increased the ratio of the activity versus R- and S-methyl mandelate by a three-fold factor. The blocking with Cys produced the most stable biocatalyst, maintaining close to 90% of the activity under conditions where the just adsorbed enzyme maintained less than 55%. That way, this strategy to modify the support has permitted obtaining an enzyme interfacially activated versus the octadecyl layer and, later, covalently immobilized by reaction with the vinyl sulfone groups. © 2023 by the authors.

L-asparaginase has been shown to be effective in reducing acrylamide formation in food and in treating certain cancers, such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This study aimed to improve the application of L-asparaginase in these areas, through its immobilization in two distinct supports: epoxy-agarose and amino-epoxy-agarose. Different immobilization conditions were investigated, including immobilization pH and buffer concentration. The best activity results were obtained employing amino-epoxy-agarose, being the 0.1 M sodium carbonate buffer pH 10 the conditions that offered the highest immobilization yield (76%), immobilization efficiency (89.8%) and relative activity (68.2%). Immobilization of L-asparaginase in amino-epoxy-agarose improved its catalytic efficiency and stability, including at pH 4 and 60 °C. All immobilized biocatalysts preserved more than 70% of their activity after 7 cycles of reuse, and maintained about 82% of their activity after 60 days of storage at 4°C. These results show the efficacy of immobilized biocatalysts in the preservation of enzymatic activity and highlight their potential for biotechnological applications. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

A review of the literature covering research on the immobilization of lipases on hydrophobic supports was performed using systematic mapping (SM) concepts. This approach consists of a rigorous review of the methodology used to catalog evidence, to identify gaps at the frontier of knowledge, to identify unknown trends, and to list research groups. Our results show a wide variety of available lipases, including commercial, wild-type and recombinant strains. However, the most commonly used lipases are lipases from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL), Candida rugosa (CRL) or Rhizomucor miehei (RML) and lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB). A wide variety of supports with different degrees of hydrophobicity were identified and the supports activated with a layer of octyl or octadecyl groups were the most commonly used. The advantages of lipase immobilization on these supports are discussed. Among them, the immobilization, purification, stabilization and hyperactivation of lipases in a single step stand out. Moreover, problems related to lipase immobilization by interfacial activation are highlighted (mainly enzyme release). Strategies to overcome these problems include immobilization on heterofunctional supports or intermolecular crosslinking of enzymes immobilized by physical and/or chemical agents. The possibility of increasing the capacity of supports by lipase multilayer immobilization is also discussed. Finally, the structure, distribution of the network and the frequency of co-occurrence between lipases and supports are elucidated to determine the possible hotspots and hitherto unexplored advances in knowledge. © 2023 The Royal Society of Chemistry

In this work, a Co3O4 coating prepared by precipitation and vacuum filtration was applied to photoactivate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), for the degradation of imidacloprid (IMD) under continuous-flow conditions. The effects of PMS concentration, flow rate, and type of irradiation were evaluated. Under optimal conditions (0.2 gPMS L-1, 0.1 mL min-1, and simulated solar irradiation), 99% IMD photodegradation was achieved after 2 h of operation. The outstanding performance of the Co3O4/PMS/solar irradiation process was attributed to the synergistic activation of PMS by Co2+ and Co3+ species in the Co3O4 catalyst and the UV component of solar irradiation, in either the homogeneous phase or following the adsorption of PMS onto Co3O4. Quenching experiments revealed that sulfate and superoxide radicals, as well as singlet oxygen, were the main active species responsible for IMD oxidation. Measurements using HPLC-high resolution mass spectrometry enabled the identification of eight intermediate products, allowing the proposal of a degradation pathway. The combination of solar light, Co3O4, and PMS is a simple and low-cost approach with the potential to treat effluents containing harmful pollutants. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.

High-velocity stars in the Milky Way are related to extreme astrophysical phenomena. In this work, we characterize 28 stars with Galactocentric velocities higher than 400 km s observed in the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey Data Release 2 (J-PLUS DR2) survey. We combine J-PLUS photometry with astrometric data from the Gaia DR3 catalogue to analyse the kinematics, dynamics, and fundamental stellar parameters of these stars. Our results indicate that most of the 28 stars have typical behaviour and properties of halo stars, and some of them could be related to the disk population. Some of the halo stars may belong to known structures that originated from mergers of other systems with the Milky Way. © 2023 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Royal Astronomical Society

We report on elastic and electronically inelastic integral and differential cross sections as well as ionization and total cross sections for electron collisions with the pyrazine molecule. The Schwinger multichannel method is applied in calculations carried out according to the minimal orbital basis for single configuration interactions strategy from the 1-channel up to 139-channels close-coupling level of approximation. With these calculations we have obtained integral and differential cross sections as well as excitation functions for elastic electron scattering and, also, integral and differential cross sections for electronic excitation from the ground state to the 3B1u, 3B2u, 3B3u, 1B1u, 1B2u and 1B3u excited states of pyrazine by electron impact. By summing the total ionization cross section obtained by means of the binary-encounter-Bethe model to these elastic and electronically inelastic contributions, we provided an estimate for the total cross section describing the electron-pyrazine interaction process. The independent atom model with the screening-corrected additivity rule plus interference terms method was also used in the present study to determine elastic integral and differential as well as ionization and total cross sections for electron collisions from pyrazine. The present results were, whenever possible, critically compared to the experimental and theoretical data available in the literature. In general, the overall agreement between the present results and the experiment is quite encouraging.

Convergent evolution is defined as the independent evolution of similar phenotypes in different lineages. Its existence underscores the importance of external selection pressures in evolutionary history, revealing how functionally similar adaptations can evolve in response to persistent ecological challenges through a diversity of evolutionary routes. However, many examples of convergence, particularly among closely related species, involve parallel changes in the same genes or developmental pathways, raising the possibility that homology at deeper mechanistic levels is an important facilitator of phenotypic convergence. Using the genus Ranitomeya, a young, color-diverse radiation of Neotropical poison frogs, we set out to 1) provide a phylogenetic framework for this group, 2) leverage this framework to determine if color phenotypes are convergent, and 3) to characterize the underlying coloration mechanisms to test whether color convergence occurred through the same or different physical mechanisms. We generated a phylogeny for Ranitomeya using ultraconserved elements and investigated the physical mechanisms underlying bright coloration, focusing on skin pigments. Using phylogenetic comparative methods, we identified several instances of color convergence, involving several gains and losses of carotenoid and pterin pigments. We also found a compelling example of nonparallel convergence, where, in one lineage, red coloration evolved through the red pterin pigment drosopterin, and in another lineage through red ketocarotenoids. Additionally, in another lineage, “reddish” coloration evolved predominantly through structural color mechanisms. Our study demonstrates that, even within a radiation of closely related species, convergent evolution can occur through both parallel and nonparallel mechanisms, challenging the assumption that similar phenotypes among close relatives evolve through the same mechanisms.

O presente artigo busca investigar o modelo de economia circular, a fim de proteger o meio ambiente, já que o modelo de produção linear prejudica o ecossistema. Percebe-se que apesar dos avanços o modelo econômico, ainda há dificuldades técnicas. O objetivo é de investigar os avanços do modelo de economia circular. Demostra-se que o modelo é recente e inovador, mas que demanda atenção, para a implementar do novo modelo econômico. Neste trabalho, utiliza-se o método dedutivo, de natureza qualitativa e exploratória por meio por meio de análise bibliográfica e periódicos nacionais que tratam sobre a temática.

Este artigo procura analisar, com base na análise bibliográfica, apresentando-se através do método jurídico dogmático dedutivo, os direitos da personalidade de forma ampla, seu respaldo perante a Constituição da República Federativa do Brasil de 1988 e sua aplicabilidade perante o Código de Defesa do Consumidor, assim como na lei 13.709/18, tendendo resguardar os direitos intrínsecos ao ser humano perante as relações de consumo. Visa abordar também, o tratamento de dados pessoais e de dados pessoais sensíveis perante a legislação 13.709/18, no contexto protetivo legal.

This research aims to examine the impact of tax aggressiveness, earnings fluctuation and executive compensation on earnings management within companies listed on the Brazilian stock exchange. To this end, an analysis with panel data regression was conducted with a total of 702 observations using data from 117 companies. We found negative relation between earnings fluctuation and earnings management, indicating that companies with lower earnings fluctuation tend to have higher levels of earnings management, while to abnormal BTD and executive compensation was not found significative relation. These results are relevant because they present evidences that managers use discretionary accruals to meet personal goals, reducing and/or increasing results.

Este artigo objetiva refletir sobre a mobilidade humana global e o direito à saúde dos migrantes. Utiliza-se o método hipotético-dedutivo e análise bibliográfica, empregando-se a metateoria do Direito Fraterno, do jurista italiano Eligio Resta. Analisa-se a ideia de comunidade internacional incorporada pela perspectiva da fraternidade e o projeto político fundamentado pelo Direito Fraterno, através do qual há possibilidade de observação da sociedade e seus fenômenos em operacionalização. Por fim, verifica-se que Resta questiona a dimensão da cidadania e da soberania vinculada ao Estado-Nação, resgatando o reconhecimento da história civilizacional, construída em comunhão de pactos de hospitalidade entre conhecidos e desconhecidos.

This paper proposes efficient batch-based and online strategies for kernel regression over graphs (KRG). The proposed algorithms do not require the input signal to be a graph signal, whereas the target signal is defined over the graph. We first use random Fourier features (RFF) to tackle the complexity issues associated with kernel methods employed in the conventional KRG. For batch-based approaches, we also propose an implementation that reduces complexity by avoiding the inversion of large matrices. Then, we derive two distinct online strategies using RFF, namely, the mini-batch gradient KRG (MGKRG) and the recursive least squares KRG (RLSKRG). The stochastic gradient KRG (SGKRG) is introduced as a particular case of the MGKRG. The MGKRG and the SGKRG are low-complexity algorithms that employ stochastic gradient approximations in the regression-parameter update. The RLSKRG is a recursive implementation of the RFF-based batch KRG. A detailed stability analysis is provided for the proposed online algorithms, including convergence conditions in both mean and mean-squared senses. A discussion on complexity is also provided. Numerical simulations include a synthesized-data experiment and real-data experiments on temperature prediction, brain activity estimation, and image reconstruction. Results show that the RFF-based batch implementation offers competitive performance with a reduced computational burden when compared to the conventional KRG. The MGKRG offers a convenient trade-off between performance and complexity by varying the number of mini-batch samples. The RLSKRG has a faster convergence than the MGKRG and matches the performance of the batch implementation.

O presente trabalho, que utiliza-se da metodologia de pesquisa bibliográfica e jurisprudencial, tem por escopo verificar a possibilidade de renúncia ao direito de concorrência sucessória pelo cônjuge sobrevivente, através de convenção antenupcial, no Direito brasileiro. Para tanto, faz-se um estudo comparativo entre a lei portuguesa, que permite a renúncia, e a lei brasileira que a proíbe expressamente. Ao final, constata-se que, no Brasil, a reforma legislativa para alterar a regra que trata sobre a proibição dos pactos sucessórios renunciativos em convenções antenupciais é necessária para fins de conformar o princípio da autonomia privada com o princípio da solidariedade familiar.

Esta pesquisa localiza-se entre os direitos constitucional e penal. O objetivo é refletir sobre perspectivas teóricas das correntes neoconstitucionalista e garantista para responder ao problema: quais as aproximações e incongruências entre essas teorias? O método de abordagem é o dedutivo, conjugado ao estudo descritivo e comparativo dos conceitos através de análise bibliográfica. Resultou-se que, apesar das aproximações, o garantismo discorda de preceitos neoconstitucionalistas, e pontos fortes deste são interpretados como meios de enfraquecimento da normatividade constitucional no garantismo. Concluiu-se que o garantismo pode ser considerado uma crítica ao neoconstitucionalismo, quando se opõe aos seus procedimentos e propõe um constitucionalismo garantista.

Theoretical works addressing electronic nano-devices operating in an aqueous environment often neglect solvent effects. In order to assess the role played by the polarization effects on the electronic transport properties of solvated graphene, for example in possible bio-sensing applications, we have used here a combination of polarizable force-field molecular dynamics, hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach, density functional theory, and non-equilibrium Green's function method. We considered different solvation conditions, the presence of defects in graphene, as well as various choices for the partitions between the quantum and classical regions in QM/MM, in which we explicitly account for polarization effects. Our results show that the polarization effects on graphene lead to changes in the structure of interfacial water molecules which are more pronounced in the vicinity of defects. The presence of water leads to increased scattering due to the long-range charge interactions with graphene. At the same time, changes in the conductance due to polarization or salt concentration are found to be small, paving the way for robust electronic nano-devices operating in aqueous environments.

The level of habitat availability influences genetic divergence among populations and the genetic diversity within populations. In the marine environment, near-shore species are among the most sensitive to habitat changes. Knowledge of how historical environmental change affected habitat availability and genetic variation can be applied to the development of proactive management strategies of exploited species. Here, we modeled the contemporary and historical distribution of Lutjanus jocu in Brazil. We describe patterns of genomic diversity to better understand how climatic cycles might correlate with the species demographic history and current genetic structure. We show that during the Last Glacial Maximum, there were ecological barriers that are absent today, possibly dividing the range of the species into three geographically separated areas of suitable habitat. Consistent with a historical reduction in habitat area, our analysis of demographic changes shows that L. jocu experienced a severe bottleneck followed by a population size expansion. We also found an absence of genetic structure and similar levels of genetic diversity throughout the sampled range of the species. Collectively, our results suggest that habitat availability changes have not obviously influenced contemporary levels of genetic divergence between populations. However, our demographic analyses suggest that the high sensitivity of this species to environmental change should be taken into consideration for management strategies. Furthermore, the general low levels of genetic structure and inference of high gene flow suggest that L. jocu likely constitutes a single stock in Brazilian waters and, therefore, requires coordinated legislation and management across its distribution.

As modern society progresses, advancements in digital and personalized healthcare have evolved from the more analogues ways to an inherent need for point-of-care devices. Besides, the evolution of miniaturized electronics or silicon-based technology, microfluidics has also been instrumental to the development these flexible and wearable devices and has amassed intense interest over the last few decades. In this chapter, the use of microfluidics for sample collection (sampling) in wearables is discussed, with a brief description of the approaches for microfluidic device fabrication, as well as the various types of sample matrices (bodily fluids) that can be collected. Then signal-amplification strategies for wearables are presented, focusing on the unique characteristics and integration of novel nanomaterials.

In this paper, genipin, an important natural crosslinker and anti-neurodegenerative compound, was extracted from unripe Genipa americana L., combining high-intensity ultrasound (HIUS) and natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs). The extraction process conditions were evaluated step-by-step to reach the best genipin recovery. The obtained ready-to-use genipin-NADES extract was examined regarding its crosslinking properties and anti-neurodegenerative capacity. For the condictions tested, the highest genipin recovery was obtained using 40 % water and 60 % betaine:lactic acid NADES in molar ratio 1:3 (n/n) as the solvent, a solvent:feed ratio of 19 (w/w), and HIUS acoustic power of 14 ± 1 W. The HIUS-assisted extraction using NADES as solvent showed to be a promising and efficient green extraction technique to obtain genipin. The ready-to-use genipin-NADES extract presented crosslinking capacity and anticholinergic activity. These results indicate that genipin-NADES extract can be directly applied in hydrogels for drug delivery, films, tissue engineering, and others. Moreover, it can be used in food, supplements, and medicine to enhance their neuroprotective effect.

The fruits from the Arecaceae family, although being rich in bioactive compounds with potential benefits to health, have been underexplored. Studies on their composition, bioactive compounds, and effects of their consumption on health are also scarce. This review presents the composition of macro- and micronutrients, and bioactive compounds of fruits of the Arecaceae family such as bacaba, patawa, juçara, açaí, buriti, buritirana, and butiá. The potential use and reported effects of its consumption on health are also presented. The knowledge of these underutilized fruits is important to encourage production, commercialization, processing, and consumption. It can also stimulate their full use and improve the economy and social condition of the population where these fruits are found. Furthermore, it may help in future research on the composition, health effects, and new product development. Arecaceae fruits presented in this review are currently used as raw materials for producing beverages, candies, jams, popsicles, ice creams, energy drinks, and edible oils. The reported studies show that they are rich in phenolic compounds, carotenoids, anthocyanins, tocopherols, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids. Moreover, the consumption of these compounds has been associated with anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, antiobesity, and cardioprotective effects. These fruits have potential to be used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Despite their potential, some of them, such as buritirana and butiá, have been little explored and limited research has been conducted on their composition, biological effects, and applications. Therefore, more detailed investigations on the composition and mechanism of action based on in vitro and/or in vivo studies are needed for fruits from the Arecaceae family.

Aluminum (Al) is a non-essential metal omnipresent in human life and is considered an environmental toxicant. Al increases reactive oxygen production and triggers immune responses, contributing to chronic systemic inflammation development. Here, we have tested whether an egg white hydrolysate (EWH) with potential bioactive properties can protect against changes in reproductive function in rats exposed to long-term Al dietary levels at high and low doses. Male Wistar rats received orally: low aluminum level group—AlCl3 at 8.3 mg/kg b.w. for 60 days with or without EWH (1 g/kg/day); high aluminum level group—AlCl3 at 100 mg/kg b.w. for 42 days with or without EWH (1 g/kg/day). The co-administration of EWH prevented the increased Al deposition surrounding the germinative cells, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the reproductive organs. Furthermore, the daily supplementation with EWH maintained sperm production and sperm quality similar to those found in control animals, even after Al exposure at a high dietary contamination level. Altogether, our results suggest that EWH could be used as a protective agent against impairment in the reproductive system produced after long-term exposure to Al at low or high human dietary levels.

For the last two decades, measurable residual disease (MRD) has become one of the most powerful independent prognostic factors in B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL). However, the effect of therapy on the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment and its potential relationship with the MRD status and disease free survival (DFS) still remain to be investigated. Here we analyzed the distribution of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and endothelial cells (EC) in the BM of treated BCP-ALL patients, and its relationship with the BM MRD status and patient outcome. For this purpose, the BM MRD status and EC/MSC regeneration profile were analyzed by multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC) in 16 control BM (10 children; 6 adults) and 1204 BM samples from 347 children and 100 adult BCP-ALL patients studied at diagnosis (129 children; 100 adults) and follow-up (824 childhood samples; 151 adult samples). Patients were grouped into a discovery cohort (116 pediatric BCP-ALL patients; 338 samples) and two validation cohorts (74 pediatric BCP-ALL, 211 samples; and 74 adult BCP-ALL patients; 134 samples). Stromal cells (i.e., EC and MSC) were detected at relatively low frequencies in all control BM (16/16; 100%) and in most BCP-ALL follow-up samples (874/975; 90%), while they were undetected in BCP-ALL BM at diagnosis. In control BM samples, the overall percentage of EC plus MSC was higher in children than adults (p = 0.011), but with a similar EC/MSC ratio in both groups. According to the MRD status similar frequencies of both types of BM stromal cells were detected in BCP-ALL BM studied at different time points during the follow-up. Univariate analysis (including all relevant prognostic factors together with the percentage of stromal cells) performed in the discovery cohort was used to select covariates for a multivariate Cox regression model for predicting patient DFS. This study evaluated green coffee seed residue (GCSR) as an alternative substrate for producing distilled beverages. Two proportions of GCSR, 10% and 20% (w/v), were fermented and distilled in a copper alembic still. The spirits were characterized by GC-FID, HS-SPME GC–MS, and sensory analysis by trained panelists. Most of the 62 identified volatile compounds were affected by the GCSR concentration. Total terpenes, higher alcohols, and acetals showed the highest concentrations in the 10% GCSR spirit. Esters, acetates, and aldehydes were most abundant in the 20% GCSR. In the sensory analysis, the 10% GCSR spirit was characterized by floral, dairy, and almond aromas, while the 20% GCSR spirit was embodied coffee, vegetable, hazelnut, cooked cabbage, and nut descriptors. The results demonstrate the potential of GCSR as a substrate for producing coffee spirits with chemical and sensory qualities, with the 10% GCSR being the better option for fermentation.

Shape estimates that quantifying the halo anisotropic mass distribution are valuable parameters that provide information on their assembly process and evolution. Measurements of the mean shape estimates for a sample of cluster-sized haloes can be used to test halo formation scenarios, as well as improving the modelling of potential biases in constraining cosmological parameters using these systems. In this work, we test the recovery of halo cluster shapes and masses applying weak-lensing stacking techniques. To this end, we use lensing shear and a new dark-matter halo catalogue, derived from the light-cone output of the cosmological simulation MICE-GC. We perform this study by combining the lensing signals obtained for several samples of haloes, selected according to their mass and redshift, taking into account the main directions of the dark-matter distributions. In the analysis, we test the impact of several potential introduced systematics, such as the adopted modelling, the contribution of the neighbouring mass distribution, miscentring, and misalignment effects. Our results show that when some considerations regarding the halo relaxation state are taken into account, the lensing semi-axial ratio estimates are in agreement within a 5 per cent with the mean shapes of the projected dark-matter particle distribution of the stacked haloes. The presented methodology provides a useful tool to derive reliable shapes of galaxy clusters and to contrast them with those expected from numerical simulations. Furthermore, our proposed modelling, that takes into account the contribution of neighbouring haloes, allows to constraint the elongation of the surrounding mass distribution.

In the first billion years after its formation, the Galaxy underwent several mergers with dwarf satellites of various masses. The debris of Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), the galaxy responsible for the last significant merger of the Milky Way, dominates the inner halo and has been suggested to be the progenitor of both the Hercules-Aquila Cloud (HAC) and Virgo Overdensity (VOD). We combine SEGUE, APOGEE, Gaia, and StarHorse distances to characterize the chemodynamical properties and verify the link between HAC, VOD, and GSE. We find that the orbital eccentricity distributions of the stellar overdensities and GSE are comparable. We also find that they have similar, strongly peaked, metallicity distribution functions, reinforcing the hypothesis of common origin. Furthermore, we show that HAC and VOD are indistinguishable from the prototypical GSE population within all chemical-abundance spaces analyzed. All these evidences combined provide a clear demonstration that the GSE merger is the main progenitor of the stellar populations found within these halo overdensities.

We present an updated sample of blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars selected from the photometric and spectroscopic data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey and its associated project Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). With these data, we selected candidates for A-type stars in the color–color space and then a mixture modeling technique was implemented in order to distinguish between BHB and main-sequence/blue-straggler stars based on their surface gravity values ($\mathrm{log}\,g$) estimated by the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline. Our robust approach allows us to attribute individual probabilities of each star truly being in the BHB stage. Hence, our method is advantageous in comparison to previous SEGUE BHB selections that adopted simple log g cuts. We also revisit the color–magnitude relation for these stars and propose two calibrations, based on updated distances for Galactic globular clusters, to estimate absolute magnitudes with (g − r)0 and (u − r)0 colors.

Plankton imaging systems supported by automated classification and analysis have improved ecologists' ability to observe aquatic ecosystems. Today, we are on the cusp of reliably tracking plankton populations with a suite of lab-based and in situ tools, collecting imaging data at unprecedentedly fine spatial and temporal scales. But these data have potential well beyond examining the abundances of different taxa; the individual images themselves contain a wealth of information on functional traits. Here, we outline traits that could be measured from image data, suggest machine learning and computer vision approaches to extract functional trait information from the images, and discuss promising avenues for novel studies. The approaches we discuss are data agnostic and are broadly applicable to imagery of other aquatic or terrestrial organisms.

We set out to document the diversity and distribution of bryophytes in Admiralty Bay and thereby enable the identification of patterns in local diversity and their possible drivers. Combining data extracted from different sources and recent collections, we documented the presence of 63 species. Similarity analyses of moss species diversity in relation to underlying geology and ornithogenic influence identified an identical cophenetic correlation coefficient of 0.744 for both factors. The Sørensen index was < 0.6, indicating that the groups share < 60% of the species recorded. The data showed that the selected filters (ornithogenic soils, non-ornithogenic soils and different geological extracts) did not underlie consistent species groupings, and we conclude that other environmental and topographical factors are likely to be responsible for shaping the moss community structure in Admiralty Bay. To enable effective management of Antarctic Specially Managed Area (ASMA) No. 1 and Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) No. 128, robust assessments of the local ecosystem and biodiversity are necessary to assist in the decision-making processes mandated under the Antarctic Treaty System, one of whose founding principles is the preservation of the Antarctic ecosystem.

We present two recent parametrizations of the equation of state (FSU2R and FSU2H models) that reproduce the properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei, fulfill constraints on high-density matter stemming from heavy-ion collisions, produce 2M⊙ neutron stars, and generate neutron star radii below 13 km. Making use of these equations of state, cooling simulations for isolated neutron stars are performed. We find that two of the models studied, FSU2R (with nucleons) and, in particular, FSU2H (with nucleons and hyperons), show very good agreement with cooling observations, even without including nucleon pairing. This indicates that cooling observations are compatible with an equation of state that produces a soft nuclear symmetry energy and, thus, generates small neutron star radii. Nevertheless, both schemes produce cold isolated neutron stars with masses above 1.8M⊙.

This paper discusses the combined effects of optical excitation power, interface roughness, lattice temperature, and applied magnetic fields on the spin coherence of excitonic states in GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells. For low optical powers, at lattice temperatures between 4 and 50 K, the scattering with acoustic phonons and short-range interactions appear as the main decoherence mechanisms. Statistical fluctuations of the band gap, however, become also relevant in this regime and we were able to deconvolute them from the decoherence contributions. The circularly polarized magneto-photoluminescence unveils a nonmonotonic tuning of the coherence for one of the spin components at low magnetic fields. This effect has been ascribed to the competition between short-range interactions and spin-flip scattering, modulated by the momentum relaxation time.

Weak antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction in the ferromagnetic (FM) partially ordered La2CoMnO6 (LCMO) was detected by Raman spectroscopy by monitoring spin-phonon coupling. Because of the sensibility to probe short-range disorder and lattice modifications, the Raman spectroscopy showed to be an useful tool to indicate less remarkable magnetic transitions in LCMO compound. Apart from the expected spin-phonon coupling due to the long-range FM superexchange (Tc ∼230 K), phonons parameters pointed out an additional spin-phonon coupling related to the short-range AFM interaction at Tc ∼135 K, which was not detected from the magnetic bulk response. These results reinforce the Raman spectroscopy as a powerful technique to detect antisite disorder into A2B′B’’O6 magnetic double perovskites, whose magnetic properties are driven by superexchange interactions.
